There are quite a few mexixan places in apopka. This by far is the lest edable. I have been here a few times. The buffet well taste like reheated left overs that was not very good in the first place. The tortillas always tast overcooked or not fresh. The rice taste overcooked and old. There are a few dishes that are decent for the price. However this is the only Mexican restarn restaurant I have eaten at in central Florida that is batting 100% for upsetting my stomach. This is one of only three resuarant around apopka I will never go to when friends invite me out and I eatout 90% of the time. There are just to many other decent to good Mexican restaurants to bother going here.

I visted the place on a saturday around 11am for the lunch buffet. The buffets ( main one and the salad/dessert one) were fully stocked , lots of choices but no shrimp. The lunch buffet is $7.99 and ice tea and sodas $1.99. Chips and salsa are complimentary. Everything that I tried was very fresh and tasty. The enchiladas were very yummy. My daughter really enjoyed the chicken wings and cheese quesadillas. Overall everything was good including the service and the price can't be beat. Yes, we will be back again.

Food was OK, not great, had better Mexican food before but not at this place. Inside needs huge remodeling, very dark. Bathroom area terrible, smelly and dirty

First off, a previous poster, Danya L., made an incredibly offensive comment about gringos - that they're stupid and know nothing about Mexican food. That person should be banned from yelp as a racist pig. Secondly, I've seen people from all races at El Potro enjoying their lunches. The food is hot, you get good value for your money and most important, El Potro passed its health inspection with flying colors. The servers are friendly, on select nights they have a mariachi band, and they offer a lunch buffet which allows you to build everything from taco salad to tacos to enchiladas and so forth.

Mexican food purists stay away!!! I dont know how this place got so many 4 star reviews (probably gringos) but it was nasty. I was visiting from miami and decided to stop in for lunch because my sis lives 2 minutes away and the reviews were good. I am a " taco al pastor" addict so i asked about those. I asked if i could have extra pineapple on mine... and my waiter told me they dont make T.A.P with pineapple. Wait... What? Hold up. How is that possible?? I chalked it up to a regional difference in the way those particular tacos are made... but I should have bolted then. I settled on the buffet because a) no TAP with pineapple B) i was starving. The buffet was a travesty. Selections were underwhelming, limited, random (sauteed mushrooms, why??) and not very appetizing. It didnt look well attended to, either. They had a sad crappy looking salad bar(?) which they should completely scrap and replace with some effing Mexican food. I asked about diferent salsa options because I saw nothing at the buffet to dress my taco with. No chopped onions, no cilantro, not even pico de Gallo, no pickled peppers ...i was told that the salsa that came with my tortilla chips was my salsa option. Sorry, but Im not goung to use the salsa on my taco that the whole table is sharing and double dipping their chips with. In fairness, my waiter offered a hotter red sauce from the kitchen which i declined. But honestly, How are you going to have a Mexican buffet with out salsas on the buffet???? Or cilantro? What the hell? I wouldnt call this place authentic Mexican. Not even tex-mex. I got a nice buzz off of the two margaritas I had while I was there, hence my two star rating. And the waiter was nice.

This place is a down home, comfy, authentic Mexican restaurant in Apopka. As soon as you walk in, the genuine atmosphere welcomes you. There was a dinner buffet for the stupendous price of 10.99, and it had shrimp, beef, chicken and fish, along with mushrooms in a wonderful tasty sauce. We did not order from the menu, but others who did got really huge portions. I tried a little of everything, and I liked it all. This is a definite YES in my book. I even liked it MUCH better than Garibaldi of Apopka. To top it all off, there was a great Mariachi band who came to the tables and asked guests what they want to hear, and played with gusto and class, not cheese. The woman band member impressed with her violin playing. It was quick. tasty, and fun.

One of the best kept secrets in the Orlando area. We love El Potro for Saturday lunch, but it would be a great choice anytime. Saturday lunches are amazing, generous, authentic, home-made and with amazing low prices. A full meal for lunch on Saturday is only $4.39. We are now regulars! Try it, I know you'll love it like we do!

Since I'm trying to OD on salsa, I feel like it's my duty to sample all of them. This one was fantastic. So fresh and delish. Just the right amount of heat for this Texas gal. I had the carnitas - and no joke, prolly the best ones I've ever had. You could practically taste the time it took to cook - so flavorful. Ta-sty.

I really liked this place. It's authentic, they have a buffet, and the staff is very welcoming. Although the buffet looked delicious, I opted for queso dip and chips to start followed by tacos al pastor. Both were very, very good. The queso wasn't too thick or thin and had just the right flavor. The tacos, though! Man, those tacos were so good. The pork was seasoned just right and was topped with cilantro and onions. I almost asked for hot sauce but didn't need it after the first bite. I'm told they sometimes have a live band that will visit your table, but they were not present when I visited. Would have been neat to see that, maybe next time! If you're in the Apopka area, check this gem out!

After living in South Texas for 13 years, I need my Mexican food to taste a certain way! I can always tell if it is going to be good by the rice! The rice is authentic and great tasting. The lunch buffet here fits the bill- it is a great price and has lots of variety. The quality and flavors of the food are great. Great music inside- maybe a bit dark, but I happen to like that.

I've been going to this restaurant since I was younger and have always loved it for it's buffet style and of course authentic Mexican flavors. Today (8/24/14) my family and I went for the buffet and had a bad experience. We arrived at eight and told our waitress we would like to do the buffet. She looked annoyed and said she would ask if we could still do that since they closed at 9. When we got the okay we started to get food. And she would come every other minute to ask if we were done with the buffet yet because they wanted to close it down. This really bothered me. I understand what time they close and I get wanting to close down as much as possible so you can get out on a decent time. I work at a restaurant so I completely get how bothersome it can be when guest come in so close to close. But that does not mean you treat them the way she treated us. She and the manager both came over to rush us to eat and get out. We left within 20 minutes because it was so uncomfortable trying to eat when you are being nagged to hurry up. Over all I am disappointed in the way we were treated and will be visiting other locations instead of this one.

Are you a MexiCAN or a MexiCANT? This place is MexiCAN all the way!! The staff was warm and friendly even though it was close to closing time; they still offered us a table with a smile. We ordered quickly while munching on the fresh chips and salsa, and our meals came out in a flash. At the end of the night you would think the rice would be stale and you'd be getting the bottom of the pot for everything, but the food was just as good as the service! I had a stuffed quesadilla with rice and beans and others ordered tacos and a vegetarian burrito. All the food was flavorful and piping hot. I can't wait to try their sister restaurant in Winter Park, hopefully they're just as good! Oh and I forgot to mention their horchata, a cinnamon infused drink that never fails to delight. They'll even give you some extra to goo!

We go here all the time. Usually their fajitas are good, but this last time the chicken was sour. I told the lady that took my receipt and she told me I was wrong! She was in denial! I think I just need to take a break from this place for a while.

We went on friday night to find a Mariachi band playing all sorts of cool songs from Lady Gaga to Charlie Daniels. We were all amazed at the talent. The staff was friendly and the food was great. We will be going back next week for the food and entertainment.

I'm a frequent customer. Nice buffett and extensive menu. I like the Enchalads Rancheros. Service is always good. Basic decor (it is a former BBQ place). Can't beat the prices. I stay away from Friday nights as they have a strolling mariachi band that plays very loud music.

Don't let the looks fool ya... doesn't look like much from the road or when you get inside, but if you are looking to fill up on Mexican it's my number one favorite Mexican buffet. Good basic comfort food.

We are fans of El Potro. Funny but true ~ get the Chilequiles Verdes if you're adventurous or just try the Fajitas to start. You will be happy happy happy either way. They bring chips and two salsas to the table for munchies and if you order the margarita that's as big as your head, take a picture for laughs!

This is one of many Mexican restaurants in Apopka and even though the food is not excellent it is still good and like some people tasted the place is cheap and has no decorations or anything fancy but it's just a nice place to enjoy some cheap Mexican food.

Not going to win any awards for decor but the place is cheap and the food is good. They serve a buffet on Friday and Saturday nights that draws a decent crowd. A sign of a good Mexican restaurant are Mexicans and there are many who visit this El Potro. The place is a little dusty and the seats are hard wooden benches but after a few margaritas and a full belly you hardly notice!

Been here many times before and the food is decent, I'm not gonna lie... But tonight, I bought a chimichanga and the menu said one thing and they charged me more. When I asked why, they said,"the price went up". Well.... Not on your menu so that should be your problem. Was it? No. They made me pay the more expensive price. What??? Can you say bait and switch! The manager was useless. Never again, will just go to another one of the great Mexican places around.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
