If I wanted to cook my own steak then I would buy a piece of meat and cook it on my own grill. I will say that the waiter was very friendly though.

    1. You pay inflated prices for an unseasoned steak that you have to cook yourself. 2. There are kids everywhere putting their hands all over the salad bar and Texas toast. 3. The place is old but it is literally falling apart.

I just don't get this place. Why would I want to cook my own steak? I do that at home. And it's not clear from these reviews or the website that it's cook your own food. For twice what I would pay at the butcher shop. Just don't get it. Waiter was rude because we had a hard time understanding the cook your own food at first. Would never go again but it it'll be fun to crack jokes for the next few years to who's ever in the car with me as I drive thru Dillon about the time I paid $30 to cook my own steak.

This place is outstanding! My wife and I have recently moved to Summit County and the dining scene has been mediocre at best. After a friend suggested we try the Mint, we figured that we had nothing to lose. Our gamble paid off with dividends! From the moment we walked in the door the superior customer service began. De made us feel right at home with a well-poured drink and a warm Summit County smile. Then, it was Christians turn. We were 'educated' on the house grill and a few other insights that turned us into grill masters! Fabulous food, superior service and now, new friends are what have solidified The Mint as, our spot! Thanks again De and Christian! Luci and Dane

This is a really fun restaurant - my kids loved it. They have a delicious salad bar and you have the opportunity to cook your steak just like you like it. The only downside is that it is pretty expensive. However, you get free unlimited salad bar and Texas toast. That helps with purchasing sides. :)

Absolutely amazing service. Go see D at the bar who was extremely accommodating and the food was great. Our server Brad was very good and helped us get set up at the grill where we will grilled our own ribeyes and strips. We were very impressed!

Expensive, slow, casual dining in a funky run-down atmosphere. You must make your own salad and cook your own entrée on a big open grill. It was hard to find a spot on the grill that was hot enough to grill my Cajun spiced steak. Had to take it back twice to get to medium. I don't grill at home because I'm not good at it - and for these prices they should cook your steak the way you want it cooked. The salad was OK and the Texas toast was...meh. Our waitress was awful. She didn't explain the concept at all and since it was our first visit it took us some time to figure out how to order at the meat case.

Horrible dining experience! Came here on my birthday. After finding out I had to make my own steak (probably not a good idea to let me cook anything lol), I couldn't get too mad because we were passing through and probably should've known if I were local..??? However, then we met the waiter, who was practically sweeping us out the door the moment we sat down. My boyfriend told him it was my birthday and we were all excited about having some good steak. The waiter didn't seem to care much and he gave us the run down real quickly. Then I found out I had to make my own salad too, which is OK but I kind of wanted to sit and relax. After very vague direction, we wandered up to the meat counter/ cooler case and I was kind of shocked at how much one steak was. We informed him (another person behind the counter who was more concerned about hanging out with his buddies behind the bar) we were going to split one and my boyfriend decided to just get the shrimp skewer(the cheapest thing in the case) and the guy got all mad and kind of made us feel embarrassed because we didn't get 2 steaks! He said he had to charge us for an extra salad bar fee?? It was an awkward moment. Needless to say, my steak turned out terrible because I am not a great cook and by the time I asked for help it was too late. The fries I ordered were hard ( I didn't have to cook them) and they never once acknowledged that is was my birthday. The bathroom didn't even have stall doors it was a curtain that sat in my lap! I didn't like that. We paid way too much for what we got... The waiter hurried us out from start to finish. I was kind of upset when I left.. :( Had to have another birthday dinner the next night to make up for it!!! I will not be returning ever!!!

After me and my family go snowboarding we are wiped out and go to look to kill some time for traffic to clear. We spot Mints. We give the place a shot with our family of 7. We were surprised we had to cook our own steaks. Decide to give it a shot, you're thinking if the food is good? Well of course! I cooked it. So if we cook then you'd think the service would be better since no one is cooking your food....we had to wave down our waiter a few times for his attention. The price was sky high when I can go to Costco and do the same thing for $100 cheaper. So because they only had small 10oz steaks we decided to split them for the 2 youngest kids. They charge us a extra $5 because of that. I'm sorry but for a big family and paid $200 for something I had to cook don't charge us for something trivial. We don't eat out often we never pay that much. I'm shocked. We should have just got up and left.

If you are looking for fine dinning and someone to cook your food for you, you are in the wrong place. The Mint is in a historic building and guess what it looks old and beat up on the inside. That's what gives it, its charm. Its pretty awesome to be honest. Grab a plate and hit the salad bar. Grab another and hit it twice or three times. Big ass pieces of toast that you can grill up and make Texas Toast on the grill. Head up to the counter and pick the slab of meat you want and cook it on the grill while chatting other friendly people sipping on a drink. Sounds good right! Where else can you get a box of Mac & Cheese as a side. I'd love to see some good pork chop cuts and more options to season your meat with at or on the grill.

The Mint is what it is, essentially a theme restaurant. The theme is grill whatever the hell you want, but yeah, you're the one doing the grilling. The real question is does this appeal to you? For me, the answer is a clear yes. I love grilling my steak on the giant grill. I love getting it exactly the way I want, I love seasoning, I love marinating, I love rotating. I just think it's an awesome idea. I like making my own Texas toast. I like getting an extra pan to make grilled vegetables. Pro-tip, with a little ingenuity a baked potato can become potato skins. I think the quality of the ingredients is high, and everything comes out tasty. I don't consider this work or being forced to do my own cooking, It's essentially a steak fantasy camp. The service was friendly, if a bit frazzled. The restaurant is called historic, so the fact that it feels dated isn't a surprise. It could probably be freshened up a bit without losing the historic character. I guess it's the difference between something feeling antique and just seeming old. Still, The Mint is a unique experience and if that appeals to you, don't hesitate. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

I used to be a fan - in the past 6 years I've been more time than I can count. However, my most recent experience was so thoroughly disappointing that, unfortunately, it will be my last. The NY Strip was chewy, the wine was vinegar, the fries were hard as rocks, and the croutons were stale. In short, failure at four independent variables. I can accept that any restaurant will have off nights, but when every course and item simultaneously fails to achieve a quality standard then it's a sign of bigger problems. Regretfully, moving on.

The Mint has as very unique concept in terms of the American dinning experience. You choose the type of meat you want and you get to cook it yourself. In many Asian cultures this type of arrangement is quite common. One might ask, what's the point of going to a restaurant when you have to cook it yourself. The answer to that question is simple, it's about the experience. Going out to a restaurant does not only encompass the joy of the food itself but also the experience. So, if you were ever interested in grilling, the Mint is a fun way to experience it without having to buy a grill. Step 1 - you choose your choice of meat which ranges from new york strip, rib eye(my personal choice of meat), chicken, to fillet Mignon. Depending on the cut and size you order will determine the price. The higher cuts of meat being more expensive while the lower cuts of meat being cheaper. The prices are between the meat you buy at the local store and your steakhouse restaurants. Step 2 - Grill your meat. This is where all the magic happens. The restaurant has a very large rectangular shape open grill that is shared by all the customers. There are your normal seasonings like salt and pepper, but also butter and teriyaki flavor to season your meat. I personally prefer dry rubs when it comes to grilling steak. The most important part of grilling is the temperature. The grill has different temperature points so you have to be mindful of whether there is too much or too little heat because you wouldn't want to burn your steak. Step 3: This the easiest of them all. You get to enjoy eating your steak. Sides do not come with your steak, they come with a charge. However, there is a complimentary salad bar that comes with the meal. Overall, the Mint is a fun place for the family and for those who are looking for a different dinning experience.

Great place, awesome old west feel. Steaks were really good. Had the New York strip, twice baked potato, and the signature dessert thing. So good. The cook your own thing is fun and different. We loved it.

So I never understood this place. You pay super inflated prices for a salad bar and raw meat. Then you have to do all of the work by creating your salad and grilling the meat. Well, they do refill the drinks, so I guess that is worth the tip??? No thanks. After I ride, I want to have to work done for me. Seriously people, do you really go on vacation to grill your own steak???????

  • Connie L.

The idea that you cook your own meat is cool... But I went with a group of 100 people, and waiting for the meat to cook was very uncool. I tried to cook the snapper, and that snapper will not cook if it's at the edge... and the person helping cook didn't tell me that until I asked. (then he helped me finish cooking it, which was great.) The spices on the snapper wasn't that great either. The sweet potato fries were ok... the artichoke dip and calamari were mehhhhhhhh... When we got here, there was a firetruck here. Apparently just moments before, there was a small fire... and I heard white stuff was still dripping down the ceiling and onto some meat during cooking time. The staff was good though at taking care of a 100 person group.

The Mint in Silverthorne doesn't look like your normal expensive steakhouse. It has a large dive bar feel, but given it is a locals spot - that makes sense. The Mint in Steamboat Springs has a nicer feel, but that location has the disadvantage of not being off I-70 on the way back to Denver. At the Mint, you get free salad bar access, reasonably priced apps and sides, but you must cook your own entree. This means steak. The raw steaks are priced a little lower than what you would pay for the same quality cooked at nicer steakhouses, but the prices on the fish and chicken are just ridiculous. A double breast of raw chicken goes for $11. Plus chicken is less forgiving of mistakes than steak. Seriously, just buy the steak. I ordered a nice size ribeye at $2 per ounce and was very happy. Normally they trim the fat, but they left it on for added flavor - and the fire the rendered fat produced was awesome. I took a ton of pictures. It was glorious. But in all honesty, if you follow the times recommended (give or take a minute), you will have a nice meal.

What a great place and great food. I was blown away by the great service and atmosphere! The steaks were high quality and well priced, cooking our own steaks with great guidance and they turned out excellent! Artichoke and asparagus were fresh and cooked to perfection. The twice baked potato went down great with some local beers!!! Will be back!!

Great concept, could be really cool... The building is really old which I guess is part of the lure, however it needs a good cleaning. It's super dark inside which is probably a good thing considering you can't see the dirt. The food is really pricey for what you get...not sure I would go back.... I've checked the box

Stopped by on a locals referral. The food was awesome and the staff even better. We had the 16oz New York, prime rib, filet, and chicken all excellent. It is a lot of fun to hang out around the grill with the family. I can not stress how nice the staff were, this building is from the 1800's. A must stop for anyone in the area.

Loved this place! Small, but plentiful salad bar. Texas sliced bread that you butter yourself and put on the grill to toast! Pick out your own piece of steak (several cuts), fish (several varieties including trout, tuna, salmon and shrimp), or chicken. Take to the grill, season to your taste, and cook to the temperature you like best! There's even a sign on the wall telling you how long to leave on the grill depending on what you have. And don't skip dessert! I don't recall what the name of it was, but we had an ice cream ball rolled in cocoa, with chocolate and caramel drizzle and whipped cream, topped with almonds. YUMMY! Will definitely be going back again......SOON!

An amazing restaurant with cook-your-own-steak and an all-you-can-eat salad bar. Mint has a playful atmosphere that inspired me to try to make a grilled cheese sandwich in between two pieces on Texas toast that I grilled myself. It turned our pretty well and I had a lot of fun cooking and eating my meal!

Know what you are getting into before you go. It's cook your own steak with all you can eat salad bar and options for sides. That's about it. Very casual place. Not inexpensive. Group I went with would have been mentally better prepared if we knew what we were getting into. Couldn't find a menu or website online so we weren't. Might have been OK had service been better. Waitress gave unclear explanation of what the process was so there was confusion. Drink orders slow and more complicated than it should have been. Were expected to pour our own waters. No big deal but then were slapped with mandatory gratuity when we basically did all the work serving ourselves and cooking our own food. Some guys in the group liked there food. Personally had the worst prime rib I ever had in my life.

Incredible service, very friendly staff, amazing food. Pick your own protein (steak, chicken, shrimp, salmon, etc), cook yourself (the staff is more than happy to assist!!) and incredible wine! Will definitely be visiting again!

I love this place. I cooked my steak rare 12oz for 8mins (4mins ea. side). James was very helpful and so was the rest of the staff .From the moment you get there, the staff tells YOU have to cook your own steak. The salad bar is small, but really good, and you have as much salad as you want.

My good friend raved about this place on his last stay out in Silverthorne. Based on his suggestion, my two cohorts of mayhem and I descended upon this little gem of a steakhouse. It's no frills at all. Simple concept; you walk up to the glass display case, choose your meat and cook it yourself on the grill. Sides are ordered there as well. Sitting in the middle of the restaurant, the long lava rock grill cranks out over 1100 degrees of heat. Once done, a salad bar is at your disposal and complimentary to your meal. I had ordered the Ribeye at $2 per lb (you choose the thickness, they'll cut it, weigh it, and hand it over to you raw). Once I proceeded to the grill, I had a merriment of seasonings and spices. I eventually chose to baste my steak with their teriyaki mixture. The other two picked the 8oz bacon wrapped filet mignon for $26. Tricky thing about this is... yes, you cook it the way you want it. However, if inexperienced, it's easy to get it wrong and/or overcooked. While I had fun brushing my steak back and forth in teriyaki marinade, my ribeye came out medium and not medium rare. Same thing occurred to the others. At that point, I wished a professional had cooked it. We also ordered mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. Nothing special, very straight forward sides. After all is said and done, my steak tasted great. I was happy with my meal and the price. What's not to like? Where else can you get USDA Prime steaks that cheap? Now if you don't like it, you have no one to blame but yourself... you made it!

What a great time!! If you like to grill your own this is the place. Great staff, great quality meats, awesome side dishes & home style atmosphere . Grab some meat , a cocktail & belly up to the grill for a good time!!

Kind of cool I guess but if I'm going to a restaurant at this price point I want my food cooked for me. The appetizers were really good though!!! We tried all of them

I was visiting with my husband in Dillon, CO (west of Denver just over an hour on I-70). What a fun place! You can order steaks, kebobs or chicken to cook over a communal grill with other customers. It's fun and social. Some folks were not very good cooks, so watch your food well. A plaque on the wall tells you how long to cook each cut, and a clock is nearby for reference. They also have a nice little salad bar, all you can eat. We loved our entrees, both quality cuts (and did a fine job cooking it, thank you--took longer for the kebob than the prescribed time). The atmosphere is cute because it's an old, historic building. The original Mint was, I think, built in the town of Old Dillon. But it had to move when the entire town was destroyed to make a reservoir on that exact spot in the early 1900s. We walked out of there very full. It is a very popular place!

I came here with family after a long day of skiing, I needed mass amount of protein and it was a family member birthday so we decided to give this place a try based on the good reviews it got on yelp. Interesting concept. Basically you pick out a steak and grill it yourself and everything is a la carte. Decor was rustic to say the least and the prices were on par for Mortons, which was quite shocking. $30 or more for most steaks, so be prepared to spend around 50 bucks a person. The steaks are dry aged to perfection, I had a hand cut ribeye 16oz with a baked potato. I will say its pretty fun to grill it yourself. My meal was very tasty, but it should be since I am a grill master. You also get all you can eat salad bar (gee thanks for that, since I paid 50 bucks for a steak and potato) I like the Luke H. description of Redneck Hibachi.

The Mint is one of the most awesome steakhouses in the world! The Mint has the FRESHEST beef in the world and many different cuts, all at their butcher stand - from there, you select your piece and cook it yourself - granted, some may not enjoy the cooking part, but the quality of meat, as well as the variety of cuts, is something to be marveled The staff here is also the best in the west, treating everyone like family! ENJOY ALL!

Went here with my co workers. I was a little freaked out that i have to cook my own steak but it all worked out. I got the dry aged rib eye with was excellent. They provide you with seasoning and everything you need to cook the steak the way you like it. There is also a decent salad bar that comes with your steak. Its pretty expensive though but it seemed well worth it but maybe that's because i wasn't paying...

Choosing your own steak is great, cooking it is OK too, but I typically prefer the seasoning steakhouses use. I think the grill wasnt hot enough, so my steak was a little rare, but still good. The aged strip wasnt as tender as I hoped for. They had a great salad bar, not iceberg lettuce like someone claimed. Great steakhouse ranch! Good selection of microbrews too.

Just had the worst dining experience of my life. My wife and I went for the prime rib. Happy hour was advertised as 4:30-6:00 so we arrived early and started with drinks. My wife ordered a whiskey sour and I ordered a local micro brew which I expected would be on tap since it was listed as one of three local beers served. My beer arrived in a bottle and they brought her a bourbon and water. When the waiter returned we told him it was not what she ordered. He offered to have the bartender try again but she said to just bring her something that was on the menu---a strawberry dacquiri. Even though the place was almost empty we waited and waited. Finally the bartender returned with a tall glass of pink slush and asked if she wanted whipped cream on top of it. We thought he was joking until she tasted it after he walked away and discovered there was no alcohol in it. They still charged us $5.50 even though it was happy hour. My beer cost $5.00. We killed time at the salad bar waiting for the prime rib to be ready. The salad bar was mediocre and probably violated the health code since a lot of the items were uncovered. The silverware was crummy. The tines of the fork were so dull they would barely punch through my cherry tomatoes. We told the waiter we wanted prime rib and showed him the ad promising a super deal with the ad. He said the prime rib was $2 per ounce and the smallest cut was 10 oz. We asked to share one cut and he convinced us to get a 12 oz. He did warn us there was a $5.00 sharing charge, which was fine with us. We like rare roast beef but when this rib came it was so raw we had to throw half of it back on the grill. Also, he said it was over 12 oz. It came with nothing else on the bare plate. The waiter mentioned that he would be back with some au jus and horseradish but we finally started eating so our meat would not get cold. Eventually, another waiter did bring us those; then our waiter finally returned and asked how we liked the horseradish. I pointed out that it was hard to serve the au jus without a spoon, but he just laughed and went away, never to return. He also said, as we were halfway through our meat, that we had not ordered any sides. He had never mentioned sides until that moment, and I told him a potato would have been nice it was too late now. He disappeared with no apology. Another member of the staff seemed to recognize our displeasure and gave us a local discount on our drinks---$1 off per drink. Overall, the place was a huge ripoff, with quality restaurant prices for mediocre food and terrible service. We will never go back.

I'm not sure how I feel about this joint..... its OK for the main course... steak that you pick out at the meat counter...you can't complain about how the steak was done because you cook it.... sides are average and salads are from salad bar hell... Service is pleasant, there is a reasonable wine list of OK value so there is really nothing to complain about if you're looking for a C+ steak house. I guess I was just grossed out watching guys grilling slices of Texas toast into oblivion. Gotta keep exploring the wilds of Silverthorne for something better. I can't get whipped into a frenzy about the Tibetan place (tsampa any one?). Maybe the carnicera is the place to go... any suggestions?

Redneck Hibachi. I went for the $2.99 strip steak night. It was worth the change, but I'm not craving a return. Check for the monthly $2.99 steak night, and get there early...like 4:00pm early.

Be prepared to make your own steak, but that way it is exactly as you wish! Check out the Summit Daily for their specials. We have been to the Mint on both trips to Colorado, and it will continue to be a "must do". Great service, all you can eat salad bar and Texas toast. Don't come here if you aren't open to grilling your own steak. Don't come here for fancy steakhouse atmosphere and a fancy salad bar. Do visit if you want to hang with the locals and have a great cut of meat. The meat is what shines. Prime Rib is amazing!!

Cook your own food! Assuming you have some grill skill, the steaks are good. Personally, I'll just go to the grocery store which has a better salad bar anyway.

Great Bar! If you're looking for a local bar to grab a few drinks before you go shredding the next day, this is the place. I asked a few locals where I could go grab a drink and beat the crowds, each time "the mint" was suggested. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try for Bone in Rib Eye or the local Trout, but I really enjoyed the friendly hospitality from the staff. The service and atmosphere in The Mint was outstanding! Try it out and I'm sure you'll walk away with the same opinion.

Beat the crowd by getting there at 530. Odd that I discovered this by the "Food" Highway sign. Great choice of steak, you select your own and you grill your own, salad bar and Texas toast included. Friendly staff. AS you are your own chef on the steaks, if you don't like how you cooked it, that's your problem. Full service bar. I really enjoy this place, my only complaint...too far from home for me.

Stopped at the Mint in Silverthorne on Sunday night after a long day of skiing...I think we were the first to arrive upon opening because the place filled up pretty quickly after we arrived around 5:00 p.m. Basically dining here is like shopping in a butcher market wherein you select your steak or sea food, then prepare it yourself on their grill. The prices for steaks or salmon ranged from $17 to $28. With every entree you get a complimentary salad bar and bread (fresh and delicious). The appetizers were primarily a choice of seafood, varied potato dishes, boxed mac 'n cheese or stuffed mushrooms. The food was decedent, but for the prices and the ambiance, which resembled that of an old cabin, I expect better.

Fantastic local restaurant with a lot of history and a fun concept. We go there every year when skiing anywhere in Summit County (and have for over 20 years). The meals are a bit pricy, but they use great cuts of steak. They are very crowded though; everyone loves this place, and you can tell.

  • Braden D.

My rating is based on our dinner experience. I am sure that John H. is spot on when he says the best way to enjoy this locals spot is to have an order of sweet potato fries and a cold PBR at the bar, but we opted to have an entire meal of food during my visit. Pretty much what everyone has said before me is correct and accurate about The Mint. While I actually enjoyed cooking my own steak, I found that the waitstaff only marginally helpful and they did not at all add to my enjoyment of our meal / experience. I guess that is what happens though when that 18 year old burnout can't move up from the salad station into the kitchen ... they end up waiting the tables. Anyway, the steaks were of high quality and while perhaps slightly overpriced for a "cook it yourself" joint the all you can eat salad bar, Texas toast and the reasonable prices for drinks and sides more than make up any price disparity for the main course. To be clear, I didn't care for our waitress but my group had a really fun time celebrating a birthday and was even able to retire to the bar for digestifs after our meal. If you are with a large group or it is a special occasion where an activity like gathering around a large communal grill sounds like fun and you don't happen to have a BBQ at your house then I highly recommend The Mint Historic. Otherwise I would opt for the Sweet Potato Fries and PBR at the bar and pick up some nice steaks to BBQ on your way home ... (Also, they get a thumbs down for not accepting American Express)

Don't expect fine dining or service, but it's at least a great experience with delicious steaks! I think my favorite way to describe the atmosphere is cowboys meeting a dive bar - with a huge hot grill in the middle. You have an option to chose from the "visual menu", and you select your choice of meat. Overhead has got to be low since you cook your own entree, but don't forget to include toasting the thick white slices of bread too (Texas Toast!). The salad bar is totally standard - but it's a good compliment. They also have standard, hearty sides and appetizers, too. I went here with my boyfriend the first time, and we had fun. We took our friends from out of town the following weekend, and we all agreed that it's a great time! One note - the prices add up, so don't think you're paying a low price, just because it's not "high-end" inside! But the quality of meat is worth it!

Just got home after experiencing locals night! We own a timeshare in Dillon and saw the ad in the free local paper which was described earlier in a review where price is 2.99 for meat and also 2.99 for all you can eat salad bar. Our 1st mistake was not going early when they open at 5:00. They do not take reservations. We arrrived a little before 7:00 p.m. and it was a madhouse. Turns out there are two doors both on the front of the building. We went in the wrong one apparently because there was no host in sight. And people were coming in after we had been there through the other door,(north one) and getting their names in when we were still trying to figure out what the deal was. Another person waiting for a table explained there was a guy running around with a clipboard and to hunt him down to get on the list. He was very hard to find because he was taking names, seating people which also has an upstairs, AND bussing tables, which made it even more of a madhouse. It was packed with people waiting for tables in the bar area. We ended up sitting right at the south door,(wrong door to enter) with the door wide open and freezing to death. After some people lit up their cigs right outside the door we had had enough and shut the door but kept getting open when people would leave and we would again have to shut it. At one point a waitress came by and said my son looked like their bouncer sitting right at the door with his arms folded. He is a big guy and was dress in black like the staff. That was the only enjoyable part of the wait. After almost an hour, which was shorter than they had said because many people got tired and left, we finally got a table. Bad things: Couldn't get a salad plate unless you stood in an extremely long line at the butcher shop. They didn't bring clean salad plates for all you can eat salad refills so people were having to use their dirty plates to go back which was very disgusting. The salad bar was filthy due to so many customers and lack of enough help The serving spoons were sticky and very unappetising feeling after so many hands on them. . Butcher shop kept running out of steak and there was not a runner staff to refill, butcher guy had to leave a line of at least 30 people to go to the kitchen and get more steak. What a pain! Not much choice of meat. Only new york strip, shrimp kabobs, chicken pieces, and one type of fish. Very noisy, so packed you couldn't get to the bathrooms or around people with your raw meat. Our waitress was nice but had to hunt her down for refills on water. Good things: Only cost us 28.00 for 4 people excluding tip. Guys got 2 meats, sons girlfriend only got salad bar. Drank water. Tipped waitress pretty good even though we had to cook our meat and go to salad bar but she was nice and in a good mood. She told us next time to come early or late, it was clearing out a lot when we were leaving. Meat was good and if you could get over the sick feeling of watching people reusing their salad plates and the mess, the salad was good! Advice for The Mint: Get more help,it is impossible to have good service when one person is taking names, hosting, seating, bussing and running like a mad man up and down. There were empty tables all over but people not being seated because he couldn't keep up. Also, separate the main areas where people have to gather so it isn't so congested in one spot. Very poor planning on layout of place. We ate at the Minturn Country Club which is the same plan and it was so much nicer, quiet, and peaceful. It wasn't locals night but I feel they would have been much more organized. We will only go back on locals night if we get there before they open at 5:00 p.m.

Warning: You cook your Steak! Off the highway on the way to the ski resorts located in Silverthorne, The Historic Mint has a cool concept which is fun and can be great, but can also be depressing. When you walk in and get seated, you can pretty much start where ever you want. Options are either salad bar or meat case. My suggestion is to hit up the salad bar first and get that out of the way. Once you reach the meat case, you'll meet the butcher who will go through all the types of cuts of meat you can choose from and their prices. If you are lucky, you'll have an option to get unlimited prime rib that's already been prepared (I'll get to that in a minute). Once you pick out your cut of meat, you get it handed to you raw on a plate. From here you proceed to an actual grill located in the middle of the restaurant. Typically it can get very crowded here. The grill features some different sauces and seasonings that you may use. You are given some slight instructions about how hot the grill is but there's definitely a learning curve with any grill. The hot hot sections are directly in the middle with the lower heat sections on the outside. There's some suggested times posted on the wall for cooking but rarely are they accurate. At the grill, more than half the time your up there, there will be little kids flying around the grill. The big thing they do is take up space and cook up Texas toast. Everyone thinks it's a genius idea to take bread off the salad bar and toast it up with the steaks BUT it's been done. Although it's tasty, the bread takes up a lot of room on the grill. This is the tough part. Getting your steak to come out exactly how you want it. You either don't cook it enough and have to keep going back up while everyone else eats OR you over cook it and you waste a pretty penny on a bad steak. Both are depressing... Steaks depending on the cut run about $20 to $40 a cut. They also have chicken and fish available. Sides are ordered a la carte from the server which will have them out when you are finished cooking your steak. Beware the All You Can Eat Prime Rib! They only cook sooo much a day. We arrived at 6pm one evening and they told us they had plenty. So we went and ate salad and then when we went to order, even though they had half a roast just sitting there, we weren't allowed to order it in case people that already had some got more. Honestly this ruined the evening for us. The next year, we called ahead at 5:30pm to see how much they had and they were already out of it for the evening. My advice, up on going here, assume you will not be getting the AUCE Prime Rib. Don't get your hopes up. I think with parties of 5 or more, they charge 18% to 20% gratuity which kind of sucks because you do all the cooking and you prep your salad. BAH! Over all, it's a good experience. You can always just have them cook it for a small fee.

An old fashioned twist on the basic concept of a steakhouse is what The Historic Mint is. A purportedly very old establishment that certainly looks like it was a bar at first, and a restaurant later, it moves toward answering the question "why do you have to go out just to eat a steak?" Steak is an interesting thing, you can buy it at any grocery store (and would be hard pressed to spend more than $15 a person) but yet we still pay upwards of $40 for what is essentially a bare piece of meat (just like the one at the store), but cooked for us and served by someone. The Historic Mint aims to capture the market between those two markers..it is a steakhouse where they provide the meat, but you cook it. The cost of your hunk of meat (which is not cheap, ranging from $22 for a strip to $39 for a dry-aged bone-in t-bone) includes an unlimited salad bar, and 'Texas toast' (which is basically just thick sliced white bread). Sides, drinks, appetizers, and dessert is extra (usually $5-10). So for about 20% less than a cost of a typical steak at a steak house, you can get one here, but the catch is that you have to cook it yourself. And there in lies the 'unique' experience the Mint flaunts. You get to cook your own steak! For all the men in the place, each believing themselves to be the king of cooking meat over an open fire (sorry ladies, we are convinced that we are experts, no matter how bad we actually are, based on the lame idea that we've been doing it for 40,000 some odd years, and should have learned how to do it by now), you get a wealth of 'this is how you cook dead animal' insight. The plus here is that you get to cook your steak however you want it. The minus, of course, is that you're probably no expert and that expensive blacked dead cow is your own fault. I felt that it was overall a pretty fun experience. As a guy, I love cooking meat, and of course believe that I am good at it (see above explanation), so this offered me an opportunity to cook some really quality meat to my liking. I picked up two piece of meat for my three person party, a dry-aged bone in t-bone (mostly because dry aged steak is hard to come by, usually very expensive, and very flavorful) and a NY strip (as a 'baseline' of sorts since it is such a ubiquitous cut). Both steaks were delicious and and I was happy with how I cooked them, but I did have some gripes. For one, the open fire grill that was offered for cooking was way too cool (around 300 C, about 200 C too cool) and space was a premium. You also had to make sure you remembered which meat was yours, since the grill quickly crowded with other diners' steaks. For another, we ordered some sides, which were supposed to come out 'when our steaks were done' but instead came out when we were done with out steaks. Close, but a little late. Overall, it was a decent experience, but a little expensive at times (although compare it to a luxury meat market, like Lobels, lobels.com , and it comes out on the cheaper side). Definitely worth checking out if you are the type of person who likes to be involved in their dining experience, but doesn't want to clean up afterward.

My friend and I came to this place after reading some reviews here suggesting sitting at the bar and getting some Sweet Potato fries. We ended up sitting at the bar and ordering a PBR, but were intrigued by the variety of appetizer choices. My friend and I had a peek at the meat in the case, but I don't eat cow, so I wasn't interested. For seafood fans, there isn't much here. A filet of Alaskan salmon for 19.95 that you have to cook yourself, or a kabob of shrimp for the same price is really disappointing. But we weren't there for the cook for yourself experience anyway. It was somewhat annoying that there were no prices listed for the appetizers- our bartender let us know that they were all between $8-12. We ordered the asparagus, mussels, and coconut shrimp. They all came out very quickly- the asparagus and mussels were quite tasty. The coconut shrimp was nothing special though, and I was not a fan of the sauce that came with. All of that, a shot of whiskey, a coke, and a PBR came out to about $40- not too bad for two people. I really liked the atmosphere- it's got wood paneling and all, but not too divey, just that old western feel, especially on the outside- it's quite charming, and our bartender was really friendly. I'd definitely come back here for drinks and appetizers, but I would never ever eat a steak or seafood dinner here.

Its known as a steakhouse, and it sure as hell is, but the Mint is best enjoyed if you never make it past the hostess stand. No, I don't mean turn around and walk out. I mean saddle up to the bar, order yourself a PBR and a basket of sweet potato fries and then call me to tell me when you're going back, because you'll want to. Sure, you can go the distance and get a table to experience the "cook it yourself" cornerstone of the business. But if I'm gonna spend $40 on a steak, I want at least some burnout who worked his way up from the salad station behind the grill. If you want dinner and don't want to cook, grab a table and have a good time. If you get one by the fireplace its even better. If you just want a couple of beers and some snacks after a day of riding, far away from the nonsense and high prices of the resorts, the bar at the Mint is the best place in Summit County.

We went for local's night, and had so much fun! My fiance and I ordered waaaayyyyy too much food and ended up bringing home a couple of boxes which is totally legal even on local's night! So, as others have mentioned. Local's night consists of $2.99 meats. Whatever they have is $2.99. The advertisement in our local paper said 8oz NY strip steak, mahi mahi, shrimp skewer, teriyaki chicken or lemon chicken. They had more options than that when we got there, beef kabobs (big!!), salmon and I think maybe something else. So, like I said. We ordered way too much food. I went for a surf and turf theme with a steak ($2.99), mahi mahi ($2.99), a salad ($2.99) and sweet potato fries (I think maybe $4). My fiance ordered 2 steaks ($2.99 each), salad ($2.99), curly fries (again, maybe $4) and between the 2 of us had 3 Sunshine Wheat beers. I brought home my steak and we both brought home a ton of fries (if you order these - SHARE). We got away spending only $48 including tip, and we tip well. Next time, my fiance says he's going to order 4 steaks, a pitcher of beer and nothing else. I would probably skip the starches, even tho the sweet potato fries were great, and stick with my surf & turf and salad. I overheard that they do charge for soft drink refills, but it's only 50 cents. If you are the type to down 6 cokes with your meal, this might not be the place for you. So great review - why only 4 stars?? Our waitress suuuucked. We didn't get any water - even after asking for it. We waited about 5 minutes before she even showed up at our table, as we watched the line for the "butcher shop" grow and our chances at getting the best selection of meat, dwindle. 2 tables of people were seated and put in their orders before she came over. My fiance ordered a 2nd beer, and she went and flirted with the table next to us for the next 5-10 mins. When she turned to walk away she saw us both staring at her, got a quizzical/confused look on her face, then the light bulb went off and she hurried over to the computer thing to put in an order for the beer. Next time, we will not sit in her section - but there WILL be a next time!! ETA: The cooking it yourself experience was fun! There's a certain camaraderie that comes with having a bunch of people crowded around one grill. I received lots of laughter and one complaint (from fiance) when I said "you watch the meat I'm gonna go drink my beer". Everyone was really great about moving their various meats and texas toast around to ensure newcomers could fit on the grill. Watch where you put your steak though, there are some colder spots that cause uneven cooking.

Ten of us went to the Mint two weekends ago. We were exhausted after a long serious day of skiing and VERY hungry. The waitress came to our table and told us how the restaurant worked. Apparently, there were only two things that they would actually cook for you. The Prime Rib, which was over $30, excluding sides. There was a fish as well, but that was also pricey. I was exhausted and really took issue with the fact that I had to PAY over $25 for a steak with no sides and cook it myself and bring it back to my table. If I wanted to make my own dinner, I would have taken my buffalo tenderloins from my fridge and put them on the grill at the condo. The cost: $5.50, NOT $25.00!! We choose to get ourselves salads from the salad bar, which consisted of iceberg lettuce, some passable dressings, about six different veggies (cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.) and white bread. Now you can get a salad bar at Whole Food for $5.99 a pound and I consider this pricey, but at least it's HIGH QUALITY. This salad was $7.00!! And the quality was a 1 out of 5. I was starving, so we tried to order appetizers, which we heard were cooked for us (like a normal restaurant). They ranged for $10 - $12. (The waitress told us they were half that, thank god, we had her check exact prices.) We passed. I ordered a baked potato with sour cream for $4.25 (and I didn't have to cook it.) I wound up sharing it with my boyfriend, since the waitress ignored him when he wanted to order his own. The coup de grace was when the waitress presented a bill with 18% GRATUITY INCLUDING THE MEALS THAT WE GOT OURSELVES!!! I have no issue playing for quality. I frequently eat out at restaurants like Vita, Kevin Taylor, etc. But I won't pay those same prices for LOW quality. Take a pass on the Mint!!

A wonderfully hokey bar / restaurant, the Mint features a slightly skewed restaurant model: you pick your meat, you grill it. Simple as that. You're first led past a slightly seedy watering hole, bear traps and other hunting paraphernalia lining the walls to a table, a long booth lining the wall. After you get your drinks and appetizers, a waiter / waitress gives you a ticket to pick your cut of meat at the very butcher's shop-esque display. The selection is good, and the meat itself is fantastic, ranging from simple sirloin to the most expensive Kobe beef (around $60). After receiving your cut, you move to a very large grill, rectangular in shape with ample space surrounding. At busier times, actually claiming a spot on and around the burner can be tough, but people tend to be nice and let you squeeze in. After you've cooked your meat to your heart's content, you sit down and eat it. Nothing fancy there. The Mint is a fun experience for anyone up in Summit County near Silverthorne or Dillon. Word of caution: this place is VERY vegetarian non-friendly. Not that vegetarians are shunned, only that there are next to no non-meat options, and those that do exist are appetizers.

"Yes, that one..no no...THAT ONE..right there... yeah that's the one." That's how my "pick your steak and we grill it" experience went. It was awesome!
