Horrible coffee but friendly staff. Definitely not professional. Tried it several times and won't go back!

What a wonderful find ... Thanks yelpers! We came across this little coffeehouse in the midst of a 9 hour car ride and couldn't be happier. There is a casual ambience with plenty of table tops as well as a few leather bound chairs present. The menu offers sandwiches and burgers as well as salads and soups. I had a roast beef sandwich with green chiles and was beyond impressed. My counterpart had a Reuben and was everything a Reuben should be. They do offer a full coffee bar as well as a full alcoholic bar. We tried two local beers in tap, always a quick way to my heart, and they were so so so tasty. This place has all the appeal of a small town shop that is easily accessible from I-25. With great food and great beers it will certainly become a standard visit anytime we stroll through Trinidad. Bottom line: you should stop by if in the area!

I stopped in here to gain some energy during a road trip. I ordered a double dirty iced chai. Flavor wise it was good, far better than the average coffee chain. The espresso had good flavor and it was the perfect pick me up. The service is my reason for not giving the 5th star. I was ordering Togo and the barista/cashier seemed a bit annoyed that I was standing by the counter to read the menu on the wall. Even after ordering the guy seemed aggravated. I waited in the couch and lounge area until my drink was ready.

What a lovely experience! We exited #14 and it was under construction so exit Main Street. It was delicious food. We had a salad, sweet potato fries and a sandwich. Wonderful. Don't waste your time on fast food. Also their service was fast. Very much worth the very little extra effort to get there. Restaurant was spotless, restrooms were spotless. Wait staff was polite and efficient. Very very pleased.

Moved to town 9 weeks ago, and I love this place! Fabulous food and friendly people! Coffee shop, restaurant, and a full bar. Wanted a beer one afternoon, and their Blue Moon was under 3 dollars, and it wasn't even happy hour!

The pull pork sandwich is very good!!! Fast service. Hard to get to the restaurant since there in road construction right in from. You have to drive around some buildings and can not go directly from the freeway

Great place to stop in on the drive through, right off I-25. The Mexican hot chocolate was perfect on a snowy day, and the black/tan onion rings - outstanding!

My favorite place for coffee and internet when visiting friends in the town of Trinidad, CO. The food is wonderful, the service and people are wonderful too. This old mining town boasts a population of 8,771, has more bricks than the land of Oz and is known as the sex-change capital of the U.S. You better believe I'm going to be drawn to a quirky old mountain town like this and I was very pleased to find Cafe What a Grind. Cafe What a Grind has taken up residency in a building that has been family owned since 1908. It was originally a Snodgrass grocery store and since been many things. It has recently been remodeled and is now home to not only a coffee bar up front, but (beginning a year ago) also an alcohol bar in the back and a full menu restaurant. I failed to show up with an appetite, but that didn't hold me back from shoving a slice of homemade blackberry pie into my pie hole. That is where pie goes, in case you don't know. Me to my pie, "Oh, the place you'll go...like right into my mouth." I'll just be talking about the coffee part of Cafe What a Grind. This is, after all, what I do. Their drinks menu offers all of the basics along with signature drinks, sodas and a Red Bull slushie. A RED BULL SLUSHIE! Do you know why I just typed that in all caps? Because that is how your brain will view the world after consuming this drink. Red Bull slushies are not recommended for those with pre-existing heart conditions, women who are pregnant or nursing or anyone with a tendency to run through the streets naked, screaming at the top of their lungs. Part of me wants to say this drink is a horrible idea, but I can guarantee it is probably a best-seller. As per usual, I ordered an espresso and a drip coffee. Cafe What a Grind gets their beans from roaster Spanish Peaks Coffee in Colorado Springs, CO. Both the espresso and the drip brew were incredibly light. I have the kind of tastebuds that prefer darker flavor, so I combined my espresso with my drip and it made for a great and highly caffeinated cup of coffee. Their bakery case was stocked with homemade cakes, pies, scones, cheesecake and other pastries. There is a small seating area by the window with a couch and a few comfortable chairs. The majority of the space is tables and chairs and then there is a lovely, hand built bar in the back that was crafted buy a local. There were a few regulars set up at tables. One woman even had fresh eggs for sale which I had to buy. I can't say no to farm fresh anything! Cafe What a Grind will be celebrating six years as a coffee house this coming Halloween. I hope to head back to Trinidad soon and will definitely stop back in to enjoy some pie and coffee, but for the safety of those around me I will stay away from the Red Bull slushie.

Wow! Best veggie burger ever!!! Also, the German chocolate latte was amazing! Service was great and food came out in a timely fashion. Overall experience was excellent! Would recommend this place to everyone passing by!

Decent Mediterranean Omelet. I recommend ordering with sausage if you are a carnivore. It comes in sausage strips. The bacon is a little fatty, but really delicious. The city had the entire front street ripped up so the patio wasn't open, much to the disappointment of my pitty. But we took everything to go. Hash browns were not to greasy and fried up perfectly.

The food was decent but definitely over priced. I felt like there were too many choices I had to make for kids food. I don't need to pick the kind of bread and cheese for a grilled cheese. I got a Reuben and house salad. The salad was a joke. Lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes. C'mon man. The chipotle ranch was good, if not a little too thick. Is was 16 degrees outside and snowing so my wife wanted half a sandwich and the soup of the day. At 12:30, they were "still cooking the soup". They advertise breakfast, brunch, and lunch but stop serving breakfast at 11am. I felt like this restaurant was about a half step off on everything. They could be a really great little stop in Trinidad with marginally better execution. The bones are there. Good location, interesting space/decor, slightly quirky staff, but just one step behind. I would try it again just to see if our experience was a fluke.

Ate here on our way through town, based on Yelp recommendations. Service not exactly surly, but sure not friendly. Really slow too, took 30 or 40 minutes, and only two other customers. Sandwiches were good, not very interesting, but fresh.

I had a good lunch here between points along the Santa Fe Trail. The server made a fresh pot of coffee. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with Pepper Jack. The side was pasta salad. Well done. They're getting ready to roll out a dinner menu. Restroom was functional and clean. Suggestions for improving the place: none.

It was a bar-coffee shop-grill-in-one kind of place. The employees greeted us at the entrance smoking cigarettes. There was a coffee station on the left and a bar in the far back of the room. The tables were covered with torn vinyl or plastic cover. Our waiter was friendly but lacked knowledge of the menu. The menu items were the typical American grill items except for pig wings. My husband got the crab Alfredo and I got the pig wings. The ratio of Alfredo sauce to pasta was 9:1. It looked more like Alfredo soup. It tasted like ragu Alfredo sauce in a can. The pig wings looked like a chicken drumstick. The pork was moist and tender. The BBQ sauce was not too sweet with a hint of smoke. This is the entrée to order when eating here. We also tried the fried zucchini and fried pickles. The batter was thick and uncooked internally. It left a sticky texture on the zucchini and pickles. There was hair within the batter of a fried pickle. At that point, we set the plate aside. I informed and showed the waiter the 2" hair in the batter but he still charged us for the appetizer. Aside from the hair and uncooked batter, the zucchini and pickles (without the batter) were good. The bartender and the manager were standing behind the bar chatting with a patron. The bartender began to slapping the manager's "backside" as though she was playing African drums. There were probably 15 people in the cafe. The bathroom was filthy but most bar bathrooms look like that. I was excited to see that they offered almond milk at the coffee shop. Even after our dinner experience, I planned on getting my tea there the next morning (Saturday morning). The hours on Saturday were 5-9pm! Who has a coffee shop that does not open in the morning? I still would be willing to try this place again.

My son and I were looking for a lighter dinner alternative than offered by the multiple Italian restaurants. I am so glad we found this place - what a fantastic dinner! We've had better salads (thus the 4- rather than 5-star rating), but we've never had anything like the shrimp cocktail-like ceviche served as an appetizer with glorious, homemade tortilla chips. I would drive a long way just to have this dish again. It was truly amazing! Made daily by the bartender, this is a must-have as part of any meal. The funky ambience, the full bar and the downtown location (no worries about parking though) help to round off the reasons why this place should be a top dinner choice.

The only place I know in town where you can pair fried pickles with a fat tire. The burgers are cooked to order and on a pretzel bun. And the interior is great open brick. Nice place for a quiet drink with friends.

Service was great- very friendly and helpful. Good atmosphere and very clean. Lots of choices! Enjoyed the Grind Grille. Definitely will come back when in the area. If you are traveling on I25 it's an easy stop and much better than the usual chain lunch stops!

I've been eating lunch here for a while now off and on and the crew working during that time is phenomenal, as well as, the food. Never had bad service and I've never had a bad lunch meal. I wish I could review lunch and dinner of a restaurant seperatly. Now lets get down to the reason for my 2 star review. Upon arrival there was a group of people sitting in the reading/couch area being very noisy. We were NOT greeted entering and the waitress simply stated "Seat yourselves." Sitting down the waitress brought us our menus and got our drink order. The bartender was sitting on the couch just talking and took her a good 5 min to get up to fill my beer and my mother's Bloody Mary. The meal itself was fantastic. The cooks did a really great job. Wonderful taste and it was a good portion. Highly recomment the cheese with steak and mashed potatos. The service though was just awful. The waitress, bartender, manager (whom I recognized from my lunch visits) were just sitting around with friends in the couch area. Our waitress sat and played on what looked like an iPad and only returned once to check on us. Never had our drinks refilled or asked if we wanted more. Upon leaving I noticed the bartender getting into what I assumed was her vehicle parked right infront of the cafe itself. The only reason I made note of this is that space was filled with the same car when we arrived and had to park across the street. My mother has some trouble walking and that parking space would have been great for her to get inside and sit down quickly. That space should be for paying customers and NOT employees. Again, the only saving grace in not getting a 1 star is the food was fantastic and the lunch staff, as well as, the food during that time is also great. Beware of the night crew!

My friend and I were on our way back to Los Angeles when we realized that we were in need of gas, food and a post office. Thankfully Yelp lead us to Trinidad. We had a great little lunch at the counter and talked to the owner, Lauren. We shared stories and A LOT of laughs. This place is great and OMG are their cranberry pecan cookies spectacular! I wish I would have had enough room to buy a couple more for the road but I didn't have the foresight.

The coffee, food and service were excellent. Breakfast was gourmet quality with fresh veggies and herbs in my outstanding omelette. This was our very best meal stop on a 10-day vacation. Bravo!

Stopped here passing through on a road trip and was very pleasantly surprised. I got a milky way latte and had a breakfast panini. I was thrilled that they had almond milk for my latte and gluten free bread for my sandwich. Definitely a rare find especially in a small town. Both were great and the atmosphere was very chill. If I ever pass through again, this is a MUST on my stop list.

On oasis of awesomeness on the way to Denver from Houston. On our third day of driving, we could feel it getting close. We were almost in Colorado. But we were fading fast. Food and caffeine were on the agenda. Up steps What'a Grind. This little gem in the border town of Trinidad was just what the roadtrip doctor ordered. Coffee. Burger. Sandwich. Tea. I had a Buffalo burger with avocado and bacon. My wife went with a soup and halfsandwich. Both came out hot and quick and had a ton of flavor. There isn't a lot to explain other than you're going to have a comfortable, trendy environment with good food and great coffee. We showed up around halloween so the place was decked out in its Halloween finest. Essentially, this is a big city coffeehouse in a small town. If you're ever in Trinidad, check this place out. It's worth the stop.

I was thrilled to find this place right off I-25 on my 12 hour slog from Texas back to Denver. The coffee was great -- l hadn't been able to find any good coffee in Texas so was pining for some. I was disappointed that I didn't have the time to simply hang out -- it's an attractive joint in an attractive part of town.

We just travelled in four states and my daughter sums up this meal as "the best on the whole trip". This place is a awesome restaurant in the evening with dishes you would find in a major city. I could come up with very small faults but Dude this ain't a Food Network show ok? Chops, steak, shrimp, bernaise, Alfredo it's all there. Killer marinara sauce. Sides to dishes are stars in themselves. Not inexpensive but a absolute gem in this area of the country. Gosh I wonder how the espresso is in the morning...

What a treasure in Trinidad! We needed a lunch stop on our way to Santa Fe. This menu more than satisfied. The Sangria was a perfect accompaniment to lunch. Another good steer from Yelp. Nice atmosphere. Barb B

Great Ruben Sandwich! Great coffee! Fantastic coffee! Stop here instead of fast food and chain restaurants in Trinidad. Quaint cafe, good food/ coffee, and nice park around the block....the place is a stones throw off I25.

Stopped by quickly while traveling. Fantastic light and tasty chicken salad sandwich with whole wheat pasta salad. Will come back when nearby. Might even earn a 5th star from me then.

On the road.. Always look for something different. What'a Grind was it! Funky, eclectic and extremely well made, hot food! And, the coffee and cookies (eggnog) were fabulous also!
