Mayflower Japanese Restaurant Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Mayflower is my favorite inexpensive restaurant on Main Street, hence 5 stars. It doesn't look like much from the exterior, and it's never crowded; that's probably because they rely on takeout. Indeed, eating in isn't usually the best idea--the water cups are wasteful styrofoam and you have to ask to get them refilled--but it's fine enough that I'm not going to knock them for it. Make sure to clear your own plates before leaving too as there's no real waitstaff. Food notes: -sushi is great/$ (obviously not the best or you'd pay more) -lunch specials are good (a bit salty for my tastes) -The chicken udon's my go-to eat-in item so I don't have to deal with the water cups as much

I agree with another reviewer that Bamboo House ( yelp.com/biz/bamboo-hous… ) might be a better choice for a date. Mayflower, however, certainly offers a nice deal with their two roll vegetarian special. With a 1 dollar upcharge for brown rice, I enjoyed 16 pieces of fresh avacado and cucumber along with a crisp sweet potato tempura for $6.50. The wasabi was not as strong as I would have liked and is served as a cube. The texture was a bit brittle, as I prefer a paste. The turnaround time, though a bit slow, was hardly insufferable around the 1:30 hour. Take a seat in their small and unadorned storefront and enjoy the lack of pretension and noisy cable TV in the background. There's very little interior design to speak of, and that's just fine for a place like this. It might be a small thing, but I was pleased by how quiet the place was. No rattling talk show in the background, no top 40. The staff were genuinely kind, and that's no small thing. A rad little detail--they have a bucket specifically for recycling next to the trash. That's not all that common for a place like this, and I appreciated it.

I love sushi in mayflower so much ! The restaurant is not big or fancy, but the sushi are even better than those in much more expensive places.

Today,i order a szechuan pickle meat noodle.Because there are a lot of people waiting for their lunch, the new waiter take the wrong dish to another person, which should belong to me.I see that man eat the wrong noodle,at the same time, the woman boss ask the waiter to take it back.I see everything by my eye,and I let the woman boss to change the noodle for me,then she tells a lie to me said that is not mine, and give me the noodle which is eaten by the man!Shit!I take the second-eaten noodle.I feel so queasy!Do not go there anymore!trust me!

Update: mayflower has begun using nicer dishes for those who dine in! Still best sushi place ever with the best spicy mayo on my planet.

If Mayflower had a mascot I feel the turtle couldn't be more appropriate. "Order will be ready in 15 minutes." this statement is off by approx 45 minutes. Once the food is served it is mostly scrumptious! 2 roll special is $7.5 and 3 roll is $11. I've mostly had only sushi...but it's def worth the... ... ... wait.

Ok food but annoyingly slow. Add additional 25-60 minutes to their estimated time. Don't go inside if you want to go for a date, Bamboo is better

Just as many of others have stated previously, this place is just OK for a quick bite. It's a hole in the wall type of place and isn't visually appealing when you first walk in; it's cold, no decor save for some old sushi pictures, and wouldn't say the employees go out of there way to make you feel welcomed. The ingredients tend to be fresh and the sushi rolls aren't anything to write home about whether it be the taste or the size. I only go here when I don't want to hop on 95 to go to Takumi to be honest. It's cheap and will do if you have a sushi craving so I don't write this place off if you happen to be nearby. I usually get the spicy tuna and sweet potato rolls and am satisfied but again, nothing special about them.

The delivery service is awful. I ordered my food at 12:30pm but didn't get it until 2:00pm. I called them twice to see where were my food. The guy who delivered my food said I called them and said bad words to them which I didn't. He also said because I only ordered one dish so I should wait for a longer time or give more tips. I said no and he said I am NOT EDUCATED and people from mainland China are all like this. I just don't understand why where I come from is related to their awful service. He also shouted at me and told me I can tell my friends and he didnt care, which is rediculous! I didn't even mention and think about it. But thanks to him, I decided to write a review on yelp and let people see what kind of mind set they have behind the scene. I have never met people who are so unreasonable. It was a completley awful experience and please think twice to go there, especially if you are from mainland China.

I order delivery from here on an almost weekly basis. Delicious food, and they always deliver fast. I have only been inside their actual location once, and while small and cozy, we received fast and great service.

Food tastes okay. Do not go there if you just want to grab a quick meal, as it takes forever for them to get your order ready!

best sushi in delaware! i would suggest delivery or ordering to-go, because the actual restaurant is a little bare bones... think plastic silverware and portable heaters on the cafeteria style tables. i would suggest the yaki udon noodles and the spicy crunchy tuna roll!

My first clue that this was going to be good? I walked in and put a to-go order in and they were SLAMMED. People were walking to get food on a cold, dreary mid-week night to get food from this tiny little place. The staff is friendly and the food is amazing. The food is cheap and wonderful. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area. I've been back a couple of times already and just can't seem to get enough! It doesn't look like much but man is it wonderful!

The food was good, but not great. We ordered delivery, and it took about 2 hrs to arrive. the last time we ordered, it took 1hr 30min. not a very good track record. For the amount of time we had to wait, the food was not worth it.

I'm not a big complaint type person I believe that every establishment deserves a chance, but for my money and time I will not have it wasted for sub-par at best food. This had to be the worst sushi/Japanese dish I have ever had. I read most of the reviews about this place and decided to try it for a change in my lunch restaurants. I took into consideration of their delivery time and ordered with plenty of time. I didn't order super fancy things. Just a sushi special and a hibachi steak. I also ordered it online as to save the "lost in translation" aspect. What arrive looked good presentation wise, but once I started to dive in everything went way downhill. The rice was way overcooked for the steak dish along with the steak being tough and chewy and in limited portion. I had requested no vegetables in the steak dish and there were vegetables. The sushi was fine until you tried to eat the "cucumber" as it was really inedible. As I explained to the restaurant it tasted like water chestnuts that had dunked in fermented water. I cannot in good conscious recommend this place to anyone honestly. Next time I'll just deal with the norms around me.

I have to say that since I left my last review mayflowers service and quality have gone quickly downhill. I ordered lunch. From them last week and selected the window for pick up between 1130 and 1140, I arrived at 11:45 and the food was not ready. I actually did not receive it until 11:58, even though the poor girl at the front constantly told me " it'll be just another moment!" I got back to my office with only a couple minutes to spare, and was dismayed to find out not only was my chicken teriyaki undercooked, but it was lacking in sauce altogether. Needless to say I will not be revisiting Mayflower anymore. it's a shame because I've given them so much business over the years as have my coworkers.

My last 2 outings were twilight zone-esque, and progressively worse. This last outing, the eel could easily have been cut from a Firestone tire, and the Tamago was undoubtedly made from powdered eggs. The fish was warm, and not at all pleasant. It is summer, so I can only imagine that turnover and business is significantly lower. Proceed with caution.

For the price, I have to say I am pretty impressed with the quality of food at Mayflower. The fish in the sushi is always fresh, and everything is cooked to order. However, don't come here looking for ambience or gourmet fare. It's quick, cheap, easy and no-frills. For sushi I recommend the Ruby roll, and for hot fare, the teriyaki dishes are always good.

  • Que S.

If I could of left a half of star I would. Mediocre food you can prepare yourself, my "chicken teriyaki" was just a plain chicken breast with no sauce!. Theres WAY better places out there. HORRIBLE RUDE customer service and food takes forever to get to you...I will NEVER give them money ever again.

This is a great Hole-in-the-wall place. The food is really good and cheap too, I am not a U OF D student either. This is like a fast food type of place. They have seating for about 32. Looks like they do a big take-out business .

I stopped by to try this place that seemed to have some good reviews. i perused the menu and settled on yaki udon and some basic sushi. The udon noodle were nice and even, but a bit doughy and starchy. I also found them to be a bit oily and one dimensional in flavor. The noodles themselves were a bit pasty and lacked flavor. However, not unexpected for mass produced noodles, doubt there are fresh udon noodles in Delaware. For sushi I went with the tekka (tuna) and kappa (cucumber) maki (rolls) to be able to evaluate the sushi-su. The tuna was fresh and had good texture without any mealiness or grainy texture. The cucumber was fresh and crisp. The tekka maki was made as an inside out style roll, which seemed a bit odd, but not bad. The maki were rolled tightly and well formed. The sushi-su or flavoring for the rice was okay. I found it it to lack a good balance of vinegar and sweetness. The rice was okay, but there was some overcooked texture to the rice. Overall I found the yaki udon disappointing, but judging the noodle quality I think hot udon in broth would probably be fine. The sushi was okay for the quality you would expect at a chain restaurant. Okay for a quick bite but not somewhere I would pick for good quality sushi.

This is a hole-in-the-wall sushi place if I ever have seen one! Extremely minimal, next-to-no decor. Very low prices ($7.50-$10 for a pretty filling meal of sushi, including fish). The quality of the sushi here is very good. The only thing lacking here about the food is that the pickled ginger and wasabi are not the highest quality. It's not the most artful presentation either, but the ingredients are very fresh which is what matters most to me. Service is slightly slow...but it is because everything is made to order. Do not expect fast food service just because this place looks like a fast food joint. It is not. Selection is relatively small. And there's not all that much seating. But hey, who's complaining? Not me. I would recommend this place if you want high-quality Sushi for bargain prices. I have never found another place like this one, anywhere!

I couldn't believe it either, but this hole-in-the-wall place really is pretty awesome. the sushi is very good, they give you lots of it, and it's seriously cheap. zero ambiance here - it's cold in the winter, hot in the summer (which frankly is kind of scary when you know your raw fish is just sitting in a hot room waiting for you to pick it up. for basic food safety it seems they really should upgrade). but whatever, it's fine for takeout. you can get a ridiculous amount of sushi that would cost twice as much somewhere else. I'm a huge fan of the seaweed salad and oh my, the spicy salmon or tuna rolls. it's a somewhat limited fish selection but they have all the standard faves and tons of different rolls to choose from, or you can do nigiri. Thai entrees are decent (WHY is there no Thai place on Main St?), but I stick to sushi. very convenient ordering online too. right on.

Great place for an order-at-the-counter sort of establishment. The quality of food and portion size is worth the price alone. (Which ranges from $6-10 per entree) Don't go there for the ambiance. While the staff is very pleasant, the decor, lighting, and seating is that of a typical "Number 1 China" sort of fare. This is perfect to stop in for a quick lunch or grab takeout.

Great prices. I've had better sushi, but I think they have an interesting variety and you can also place an order from grub hub or seamless web- which I always love when ordering out right from my phone.

LOVE THIS PLACE. It is such a hole in the wall, but I always get my sushi from here. Sushi is AMAZING and so reasonably priced. They have many rolls to choose from but sometimes it gets busy so you may have to wait. Take out is best as there isn't much seating. I've been going here for several years now. I've had sushi from so many different places, but this place is honestly the best.

First and foremost, their rice is top notch. Mayflower was a near-weekly visit of mine during my time at University of Delaware. For what it is, an affordable Japanese take out joint, it does it well. They have well priced combination meals that will allow you to get a little bit of whatever you want whether it be sushi, tempura, gyoza, and so on. I tended to stick with chicken and shrimp as it was the most affordable and found that the scallops and salmon weren't as well prepared to be worth the extra cost. I haven't eaten enough of their sushi to be a judge; the California rolls I had were just fine. Their aesthetic isn't quite welcoming but you're not dining there; you're planing on taking this home and devouring it while watching some syndicated television late at night. But seriously, try and not finish every grain of rice on your plate.

i eat here at least once a week! Mayflower's prices are reasonable and their sushi is delicious. I love that you can order online for delivery or pickup! You can even order online if you are paying in cash. Their website features weekly specials and is very easy to use. This is by far the BEST sushi is newark, maybe even norther Delaware!

Wow saw the reviews on yelp and had to try it for myself. Everything that people said was true. Hole in the wall. Easy parking it is at a shopping center. Served on paper plates. But I would take cheap sushi over ambiance any day. It was awesome. The rice was perfect in the sushi and to top it off we were the only people speaking English in the restaurant. The place filling up at 11:30 on a Fridayafternoon. That is always a good sign to me. Wonderful place, great prices, top notch sushi salmon! I will visit as often as I can.

The other reviews are spot-on. I walked past Mizi to try this place out. It's cheap, basic (in terms of decor), and good. One slight problem: they don't have booze. But that's ok; I picked up some wine at Newark Liquors across the street and headed back home with my spicy yellow tail and tuna, and eel roll take-out. I'm gonna start coming here on a regular basis.

I do not normally write reviews, but I really feel that this restaurant is way too highly rated. My mother is a Japanese chef so I think I am somewhat qualified to review Japanese food. This is not good Japanese cuisine by any stretch! The tempura was too deeply fried, the calamari teriyaki was actually fried in tempura batter first. This is not authentic nor good food. If you are a poor student looking for a cheap meal that resembles Japanese then it will be okay.

  • Christie K.

I don't understand how this place is so highly rated. It's very hole in the wall, and on first impression it looks like a Chinese takeout restaurant. The sushi was okay, but I think Mizu is way better (on Main Street) even though it may be a dollar or two more expensive. The seating area is awkward, and the restaurant is self-serve style. I also tried the udon which was mushroom broth based (a little too 'in yo face fungi' taste for me), which was okay but I've had similar udon from a package.

Went with a couple friends based on the high Yelp ratings - we were in town for a workshop at UD. We were underwhelmed. My sushi - shrimp tempura plus avocado and "caviar" was tough and bland. My friends said their chicken teriyakis were one step up from food court fare. I was happy to find imported green tea in cans, but that was the only redeeming part of my meal. I wouldn't recommend this place - there are so many good restaurants on Main st.

The food is cheap and good for the money. Ordered from them many times, but never again after my last experience. An hour and 50 minutes for delivery? When I called and asked about the order the person answering the phones told me it was on its way, with no explanation or apology. The driver also ignored the long delivery time, and the manager offered no explanation or apology either. I am in the food industry so I politely explained what had happened, only to have the manager hang up on me. I can't even fathom how customer service like this can be allowed.

How does a college town have so few reviews of its restaurants? I was staying in a nearby hotel and decided to explore the area. This was probably the most crowded shop in the strip mall so I went in and checked out the menu. I'm usually wary of eating sushi from a slightly dingy shop in the middle of a random area, but it looked fresh and everyone else was ordering it so I went for it. An efficiently run shop with reasonable prices, I enjoyed my sushi. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but considering the location and price point, I'd probably come regularly if I lived anywhere nearby. I also noticed that they have online ordering on their website, a huge perk for students or workers, I imagine.

Good value. The teriyaki combos are tasty and filling. The rolls are pretty good too. The inside of the place is basic and occasionally gets crowded, but the food is good, especially for the price.

Ok,so the sushi is served on paper plates but the prices are worth it!! My boyfriend and I go here all the time and I've never been disappointed. My favorite is the volcano roll :)
