Great view. Sad "happy hour." $12 burger -- with no fries? want fries? + $6

A great ending to our last family vacation of the summer. Such a fun evening dining and relaxing by the fire outdoors! Amazing views for a patio dinner and there were yard games for the kids to play which allowed us to enjoy our meals in peace and quiet! Our dinners were delicious, great trout and delicious Wagyu beef! Kids meal was a bit pricey, but they actually ate it! The staff was wonderful and it was very kid friendly. We especially loved watching the sun set after dinner and the full moon rise while making the complimentary s'mores at the fire pit!

Great views! Food was good but very expensive, I guess you have to pay for the view. Kind of tough for me since I get to see this view everyday. I think it would be an awesome happy hour spot!

So, this was my second visit to Heck's. We parked at Devils Thumb Ranch to bike ride for a couple of hours, then headed to Hecks for a late lunch. Last time we came during the winter, and they had special drinks with various spices, really interesting flavors! I had in mind to get a refreshing drink, and the summer drinks really looked delicious. Now, I am not a gin drinker, but this drink on the menu, had an organic gin, yellow chartreuse, peach shrub, and cucumber.....sounds wild, but delicious, earthy and refreshing! I had the mushroom pasta, and loved it, perfect al dente! My husband had a different drink with OJ and rye, not my taste, but he loved it! He also had a salmon BLT that was awesome. The side salad that he had tasted like they had fresh picked lettuce out of the garden with heirloom tomatoes, the light vinaigrette was delightful! We admire this Devils Thumb ranch as day visitors, but would really love to stay there sometime! It is so beautiful, and the decor is stunning! It seems off the beaten path, but there seemed to be a lot going on both times we were there...games outside, horses, picturesque scenery. It is pricey for drinks, but the drinks are so unique and if you pick one that you don't like, they will take it back and get you another! Food is average priced for the valley.

In re-reading my review, it seems a bit mean-spirited to me. The bottom-line was that with the exception of the chicken dish I had, which was good, but not memorable or in any way distinguished, the other food was very good, and I still remember how delicious my honey's elk was. So I'm upping them a star for their nice response to the service difficulties, and wishing them well.

Very expensive let down. We chose Heck's for our after wedding dinner that night. The service was Ok, except for the fact that the server didn't notice that she was not serving me what I had ordered! (carrots instead of spinach). The food was absolutely terrible. My husband ordered a pork chop that was RAW, and couldn't even eat one bite of it. I shared my dinner with him. I ordered the NY strip steak with potatoes and carrots. I received a very bland tasting, fatty piece of meat, uncooked potatoes, and spinach. We still paid close to $80 even after they took 20% Off our ticket. What a waste of money on disgusting, uncooked food. We drove back into Winter Park and had a (2nd dinner) and the Ditch, which was the best food I'd had in a long time. Save your money, Heck's is one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to.

The happy hour and the live music were absolutely amazing! Such a nice touch and a great way to being the winter park crowd coming to the ranch to hang and enjoy the amazing view. Keep it up Devils Thumb Ranch!

Have enjoyed thanksgiving buffet, anniversaries and birthdays here and at Devils Thumb's Ranchhouse for even finer dining. Hecks is the perfect blend of casual-by-the-roaring-fire and great food and fine wine..and all in a setting of out of this world views of the mountain range. Winter is magical and all seasons offer amazing patio to sit by a fire with a beverage. Dining outside in the summer and early fall air is a must...lunch served until 4 pm if you want lighter fare and bask in the humidity-free mountain air.

Heck's is located inside the main lodge at Devil's Thumb Ranch. It is modeled after the Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, OR. It is gorgeous and rustic, with elegant flair. It has a beautiful view of the meadow and hills of the ski trails as well as the iconic "Devil's Thumb" rock formation close to the Continental Divide. There is a classic bar, sofas and armchairs around the fireplace and ample table seating. We always sit in an area adjacent to the windows. There is always room. The place is underutilized. I think that is because they have never quite "found" themselves as a restaurant. Ever sInce they opened, they have been highly variable in menu selections and quality of the food and the service. One of our past visits was truly abysmal. I am hoping they have finally found their niche because on this visit (and we have visited all but one season since they opened) we had the best experience in the restaurant that we have ever had. The food was good, in fact, my duck breast with cherry balsamic sauce and winter veggies, was actually great. Best meal I have ever had here. My husband's meal (lamb-burger on focaccia) was very good. It came with very ordinary french fries but if they had served it with the terrific smashed/fried small potatoes that my meal did, and/or an arugula salad, it could have been great. The breakfasts were traditional lodge food and well prepared. The staff was more plentiful and better trained than in the past. This year, they were really using the bar to their advantage. They had good HH offerings for after skiing, both food and drink. We enjoyed drinks by the fireplace and met some interesting visitors. There was a bubbling crowd which livened the place up and people were talking about the offers they had gathered from Winter Park. I hope this becomes the established experience now and we can count on getting this sort of food and service in the future. We shall see, as we plan to visit again later this season.

OVER RATED & over priced. Service was not great and food was OK. With these prices it should be great and it wasn't. Had to wait despite having a reservation cause we wouldn't take a high table - we had a 6 year old with us and high top wouldn't work. We waited 10 mins after being seated for a menu. Waiter was talking to us and hostess rudely interrupted for him to help someone else right away. Two adults and two kids - bill came to $150 before tip - not worth it.

Let's start by saying the dining space is beautiful. Large beams, stunning supports, amazing stonework - a stunning physical space, with an enormous fireplace. We arrived early on a Tuesday evening, and were promptly seated. We were a table of 4 adults and 3 kids. The timing of the appetizers, kids meals, etc was good. We started with the Wild Game Chili, which was a combination of buffalo, Colorado venison and some sausage. While flavorful, you could not really distinguish the meat within the chili - lots of beans, and the rest seemed to have been cooked for so long, that ingredients were melding together. We also had the Mussels - it was a good sized portion, cooked well, and the broth was delicious. We used the spoon to scoop up the broth, as well as the bread. For entrees, we had the following... Mahi Mahi Filet - We had the send this order back. The Mahi Mahi had a dark, coarse, hard to chew texture to it, as if it had a great deal of freezer burn, and when finally defrosted, all the moisture was drained away. It was terrible. They were accommodating, and replaced the dish with the Mediterranean Ahi Salad, which was average. Butternut Mushroom Risotto - While the Risotto was cooked well, there was a great deal of liquid in the dish. The flavor was average. We were expecting the herbed truffle butter to provide a very distinct flavor, but it did not. A good general risotto, but not really worth ordering again. Grilled Sirloin Steak - Requested medium raw, and it was cooked perfectly. It came with Aged Cheddar Gratin and Wild Arugula Salad. You can't really screw up arugula salad, since it's really just arugula. The Aged Cheddar Gratin was clearly overcooked, and reheated (not sure how many times). The square block of gratin was cooked to a dark layer on both top and bottom, almost as if it was left in the oven, covered, and too long. The layers of potatoes had no creaminess to them, as the layers were just melded together. It was essentially a solid block that didn't shift or side. Rib-Eye Special - described as good, but nothing that stood out. The kids meals were fine, a good selection of choices. Each meal included a drink and a scoop of ice cream. The highlight of the meal was afterwards, when we went outside to the firepit and enjoyed some smores under the stars. This might be a good place to come for a drink, and a snack, as the environment itself is gorgeous.

Heck's for breakfast after a fall morning run was wonderful. Service was friendly and prompt, and the food and drinks were tasty. Cannot comment on the dinner or happy hour, but it was certainly a popular spot.

Popped in for Happy Hour while staying in Winter Park per recommendation from a massage therapist. We thought the property is lovely & has a nice energy about it. Can't beat the happy hour deals, fantastic well crafted food and with the live music, and the great musician that sounded similar to Jeff Buckley on Thurs, we really enjoyed ourselves :)
