Forget the advertised homemade muffins! The day we were there there were no muffins available until long after checkout. And they were not homemade but long wrapped in cellophane. Person at desk was not welcoming or helpful

Wonderful, warm, inviting, the Box Canyon Lodge & Hot Springs is a little slice of nice. The lodge definitely has that "Switzerland of America" look on the outside, as well as with the layout of the four hot spring guest tubs. The staff was great too!

I can't wait to vacation here again. The private hot springs pools, clean cabin-like rooms, walkable from town, exceptional customer service....I could go on and on. This is like a little fairy tale dreamland, perfect for a couple looking to get away for the weekend. Shockingly, it's also affordable. Can't wait to go back! -Rachel

I stay here for a week every January to ice climb with friends. The rooms are clean and well appointed (perhaps a bit dated in decor, but whatever). They have microwaves and mini-fridges. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. Most importantly, however, is that this place is the main headquarters for ice climbing heaven. Probably the two best things about this place, however, are: 1) This is the closest hotel to the Ouray Ice Park. I literally wake up in the moring, fix myself a quick breakfast, and walk to the park. It's maybe 200 yards away, and there you are, in the thick of it. 2) There are natural hot springs behind the lodge, set up in several levels of soaking tubs. 3) It's a 10 minute walk to the heart of downtown. Oops! That's three things, isn't it? Well it's true. You really don't need to drive when you stay here. Here is what life is like at Box Canyon Lodge in the winter: Get up and walk into the ice park and climb all day until you're totally knackered. Walk back to the lodge, change into swim trunks, grab a cold beer. Walk to soaking tubs. Soak in the hot mineral water drinking beer looking at a winter wonderland. Contemplate dinner. Walk into town and eat. Go grab a beer somewhere. Go back to your room, sleep. Wake up. Repeat.

Crap, crap, and more crap. This place is the most overpriced, least value-for-your-dollar place in which I've ever stayed. Basically an overpriced motel, don't be fooled by the seductive photographic marketing and slick description. Nothing to recommend here, save your money and go somewhere else. I paid $185 for a room which was worth about $85 on a good day. Breakfast? Forget it. It doesn't exist. Convenience store muffins and weak coffee. Trust me, find another place.

This place is absolutely awesome! We stayed at another hotel in January 2013 and it was good just didn't have as much to offer as Box Canyon Lodge. We stayed here in November 2013, the breakfast is cheap but I didn't care about that at all. They have hundreds and hundreds of movies you can borrow for free each day. The hot springs are awesome and they come with your stay, but can get crowded during peak season. The staff is very courteous, the rooms are great too. I love to come to Ouray, to hike, soak in the hot springs and just relax. Box Canyon Lodge really helps with that. Its a must when in Ouray. I will stay here from now on.

Ouray is gorgeous, totally worth visiting. The hot tubs in back of the hotel are a luxury worth using, especially since they're free. The hotel room was clean, quiet. The bed was a little too squishy, but there's a coffee maker in the room and some tv stations, if you need that sort of thing. I agree with the guy who said the temperature was always "just right", which is impressive for a hotel. Also, free wifi. The continental breakfast in the morning basically consists of muffins, juice, and apples, but the muffins were surprisingly good! And a variety of flavors - pumpkin spice with chocolate chips, lemon poppy seed, yum! And there's free parking. Overall, very pleased with this place, plenty comfortable with friendly service and no problems to report.

Brought my family here for a little get away from the city. The lodge is beautiful! They have amazing flowers everywhere...on the rails, by the windows, hanging from trees and by the hot tubs. These flowers bring in lots of hummingbirds. My daughters loved them...they thought they were little fairies flying around and thought it was the neatest thing. The hot tubs are great because they are small and quaint. There are three of them and they fit four comfortably. The hot tub on the top of the hill is the warmest and we were lucky enough to be in there when two deer and a little baby deer walked by and ate at some of the lawn. Again, my girls were blown away at how close nature was to them. At the top of the hot tubs is a little flat piece of earth that has two picnic tables and a swing with a wonderful view of the Ouray and the amphitheater. The room we stayed in was very clean and everything worked well. The fan was quiet, the air conditioner was also quiet, but not even needed at night due to the wonderful cross breeze if you opened the windows. The shower uses the same geothermal water that they use for the hot tubs, so there is always hot water. I also loved the shower because they have a swing out rod so you have more room in there. (I hate taking a shower and the curtain gets all on you...not a problem here.) The owners, Rich and Karen Avery who I met one morning in the lobby, are delightful. They were able to recommend some great local places to be sure to visit with the entire family and were also able to share several different locations that we could take our girls for a hike. They also made our stay even better by providing some wonderfully current choices of DVDs to borrow so we could have a family movie night in our room. We even bumped into them while we were downtown and they greeted both girls by name and discussed the hike with them....awesome customer service. Highlights for the Box Canyon Lodge: Great coffee in the morning (they roast it themselves...see Exotic Earth Coffee Roasters) Super clean rooms. Clean grounds....never saw any trash, weeds, or anything out of place. Non-smoking throughout. Closets downtown, without having to deal with the traffic or parking of downtown Several hundred free DVDs to borrow Quiet location 200 yards away from the coolest free hike through The Box Canyon....beautiful. Owners that are locally proud and support surrounding businesses Owners that are environmentally conscience due to their cleaning products, recycling efforts and their soaps and shampoo selections that they provide. Nice breakfast snacks to get you up and ready for the day...the muffins and coffee are great and you can take them with you. Safe, well lit grounds. Good parking...again I felt my car was safe. Flower lovers paradise. Softest sheets I have ever had in a hotel. Wonderful customer service and the entire staff is respectful, polite and engaging. We will be back. A side note....everyone that goes there seems very friendly. We chatted with a great family of four that was traveling through from Nevada and a couple from Texas. We all met and had a glass of wine outside one of our rooms and then had dinner together while downtown. Nice people were here the entire time. I think with the way that The Box Canyon Lodge is set up (the flowers, the respectful staff, the cleanliness, and the fact that there was nothing wrong with anything that you saw), the customers that stay there are also pretty awesome. Don't be afraid to chat with a few others...you will make a friend.

One of the best places Ive stayed in a while. We arrived at 8:00 pm. The gentleman in the lobby was super helpful and made us feel welcomed. He mentioned a place to eat breakfast so we could get a discount. He also offered to upgrade us to a suite but we declined, as we were only staying for one night. He did move us near the river, which was peaceful. The hot springs are some of the coolest Ive ever been in. There are 4 different tubs and they each seat 4 adults. They are only available to guests, which is nice. The star gazing is amazing. The room was clean and comfortable. Well worth the money. I definitely plan on staying here again!

Awesome location, good staff, comfortable beds, great room set up, and hot tubs. Location is right by the entrance to box canyon and it was great getting up and going hiking on the trails. The room was well appointed, clean, comfortable bedding, nice towels, and included a fridge and microwave. There was a bit of a fly problem and boy are the toilets situated low for someone over 6 feet tall. The hot tubs were nice and clean, and busy during the mornings and evenings. They had a small breakfast spread each morning with pastries and such that was nice. Staff was helpful but the one we checked in with was a bit distracted (there wasn't anyone else in the lobby and no phone calls) and forgot to inform us of a few things that necessitated a return trip. Overall, enjoyed the stay and will return.

Had a lovely time at the Box Canyon lodge. Even though they were experiencing computer problems & could not locate my reservation, they quickly accommodated me and even gave me a nicer room for my trouble! The staff was courteous, kind and professional. David especially went out of his way to make my stay fantastic and memorable.

I was definitely coming here based on the great reviews and the awesome front desk lady when I called. However, my bed must have had a really large person sleep in it before because all the springs rolled me into this dent in the bed. The tubs are very cute but I couldn't figure out how to NOT have the jets go on. The breakfast left much to be desired. For some reason I thought I was getting waffles and eggs... Instead I was left with a choice of muffin, tomato/orange juice and red apples. I took a muffin anyway but will end up having to go to breakfast. It's more life "Bed & Morning Snack" the town however is awesome and quaint! Can't wait to the pools.

Tourist trap? Absolutely. So is every other place in Ouray. It's over-priced, but every place is during tourist season. Expect it to be busy and noisy, no matter what day of the week you are staying, if it is tourist season. 10:00 on a Monday night and folks will still be outside partying it up. The hot tubs are quaint, but small. There are five or six, and seat two people comfortably, four if you know each other well. Expect to wait awhile to use one, which is awkward - watching other people relaxing and hearing their conversation while you sit wrapped in a towel on a bench nearby. There are a lot of places with private hot springs. Not sure this is the best. The rooms are very average, motel style, with the most basic of amenities. Don't expect luxury, even for the luxury price you'll be paying.

I've been to Ouray twice, for a week both times, in the winter. Both times I stayed here. So while I haven't stayed at any other places in town, I've lived about TWO WEEKS OF MY LIFE here. And I really, really liked it. The rooms are very cabinesque without feeling kitschy or cliché. They don't look like the same 'ol boring white-walled motel rooms with the same crappy paintings in every room. The temps in the rooms always seem to be *just-right*. I don't like excessive artificial heat, and at the same time the last thing I want to come home to after a day of ice climbing is a cold room. The bed was cozy and made every day. The hot tubs here are the most unique I've ever been in...they are pretty much big*, wooden barrels! There are a couple different levels/temps of them. Quarters are pretty tight which means you should: A) know your neighbors well B) be willing to *get* to know your neighbors well C) be very comfortable with yourself. Personally, I think it's great and the jokes write themselves. Ice climbing** is not exactly a female-heavy endeavor so the margins can get...marginal. The staff here is fantastic! I come here with an increasingly large group of mountaineers from Portland and it always (look at me, talking like I've been coming here for 20 years instead of 2) feels like coming home. The staff is always extremely helpful with everything from "where can I dry my rope?" to "Where's a good place to photograph Ouray" to "can I get some more coffee?" It seems like at most hotels/motels I stay at it's a chore to talk to the staff, here it's something you actually look forward to! I'm already looking forward to coming back next year... *big for a barrel, not for a hot tub **speaking of ice climbing, this is the CLOSEST motel to the Ice Park! You can walk to/from the park and not even have to worry about driving, *BONUS*

This was our first time staying at the Box Canyon and we were very happy with our experience. The man who checked us in was friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. It's been a long time since I've stayed on a bed more comfy than my own! The soaking tubs were a treat after dinner. The setting was ideal with the mountains around us and the fall air to keep us cool. We can't wait to come back again!

The rooms are clean and the location is good. There are 6 or so wooden soaking tubs and Ouray is a beautiful town. The breakfast is weak. 7-11 type plastic wrapped muffins, apples and canned juices but the coffee is OK. I paid a C note for an off season king. The staff is a bit indifferent. They don't take AMEX. Wifi is decent. Cable is limited - about 10 channels.

It's been a while since I visited the Box Canyon Lodge, and as strange as it may be, that's actually why I'm reviewing it. I visited Ouray a few years ago during the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and we couldn't have had a better experience. My friends and I arrived after a long weekend and were greeted by a cheery staff, beautiful accommodations, and an incredible setting. It's rare that a hotel/lodge/motel stands out enough to make a lasting impression but The Box Canyon Lodge did just that. We were fortunate enough to meet the owners of the lodge and it was clear that their influence was everywhere. Incredibly involved with the success of their establishment, and friendly as can be. I hope to plan a trip to Ouray again soon, and when I do there will be no question as to where I will stay.

We spent a night here during a long camping trip...a chance to get a shower and plan the rest of the trip. Despite being super busy, the front desk went to great lengths to find us a room and make sure we were squared away. The rooms are simple, but clean and well appointed. My wife made a bee-line to the hot springs, just behind the hotel. There are a lot of places to stay in Ouray; the people who run this place make it special.

I love the fact that this lodge is not on the main road through the town. It's tucked up against the mountains, which means it's very quiet without a lot of noise from traffic. The rooms are adorable (they have a kind of log-cabin feeling to them). My hubby and I LOVED the hot tubs fed by the natural hot spring water. We soaked in them every night after a long day of hiking or shopping. I recommend this place to everyone I know!

Such a cute little place. Visited last minute at about 830pm at night. They close to the public at 9:45pm. First went to the Vapor Cave and man was that HOT. You literally can only spend maybe a max of 20 minutes in there....but it was awesome and absolutely beautiful! Then we headed upstairs to the outside springs. The only reason I did not give a 5star was because the outside springs were very nice, but it was in a pool like atmosphere. I kind of would have liked it to be more natural looking....it looked like a regular swimming pool with natural water in it instead. However, it was soooo nice and relaxing. Met a few people while in there and everyone was very friendly. We lost track of time and didn't realize it was past 9:45 and so when we went in to change we were locked out of the locker room area. However, the owner heard us and oh my goodness....she was the sweetest lady EVER. She let us in to change and then spent about 20 minutes giving us the history of the lodge and springs. It was fascinating to hear all the stories. Definitely would visit again if I were in town!
