El Meson Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

We have lived in Highlands Ranch for almost two years and have yet to find decent Mexican food. This place is no exception. The service is slow, the food is bland and scant for the money they charge. It's awful and we'll never be back. I'm all for supporting small business, but the service and food they turn out here is flat out terrible. We had the fajitas and the combo plate #1. Both dishes lacked any seasoning and again, were disproportionate for the cost.

I had wanted to try this place for a long time since it is so conveniently located on the north side of Highlands Ranch and there aren't alot of Mexican restaurants. The place had a good atmosphere and was clean (very clean bathrooms). The menu wasn't bad --- pretty large selection, but the food was just OK for the price and unfortunately the service was a bit slow and not all that friendly. All that said, I'll give El Meson another try.

We love El Meson. Chicken tacos and the Carnitas platter are the best! Friendly staff and great drinks. Service is a little slow but that's because it's family run and operated. Tres Leche cake is amazing!

Great margaritas and fajitas! The chips are light and crisp and the salsa was fresh with a little kick. Tried their new chicken dish, Pechuga Rellena, and it was amazing! Hugo and Amelia are so friendly and have created a great authentic dining experience.

This is to discredit those unfair, demanding patrons of a great but not 4 star restaurant. This is a mom and pop shop. The food is excellent! We've been coming here for almost 5 years. Everything else here compared to California did NOT compare! They have multiple restaurants but are not the same owners. First, you people who come in on a homecoming night and demand a reservation, shame on you! Second, to demand a reservation and occupy 20 seats that were NOT occupied for at least an hour but holding for on a Friday night, again shame on you! Praise the small business owner, especially a restaurant! It is no easy feat, but they do it and do it their way, the Hispanic way! Get over it and get ovet your Primm a Donna self! I'm so SICK and TIRED of you people who come here with high expectations. GO TO THE F'N RITZ if you want people to bow down to you. Look up the International Business life for Mexico and maybe you will have a better understanding of Hispanics and how they conduct business. We accept it and are grateful for true Hispanic homecooking!!! PS remember, YOU are treated the way YOU treat people. Think about it! BTW, you SOB, don't come back! If I see you HERE again, I'll be sure to point that out to you and your friends! You rave about the food but the minute your $300 check came, you had nothing but complaints! You're an asshole, i hope you LOVE yourself! After 2.75 hours of your shit, please DO NOT RETURN! I CANNOT TAKE MUCH MORE OF YOU AND YOUR BS! Do not come back you cheap ass take advantage of... SHITHEAD!!!! Yeah, I'm sick of you and your primmadonna self. Your wifes are more manly than you! Yeah, a low blow!

Finally, I found a good Mexican restaurant close to home. The fault is all mine since this place has been here for years. I just seldom go to this part of Highlands Ranch. The enchiladas a la crema with chicken are dynamite! I now crave them. (Also available with shrimp - haven't tried that version yet.) A bit pricy at $15 but so worth it and can end up being 2 meals they're so filling. On my last visit I tried the Mexican hamburger. The chili cheese fries swayed me. Also very good. The strawberry marg was nothing special, but the house marg is pretty damn good. And the tres leches cake could be delicious if you eat it right away. I made the mistake of getting it to go and letting it sit a day and it got soggy, so don't do that. Yummo!

El Meson is a great place to go to for lunch or dinner. It's not overly expensive and they have a lot of great items on their menu. It's a very colorful place and well kept. I've never seen it super busy but then again I've never really been here for dinner. The Mexican hamburger is smothered with delicious green chili and you really get your money's worth. It's hard to find lunch places that are moderately priced these days that are worth the price. I've been here lots of times over the course of a decade because the quality is always great and satisfying. My only problem is that the salsa is watery. As a salsa maker myself I personally like more texture. It's spicy for sure but too thin. I recommend El Meson though! Its great!

I had the pork enchiladas they are the real deal, very tasty. Chips and salsa are right up there with the best I have had. If I lived here this would be one of my go to spots. The staff is very nice and attentive.

My husband and I have gone to El Meson many times and have not only been satisfied with the food, but extremely satisfied with the friendliness of the staff. I don't understand why the negative reviews. Someone suggested going to Dos Los Potrillos for authentic Mexican food. My husband likes the quesadillas there, but if I want good enchiladas or guacamole, I will not go there. Considering it is owned and staffed by hispanics (of which I am one), they don't seem to know the first thing about how to make authentic enchilada sauce or good guacamole. El Meson does.

This place was great! First time here. Brought our 3 kiddos and they were so nice! Food was great. I had the fajitas, others had the carnitas. Everyone enjoyed. Margaritas were yummy! Will be back!!

Nice, clean and neat place. Menu is large and the food is good enough to return. If you're a big eater, the portions are very large. So overall good value.

Expensive for quality of food, margaritas not great and servers weren't excited to have customers. Seemed like we were a bother.

Ordered food to go from here and it honesty is the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I'm not going into details because there was so much wrong , it's hard to list. Take it from a chef of 17 years, you're better off eating elsewhere.

Go somewhere else. The food was below average, the prices high, and the service absolutely stunk! Here's what we ate: - Bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed jalapenos - this was an appetizer but came out along with our dinner 30 minutes after ordering. My fiancé thought they were tasty and good! - Combo plate #5 - crispy chili relleno, hard shell taco, and enchilada - all very mediocre. I love chili rellenos and this one wasn't worth the calories. - Quesadilla - my fiancé said it was okay. - House margarita on the rocks - meh. Tasted like sweet and sour - where was the tequila?? The bill came to $43.00. Not worth it.

I would honestly give this 0 stars if possible. DO NOT COME HERE. I drive past this place daily and we were so excited to try it. We decided to go on a Friday late evening. I saw some reviews before going about the slow service but we decided to give it a shot. We eat authentic mexican all the time and yes, they are family owned and usually slower than chain restaurants. Well.... the reviews were right and the service was horrible. We never got an actual waiter..... it took forever for someone to come for our drinks. The same lady was answering the phone, working in the kitchen, making drinks, and doing everything else possible. They might only have two employees at this place. We ordered appetizers and meals. After getting the salsa, we were excited. I will admit the salsa is DELICIOUS and authentic. Too bad it only went downhill. We asked for more salsa.... didn't get it. After 50 minutes, we never got salsa, appetizers, or food. Not only that but we ordered queso! Can it take an hour for queso? I saw other tables order, eat, pay, and leave in the time that we just sat. After an hour, we gave up. We asked for the bill and they refused. How can they refuse? The food still wasn't ready and one lady admitted that she "forgot" to put in the order. Why don't you tell us instead of hiding it? All in all, the service is poor and they are understaffed. The salsa was good but I have never seen a restaurant run worse in my entire life. We never got checked on and they basically refused to give us a check. What kind of place is this? I'm really sad I have to write this review because I was really excited to potentially have an authentic mexican restaurant down the street. Don't come here. You will spend hours and waste your time. I would never come here again and feel sorry for those that don't read the reviews. Like the others said, getting water or salsa is a chore. I had to basically wait for myself. Pathetic.

Like a few others have stated, I don't know why this restaurant has received bad reviews. Really?!? I've been to - what seems like - 100's of Mexican Restaurants over the years all across NA, and El Meson ranks right up there in the top 25 for what they do, serve quality, affordable, delicious Mexican food at a reasonable price inside a clean, family friendly environment. Check that box! I defy you to find better house-prepared Salsa; it arrives at your table loaded with fresh onions and cilantro. I defy you to find better Mole Sauce that's prepared from scratch using an old family recipe that's been handed down throughout the decades. Bottom line: This restaurant cares. Period! They take pride in serving you the freshest, most authentic Mexican food in CO, and I for one can appreciate that. This is why I continue to place El Meson at the top of my Local List when I'm in the mood for Mexican grub. Do yourself a favor, ignore the negative criticisms; perhaps the reviewer(s) had a bad day. Perhaps the restaurant was off their game that particular day.....it happens, but I'm telling you, these people take pride in their art and they do a darn good job of making sure you keep coming back. Mole baby!!! Mmmmmmm!!!!

I live in Highlands Ranch, close to El Meson and I so very much want to like this place. We've been 3 times and it has never been good. In fact bad. Terrible service each time, no one wants to refill chips and salsa and even getting water is a chore. Our food was just so-so once and just not good twice. I really really wanted to love this place, but we likely won't be back. To be fair, we do have friends that like it quite a bit! I'm not sure why they do as I have tried to make it work.

Oh my goodness, this place was a bad choice. It used to be a great place to get a Mexican lunch fix, but I didn't live up to my expectations today. I ordered fajitas, expecting a marinated flank or skirt steak. What I got instead was a horrific, tasteless meat...rolled in flour instead of lime and cumin. The only thing I could tastes, seriously, was flour. The salsa was great. Above average, for sure. But the beans (I don't eat them but I tasted them so I could share with you) were cold. COLD. I won't go back.

After several bad experiences at multiple Mexican restaurants recently, we instantly stopped at this place for a quick bite to eat. I immediately noticed how nice and welcoming the staff is, and the food was great. Very clean environment and family friendly.

We try to support local businesses, but usually drive past this place. We finally decided to go in with some friends on Friday night. The service is awful, the food is pricy but good. We had to ask multiple times for water, our check, etc., never once did anyone actually wait on us, we had to flag someone down for everything. After waiting for 30 minutes for our check, I finally flagged down the guy that took our order (presumably our waiter although we had only had him wait on us once)...he asked if we wanted to order another round of margaritas. We would've had we not been waiting 30 minutes to do so. Instead, I asked for the check and told him that the food was good but the service was awful. He told me that they got hit fast and hard. Now, this place has been in business for a while and it was Friday night just outside of Denver so that's not a shock to them. I think they must be family owned and operated and don't have enough staff and won't hire additional help. My guess anyway. We will not be back, ever. Service was that poor.

Went out to lunch with the boyfriend on a Friday. We'd always seen it and it was close to his job. Figured we'd give it a shot. Well, the guys he works with who are Mexican told him it was a bad idea. He will now listen to them when they recommend Mexican food. The place was nearly empty at noon which to me is never a really good sign. I got some steak tacos. Well, I thought they were steak. The meat came out like hard, black rocks. The lettuce tasted like it had soap on it. Tortillas, well, they were chewy. Hint: they should never be chewy. Boyfriend had a burrito smothered in sauce where he could eat rice and beans to fill himself up. I am thankful I didn't get food poisoning from whatever they had to wash off my lettuce and we will never be going back.

Awful. Went in for dinner with our children. We watched from 10 feet away as 2 waiters argued over who had to wait on us. In the end, the HOSTESS did. She brought us water, took our order, then never came back. We had to ask for our bill at the hostess stand as we were walking out. Never again.

I'm honestly shocked to see bad reviews about this place! My husband and I ate here for our first time tonight. I ordered something I have never tried before- The Mole Carnitas Enchiladas Plate, it came with beans and rice- price was $14. A little more than I'd expect, but worth it. The beans were a bit runny but flavorful, the rice was normal everyday spanish rice, the mole enchiladas were AMAZING. I couldn't stop eating them. The flavor was so good, it hit the spot!!! We ordered the bacon wrapped jalapenos for an appetizer- they were decent. I was expecting a cream cheese filling but it was like cheddar jack. (My husband ordered them I did not) I only had one my husband ate the rest. He thought they were awesome. My husband had Combination #4- I just asked him what he thought; "it was delicious" He also had a giant margarita that he said was "very well done, good flavor". An appetizer, 2 entrees, and a drink PLUS tip came to $55. More than I planned on spending for dinner, but well worth it. The staff was VERY nice. They could have been a bit more attentive- I hate having to ask for more water when I'm at dinner (Especially if my water glass is the size of Texas) and I think when dining Mexican you should be offered more chips and salsa when they see you are out not have to ask for it. I will definitely go here again!

My husband & I live in Highlands Ranch and eat here all the time! We love the food and the owners are fantastic! Whenever we feel like eating Mexican food, we always go here. Sometimes the restaurant is crowded and at other times not. I think it just depends on the time of day or if there are events happening in the area. I have food allergies and they have always been wonderful with custom-making my food. This is a great place for really good homemade Mexican food!

El Meson used to be a 4 star place in my book for when I had to go to the Highlands Ranch office. This is the place the ladies and I eat lunch; somewhere we could get a good bite to eat for about $5.00. ($4.65 to be exact). The service was good and the chips served hot with a nice salsa. However, on Friday, I picked up the ladies for a bite to eat and a bit of gossip before we had to attend a long ass meeting. We knew something was wrong when we were greeted by the owner and handed new laminated menus (no paper lunch menu inside). YIKES!!!! Our nice little lunch had gone up to $7.65 and the service had gone down 75%. We asked for guacamole to be served with the chips, it finally came seconds before our meal but the owner took the chips and salsa away to be refilled. They finally came back when we were eating our meals and the guacamole was browning and after asking twice. What used to be my favorite chili rellano looked and tasted like some pre-formed thing you would get at Sam's Club. No wonder the Friday crowd had dwindled to 3 tables. El Meson, I am sorry but you have earned yourself a shame on you. You still get one extra star as your chips, salsa, and a Negro Modelo would do in a pinch when I am in Highlands Ranch. However, the ladies and I will be looking for a new place to lunch.

I eat here about once a month and have never had a bad experience. Coming from So Cal, my family & I seem to have a different taste for Mexican food than most Coloradans but we like this food just fine. IMHO, this beats the Tres Margaritas places hands-down. The service has always been fast and friendly. The interior is clean and inviting, if a little small. The menu has lots of good choices although I've more or less settled into a rut; I almost always get the carnitas plate. It's warm and juicy and just a little spicy. It comes with rice & beans and I ask for yummy flour tortillas but it normally comes with corn. My honey gets tacos of one sort or another and they always look good too. Some of the other reviews on here are pretty old. I can't believe they're referring to the same restaurant I go to now. I recommend this place for lunch to all my friends.

This is by far the worst Mexican food I've had in Colorado AND EXPENSIVE! We have lived here for a while and are originally from Texas (where Mexican food is far superior). Yes, I said it. How on earth can you NOT know how to make Chili Con Queso? Seriously! They served us a small cup not a bowl (to the tune of $6.50) of a ball of stringy cheese that was the consistency of taffy mixed with water which must have been melted in the microwave. Queso dip should be smooth and ummmm you should be able to "dip" something in it. It had no flavor, no peppers, nothing in it The salsa had giant pieces of cilantro swimming on top, blech! I ordered tacos and the meat had no flavor, completely tasteless. My husband had a cheese enchilada on his combo platter that I tasted and I have no idea what kind of sauce it had on it, but it tasted chalky and weird. It was not any kind of enchilada sauce I have ever tasted even here in Colorado. Everything was bland and tasteless. Yuck!

    - Nice decor. Very bright and cheerful with a more youthful/trendier vibe than other more traditional/sketchier Mexican places. - Super nice server. Very friendly, welcoming and extremely attentive. - Extensive menu but if you're into tongue/brain/eye dis

I have a 3-Strikes-And-You're-Out rule. Let's just say El Meson is on their second strike. We live in Highlands Ranch, and haven't found a good Mexican restaurant since we moved here from California. I'm a Colorado native, so I know how good Denver Mexican food can be (Bennie's in downtown Denver is amazing!) It's a little tough to find good Mexican food in my new city (I mean, HELLO! I'm one of the 12 Mexicans who actually live in Highlands Ranch!) The first time we went to El Meson, we had to wait for-ev-er to be seated. It seemed like it was only the owner and one waiter who were working. The waiter is super nice, but the owner, well, let's just say she should be a little more welcoming of people who are putting money into her pocket. We finally sat down and drowned our hungry sorrows in a margarita. Much better. The waiter took our order (I swear, they only have one... it's always the same guy waiter whenever we dine there), and fifteen minutes later, we had our food. The food was good, but I suggest not getting the beef. It was stringy and tough. The chicken is fine, though. I always get the chicken enchiladas and my husband has discovered the chicken chimichanga. The food averages $8 - $12 a plate. Like I said earlier, this restaurant is on it's second strike. However, I suggest you order a margarita if you visit--it makes the looooong wait not seem so long and the mediocre-to-good food go down a bit easier.

My family and I got an extremely large take-out order from this place recently. The waiter who assisted us was very friendly and got everything 100% correct (even though there were about 9 different orders forming the whole). The salsa and chips are amazing, as were the carnitas. Everything was fresh and satisfying.

Terrible service. Went with our family and it was our first time. It's like they try NOT to give you more chips or salsa? Even if you had a chance to ask for some, you shouldn't have to. We had 4 employees walk by constantly and didn't refill water or offer more chips or salsa. It's just obvious and they did the same to other guests. I was never offered another marg either. We asked for our check and immediately provided the server with our credit card before she ran off and she never came back. We went to the front and asked if we could please get our card back as we wanted to exit the restaurant and the woman said that they already gave it back to us. We had to insist that the waitress had it for 10 minutes before the argumentative woman finally produced the card. Too bad their service is way below par because the food was good, the salsa especially good. It's more expensive than we normally pay for comparable restaurants by a few dollars, and every side is an add on so you have to ask, does it come with that? Good service wins every time with us above even mediocre food so we won't return.

My husband and I are from California and looove Mexican food. My husband's from Mexico originally, so he's hard to please in the mole-department. It's great here - not the canned Dona Maria garbage. The owners are from Mexico as well and they occasionally mix up the menu with some pozole or a taco bar. We go a couple of times a month, and the owners make you feel like family. Seriously, we know all their names.

Wow! Now this is Mexican home cooking! My wife and I visited El Meson on a Sunday after church and were not headed in this direction at all. Actually we were thinking more of the typical Sunday brunch (Le Peep, Egg & I, Village Inn) and for some reason these didn't sound too tempting. Needless to say we drove from Parker through Highlands Ranch and ended up at El Meson. My wife had heard of the place from a co-worker before as being a great spot so we ventured in. The smells as soon as we walked in put me back in my grandmothers house on Sunday mornings. Fresh tortillas, green chili, and beans filled the air as we walked in and knew this was almost heaven. We were promptly seated in their dining room, which I can see becoming crowded during lunch or evening dinner service, but this morning things were pretty open. Fresh chips and salsa were brought to our table still hot from the oven. These chips seem to have been baked vs. fried, but I could be completely wrong. Upon devouring our delights including machaca with eggs and chicken enchiladas, we sat completely satisfied and wanted to know more. Our server let us know that the family running El Meson is directly from Mexico and brought in their home grown menu items unchanged to Colorado. I can certainly vouch that I've not had the pleasure of eating Mexican food this good in Denver ever. A place where the smells and tastes take you back to grandmas has to be this good.

My husband and I go here often. We speak Spanish, so we chat with the staff in Spanish which is fun, although all the main servers speak great English. They know us by name and actually have our orders memorized. We've found the tacos de carnitas to be so fabulous that we rarely get anything else now. Carnitas are flavorful, fresh, lightly seasoned so the pork really comes through. Service is very quick. Dinner is $10-15, while lunch is $8-10, unless you order a la carte. Dinner portion comes with rice and beans. Lunch portions sometimes come with sides, but lunch is supposed to be lighter. Guac is tasty. Chicharrones are fresh and bubbling out of the frier and some pieces include a little bit of pork as well. Queso is homemade, not processed yellow, and good but not my fav. Chile rellenos are crispy or soft to order. Green chile is tasty for smothering, but not something where I would order a bowl. Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Go for the tacos de carnitas and your life will be better, I swear.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
