Soffritto Italian Grill Menu

What is up with the Italian food in Newark? Someone told me this place was the best, but I honestly thought it was just a slight notch better than Olive Garden. I had a linguine with clams, which I thought was underflavored and overpriced. My sister had their chicken parmesan, which she thought was adequate but a little overly salted. Soffrito is decent for the area, but definitely not a place I would revisit. Honestly, I'd rather open a jar of Ragu and make pasta myself.

If I were more of an Italian fan I would probably give this spot four stars, but I always leave Italian restaurants saying to myself, "Self, did you really just pay $20 for that bowl of pasta and sauce you could have made at home for $3?" Was that pasta better than I could make at home? Yes, probably, so that's the decision you have to make... I thought the service was fantastic. The server was very professional and attentive. I though the calamari was excellent, very lightly fried with great flavor. I prefer an aioli with my calamari, over a marinara sauce, but it was a good dish. A salad comes with the purchase of an entree and that was a big underwhelming for me. The small amount of iceberg lettuce wasn't really what I was looking for, so I went for the caesar salad at a $4.00 up-charge! Yowzas. The caesar was definitely better than the iceberg salad, but it wasn't $4.00 better. I had the vodka penne and added grilled chicken as an entree. The flavors were great, pasta perfectly cooked, and a good amount of chicken added. But as I was saying earlier, by the time I up-charged on the caesar and added grilled chicken to my entree I was over $25 for a salad and pasta entree. Just seems a bit steep. Tip - I checked in on Yelp and got a coupon for a free dessert; guess that made up for my $4 up-charge caesar. So all in all its a good spot. If you've got a big Italian fan in your family, its a good special occasion meal. I don't think we'll be back until family visits, just kind of expensive for the type of food (granted, I think its probably the best in the area, but not sure that warrants the prices.)

We took a couple of out-of-town guests to Soffritto over the weekend. I had been there once for an office holiday party, but we WON'T be going back. We had an airhead for a waitress! Took forever to get our drinks. Two members of our group ordered the special (crab, shrimp and lobster ravioli), only to be told after we had eaten our salads that they were out of lobster ravioli. Mind you, we had a 6:30 reservation! The diners were given the choice of having shrimp and/or crab, but opted for other off the menu dishes instead. The food was fairly good, but we felt it was overpriced. What is up with a $5 upcharge for a Caesar salad when a house salad is included with entree?? Please! When we received the bill, they had not taken the $27 charges for the specials off and it was a logistical nightmare to have it adjusted. The waitress was too concerned finding out where we were from and identifying our accents than to give us good service. To top it all off, I took part of my lasagna home in a box, which was clearly marked "Lasagna" and the date. But it contained another diner's leftovers!!! C'mon - get your act together!!!

Excellent, friendly, knowledgable staff. Wonderful food. Good wine (I've only had the Pinot Grigio). Best of all, the owner has been there every time I've gone. He is friendly and obviously very involved with his restaurant. My parents and I love this restaurant. I really like that the atmosphere is always quiet when I go. Excellent!

Let me start by saying I was craving Italian food and in the end the food was good. However, for what you get everything is overpriced by about $4.00 an item. The kids meal had 3 large cheese ravioli for $9.00, really, and it was an additional $2.50 for my daughters drink so $11.50 for the kids meal.!!!! Oh I almost forgot that there is a $5.00 up charge to a caesar salad from the included house salad, again REALLY!!!! The service was good and so was the food but for what it was it isn't worth the price. Maybe if the owners would do the math they would realize they are losing more business than what they are making on the overpriced items. We won't be going back anytime soon.

The food was good! I had the fettucine crostaci. It had scallops, shrimp and crab meat in a tasty sauce. My date had lasagna an he Loved it! The key lime pie wasn't good however. Last time i was there i had some pear dessert. And it was deeeeelish! Will def go back :)

I really was expecting to like Soffritto better. There menu was extensive and they had some very interesting items. But the taste (we ordered a fish dish and a chicken dish), while "fine" just wasn't as interesting or outstanding as I'd hoped based on the reviews. Perhaps something else would have been better. What really disappointed me was (1) the expensive kid's menu -- $9 for a small bowl of pasta (no sauce per my daughter's current tastes) plus an additional $2 for a drink. My other daughter did not like her "weird tasting pizza" and barely touched it (probably too gourmet for a 7 year old to enjoy). So we were out $22 for overpriced, under-enjoyed kids meals. The other disappointments were (2) the limited knowledge the server had about the food and (3) that they seated us close to the kitchen despite us having a reservation and the restaurant being pretty empty. I'm in no hurry to come back, but if I do, I will not bring the kids and hope to hit a better menu choice next time.

I had the salmone alla soffritto which was excellent. I am very surprised at the negative reviews. I'm a Brooklyn native that grew up in Bensonhurst and has spent a lot of time in Italy. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner. Perhaps, it depends on what you order. The dessert, however, was another story. We ordered the sample...3 mini desserts....below par!

Pricey but maybe worth a once or twice a year visit. Had the Caesar salad which was excellent. Crispy cold romaine with crunchy croutons, a healthy dose of shave Parmesan and a homemade dressing with hint of anchovy. Eggplant Parma was huge portion and side of fresh pasta perfectly cooked. Only complaint was maybe too much thick sauce and too much cheese. Great service. Why so pricey?

I would love to give this restaurant more stars just on the fact their food is very good. Unfortunately, the customer service I experienced was so poor I had little choice but to give it two stars. The good: The food was amazing, my hat off to the chef, everything I ordered in my three visits surpassed my expectations. The rigatoni vodka was out of this world. The bad: Two out of three times I went I felt the service provided by the servers were below standards. They were slow to respond, didn't or wouldn't explain menu items, and all in all just unpleasant to interact with. Maybe I was just unlucky but the last time my guest and I found the server so rude and unattentive I decided not to return again, no matter how good the food was. The ugly: my last experience was so poor that I emailed them with the details. I expected at least an apology, the canned response I received from them made me feel that the poor customer service was business as usual and they didn't really need my money. I was happy to oblige by no longer patronizing the establishment. The food is amazing, but customer service is high on my list when I go to an upscale restaurant.

Went here for a birthday dinner for a friend. We were a group of seven. When my boyfriend and I arrived first we noticed the restaurant was not empty but certainly not nearing a wait. The hostesses found our reservation and informed us that our table was ready. In the next instant the other hostess said "you can wait at the bar.... Or I could seat you if you want." It wasn't rude by any means it just made it seem like I would be a bother to the staff if I sat at the table. I heard the same exchange happen to two more couples that had reservations and were meeting people that had yet to arrive. When everyone arrived we sat at the table. Our server, Kelly, was very friendly. She was efficient and didn't rush us. We got the calamari which was very good. I ordered the ziti and the server asked if the garden salad was ok or did I want the mesclun or Caesar salad for an upcharge. I got the mesclun. When the salads arrived I was happy I got the mesclun the garden salad looked lacking and the dish was large which made the salad look small and unappetizing. The honey balsamic dressing on the mesclun was phenomenal! The server advised that they make it in house. The ziti was delicious and the portion was huge. When the check arrived I was shocked. I was a five dollar charge for the mesclun salad! That's outrageous! It's already a little pricey and my meal came with a salad I cannot fathom how my salad was five dollars better than the garden. It was a great salad but not that great. Gratuity was added to the check which was 18% which I found a little rude on the restaurants part. Their salad is a five dollar added charge but their server isn't worth 20% gratuity to them? Overall the food was good the service was great, but the hostess and the bizarre pricing left me underwhelmed.

When I lived in Delaware this was one of my favorites. The atmosphere is lovely and the food is amazing. I absolutely love the Roasted Red Peppers and Mozzerella and my all time fav is the Linguini Alle Vongole (clams sautéed spicy red sauce over homemade linguini) Their Bellini(s) are tasty too.

I've never been here and had a complaint about the food or service. I think it's a bit up scale in comparison to some of the local places- so take a date here and I don't think you will be disappointed!

Two words, 'not good'. After receiving several recommendations for this restaurant my husband and I finally decided to try it. While sitting at the table they had a placard that stated 'voted best Italian restaurant outside of Italy' based upon a competition in Rome June '13. So I have to admit we had high expectations for this place. The bread served at the table tasted like cheap french bread pizza, minus cheese. The salads were your typical bag salad blend, nothing special. Onto the main course, my husband and I both ordered the dinner specials for the evening. One was surf & turf and the other was Chesapeake style twin crab cakes. As a Maryland native I was skeptical of getting the crab cakes, but with such rave reviews of the place I said why not. Simply stated, they were horrible. A far cry from chesapeake style! The surf and turf was a tad better, the steak was very tender and had good flavor. However the single colossal shrimp stuffed with crab imperial was pathetic, the shrimp as more like 27/30 count size; no where near colossal. To sum it up we had a coupon for a free dessert, however we didn't even bother ordering anything. We just paid for this ridiculously overpriced tasteless meal and left. Do not understand what the hype is, we will not be returning; waste of $100.

Not really sure why anybody would give this place more than 3 stars (and that's pushing it). This is the most unauthentic Italian food I've had in my whole life. I think I've had better at the olive garden! I remember having a tomato cream pasta dish and my boyfriend at the time had I think baked ziti. The food came out cold and the pasta sauce tasted like it came from a can. The pasta wasn't cooked well either so that didn't make our experience any better. I'll still give them 2 stars because the service was good but I can't really recommend going to this place.

My boyfriend and I dined in Thursday evening and it was a wonderful experience. We were greeted by a smiling hostess who took us right to a half booth half table lit by candle light. Our server Zach brought the wine list right over and told us about their feature entrees that sounded very good. We ordered two featured martinis that were strong but flavorful. We also ordered a bottle of Chianti that was wonderful and the wine menu in general had a wide selection of not just Italian wines. My boyfriend got the Veal Sinatra and I got the chicken stuffed shells. We enjoyed both sauces and you could tell they were made fresh for each customer, which Zach reminded us that all the entrees are sauteed per customer order. After dinner we thought we were way too full for dessert but Zach brought out the dessert menu and we could not resist the homemade tiramisu that was a family recipe. We finished our meal with a cappuccino that was nice and hot with a large dollop of foam on top, which is how we like it. It was so nice of the manager to come by and see us as well. It seemed like he went to ever table just to see how they were doing. We came in expecting a nice meal but the whole experience made us feel like we were celebrating an anniversary on just a normal Thursday. I was surprised to see so so reviews of Yelp, so I decided to share our wonderful experience. We will be back to Soffritto for sure!

The food is very good. Several good specials and better than your typical italian food. My son had the bolognese sauce with gnocchi which he said was very good. I had a special of lobster and crab ravioli which was good but I honestly couldn't taste much of the lobster and crab. My husband had the surf and turf which consisted of filet mignon (a bit overcooked) and one stuffed shrimp. For appetizers we ordered three, the fried calamari which was crispy with a great texture, shrimp encrusted with spices and a chipotle sauce and the eggplant. All three were excellent! The food was good and we would return but would try other restaurants first before we did eat here again considering the value and quality. Service was very good.

Without a doubt Soffitto's Italinan Grill is one of the most consistent Italian restaurants in the State of Delaware. From our greeting from the hostess, to our great server and from the frequent visits from Giovanni (owner) you could not have asked for better service or attention. The food and service all always great and we find this a great place to celebrate a special ocassion and tonight was one of those - our wedding anniversary and once again Soffitto's came thru and did not disappoint.

Nice little place for some excellent food. Walnut coated shrimp appetizer was excellent. The bruschetta was good, especially if you like olives. Rigatoni primavera was very good, cooked just right with a sauce that very flavorful. Service was perfect and the decor was very pleasant. If you are in the mood for Italian food in a comfortable atmosphere, this is a good choice.

Soffritto is one of the best restaurants in Newark, no doubt about it. It deserves a solid 4.5-5 stars, and I heartily recommend it. I went to Soffritto last week for an office holiday lunch with a large group of 30 people. I had no problems making reservations and the staff was very accommodating for such a large group. It did take about 2.5 hours to get through the whole meal, but that was including appetizers, salad, entree, and dessert. So not too bad for 30 people. The best reason to come to Soffritto is for the food, of course. At my table, we sampled 4 different appetizers: antipasti, calamari, littleneck clams, and spinach and artichoke dip. The calamari and clams were among the best I've had, and the antipasti was pretty good too. The artichoke dip was the only thing I wouldn't order again, as it was too heavy on the cheese. The selection of entrees, both on the permanent menu and specials, is very extensive. It covers all types of pasta and dishes based on chicken, beef, and seafood. I opted for a veal dish on the special menu. It was OK, not incredible, but this was the first time I had tried veal, so I can't really say how good it was compared to other restaurants. My companions liked their entrees and didn't have any complaints. Also, I should mention that the entrees at lunch are no more than $15 for a lot of food. Finally, there are a ton of selections for dessert. They have a small menu of pie-type desserts but also some not on the menu like gelato, bananas foster, sherbet, etc. I tried the bananas foster, which was flambed at the table and was a good choice. Overall, I would really recommend Soffritto. It's not the best restaurant in Newark, or even the best Italian restaurant (that honor goes to Caffe Gelato), but Soffritto is a more economical choice without skimping on quality.

I was in town on business and since I had found and tried an excellent Italian restaurant 3 years before, I figured I would go again. I tried unsuccessfully to find that place so I went here based on the favorable reviews. Well I expected better. Its a popular place and the server and management was cordial and capable. I went early, before 6pm. Service was a little slow it shouldn't take 10 minutes to get a salad. Salad was ordinary. The entree arrived shortly afterwards. I ordered chicken Alla Sofritto. Nice dish with good flavor. Chicken was very thin and slightly overcooked. Mixed veggies were cooked perfectly as well as the red potatoes. Overall it is a decent place but my dish was slightly above average. To be fair, I would have to try other food to properly evaluate.

This was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. The atmosphere is fine, but the table service was not good and the meal was terrible. I ordered the caprese salad and the pasta e fagioli soup. That's not what was delivered. I called the waitress over and quietly said that the meal was not what I had ordered. She just stood and looked at me. I finally suggested that she might want to take it back to the kitchen and bring out what I had asked for. She asked what I had asked for, and by that time I was annoyed so I just told her to check the order she'd written down. She disappeared and a bit later the right thing came out. She set it down in a bit of a huff, as if it were my fault she'd brought the wrong items. And this was not during a rush--there were only about three other occupied tables at the time. Having gotten the right food, I was looking forward to the caprese salad--pretty hard to mess up--but, in the middle of prime tomato season, the tomatoes in the caprese were both flavorless and mushy, the mozzarella tasted slightly off, there was no basil anywhere on the plate, and the whole affair was drowned (not sprinkled, as the menu indicated) in olive oil. The pasta e fagioli soup which I also ordered was so salty as to be inedible. My friend ordered a caesar salad with chicken. The chicken was overcooked--both stringy and sawdust dry--and the romaine looked like it had been sitting out a couple of days. I had eaten here before, with mediocre results and had decided to give it another try. I am very sorry I did so. I will not go back again.

I came here awhile back for a birthday dinner with my mom and brother, per my mom's suggestion (I found out later that she had a discount voucher). I feel that I skew lower than many people with my ratings on Yelp, but given that my meal here was the best Italian-style meal I've had to date, and certainly ranks in my top 10 restaurant meals, I feel that a 5 star rating is justified. This place is definitely head-and-shoulders above all of the other Italian-style restaurants I've eaten at in DE, so if you enjoy this type of cuisine, I'd recommend checking it out if you're in the area. My mom and I ordered seafood raviolis, which have either been discontinued or were a special, since I no longer see them on the menu. They came covered with a delicate creamy tomato sauce, which added just enough tomato flavor without overpowering the crab inside. The combination of flavors from the crab and sauce was just excellent. The pasta was perfectly tender, without being too soft. The presentation was aesthetically pleasing, and the portions were perfectly sized--just enough to fill you up, but not enough to make you feel bloated. I forget what my brother had, but he enjoyed his meal very much, as well. We went early on an off night (I think it was a Mon.), so it wasn't crowded at all. Service was a bit slow, but not unforgivably so. The atmosphere is very romantic--this would be a great place for a nice date. For the quality of food here, I feel that the prices are fair--they're on par with those of competitors serving similar-quality food (e.g., La Casa Pasta). If you're looking for cheap, mediocre Italian-style food, then by all means, head over to the Olive Garden. Otherwise, Soffritto's a great place to enjoy some of the best Italian-style cooking you'll find north of the canal in DE.

I have been here twice and the first was fine; not great. The second time I was meeting my parents there for dinner. I got there early and enjoyed a few drinks at the bar. When they arrived we were immediately seated. We were catching up, taking the meal slowly and just enjoying each other's company. The server was AWFUL. He would interrupt at every opportunity he could, forgot about things ordered, the works. When the owner came around we made sure to tell him, but as nice of a guy that he was, it seemed afterwards that nothing was addressed. The food wasn't fantastic and we won't be back.

Stopped here on a whim for dinner tonight. We have been here before and this place never disappoints. I had the calamari which was perfectly cooked and the marinara sauce is very tasty. My main dish was the Ziti which was absolutely fantastic. The red sauce is to die for. The portions are a great size and I couldn't finish it all. For desert, I got the strawberry gelato with was fresh and very good. I recommend coming here for a great night out with your wife or husband.

We just love it here! We've been here a few times & each time the food has been really good, the service excellent and an overall great experience. If we lived closer we'd stop by more often. Drinks: Love the wine & cocktail section. Makes a big difference when you can have a wide variety of choices with your meal. There are so many options that you'll be able to choose the perfect pair to go well with your meal choice. Food: We've had a few pasta dishes - that had seafood, meat and a different sauces and the portions have been plenty and really good flavors. I had the lamb one time & I can't stop thinking about it! I love lamb and it is hard for places to get perfect. It was amazing. Service: Also really good - we even had the owner stop by and talk about their Limencello, different wines that they carry and it was really nice. He was really friendly & informative. Reservations: Make them - they are pretty busy here and there but it is very easy to make a reservation via Yelp or phone. Looking forward to our next visit. I'd highly recommend stopping in here. Yum.

We have been there several times over the past few years. We think the food has improved over time. We enjoy going there. On our last visit, I had the classic linguini (homemade) with meatballs, and topped with the classic red sauce. Thoroughly enjoyed the pasta, the meatballs, and the sauce, with quite a bit left to take home. My wife had a special that included scallops with cappallini and vegetable in a flavor sauce; very enjoyable. A little on the pricey side, but certainly good food and good service. We return on a regular basis.

Had purchase two trays of food Chicken Marsala, Cavatelli Bolognese and meatballs for birthday party and he food was great everyone loved the food and the employee that drop the food was right on time (wish some of the guess were) but she was very professional. The assistance manager threw in a few serving items and other item which help out. Over all recommend this restaurant. Thanks again for the great meal.

I came here last night with a group of 5. I have to say everyone was very pleased with their meals. The décor must have been updated recently, as it was much nicer inside than the last time I was there. Our server was very attentive, especially since there were not many diners at 7:30 on a Tuesday night. We had the calamari, crab dip, roasted peppers and mozzarella, and the lobster bisque. The calamari was average, nothing special, but the crab dip was excellent. The lobster bisque had great flavor and nice chunks of meat. I had the Cesar salad and thought it was average. I decided to pay $5 to upgrade from the garden salad, and I was glad I did. You actually get your money's worth in doing this, as the add on Cesar was twice the size of the garden salad. I would have preferred a little more anchovy in the dressing. For entrees we had the chicken Soffritto, chicken Sinatra, rib eye steak, pasta alla vodka, and shrimp and broccoli alfredo. Both chicken dishes were very tender, and the sauces were light, not overpowering. My friend said his steak was cooked perfectly. The pasta alla vodka was excellent, and I would highly recommend it. The alfredo sauce was a little on the thick side, so it made the dish a tad bit dry, but had good taste. For the 5 of us the total bill was $211, and that included 5 drinks. If you are looking for decent Italian in the Newark area, this place is definitely worth a try.

Our group of five went on a Friday night. We had reservations but there were available tables when we arrived. The waiter greeted us warmly and soon we were provided drinks, very fresh breads and soon an excellent crab dip appetizer. When we received our meals however things changed. The presentation of the meals was nice but the quality of the food was poor. I ordered a mediterranian something which was linguini with mussels, clams, shrimp and scallops in red sauce. My son ordered the same thing. As the meal arrived it smelled as if it came off the back of a manure spreader. There were numerous mussels but only five calms, five scallops and three shrimp. The amount of pasta was not overwhelming. All of that for $30.00 . The other meals were ok, but nothing great. The place inside looks great and the hospitality was very good as well. The food quality however was poor which surprises me looking at the other reviews. I guess we stopped in on an off night. I will not return.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
