I was hesitant about trying this place, because of the reviews about the service...but a friend wanted to meet up here, so I came cautious. However, it should be noted that they're under new management now, so it seemed promising. The service didn't suck...my cashier was nice and smiled! I ordered their iced chai latte, because on Wednesdays it's apparently a $1 off. They also have a $1 off for other things depending on the day of the week. My iced chai latte was okay, a little milky, but okay. Maybe next time I'll try something else. They have a good selection of teas and coffee to choose from. The ambiance is nice. Great place to study or catch up with a friend. I went around 2PM and it wasn't crowded. Plenty of outlets and board games to play with friends. They have an outside patio, which is nice and shaded (and also has outlets!).

My girlfriend and I went to Maude's recently to study for exams and enjoy coffee that wasn't from Starbucks. We had both heard great things about Maude's so we were very excited to try it out. She had an Iced chai latte. She was satisfied with it, although she said the taste of the honey and cream overpowered the rest of the drink. On top of that, the ice melted much too quickly and instead of cooling the drink down, the drink became watered down. Overall she says it was satisfactory but could use improvement. I ordered the Maude's iced coffee. When I received my drink I got a large cup of black coffee, with ice in it. Okay. I got them to fix the order, although I'm convinced that they just poured cream into my cup because there was a layer of foam, a layer of coffee, and a layer of cream in my cup. None of it tasted pleasant at all; even after mixing it up to try to get a blend of the "flavors." It was very bitter and watered down. I felt very little effort was placed into making my coffee taste good and they could not do the simple job of matching the description on the menu. Overall it was an unpleasant experience and we probably won't be going back anytime soon.

Great, local coffee shop. Decent sized sitting area allows you to get work done, and a large outside sitting area is great for socializing. Prices are about the same as Starbucks, so there's literally no downside.

Maude's may be a Gainesville classic, but its pricey sub-par food and service really make this a struggle to enjoy. My hot-chocolate was pretty much just luke warm milk. I would rank one star, but I really really want to like this cafe. Which is a bad reason to spare it the rating it deserves.

Maude's is a Gainesville classic. It brings back fun memories to enjoy a coffee here. I also like visiting this local establishment rather than forking over cash to Starbucks (strangely located directly across the street). Two Maude's favorites: (1) The board games. Grab a beverage and play away. They have lots of classics and some new games. It always makes me happy when I find a game with all the pieces - I think they do a decent job of keeping them intact. (2) The outdoor seating. Love it on a nice evening or in the summertime. I consistently order the raspberry mocha. My husband had a chai latte with no complaints.

If you have not been here yet, you should check it out. It's a Gainesville Landmark. Fun for all ages and they have a small lunch menu and lots of board games. And it's located next to the Hippodrome Theater. What's Hipp-er than that?!

We were looking for a relaxing place, off the beaten path for a good coffee and snack. This answered the call. Many decadent temptations, but we were very content with the toasted Rosemary Cheese bread and coffee. Perfect kickoff to our road trip. We'll be back in the fall.

I like their house blend iced coffee (cinnamonny by and shit) and that they have daily specials. Their large size is bigger and cheaper than Starbucks and they have really tasty bakery treats that, while terrible for you, sure, we're at least made nearby. I ordered a bagel once before work and it took upwards of ten minutes for them to defrost and toast it, and then they forgot the cream cheese. That was pretty lame. The staff needs to be punched in the bum and reminded that no one is nearly as cool as they think they are... But I'm confident that life will teach them that. Until then, they're fast enough and I don't take a snarky look to heart. Always space outside to sit for a bit and handy sun blockers installed, which shows good planning and sense.

$5 for a double latte? You have got to be kidding me. The latte was only mediocre at that. I will definitely be trying something else next time I'm in Gainesville.

I've never been disappointed with the chai lattes and board games. Many good times sitting on the patio in the fall and winter with our warm coffees, games and good times.

I'm curious what everyone that gave Maude's less than 5 stars was thinking. Where else can you go in Gainesville? Starbucks? Maude's in the only place in Gainesville that offers a truly urban cafe experience. Hands down the best (and potentially only) cafe I would visit while visiting my hometown.

Perfect place to grab a coffee and hangout in downtown Gainesville. I love the local brews and the relaxed environment. With a great proximity to the Hippodrome State Theatre, the outdoor seating is a great place to wait before or after the show. you could head over their as an alternative to Starbucks! The sweets are great and the coffee is better. One downside, if you want to play games inside, the tables inside are not the most comfortable. They are extremely short and the seats are too high, leaving very little leg room. Get the right table and you're good to go.

Overpriced food that's not even worth a normal price. Slow, pretentious servers. Terrible coffee and embarrassing espresso drinks. I've eaten here three times because, apparently, I'm a masochist. I have yet to try something here that is nearly worth the amount of money I paid for it. I keep going because I get tired of Starbucks and long for an actual, local, breakfast cafe downtown. And each time, wallet lighter and tastebuds dissatisfied, I remember that I had previously sworn to never return.

Maude's brings it every time. Great staff, great bagels, AMAZING homemade veggie cream cheese, great desserts, great local coffee. Forget the green lady across the street.

Best mix of affordable with good, not-burnt, flavorful coffee that I've found in Gainesville. The atmosphere is really great, love it outside.

When I was at student at UF, I would often venture downtown for a tasty (home made) dessert from this little coffee shop. I have never actually had any of the coffees from here but if the aroma does justice I would say go for it. I came for a visit this past weekend and had the Dolly Parton which is their rendition of the tiramisu; although they have switched from the chocolate to some liquor version it's still quite tasty. I am also a fan of the cheesecake with sour cream topping it's denser than the standard cheese cake but still delish! I will always stop buy when I'm in town visiting friends.

A bit expensive, BUT the ambiance is pretty hip. The booths comfortable, except the two sides are too close so you need to spread out so as not to feel uncomfortable with the person across the way. Went here on a first date and I'd definitely come back. There are board games to play and it's got a chillaxing vibe.

I want to preface this review by saying that if I get coffee downtown, it's almost always going to be at Maude's. Volta is too far away from my apartment, the Bull intimates me, and my neutrality to Starbucks is over come by my desire to support local businesses. That being said, the service here sucks. Like, it's so stereotypical it's comical. Nearly everyone that works there is a sulky hipster. This doesn't bother me because I like their products and, honestly, I don't like people that much either so I'd rather get my food to-go. I always get the Maude's iced coffee or the sweet iced earl grey tea. My favorite food item is the FLT (basically a BLT with fake bacon and vegenaise) They have dollar off deals on certain days of the week, tons of vegan and vegetarian options, and they serve breakfast food until an hour before they close Good place for a coffee date, breakfast, or quiet study time. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Went here for the first time a week ago. It was on a Sunday so people were studying for exams and such. I did my research and checked the reviews before going, so I had an idea of what to expect. All I can say is I wasn't really thrilled. I ordered a cheese sandwich, which to me was a cheap item on the menu for lunch. The bread tasted as if it just passed it's expiration date, but it was nonetheless okay. The employees were a little mean. I felt rushed when trying to order, especially when I'm trying to maintain a budget and consider having something to fill me up. Overall, it's a neat place, but I doubt if I'll be back anytime soon.

Terrible customer service and expensive (although delicious) food and coffee. I suppose you're paying for the seating space and nice atmosphere. The patio is dog-friendly and people smoke out there a lot, so if you don't like either of those things then you won't be comfortable. Check it out only if CYM, Volta, and Sbux are full...

  • Graham C.

Always a great experience. A Gainesville staple, Maude's has delicious bakery treats and great coffee. The only drawback would be the size of the restaurant, which can bottleneck with people ordering, but the outdoor patio makes up for it.

  • JP H.

I paid a visit here today and have to note that it was some of the most unusual service and people interactions I have ever had at a coffee shop. The two girls behind the counter were highly snappish and did not seem interested in my menu choice. When the said item came out (the Alice Wrap) it was definitely one of the smallest wraps I have ever seen. And to top matters off, a fellow customer snarked at a question I asked about a menu item. An intriguing window into Gainesville for me as a visitor - not sure I'd come back to this place though it does seem to have its loyalists.

I sometimes FORCE myself to come here instead of the Starbucks across the street because I like to support local businesses. The service is TERRIBLE. There's some unhappy people back there that don't smile at all. They even give uninviting and judgmental stares to their customers. What's up with that? Their coffee is average; nothing exciting. If you want good coffee, go to Volta. If you want great service, go to the Starbucks across the street.

  • Jose J.

For the most part, it's very good. A little overpriced, but I thought it was worth it. Service is pretty bad, but I'd say the same thing for most of the hipster joints in Gainesville (except for the Top and Civilization).

If you ever want to get the feeling of what Gainesville is all about (aside from Football), Maude's is definitely the place to spy on the locals. The town is like a min Portland, where people just like me, are still stuck in the 1990's. We have been going to Maude's since the 1990's, in fact. My favorite thing to do is sit on the patio and enjoy the Hippodrome towering over you while being spare-changed by a bum. Being slightly annoyed by the super rich college girl sitting one table over complaining that they closed the only American Apparel store in town, so she has to rack up miles in her Escalade driving to Orlando. It is all quite ironic and oh-so-Gainesville... (aka Portlandia). Sip that overly sweet Chai Latte and stare off into space, as Maude's plays the entire Sonic Youth "Daydream Nation" album for your enjoyment. Ahhhhhhh...some things never change.

  • Luke T.

Extremely hot, not enough seating, awkward ordering area, and a distant restroom that requires a key all bring down the star rating on this otherwise quirky and cute cafe. There are some saving graces. Prices are fairly reasonable, board games abound, plenty of patio seating, and an ok food menu bring Maude's in at a solid three stars. I was told it was a good place to study, but given the large amount of customers crowding around the scant tables, I'm not sure I agree.

Maude's is an experience. Situated next to the Hippodrome, this is the perfect place to pop in after a show and relax -- maybe. The atmosphere is chill, you get lots of students sitting around, studying, or you get people meeting up over tea or coffee. There are games available if all you want is game night with a few friends. There's indoor and outdoor seating, but it gets crowded really quickly, especially if you want to study inside. My favorite is the outdoor seating -- something about lights strung up against the backdrop of the night sky really gets me. They also have a private parking lot, so it's nice not to have to deal downtown parking. The coffee is good, though not as good as Karma Cream's. Their English Breakfast Tea was amazing, but sadly it was just a temporary item on the menu. Try it if they have it. lol. They do have a wide variety of sweets and baked goods, but I've never felt the inclination to try any. Their food is meh -- I had their BLT twice, and it was dry each time. I guess I kept hoping it would get better. lol. After trying a few more unmemorable dishes there, I gave up eating at Maude's. Honestly, though, everything above would have rated this place four stars, at least. If only they had consistent service. On occasion, I've had amazing customer service (a smile, prompt service, etc.). It's a shame the majority of my experiences there felt slipshod though. Now, I have nothing against the "hipster" or "alternative" look (I honestly think that kind of style is amazing and I wish my body type and personality fit with those clothes.), but it felt like customers who didn't look a certain way were treated with less enthusiasm. I know, maybe I was being irrational and those were the regulars; but even after going there at least two or three times a week and learning the names of the girls behind the counter, I still wasn't treated the same way. I'm not asking for extreme enthusiasm or perks, but I am asking that they take my order when I'm ready and not look at me like I'm interrupting their conversation. I once ordered a specialty coffee (that was on their main menu), and they told me they didn't feel like making it and if I would order something else (I ordered a simple cup of tea after that.). I'm sure you understand why I stopped going there; ANY other coffee shop (even Starbucks) would be much happier with my patronage. Other negatives, they used the free downtown wifi, so it was shifty, at best; whenever it didn't work, they suggested we connect to the neighboring Starbucks' wifi. Even then, the distance made the connection slow if you were sitting inside. Also, they share bathrooms with the entire plaza. So you have to ask for a key if you need to go; at least the bathrooms were clean most of the time. lol.

Love the non corporate feel of Maude's Cafe. Sitting outside in the late morning reminds me of an out of the way European cafe. Artisan bread and coffee just great. Will come back for lunch.

I really wanted to like Maude's, like some other reviewers have stated, but during my stay in Gainesville I always ended up wishing I had gone to Starbucks. And I don't really like Starbucks. The staff wasn't too friendly at Maude's, everything was overpriced, and, by the time I took out half of the ice in my iced coffee, I was left with 1/3 of a small cup of coffee. I guess that's what the eye-roll meant behind the counter when I asked for light ice. Anyway, I tried several times, but I can't deal with Maude's. And why isn't anyone talking about how bad it smells in there? Am I crazy?

Maude's, which I'd not visited for some time until having coffee and dessert there last night with friends both has changed--and has not. They've renovated the interior, making it a bit warmer and, via the use of vivid hues of blue-green, a happy, even exciting atmosphere. The service and quality of desserts however has not changed: while more personal than a Starbucks and having a fairly ample dessert menu, the desserts are not of the same high standard as The Top. The coffee I cannot really address because I always get an Italian soda when at Maude's and they make this just fine. The service is . . . spotty. The girl at the front counter wasn't rude, per se, but seemed hurried and disinterested and then remarked to her coworker "I've just felt so . . . flighty . . . today". Ok? Everyone can have an off day, but it's seemed every time I've ever been to Maude's at least one of the staff is under such signs of Saturn. Gainesville needs a good indie coffeehouse. But we need it closer to campus, and it needs to remain open most of the night. And it needs to have great desserts, like Tart to Tart near UCSF in San Francisco. Other college towns have such, why can't we Gators?

I almost feel bad that I have to give this place 1 star but then I remember the times I left with regret for having gone there. Coffee- ok, but Starbucks is much better and cheaper! Desserts- not so great. I had the cheesecake and it was just plain bad. Service- DEPLORABLE!!!! I have NEVER had good service here. The employees are bitter. Never a smile, hello, thank you, how are you, or a goodbye. They make you feel as though you are a huge inconvenience for being there. They are all wannabe "hipsters" and seem to think they are way better than everyone else and their shit doesn't stink...well, it does! I have tried to give this place a chance many times because I love to support local small business but this place honestly doesn't deserve it. Sadly, I go across the street to Starbucks where I feel welcome.

  • Yeni S.

I only continue to go to Maude's because I'm too cheap to buy my own copy of Scrabble. Luckily, all of the board games are in the back of the store, so I don't ever have to get too close to the snooty employees. Everything about Volta, which is right down the street, is infinitely better, so if you're a regular coffee drinker, forget about Maude's and go there instead.

  • Downtown G.

Maude has some of the worst customer service in Gainesville. Surly, rude, antagonistic, uncaring and bitchy. I am going to say what everyone else is tip-toeing around: If some people in Gainesville didn't feel the need to support local over big, bad Starbucks, this place would have been out of business years ago. If Starbucks had not come to town and garnered sympathy for Maude's, locals would have gotten sick of their nonsense by now and stopped patronizing them. Most of those patrons know that Maude's is a pit of Hell. They would give up their slice of Satchel's pizza before they would admit that, though. There are much better places to spend local, than this sorry excuse for a cafe.

I love downtown Gainesville, because I am a people watcher. There isnt a whole hellofalot to do down there, there arent any talented street performers (occasionally you will get a tuba or some kid with a neon hula hoop) The Hippodrome looms over the SunCenter like a gigantic grey temple that no one but the richest amoung us can afford to go in and pay homage to. I happen to be a serious coffee drinker, and so is my boyfriend. We both can drink it at all hours of the day. I am picky about my coffee. I will not set foot in a starbucks unless i am forced too by someone who has no taste , and then i get a hot chocolate. Maudes isnt the best coffee in gainesville (that goes to dunkin donuts) but it is good coffee. It also has a good atmosphere, especially for us people watchers. I have never personally ordered food there, I have seen others around me do so and they always look a bit or more disappointed. This time that we went was at night, 10ish. I was hoping this wasnt a night where some really sensitive guy and his merry roommate were playing (badly) acoustic guitar in the outside area because Maudes will charge you to sit outside and have your ears bleed. Last i saw it was 2 bucks for that. This time it was free and clear. We sat down and this is where you must forgive Maudes, the servers arent exactly plentiful, or quick. They arent gonna chat you up when they get to you and they arent going to look like they have been awake for awhile. forgive them. I got a Cafe Vienna (coffee, cinnamon syrup, milk, whipped cream, sugar) and James got a Latte. We both shared a Peanut Butter brownie. came out to 6 and change. Our hot beverages were delicious and warm, the brownie was very rich, sweet, and nuttery. People around us were playing games, using the WiFi , and just soaking up the beautiful night we all were blessed with. There isnt another place like this downtown, its dependable coffee and tea, and really what more do I want ??

  • Coleen T.

Yes, the staff is the typical coffee house type that isn't the most polite or bubbly, but the coffee is great, especially the iced mochas, and the atmosphere rocks. Tons of board games fill the shelves and they have nice outdoor seating for people watching. I definitely recommend for a late night chill spot.

I used to like going here, but I've had too many bad experiences with their staff. I consistently get bad attitudes from their grouchy/disgruntled employees. It's a nice venue for playing board games with your friends over some coffee and over-priced desserts, but don't expect a warm and inviting staff. If you want that, go across the street to Starbucks, where I've had nothing but good experiences. I wanted to like this cafe, but their staff have ruined it for me. Good coffee, nice venue, bad service. 2 stars.

  • Leah S.

Every time I try this place I get so annoyed at their lack of customer service. How can one group of local people have no clue how to interact with customers after being in business so many years. It seems that each and every conversation about his place brings up the same comments... they are "rude and unhelpful"... I won't go there again. It's such a great location and awesome patio if only management would hire right and train a little, just a little!

  • Chelsea B.

I try to frequent this place often, just so I'm not giving my business exclusively to Starbucks. Unfortunately, Gainesville has a definite lack of local coffee shops. Maude's is decent, but nothing special. However, I'm a tea fanatic, and Maude's has a great selection. I'm not a picky coffee drinker, but the latte I tried once was pretty good too. At least it didn't taste like the syrupy crap that Starbucks tries to pass off for a latte. Maude's also has a great music selection, the typical hipster/indie stuff that I love. Last semester, when I was studying daily for the LSAT, I would come here about once a week. It's been several months since I took that awful exam, and it's been a while since I've been back to Maude's. Maybe once the semester starts to get crazy I'll tire of Library West and head downtown.

I would really like to love this place, but I just ordered a tea here and when I asked the barista if she could rinse out the mug first she rolled her eyes in a silent "f**k you" to me. The place has a nice atmosphere and they play cool music, but the staff has been infected with a self-important, cooler-than-you attitude. The food is over-priced. The coffee is lousy. But if you need a place to study, it's usually pretty good. Bring your own mug and get a discount, just be prepared to be negatively judged by the staff.

  • Keilani R.

My latte from Maude's had, like, three bubbles worth of foam. I mean, the coffee itself was fine, but a latte without the foam is just a cafe con leche. Also (and I'm not letting it affect my rating because I could've imagined it), I'm pretty sure the cashier flicked my debit card at me because I turned away for a moment to talk to my friends. Maude's was a convenient place for me and my friends to hide from the rain and people-watch. And the interior is hipster-cool, with strange things on the walls and lots of fliers and alternative magazines. This is by no means a bad review, per se. I guess if you're looking for a non-chain cup of coffee, Maude's isn't the worst you could do. But I personally prefer Volta any day, and frankly, I've had better lattes from the Starbucks baristas at the HUB.

  • Sasha P.

I agree with Lili Z. Maude's gets talked up a whole lot in Gainesville and I'm not really quite sure why. I ordered my usual, a chai latte with honey. It was okay but I would have rather gone to Starbucks across the street. Though Maude's has its' character, the staff wasn't as friendly as I expected. They kinda brushed off my friend and I from the second we walked in the door. I'm not sure if it was because we weren't Indie-type people but I definitely felt unwelcome. What I do know is that many people like to come here and hang out in the outside patio area or they will study inside. I will say that there are a lot of seating options at Maude's so it's no surprise that people like to hang out. It's set in a nice section of downtown Gainesville that houses many other restaurants, shops, etc. Parking is around the corner in the lot or on the street if you can find a spot! At night, it's nice to take a stroll because Maude's has cool lighting for the outside seating area. I would consider giving Maude's another try the next time I'm in Gainesville but it really didn't make an impression on me the first time. Perhaps I'll order a dessert and see if I've changed my mind.

Like previously mentioned, this spot is a better alternative to Starbucks. The coffee was tasty...and super cracked out...it wasn't such a smart idea to order an iced coffee @ 10p...it was so hard to sleep that nite! The pistachio mousse brownie was DELICIOUS!!! At first glance, I thought it was a some kind of Andes peppermint-related brownie, but who knew it would be a nutty & creamy alternative! I loved it! I kept telling my boyfriend i will take it home, but by the end of our hanging out it disappeared in my stomach! LoL. I plan to come back here someday just to people watch...great spot to do it!

  • Bela T.

I love Maudes. Not for the coffee. Not for the food. The desserts are average but enjoyable enough. What I love most about Maude's is the true coffee shop feel. Volta's coffee is much better but the place feels cold. I can go to Maude's and do homework. Meet up with a friend for a cookie, have a long talk and hangout for a while. Bring my kids for dessert and some board games. The place is just fun. There are also some interesting characters there. I hope Maude's never goes away. The only negative is a glass of wine is ridiculously over priced. 6$ a glass for wine that is about 10$ a bottle.

I found myself in Gainesville for the day yesterday and was pleased to discover Maude's across the street from a Starbucks. Maude's is locally owned, charming and a perfect reason to stay away from major chain coffee sellers. Maude's offers traditional coffee house counter service. Coffees, teas and desserts were evident but I think it has a much more extensive menu . . . I just could not find any indication of it! I noted the fellow in front of me ordering a bagel, which was my quest any way, so I ordered a whole grain bagel. The server asked me if I wanted a breakfast sandwich so I will hazard a guess that eggs and various breakfast meats are also available. The bagel was fresh, properly toasted and served with a container of cream cheese (as opposed to the assumption at many bagel shops that everyone wants a pound of cheese on their bagel). I was disappointed by the lack of a low fat cream cheese option but in Gaineseville, where the population does not seem to be aware that smoking is a healthy hazard, I suppose that low fat concepts are alien, too! My coffee was excellent. Well balanced and not burned. Very flavorful and hot, but not scalding. A great cup. I ate my bagel in the cafe and was pleased with the small cloth covered tables. The table cloths were a nice touch. Accent lamps and a huge supply of board games gave the restaurant a familiar, living room feel. I rather enjoyed it. I returned later in the day and sat outside in the Maude's courtyard. It was a beautiful day and my iced tea was flavorful -- both fruity and floral -- but the superabundance of smokers marred the experience. There is no reason to go to a major chain when Maude's right across the street!

  • Cori W.

It has good location, in the heart of downtown Gainesville but it really can't even call itself a coffee shop, with how terrible the coffee is. If you want "specialty drinks" you'll probably like Maude's a lot, but the coffee is really no better than gas station coffee. Internet was frustratingly slow, so don't expect to do any work. Nice enough place to hang out with friends, though, as long as you drink something that isn't coffee.

Nice homely place. Cool place to hangout with friends over a cofee (or chai latte if you please) and light music. Nice ambience. Option to sit out if weather is good. Also have a decent breakfast menu as i discovered recently.

I've been there a couple of times. The food was okay and the service average. If you hate Starbucks and want local this might be the place for you. I'm don't like coffee (tea person here) and perhaps thats why I find this place merely average - I might be missing their best feature. I'm glad its there, and liked the outdoor seating - but as usual you then have to deal with the smokers. Its funny, I want to like Maude's but it just doesn't click with me.

Not a fan of the food or drink, but like other reviews say, good for killing time with the board games. Makes for a cute first date experience. Things I'm prone to ordering while there is the apple pie ala mode (can't mess that up!), the milk steamers, and italian soda (hit or miss, but still good).

This is sort of like their website?? facebook.com/pages/Gaine… I did not eat here. I'm always pleased when towns have ghetto hipster country blends. Maude's handles all the left wing you can get in a coffee shop. Flannel-covered staff with warm smiles, board games, inexplicable postcards, ultra-liberal newspapers, that weird flyer drop-off counter near the "sink" just to the right of the entrance, free wi-fi... and acceptable prices. They do charge extra $0.25 for plastic And when I went it was attached to some epic Florida nature photo gallery! That was a trip. But could you please tune the piano? Sigh

Maudes is a great break from the corporate atmosphere that entrenches Gainesville. It is fresh and homemade, it has character and it is a great place to get work done. The people there are friendly and it is a great place to people watch. It has an interesting and eclectic group of people that come in, and a lot of people come for first dates. The conversations provide a great break from study. Worth the trip.

Visit Date: 03.27.2010 I had a thirst for an iced coffee, and I saw this place right across the street from the Starbucks, so I decided to give this place a go. Not bad coffee, and prices include tax. Their coconut creme chocolate cupcake was tasty as well. I also like how they have specials depending on the specific day of the week, so keep ya eye out for that.

Perhaps the reason service has not improved (at least in the last 2 years since I've been visiting Maude's) is that we all take to yelp to complain rather than actually contacting a manager. My experiences with the staff ranges from awkward to offensive. Sure, customers can be really annoying whether they intend to be or just as a by product of them being annoying people in their everyday life, but I have never seen a customer's behavior warrant the rudeness of the staff. The one time I ordered food (they bring it out to you), I watched from the opposite corner as the girl came from behind the counter, saw a friend outside the door, left Maude's with my plate and stood there holding my food for a solid 7 minutes before saying goodbye and coming in to find me. Soggy toasted english muffin. Volta is a great alternative just a block away but every once in a while I just want a simple sub-$3 iced coffee and head into Maude's...and every time I feel like I've been defeated and vow never to go back.

i love going to this place, but for the atmosphere and games. i love that you can sit around and play games and its a favorite on double date nights. there's no waiters, so no pressure to leave. however, if i'm being completely honest, their desserts are mediocre at best. the cakes are dry and they're cookies are hard. their coffee isn't bad, but i've definitely had better. all in all, this place is pretty cool and hippy but if you're going for the food, you will be sorely disappointed.

i really want to like maude's. it's close to where i live, and my fiance and i will come here for coffee dates. i also go pretty far out of my way to support local businesses. i'm impressed that they have made it so long with that starbucks being there. to be perfectly honest, i'd be happier if it was, you know, a nice place. there was a night we went here about an hour and a half before it closed. it was a friday night, but it was dead for some reason. there was us and maybe three or four other people. before we ever ordered, the person behind the counter said "i just want to let you know we're closing in about twenty minutes." and we were like, "why? don't we have an hour?" she looked pretty annoyed (everything was already cleaned and packed up) and pointed at a sign on the door [explaining the ability to close early], and she was like "we close early if we're slow." yeah, that's great, but you're still open, people are still here, and we're standing here and want our god damn drinks. we sat down and figured we could squeeze in one game of uno. she walked by a few times to take out the trash, wipe down the tables, etc. and kept looking at us and what we were doing. the other people left just because it was uncomfortable. i'm in the food industry and am very respectful of closing times, etc; i stayed out of spite. seriously. middle fingers up to the man, y'all. i've gotten the vanilla cheesecake twice. both times it had a very weird consistency. it almost felt curdled. i don't know their recipe so i don't know what the fuck happened to it, but it was beyond strange. i got a halloween brownie once, and it was just hershey's brownie with canned frosting and sanding sugar on it. the hot chocolate was just steamed milk and syrup. that's just wrong. that's below swiss miss. i can deal with shitty attitudes. i can't deal with shitty attitudes alongside mediocre food and beverages. i want to like you, maude's.

Service could be a little less clique-ish and friendlier (totally forgot about my dessert order and, upon reminder, received absolutely no apology or even sign that they realized they had made a mistake), but the setting is still pretty cute. Nice place to relax or study.

It's got personality, coffee and desserts. Why would you go to the chain across the street? Downtown offers free wifi, so you've got all you need.

Bottom line, I am reviewing Maude's service; therefore, I couldn't care less about the crowd it attracts, the events it hosts, or games it provides. To date, I have yet to experience decent customer service. You say "thank you" and they don't acknowledge it (personal irritant, but understandably trivial to others). You walk to the counter, and they (honestly, it seems intentional at times) continue their conversation with their co-worker. I don't expect smiling, so I am never upset that they always have the expression that someone smeared shit underneath their noses. However, some might be offended. For two weeks, I tipped every time I ordered. I thought maybe they were grouchy because customers didn't appreciate their work. I get that, too. Nope. Didn't change their demeanor. On one occasion I tipped, the girl tossed the paper next to the register and continued talking. I walked away, and I heard her whine, "I better get tips today." I was floored. Supporting local businesses is important, but Maude's makes it increasingly difficult to uphold this belief. Customer service is important. Simply being nice, not overly nice, not unconvincingly pleasant, is important. I'm no snob. I'll drink shittier coffee someplace else if it means not being treated as if I'm the smelly guy who's pissed himself on the bus.

What to say about Maude's cafe? To be honest, the best thing about Maude's is the location: on a clear evening, you have the splendor of a sunset-suffused sky (too bad the actual setting of the sun is blocked) and later the dark night sky. The Hippodrome is lovely to look at when lit up at night (even if marred by the fire escape); the little while Christmas lights they've hung up are a nice touch too. With that in mind, one of my favorite things to do on a weekend evening are to go to Maude's, sit outside, watch night fall or read some poetry while having a passable cafe vienna with a passable brownie a la mode, all delivered with passable service. This is sometimes followed after 10:00 by a glass of passable red wine during the passable live jazz. Some evenings, and indeed some establishments, are greater than the sum of their parts.

This place is okay, nothing special. I've had a few drinks there, some of their teas and coffees. I'm not a fan of their chai tea and I think their other drinks are sub-par... but I really really like their desserts. I think their carrot cake is amazing! Maude's is a good place to kill some time, it has a slightly depressing interior, so I recommend sitting outside if you can get a spot.

When it's nice outside, go to Maude's Their patio is perfect for reading a book, doing some work, or simply people watching. I've had a few things here. The iced coffee was okay, but it could have been brewed stronger. I had some salad with green apples and cheese in it (sorry, forgot the name) and it rocked. Their chocolate chip cookie has the perfect amount of chewiness and crunch, but I bet it's a heart attack waiting to happen. Their service isn't great, but I'll take it any day so I can sit out on their patio area :)

My favorite hipster coffee joint in Gainesville. (: I too enjoy people-watching, and the most interesting people in town frequent this little shop. These people (who I affectionately call the "Maude Squad") never fail to impress with their neck beards, horn-rimmed glasses, v-necks, knitted skullcaps, and Apple products, no doubt with their fixie locked up out front. In addition to the indie-chic, I also see a fair share of well-dressed businessmen and -women. Maude's appeal is universal. I also love that it's across the street from a Starbucks. Stick it to the Man, man! (; The sitting area is set up with about a dozen small tables. The chairs are a bit rickety, but not uncomfortable. There's (I believe) one small armchair-- they could use a few more, imo. (: The lighting is soft and soothing, and electrical outlets are plentiful (good for me; I'm always "plugged in"). You can pick up either digital downtown or Starbucks wifi. In my experience, both tend to be weak and/or spotty, but usually doable. There's a bookshelf full of board games to play with your friends, fascinating artwork for sale on the walls, and neat indie music (I'm always thrilled to hear something I've got on my ipod!). I have a massive sweet tooth, and their coffees tend to be on the bitter side. I know some people love this, but I have to add a /lot/ of sugar. I usually order a Maude's Iced Coffee (recommended when I asked "what's your sweetest coffee?"), which is still a little bitter for my tastes, but the honey and cinnamon give it a lovely flavor. If you're like me and want to sugar-shock your taste buds, Maude's also makes a mean hot chocolate. (: For the 21+ crowd, they have an interesting assortment of alcohol (I wish I could have tried the chocolate wine they had for a few weeks). My favorite thing here, however, is their Double-up Nickwich with egg, cheese, and Morningstar bacon, served on a hot, crispy croissant. I'm drooling at the thought of it! I've never tried their desserts, but I frequently ogle the dessert case and they look *damn* good. Pay attention to their "dollar-off days" schedule! Their drinks are on the expensive side, and this can take a good 25% off your tab. The bad? Hmm. It does have a distinct smell-- I thought it was peculiar at first, but I'm quite used to it by now. There's a $0.25 fee on plastic transactions that they usually fail to mention (there's a little notice posted by the register if your eyes are sharp enough). I've heard a lot of people complain about the service, but I've *never* had a bad experience here. Some servers aren't the most enthusiastic of people, but they're never rude. From others, I enjoy polite, friendly service. Overall, I love Maude's and would recommend it to anyone. Any minor negatives pale in comparison to the great food and coffee, comfortable atmosphere, and wonderfully bizarre demographic. --------------- Riding RTS? During the week: Maude's (right next to the Hippodrome) is a stone's throw from the 1 and 25 routes on SW 2nd Avenue. It's also a short walk from stops on the 2/10, 6, 11, and 15. If you can brave the walk to the Rosa Parks downtown station, you can get here from pretty much anywhere! Weekends: Maude's is fairly close to stops on the 400, 402, 403, 406, and 407. You can get here from pretty much anywhere if you walk from the downtown station.

Great outdoor seating, quick and friendly service, interesting rock star theme, yummy savory appetizers such as hummus and toasted bread, and good tea. Prerequisites of a good hangout, in my book. They also serve beer, which would be nice on those lazy, warm afternoons on the patio. I really enjoyed coming here with my friend and lazing about as the hipster crowd lounged around, smoking interesting and exotic clove cigarettes and exchanging news. To my non-local eyes, and coming from the laid-back atmosphere of San Francisco, it seems like a cool place to be :) Wish all the non-corporate coffee shops here in the city could be like Maude's.

the only people who like this place are too pretentious to enjoy a coffee from starbucks, have mouths too inexperienced to know what good coffee tastes like, or are do-gooders who want to support their local economy. while i am all for the last option sometimes a place simply does not deserve to be open if they cannot get their act together and this one of those times. stop patronizing maude's and perhaps after it closes something worthwhile will open it's place. burned coffee and food poisoning are not worth dealing with just because you want to play connect four.

If there's anything I miss about Gainesville (besides the springs) it's Maude's. True, the coffee could be better. True, the indoor lighting could be better. But really, who cares about those things when faced with a great porch area, free wifi, great salads and decent people watching? I'll even dare to say that I miss the Farmer's Market days and how flooded the area would get with locals of all kinds. I've spent days of my life sitting in front of this cafe, made some great friends there and had some wonderful conversations. Just a great place to relax and pass the time.

There's a lot of hype about Maude's but honestly, I think it's the most overrated place in Gainesville. The coffee's mediocre and the service is usually worse. Desserts are touch and go, last time I visited three of us had to send them back they were so dry. It isn't terrible, a good place to kill time if you have nowhere else to go.

That whole block by the Hippodrome is a nice little section of downtown Gainesville. Maude's livens it up with live jazz occasionally. I appreciate their chutzpah, trying to compete with the Starbucks right across the street. You can order a whole pot of coffee that they'll brew right after you order it. And--this is the best part--you have a variety of beans and roasts to choose from. Just don't catch a glimpse of the equipment it's brewed in--it reminds me of a scary, Russian, hasn't-been-cleaned-since-the-iron-curtain-fell coffee shop. For that matter, try not to notice the crappy taste of the drip; you're there to enjoy the music! I'd recommend buying coffee from the Starbucks 20 yds. away (tell the manager Avani I say hi) and maybe ordering a dessert. Or... bring a lawn chair and sit on the sidewalk.

I used to throw fits about the "pretentious" "hipsters" or whatever here, too, but then I grew up a little. Bottom line is it's pretty decent for killing some time in a boring, boring town.

Coffee is alright, desserts are mediocre at best (though the brownie sundae is a safe bet) and th service is sporatic if patchy, but this one of the few places where the emo vibe is not so pretentious, location is idea in the heart of downtown G'ville and you can get together with friends for a get-together of board games and friendly chat.

Maudes is a locally owned coffee shop that has been around for years. Starbucks decided to open up a location across the street because of the success of Maudes. Not the other way around! When I was living in Gainesville I'd frequent this place a few times a week. Good coffee drinks, fun desert titles, board games, and across from the Hippodrome with a nice atmosphere. What else can you ask for really? Having lived in New York City, and now San Francisco, I have experienced a variety of coffee shops. But I still daydream about going back to Maudes. So take advantage of its unique charm while you have the chance. You can go to Starbucks anywhere!

Yes it's filled with hipsters, yes they're really pretentious. but I really like it. Board games and coffee are a great mix. The outdoor seating is nice. If you go inside, they always have some movie playing. Their chai tea is really good. The Berliner is very good. Their desserts are awesome, especially the BB King.

Always a good idea to come down to Maudes and enjoy a coffee and dessert (they actually have regular food items now too!). They have indoor and outdoor seating and you can enjoy a variety of board games./ I also believe that they show movies inside now too on a projector. I will definently advise you not to expect great service, because everytime we go we are always looking for the wait staff!

  • Karen O.

Newsflash: Maude's was there before Starbucks. Maude's is a wonderful place for people-watching and their Berliner is absolutely amazing! The atmosphere is very artsy and chill and their staff is very friendly. Their board games are well loved but there are usually enough pieces to get a good game going with your friends. Supporting local businesses is much more important than getting a venti strawberry mocha frappachino.

If you are a fan of burnt coffees this is the place for you. Expect to be judged by a bunch of hippies when you go to this place. It smells kinda funky as well. One star goes to the board games which are always missing pieces. Walk across to Starbucks and even the burnt coffee there is not as bad and the desserts is even better. I was told they serve sweetwater.........I still don't believe it.

Service: abysmal Location: great Atmosphere: nice outdoor patio Entertainment: Live Jazz on Friday and Saturday Night Food: Average Deserts: Mediocre (except for the Crazy Cookies which they almost never have) I like the feel of Maude's, but due to the horrible service and so-so food quality I usually find myself elsewhere. The board games are a great idea (but, they are always missing pieces). I would prefer not to frequent corporate behemoths like Starbucks, but when local business simply refuse to meet reasonable standards of busines operations, what can you do?

  • Laura M.

Whenever I'm home in G'ville (gasp, someone from Gainesville who's not a UF student?!), my girlfriends and I head to Maude's for their desserts named after celebrities, a late night glass of wine over board games, or just people-watching and chatting. It's been there way longer than that monstrosity of a Starbucks across the street, and it saddens me to see them lose any business to that chain. Support local businesses! F Starbucks! F yeah!

    (4)
  • Heather S.

Actually, it's VERY good. You go here for dessert (they are all delicious). And the free wireless connection. And "Napoleon's Dang Quesadillas". And the super-friendly wait staff. And to play Othello. And to escape the Starbuck's across the street. And sometimes the movies. And And And!

Not very good, though the atmosphere and outdoor seating are nice. They simply don't know how to make espresso.

Located right next to the Hippodrome its a nice place to go hang out, listen to music, play board games, get dessert and coffee. Used to play many games of Uno, Payday and Scrabble with friends and order a large slice of Carrot Cake and their coffee and hot chocolate treats are good too. The weird thing is that its located right across the street from Starbucks, but this place stays open later and artsy fartsy.

I spent a couple of hours here while I was in town for the day. I got the FLT (fake bacon L T) and it was delicious. When I ordered a large latte I didn't realize HOW LARGE the cup was so I wasn't able to finish it - still delicious though!

I do like the music, I like that the inside feels like a old cafe, I like the friendly staff. Outdoor seating was exactly what I wanted! I don't think the food is good. My crossaint was cold and not good. It made me crave for Starbucks crosssaint, which goes to show how bad it was. Iced tea was ok. not bad, not great. The people are fun and trendy and its why I went there in the first place. Got a decent amount of studying done until I noticed the hot guy to my right. But, hey, thats not exactly a con. Good study spot, I think. Can't wait to try Volta

Had the worst experience at Maude's recently. It's always been a place to hang out for hours without feeling the pressure of continuously buying. For the past 4 years me and my friends have frequented and given a lot of business to this place. Recently, however, when I walked into the indoor portion, with a beverage I purchased from another business, me and my friends we were flown at by a worker and told that we "couldn't be in the store with outside beverages!" So we took a deck of cards and moved outside so we weren't offending the indoor costumers and were flown at once again being told that because we "weren't costumers we couldn't be there and to leave." This was completely rude and the waiter was totally presuming that we weren't going to buy anything, which I had been planning on buying a coffee and a brownie to share, and kicked us out in loud tones humiliating us in front of the other costumers! I've had past problems with this server's attitude but I will not be flown at to rudely! I had been a frequent customer for over 4 years as stated before but after this treatment I will be taking my business to the Starbucks across the street or coffee culture. I am incredibly disappointed in the staff they hire and sad that they don't want my business anymore!
