My husband went to Ruby's with a friend from the neighborhood and was expecting a great Southern meal based on his friend's reviews. The staff was very friendly and greeted his friend (a regular). My husband ordered UN-sweet tea -- strange, I know, especially for the south but sweet here is usually like syrup and he didn't want to complicate things by ordering half/half. He was given sweet tea, but decided not to make a fuss. Next, he ordered the fried chicken sandwich and was asked if he wanted dark or white meat. He chose dark. He also asked them to please not put any mayo on the sandwich (he hates it) and was assured that they DO NOT put mayo on their sandwiches. When his sandwich arrived, he wasn't quite sure if he was being punked or what. It was two pieces of white bread, slathered in mayo with a fried chicken thigh WITH ALL THE BONES in between! I'm not sure if this is typical, but when would you ever get a sandwich with bone-in meat? What if he had just picked it up and bit into it? He peeled off the mayo-coated bread, and picked at the chicken (which he admits tasted good). The waitress came and asked if he wanted a refill of his "UN-SWEET" tea (she specifically stated un-sweet). He said yes, please and she filled his glass up again with SWEET tea. My husband didn't want to complain because his friend knew the people there and he didn't want to embarrass him. If one of these things had happened, he might think it was just an accident. But you can't help but wonder if they were thinking, "If we screw up every single part of this guy's order, maybe he'll never come back." If that was the case, they definitely succeeded!

One of my favorite restaurants ever. My favorite right now is Oxtail. The sides are always really good. I was lucky enough to meet Ruby when she was here with us. The entire Moore family are really cool people. Mr. Moore worked in the Alachua County Schools system for 40 years, I think, before him and his wife decided to open the restaurant. It is all based around Ruby's actual home cooking and is just literally one of the coolest experiences. I always get take out, but the one time I did eat there Ruby was our server, and I have never had strawberry sweet tea taste that good in my life.

You would never expect an eatery here. Zoning is strange in this town. A family owned, friendly, home cookin place. Felt like we were in someone's house being fed. Friendly service, fast, healthy portions. 2 dining areas, small, but sufficient. Quaint, personal pictures, posters, many religious but all good natured. Decor is an experience, love these hole in the walls. Food was good, hard to fail for breakfast. Hubby wants to return to try their infamous fried chicken. Parking lot across the street is available if you need.

I don't eat at Ruby's often, as it can sometimes take too long at lunch, but I always enjoy my experience when I do eat there. My heart on the other hand usually doesn't feel the same way. I wish I didn't like southern cooking so much. Part of the reason why I enjoy going to Ruby's is being able to look at all the photos and art that's hanging on the walls. You get a sense of family and warmness eating here, even through you might not be part of the family. It's usually not busy, so it's fairly relaxing eating here. Sometimes they do have their TV turned up a bit too loud, but then again listening to soap operas over fried chicken is kind of fun in an odd sort of way. I've tried a few of their menu items, but generally stick with their fried chicken or various breakfast options. You'll get plenty of food when you eat here, but it's just not very flavorful most of the time. While I like eating here, the food could use some work. Sometimes the fried chicken tastes like it was fried a bit too long, and on one occasion it was not cooked through all the way. Off their breakfast menu, I usually go with a waffle, eggs and bacon...sometimes with a side of fried okra because it's hard to resist when you can order lunch and breakfast items at the same time. While large, their hamburgers just didn't do it for me. I like my burgers more plump and grilled. These tasted more pan fried as if they'd been cooked in their juices too long. If they could get things more consistent and work on seasoning things just a bit more, I think it would go a long way to making Ruby's food shine brighter. I really want to give Ruby's a 4 star rating, but the food just isn't quite there yet.

Ruby's is a small un-assuming little hole-in-the-wall, that **NEVER** disappoints! I've been here 4 times now and each time, the food has been incredibly good! 1st Visit: Gator Burger. A monstrous beast at 1 full pound of beef. Seasoned perfectly, throughly and evenly cooked throughout, served on between two slices of thick texas toast. For the smaller appetite, the 1/2 lb Jr. Gator Burger is available. 2nd & 3rd Visit: Steak Sanwhich, which they call "The Saint". Delicious -- nuff said. 4th Visit: Fried Chicken Dinner. 3 of the absolute biggest pieces of chicken I have ever seen, anywhere. Moist, Juicy and Delicious. Prices: Inexpensive -- Gator Burger was $5.99, Steak Sanwhich was $8.99, Fried Chicken Dinner was $7.99.

My fried chicken was good, agree with previous reviewer it needed a bit more seasoning, but I could shake that on. I got a chicken sandwich version of this and it was very moist and delicious. My friend had friend fish, and that wasn't the best, but his fried collard greens were really good. The mac and cheese was good, not great. The place has a diner like feel inside and the bathrooms could be cleaner, but it was a good

The food here is all good reasonably priced and makes me feel good when I'm done eating it. I recommend the fried okra, if you're into that kind of thing, the grits, the catfish breakfast the fried chicken- anything. You won't go wrong. Check out the blueberry de'lite it sure is something. And come hungry. I'm not sure I made this clear- please patronize this place. If I close my eyes and pick something off the menu randomly it is good.

This is by far one of my favorite places in Gainesville. It is a cozy homey place ran by a family who is dedicated to perfection of food. Miss Ruby is always a ray of sunshine when you go into her store. The place is decorated with family pictures and local community memorabilia. It reminds me of a 70s-80s diner. The food is amazing. The fried chicken is lightly fried and is served naked or smothered. It is utterly amazing, not to greasy and nice and crispy. Get it with a side of pita chips. I recommend getting it naked with a side of gravy. The truly most amazing menu item is the ox tail. This place makes the best gravy oxtail I have every had. Nice and tender with a homemade gravy that is superb in all aspects. Get the cornbread, its delicious.

I first wrote a review on my blog ( jimmyconner.blogspot.com in August, 2008). Frankly, I think Ruby's is the best restaurant in Gainesville. The food is lovingly served by Ruby, her husband, Johnny (a local teacher), or their son Johnny II. I have eaten there many times and never had anything that did not get a first-class rating. The fried chicken is perfect, veggies out of sight, pork chops delicious, and the salads over the edge. The homemade Southwest dressing is heavenly. Now, all that being said, the desserts are beyond words. Do not miss the Blueberry Delite ("world famous according to Johnny Jr.). Oh, oh, oh.....and the Gator Burger.......a frisbee of beef on garlic toasted bread. MMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm goodness gravious, that's good.

I'm always weary when the bulk of reviews stress portion size. I am equally skeptic when a place has perfect star ratings across the board; a figurative line in the sand daring the oddball review. I really hate to be *that* guy.... but...put flatly...this is definitely NOT a five-star establishment; it's more like barely hanging on to three! Why? Ox Tail- Cooked decently enough but overall lackluster and boring. Some salt and a longer, slower temperature (ideally braised with a flavorful liquid reduced and poured over the protein) would have sent this over the top-- there was no sauce of which to speak. The meat was desperately under salted. At least it was tender (its saving grace). Mac-n-cheese- Nobody home here! Overcooked pasta. No salt (again). Clumpy dried "cheese sauce" bits. Mashed Potatoes- Decent texture, no flavor, no salt (yet again). Fried Chicken- PERFECT texture! It was everything sublime fried chicken should be: crispy exterior, juicy inside, moist, it was perfect save for one thing...you guessed it: salt (specifically lack thereof). After I added salt it was much better, only now, if the outside was perfect the actual meat of the chicken was flavorless...I wanted to cry. Brined and properly spiced it would have been the standard by which to hold fried chicken; the Platonic ideal of Fried Chicken-ness.....but not today. Collard Greens- I sound like a broken record...perfect texture. Text book greens only...needed an acidic component...oh yeah...and salt! This place certainly CAN be one of the best restaurants in town. The cook has amazing technique (except for mac-n-cheese) but for whatever reason is too restrained when it comes to actually seasoning his/her food. Fear not paprika, cayenne, nor herbs. Use, with more liberties, garlic, onions and other aromatics. Also...learn to execute a basic Bechamel sauce...your mac-n-cheese will love you for it (provided the over cooked pasta was a one-time mistake). And please.... for the love of god..... use salt! PS- Love the decor and ambiance. You can FEEL the pride.

I really, really want to like this place. I do, I swear. The owners are quite friendly and it's not at all what you'd expect for it's location (that's a good thing). However, I have a small little problem with a critical component: The food. I know, maybe my expectations are too high and I've only been there twice. My first experience was awhile back. Yes, the fried chicken is nicely fried and pretty tasty. Sure beats going to any fast food place for that. The sides were unmemorable. Why? Because I don't really remember them. My second visit was today, as I went in for a to-go order. After reading the reviews for Ruby's again, I had to try "The Saint" which everyone says is delicious (which has been renamed to the Pleasant Street Sub, btw). It's a steak sandwich, as others noted, and grilled sirloin with onions, peppers, and provolone to be exact. Oh, and some kind of special sauce. Ugh. How does that describe it? They were out of sub rolls, so it came on texas toast. Sort of. You know what makes texas toast? Being toasted. A square slice of bread does not texas toast make. It was a soggy mess, requiring a fork. For the steak, I'm not sure if it was sirloin or rubber, because my jaw still hurts from attempting to chew it (and had to spit out a couple pieces I had to give up on). The special sauce was a little...funky. And instead of provolone, it came with something orange. I don't think it was cheddar, it wasn't american...I couldn't place it. All in all, it was a very disappointing lunch and a waste of $7.50 or so. The fries tasted ok, despite having the texture of a wet noodle. I suppose if I have a craving, I might go back for the fried chicken and fish lunch special. Might.
