Claymont steaks are huge - I get the small and eat only half for a meal. I wish they had a smaller/cheaper size but they don't. I don't get the cheesesteaks that often cause they're so large. Though the buffalo chicken one really hits the spot. The burgers are very good - nice, soft bun. Tell them what you want on it. The fries are meh though. I've seen the salads and subs and they're huge like the steaks. My favorite item is actually their chili (when it's the soup of the day). For a few bucks, you get something the right size for a small-medium meal. Depending on factors I don't understand, the line could be long and/or the cook wait could be long, so I don't go there all that often. If you're eating with people though, there's a lot of nice seating inside and outside.

Everyone needs to remember it's a cheesesteak shop, not a steakhouse! The 4 stars are vs their peer group, not restaurants in general. The staff is friendly but it does tend to be slow, that being said the food is consistently good the BBQ chicken cheesesteak is fantastic...you won't find a better cheesesteak in Newark and the ones in Philly are not exactly known for their appearance and customer service! I'd pick Claymont over any steak I've had in Philly with the exception of Jim's. Only place Philly dominates is the rolls...very mediocre at Claymont and could use an upgrade.

I had a turkey sub that was disgusting, the turkey was slimy. And for the price you would think it would be fresh turkey, but it was sliced lunch meat. Their cheese steaks are better but the meat is piled on so high u can hardly taste the cheese. This place has lost my business, for being overpriced and lacking quality.

The cheesesteaks and strombolie if that's spelled right haha are so delicious! The portions are huge. Definitely recommend!

If your from out of town and want a decent cheese-steak without having to go into Philly, this is my go to place. The location is more ideal for college students since it is on the edge of campus and walking distance to main street. Easy for travelers to stop by, grab a cheese-steak and head back to the Embassy =) I had the chicken cheese-steak with mushrooms, cheese and jalepenos. Surprised the mushrooms and jalepenos were $1 extra each but regardless, still a great sandwich without the grease like Pxt's or Gxxo's. Couldn't decide between the 8, 10 or 12inch. Went with the 10, ate half for dinner and the other half for breakfast. May stop a second time before leaving DE, heading back to AZ.

Good cheesesteaks, nice rolls, not greasy. There was no blowout on the sandwich by the time I got to the second half, which is usually the norm when discussing an average cheesesteak. This place gets one star taken away for service. You order at the counter and seat yourself, waiting for your name to be called when the food is ready. This part is fine, it's a casual place. But the guy taking orders seemed like he hates his life. No smile or eye contact, and seemed bothered that I wanted to order a drink with my meal. Go for the food but don't expect friendly service.

. The first time we tried to come here it was 10:30 and it showed as open on yep but wasn't. No big deal there but slightly annoying. The next time we tried to come it was 9:20ish, there was people inside and the door was open but when asked what time they closed to try and find out, the girl said they weren't serving and closed at 9:30 even though the hidden hours by he door said 10. We finally decided to make a lunch time trip to try it since coming at night wasn't working and it was a disappointing experience. The steak is dry, bland and flavorless. About the only good thing was the bread. I was impressed with the management however, as she did seem very concerned with our previous visit when they should have been open.

Easily the best cheese steaks you can get in the area. Everything else on the menu is delicious as well. The sandwiches are huge and the appetizers are all great. The environment is perfect for a relaxed night out with friends and a few drinks. My only complaint would be the price. It is rather high and you always end up spending around 15 dollars for a meal. The food and service are all great though.

Sat outside since the weather was nice but I think the pros end there. I went with 4 others and we ordered the regular cheese steaks, white pizza and cheese sandwich. My cheese steak was rather hard to eat. All the toppings were overflowing from the top rather than in my hoagie. I guess I am just used to Genos/Pats in Philly that these didnt really compare in taste. My friend ordered the cheese sandwich which came on a hoagie and we felt it should have been the sandwich so the bread to cheese/veg ratio was rather large. They also forgot to put the mayo for her so they had to redo it. The white pizza was okay but was really oily. It took what felt like an hour for our food to come out. Unfortunately we wont be coming back.

I was in Newark for my brothers wedding and in search of a lunch. Great beers selection. For a sandwich shop. I looked over the big menu board. The place smelled great and looked clean. I ordered a 12 in claymont Added preferred toppings which included extra hots. The counter guy who previously went over the available beers, rattled of the 3 choices off hot peppers available to me. A few minutes later, my sandwich was done and I dug in. Big and meaty. I thought it had great flavor. They use a big soft roll. It did a nice job soaking up the drippings from a nice juicy sub. I saw a turkey sub on a table next to me. It was huge and the turkey was piled high. If I lived In Newark, this place would definitely be in my regular lunch rotation

Since I live within walking distance, Claymont Steak Shop has become my new favorite spot for take out. I've tried the cheese sub, Greek salad, and buffalo chicken cheesesteak. The cheese sub is delicious and the one item I keep buying over and over again, especially on days that I don't eat meat. Greek salad is also vegetarian, but for nearly $10 it is way overpriced for what you get. Barely any lettuce and the bowl they put it in is so shallow its practically a plate. It was pretty good but not sure if I will get it frequently. The Buffalo cheese steak was pretty good too. They also have a lot of other different types of food and desserts as well. The restaurant itself is spacious and very clean. Decor is nice. My only complaint are the random signs everywhere that say things such as, "no free water cups!", "extra sauce 30 cents extra!". It just doesn't look nice and makes the owner look very stingy, although I'm sure they're just trying to help out their staff. Sometimes parking can be tricky during the day, but its a breeze in the evenings. The location is great, too. Solid 4 star place.

Got delivery. Pizza tasted like it came from a bowling alley. Pepperoni calzone was really oily. Salad tasted salty even though I didn't use dressing. The cheesesteak had a lot of meat but no real flavor. Lame place.

My mom and I went for a late evening meal. I had a cheesesteak which was horrible. I grew up in DE but have since moved to CA so a cheesesteak is a treat...at Cappriotti's, not here. My mom had a grilled cheese sandwich which was edible but not great. There is no table service.

I went there with my husband 2 weeks ago. We order a 3 topping large pizza(special price like $12) and a jumbo cheesesteak. The pizza was good (i had sausage, bacon, onion) but the cheesesteak is AWFUL. Not enough cheese and the steak was VERY DRY!! No taste on the steak. I would recommand their pizza but NOT THE CHEESESTEAK.

I grew up in Claymont and the cheesesteaks here are just as good as the original! They also have supreme fries with cheddar, bacon, mozzarella and ranch. They should be called garbage fries because you feel like garbage after you eat them, but are they good!! We have only ordered for pick up, and the service has been great, but the parking can be difficult. The prices are much better than Primos which is outrageous, and we finally have some good cheesesteaks around here!!!

Mostly pretty good, but WARNING: Only Pepsi products here.

The upsides: 1. The sandwiches! The cheese steaks are great, hot oven grinders are always a sure bet, and the meatball stromboli? Yum. 2. Claymont is always a standby if we want something quick and tasty. And the pricing is decent. The only downsides: 1. The desserts - go back to the old tiramisu! It was so delicious! 2. If you call in an order, sometimes the fries and onion rings can get a bit soggy.

Overhyped cheesesteak place. I had a large cheesesteak. Meat was good quality, but not enough seasoning. Also NOT ENOUGH CHEESE. And even worse was the cheese was not melted into the meat enough. Slices of american cheese where you could still see remnants of the slices. And why no provolone option? It was not bad, but not a must eat either. Ideally, I would have rated this is a 2.5 Place looks clean. Never been to the original location. So my review is based on no sentiment or hype.

One more thing is that their subs are just average- they make the subs backwards- let me explain: instead of loading the meat and cheese first (inside the roll) the pack the meat and cheese LAST resulting in a massive meat and cheese wall that promptly falls out of the sub roll- making it nearly impossible to eat. They need to place the ingredients in the proper order to ensure a good sub eating experience. I'll agree that the Claymont location is much better than the Newark location. C'mon, CSS Newark... let's get it together.

Been here twice, and despite what some others say..both trips produced top notch steaks. My only "beef", was with the roll. I think the roll has room for improvement, especially with all the great Italian bakeries to choose from. This is a classic example of needing a 3.5 review for me, but I'll give the folks a bump today, cause they are 2 for 2 in my book. Service was fine and portions were generous.

Great customer service, kudos to Holly and Melissa ..... Cheese steaks are still one of the BEST but the rest of the menu deserves exploring

Joining the 3-star club on this one. Almost always order the turkey fiesta wrap on a pesto tortilla. Seems EVERYTHING is supersized here, so I can typically get two meals out of that. Sure enough, the service is almost always slow. Not sure why it takes so long to make a turkey sandwich, but it always does. It's a decent lunch place, but after that, the song runs out of lyrics.

Good but not the incredible wonderful best cheesesteak in DE. A veery good one mind you but not perfect. Perfect in Cheesesteak-land is reserved for those lucky few who get it all right every time. Bestt bread, most tender meat and overall taste. Claymont got two of three perfect in this case but just missed on the bread for me. A little too soft. Just a personal preference. Still this place near the U of D was clean, friendly and I highly recommend it. If you want perfect.....read my other reviews...

I believe this place was overpriced! The small cheesesteak was $7.95. I don't mind paying for a good cheesesteak, but it wasn't worth the money. I got the pepper cheesesteak which comes with green peppers and onions. I paid extra for mushrooms and had maybe a tablespoon of mushrooms on the whole thing. They used waaay too many onions. The onion flavor over rode all other flavors. The quality of the steak wasn't bad at all, but overall I was disappointed. I don't go for fries when i order out but I had some cheese fries and they were very good. That's the only reason I'm giving CSS 2 stars. They use thick steak fries and good cheese. I probably won't give this place another shot.

Food poisioning! We ate dinner here on Friday night. Have been to Claymont Steaks in Newark about 7 times prior. It took about 30 minutes to get our food. I think they forgot our order. Once we finally got our food the steaks were fresh and hot but the fries were cold. I requested new fries and a few minutes later got a fresh batch. My husband and brother in law both got very ill on Sunday. All the symptoms of food poisioning. I had a chicken steak and felt fine but they each had a steak sandwich and both got VERY very sick and both missed work today, Monday because of it.

CSS is by far, one of the best cheesesteaks I've had in Delaware. The meat from my last order was a little dry, but still tasty. Most of the places in DE tend to make a very bland, or overly salty product, but not CSS. They employees are also very friendly. the last visit they were all smiles and singing, which put a smile on my face on a day when I was not really in a good mood. One of the owners said to me, "you must think we're crazy the way we're carrying on!" and I said, "heck no! I think you guys are great." And they are :-)

Really great cheese steaks, they maintain a clean restaurant and have ample seating (there's beer on tap too).

Just got back from getting a cheese steak. It ain't Abners but it is darn good. Excellent fillings etc, the only downer was the rolls and I cured that problem by asking them to toast the roll.? I keep going back to the Newark DE one

They have all the right ingredients for a great little lunch place but they fail in a few too many places. The steaks are great quality, especially in the expensive beef market these days, they haven't substituted for steak-ums like other cheap joints. You get toppings, different kinds of cheese... however it's a very plain tasting cheese steak. Now I know cheese steaks, I lived in Philly for 8 years. The secret to a great steak is seasoning the meat, which they just... didn't. So it was bland. Big portions, big menu and that's why they charge big prices. $7 for a small cheese steak (10"). It's a shame because this place is huge inside, all kinds of seating, comfortable layout, there is even a huge table that seats 8-10 in the back, perfect for lunch meetings. I really like the look and feel, just not the product.

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews. I love this place. The owner and employees are all very friendly, and I find the food to be consistently fresh and reasonably priced considering the generous portions. I've even had one of the same exact items that the one reviewer talks about--the Tuna hoagie. It is big, and with lots of tuna, but I liked this as I felt I got my money's worth (saved half for later!). I've found the hoagies here to be very simple, but the ingredients are consistently fresh, and that makes it for me. My only point of improvement on the subs would be to suggest for them to offer whole-wheat buns, and, if they really want to go all-out California-style, offer avocado and sprouts as options for toppings. I also have had the soups here, and I really like them. I especially like the crab soup. The selection on the menu is interesting...it's hard to classify this place...it's more than just a cheesesteak / sub shop, but less than a typical diner; I'd put it somewhere in between. The atmosphere is also interesting. It's a bit cold, it has a very "masculine" feel to it too (if that makes any sense?) but I find it very pleasant. It's spacious, has a nice view of the street, plenty of outdoor seating, and is conveniently located and even has off-street parking. My one suggestion for improvement is that I don't like all the disposable containers and silverware...not the most sustainable choice. I'd pay a few more cents for being served on an actual plate. I think it would improve the ambiance and class of this place as well as reduce the amount of waste generated here. This place already looks a little bit too classy and nice to be an all-disposable-plates restaurant, and it's a bit incongruous.

Really disappointed. I'm a big fan of the original Claymont Steak Shop .. in Claymont, but this place is fodder for the college masses. Inside there is a lot of space, and everything looks new and shiny. You still get large portion sizes for your cheese-steaks, but they are completely bastardized. I rarely ever have trouble finishes a sandwich but a third of the way into one of theirs and I start contemplating what I'm doing with my life, and feel really troubled. They are dry, without substance or soul. The original Claymont Steaks hold their own against most of their Philly counterparts, but this place might be better for a salad or something. SMH

Way-too-big portions, NO flavor! Some people might like huge portions but what is the point when the taste is lacking? The tuna hoagie I had was impossible to eat until I removed half the tuna. The tomato pieces were huge chunks, not nice think slices. My husband got a stromboli and he said it had no flavor. I tasted it and it was OK, but he's right -- not any taste to write home about!

My family was in town for the holidays. I've lived in DE for over s year now and so I took them up to Pats and Gino's as we went around Philly buy none of us were impressed. We were still looking for a great cheesesteak and boy did we find it. The huge juicy cheesesteak piled high was fantastic! The perfect combination of cheesy and juicy. The place was clean and the, booths very comfortable. Even the Fountain drinks tasted fresh. We had such a good experience, my parents wanted to stop by the Claymont location on the way to the airport. Perfect!
