This was such a great find after a client meeting! They have a lunch express menu from which I got a fajita express and my coworker got enchiladas for about $8 per dish. It was a good amount of food and so so tasty! Service was great and quick. The place has a great atmosphere and the chips were warm which we loved and the salsa a bit spicy which we loved also. Overall a great experience and I will visit for lunch whenever i'm in town!

Honestly I don't understand all the great reviews. The chips and salsa are fine. We had the Hawaiian fajitas and I was very unimpressed. Probably a quarter of a chicken breast and three shrimp in there. three tiny pieces of pineapple. I had the distinct impression that the pineapple shell on my plate had been used for many other dinners prior to the one that I got. There were a few onions and a few peppers. The beef quesadilla from the à la cart menu was just OK. The taco from the children's menu was good. Flour tortillas were tasteless. Honestly just drive right by this place unless you're desperate.

I stopped here with a large group of coworkers after arriving in town for a few days of work. We were excited after seeing great reviews online, but somewhat disappointed with the meal afterwards. That said, it was our 2nd best meal in town. Guacamole was very watery - as if they actually added water to extend it. Bizarre. The queso however was delicious - a creamy, white cheese. Mmmmmmm. Definitely a highlight of the night. Most of us ordered fajitas which were a little bit over salted and over cooked. Rest of the group's entrees were fine. If you're from a major city and accustomed to eating out a lot it may be a bit of a disappointment, but this is likely one of the better meals you'll have in Dover.

Good Food and Excellent Service Mi Esposa and I enjoyed dinner, I had the Steak Mexicana, very well seasoned and filling , the appetizers were very good! We were treated very well by our server MEMO pronounced Mehmo. He knows the menu, and its always good when your server say "VERY GOOD CHOICE" after you choose your entree. He is attentive and treated us like family! Ignore the reviews about about "the decor" The food and the service, and prices MORE THAN makes up for it! Stop in and see MEMO ! If you can't make up your mind, as him for a suggestion.

I have been here twice and was not impressed at all. The salsa is like pace salsa the blain flavoring, the chips were alright though. Then came to the meal, first time I had pollo tacos which were like nothing good. The sour cream was really grainy and nasty. The beans and rice were like stuff you get at taco bell that makes an alright rice bean ball. I then had the enchiladas which were nasty. I am from California and know good Mexican food and this place comes no where close to it sadly.

You never know what to are going to get when you pull into a Mexican Restaurant in a city you've never visited before. Sometimes you are disappointed and other times you are pleasantly surprised. This restaurant proved to fall in the group of "pleasantly surprised". We were greeted by smiling faces and were promptly seated and served chips with salsa. The salsa was delicious! I do think it would have been nice to have been brought more than one little bowl but I guess we could have asked. Meals were priced between $9-$15 (far, far less during lunch). I ordered fajita nachos and my partner (32/33 years old) ordered enchiladas. O.M.G. Delicious! My nachos were enormous! If you like cheese then this is like cheese heaven. I would say that this could easily make a meal for two. I ate far more than I needed to and still had a third of them left. This is especially true if you still have chips left over from earlier. There is more than enough fajita topping to make another plateful! The enchiladas also deserve a great review. He got the supreme platter and enjoyed the cheese enchilada the most. Great food for great prices! We would definitely return!!

I love Mexican and this is a great place to get it. It is always fast no matter how many people are there and always hot and fresh. I've gotten the taco salad, fajitas, burrito, quesadilla s, chalupa, and tacos. Ive also hag the chicken nuggets since my kids don't really like Mexican. Won't say the nuggets were worth it, and the chalupa is nothing like the one at taco bell. Maybe taco bell took the chalupa and made it their own? Its just a scoop of beef on top of a small tostado. The fried ice cream is great as is a fried cream cheese thing wrapped in cinnamon sugar.

I love real Mexican food. This is the best Mexican restaurant in the area. They have really good food at a good price. The interior is no different than any other Mexican restaurant. The food is quite different in that they do not put a lot of sauce all over the food to make it taste good. They have a great dish called Talapia A La Mexicana, it is by far my favorite. I also love the nacho supreme appetizer. The Margaritas are the BEST in town! Be sure to get top shelf alcohol in it as it gives the drink a nice punch :) If you have a taste for good Mexican food & you are in the area, this is the only place in a 50 mile radius that is good! Enjoy!

If you're looking for cheap, solid, and tasty Mexican food here is the place. Was here for a convention and decided to stop by this place after seeing it's menu. Food came out quick and was delicious. If i'm ever in Dover again I will surely go here.

Good food at a good price. Always enjoy the service and meal when I have the opportunity to eat here. The location is convenient being right on rt13. I am picky on what Mexican food I like and can always find an enjoyable menu item.

This place has really good food, but it's not necessarily Mexican food you get in TX or Arizona. Just not the same flare or authenticity as the food you'll find close to the boarder. Needless to say, my family finds ourselves here quite often! The environment leaves somewhat to be desired because of the tight fit seating and uncomfortable chairs and tables. The outside of the building makes you think you've arrived at an old- abandon Wendy's fast food joint, which you actually have I think...but, alas, you'll find a much better meal and bar inside!

Although the restaurant was crowded, the meal was the worst Mexican food that we've ever had. The taco shells were like cardboard, the meat filling was tasteless, the frajitas were overcooked, and the service was slam-bang. Won't make that mistake again, amigo.

I've eaten here a couple of times with friends and the service is amazing! Do yourself a favor and eat here!

Best place to get Mexican food in Dover. Good food, very well seasoned, juicy/tender chicken dishes. Less crowded than Tonalteca down the road. Wait staff is friendly and attentive, gets to know their regulars (and makes them stronger drinks!). The decor is lacking and it's in what probably used to be a Wendy's a decade ago so it doesn't look as nice but who cares when the food is good (such a rarity in Dover, DE). Reasonable pricing. TV is in the bar area only (which is a plus in my opinion).

Good choice for everyday Mexican cuisine. Everyone leaves full and happy.

The meal of fish tacos expertly prepared with all fresh ingredients. My husband had the taco salad all freshly prepared and delicious. Sangria was perfection. Yes we will be returning. The service was perfect and we were quite impressed with our waiter who couldn't have been more accountable. Kathy

These raving reviews have to be bogus. Let me start off by saying the waiter was completely inattentive. Coming to the table to drop off a pitcher once and that was it. He was curt and ignorant. It was out of the way to even ask for more napkins. This is the furthest from authentic Mexican foods as it comes. The queso was canned American cheese...or at last cut 50/50 with it. I live in Philadelphia...we use canned American cheese sauce on our cheese steaks...I know what I was eating! The guacamole was bland and clearly packaged and the "salsa" that came with the stale, burnt oil chips tasted like cold crushed tomatoes. The shrimp quesadilla that I paid $10.75 for was completely over priced and disgusting. It tasted like a fish tank and there was American cheese in the quesadilla. Greasy, dirty Shrimp and American cheese...not so pleasant! I drove several hours to see my sister who happened to be a feasible distance from me on a work trip. We were ready to sit, relax and spend some money. We were so dissatisfied we didn't dare stay for dessert! Try another restaurant...seriously, taco bell has more seasoning in their dishes! At least you know you're getting cheddar cheese! Never, EVER again!

Very average American-style Mexican chain restaurant. It ain't Mexican Mexican if that's what you are after. But being a gringo, you weren't probably looking for that anyway.

  • Christina B.

Slop Mexican food served in an over-the-top themed restaurant. They sat us in a dark, dingy booth where the furniture was so big that the waiter had to struggle his way around it to bring us our food. The dishes were heavily seasoned with MSG laden adobo and cooked to death. The service was fast but not at all friendly or welcoming. The complimentary chips smelled of the dirty oil they were fried in. If you must go, head straight to the bar for the drinks and skip the food.

Meh. I agree with another posting that the queso with sausage is amazing. Other than that the food was below average. I didn't even want to finish my quesadilla. I also didn't think the margarita was super good. Probably won't go back, unless it was for the queso with sausage.

I've already reviewed La Tolteca for both the Concord Pike and Rehoboth locations, so I'll try to make this shorter! I like that this site is right off the highway, and close to several hotels and other stores. I only ordered takeout from this location, and it did take an extra few minutes to order due to a newer cashier I believe. I was asked if I wanted it spicy. Of course I did. Food arrived in maybe six minutes, at 8pm on a Saturday. Nice. And holy chipotles, guys, the food was really spicy. I got the camarones diablo, spicy shrimp, and thank goodness it came with a "guac salad" which was shredded lettuce, premade guacamole and a thick slide of tomato to cool everything down because otherwise it would have been tricky business. I liked that they gave me, as a takeout customer, a large order of complimentary chips and salsa. This Tolteca is probably my least favorite, but not by a large margin. Other locations just seem nicer, a little cleaner, and larger as well. I was surprised that they advertised delivery; something I haven't seen on any other location yet. Food is just as consistent as other locations! Entertainment book has BOGO coupons too.

Love their enchiladas!! This is a very good Mexican restaurant and is reasonably authentic. The menu is better than most Am-Mex restaurants. The salsa is better than most places as well, and has a nice zing and good flavor. Comments and Observations: The entire staff is Mexican, which is a good thing. Their enchiladas are my favorite in the whole area (PA, NJ, DE, MD). The chili rellenos are different (someone else said this too)...they contain mashed potato in the stuffing...I enjoyed this. They have the best tamales that I've had in 5 years in Southern CA. Their prices are reasonable.

I love authentic Mexican food. I also love Tex-Mex food. This is the later. Sometimes you want an overstuffed burrito smothered with cheese, you know? In Dover, there are two Mexican restaurants with similar names that are about 2 miles apart on the same road -- La Tolteca and La Tonalteca. But what a difference those 2 miles and the letters "na" make. La Tolteca you should bring your friends to for a fun feast. La Tonalteca you should avoid. (I'm pretty sure a couple of these bad reviews are for La Tonalteca. It's the way gaudier place. Way.) I will say that the food can be a bit uneven here. We've gone several times and once the food had significantly less seasoning. It's like the chef that day decided to put us all on a low-sodium diet. The burritos and chimichangas are delicious. My husband likes the fajitas among other things. The meat is nicely seasoned the the onions and peppers are seared just how he likes them. I also love the salsa. They'll sell you some extra to take home. Which I want to do but keep forgetting. I'm so full at the end of the meal that I finally stop craving extra salsa. Lots of good food for a reasonable price and the wait staff is nice and friendly.

I can't dispute with the other reviewers, the staff is Mexican. But to say that equates to authentic is like argueing the Chinese food at the mall is authentic because the server spoke broken English. This is a classic American Mexican formula restaurant, complete with the combo menu of taco, burrito, and chimichanga- all slopped with red sauce and cheese. But just the same, I don't care about authenticity if the food is good. I wouldn't say it was good though. It was fair and unremarkable, and the prices are decent - my dinner + soda was $10. Service was not rude, but they were not warm or hospitable either.

When everyone in there speaks Spanish (and barely any English), and you're in Dover, DE, you know it's probably going to be at least halfway decent. I went there in a large group, while racing in DE this past spring. Our friend's wife is from Peru, so he knows what real guacamole and pico de gallo is supposed to taste like. He thought those two things were great...that says something! We were pleasantly surprised; it was a busy Friday night, but they managed to squeeze all 14 of us in. We had chips and salsa on the table almost immediately, and they brought more without us asking. The drinks were great, and decently strong. I had fish tacos, and they came well seasoned with lots of rice and beans. You have to pay extra for the guacamole sides, but it's worth it. I'd definitely go back again - great food and great atmosphere, and decent prices. Interesting to find it next to the NASCAR track, but what a liittle gem.

Late Sunday night, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a post-beach dinner at La Tolteca. Her grilled fish was good, and so was my shrimp, onions, peppers, mushrooms served on a hot iron plate. Although the shrimp began to dry out on the heated tray, I was glad to eat it hot. We shared a sweet dessert. Good menu selection for Mex American. Service was good, from a capable waiter who had been there 7 years. Ambience was cheery, tho some may not like the artificial tinsel plants, and the seating comfortable. Decent value for the money.

I love this Mexican restaurant. Definitely wowed me. What a great day to experience a great restaurant. I specially was impressed by the price and the huge portion of food. First time I ordered Taco Salad and I was not disappointed because it came out wonderful and delicious. I finished the whole taco salad. With extra cost of guacamole, it was creamy and tasty. The shell was delicious and the chips as starter that are all homemade were filling. I say sign me up and totally forget about Taco Bell which is next to it. This is the Mexican way to New Mexico!

One of the better Mexican restaurants I have been to. The staff is really friendly, and are great with kids! The food tastes wonderful, and the prices for the amounts u get is a good deal. They also have a 64oz margarita! The chips and salsa you start with is delicious considering other restaurants with overly cilantro flavored salsa. If you like more authentic Mexican cuisine than Taco bell give this place a try. There is a lot to chose from on the menu so there are options for everyone.

Good food, fast service, drunk from margaritas....my kind of place! Super inexpensive, look for the coupons!

The chips and salsa you're served as a standard part of the service both seem like they're freshly made instead of served from a can. Wait staff is pleasant and attentive without being overbearing, and the service is fairly prompt. The food is delicious and served in generous portions. Having Dos Equis on tap - and served in a chilled stein, nonetheless - is an excellent touch. The only possible blemish on an otherwise remarkable dining experience is the occasional disturbance from the other patrons - this really isn't the restaurant's fault; it's lower Delaware, after all - but it does affect the experience. I suppose that part of the experience could be classified as "entertainment." They used to have dancing bears in the circus; nowadays, it's more amusing to listen to the rustic folks in the next booth confuse Italian with Spanish by responding to their Hispanic waiter who asks if they're done with their plate: "Yeah, we're finito."

Love their food here. Almost as good as mexican food in the southwest. Their American style tacos are the best and the mole is fantastic.

  • Sean M.

This is good Mexican and reasonably authentic. The menu is an upgrade over most Gringo-Mex but it is not completely de-TexMex-ed. The clientele is mostly white but people seemed to know what the were ordering. The Margarita's are a mix but they worked for me. The salsa they put out with the chips is spicier than average but had real flavor. * Entire staff appeared to be Mexican, including kitchen * chorizo con cheso was artery cloggin' good * interesting twist on chile rellenos, mashed potato in the stuffing, the table was split on this I liked it. * best tamales I have had in long time * carnitas was dry but decent. * guacamole was creamy and garlicky, reminded me of my fav taquito stand in San Diego. * very efficient staff and decent prices.

I give it three stars just because it's the best around. Let me be honest, I am not blown away by this place, though I do admit to hitting it up at least once a month. I love Mexican food, and good Mexican is hard to come by...especially in Dover, DE of all places. This place is ok. The decor is week and needs to be updated. It doesn't have that "fresh feel," so to speak. Honestly, it feels kind of dirty in there - the menus are dirty and old, the table clothes are gross and sticky, and it smells a bit off when you first walk in. The service is ok. It's not horrible, but it's not amazing either...it's...ok. The food is ok. Again, it's the best around. I've watched the kitchen prepare food a few times while waiting for a pickup order. They are putting stuff together with their bare hands. They are also using the warming oven too much for my taste. If you're in the Wilmington area, check out the La Toteca on Concord Pike...it blows this Dover one outta the water. I never cease to be amazed how the simple but key components to running a good restaurant are continually overlooked: cleanliness, customer service, quality food.

  • Jonathan J.

Honestly the place for most people would get 4 stars, but as a native Texan I'm used to Tex-Mex cuisine. It seems like the "typical" Mexican restaurant being overly salty, lime syrup margaritas, and an abundance of red sauce. The staff on past visits (over a dozen) haven't been overly friendly, but not rude either. They take your order and let you be. The flavors in my opinion are somewhat bland with an over abundance of white cheese and seasoning. When I say bland, I mean there is "flavor", but nothing really stands out and it all tastes pretty much the same from enchiladas to quesadillas to fajitas. I will say I'm biased since what I think of Mexican is not this. So, give it a try, you may like it, but if you like good Tex-Mex style with chili con carne sauce, this is not it.

pros: authentic mexican food and liquor cons: the waiter serving you can only understand the numbers on the menu and is like a damn robot b/c he did not understand english so he does not understand when you want to change your order and gets testy when he should understand english if he is serving americans wtf, get it together

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
