Went here on a Friday Night around 8:50ish. Just barely made it in before the cover started. Its a big space, vertically speaking. Walls have James Bond posters, there is a big bar that only serves Beer and Cider. There are also tables to sit at. At the back is a red phone booth, and above that is a stuffed gator that is stuffed just like the one that was/is in Ballyhoo grills dining area. I dont drink beer, so my man got me a cider. It was good, I didnt pay for it so I cant tell you the price. There was a band playing, and for a really long time they tuned their instruments, im talking a really long time. There were so many mic checks I thought it was a song. One of the singers is a friend of my boyfriends and according to him she is amazing, I couldnt tell because the acoustics in that place are horrific. Its not a place for any band to go and do their thing, unless they want to sound like they are at the bottom of the ocean, or in the grand canyon surrounded by howler monkeys. I dont think we will go back again, unless its with a large group where we are just outvoted or just going along for the evening. I had fun, because we can have fun wherever we go, but I didnt find this place to be return worthy for the both of us alone. By the end of the night the place was just packed and there is no where for anyone to sit. Oh about the sitting? the benches for the tables were so hard my tushi was hating me.

I stopped by this place last Saturday to watch the NBA All Star's game with my boyfriend. This is a very spacious bar with plenty of bar stools, tables, and floorspace. They have a lot of different beers on tap so you're likely to find a beer that suits your taste. The only downside to my visit is that when it got pretty busy, the bartenders seemed to gravitate to only one side of the bar, which made it pretty hard to order more drinks or close the tab. (Come to think of it, they spent most of their night on one side of the bar since they only have once cash register.) We met the co-owner of the bar and he seemed like a very friendly guy. He told us all his plans for the place, and overall Downtown's been needing a place like this :) This place is still a work-in-progress, and for now I'm giving it four stars (which is still pretty good). Can't wait until they get some Belgium beers in!

1. Good beer selection. 2. Good drink selection. The use of space was very nice. I haven't been to every bar downtown but this could have the largest floor plan. High ceilings and the use of wood in the design was well done. I heard roomers of a door charge sometimes and if that's true DON'T pay it. A door charge would be ridiculous to go in and have drinks here. Otherwise I will stop in again when I'm in town.

Its not my kind of bar, but seems like a fun place for the young-uns. We really only came to try the beer. They had five available so we tried a sampler. The stout and double amber were very good. The habenero beer really surpised me. I wouldnt order it normally, but it is worth trying. The strawberry ale reminded me of a farmhouse sour ale and I was not a fan of the hef. Its also a great place to people watch. I read on here of people complaining of the beer prices. Keep in mind they are not selling budlight, so the prices are actually fair for microbrews.

Alcohol, Beer, Music and Games... This is my type of place. I don't like how crowded it gets later in the night so we usually go early and have a few drinks and play some games. The bartenders are nice, their beer selection is awesome and they allow you to bring your own outside food in. The customers are also really nice and friendly. We typically end up playing games with total strangers and a few times had a neighbor offers some of their food.

Really fun beer place in Downtown Gainesville. It looks like a big warehouse with tall ceilings. Has cool gray walls. Foosball right in front. Has a stage with usually good live entertainment in the back. When we say we are going downtown, Tall Paul's is usually what everyone first thinks of.

I've been here several times over the last year. A friendly, open, well lit pub. Plenty of room for big crowds. The staff and regulars seem welcoming unlike bars where you get the "what's he doing here" look. The bar is in a reclaimed building that looks about 100 years old. It has the old wooden rafters and roof decking exposed giving a charming look and an open(not at all stuffy) feeling. Over all it's well put together and a 10 out of 5 for cleanliness as far as college town bars go. Tall Paul himself really brews beer there, I've met him. Which leads me to the most important part, The Brews! They brew around 8 different beers in house, you can see the actual casks behind the bar were they do the brewing. I've only been a few times, and even though I LOOOVVVE beer, I'm not a heavy drinker so I've only had a few of them. Every beer I've had there has been delicious. They even let you sample before you make you're choice. In conclusion, if I lived in Gainesville I would go there all the time.

The bands ALWAYS consistently blow but this is still my favorite bar downtown. The staff is great, they have games, and big open windows facing towards the street. Pretty great beer selection and plenty of open space. Decent mix of people and I'm not always the oldest person there, so that makes me feel a little better. The lights are pretty bright, but I guess that's a good thing-no regrets the next day?

If you're into anything Boston in Florida, this is your place. But they aren't obnoxious and in your face either. Beers by the in-house brewers Alligator Brewing are always fun. Of course, you won't like them all, but what they do brew is well-crafted, well-thought out, and fun. Pineapple Basil Saison was a personal favorite. Service is always positive and everything is balanced out by that distinctly Gainesville team. If you live here, you know what I mean. Perfect for guests, a great watering hole for residents.

I can't be sure of how "tall" Paul is, but he's a stand-up guy for giving me quite a few great nights out. Tall Paul's offers a rowdy crowd pretty much any night of the week with competitive specials, tall pours of their in-house craft beer (some award-winning I will add), and live music on the weekends. The Venue Squeezed into Downtown Gainesville, Tall Paul's is readily identified by the all-grey paint job and large open windows facing the street. A large half-circle bar stretches across the entire place, so whether you head to the back for a show or off to the side for darts, shuffleboard, or foosball you will have easy access to buy the next round for your group. Even when the place gets crowded it generally isn't impossible to find somewhere to sit, though you may have to make friends at one of the larger wooden tables that line up against the East wall. That ginormous window stays open pretty much every night, but medium to large turnouts will mean yelling at your friends in place of talking to them so consider the type of night you're after before committing. The Vibe Of the options in downtown I'll have to award Tall Paul's the medal for most diverse crowds. The local craft beer was my original reason for giving the place a try, but they sport a full bar that I think the long-time locals seek out more typically. This pretty much results in a blend of college kids, coworkers, and old coots seeking out a crazy night. Live music is definitely a win for me, but usually if you don't come in time for happy hour you get slapped with a modest cover charge. Local musicians are worth it in my eyes, and it also helps temper the crowd. Service is also pretty solid most nights, with a little leeway granted for the primetime evenings. Since I go to geek out on Alligator Brewing beers, I tend to have questions and the 'keeps' are all well-versed on the taps currently pouring (and have no qualms with dishing out a taste of them). Final Thoughts You'll want to have a certain amount of energy saved up to make a full night out of Tall Paul's but there's plenty going on to keep the party going (plus you like paid to get in so you better make the most of it). They are totally cool with outside foods coming in, and you best believe the local pizza joints are ready to roll over with an order pronto. If your friend is in town and says "Let's go somewhere really fun!" Tall Paul's will be a great choice, but if the mood is more "Let's have a drink and catch up" I may save TP's for the day time or another time.

Very fun place- an enormous garage like feel with very little decor at least when I was visiting. Small, nano brewery set up here like 7venth Sun in Dunedin. Loud, live music. Tons of college students, and a mediocre to surprising bottle list. House beers (Alligator Brewing Co) were all interesting- hopefully they will stay creative and improve. Definitely a fun night spot.

This is a fun bar with tons of delicious beer on tap. My favorite is the Pineapple brew. They have all sorts of bar games (darts, etc) and a live band. This would also be a great spot to watch football. I would return!

Good selection of beers but the staff are all rude and the bathrooms are never clean not uncommon for a bar in a college town but this place just rubs me the wrong way. Perhaps its the fact that it's the only place I've ever had my drink tampered with.

Really neat location. Looks like it was an old warehouse or something, but it's been beautifully restored. Lots of bar seating and plenty of tables too. Very spacious, and on cool nights, they open up the huge, sliding glass windows. Great tap, bottle, and wine selections with good prices. Foosball and shuffleboard tables. GREAT music selections (they had a mix of MJ, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Beatles, rap, etc., when I was there). There is something for everyone, which was apparent because there were so many different types of people there.

Tall Paul's is one of those weird places that everyone goes to. It successfully attracts crowds from all ages and social scenes in a way that most other bars around town fail to do. It's definitely not a place to get a fancy cocktail but they have an excellent selection of beer at a reasonable price. If Stubbies is too expensive for you and the Midnight is too small, Tall Paul's is the answer to your beer cravings. Huge venue, friendly staff, no cover. Solid place.

This place is pretty great no matter what time you show up. There are various games (shuffleboard, giant connect four, etc) that are fun to play while drinking. There is often live music too so it can get pretty loud on weekends.The bartenders are super nice and friendly, and there is large selection of alcohol, so something for everyone.

I enjoy going to Tall Paul's! They have a great beer selection and fun bar games to play. The only thing I don't enjoy is how loud it gets when they have live music playing. It's hard to have a conversation with the noise level at that point.

Really a cool place to go. Its unique in many things such... games... good TVs and most of all beer is good here. I'm not a beer drinker but the other said it was awesome. It was nice to come here and play darts for free while watching a football game too.

I can not fathom why the reviews for Tall Paul's are so bad! It's my favorite new bar in Gainesville, and I love the unique flavor it adds to the rejuvenation of the Downtown area. With a sprawling floor plan and high ceilings, TP's is easily one of the most spacious bars in town. The sizeable sud roster is packed with local brews from Swamphead, Alligator Brewing Co, and many, many more. Oh, and, WAIT FOR IT....Tall Paul's just a acquired a liquor license!!! Woo hoo! I was so excited to throw back a FIreball shot as I enjoyed my yummy Pineapple pale ale. I've seen a few complaints about the acoustics, but Uncle Morty's Rhythm Cream was tearin' the place down on Friday night and I thought every note sounded positively funk-a-licious. Maybe you'll get better sound in a theatre, but this is a bar, people! I just need it to sound good enough to get me groovin on the dance floor and that certainly happened! I had a fabulous time at Tall Paul's this weekend and will definitely be back on future Gainesville adventures.

Ok....Welll.....the first time I came here I had a fantastic time (as you can see in my first review)...but my second visit here wasn't so hot. First of all, we were greeted with a cover charge. Wtf? Is this a club? B/c this is why I go to bars...so I don't have to pay a freaking cover! Another reason I go to bars? I like to be able to hear myself talk! The first time I went here, the background music was awesome! Classics mixed in with some top 40...quiet enough to have a conversation but loud enough to enjoy the song. Our second visit had a live band. Band was good...BUT. That place is in NO WAY built with the acoustics to handle a live band. It was LOUD...and I mean LOUD. It was so loud that we seriously considered asking the manager to ask the band to tone it down (what a bummer huh?). It was so loud that I had to show the bartender my ID so I could close out (she couldn't hear me yelling my name inches from her ear). She then went on to thank me saying "We love it when people do that!"...so you're saying the noise in this place is a normal thing? Awesome. So why three stars instead of two or one? well, as I mentioned before, the space is awesome and huge; not claustrophobic like many of the other beer bars in town. Beer selection is good and as far as I can tell the prices are decent, although they don't post the prices on their board (another con IMO). Tall Pauls, I really liked you in the beginning, I sincerely hope you do not continue to disappoint me.

Not a fan at all. (1) They charge a cover, for bar with lousy acoustics. (2) The beers are way overpriced, drafts start around $5 and go up from there. (3) They actually had a descent band playing, but the acoustics are so horrible it was listening to a concert in the bottom of a cave - very echoey and way too loud. (4) They're dishonest!! The beer I ordered was listed at $3.75 on the menu, yet they insisted on charging $5 for it, saying, "oh well, the menu is outdated"

What this place lacks in ambiance it makes up for in beer selection and ample space. It's just a big box with a bunch of tables, a pool table, a few TVs, and a bunch of taps. Get a sample. Ask for a recommendation. Take a shot in the dark. I can't imagine seeing a band here or paying the subsequent cover. Stick to game days or the random afternoon when you need something other than PBR.

This is not my type of bar. In fact, its not much of a bar. They've got their selection of beer, but that's where it ends. The bartenders aren't friendly or attentive or helpful for that matter. They've got three TVs but its so big and far away that makes you feel like they're not that big. The decor is bull****. I suppose they think because they're downtown they can throw some things together and call it "trendy" but it's not. This used to be a parking lot..and if you look down you'll see the lines for the parking spots still visible. The walls have a bunch of james bond posters. There's a telephone booth near the bathrooms but no fake rotary telephone. The seating sucks! You either have to sit near the walls, or up front at the bar but either way, service is shoddy! Also they dont have any shots or mixed drinks, just beer and wine. Also, the wine selection is crap. And...they have no bar food. Their hygiene from what I could see of glasses being washed...somewhat questionable... If you want to impress your wannabe hipster date, by all means go here. But for 90% of the population this bar is a waste of space.

Not bad.... to me this place is new since it wasn't there when I lived in Gainesville. But anyhoo, the drinks are cheap, the place is nice and open, the dancing is good, so A+ in my book. Boo to the $5 retarded cover that they charge at the door; rather pay more for my drinks than pay $5 at the door. And my boo point #2 is the ruuuude bouncer at the door. I don't know what kind of power trip that guy's on, but he can go remind himself that he's just a glorified security guard.

This place is the definition of meh. They have a decent selection of beers. That's the positive. The negatives start with them having live music: the warehouse looking interior has terrible acoustics and regardless whether the band is any good, this makes them sound terrible and way too loud. They also charge a cover when there's a band. So you pay to stand around drinking 5-6 dollar beer and lose your hearing. Awesome. My last gripe with this place is their 10 dollar minimum for credit cards. Just seems greedy. Initially I thought this place might be a nice alternative to Stubbie's and Stein's, but there are better bars downtown. Try The Midnight a block down for a more relaxed atmosphere and no cover.

Where to start.... Tall Paul's is not a hipster bar. Hipsters would not be caught dead in a place like this. They wouldn't be found "in a place like this"-adjacent. Not even ironically. For the most part, I found the patrons to be slightly preppy, very casual, college students or recent grads. There was a band, and a $3 cover at the door. I had forgotten I was in a college town and that bars can still get away with this because college kids don't know any better yet. As everyone mentioned before, the acoustics are awful in this place and you have to shout in the ear of the person you're talking to. Even then I couldn't hear everything being said. The band was alright, but nothing special. Seemed like just a couple a dudes who play together in their spare time. There was room to dance, but no one bothered until about 1 am when a couple of drunk girls decided to twirl about. The beer selection is decent and not too expensive, ranging from $2.50 on the low end to about $4.25-5 on the high end. The bar staff was nice and attentive enough the night I was there (a Friday) and I didn't have to wait to be served. Would I go back? I suppose, if that's where the group wanted to go. Will this become my regular hang out? Not a chance.

Good place with a long S shapped bar and warehouse feel. No great beer specials or low prices, but good selection of beer on tap. Didn't care for the beer brewed in house but cool to see the owners brewing it through the glass. Overall a good place to go downtown if you are looking to avoid the college dancing scene. Also, only shuffle puck board in the area for my fellow northerners.

I have been here many times, because for some godawful reasons people I know always want to meet there. I agree with many of these reviews - a cover is ridiculous, and it's WAY TOO LOUD. When I mentioned it to Tall Paul himself he scoffed and replied, "If you want peace and quiet stay at home". No, not peace and quiet, just a volume that allows me to speak and hear my friends. That's why people go to bars - to hang out with their friends. We always end up in the gross little alley next to the bar so that we can hear each other. The giant Connect-4 game is cool, and there's some decent beer, but I can get that anywhere.

Worth it to come here just for Alligator Brewing Co. Yes, they brew their own beer at Tall Paul's, and it is AWESOME. Tried the Habanero Smoked Ale, Bombshell Blonde, and the Fat Guy something or other Porter. All three were delicious, ESPECIALLY the habanero beer! To be honest, I'd take Alligator beer over Swamphead any day of the week. I don't have the same issues with the space here that some other people did. I liked that there was plenty of room for my friends and I to sit, stand, hang out. I really liked the games they have available. And if you have an issue with the live band being too loud, don't go on a night when there's a live band! The bouncer reduced the cover for our group when he realized we were just there to drink. The band ended up being really good though! We found that if we stayed closer to the front, the volume level was much more acceptable. The beer prices were also comparable to other bars in the area that serve craft beers and microbrews (GHOB, Stubbies, the Top). I will definitely be back!

The service as well as the number of beers on tap makes this place desirable. The reason I rate this place as a-ok, though, is because of it's ambiance. It's an awkwardly large space both vertically and laterally, and the arrangements of the seating makes me feel like I'm in an elementary school cafeteria. The glass room behind the bar should be made to use, they should serve some sort of food to make sense of all the square footage, and perhaps hire a DJ because the music makes me want to scoot after one beer.

Some good beers on tap, but room for improvement. Decor seemed nonexistent, but not really in a cool way, like it could have been. It just seemed kind of half-finished or something. Whatever music was playing was dreadful. Super huge bar is pretty nifty. There is room for improvement, and potential.
