Great local breakfast place. Order the cinnamon roll. Sit at the counter.

This is my favorite place to eat. I haven't had anything I didn't like here. My favorite to eat is the eggs Benedict on Sundays and the bacon swiss mushroom burger. VERY cheap food. Waitstaff isn't the best, but the food is wonderful.

Great place and great food. There toast is awesome. The yelp menu is out of date on price but still good. 2 eggs, hash browns, and toast or pancakes was 4.99 not 3.25

Heading for I80, we stopped for a quick breakfast and were able to accomplish just that. The staff were friendly and you could tell this diner has been there a while--it was like clockwork. It seemed like a lot of local families when out of there way to eat there which says something positive. The pancakes were good and they knew what I meant when I asked for eggs scrambled soft. I missed giving the 4th star because once our waitress placed our food we never got coffee refills and had to hunt her down for our check. That said, if you're on the road, this is worth the stop.

My boyfriend and I stopped in at J & L on Monday when we were on our way back north and east to Nebraska, and we were craving some serious coffee and maybe something small for a breakfast food to ride us over till a proper lunch time. When we entered the building, all of the staff looked up from what they were doing and we were greeted by at least two people. Our hostess and our server were super friendly even though we were basically just ordering coffee. And let me just say that the coffee is wonderful. Our server kept our mugs full of the delightful elixir and it was fantastic. If you're eating breakfast, order coffee. So good.

I'm a fan of mom and pop diners and Doug Y pegged this one perfectly. We'd been at the North Sterling Reservoir Park - beautiful in November - and popped into J&L for a Saturday Night Special. Not that kind. The chicken fried steak kind. O.K. we'd eaten at Linger on Thursday and this was a 180 degrees squared from that. We started with an excellent ham and bean soup and were intrigued by the ham in the green beans. Jazzed up the canned variety. The service was friendly, ambiance very non pretentious and the food showed imagination. Tres was wrong about Cisco Foods; the stevia in the raw packet said Shamrock Foods. Visit J&L Cafe and the North Sterling Reservoir Park for a piece of Americana far from the madding crowd.

Greasy spoon. I come from a restaurant family that owned a greasy spoon in Denver back in the 60's and 70's and so I say those two words with much affection IF the said g.spoon is a good un. This is a good un. They won't win any James Beard awards or be in any magazines touting there haute cuisine but they sling hash browns and eggs, biscuits and gravy, meatloaf and canned green beans just like most of the good g-spoons did back in the day. This joint is old school. If you ain't learnt about old school, you just plain don't know now do you.

I keep going back here. This month I was here twice. The staff is exceptionally friendly and youthfully enthusiastic. It is reliable fare. I order things I get nervous about and then wonder why I was nervous. Plus, they always have a lot of different pies. The specials and the menu items are predictably American Diner. Take all your guests from foreign countries here...they'll be amazed.

Ok place. I was impressed with their menu. And excited about ordering the omelette with lots of veggies and cheese. Who knew the cheese was nacho sauce. I wanted nacho sauce I would have gone to my kids baseball game. DISGUSTING! The menu should have reflected the type of cheese. One would assume "cheese" would mean a dairy product.

This is just the kind of place I look for! An old roaside diner, worn and frayed. Talk O' the Town mom and popper, ham and egger. Alas, that's how this place LOOKS. The truth is so very sad. Its been around since the 1930's and in this location since the mid 1960's. But the tradition does nto translate fine or even average food. Everything here is sub-par, and probably made in via converyor belt at Cisco Foods. Bland, dreary fare with canned corn and pre-formed patties . AVOID

We came on a Friday night at 6:30 so of course we expected it to be busy. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table. When the hostess sat us, she informed us they were short staffed and it would "be awhile" ... It was! Probably 10 minutes before anyone took our drink order. By the time my food came out it was room temperature. To me it all seemed microwaved. Good prices and friendly service.

Decent roadside diner. Good prices and good food. But the orange juice was just awful.

I needed a break this weekend, so Sunday I decided to drive the Pawnee Pioneer Trail. The eastern terminus of said trail is in Sterling, and it was here I stopped in for lunch. I was looking for something local and, if possible, good, so the chains on Main St. were out. I ended up settling on the J & L Cafe, and boy did I make the right decision. Sunday at noon and the place was packed, mostly elderly couples but some younger folks too, and quite a few families. Apparently this is the place to go after church! Booths and tables were full, so I took a seat at the counter. Ordered a coke and the 3-piece fried chicken special. The meal I got was enormous. Salad, 3 gigantic pieces of moist and delicious fried chicken, a baked sweet potato (!) with butter and brown sugar (!!), stuffing with country gravy, green beans (probably canned but eh), and a roll. All of this, plus the drink, cost me less than $10. And it was scrumptious. I had to get a to-go box since I simply couldn't fit all that in, or else I might have tried a slice of their pies. If you find yourself in Sterling, you could do a lot worse than the J & L cafe. The place has good food at good prices, and it has character - which is more than you can say about Arby's or Taco Johns.

A variety of choices. Surprising how good the food was compared to the first impression when pulling up. Very nice staff - glad we stopped there!

This place was fine - the burger I had tasted good, but I wish the bun was toasted, and the fries, while good, I'm pretty sure were just generic oreida crinkle fries from the supermarket. The waitress wasn't the most genial, either. However, I really liked the ambience - it's been a while since I've been in a diner like that.
