Great food and service, I just think the atmosphere is a little dark.

There are positives and definite negatives. The salad and soup option with every meal is a for sure a positive. The service however was a glaring negative and the overall cleanliness of the restaurant wasn't any help. The food isn't anything that would bring you back asking for more. Keep driving and spend your money elsewhere.

I want to like Mike's, I really do. This is the kind of local institution that should be a "must stop" hidden gem, but it's just not very good. We eat here every time we are in Bartow to visit family, and have never had anything better than an average experience. Service: average to below average. Staff is not really friendly. No smiling or engagement when taking your order and actually some eye rolling during the visit (at all tables, not just ours). Often bring the wrong sides at breakfast, although they have always brought out the correct side when asked. For a table of 6, waitress brought 4 creamers and a plate with 4 jelly packets... Food: at breakfast this is average, but honestly this is the kind of place breakfast should be amazing. Biscuits, eggs are dry. Home fries not well prepared, not crispy at all. Coffee is tasteless. Lunch and dinner are terrible. There is no healthy option on the menu. Like not one. For real. And if you are a vegetarian you can forget it. House salad or overcooked side veggies. Atmosphere: just gross. Dark with low ceilings. Not particularly clean. Bathroom did not have soap. Menu was sticky. Review started at 2 stars but now that I am reading this I am not sure why. Downgrading it to one star and suggest you head to Broadway Diner instead.

I have to agree with other reviews about Mike's, the staff can be friendly depending on who you get. The food is average but it is an excellent salad bar. The decor is awful and the owner needs to invest in some upgrades and it wouldn't hurt to dust and polish the place occasionally. Prices are too high for the fare but it manages to attract a good lunch time crowd most days.

One of the worst experiences of service and food I have experienced. We were the only people there and the waiting crew and cooks were playing around throwing ice and coins around as we tried to eat. The. Food was nasty and cold, the salad bar filled with wilty lettuce. Definitely not as good experience, won't be returning here again.

Great service. Salad bar was great along with soup and bread. No need to purchase an appetizer. Would go there just for some salad and soup. My wife had the steak tips and they were cooked perfectly and the onions and mushrooms were great. I had the Shore Platter and felt it was overpriced for the $17. All the seafood tasted the same and the breading was not crisp and crunchy but wet and moist. We will go back and next time I will get steak.

Okay...how do I do this, exactly? Let me think. Let's start from the beginning... LOVE the chef statue by the cashier stand and the various other chef related items. Hmmm...didn't look too awful dirty; so we were happy about that. The server was great! Nice lady and attentive. The salad bar needs to be blown up and a fake palm tree put there...or a dog run or something. The soup was very good...according to my companion. To me, it was okay but I can make better. So we ordered steaks. Mine was not old. It was cooked nicely as well. To say "a bit tasteless" would be a huge disservice to the word "tasteless"...but it was edible, in the end...after dumping salt on it. I like pepper too but not the cheap stuff; so I stuck with salt (the cheap stuff). Now on to my companion's steak.. Ever seen a freshly grilled mid-rare steak that was the same color of pastel pink all the way through and lacked any natural juice whatsoever? According to the manager (or owner) that's because, like me, you don't know your cuts of sirloin. Apparently, the pastel pink, juiceless sirloin comes from the very best and most amazing place in the cow where sirloins come from. Silly me! I always thought that pastel pink, juiceless sirloins came from sitting at room temperature after being cooked several hours before. But no: I was wrong. So wrong, in fact, that the manager (or owner) told the table next to us that I was wrong too. In fact, he mocked me after I had told him that I train cooks in some of the most visited and popular upscale restaurants in the world. (Which is true, btw). Alas, I had to go with my gut and say, "Whatever, she's not eating this." Because, you know, friends don't let friends get botulism. Anyway, the manager did see to it that my companion was given a much lower quality cut of steak as a replacement: you know the kind that is red (as a mid-rare) and juicy. Here's a hint for anyone who wishes to go into the beef aging business: age it before you cook it. So here's the bad news: there's a window, on the side of the building, and I looked through it on our way to the car. Unfortunately, what I saw was the kitchen. Don't EVEN ask...

Well this was the 2nd time for breakfast and my food came cold again. I won't be back. I've had the lunch buffet and I'm not impressed I've had much better.

The waitress greeted me promptly and was very friendly. Mike's is locally owned and I like that. The dinners come with a salad bar and one side. Specials can range from grouper fingers to eggplant parmigiana. The salad bar features an iceberg lettuce mix and has boiled eggs, cole slaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, beets, white onions, sprouts and dressings, artificial bacon bits and croutons. They also have bakery breads and real butter. If you like butter on your baked potato grab it here because they serve greasy yellow spread for butter with the potato. They also had a chicken noodle soup on the bar tonight that needed salt and pepper. Tonight I ordered the steak tips with onions and mushrooms. They came out on a sizzling platter so order less done than usual because they continue to cook. The meat was good. I think the mushrooms and onions would have benefitted by a splash of Worcestershire sauce. The onions were nicely sweet and carmelized. Most of the foods on the salad bar need more seasoning- simple salt and pepper in the potato salad would be good. I got a free rice pudding that was tasty but would have been better served warm instead of from the refrigerator. They have good looking lunch specials that I'll try while I'm here. I am giving this an extra star for being local and having clean restrooms!

My original rating was 4 stars. Had great experiences for breakfast, lunch, supper. Breakfast specials might include a 7 oz steak/ 2 eggs ($7) or kielbasa/ 2 eggs ($5) or ham/ eggs ($4) with all the trimmings (potatoes or grits, toast or biscuit). They make a perfect "sunny side egg" but also poach, etc. Juices $2. Breakfast til 10:30. Lunch/Supper: Nice salad bar, loaded with extras like Greek, potato, macaroni salads. Always have one soup (great potato, lentil, chili) and several breads. Can be crowded. My favorite is Mike's 10 oz sirloin, $9.49 (includes salad bar, hot veg, potato). Their spaghetti is good too. Always have a board full of specials. "diner style" place.... booths....sometimes service is efficient, sometimes slow. Rice pudding & key lime pie always available. Good value for the dollar. Popular place. Food consistently good. (Reuben is mediocre.) Some concerns--for gross ceiling tiles (mold) dusty chandeliers and blinds, and booth divider plexiglass smudgy. I dropped it to 2-stars after a 6/14/11 experience that left me in the bathroom for 2 hours. Not sure if it was "old stuff on the salad bar" that sat out all day or the grouper (which tasted fine) or everything slathered in butter? Combined with grumpy owner and unfriendly invisible waitress, and no specials--all dinners $11 or higher, my esteem changed significantly with one visit.

First time @ Mike's Grill tonight. Was not impressed. For 3 people was $36.00 plus tip. I had the fried chicken, The pieces were VERY SMALL & over cooked to the point there wasn't even much meat on the bones. Esecially the wing and the chicken leg as they were dry & meatless!. My husband had the chopped sirloin. Nothing impressive that we couldn't fix @ home. Our daughter had Mike's Sirloin. Nice size steak but not very juicy or tender. Certainly didn't melt in your mouth like one from Texas Road House or fill in the blank. We weren't impressed with the food. Tasted like something we made from home. It didn't tast like restaurant food. The salad bar has no frills. Very scaled down from a Ruby Tuesday salad bar. The ranch dressing along with the rest of the food was very bland and not much taste at all. For $36 I will eat at Olive Garden, Abuelos, Sonny's, etc before I would go to Mike's. Get better quality/quantity for the same price. Definitely wont' be back.
