Hot Lover Roll is the best! Always fresh and prepared beautifully. Must have in Dover.

The food was bland & uneventful. Did not enjoy & will not return. The food was edible but nothing to say was excellent. Sushi was not the most fresh in the Dover area. I highly recommend going to a different Sushi restaurant if you have had excellent Sushi in other areas in the world.

Went on a girls night and was VERY impressed with sushi quality. The vein was removed and showed they took care in prepping the sushi shrimp which I appreciate in a sushi place. Although, the service was slow, and the waiter took the menu from my hand right after ordering my second roll after I told him I wanted to keep it in case there was another roll I wanted to order. Definitely irritated me because thats what you there for.. to order food!! Other than that, would highly recommend!

The restaurant itself is really cute inside, and the servers are all friendly. I don't eat fish, but I love sweet potato rolls, they are good here, but I prefer the rice on the outside of the seaweed, but that's just me being picky. They have chicken pad thai on their menu which I was excited to order, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment upon tasting it. The thing that makes pad thai stand out is the sauce, and unfortunately, this sauce fell very short. I took a few bites and could not stomach the taste. I thought maybe it was just me, but another friend that was there with us ordered the same thing and felt the same way.

I drove to Rice from Virginia on the recommendation of a friend. It was Christmas day, I my family was traveling, so I decided against sitting around the house and for a quick road trip. I admit I'm a bit of a foodie, so this kind of drive for dinner at one restaurant is something fairly routine for me, but could give others weak knees. My first thought when my friend told me it was really good was "How good can a shopping mall chinese joint really be? They're all the same." Was I ever wrong. I got the General Tso's Chicken. While its a bit of a cliche, and most foodies will laugh me off Yelp when they see that's what I ordered, I dare say that was the best order of General Tso's I've EVER had. Beyond the General Tso's, I also got Pork Eggrolls, Chicken Fried Rice, and my dining companion got a similarly wide variety of food. While I can't speak for what he had, he agreed that his food was responsible for pushing the bar up just a notch for what he expects the next time he goes for Chinese. The only reason for four stars rather than five is my Chicken fried rice. While I'm not really a fan of traditionally greasy Shopping Mall Chinese food, the chicken used in the fried rice, and the fried rice itself were both a bit too dry for my liking. Beyond that I'd have no qualms returning...even if it did mean another five hour round trip.

Cute little place in west Dover. Far as I know it's the best sushi in town. Not sure about other menu items but I hear they're good. Check it out.

This is my go-to place for Chinese food or Sushi in Dover. During the blizzard of 2010, I walked a half mile in the snow (the roads weren't plowed and I lived nearby) to get some sesame chicken; they were open, and that was incredible to me. They also had a sushi roll that had Pringles on it, and some banana sauce drizzled on it. Why not? If I remember right their egg roll orders are one apiece, so if you are used to getting two in a single order, make sure to specify.

My husband and I have only tried this place once. However, we had such a great first impression of this place that we will be back again. I had the fried bean curd with garlic sauce, while he tried the Szechuan chicken. Both dishes were very tasty and the vegetables were cooked just right. As for the atmosphere, for a smaller place, it was clean and the staff was very friendly.

We ate lunch here during a weekday. Small, but a nice atmosphere. Service was right on spot, menu was large with average pricing, miso soup was delicious, but.... The rolls were completely bland. I ordered a simple spicy tuna and it wasn't even recognizable as a spicy tuna roll. It tasted like mostly rice and seaweed even though I could see that tuna was used. I was surprised. I also ordered a Boston roll. That too tasted the same.... No flavor. My husband's 2 rolls were yet the same, and his were two veggi rolls. I can only recommend this restaurant if you were to try the Chinese food offered, as the sushi was forgettable, sadly.

Best Pad Thai Ever!!! It was clean, not greasy, spicy and sweet all in one! I loved the fried egg in it, and the Shrimp portion was huge!!! I could barely finish everything! Great potstickers too! Tender, delicate and filled with fresh things! The service was quick, and prompt loved it! Also the prices are very reasonable on all aspects of Asian food. My Spider roll (soft shell crab roll) only had 6 pieces and was a tad bit small, but it was decent for $7.50. We'll be back!

Excellent service and delicious high quality sushi and sashimi! Was with 8 friends, we got a variety of dishes. The server was friendly and knowledgable and service was quick and not intrusive, good timing. I got the sashimi platter, the fish was buttery creamy excellent textures and edamame good. Best roll was the tiger roll, everyone's favorite. Danny was a good server, even recommended some food that people liked, adding a whole peanut to some veggie rolls, mixing saki with other stuff. Delicious!

I love Rice, been going here every since they open. Their Broccoli and chicken has this amazing sauce that I love! The prices are a little more pricey than other Chinese/Japanese food places.

  • Kim R.

I used to love rice. But we just got dinner from there and my orange chicken was stringy and I couldn't chew it. It really grossed me out. I hope it's not on the decline. Just fair warning!

I found this place on yelp during a work trip, and my boss was very happy I did. I had sushi which was delicious, my boss had the bento box, and my coworker had Chinese combo. Everyone was extremely happy with their meals and the portions were perfect. Service was quick and the place got pretty packed quickly. good find! Thanks yelp :)

Great sushi and lunch specials for eat in or carry out! The eel avocado and hot lover rolls are my favorite.

  • Sch-Rae A.

The food was horrible. We love sushi however we were completely disappointed with this place. The sushi rolls were not wrapped tight which made them fall apart. The beef teriyaki was watery and tasteless. My wife shrimp was tasteless. The food took forever to come out. We will not be back.

I'm a fan. Everything we've gotten here has been really good and fresh. Rice does not disappoint.

We went on Christmas after a movie and had a blast! The servers were working very hard and the small restaurant was VERY BUSY. We shared several chinese dishes and enjoyed it all. Looking forward to going back again soon.

  • Joshua D.

Love this place. Never have I had anything that wasn't good from the sushi to the traditional Chinese food dishes. It is a smaller place that could be easily overlooked but it is worth seeking out. The staff is always very friendly. Can get cramped during the busier lunch and dinner hours but they do offer carry out.

  • Val B.

My family is visiting from out of town. There are 7 of us total, ranging in age from 2 to 73. Needless to say, there were a couple of cautious members in the group who claim to be grossed out by sushi. (Umm...yeah, I don't get that, either.) I quickly reminded them there's more than sushi here...a lot more! We didn't make a reservation but, despite a good crowd of patrons, we were seated within 10 minutes. Everyone seemed pleased with their dinners. The beef rolls with scallions inside was a great appetizer! Bathrooms we're clean. Just wish they would have had something -- anything -- for the 2yo to eat.

  • Michelle L.

Decent Chinese food and sushi. You certainly wouldn't expect this in an older strip mall. Service was very good and they even made a special order for me. Just a suggestion....expand into the vacant space next door so they have more seating.

We've gone to Rice about twice a month since discovering them a year or two ago, and we live in the DC area. Their sushi is outstanding. I highly recommend the Mango Paradise roll - it's like a dessert. I also love their egg drop soup. I am not as big a fan of most of their Chinese or Thai dishes - they're not bad but I've had better. But their sushi is where it's at. I literally crave and dream about it. Their staff is very friendly and efficient. It's a tiny dining room, only about a dozen tables and a few seats at the sushi bar. I wish they would expand into the empty space next door. Having said that, we've lucked out and never had to wait. Tip - their hot tea is free and their soft drinks are by the can, so no free refills.

I love Rice! Use to order here almost everyday after work. Moved to a different state now but when I come back to DE a trip here is a must. Sushi is amazing!

  • Amanda S.

Amazing! One of the best restaurants in Dover. Good sushi and the rest of the food I'd great too. Highly recommend. The restaurant is small, so keep in mind if you have a crowd.

I'm new to the world of sushi but I'm on a kick now and several sushi veterans said this place was great. VERDICT...it's awesome. The shrimp tempura Is to die for!

  • Donna J.

Great variety of sushi, tempura, and Chinese dishes. I'm a big fan of their shrimp fried rice!

    (4)
  • Amanda C.

The food tasted fresh. I didn't care for the general tso chicken. I've had better. This is the first time eating here. If I had a choice I would try somewhere new before going back. The prices were a little high for the quality. For 4.50 I got 2 spring rolls, they were small and for that price I've gotten more at other places.

Absolutely love Rice. Always a pleasant experience here- friendly staff, amazing food.

Stopped here on the way home from the beach and it was well worth the detour. Had shrimp and broccoli and some sushi. Great flavor and place was clean. We will return. Thanks.

I think tonight was the first time I ever had dinner at Rice, after all these years of eating their lunch specials. We were trying to get sushi but avoid the NASCAR traffic out on the highway, so Rice won. It was a little crowded when we got there, but the wait was short (less than 10 minutes) and the food was good, although it's a lot more expensive at dinner time. Mochi for dessert was so yummy.

  • Sharon B.

I have loved Rice since the first time we stumbled upon it several years ago when no one knew about it and you almost had the restaurant to yourself! In our town we have an abundance of fast food/chain type restaurants, more known for the quantity of food rather than the quality. At first taste, I realized this was different, everything was fresh and flavor-filled, not overdone. The interior is quite small, maybe 15 tables with also seating for about six at the sushi bar which is front and center. The seating is very tight and the room small so this is probably why other reviewers do not recommend it for small children. Take out service is good too, had it last night, all packed well.

  • Dara S.

Not fab but not terrible, either. We had edamame (good) and a lackluster noodle dish. It's been a few weeks since we dined there and I don't remember what else we ate (not a good sign, but not a bad one, either).

    (3)
  • Jonathan L.

Decent sushi, Asian restaurant should stick to one region of food. I mean Japanese, Chinese and Thai is all nice but you can't possibly do it all well.

Certainly amongst the best sushi Dover has to offer, Rice is the de facto sushi restaurant for the city. Understated, elegant, and underpopulated when we visited, it was easy to grab a table for dinner. For an appetizer, I decided to throw caution to the wind and order a special, the curiously-named "rock tuna." I was not aware such a variety of tuna existed, and turns out I was correct, because the resulting dish was actually a very ornate version of fried tuna meatballs. Definitely good by meatball standards, though it's not really what I'm looking for in a sushi restaurant. I did end up grabbing a pair of tuna nigiri that was as good as I was expecting it to be, my main course was an udon noodle dish that hit the spot darn well. It's easy to see why noodle dishes are so popular in Japan - the warm, complex broths, and the slurping... so much slurping... One of my dining compatriots mentioned his disappointment that the tuna in his crazy roll was diced rather than whole, and I admit that that is a kinda lame stunt for a sushi place to pull, though I didn't taste it nor do I know the circumstances surrounding the roll. Regardless, there's no doubt Rice is definitely near the top of places to visit if you're in Dover for a week or two.

vegetables, brown rice, a speck of sushi. a good friend came up on christmas day and rice was open. now he knows his asian food (and asian dudes but thats a whole different story). we went with a certain level of skepticism seeing as dover delaware isn't exactly the hub of asian cuisine but man were we in for a treat. my food was awesome, and he totally killed the general chicken and an order of pork something or other. i live in north de but work in lower slower so rice is on my way home from work. i see myself as a regular here. no questions about it....

    (4)
  • Stephanie H.

I have had decent food here before, but today's experience was not good. Rice is not worth the money. It's expensive for the area and everything tastes the same. I'm very disappointed in my $53 of dinner. It's just not a good value.

  • Renee S.

Rice should be named Crunch because almost every roll we had, and we had a lot of rolls, nine in total, all had tempura crunchies in them. I ordered my "go-to" spicy tuna and it had crunchies in it - the crunchies overpowered the tuna unfortunately. I also tasted the rainbow roll and the spider roll, both were good, both had crunchies. Crunch, ahem, excuse me, Rice is good, and the locals seem to think so as well. 730 PM on Sunday the place was packed. For those that aren't of the sushi persuasion, Rice has other menu options like regular Chinese food. We had one of those non-sushi eaters among us, he ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork. It was deep fried and the sweet and sour sauce was in a dipping dish in the middle. Rice may be located in a nondescript strip mall circa 1987 and put crunchies in almost everything sushi wise, but it's still good nonetheless.

Ordered "to-go" because of the weather but good thing because the restaurant was PACKED for those "dining in" the shrimp and broccoli was AMAZING as well as the Chicken lo mein. My boyfriend loved his general tsos chicken but expected a little more from the shrimp fried rice. Overall thoroughly pleased and will definitely be going back if we ever travel here again.

First time visiting after hearing so much about this place. I dined in for lunch and was very hungry. First thing I noticed was how small yet quaint the place was. It was very clean and contemporary as well, but if they were to get a rush you might have to wait on a table. That was not the case for me however, I was fortunate enough to be seated immediately. The staff was prompt and attentive and took our orders right away. I love Rolls that have spicy tuna Avocado and spicy mayo and the Romantic roll fit the bill perfectly. Bit awkward name considering I was dining with a buddy and not feeling the least bit romantic. Being as hungry as I was, I also ordered a lunch special consisting of fried rice and a chinese beef and vegetable dish. I also ordered a miso soup. So here's my opinion. The miso soup was a bit bland, it was fresh and hot yet it lacked depth. It almost tasted like an onion soup that Japanese steak houses serve yet still bland. The fried rice was not good at all, the rice felt hard as if it were under cooked. The beef and vegetables were decent if you like Chinese take out style dishes where they give you ginormous chunks of bell peppers and other veggies that are bigger than the meat, the taste was decent. Now the sushi which is what the place is famous for, and rightfully so. The roll was very large and I really didn't need to order the extra dish (and wish I hadn't). The fish was fresh, It has the perfect blend of spice, sweetness, and creaminess from the mayo. It was outstanding and I will definitely only order the sushi the next time I go. I definitely will go back

Miso soup was watered down. Had to wait a bit for our drink order. Sushi was average. They should stick to chinese cuisine.

    (2)
  • An T.

BLAND BLAND BLAND. Service was the only thing here that I'd commend. Food was so unbelievably bland and disappointing. Ginger wasn't fresh, and it looked like it was turning bad. No low-sodium soy sauce. Miso-soup tasted instant-made. The salad dressing was bland. The wrapper around all our sushi kept peeling, and our rolls were being undone, right in front of our eyes. Rice with Teriyaki-this and Teriyaki-that were not worth it. The chinese food is completely overpriced, and you can get the same dishes at any other typical carry-out. Save your money and go else where for quality food!

I drive to try/get food and that's actually what I did for Rice. Delaware state patrol can't stop me from my curiosity and hunger to drive to Rice. Rice is an Asian fusion of Chinese and Japanese food. You have an option to get white or brown rice even in your sushi rolls and sashimi. It's clean and the staff is catering. The facility is small, nicely decorated in an intimate settings, perfect for couples on a date or few friends.

Was in town for business, I would usually drive away from a place advertised as "Chinese & Japanese restaurant" but this place was recommended by a co-worker for having good sushi so I had to give it a try. Dining area has 10-12 tables and is rather small. The sushi bar seats 6-8 people and unlike most sushi places isn't the best seat in the house. Young polite staff, service was friendly and sushi chef rather shy and not chatty. Menu is kept simple, they have all the popular rolls, sashimi and a few "specialities". Having tried other places around town, I think it was good sushi, but wasn't too impressed with the size of the rolls. 24 pieces, miso soup and a Sapporo will cost you $26 if your date doesn't show up

As the other reviews read, Rice is a small restaurant, not easy to find, but worth the trip if you are looking for high quality Japanese food. The service here was very attentive, with no waiting of any kind. The server was always available. The first thing I had was "Gyosa" which is Japanese dumplings filled with pork. They were tasty and with more meat than wrapper. The wrapper was very thin, so it did not take away from the taste of the pork. Good sauce to dip. The miso soup was good also, perhaps average, and the salad was scarce but good. I had a sushi roll called the "Dover roll", which has spicy tuna, eel and cream cheese wrapped with seaweed and rice, all of which is then deep fried. Deep fried rolls are good. For the main meal I had Teriyaki shrimp. The sauce was mixed with fried sautéed onions which made that sauce very tasty and enjoyable. I added the sauce to the rice and vegetables to create a nice mix of flavors. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to those looking for some great service and food.

This place is amazing. Not only is their sushi delicious, it's beautiful! My friends recommended this place, and I'm sure glad they did! Their specialty rolls are not all Americanized--they have somewhat authentic rolls, too! The fish was fresh, and the service was friendly. Can't ask much more than that!

Tucked away in a strip mall, next to a Rite Aid, you'll find one of the few good restaurants (if not the best) in Dover. There's not a lot to choose from in this small town, but be glad that Rice is one of those options. The restaurant itself makes you forget that you're in an unassuming strip mall in Dover, Delaware. The space is laid out well, you're not bothered by the incoming crowd and the interior finishes provide a peaceful dining atmosphere. It's a small space, so large groups would be difficult to fit and you probably want to find a sitter for the kids. The food is very fresh and very flavorful. The rolls are masterfully prepared and the service is always friendly and professional. There when you need them, not there when you don't. You can't go wrong with any of the menu items - Chinese or Japanese, hot or cold. They're all very good! The lunch specials cannot be beat. Out of a number of rolls, you can do a "Pick Two" or "Pick Three" lunch for $7 and $10 respectively.

sushi's alright, Chinese food good. they speak Chinese, and for spicy they used Thai chili pepper so it actually has a good spice flavor. a little pricey for Chinese food but it was tasty.. atmosphere is nice and service was as well. they were closing and still didnt rush us.

Sushi at Rice is always fresh and delicious. Try anything, you won't be disappointed. The price is not bad and is actually cheaper than a lot of sushi places that are serving quality sushi.

I loved the ambiance of this place! Although the place was small, it was still very nice. I feel like this is a hidden gem because it is so small. The sushi was very good for sure. I had the Mongolian beef and let me tell you, it was one of the most delicious plate I've had. The beef was very tender and the sauce was delicious. My boyfriend and I went out here for dinner after seeing the reviews on Yelp and I am not disappointed. Also, the price is very reasonable! Our dinner was only about $20 and it filled us up. I would definitely go here again if I ever come to Dover!

Just went here for the first time last week for lunch. They serve Chinese and Japanese - I went for Japanese and my 2 dining companions went for Chinese. Every. single. thing. we all ordered was delicious! Be aware that they get pretty busy during weekday lunches!

  • Jocelyn R.

The atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing. You wouldn't imagine that it is in the middle of a busy shopping center! The food is fresh and delicious. I am especially fond of the fried shumai! Service is fast and attentive. Call at least 20 mins prior for a pick up order though to avoid waiting. They are busy!

Good place, bad name. The worst thing at rice is the rice. Always tastes like it has been in a rice cooker for half the day.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
