Only the best ice cream and shakes in town! Not sure how long this place has been a Bradenton landmark, but it is definitely a staple to those in the area. Lots of choices of ice cream and fast-foods. Great spot to hit on the way back from the beach.

Ice cream and more. Love the malts. A bradenton historic landmark. Went here in high school and it's still the same. Worth stopping and getting a treat. Plenty of choices and variety to satisfy anyone. Old school ice cream shop worth seeing.

Manatee High flavorate for decades. Burgers taste like 1960's drive in. (that means good) Lots of ice cream selections and soft ice cream like that found at Dairy Queen.

I am writing this review not from a current trip but from years and years of visiting Shake Pit every Christmas while visiting Grandparents. I have not been to Shake Pit in over 7 years but I can say with zero doubt that it has the best banana splits I have ever had. Oh and their banana shakes are amazing, cherry shakes are amazing. Gosh, I love this place. BRB, going to find a flight from SLC to Florida. I need a banana split.

A Bradenton staple! Absolutely delicious. I always get their chocolate covered banana spooner...yum!

Big disappointment. Burger was mediocre, shake/malt had to be eaten with a spoon, fries were meh. Didn't live up to the hype if you ask me. Honestly, this place can't compare to Steak n' Shake.

I wanted a burger and it definitely satisfied my cravings. I ordered a cheeseburger with grilled onions and added bacon on it. It was a perfect size for me. If i didn't order fries then I would still leave the place hungry. Its a small joint where you order your food first and then sit down. They call your name when your food is ready. There's a good amount of tables there so it shouldn't be a problem finding a place to sit. Preferably, I still like Stuffed Belly better.

We love Shake Pit, and it is our staple for post beach icecream or shakes. I always get the soft serve (about 3 bucks or so), because it is so creamy and plentiful. Prices are a little high for dive food, but worth it. Cash only.

Everyone loves the Shake Pit. It is very difficult to just drive by on Manatee Avenue and not stop here whenever you see it, and if they are open. I love their dipped soft serve cones, covered in chewey wax topping. Their malts are also excellent. My Mother-in-law always loved the Pinapple Malt from here. My husband went on and on about how great their burgers are, but I had one and it was nothing that special. The food counter gets really crowded during lunchtime, so you may have to sit on the benches in the heat.

First let me say...i cannot believe anyone could possibly have anything bad to say about anything having to do with the Shake Pit...they have the best cheese burgers, cooked to perfection on a well seasoned grill....nomnomnom....fresh from the butcher shop to your nice toasted bun. The family has had nearly everything on the menu to eat-except the Oink N Hoof N Pecker, the chicken sandwich is ENORMOUS as is the pork tenderloin, the shrimp are great and the fries mmmmmmm, I like mine well done, a little extra crispy, and they are eager to accommodate. Kids LOVE LOVE LOVE the popcorn chicken and there is enough there for them to bring some home for a late night snack. Ok, on to the ice cream, now I have never had a shake there, but the Spooner's are so good and chock full of chunky goodness. I don't care for soft serve personally, but the hard scoop and such are super, nice creamy ice cream, not the cheap junk you get at DQ. Loaded with toppings and always a smile. Banana Splits are out of this world too! Then there are the owners...who dedicate countless hours, not to mention gallons and gallons of ice cream and other goodies to the Manatee High School Football team. They are one of the most dedicated business in this town, dedicated to all of us...the people who call Bradenton home! You can even send good wishes to someone on their marque!!! Open all week, except on Wednesdays!!!! Dont miss this one!!! CASH ONLY

If you are looking for the perfect malt around Tampa Bay, you should stop here. I've also tried the hamburgers and they are really good. Maybe missing a bit of salt and pepper.

Only 1 review for the Shake Pit!? Impossible. It's a Bradenton Landmark! Come for the shakes, malts, ice cream sundaes! Food is delish too! Seriously people, show some love!

I'm going to go back and try something different - think the shake I chose may have affected my experience. They have a great selection of choices - pretty much can get ice cream any way you want it. Consider it an option but not a 'must-do'

This is the best burger of its kind in the world. I've lived here my whole life and love the burgers and shakes at Shake Pit. Thanks so much for keeping it original!

  • Stephen W.

Just stopped for the shakes since the reviews were so good. Give me a break. A real shake starts with hand scooped ice cream not ice cream out of a soft serve machine. My 13 year old didn't even finish her chocolate shake. I will say the burgers looked really good,... but we only had the shakes.

Well, me living here all my life, going to Manatee High games (GO CANES!) and stopping by here after every game almost, it becomes a part of your hearrt. The burgers are good, they have tons of ice cream n stuff, so you cant get tired of the place too easily. Every high-schooler that works there isnt too rude, and you can meet everyone there. Too bad it loses out to Sweetberries in ice cream. Otherwise, its a great greasy spoon.

One good funny thing is I do not live close to this burger restaurant otherwise I would gain 200 pounds a year because of the shake. Their shake was pretty good and I like the sweetness and everything in it. On top of that the cashier on the day I went there was very nice. How could you skip the burger restaurant that has been in that spot and never moved for tens years? This is that one and the only one on that street that you will see the customers from junior up to senior citizen. Because they have ate there since they were in the school nearby I would guess.

CASH ONLY! I think that's Shake Pit's only downside for me, as I never have cash. Shakes are amazing, my favorite is the chocolate banana. They are pretty pricey but the ice cream is worth it.

By moonlight miles, my favorite grub-out spot in Bradenton. After the beach, who doesn't crave a righteous burger, side of crispy o-rings and a milkshake so thick spoons are the weapon of choice? With a throwback diner-esque sign prevalent from the road, Shake Pit's atmosphere brings back the Happy Days ambiance of yesteryear. As expected, the line was to the road, so we walked 'round back and sat at the counter. Not only did we get a chance to witness our food being made on the grill, but also the opportunity to converse with the line cook and what seemed to be a manager from our seats. The milkshakes were thick and creamy. The mocha packed a nice punch and the peanut butter was rich and forced your lips to pucker with each spoonful. The cheeseburger was cooked to order, topped with the works and served on a soft bun. The only word that comes to mind to describe the burger is classic. It's an old-fashioned burger with perfectly melted cheese. Mmmm. The onion rings were giant, crisp and full of flavor. It doesn't get much better than this. To me, five stars means the combination of excellent food served properly, a cool/fun atmosphere that invites you back, and friendly service. Shake Pit delivered on all of these fronts. I'm counting down the days until my return.

Awesome old fashioned hamburgers and shakes! When I am craving a cheeseburger and chocolate shake this is the place I go. Shake Pit has a nice casual, laid back atmosphere as well. It is easy to miss but it is so worth stopping in. My only complaint is they only take cash which can be inconvenient.

CASH Only ! The Shake Pit is 4+ stars. The food (the things I have had so far) is outstanding. GREAT burgers, Great shakes, Great ice cream. The burgers are thick and juicy, the shakes are super thick with lots of flavor and the ice cream is creamy. Need I say more ? ? The reason for it not being 5 stars ? A few minor issues. Being cash only in 2015 is flat out weird. The prices are somewhat on the High side so it can't be that they can't afford to eat the 3% credit card fees. They don't do a good job of listing all of the many things they offer (I just learned of a bunch of stuff from the other reviews). I guess I need to go inside to find out. I have to believe (as a business owner myself) that they are losing sales and profits by not accepting credit cards. Several times I have passed by and thought about getting something but realized I didn't have much cash and I don't want to go find an ATM just for the benefit of eating at this establishment. Having said that, it really is a nice "old fashioned" kind of burger, shake, ice cream joint. It reminds me of the roadside stops from my youth. The front window display of food offerings looks like it hasn't changed (other than the prices) in 20 years. While it is nostalgic, it too is costing them sales. If I knew all the things they offered, I might buy more or go there more often. Just my 2 cents. Also, please note, I believe they are closed on Wednesdays (I have no problem with this). It is a nice break for their employees.

They should rename it Garbage Pit. I worked there as a teen and loved this place for the food and nostalgia, but the current owners have allowed it to turn into a dump. You can no longer eat inside because it's full of wall to wall crap. It's like walking into an episode of hoarders. They really should be ashamed of themselves, it's appalling and a fire hazard. Thankfully the food is still good so I gave it 2 stars, but the trailer trash working there and that own the place should be fired.

  • Amy T.

The very, very best chocolate malt I've ever had. I haven't eaten the food - but there is SO much character here I'm definitely going to. It's a road side stand type of place that looks like it's been there for generations. Very groovy.

I LOVE burgers and this place is INCREDIBLE. It is nearly impossible to find a little hole in the wall 'burger joint' and the Shake Pit is definitely that. Its a teency little diner style restaurant with a few bar stools around a counter where you can watch them cook for you. My burger was RIDICULOUS good. SUPER hot, very juicy and came out in just a few minutes. Even better, I GOT TO WATCH THEM MAKE IT! The fries are awesome too. There are no fries better than crinkle fries especially when theyre really crispy. YUM! I imagine their shakes are out of this world but even this fat girl has a limit. Its cheap, quick, easy and damn delicious. I cant wait to go back to visit the grandparents and eat here again. Holla!

Nice pit stop for a treat. Can't go wrong with classic root beer float (: Have yet to dine here though.

Does not understand or care about food allergies. Unfortunately, after years of frequenting The Shake Pit, we will no longer be giving them our business. They have a rule of no outside food on the patio, with no exceptions. Even in the case of life-threatening food allergies. We brought in McD's for one child in our party of 5. My nephew is severely allergic to dairy and we know the ingredients of their burgers and fries are dairy free. However, when we arrived at Shake Pit we were told by the owner that we could not have outside food on the property. I said I'd be happy to purchase food for him there if she could tell me what on the menu is dairy free and has not been fried in the same oil as the mozzarella sticks. I also asked to see the ingredients of their hot dog buns, which she could not provide because they come from a bakery. She confirmed that even their hot dogs touch dairy bc they use the same griddle and fryer for all their foods. So there is NOTHING there that he could order and be safe. After that admission, she still did not make an exception for my nephew because, "if I make this exception, then everyone will be coming in with their picnic baskets from the beach". We even offered to show her his epipen to prove this was serious. She was more concerned about the scene we were making in front of the few customers that were there (even though her reason for not letting him eat there was limited seating) than about helping us figure out how to enjoy a family night out together. It's really sad. I know they've been in business for over 50 years, but food allergies are a recent epidemic and these places need to change with the times. We desperately want to support local business, but it seems the chains are much more accommodating when it comes to special needs.

I can't give this place any less than 5 stars simply because I've been obsessing over their malts and they've been on my mind since I first went over a year ago. I'm tempted to drive here for a malt every time I'm on the Skyway(north side). I had my 5 year old with me last weekend and our fishing trip was cut short by the rain, so it was the perfect excuse to drive over here. The malt(root beer flavor) was everything I dreamed about/remembered and more. Their malts are THE reason why I love here so much. There are soooo many flavors to choose from. I've had one "standard", which requires a spoon, but this one was "drinkable" since I was driving. My daughter had a strawberry shake that was super thick, which also required a spoon. I also gave in to an impulse buy and got the fried mushrooms. They only have one size, and it is big enough to share. They were good, but not remarkable. I had forgotten that they were CASH ONLY, so I got to walk in the rain to the CVS across the lot for cash. Don't be like me and forget or otherwise not bring cash. The staff and service were friendly enough. I will definitely be back, as I'm also curious to try their burgers and chili cheese fries.

Let me preface this by saying that it would be 5 stars if reviews were only about the food. My family got two small soft serve ice creams, one small sundae, and a chocolate milkshake. The ice cream is fantastic. It's homemade, smooth, and not too filling. The size portions are huge so unless you're sharing or have a huge appetite don't bother going larger than a medium! On to the negatives. When paying, one of my family members pulled out a card to which they were met with the response of "oh it's cash only." Well that's perfectly fine, but the issue is that it doesn't say it anywhere. I actually looked around for a sign stating that's what it was but I couldn't find one. The worst part was that when they went back to the car to get their cash the employees closed the two windows from which they serve and proceeded to laugh and give the not-so-friendly looks to my family members at the car. Granted, they're probably teenagers or early 20's, but that doesn't mean you have to act like we did something wrong. I could be overreacting here, but when you're dealing with other's food you have to be mindful of your body language at all times. Overall, I'd come back here for their ice cream but I wouldn't say it's the best around when taking in your surroundings.

This place was yummy. It was hoppin' on a Thursday night. Our only complaint was that we didn't get ice cream or shakes to go with our dinner. We'll be back!

I remember as a kid how this place always had the best burgers and milkshakes. I'm happy to say the tradition continues... The Shake Pit is still the best place in town for both their hamburgers and milkshakes :-)

  • Andy D.

BRING CASH!!!!!! This is a landmark in Bradenton and for good reason. They have an amazing selection of shakes, malts, ice cream, etc. Their milkshakes can't be eaten with a straw and are to die for. This is a very popular place so come with some patience as all orders are made fresh. You are missing out on some killer desserts if you don't come to Shake Pit!

The burgers were really good and the fries were too. It was very crowded but the wait wasn't too bad. Only thing that was disappointing was the price. I expected it to be cheaper but it was a bit on the expensive side for a burger and fries but it was a nice treat. I would love to try their ice cream sometime.

I've been remiss. I have lived her for a bit more than 10 years and I never have been to the shake pit. But on a grey and cold saturday with nothing better to do but hungry for a burger I ventured to the Shake pit. There is a little 8 seat indoor area and a walk up window. all The seats were full and two people waiting, so I went with the take out window even though it was maybe 45 degrees out. Just got a cheese burger and fries, pretty cheap, under $7 and didn't wait too long. Although the cold made it seem that way. I run off to my car to have lunch and it was wonderful. I don't know if it was my state of mind, the cold outside, or the wackiness of eating in my car but I loved this cheese burger, nice fresh bun, slightly toasted (on the flat top?), cheese melting nicely, and a juicy burger cooked just right. The only thing that would have made this perfect is they need a bit more salt/pepper on the burger but otherwise I loved it. I may even say it is a bit better than the hob nob. Mainly because the bun was nicer than hob nob's. Fries were good, but nothing outrageous. fairly crispy, crinkle cut. I did not try the shakes (it was freaking 40 degrees out!), but I'll be back. I'm just crying that I didn't try this local institution earlier.

Their shakes are the best ever! I love the strawberry malt. Anything malt here is good. The rootbeer float is good too. Their burgers are really really good. Juicy and hot. Its cheap and good. This is definitely a local local place to be. Been around for years. I've been coming here since high school!

One word... AWESOME! This place is the best ice cream in town. It's made fresh and it's from scratch. The serving size is perfect for what you pay for. But like others said, this place is a cash only place so make sure you bring cash.

This place has been around forever and as a former Manatee High School student it gets at least one star for intense nostalgia factor. It's tiny and classic place, every town should have a throwback burger and shake diner such as this. I admit that the burgers are so so... the real darling on the menu is the Chicken Cheese BLT. The crinkle cut fries are yummy...the secret? It's the same grease since 1975, and you can't go wrong with a shake. Cash only but it's worth it.

    (4)
  • Jeanna L.

The shakes were yummy! Really thick though... my little one ate hers w/a spoon. We tried chocolate, banana, & mint and all were good. The Oreo mix up (like a DQ blizzard) was good too. I would definitely go back. I'd probably try a malt next time. The inside counter looked really claustrophobic so we used the walk up window and took our shakes to go.

I'm updating my review because I went back to try the burger & fry & not only was it delicious but the same cashier seemed to be in a better mood. She was very friendly! Delicious ice cream, tasty burger, fresh fries = I'll be back again & again!
