The Rig is still the best place in town for good ol' home cookin, unchanged after its relocation from the old decrepit spring garden truck stop to the newer building that formerly housed the huddle house. Anyone who doesn't think that Florida is part of the South should really stop by this place at about 7 AM on a weekday. This is one of the few places left where the regulars come by every day, sit down, and get their orders without even having to place them. The place is a DeLand staple, and if you're from around those parts, you're likely to see at least someone you recognize on any given visit. The food is exceptional. Their breakfast offerings are a great way to start the day: a double order of biscuits and gravy should be enough to fill just about anyone up. The trucker's special is a great combo, and their grits are indeed exceptional. The sweet tea is as good as it gets and is a requisite accompaniment to any meal. For lunch I would recommend getting the special, a typical offering would be two breaded and fried pork chops with rice, mashed potatoes and gravy (they will put brown gravy on literally anything), corn, yams, cornbread, and a slice of cake for dessert, all for around 7 bucks. Needless to say it's a good deal. The fried fish is also exceptional when they offer it. Their sandwiches are great, as is the fried chicken. The menu is about as comprehensive as diner offerings can get, although if you are like me, you are likely to find something you love and stick with it. On late weekend nights, the place becomes a riot as a drunken mix of high schoolers, twenty-something townies, and bargoers filters in around 2 A.M. Hilarity usually ensues, and the food is as good as ever. The Rig never fails to come through.

The hostesses and servers are on top of everything. The chef is awesome tho! My favorites are the Fried Chicken Livers with brown gravy and onions, the Fried Catfish, the Cornbread and the Biscuits and Gravy. I've never been a fan of Southern food until I came to this place. Whenever I've had a tough night, or a long night, I come to this place. I love that it's open 24 hours a day. It brings comfort to my heart and my mouth. I honestly recommend going to this place after midnight on a Sunday. The atmosphere is chill and laid back then. Plus, the cook out does himself at this time of night! I could tell he was passionate about his cooking. I'll always return to this place when I'm in Deland!

Well it's been awhile since we've been here. To be honest we haven't missed much. The place is still a dive serving up crap but at a ridiculous high price. I ordered the Western Omelet with Cheese and Home Frys why my wife ordered Biscuits and Gravy with 2 eggs. Both way, way over priced. My Omelet was greasy with a few chunks of fat instead of ham which did make it disgustingly chewy. Ok maybe I'm being to harsh. I'll be more positive.... The water was yummy!!! My wife seemed to enjoy her fried eggs as she slowly hacked away at them with her knife. Well you guessed it we won't be back. The owner can keep his run down greasy dump. My only wish is that the State will do a thorough inspection next time and force him to clean the place up.

Best breakfast I've had at a diner. Good service too. Very old fashioned inside but I found that appealing. Try the truckers breakfast. Massive amount of food and the biscuits and gravy were the best I've ever had.

I work right across the street.. I have to say this is the best place for a quick lunch or, a great southern style breakfast or dinner. The owner has a great presence here, their food is phenomenal and their staff is awesome! Please come support your local business! They are great

With all the construction on I-4 we are trying to avoid this route until it is all done. Well off the beaten path is this wonderful "Diner" that is now going to change the route in which we travel from Orlando to Daytona, St. Augustine or Jacksonville forever. This place is southern cooking at it's finest. We were there for a late lunch and both my wife and I decided on the meatloaf lunch special for just $9.95 and it was suggested by our server that it was enough food for us to spilt. We were also allowed 3 sides with our meatloaf. Both of us loved every bite of the Loaf, corn bread, navy beans, Mash potatoes and collard greens. They were even nice enough to spilt our meal on 2 plates so we didn't have to. Then the icing on the cake or strawberries, this meal came with angle food cake with strawberries and whip cream. Our total bill was just 14.95 with 2 Iced teas. Dropping a 20 for this meal was worth every penny.

I passed by this place many times and never paid much attention so I decided to stop in for lunch one day the place is definitely popular it was extremely busy. We found a seat and a extremely friendly server dropped by to take out drink order and looked a little overwhelmed so we told her we weren't in a big hurry and understood the food might come out a little slow. We both decided to order burgers to make it easy on the cook to our surprise the food came out really quick and was delicious beside being very reasonably priced. I definitely want to try their breakfast next time. There aren't a lot of places like this in the area that offer such a wide selection. I would recommend them if you like more of a home style diner.

Every time I come in to town we make it a point to stop by. Very small but comfortable eating environment. Great food and very friendly service.

Southern diner to the fullest. Traveled up to DeLand to head to the Sugar Mill but it was a Two and a half hour wait so I relied on trusty Yelp and bam, The Big Rig! It is a legit diner, you walk in and everyone looks at you because you don't know it's seat yourself and they just say to themselves "oh, newbies" because everyone else is a regular. You hear the chatter going around from staff to customers and it's like best friend comments, it's very warming. The daily specials are written on white boards with a sharpie, it's legit mom and pop run with a trucker stop feel. So, when you arrive, seat yourself, even if the table isn't cleared. Our server was darling, she took great care of us and it was super busy since a server had called out but that didn't stop her from taking great care of us. My mom got the Turkey platter special and I went with chicken and waffles with a side of shredded home fries. Let me tell you, some of the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. It came with four pieces, on the bone, true double dipped homemade fried chicken and it was delicious. The waffle was the size of a plate and together, with the chicken, magic was made. I literally licked my fingers after I was done, do delicious. Overall, don't expect super clean and fancy, this is a true diner and everything is served with love. Open 24 hours too, score!

My favorite breakfast place!! love love love it! I am allergic to eggs (dammit! wth!) but I always get the chicken fried steak with gravy and a biscuit. It's great! My husband loves the Big Rig, too, and our baby son picks off our plates. We love taking friends and family here, service is always fast and friendly :)

I have passed by this place for years and never thought about trying it out. I read the Yelp reviews and thought, what the heck. If you are looking for a huge, southern breakfast, then you should definitely check them out. They are also reasonably priced. The place is pretty busy, so you won't be in and out. If you are in the area, definitely stop by. They also serve lunch and dinner.

I ate here for lunch one day while staying with a friend in DeLand, and I gotta say, I was extremely pleased. It was more of a traditional old school kind of diner. A "greazy spoon" if you will. But there's nothing wrong with that! The service was great, and all the prices were extremely reasonable. I just had a burger, but it was a damn good one! I don't remember what everyone else got, but I know everyone was real pleased. Definitely will go back here when I'm back down in DeLand.

Happened to be in the area, so Hubby and I stopped in for late breakfast. It was pretty crowded when we walked in. There was no one at the counter and no "seat yourself" sign, so we were a little confused on what to do. Finally a waitress stopped by and let us know they were clearing off a couple tables. After a few minutes we were seated at a small table in the back. The place has that kitschy diner feel, but it is definitely old and a little on the grubby side. After reading other Yelp reviews, we knew we had to try the fried chicken and waffles. The menu described it as "for the BIG appetite" and our server confirmed you get a 1/2 chicken (1 leg, 1 breast, 1 thigh and 1 wing), so hubby and I decided to split it. Once it came out, it looked delish...perfectly golden and crispy. But once we cut in to the chicken we realized it was about 70% breading and 30% chicken. Honestly I don't think I've ever seen so little meat on a chicken. We even joked that maybe they accidentally gave us a Cornish hen instead of a chicken. I will say the waffle and the fried breading were very good, but the lack of actual chicken meat was pretty disappointing. We devoured all of it and both of us were still hungry. I noticed that half of the people dining at the time had ordered the biscuits and gravy, so I suggested that we split an order of that. Hubby happily agreed, and we waited for our server to come back so we could order it. I don't know if it was an off day or what, but service was extremely slow. She finally stopped by and took our biscuit order. I assumed it wouldn't take that long to come out since it's just biscuits topped with gravy that's probably already made. Plus our chicken and waffles came out pretty fast. But it took surprisingly long. A gentleman at the table next to us got his order, and apparently it was wrong. When the server said she would take it back and fix it, his reply was "Nope, I'll eat it...I've already waited this long, so I don't want to wait any more." If this would've happened earlier, we probably would've skipped ordering the biscuits. However, when they finally came out, they were quite yummy. Other times I've had biscuits and gravy, the gravy has been almost like wall paper paste. This gravy had a great rich and creamy texture. Probably the best biscuits and gravy I've had. Once finished eating, we waited...and waited...and waited for our server to come back. The pushed aside, empty plate must have sat at our table for 15 or 20 minutes. At this point I started to get pretty frustrated. I've been to other local diners that were even more packed than this place, yet service still managed to run smoothly. Finally she came by and we asked for the check. Another 5 minutes went by before we got our check. I struggled on whether to go with a 2 or 3 star rating on this one. The food was pretty good, but I can't get over the lack of meat on the chicken that was described as being for the "BIG" appetite. Plus the service alone was enough to not make me want to come back here. Sorry Big Rig.

Favorite diner in DeLand! Awesome food and better staff. They are open 24 hours, which could be a plus if you are out late nights.

Not the same character of the original 'Big Rig,' for those that have been around, but a solid 'greasy spoon.' Inexpensive and open 24 hours. It is essentially a 'Waffle House.' Always had friendly southern service and hot meals.

I'm a little confused as to whether this is Big Rig 2 or Big Rig II. One is on Spring Garden, one on 15A which is the same road but anyway, on to the review for one if these places! We found the place to be comfortably busy and sat at a dirty table upon our arrival. It was promptly cleaned off by a very friendly server who brought us menus and took a drinks order. We ordered one of the many specials written on a white board and it came to our table promptly with "grilled biscuits". The eggs were a little over done but if that's the worse thing that's ever happened at a restaurant I consider myself a lucky girl! The huge sausage patty was excellently spiced and the biscuit, pure perfection! The place was clean and they were well organized. I don't know why I haven't come here sooner but will definitely be back. Don't get me wrong, this is NOT a 5 star restaurant but in the realm of diners and dives it's earned all five!

It's like a mix between Waffle House and Cracker Barrel. Cheap and good. ...but in a small, local-diner atmosphere. I believe they're open 24/7. OH, and the portions are HUGE!!!

The best diner food in Florida. This place is on par with the great diners up north that I miss. The grits are well done, and the biscuits and gravy is worth the trip.

Wow - what a great surprise! The food was excellent and the menu extensive. While I went for breakfast and it was 10am, I ordered FRIED CHICKEN and WAFFLES! Could not resist. The food was cooked to order and perfect! My friend had liver and onions and pronounced it as excellent - especially homemade mashed potatoes. The ambiance is pure southern diner and I mean in a very good way. The space was bright and clean. The prices were good. The service was great and the food was excellent.

Well, we went to Big Rig 2 a few times before and it was OK. Our last visit was a disaster...we were waiting for our food for over 30 minutes, our cofee was reffiled only once as our waitress didn't even attempet to visit our table. She didn't give us straws and when asked she gave us 2 for 3 people. Our food was just another disappoinment. We ordered a biscuit but not with gravy on it,eggs were cold and a split pea soup was horrendous. It looked more like mashed potatoes,no liguid at all and it was so salty that we couldn't eat it. I don't know what happened to that place....maybe they were just too busy and their regular cook was sick. :-) We won't return.

Recently moved next door to it's old location, now called "Big Rig 2." All the same, this is just a fantastic little diner. The dim confines of the old truck stop have been replaced with the bright shininess of a former Huddle House, but the photos of the regulars are still on the wall, and the coffee mugs still say "Got Grits?" They do, in fact, have grits, always cooked to perfection. A side order of biscuits and gravy fills a dinner plate, and the Steakhash makes me want to go out and drive an 18-wheeler. In addition to great breakfast food, there are sandwiches and classic Southern cooking--24 hours a day. Not to be missed.

Man, you know how it is...you're up late, and you hear the rumbles below...time to venture out in search of grub! My husband and I were traveling this past weekend and stumbled on "The Big Rig." This must have been a Huddle House location previously as that is what our GPS found when searching for nearby restaurants...let me tell you, what a great surprise to find this hometown joint instead! The menu was great, the service was great (even at 2am!), and the food was awesome. :) If you are in the area, this is a must-try!!!
