A weekly treat of great pizza.

I can't remember the last time that I had to use a knife and fork to eat my pizza because it was so soggy that I couldn't pick it up. Well, that happened tonight when we ordered 3 different pies from Michaelangelos. Flavor was ok, but the floppy/greasy pizza and lack of sauce was disappointing. What does it take to find a good pizza around here?!

I have been extremely fortunate to live right down the road from here. Or maybe that's a bad thing... My poor arteries... Anyway, I first discovered this place when I moved down here and needed some grub during school. It's located in a little strip mall at the southeast corner of Lakewood ranch blvd and 70. The guys are straight from NYC. At first I was thinking it would just be another pizza joint, but I found out very soon that they have become my favorite pizza place. The restaurant is small, probably seats less than 30 without being too crowded. They have a display of their pizzas behind glass and the pizza oven is right there. There is a kitchen in the back as well. Their menu is actually quite extensive including sandwiches, appetizers, soups, salads, various pizzas, calzones, pasta entrees, meat entrees, etc. Aside from the pizza, which is thin crusted, crispy, and has a generous amount of toppings, I've had the Caesar salad, calamari, and a chicken parm, all of which were delicious. The servers are pretty good. I think they're mainly high school or college kids. The prices are quite reasonable. Less than $8 gets you 2 slices of awesomeness. I order the spinach and ricotta pizza a lot, but my fav is the New Yorker. Gotta represent right? Can't wait til they start delivering.

Beat pizza outside of NYC. these guys have it down to an art. Easy to pickup on your way home.or for a casual dine in. They have other things on the menu I think but I never make it passed the pizza. It's that good! They make their canolis in house and are a worthwhile addition if you saved room.

Great pizza and service we had Frankie as a server and he did a great job and kept us entertained! I had the Hawaiian pizza and white pizza they were both tasty and quick

*Classic* NY pizza. Sorta flimsy/greasy at the point. Really delicious. My dad declared we were having pepperoni and sausage. 1 pie, 8 slices. I think this combo was definitely a piece of the puzzle in terms of how fab it tasted. We'll probably get it again during our 1 week visit.

This is only for the chicken roll a staple in Long Island/NY. I have no idea what people have been eating regarding Michaelangelos pizza but the few times I have had it did not taste anything like NY Pizza tasted like cardboard and was incredibly small for the price they put it at. If you want good NY style pizza go a little further down 70 to Rico's.

We stopped here on our way back to Tampa from a road trip! This place is amazing!!! We tried a few different slices... The buffalo chicken, Sicilian and margarita pizza... All very different and all very good! I have always been disappointed with buffalo chicken pizza from other places- this place did everything right!! The buffalo pizza was perfect! Crispy chicken, great sauce, not soggy! And the Sicilian and Margarita were awesome too! We also ordered the Gorgonzola and Greek Salads- both hearty and delicious!! Everything we ordered was gourmet and prices were great! The server was adorable too! Too bad we live so far away :( I definitely recommend this place!

My husband and I travel a lot and have ordered pizza in over 40 states. We know a good pie when we get one and Michelangelo's Northern Margarita pizza is in the top two best we've eaten anywhere. We liked that several pies were prepared and waiting in the glass counter display. Made it easy to see/decide what to try by the slice. You pick what you want, they pop it back in the oven for a couple minutes and it comes out hot & crispy. We had both the Lasagna pizza and the Northern Margarita...both were excellent. The portion was generous, the ingredients appeared to be fresh and they didn't skimp on the toppings. We took a Cannoli home with us but were disappointed in the flavor -- will stick to the pizzas. Restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly and the prices were good. They don't serve wine or beer (but you can bring it with you, if you like).

Come here for unpretentious good food I love their chicken piccata with a side of pasta. Feeds me for two days and really yummy. Never overcooked chicken. Salads are simple no choice here you have to take what you get. The pizzas can be ordered whole to eat in or take out. But they have about 10 pizzas half cooked so when you order a slice or two they finish if in the pizza oven. Makes for fast service and hot slices. In a strip mall. No frills staff hustle to get everyone fed. Does lots of take out. Has cheap lunch specials too

Come here all the time and love it. The showcase always has an assortment of pizza...my favorites being the tomato pesto and buffalo chicken. My husband loves the white pizza and also the lasagna pizza when they have it. I am also obsessed with their chicken frainchese. Most of the time is it 5+ stars (every once and a while it is just ok). It is the perfect balance of lemony and buttery flavors, with perfectly cooked chicken. The chicken marsala is also a great choice. I really love it here so much!

We were disappointed in the pizza here. The crust was flavorless and not what we expected. We were hoping for a New York / New Jersey style pizza crust and that was not the case... very dry. We will likely not go back.

Wow! Best Italian food I've had in a very long time. Portions huge, food excellent, prices fair. They even stayed open a little late so our group of 5 could talk and laugh. Overall a meal worth driving a good distance for.

For a relatively small place they offer quite a broad menu and I was very impressed with their reasonable pricing. Aside from pizza they offer veal, seafood, chicken, salads and many types of pasta. There was a steady stream of customers picking up pizzas as I think this is what they are known for, however we opted to get dinner entrees. BTW they do offer pizza by the slice which is a novel (duh!) idea in Florida. I was in a pasta mood and had the Fettuccine Bolognese ($12.95) and it was huge and delicious. The ample covering of meat and tomato sauce was smooth and creamy, and made me very happy. My wife had the Eggplant Parmigiana ($12.95) which also filled the plate and was very satisfying. Eggplant was served with a pasta side. A large portion of each was brought home. Dinner came with surprisingly good warm rolls and a salad. The salad was to the small side but appropriate, however they only offer a house dressing which is a Balsamic vinegar based dressing. I like Balsamic vinegar so it worked for me and was tasty, but kind of surprised they don't offer other dressing for the Balsamic adverse. This is a good medium priced Italian restaurant masquerading as a pizza joint, with pleasant prompt service. Good simple real Italian food in Sarasota is difficult to find. I was impressed. I'll get back to you (maybe with an additional star) after I try the pizza.

best pizza in the area by far, everything else is horribly fake, I'm a New Yorker and I approve

They have the best catering food and best prices in town!.. Just had a party for 60 people. I ordered 10 1/2 trays. Full trays are too big to handle, move and set up in my opinion. It cost me $325 That is $5.41 per person! But more importantly the catering food is amazing. Every person at the party loved it and asked where I got it. I never eat there. But I have had them for catering 5 times. PS there is always a coupon in the local mailers. O and for this size order they delivered it on time for Free!

Seriously some of the best pizza I've had in the 17 years I've lived in sarasota. Do yourself a favor and go eat here. Great food, great prices, and great staff. Safe to say I found my new favorite spot.

If you want pizza in the Sarasota/Bradenton area - go here. I love this place. When I lived in SRQ I went here once a week. I love their pizza, the garlic knots are to die for, and the pasta e fagioli soup is the best I've ever had - very garlicky and delicious. They sell pizza by the slice if thats what you're looking for or you can get a whole pie. They also have a pretty decent menu of other food (italian). I prefer the pizza (or calzone or spinach roll!), but everything else is ok too from what I've seen/heard.

  • T G.

I haven't had the service mentioned by the previous reviewer, but that sounded beyond unpleasant. It's very low key, seating can be hard during peak hours, not a lot of atmosphere...it's pretty straightforward, but their pizza is AMAZING. The spicy chicken pizza is beyond amazing. They deliver to LWR, not much further, but are located in a good spot to pick up.

This is a damn fine slice of pizza. I was very happy with their pie. I bought one for my family, while on vacation, and we all loved it. We also got the spinach roll...man...it's good. This is the real deal NY Pizza in Lakewood Ranch. You folks are fortunate.

  • J S.

Excellent pizza, the best we've had in a long, long time. We've traveled all over the country and try every local pizza place we can when we can. A huge pizza for a decent price, and toppings balanced, crust cooked just right. We'll definitely return again and again....

  • Brett B.

Pizza is great but get it to go because the atmosphere is blah and the owners who work inside are arrogant which doesn't rub well with us in the south.

  • Susan D.

Chicken Picatta is SOOO good! BYO wine or beer though, so come prepared.

  • Ray m.

Everything here is pretty good. you choose your slice of pie from behind the glass. I use to come here quite a bit when I went to school here. the pizza pop was my favorite, it's a peperoni pizza rolled up. The tiramisu is awesome! Reasonable prices

    (4)
  • Andrew P.

This place went to crap. We haven't eaten here in about a year so we ordered takeout. The calzones are about 33% smaller than they used to be with fewer toppings/fillings. The mushrooms on of the calzones hadn't been rinsed because it tasted like dirt. The barbie doll behind the counter had the order mixed up, was rude and the prices are ridiculous for what you get.

  • Luke B.

This is for Lakewood Ranch location not University, but just as rude. Every time I am in their they give attitude like the customers are bothering them. They have terrible generic sodas but still call it Coke and the pizza is your standard flavorless New York Style pizza. We were there tonight. Ordered large Sicilian, which they forgot to put in oven after 20 minutes, when it finally came it was clearly burned and they argued that it is the style of the Sicilian pizza. Idiots. They cook another one. We finally got the pizza after an hour with no apologies and clear irritation. Idiots. Then we had a coupon for $5 off for orders over $25, bill came to $24.71 and they WOULD NOT take it. This after waiting an hour. Most places would give to your for free after all that. We have a couple friends who refuse to go there anymore because of attitude. Add us to that list and we will tell everyone the same. They need to take that crappy New York attitude back to NEW YORK. Doesn't fly in The Ranch.

There was a cockroach in my pepperoni pizza. NEVER AGAIN!

  • Lindsey B.

We have gotten pizza here several times. At first, we got their normal pizza and I hated it- thin, soggy, carboardy crust. We tried them again because they are so close to our house. This time we tried their Sicilian pizza and it was great. The crust is very thick and they also have a "Grandma's Sicilian" which is very thin crust and very little cheese, this was also good. My suggestion would be to try either of these and skip their normal pizza. Bottom line: if you live close, give them a try, if not, don't go out of your way to eat here.

After shopping at the Ellenton Outlets, we wanted pizza for a late lunch. Since we live 30 miles away, we depended on Yelp for a recommendation. Glad we did. The antipasto salad was yummy and huge! We ordered a basic pizza with our own toppings. The crust was thin, and the sauce was light...delish! Next time I'll try one of the pasta specials or the special pizzas :)

  • Rita S.

The food is really good here....my husband got a huge Stromboli, Garlic Knots, my son got a slice of cheese pizza, and I ordered Penne Ala Vodka ($13.95). Everyone got their food, but it took 15-20 minutes for mine to FINALLY arrive. Long enough that my husband and son were almost completely done with their meal. When it finally did come, I flat out asked for the dinner to be removed from our bill or a discount be applied. The waitress sent over the manager, and she said that since I was going to eat it, that they couldn't give me a discount on it. WHAT?!? We have young kids (4 & 1 1/2) so we only go out to dinner once a week. This ruined our one night "out". What a bummer. If anyone has kids this age, you can imagine what it's like for two impatient boys to wait for you begin to eat your meal while they have finished theirs. Plus the restaurant was freezing. But, the food is excellent.

As a recent transplant from New York, finding "real" pizza has been a challenge to put it mildly. This place was recommended to us by some fellow former Long Islanders and let me tell you, they were on point! I walked in, saw a chicken roll and almost started to tear. The pizza, dough, sauce were typical New York, in a very very good way! My mouth is in a very happy place right now thanks to Michelangelo's!

This is some good old school Long Island, New York style pizza. Hey I should know I lived in NY for 42 years.

    (5)
  • Joseph D.

I'm not sure what all these people are talking about. Want a REAL NY Pizzeria experience? This is it. Don't come here looking to be served by a head waiter, an assistant, and a bus boy. It is the real deal when it comes to NYC pizza. I'm confident when I say that you absolutely cannot get a better slice in this area. The staff are beyond cool and always make you feel at home. Always makes me feel like I'm back up north and is one of the main reasons I frequent Michaelangelo's Pizza often. It upsets me that these other reviews may discourage people from coming into this place, but I challenge everyone to give it a chance, and I promise that you won't be upset that you did.

If you are looking for great authentic Italian food...this is the place to go. My husband is an Italian from New York and he is impressed. This place draws huge crowds so be prepared to wait for a table or wait to pay for your takeout. I would really give this 3.5 stars but it was not an option. The staff can get very overwhelmed and might not be very friendly at times. My takeout food does also seem to be packed very sloppy. I had red sauce all over my car the last time I got takeout. Overall it is a great place and a little sauce in the car won't keep me from going back. Def recommend!!

Delicious!! We ordered the garlic bread with cheese, antipasto salad, pepperoni pizza, and the New Yorker pizza. It was amazing!! Everything came out fresh, hot, and tasty.

  • Patti K.

I love how you are able to watch the chefs make the pizza. The environment is happy and the restaurant is very clean. The workers are kind and you can tell they work very hard all day. Now let's get down to the point. As difficult as this is to say I did not think pizza was that great. I say it was a difficult thing to say because I really think that the employees are wonderful and I don't want to put them down in anyway. The pizza crusts are pretty thin, even when we ordered regular crust pizza. The sauce is a little soupy and there's not very much substance to the pizza at all. I didn't feel like there was anything spectacular to this pizza. I definitely think that in comparison to other pizza places this one isn't a favorite at all and in fact we probably won't go back... Unless it's to get Cannolis! Their Cannolis are amazing and if I could just rate those, I would give them five star rating. It seems like their prices were quite high for what we received. Unfortunately, pizza in the freezer section of the grocery store is as good if not better.

  • Lisa H.

The food is good and the wait staff is fine but, they need to hire more kitchen help. You will wait forever to get your food! We loved coming here once a week for Chicken Parmesan and then it started with the l o n g wait. The owner said its because the cooks are preparing takeout orders? This happened two times in a row. Get it together or you'll lose business.

Over a year past my wife and I went in and had dinner and the cook then was yelling at his teenage waiter. It was disgusting how he was treating the guy. We stayed away until just recently when we gave the place two shots. The first resulted in our not being fully happy but not enough to complain about. This recent trip resulted in a dinner with over cooked spaghetti and some God awful dish of Baked Ziti with peas. I am not sure if the sauce came out of a can or not but it tasted like it. In any event, we won't be back. Also, two bugs that shouldn't have been there were on the table and got onto my wife's plate. We told the waiter and he just basically ignored the situation. I look back now and realize that based on service and food we over tipped, but we won't be going back and so it doesn't matter. As it was I couldn't eat what they gave me because I didn't like the taste and my wife's was so over cooked it was nuts. Won't be back.

I've been dining here for 9 years now and the pizza has always been amazing. My personal favorite has always been the grandma Sicilian pizza with garlic knots. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with celiac disease and sadly had to stop visiting my favorite pizza place. They recently added a gluten free pizza crust to their menu and I couldn't be happier. The gluten free crust comes in its own tin pan to prevent cross contamination and any of the pizzas can be made gluten free. Today I ordered the grandma Sicilian on gluten free crust and I was very pleased. The 10 inch crust had a nice crunch and doughy-ness to it which is often lacking in gluten free crusts. I would definitely come back to order other gluten free pizzas....now if only they could add gluten free garlic knots :).

Don't waste your money on the Greek salad. Awful. Mostly lettuce, 4 thin cucumber slices, 2 olives and some grape tomatoes.

Yes five stars!! Amazing food and service deserves five stars!! Tonight we ordered the veggie pizza and a meatball parm hero. Both were fantastic. The veggie pie has so many veggies it's a full serving of veggies in two slices. The meatballs were soft and flavorful. As usual we will be back!!

A staple of ours, Michelangelo's has been around for some years now. They have traditional NY pizza and meals. Their consistent and the food is fresh, which is much more than I can say for the majority of the "out East" restaurants here in town. I love the traditional cheese pie along with their "white" pie. The Chicken Francese has always been great and their veal marsala is great also. My only qualm is that they don't deliver! A while back, they tried to open a delivery store and it seemed that it didn't fare to well as the quality was hit-n-miss and the delivery drivers were untimely. Go to Michelangelo Pizza! It is terrific and MUCH MUCH better than the chain pizzerias hands down. P.S. - They have a 2nd location in Parrish for all of you in the Ellenton/Parrish locale.

As a displaced New Yorker I am (like all the others) very critical of my pizza. I am so freakin glad this place is here! It is now the ONLY place I go for pizza now. All the people working there are from L.I. also so its nice to have conversations once in a while. They are expanding now because of the demand, especially with the nearby schools and the word getting out about the awesome pizza. I introduced a coworker from out if the area to Michaelangelo's and now when he is up this way its all he eats at lunch!

As a native NYer, I have been avoiding pizza since I moved to Florida for fear that a food so near and dear to my heart would be so poorly represented that it bordered on criminal. A few people I know have strongly recommended a couple of places so I have begun my sampling process- one slice of plain cheese pizza. Today was my first stop, Michelangelo's in the Summerfield Plaza at Lakewood Ranch. When I pulled up, it was packed with people eating and picking up their orders, and the very busy employees behind the counter had the crowd control totally under control. So far, pretty New Yorky indeed. The first bummer was that I couldn't just order a slice at the counter and then go sit down to eat it. No, this is to-go or table service only. Womp womp. Well, ok. I decided to sit and order my one plain slice and a glass of water. It took much longer than I would have guessed- but I wrote it off to the crowded tables and the fact that I was only going to be paying a comparatively measly amount of money. I noticed that a lot of patrons had brought their own wine and glasses, and overheard the waitress explaining that the proximity of the restaurant to the daycare center behind it was the reason that they were not allowed to serve their own. The food on the tables around me all looked and smelled great, and it seemed that lots of people go there for meals other than pizza. I saw a few bowls of pasta, some different parmesans, some salads etc, that all looked good. When my pizza finally arrived, It looked pretty darn good. Melty cheese, not too greasy, and piping hot. I had my first bite. Hmmm. Everything seemed to be on point...The crust was good- crisp and a little chewy, the cheese was good, melty and stringy, the sauce was good- fresh and tomatoey. But something was missing. Hmm. What is it? Oh! It's FLAVOR. Ya. Not so much. I really couldn't figure out why, but I ended up sprinkling on tons of oregano, garlic, and even salt- something I NEVER do, just to get it to taste like something. Sigh. This ain't NY. I was also really not thrilled that I had to leave a tip for one slice. I ended up spending about $3 instead of $2 and change. I would STRONGLY prefer being able to order at the counter like at most places. Despite my less-than-awesome review of the pizza, I think I probably WILL go back. Next time, I plan to add a bunch of toppings on to the fairly decent platform in hopes of making it taste more like something. Anything. Until then, my quest for a good, straight-up, cheese slice continues.

If you need catering this place has tasty food at an affordable price! I had a party of 14 and spent $150 on three pizzas and three half trays which was enough food for 20! Everyone enjoyed the food especially the wings! They have great pizza, although I'd prefer it a little crispier but that's a personal preference. I will be back for dinner even when I don't do catering, for a pizza place in Florida it's pretty good. The guys working behind the counter aren't real nice or anything but you have to understand their line was out the door so they were too busy to be nice so ill let that slide this time :)

We have been here for nearly a year and this is our second favorite place for pizza (Oma's is #1). The pizza is good with "grandmas" being the best I have had there. Our kids love the cheese pizza. The pasta is pretty good as well.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
