Great food, fast and attentive service. The best Mexican food in DE! We will be going back here! Service started great and we received chips and salsa before anything else. The tacos are amazing! Kids loved it and throughly enjoyed their meals as well!

For a quick stop for a warm, satisfying Mexican meal on the way home, La Tonalteca was a very welcome relief from the hell that is I-95. I'm so glad my husband found this gem via Yelp, so we now have a local place to stop when we're traveling on the I-95 corridor to visit family. I was immediately impressed by the bright, colorful, and welcoming decor. I wasn't sure what to expect based on the strip mall location, and I'm happy that the atmosphere is a little nicer than your typical strip mall Mexican joint. We were seated in a private booth, and being that is was pretty late for a Sunday night dinner, we actually still received very prompt service and prompt water refills. We started with the guacamole, and at $3.50 for the portion, it was a good size, and definitely enough for two adults to share. The chips tasted fresh, and were warm and thick without being greasy or salty. They also held up well in the complimentary salsa, which was pretty mild, but had a nice chunk to it. I wanted something that was more Mexican that "Tex-Mex" (something for everyone on the extensive menu), so I opted for the "puntas al albañil con pollo," which was a sauteed chicken dish of chicken chunks, jalapenos, mushrooms, onions, cheese, and cilantro. It also included guac, rice, beans, and I chose corn tortiilas. It was only $12.99, and was huge (see pic)! My husband opted for his usual chicken fajitas, and was very happy with his choice. The only point for improvement would have been for our waitress to bring us more than 2 tortillas at a time, since we were both plowing through them! I was also excited about the extra spicy "house" sauce that I asked for, which was a delectably spicy habanero-based sauce, which I really enjoyed. We will return when we pass by Newark/Christiana again! Maybe next time for a margarita from their huge drink list!

Pork carnitas is excellent. Sauces, salsas, and guacamole are freshly made and well spiced. Margaritas are made fresh, offered with various quality levels of tequila. Presidente margarita was well done. Tastes of fresh fruit juice. Colorful decor is bright and lively -- painted hand-carved chairs and metal artwork from Mexico. Service was excellent. Food delivered to the table promptly. One of our favorite restaurants to visit when traveling between DC and NY.

This restaurant has a very nice setup. The architecture was nice and the servers were pitch perfect and on top of everything. The food was good but the menu was a little confusing though. It is still a very good restaurant that I would recommend

I can proudly say I've never been more satisfied with a Mexican restaurant. First, let me start off by saying that I went to many La Toltecas as a child. My family loved the fajitas and it was a reliable place to go. As time went on, years passed, and for some reason the tradition died. Just yesterday, entering the revamped Tonalteca was like greeting an old friend. Upon being seated I was instantly impressed by the new atmosphere. It was intimate, perhaps even romantic, with easy, warm colors on the walls paired with dynamic artisan decorations and structures. If the service wasn't so quick (a matter of minutes each time) I'd have spent more time admiring my surroundings. Now to the food: While a staple appetizer at every Mexican restaurant, the chips and salsa here are exemplary. The chips were warm and crispy, the salsa was mild and delicious. Thoughtfully homemade. The cilantro was present without it being obvious, which was perfect. I was sad to see the chips empty, as was my partner -- I think I caught him stick his finger in the bowl for one last scoop. My partner is new to the Tolteca/Tonalteca empire so he insisted on getting the sampler appetizer. Everything was good, again like another reviewer mentioned, there's a strange American-like cheese on the quesadillas -- I believe it is "Chihuahua cheese" but I'm not certain. The bowl of spicy orange queso they bring out with the dish was much more satisfying. I enjoyed the sampler chimichanga so much I got them as a meal. And oh my god... I can't even begin to describe them. They were soft, yet crispy and flaky. They were topped with your typical fresh ingredients, including an "avocado salad" which was just fantastic. The combination of flaky fried tortilla, warm meat, and fresh cold chopped lettuce and avocado... everything I want from a damn Mexican eating experience!!! I HIGHLY recommend them. One highlight of the meal was the complimentary frijoles (refried beans) that accompanied both my partner and I's dishes. At one point he took a bite and then confusedly yet softly exclaimed that these are the best beans he'd ever had in his life... I couldn't help but laugh and agree. Delicious! Aside from all of that, the waitress was upbeat and friendly, and the service has never been quicker at any restaurant I've ever been to. Food was brought out within just a few minutes for both drinks, appetizer, and the meal. Plus, it's easy on the wallet, at around $10-15 per (large portioned) meal. I walked out extremely impressed, satisfied by my experience, and will definitely be coming back.

I've had Mexican food all over the USA and this ranks up there with the best. Service is great and the food is fantastic! Get your burrito fix here!

Not a 5 star restaurant but it was what we needed for the night which was a place for drinks and good food. The Anafre app was fantastic. The Enchildas platter (4 to a plate) was solid. Wait staff - very friendly. I would have liked quicker wait staff for drink refills rather than visiting the front bar but I would repeat.

My coworkers rave about La Tonalteca, so I finally went with them to check it out on Friday for lunch. When you first walk in, the colors are completely overwhelming - this place is WAY overdecorated. But that's not why we're really here, right? We were seated immediately in a moderately packed restaurant for a Friday afternoon. They came right over with chips and salsa, which were really good. One coworker decided to get the guac, which was super delicious. I was told the lunch specials were the way to go, so I went with Special Lunch #6 (one quesadilla, one enchilada with lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes). The food came out a few minutes later and I dug in....whoa. WHOA. This is what they had been raving about? The quesadilla tasted like it was made with American cheese. I'm no expert, but I could tell that something didn't taste right. The burrito wasn't any better - it was on the smaller size, with questionable meat, and lack of flavor. After the hype I heard about this place, I was really let down. Sadly, I will not be returning to this restaurant in the future! The lunch specials seem like a good deal, but it's really not worth it in the end.

Seriously a place where zombies live. Waiter wasn't responsive, food has declined seriously though. Their attitude pulled rating seriously down to 1 star. Their award winning ended on 2012. It's no wonder why 2 years has disappeared

Funny to sit in a restaurant by myself, but the this is treat since I probably would never get my partner to come in. I have always wanted to try authentic Mexican food and have been disappointed except for a dip I had at a home. I hope this will be a good experience. The decor is very cute. The food is really nice. I am no authority in Mexican food but my taste buds like this place and for 6.99 you get full bowel of fresh seafood. The seafood is indeed very fresh.

Very disappointed. I went here the other night with some friends. One of my friends asked for a hot salsa for the chips, we were told there was an extra fee for that but we could have as much of the other one we wanted and just add our own hot sauce then another friend ordered a pork taco. It came dried out pork... that's it. I ordered the chicken nachos. They were missing a main component. I asked for the manager and explains our concerns and even though she admitted that the taco looked bad she would not offer any refund or make any changes. Poor manager decision. (FYI - This review was actually from 2014, but for some reason was sitting in my file unfinished)

In the mood for something different for lunch, my coworkers and I opted to order takeout from Tonalteca. Having previously ordered the Speedy Gonzalez and realizing a crispy taco won't make the trek; I opted for the Burrito de Carnitas. I believe the description was pork slow roasted w/ 3 spices then covered w/ 3 sauces and pico. Rice & beans were included. My first bite was a rough chop jalapeno hidden in my rice which set my mouth ablaze. Luckily the server was kind enough to give us delicious fruity iced teas so I was able to recover and enjoy the meal. I do think the meal would be much improved w/ a cooling element such as sour cream or guacamole. For a lunch portion the meal was extremely filling and well priced at $7.99. My main gripe would be how stingy they are w/ the chips and salsa. It is stated in bold font on the menu that all takeout orders come w/ one salsa and bag of chips. I really think what is given should depend on the size of the order. For 3 people we were given a 3/4 full bag of chips and a teeny tiny container of salsa (enough for one person and not enough in comparison to the amount of chips given). I opted to purchase a second salsa for $.50 which worked out because one of my other coworkers did not want chips and salsa. The serving size given was really only enough for two, however both of us could have easily ate more. Will I go back? Yes but with so many other options for Mexican food in the area (places that aren't as salsa stingy!), it probably won't be for awhile.

The food was okay. I ordered enchiladas with spicy red sauce. I normally LOVE enchiladas, but these were not something I would order again. The chicken inside was dry and had no flavor to it. They also did not have any cheese on top even the enchilada verde (that my boyfriend ordered). Aren't enchiladas supposed to have cheese ?! For soft drinks, you have to pay per glass. No free refills.

Great food, reasonable prices. Whoever said you can't get good Mexican food on the east coast hasn't been here. Now yes, they advertise authentic Mexican, and yes, my dish didn't remind me of anything I had on Mexico, BUT the changes they made were ¡absolutamente sensacional!

Food was pretty good... but I got the fajitas and they give you 2 tiny tortillas for a big plate, there is no way you can make 2 fajitas out of this plate more like 4. But they expect you to pay 2 dollars more for 2 more tortillas. .. this is ridiculous!!! Margaritas are premixed and kinda weak. I will not be back until they get there crap together. Kinda a ripoff.

It was some of the best service I have encountered. They were very busy and everyone did their best to help each other. The food was very yummy., authentic, warming and well apportioned. I would return here with my family anytime. The salsa was delicious. The kids ate their dinners right up. I would recommend!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
