After a bad breakfast experience at a near-by big-name place, we wanted a different place for breakfast. We stopped in here for a late Saturday night supper to see what it was like. It is 'squeaky-clean' 24 hr. diner which has apparently been in business for a long time (I think I saw a sign that said 1954?). The prices were a bit higher than I am personally used to, but it is a very touristy area, so they are really a bit lower than other places with similar menus but 'bigger names'. It is not at all fancy, but we were very happy with supper: patty melts, french dip & cold roast beef sandwich. There was a wide selection, with any of it available at any time of the day. The food was much better than average. Our waitress was great and knew the menu well. She was 'expecting', and was as quick, happy & chipper as you could ever hope for, especially on a late shift! We spoke with the hostess/waitress about a group of 7 the next morning, and were told it would be fine. We arrived the next morning (Sunday) at about 9:30. The place was busy, but low & behold, the same hostess was back on, recognized us at first glance and had a big table ready for us in minutes, even though they were pretty busy. Our waiter, Nick, arrived promptly and returned with coffees in minutes and then brought us a thermal pot. He was back at exactly the right time to take our orders. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first - he took our orders with no notepad. We had a few special requests, such as crisp bacon, dark toast for some and different breads for others, and 1 person ordered 3 items off the a la cart menu. Our breakfast arrived very quickly, especially considering how many tables were seated. I truly did not expect everything to arrive correctly, but it did! Exactly right for everyone. They don't use trays to carry orders out, so he made a couple trips, but nothing suffered for it - nothing had been under heat lamps for more than a few moments. The toast was hot and crisp, and the requests for 'dark' were good. The eggs were all cooked correctly and piping hot. So, hats off to the Waitstaff and to the Cooks!! They all worked together superbly, on 2 different days, 2 different meals, and took a large table in stride. Everyone in the party was impressed. Three of them are locals (well, 20 miles away), and will definitely be here again. If we travel there again, we will too!

Nothing special at all with this place. Was driving through Delaware and wanted to eat at a diner and this place looks like one. I had the country fried steak and eggs. Steak looked like it was frozen but at least had some sort of taste. My wife had the pancakes and eggs with grits. Neither had any taste.

It's a diner. Service for breakfast was fast. We had pancakes. The omelets looked huge

Can't lower the review but thought I'd give it another chance after the 58-year-old owner was shot and killed by his girlfriend... A 20-something server. It got worse. Ordered two simple breakfasts that arrived 20 minutes later, dropped on the table cold, with indifference. Not to mention I'm incredulous at what passes for a $9 breakfast. (See photo)

Me and my family went there for Thanksgiving. The food is pretty good. We got the turkey special, that was one great turkey! It comes with a lot of side dishes. Reasonable pricing considering that the diners in NY (where I'm originally from) are more expensive. The only bad thing about our whole lunch was that the salad was too small. Thumbs up for the milkshakes.

Second visit here with Father-in-Law, Brother-in-Law etc. Not quite as good this time, though the Liver and Onions was larger and just as tender and tasty as last time. Tuna Melt was excellent, and Knackwurst with Saurkraut quite good. However, chicken with biscuits was very salty--almost decided to send it back. But the service was prompt and friendly, iced tea flowing freely, despite a big crowd for Father's Day.

Took wife and parents for a Sunday lunch. Not a good experience. No drinks even after seated over 20 minutes. Complained nicely to manager. Server rolled eyes and didnt seem to care. Hope she has to pay for the food. We walked out. Cannot recommend. No idea how food was but didn't care. Manager should have done more about problem waitress. Went down to Kirby and Holloways restaurant short distance away. It was much better service...even though they were busier!

Looking to lose a few quick pounds and chisel that abdomen just in time for beach season? Don't waste time, money, and patience with fancy diets or exercise DVDs! Just pop in to the Hollywood Diner for some good times and great food! I highly recommend the scrambled eggs with toast and salmonella. Any charm emanating from the Hollywood Diner will soon be whisked away by fear of catching airborne hepatitis as you cross the eatery's threshold. You may be thinking to yourself, "There's no such thing as airborne hepatitis." Well, at the Hollywood Diner, anything is possible. I write this review from my third straight day sitting on the toilet. I've never had food poisoning before, and I usually have a stomach and immune system that will purge any type of foodborne illness without me noticing a thing. But remember, we are talking about the Hollywood Diner where anything is possible. I went the safe route and ordered eggs, hashbrowns, and toast since breakfast food is ALWAYS good There were only two other parties there, yet it took the classless boars working there roughly an hour to bring out a grease-covered turd-of-a-breakfast. No amount of ketchup or hot sauce will add the necessary *touch* required by such a tasteless meal. I wasn't that upset, because I was famished and the meal was under $10. I nearly didn't make it to my hotel room (a mere 1 mile away) before my night (and almost my jeans) was ruined by the bacteria-laden filth I so casually ingested. I would normally blame myself for knowingly getting into a jam of this nature, but even I couldn't have predicted the magnitude of my decision I witlessly made three painful nights ago. And this isn't just a freak occurrence. Another member of my party has contracted a foodborne illness from the Hollywood Diner and says his insides are, "Torn apart." I wouldn't wish this torment upon my worst enemies and would highly discourage anyone from even thinking about choosing the culinary prowess the Hollywood Diner offers. Believe me, you'll only end up malnourished, wallowing in regret on the toilet with a chafed behind.

Within ten minutes of sitting down, a fight broke out in the foyer. Not that that has anything to do with the food, necessarily, but it's a testament to the type of crowd you might expect to find in the middle of the night at one of Dover's three restaurants that manage to stay open past 10 PM. This is a city whose growth is largely due to the tourist money from the casino, so as you might imagine, the nightlife is a bit lacking. In the case of the Hollywood Diner, the food is lacking, too. Oh sure, the menu is expansive - you could get a steak and lobster dinner if you were truly willing to tempt fate, but this is a diner, after all, so you're best off playing to the typical diner strengths. This means eggs, one of the few things upon which no restaurant can easily shrift you. I had a tomato and mozzarella omelette which reached the upper echelons of "not bad," and the same could be said of the toast, as well, though the way it was presented it could have been called a butter sandwich. The good stops there - my dining compatriots had complaints about their severely overcooked chicken strips, the bland and salty waffles, and while The Hollywood was generous in giving up two warm-n-serve hash brown patties, it wasn't worth my time to make it through even one of them. I guess the scrapple wasn't bad, and the coffee was plentiful, so there's that. They say nothing good happens after 2 AM. I think choosing the Hollywood could be included amongst that list of mistakes.

You ever go someplace where you would be suprised if you dont get food poisoned? Imagine going into a diner that looks upscale but puts out meals your little brother could do a better job on. The server tried hard but the kitchen was useless. I ordered their goulash special and got a plate that resembled junk stew: maccaroni noodles with bell peppers, onions and ground beef in an almost non existant tomato sauce. Hamburger helper would have been more appetizing. I sent it back. My wife's scrambled eggs were stil runny and my son's hash browns were by Oreida - totally frozen fried then served. The final nail in their coffin was that the silverware and glasses were not clean. Save money and bad heartburn and go someplace really upscale like Bob Evans

DO NOT EAT HERE!!! This place is horrible. Food, service management all bad and the roof was leaking. Spent $45.00 on the family for lunch and none of us were even slightly satisfied. Kids got breakfast and a milkshake. Bacon was way overdone. Food was cold Waitress forgot about the milkshake. Took an hour to get the food. I overheard another group send back food because it was not even warm. Half hour later it came back wrong, and they just said forget it and left. I had a corned beef rueben and it was not edible for a dog. All fat and no meat which made it impossible to chew. I had it on wheat because they ran out of rye. I also overheard they ran out of chicken fingers and scrapple. My fries looked and had the texture of saved from the previous day, while bf's were fresh but of the same cheap shoestring variety. Why would you give the same table one crappy order and one halfway decent? He had a tuna club and for $9.00 was not worth it. While paying in line the elderly women in front tried to complain and got nowhere so I just told myself this is a learning experience and never to go here again.

Terrible food. Terrible service. Obvious management problems regarding staffing and food quality/preparation. Steer clear or you will be sorry. My wife and I walked out and won't be back!

I have been familiar with the Hollywood Diner for at least 50 years. I was amazed when I returned to Dover after many, many years, and found the place completely renovated. It looked clean and all the flies were gone! Some of the food is good; some is not. I have distinguished between the good and bad, and know what to order. The staff is friendly and attentive. So, call me crazy...I LOVE the place. Except for the small, pseudo juke boxes. I remember when each booth had a juke box of its own. I will continue to go back again and again.

Why spend money on a pile of synthetic frozen food here when you could go to Petsmart and eat a pile of cat feces instead? AVOID. At ALL COSTS. Although it's true that it's one of about 3 businesses that are open 24 hours in Dover, the Iron-Chefs at hollywood diner take special care to insure that you get watered-down, tasteless, unseasoned food 24/7 while at the same time prying hard-earned dollars from your wallet. How many ways can I say this? They suck. If you absolutely must satisfy a craving at 3 AM, try IHOP (south of Hollywood Diner [week-ends only]) or, although I would not recommend it under any other circumstance, (W)affle House on Route One (going south). If none of these options sound appealing, Wal-Mart on Route One is open 24 hours and you could buy some chips and soda instead* *ironically, chips and soda have 10 times the heath benefits and are filling beyond anything that has ever crawled off the floor and onto the dishes served at Hollywood Diner.

I will make it sweet and short, dont eat here if you value your stomach!! I am in shock with the quality of the food. I think this place could screw up toast. I have never met a baked potato that I could not eat. My fiancee has never had mashed potatos he was unable to eat...and he was in the navy! We did pay for our dinner but had to walk out without eating anything. We dd not feel it would be safe. Do yourself a favor .....just starve!

    Large menu and large portions.

Had breakfast and lunch there a few times. Like most diners, they do a great job of having anything and everything on the menu, but an average job in every department. The decor is somehow borrowed from a 60's diner. The back section of the diner could use more ventilation. The staff is loud, friendly and keeps your glass full. Everything is overcooked, but they serve a good cup of coffee.

everytime i go there the food is good ,nothing special. service has always been excellent. Trudy is the greatest asset to the diner. Stay with normal dinner food burgers, fries, eggs. huge portions.

It's gets two stars for the atmosphere. I wouldn't try and get fancy with what you order. Stick to eggs bacon and toast. Getting anything else is asking for trouble and most likely a serious upset stomach. Even for a diner it under performs. They put alot of money into a remodel but should have put some money into getting decent cooks.

I went here before going fishing and needed a stick to the ribs breakfast. I got the big poppa and wasn't disappointed. Good price and good food

Went in on Friday at 6pm with wife and son and no other patrons which should have raised a red flag. I ordered the hot open roast beef and wife ordered spinach and feta omelet. Order was taking longer than it should of, we thought, since we were the only diners. The meals came and I took a big bite and almost hearled slimey rancid beef. My wife looks at me and knows instantly what's wrong an completely looses her appetite. I flag the waitress and she can see by our astonished faces that something was seriously wrong. We explained the the beef was rancid and she quickly took the poison away while asking if I'd like something else. That would be a forever NO!!!! Called health department.

French dip. On a stale hamburger bun? MonteChristo. Also gross. Milk shakes.....yummy. Pretty sure I'm going to get sick.

I've only been for breakfast but it's one of our favorites. The servers are friendly and the coffee is good. I always order the spinach and feta omelet. My husband changes his orders up. We've always had good food and service. I'd like to try it for lunch or dinner.

Well if I could give this place no stars I would! Last year I had a breakfast here and I sent it back because the home fries were so greasy and tasted a week old. I was assured by a friend today that things had done a big turn around and was much better. The fact is the meal was disgusting, the hash browns were hard and rubbery and still tasted like they were three days old and cooked in rancid oil. The chipped beef had a very off taste as well, the only bright spot was a decent waitress. My recommendation is to avoid this place at all costs, a big waste of money. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go gargle again and try and get rid of this taste in my mouth, ugg.

I go here for breakfast regularly. The food is just what you expect from a diner, but not greasy. Coffee flows freely and the service is fast and friendly. It's a great place to hang out with a friend or two and catch up. Highly recommended.

This place has struggled to keep its charm and good food and service since the owner is no longer around. Servers here are hit or miss. Had chili here once and I swear it was Hormel. I usually stick with the country fried steak and have never been disappointed with it. It can be a little salty sometimes though. It's open 24 hrs and one of very few places that are open late at night. So the patrons can vary greatly.

Lived here for years but never went in. Turns out I wasn't missing much. Went here on a Tuesday night around 9pm and there was only 1 other party. A young couple with 2 kids that were running rampant around the diner. The parents didn't care nor did the staff. The lady served us seemed nice but only checked on us once. I ordered an omelette and it was very mediocre. The cheese was too much and the egg was overcooked. The person I was with ordered the chicken fried steak and it was cold and possibly even worse than Denny's/IHOP/or other breakfast chains that carry it. Such a disappointment.
