I just started working in Newark, DE and The Chicken House was recommended to me by a coworker. I really enjoyed it! It was my first time eating Peruvian food so I went with a safe bet and order the 1/4 chicken with rice lunch special. It also came with a small side salad and soft drink. The 1/4 chicken was just the right size for me! The entire dish was very flavorful. I also loved the spicy sauce they had on the side. I poured it over the rice and chicken. So good but not too spicy!! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. I can't wait to go back!

The chicken house was very tasty, juicy and flavorful. The sausage that was in my meal was excellently spiced and was not dried out. The potatoes were okay, but a little dry (a problem that was easily solved with the yellow sauce). The fried plantains were terrific, sweet and sticky and warm. Use the yellow sauce, use it on everything, get extra even. It's great, creamy with just a little bit of heat. The green dressing used for the simple salad was also very good, the salad itself was just a head of lettuce with tomato. Ceviche was a little limey for my taste, but had a lot of good seafood in it. Service was friendly.

I love Peruvian chicken! I only gave 3 stars because: The chicken was not flavorful at all. That is the primary reason I visit any Peruvian restaurant. The plantains were very good - they are really really hard to mess up. The rice was A-Okay. The yucca was well over cooked and were hard and dry. The ceviche was pretty good.

The best chicken around. The preparation is unique and it really makes it. Everything from the salad to the chicken/rice to the sides were amazing. Awesome selection of south american beers. The aji sauce is out of this world. Do not pass this place up

Never too much of a good thing: I always have their pollo a la brasa con arroz amarillo y ensalada. The yellow sauce is the main reason why I go; it makes everything taste even more flavorful. I've had Papa A La Huancaina which is good. The maracuya is perfect with just the right amount of sweetness and natural flavor. This is my go-to spot to eat well and affordable. My only complaint is dessert because it's not fresh-made; they just pull it out of a small fridge for you. I would walk over to Ole Tapas instead for that.

I stopped by the Chicken House last night with my brother. Because it was Mon., my first choice Peruvian chicken place further up Kirkwood Highway was closed, so I decided to give CH a try. My mom had gone out with a friend to Ruby Tuesday, and I didn't feel like cooking or foraging, so I suggested it, and my brother was game. It's a good thing that he's a more adventurous eater than my mom, or else it'd be difficult for me to find someone with whom to share an ethnic meal when I'm visiting the 'rents! We did take-out, and ordered the meal that came with a whole rotisserie chicken (a la brasa) and fries ($16.95). I asked if this meal also came with a salad, as I'd read on a menu online, and they said that it didn't, but my brother wanted fries, so I ordered it anyway. They asked if I wanted the chicken cut into four or eight pieces, and I specified eight. Additionally, I asked if they made their chicha morada (Peruvian purple corn drink) fresh, as opposed to being from a bottle or can, since I'd noticed that this was how it was served at a Peruvian chicken place in Pittsburgh. They affirmed that they make it on site, so I ordered a cup ($2.95). They said that our order would be ready in about 15 min., so by the time that we made it over there, it was ready for pick up. The highlight of the meal was definitely the chicken, which was juicy and had the delicious seasoning I've come to expect from Peruvian pollo a la brasa. I thought it was on par with the Peruvian chicken place I've been to in Pittsburgh in these respects, and my brother, who'd never had Peruvian chicken before, enjoyed it very much too, devouring his half ravenously. I also greatly enjoyed the sauces that came with it, though I preferred the green sauce to the yellow sauce. Unlike the Peruvian chicken place in Pittsburgh, they must include mayo in their green sauce, since it was lighter green and had a creamier consistency than the green sauce I've had there, and it wasn't as spicy. The yellow sauce had more of a spicy kick, and was also quite creamy, but I didn't find the flavor as appealing as the green sauce. While the chicken was solid four star quality, several factors edge my rating down to a 3.5 (rounded down to 3, as is my custom). First, the chicken was cut into four pieces, rather than the eight specified. Second, the fries were clearly of the frozen steak type, and became soggy in the styrofoam container that they came in by the time we reached home. (Also, I hate styrofoam take-out containers b/c they're so bad for the environment!) Third, the salad that was included with our meal (despite that the person I spoke with over the phone said that no salad was included) had iceberg lettuce (my least favorite kind) and colorless hothouse tomatoes. Fourth, I suspect that while my chicha morada drink didn't come from a bottle or can, it was made from a mix, based on the flavor, which, as my brother commented, was reminiscent of Hawaiian Punch. I was hoping for more of the complex flavors and spices to emerge. Despite these reservations, I'd suggest trying the chicken at CH, esp. if the competition down the street is closed, as it was in our case. Just stick to what they do best, and you won't be disappointed! 3.5 stars.

Despite the Peruvian restaurant down the street, peruchos getting a better review this place is far better and way more authentic. My favorite dish is the pork chops served with rice and fried eggs. The pork is always cooked just right and the fried eggs over rice is perfect. You can never go wrong with the chicken its always juicy and marinated just right and is relatively cheap for a whole chicken. They also make a spicy yellow sauce that goes great with any meat they serve. If are stuck on a drink get and have never tried Inca cola I highly recommend it since your not going to find it in many places. Place is great for take out just buy a whole chicken for $10 and you have a family dinner that nobody will be disappointed with.

I came here with a few coworkers who wouldn't stop raving about the chicken and infamous "green sauce". Unfortunately, I was very underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, the chicken was solid and the price was very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Still one of the better options if you're in the area.

THE BOMB. Chicken House is life changing. The price is awesome and the food is very delicious. The chicken was nicely seasoned

The boyfriend always finds a reason to go back to Delaware for Chicken House. Needless to say, we have been here a couple times since our first experience and the meals have been consistent so far... except once. Well, my new favorite is the Lomo Saltado, $9.75. The first time I got it, I dreamt of it up until the second time I ordered it. Unfortunately, the second time was unbelievably, terribly, and disgustingly salty. Not sure if my taste buds that day were joking with me or what, but I didn't finish it. My boyfriend had a bite and didn't think it was that salty, so I'm not sure what happened. Third time I got it, I made sure to tell our waitress that I didn't want it too salty... and it was the perfect amount of saltiness. Think beef slices, french fries, onions, tomatoes, and rice -- oh my! Great portion, too. I would normally get the Pechuga a lo Pobre, but it can be too much for me. Boyfriend and his sister loooove that dish. Speaking of Pechuga a lo Pobre, I noticed that the sister's portion was a bit dry recently. The first few times we ordered it, it was incredibly moist and juicy. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are definitely off-days here (or different cooks in the back), so don't let one bad experience keep you from going back... unless it's an extreme case, of course. Anyway, make sure you look at the white board once you walk in the door for any specials. My boyfriend tried one of the special beef stew dishes and it was delicious. Love this place!

Absolutely amazing melt in yo mouth chicken!!!! Best in town but... the yellow sauce is like crack !!!! I would buy the recipe! I'm skeeting! !

There is rotisserie chicken, and then there is chicken so good you find your inner carnivore awakened - digging into the bird like you've never experienced. Add two unique dips, savory yellow rice, plantains?! And you have hands down the best family restaurant in the Newark, De area. We can't get enough. The owner is a total sweetheart to boot, and always checks in. It's been 100% consistent with over 10 visits.

I love their food. Simple and plain lol. I have been eating here since they first opened. Their food was soo yummy that they have opened two locations. It makes me happy that they are doing so well. When I dine here I love to get their chicken with yellow rice and fries. The chicken is always tender and juicy. It is seasoned correctly and never disappoints. The fries are regular French fries but always hot and fresh. The rice is flavorful and cooked to perfection. I've gotten other meals on the menu. All very yummy. I love the papa ala guancaina which is potatoes with a mild spicy sauce. Their salchi papa is simple yet yummy. It's fries and hotdog but great for the kids or as an appetizer. Their soda Inca Cola is also great. I have to say I've never had a bad experience. The staff is always super friendly and actually seem happy to see you. The locations are both good. One is bigger than the other. But still both produce such yummy foods!!! I obviously recommend lol.

SERIOUSLY TASTY CHICKEN. The foods: 3 of us split an appetizer of Yuca a la Huancaina which was a delightful plate of crispy yucca fries smothered in a pepper, cheese sauce reminiscent of cheese-wiz. Basically, we were licking the plate once the yucas were devoured. I ordered 1/4 chicken with maduros (sweet sautéed bananas). I had never tasted peruvian "pollo a la brasa' before Chicken House...but what I had I liked, no actually loved. Imagine the juiciest chicken practically falling off the bones rubbed in spices, that absolutely melts in your mouth. I demolished my quarter and was painfully resisting the primal urges to suck the last bit of flavor from the bones. The maduros were a recommendation of the waitress...and they were winners. Sweet bananas sautéed to get a little crisp on the edges and melty in the middle. Insanely fatty, insanely delicious. Normally I wouldn't comment on a side salad, but the green dressing served with the side salad is seriously delicious. It tastes like cilantro and mayonnaise which makes an innocent bowl of iceberg lettuce taste like a guilty pleasure. The best part is, after splitting the Yuca appetizer 3 ways, my meal miraculously ended up costing only $12. Come for the casual seat-yourself-atmosphere. The walls may be laden with tacky tourist trinkets from Peru but the soul they bake into that chicken is 100% authentic. *****Paleo status: easy to navigate with a menu full of chicken, plantains and salads.

Very good- but not nearly as good as Peruchos which is less than 2 miles further down Kirkwood Highway. I got the full chicken and plantains (which were described as salty / savory- but were generally tasteless- closer to yucca cakes). The chicken was great, but not near as juicy as the aforementioned competition. I will say- the prices are less, and its still phenomenal compared to all the rest of the cookie cutter chicken options- thats why I gave 4 stars rather than 3. But if you're really in the mood for Peruvian Charbroiled chicken- there's a better option just down the road.

This review is long overdue. I worked close by this restaurant and ate there every week for two years. The food is delicious and easy on the wallet. I recommend the Lomo Saltado, Jalea, and half chicken meal with rice. Extra Aji sauce is recommended also, I don't know what they put in it but it adds incredible flavor to any dish they serve it with.

  • Xin L.

Tried out a few dishes. The chicken was REALLY tasty!!!!!! Also had the Jalea, which was a fried seafood mix, was OK. Tried the chicken soup with rice, and we were surprised to find that it was green! A little bit weird tasting, but you could get used to it. The Pisco Sour was really great as well.

Best Rotiserrie Chicken in the town..,with fast service and affordable. The Aji (yellow) sauce is great for the Chicken. The seating(back-rest) is the only issue I have there..slightly wobbly and if a person behind you moves, you feel it too. But otherwise, I highly recommend this restaurant..,one of my favorites for Chicken.

Friendly service, great ambiance and the best chicken I have ever eaten! I have been coming here for almost a year. Found the place accidentally on a trip to DE. Now I can't visit DE without coming here!

I've eaten here three times now and I definitely enjoy it. The chicken is so juicy and tasty. We usually order the whole chicken meal that comes with yellow rice and salad. The salad is crap, but everything else is so good, including the plantains (sweet bananas). I will definitely be back.

Stopped in with a date to try things out. We got the Shrimp ceviche`. My date was a little dubious, as never having seen ceviche` offered as a platter. It was served with an onion salad and a couple pf potatoes. It was really good. We had this and a couple of beers and went on our way for the night. I plan on stopping back and trying a few other things. I only giving three stars at this point as I only have the one dish to base it on.

If I could add 6 I would. We love this place. Their chicken is the best we had from Peruvian style chicken places and we have visited a few.

I was on the way home after visiting a friend in Newark. I had seen a sign for Casapulla's sub shop and decided to get a chicken cheese steak. To my surprise, they were closed on Sunday's. I had seen a Mexican grocery store and stopped in there to see if they had a kitchen so I could eat a burrito. Unfortunately, they didn't. So I asked the proprietor about The Chicken House and she said they served good food. Little did I know this was a Peruvian restaurant. I ordered the house special, half a chicken with rice. I was pleasantly surprised eating the slow roasted charcoal grilled finger licking good chicken! The meat just fell off the bone. I was given a condiment to add to the chicken and rice named "aji amarillo." It had the perfect amount of kick for flavor and consistency. I will return to this establishment.

Tried the Chicken House recently after reading all of the good reviews here and was really disappointed. The chicken was on par with what you'd get at Boston Market and the "Best of Delaware" (not that Delaware Today is a good judge anyway) ceviche was rubbery and devoid of flavor. Granted the potato and the sweet potato served with it were ok as was the yummy corn. They did have to-die-for maduros but that did not make up for the so-so tostones, the salty, rubbery calamari, or the tres leches cake, seemingly deviod of any milk component, served gracefully by pushing just about all of our dinner and appetizer dishes aside to make room for the cake, because they only ceremoniously removed a dish or two from our entire meal, leaving salad bowl, appetizer dishes, entree dishes, and the like to make room for the cake (who wants to see what's left of your salad when you eat cake). The next table over suffered from the same salad bowl being left there and they, too, hardly touched their cake. Even our check was presented by reshuffling more dishes aside.

Chicken House has turned me into a chicken snob! The Peruvian spices and yellow sauce are like crack and are very addictive. Love this place! Inexpensive and portion sizes are decent.

Considering my lack of familiarity with Peruvian cuisine, aside from the single encounter while frequenting DC; my experiences dining at this restaurant have been very positive. In terms of service and food, I have zero complaints. I typically will buy the Saltado de Pollo or the Brocetas.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm still really interested in America. Why the hell have I visited 37 states? All the kids from my college thought bumming around Vientiane or Kampala was the bee's knees. The ones with trust funds are probably still doing that. Bodysurfing and throwing jello shots at each other in Cartagena. Maybe on a quest to find the world's best hashish. Sell an article to Esquire and tell Dad, I AM working, leave me alone. But then I find a place like The Chicken House. This is what America is about. Probably what John Jay and James Madison had in mind. People who perceived a market for Peruvian food. After all, they were tired of driving to New York City or Washington every time they wanted good ceviche or chicken. So they opened a restaurant. Right next door to the Chinese family who sell fat people reconstituted goop. In a strip mall. Weird. I lived here for nearly two years. The only consolation about finding The Chicken House on my second-to-last night here was that I could eat there again tonight. It's not the best ceviche I've ever had. Or the best pollo a la brasa. But it's a lot better than some versions. And the chicken was a lot more flavorful and a lot less greasier than the version offered at a nameless, renowned spot in Washington. Good plantains, sweet and tostones. And good salsa criolla to eat with your chicken. If you're ever stuck in New Castle County, or driving on 95 and hungry for something other than Sunoco gasoline and Doritos, here's your spot. It's the second best restaurant in Delaware that I've found, behind Sambo's in Leipsic. Both of these spots are what I like about America. Almost everything else in Delaware is what I hate.

I stand by this: I don't have to know how to cook Peruvian chicken to know what's in my mouth is GOOD. I've been here probs half a dozen times. It never fails to split a half rotisserie chicken with my boyfriend on a plate of fries with a pre-meal salad. Definitely remember to ask for extra yellow and green sauces. The yellow has a creamier, swifter kick. And if the yellow isn't enough dare yourself to ask for the red. That one's hott. Skip the side of plantains, they don't come out sweet or crispy. They were like mushed thick plantain chips with an AWESOME minced garlic chutney. All in all plan to spend under $20 (including tip) for a meal for two here.

The Peruvian wonder of Kirkwood Highway. The food here is pretty taste, but most of all I'm a huge fan of the sauce they give you. It's casual dining in, but I usually get take-out. The sandwiches are pretty nice.

So there I was ... a business traveler staying overnight along I-95 ... resigned to a gustatory fate at one or another generic restaurant chains ... but no!! I stumble upon the Chicken House, a nondescript storefront reveals a Peruvian restaurant chock full of charcoal-grilled pollo delights.

I've only had the chicken from here but it's good and tasty and moist. The salads are plain and nothing special. I like the fried yucca. The aji hot sauce is very good too. Someday I'll dine in and try more things.

Just got back from having lunch here. I stopped by on a whim after passing it by several times. A colleagues recommendation is what sealed the deal. The service was great! I informed my server that this was my first time dining in their establishment, and my first experience with peruvian food to begin with. She was quite helpful in going over the day's specials and pointed out some of her favorite dishes from the menu. I ended up getting "the beloved dish" which was a beef dish, with tomatoes, peppers, onions and french fries all mixed with a white wine and soy sauce, served with white rice. She suggested I try it with chicken and gave me the option for white or dark meat. As I waited, she brought out a quarter of the house chicken with their spicy sauce, on the house, so I could try their specialty. The spice rub on the chicken was definitely latin influenced, but a different nuance than I had ever tried. Their spicy sauce was a perfect accent, not overwhelming at all. My entree was also quite good. I left very satisfied and had only spent $10. I can't recommend this place enough and will definitely be bringing my friends and family back to try out all the different flavors!

Peruvian Pollo a la Braza trumps plain old rotisserie chicken any day of the week, and The Chicken House in Newark, DE does a great job of it. The chicken is juicy and full of flavor and is a delight served with thick cut fries and aji amarillo (peruvian yellow chile sauce). This is another place that makes living in the Big D just that much better. I have tried their lomo saltado, which was tasty but not out of this world. The reason to come here is the chicken... as the name implies.
