I heard about this several months when a local radio station was doing a call in contest for the best crab cakes, and Gilligans kept coming up. My husband is not a big crab fan so this wasn't a top priority but finally decided to eat there Sunday as we happened to be running errands up that way. Oh my goodness!!!! The crab cake was fantastic! Huge, no fillers, lightly toasted outside - wonderful! My husband ordered it too and actually said that he guessed he wasn't a crab cake fan before because he had never had one done correctly! He loved it! But bad news- they are going to be leaving their lovely waterfront location in late October due to a lease issue.. I hear its possible that they may just close. If you can, go now. It's really worth it.

It took 45 minutes to get chicken salad, Caesar salad and 2 simple sandwiches. Sat outside and watched another table after us get their food first. Tables were covered in rain water and hostess didn't think to bring a towel to wipe off before we sat down. And the food was lame. Just had to take a Pepcid for the over-oniony and over-mayonnaised chicken salad. Oh- and my son got the runs from the turkey sandwich. Definitely not going back.

You certainly can't beat the view, ambiance or location. On the other hand, the food is rather bland, unremarkable and expensive for the area. Go with some friends on a Summer's eve for drinks dockside at twilight, but that's about all I'd return for. PS: If you go, don't get suckered in for the crab cakes, not worth the hype.

We called ahead and were delighted to learn we could bring our dog. They gave us a very nice table toward the back of the deck under a tree with a great view of the canal. The servers were very friendly to our dog bringing him water and treats. My wife had the salmon and I had the risotto with shrimp. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, the service, and the view of the canal. We'll definitely return this summer!

This is a very small place so get there early if you want a seat outside at the bar overlooking the canal and boats going by. Decent HH prices. Nice breeze at all times. Mostly locals but us visitors were able to mix in quite well. No draft beer, only bottles.

Best view, best food, best service. I have only one complaint! Cheryl closes from October 26th through March 27th! Thank you for a wonderful season of great food, great people and the greatest atmosphere! We will be here on the 28th of March 2015!

Cute location, friendly attentive staff, but the food was bland and boring. Tried the mussels, meh. Crab cake, just ok. Essentially glorified diner food with a scenic view. I would go back if I had to, but I'd probably try someplace else first.

I'm giving 5 stars for atmosphere. I'm giving 1 star for food - granted, it was only a simple appetizer and a mixed drink, but these things made that bad of an impression. First, the pros: really, really pleasant waterfront deck. I love the main streets and the beach of Lewes, but had never really dined on the canal. Sitting on Gilligan's deck turned out to be every bit as charming as the other things I love about Lewes. The deck was well positioned, clean, comfortable, nicely decorated while still seeming like a casual porch overlooking a marina, and my husband and I really enjoyed sitting out there. The service was friendly and attentive. Big plus there, as we've found the service at otherwise great Lewes restaurants like Half Full and Agave to be curt and unfriendly. This older lady was very warm and accomodating. We did not have entrees, but a table next to us got crabcakes, which looked and smelled great. We had heard that Gilligan's are known for their crabcakes. It is possible that the kitchen puts all of their focus on the crabcakes, however, because the rest of our experience gave me the impression that this is a restaurant that is now just coasting on the merits of their beautiful outdoor deck (and maybe the crab cakes). Cons: I had the special drink of the day, a watermelon martini (don't judge me, it was just the kind of day for a frou frou drink). And it tasted positively rancid. Like there was rancid cooking oil in it - I'm thinking some kind of old watermelon mixer was used instead of fresh. We weren't hungry at all but felt like lingering on the deck, enjoying the breeze and the view of people going by in their sailboats, so I ordered something simple and not-too-filling from the appetizers menu - pretzels with dip. Long story short, this overpriced (at $7 or $8) appetizer was a microwaved Super Pretzel, the kind you would buy in a box at a supermarket. Not only that, it had obviously been frozen for quite some time, and then over-microwaved, so that it was shriveled and tough. It came with a pale orange dip that had the consistency and taste of something that had been sitting in the fridge for a while. I only had one bite of that, but my husband ate a lot of it. And felt sick later. I can't say if it was that, but I'd say it was a good likelihood. That said, I will definitely go back next summer - the atmosphere was too magical for me to stay away - but in the future I'm only going to order beer. Oh, and maybe the crabcakes.

Hard to know how to rate. We are semi-regulars. Crab cakes are phenomenal (99 year old aunt proclaimed them the best she's ever had). Salmon (I get it blackened) on caesar salad is also delish. Asparagus salad is perfectly crisp and accompanied (tomato relish). Fries are a crispy, table sharing bargain. Deck seating by the canal is idyllic. Yesterday, however, my husband had three small pieces of glass in his first mouthful of cole slaw. The server was appropriately horrified and responsive (apologized profusely, removed his plate, showed the glass pieces to the kitchen, and reported that the kitchen batch of coleslaw was thrown out). Problems (besides the obvious question of how this happened in the first place): 1. The replacement dish included cole slaw (even the server told the kitchen, "He's not going to want that again") 2. No manager ever approached us to apologize. 3. The bill arrived with no adjustment for this appalling incident. I said to my husband, "They missed their chance (to make a bad situation a little better)" We will probably be back someday, but not until the memory of the wonderful crabcakes is stronger than the memory of the broken glass.

Crab cakes!! The first time that I went there, I was outside looking at the menu that was posted at the entrance to see if I wanted to come back later that evening for dinner. A woman entering the restaurant asked me if I've been here before. After I said "no", she raved about the crab cakes. I thought, OK, I'll keep it in mind. Later that day, I returned and while waiting in line for the hostess, I overheard 2 women asking the hostess if they still have the crab cakes or if they ran out, because that's all they came for! So, it was then that I knew I had to try these incredible crab cakes. I had gazpacho soup to start, which was fabulous, then a crab cake with a side of greens and a light vinaigrette. The crab cake was huge and all lump meat with the perfect amount of seasoning, flash fried, no bread. It truly was an amazing crab cake. I hope this restaurant doesn't change the portion or the way they make these. It was $16.00 for 1 cake and the greens, which was a great price to pay for such a delicious meal. There's an outside bar and dining area as well as inside. It's not an easy to find place. So, if you are in Lewes without a GPS, I would stop and ask.

The crab cakes are the best in the area, an order of fries with dinner are enough for three people. They have an expanded menu for 2012 and the outside view is the best in Lewes. Happy Hour daily in the outside bar 5-7. Service is also good.

Asked a couple on the way out about the food. Said they left because they got tired of waiting. Went inside anyway and overheard a customer that was already seated complaining to the host about the long wait (there were several empty tables). The response was that it was a difficult time of the year to maintain staffing levels and that they would be serviced ASAP. I left.

My husband and I were lured by the canal-side setting and the promise of crab cakes. We ended up sitting inside because there weren't any tables in the shade outside. I had a view right into the busy kitchen and of the small bar--where the college-aged hostess was making eyes at and idly chatting with the bartender. (I now know his life story.) The decor is a bit frumpy - wood panelling, mauve touches. Maybe needless to say, I felt a bit short-changed not sitting outside. My husband was a huge fan of the softball-sized crab cake (8 ounces), which he had on greens. I really liked my fish and chips - tender cod, gently fried. (The coleslaw was subpar). Unfortunately it took a REALLY long time to get out food and our waiter (I'm thinking a college sophomore) abandoned us at some point early on - leaving us guessing if our order had been forgotten. Just when we were going to ask, it showed up. We definitely brought the average age down (excluding the waitstaff) and the menu is a bit outdated and sometimes strange (there was a something called a white crab tandoori tart on the menu). But we stuck to the basics and had a great meal--foodwise--as a result. I think that I just need to get over the service thing - good service is pretty rare in this town!!

Short on atmosphere and dated interior but friendly staff and great setting next to the water. Food is marginal but edible. Second time I've eaten there and though its a B-, I would go back because of where they are situated. Surprising that there are not more waterfront places in Lewes.

All indications are that this place will be good. It was recommended by a shopkeeper here. Then, even using GPS we couldn't find it at first. It is tucked in a very confusing little corner. But once found, pleasant enough way to spend an.afternoon. I always enjoy getting tips from locals.

Chose this place because it was located on the water and heard that the food was good. Overall, disappointed with the quality of the food for its price point. I wasn't impressed with their so-called famous crab cakes, although true to the advertisement of being all lump meat with no filler, it definitely lacked flavor! The cole slaw that came with the crab cake was old and tasted like it had picked up other flavors from their cooler. My husband ordered Crab Mac n Cheese which was horribly bland. The seating inside had older iron back chairs that were not comfortable for indoor seating..

Enjoyed most of our meals except for the hair in the Mac and cheese.

Crab cake was great. Everything else was underwhelming. The shrimp tacos came out with nothing but shrimp and sauce on a tortilla. The chicken salad didnt seem to be mixed with any dressing at all. Very small salad with the crab cake. I would not go back.

Crab cakes are fried and have something in them that repeats on many people. There are too many other restaurants that serve great lump meat crab cakes to go here. Other food is just mediocre too. Salads with bottle dressing, nothing original except crap cakes. Yuk. Location is great on the water.

Food was pretty good, The Nacho fries and the Salmon were both very good. This places is awesome mostly because of its location and ambiance. Its very romantic facing the water. Service is great, very friendly and accommodating. If I m in Lewes again I will def come back here for dinner.

Love this place! Fries with crab meat, Gouda cheese and a perfect amount of Old Bay. Great Maryland Crab soup. Asian chicken salad and a Caesar salad with Salmon were perfect. Attentive friendly service and very reasonable. Very good and very fresh house made iced tea too. Nice views too. One drawback was the flies outside loved our food too.

    1. Crab and fries good - appetizer 2. Crab good but doesn't live up to the hype 3. Risotto not good -eat something else 4. Waffles and chicken - waffles good but literally received two different types of chicken on the plate. Seriously, if you get to the end of the bag and switch frozen chicken vendors then throw away the end of the last bag. Or how about not serving frozen chicken. 5. Soup - excellent 6. Bathrooms - small and gross, maybe clean them every once in a while. Makes you wonder about the kitchen. 7. Outdoor atmosphere is very nice - inside not so much

The food was blah, stuff you could get at a cheap chain restaurant like Applebee's, but also fine for what it was. That said, the view is extremely nice. I'd just get a drink, enjoy the sunset, and go elsewhere for interesting food.

Cute little waterfront restaurant on the marina in Lewes. Loved the outdoor seating area and the view was beautiful. The place itself is a little underwhelming and so is the menu. We came here because one of the hotel workers said that this place had the best crab cakes you'll ever taste. I would've given the place 3 stars but had to add one because the crab cakes were in fact delicious and well worth the trip!

Went there today, Thursday 8.20.15, with a group of 4, told the hostess and she said that she cannot sit us because the wait staff was busy, so we waited by the bar and saw that there must of been 8 open tables outside where we wanted to sit. I asked can we just go sit down until a waitress is available, she gave us a dirty look, then took us out to the table and threw the menus down on the table to show her anger, I guess because we asked to sit down rather than stand in the middle of the restaurant while people were eating, I figured fuck it, and we left. There are plenty of other places to eat in Lewes, she was rude!!
