It's odd that someone should be writing a review about a closed restaurant. Except that this review is not about a mere closed restaurant. It's about a closed INSTITUTION in downtown Hialeah. Elba and and her husband (either Chang or Ming) started their restaurant decades ago on a street full of adobe, old-West type building in a part of Hialeah which was razed about 30 years ago. From there, they tried different venues and names (Kong Ming,for one) until they landed on Palm Avenue, and remained there until rather recently. Everything there was outstandingly delicious. There menu was a bit limited, for example, no orange anything. However, you could get the most delicious dumplings this side of the airport. Pepper steak you said? Crispy green and red peppers, onions sliced just right, and the best cut of meat you have ever had for a single digit figure. Fried won tons and a cold Singtao beer would bring tears to any hearty-eating foodie. They had a minuta sandwich which sent La Minutera back to school. If it were any more fresh you would be swimming after it! This is, or was, Palm avenue, so you were not expecting a fancy or trendy atmosphere. Alas, Zanja is a thing of the past, but my mouth watering memories of their delicious fare will live on.
