This was our first time eating at Black Hat. In fact, we had not heard of this restaurant until we received a gift certificate. We took the short drive from Denver and parked at a small parking lot 100 yards away from the entrance. We loved everything about this place. The owner, Davis greeted us at the door and showed us to our seats. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. We lived the grilled artichoke. Our steak was perfectly cooked and the side dishes yummy. Oh, and fresh baked bread- who doesn't love that! The atmosphere was nice, not too loud. We had made reservations for 7:00 on a Friday night but we did not need them. There were customers in the restaurant but it was not full. We will be visiting the Black Hat again!

Service, decor, ambiance were all fine. Let's get to the meat (no pun intended) of the review. I ordered the aged comboy ribeye. I've had aged steaks before and this meat was not aged. I prefer all my meat, and especially cowboy ribeyes, to be at least 1/2" thick. This steak was very thin and not seasoned. An average steakhouse at best. I wouldn't recommend making any long trips to this restaurant. I feel you would be disappointed.

Food & service were both first rate. We had a reservation but was unnecessary on a Wed. eve. Rib eye special, however, cost $40!

Okay- here goes: I live in the community above Black Hat and have given the place five tries simply due to location convenience. The first time we went was for my birthday dinner and ordered the steak & lobster. I ordered medium rare- the steak came out medium (close to medium well) and the lobster was rubber. I am not one to make a big deal out of my food in restaurants especially on my birthday as we were having a great time and that can just be a big buzz kill. AND I am not a big picky person- so for me to write this review means- yep: this place sucks. BTW: The final ticket was $140- in no way was it worth it whatsoever. The second time, I go with a girlfriend for happy hour and Cassie the bartender was fabulous- therefore I resolve it can be a happy hour stop, not necessarily high priced dinner spot. Remember- I live 3 minutes away so I can be reasonable. The third, fourth and fifth time all sucked. The third time, the new bartender was being trained (where's Cassie??) and apparently the kitchen cook was too because she had no idea what the happy hour Slider menu consisted of, took a guess and wrong-o. I was told it was grilled chicken with sweet potato fries. Nope. It was pulled bbq pork and regular fries. I don't want to get into my eating habits, but the grilled chicken and sweet potato fries fit into the Paleo (sorta) eating. So, back to not being super picky, I eat it. And the fries weren't even cooked- they looked as though they came off of another plate....from like three hours prior. Back to not eating at Black Hat- not even the happy hour menu, and resolve "how bad can they screw up a dirty martini?" Remember, I live 3 minutes away and the the place is convenient. The fourth and fifth time just sucked. The service is horrible!!! and the martinis aren't martinis. So, I talked to the owner. I explained everything I just said on here (in summary and without the sarcasm) and he said "okay." Smiled and said "okay." I looked at him waiting for something more. Nope. Last night was the first time in my entire life I left a big fat $0 tip. I'm telling you. Don't go there. Do.not.go.there. You're welcome.

Cowboy cut , ie bone in ribeye expensive.basically inedible .thin, under cooked. Extremely undercooked, loaded with fat and gristle I asked the waitress to return to chef. She seemed annoyed, but hey! I am quite reluctant to send food back or complain but this was bad in their credit, they did not charge me Do not expect much here I would suggest others in the area

Food was pretty good. I had the salmon, vegetable medley and baked potato. Baked potato was good, Salmon was good, nice and simple but a tiny bit fishy, and vegetable medley was amazing. Boyfriend had some cut of steak. It was good but a little over salted he said. Had the apple pie for dessert which was amazing. Inside was a touch dark with a Southern/Western decor feel. Nice dark wood work, and so many people wearing cowboy hats. Overall a nice experience without having to drive down the mountain.

My husband loved this place and introduced me to it. I always felt it was overpriced for what you got. The last time we ate there it was just awful. The server was rude and slow. We order the ribs dry because my husband doesn't like sauce (we share), so his ribs were ok. There was something very wrong with the sauce they served on the side (it tasted moldy). Well, the waiter (who had been horrible throughout the whole meal) NEVER came back by the table for me to complain. I ate my sides, but figured I'd rather eat the meat tomorrow at home with BBQ sauce than eat them dry at the restaurant. Both of us had completely finished eating by the time the server returned. My meal was certainly ruined. When the waiter finally returned, he didn't even want to hear about the problem. I can't believe we tipped him! The next day my husband emailed the owner (a first for either of us...we were just that mad and disappointed). The owner did respond, and actually apologized. But what floored us was that he didn't say, "hey, we'll buy you a glass of wine or a dessert to share next time you return." Nothing! Certainly not the way to retain a good customer. At least he could offer us a $5.00 comp for the fact that our meal was completely horrible and the waiter acted like he was doing us a favor to finally get our meal on the table. We will never return. Get your act together! You can't keep a restaurant in business with overpriced adequate food and staff who make you feel unimportant.

Wonderful atmosphere - great host, waiters and their attention to detail is impeccable. Steaks, seafood, wines...just the best.

Not for those looking for something complicated like such found in Denver. Rather, this is for those who enjoy great quality steak with taters. The ambience is set with lighting that is gentle on the eyes, soft country music, and beautiful Bev Doolittle paintings throughout. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon or stopping in after work to relax and enjoy amazing food. I must mention that the staff here is very professional and warm welcoming. I'll be back.

This place has the best prime rib I have had in CO. The location up Bear Creek Canyon is a beautiful setting. Over all the service was good and the food was delicious.

Not super impressed, or worth the expense. My $40 plate included a filet that was so over cooked it had to be sent back and the replacement was 20 minutes later, after my wife finished her meal. Sides included frozen corn and over fried potato wedges. In the end it was $100 for a so so meal. Don't think we will be going back.

Let me start with the good: Steaks were perfectly seasoned and cooked, did not need any steak sauce, salt or anything, just plain good. The not-so-good: It was Friday evening, after Thanksgiving (2012), they were about half-capacity and so not what I would think was overly busy. - Service was SLOW, INACCURATE, AND APATHETIC - Took our order 30 minutes after seating. - We ordered appetizers. Appetizers never came - never delivered at all. - Ordered a bottle of wine. Waited 30 minutes for that to arrive. (Had to ask for it multiple times) - Entrees arrived about 20 minutes after the wine. We asked about the appetizers, they were like "Meh. Didn't put them in, too bad." - Baked potatoes were woefully undercooked. My date's potato was literally cold in the middle. - Waiter acted like we should be eternally grateful because he didn't charge us for the appetizers he never delivered. Serious! I was dumbfounded. We arrived at 6:20pm. It was after 9pm when we walked out the door - still hungry. We ended up stopping somewhere else to get a snack/dessert. The worst was thing was watching other customers arrive after us, got drinks and appetizers before we had our wine, were done with their entrees and eating dessert/paying/leaving as we were getting our entrees. But the steaks are really good, that's why they get a second star. No, screw that, they don't get a second star. They need to shut down and let a better-run establishment take their pathetic place.

Waitress gave us the wrong check but insisted the amount on the check was our "correct" amount. She was then annoyed and put off because we wanted to see our right check just to make sure. She was a horrible waitress anyways...and please, don't argue with customers, especially when you know you are wrong and just trying to BS your way out of it. I told management about this, but they didn't really seem care. Oh, the shrimp dinner was pretty pathetic for the price....6 small peel and eat shrimp with your 2 sides. I would skip that one if you have any kind of appetite. Thanks for the lousy Mothers Day dinner.

Incredible experience! Great food. Great service. One of the best restaurant owners in the business who has a 30 year following. All of the steaks are 1st class! You get the cleanliness, service and food quality that makes you think youre at a state dinner at the white house or buckingham palace without the price. 1st class experience!

What a great place for the 5280 Scene. Just a short drive up the canyon towards Evergreen on Hwy 74. The atmosphere and food is outstanding. Starting with the Steak tidbits, into the Lettuce wedge, and the steak'' are excellent. Hats off to the Black Hat!!!

We husband and I are regulars that the "Black Hat" and find it so cozy. The food is absolutely wonderful, fresh and just all around tasty. We love the Texas shaped pavers out front and the outdoor patio is quaint as well. When the owner is in town, he always stops by the table and says his hello's. We appreciate good food and this place is tops.

Recommendations: 1). order your steak cooked one temp up from what you generally like. 2). sit at the comfy bar where there is great service. 3). Enjoy. 5th star added after another perfect visit. Original review below: ----- I'm going with 4 stars for now - one more visit might get it the 5th. We've been here a couple of times and have had really nice experiences. First time we sat at the bar and that was great. Really good service and an outstanding porterhouse steak. One thing i have learned is that the chef here really cooks things on the rare side. I have ordered steaks here twice now (both times porterhouse because it is outstanding) and both times a medium rare order came out quite rare - which I can live with so I ate it as is. Lesson learned though, next time I'll order it medium. Hopefully he'll be consistent and I'll get a medium rare steak. ;-) The other time we came in was with my parents. My Dad is hard of hearing so I called ahead and reserved the little private room they have in the front. It was *perfect*. My dad could hear us and so he was part of the conversation, which really cannot happen in most places because they are so loud. I loved the little room and so did my parents - we will be returning for that reason alone. But the food, and service are also extremely good here. Just going to order the steak Medium next time and let's see if they can get that fifth star.......

Way overprized!! Ambiance, service and food are all barely mediocre. Fried artichoke appetizer was clearly straight out of the freezer and completely flavorless, something you would have gotten at a fast food restaurant. Check total $170 for two adults and an 8 year old child. We will absolutely never go back nor recommend it to anybody!! We cant believe that they are actually getting some good reviews. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Very, very good. Last time i went I had the fried chicken (awesome) and my girlfriend had a steak. We were both extremely happy with the results. For the quality of food served, the price is a bargain!

Really 4.5 stars. Food, service, location are outstanding. 4 of us for dinner. Started by splitting a couple of cesar salads. A little heavy on the dressing but flavor was great and we ate every single bite. They baked fresh rolls, that were hot and yummy, but a little plain. Steaks were great. Two of us had the bone in ribeye, the cowboy drumstick. At $40 it's not cheap, but wow, is it good. Cooked perfectly, tender and juicy. Came with a baked potato, hot and yummy, and veggies, cooked well. We also had the elk medallions. Really interesting, tasty, and again, cooked perfectly. Finally had the small filet. Crispy on the outside, cooked perfect on the inside. This is what you expect from a good steakhouse. Service was very good and attentive. Prices, while not cheap, were very reasonable for what you get. I highly recommend this place

I cant give it any stars. My party never was able to get a seat after waiting for over an hour. From the moment we walked in the door we were greeted quite smugly as we did not have reservations. Three rimes the hostmonster said she would see what she could do, then promptly disappeared. Twice we were told it wouldn't be much longer and then we were ignored. If i had been told that there was really no chance of getting a seat i would have gladly left and desired to return . But to wait over an hour and to be treated so rudely i know i do not want to ever return. Don't treat your customers that way. The hostess needs to take a class or better yet go to a real steakhouse like the keg or capital grill and see how customers should be treated. Very poor poor service.

We went for the 5280 deal, and enjoyed ourselves. The waitstaff was excellent- very friendly, polite, prompt, and thorough. My water glass was always full, which is something I greatly appreciate, and I never felt bothered by the presence of whoever was topping it off, which is rare for me. The food was above-average for a steakhouse, and well priced (I took a peek at the menu to get an idea of their regular pricing). Portions were generous, to say the least! My house salad was fresh, but over-dressed. The prime rib was a nice cut of meat, a little on the dry side but still melt-in-your-mouth tender. My husband's steak was well-seasoned to my tastes, although he felt it lacked salt (which was easily remedied with the salt shaker on the table). The veggies were on the less-cooked side, which I love but I know some people hate. I'm not a big apple pie fan, but it sounded good that night and I was not disappointed! It's actually the only course where I cleaned my plate. Oh, and I had a great steak sandwich for lunch the next day with our leftovers. All in all, great deal for a good meal in a fun spot!

This place is one of my favorite hidden gems in the area. Don't let the drive to Kittredge scare you. It will take about 25 minutes from C470 and Morrison Road. The food is consistently very good and a great value. The steaks are high quality and well prepared - better than what I've had at places charging a lot more. The dining room is quiet which makes it ideal for a celebratory dinner with my elderly parents since my father frequently forgets his hearing aids. The service is always very good and sometimes excellent (our waiter the last time we were there was outstanding!). Their Restaurant Week dinner should not be missed. Unlike some places, they don't scale down the portions or the quality for the promotion. Oh, and the bread pudding is not to be missed.

Service was extremely poor. The waitress seemed uninterested in servicing our table, came to our table singing loudly to a song while ignoring us. The steaks looked gray. I had to send my steak back the first time for being over cooked, then the second time for being under cooked. Very disappointing. The decor itself is pretty interesting. Wouldn't go back!

Hubs and I stopped here on our way from Evergreen to Morrison in search of a good place for dinner. We'd met some friends at a bar in Evergreen, but didn't want bar food, so on we went. I'd read about BHCC somewhere and that it was good, so we stopped. Oh my! It was soooo good! They are extending their 5280 menu through the end of March, so I had that. I had the wedge salad, prime rib (buttery) and a creme brulee. The creme brulee was one of the best I've ever had. Hubs had the 1/2 rack of ribs, which consisted of some of the meatiest pork ribs we've ever seen. He could only eat 1/2 of the 1/2 rack. The rolls were delicious, hot and soft as well. We'll gladly drive up from Denver to go here again. OH....and the tab for all this plus a glass of wine for me was $56, plus tip.

Awesome Steaks. Perfectly seasoned. Perfectly Cooked. My wife and I enjoyed a late evening dinner at Black Hat Cattle Company. And yes the owner does wear a Black Hat. I have the 14oz Ribeye Chop Special and it was awesome. My wife had the filet and I made her let me try some and it was awesome. The baked potato was good. The vegetables were so-so, and I would have liked to trade it for a salad but I wasn't that hungry anyway.

Wow .... I'd travel out of my way to come here. We'd spend all day hauling horses from Boulder to Evergreen and were told this was the place to get our eat on...even in our jeans and tees. PROS:: Great ambiance, service exceed our expectations, even better food, great artwork, great ornaments, and VERY CLEAN! CONS: nadas (nothing) ... well .. I wish there was more patio seating because we were jealous of all the other people sitting outside but hey ... we will make reservations next time! :) Obviously, we'll clean up a bit more for our next visit but we were so welcomed by good people and food; that we've earmarked this place for a return visit with family and friends. Thanks again Black Hat Cattle Co!

Overpriced (way). Average service, overcooked elk was disappointing, my filet was good but unseasoned. The side of fresh veggies were good, but rice pilaf appeared to be white rice with canned vegetables and onion rings seemed ore-Ida ( and I believe with an extra fee). Paid a bunch for a marginal meal and average service.unlikely we will return.

Great place to go. We went in on a Friday night and had a wonderful time. The Wait staff was very knowledgeable and the food was good. The only complaint I could have is we did order Calamari as an appetizer and for $10.00 I was expecting a much larger portion size. My 8 year old ate it all in five minutes and still finished all his dinner. If the price was adjusted to fit the portion size or vise verse it would be a perfect 5 stars.

Never disappointed. We seem to gravitate to this place for Happy Hour, last night we started out with "street tacos" only 5.00, then " spinach articoke dip", only 5.00, of course drinks are also happy hour prices. Then we shared off the regular menu "Steak Tidbit's with garlic toast in bernaise sauce around 9 or 10 bucks, still Excellent prices for GREAT food.

Some of you old schoolers will remember The Tivoli Deer... shattered me when they closed....but wait...the food gods are smiling again on the little resturant in Kittridge...They guy that ran the 19th hole resturant at the Evergreen golf course has all but wiped out the memory of the ol Tivoli Deer with one of the best steak houses in Colorado....Great food and drink...First class interior changes...a knowledgeable staff...(that goes a long way with me)...and a proud owner that stops by your table to thank you for comming and checks on how they are doing...who does that any more I ask you...THEY DO... Right on HWY74 (bear Creek Rd.) on the way to Little Bear...and your there...If you eat after 5pm...call fist to secure a spot for one of the most enjoyable meals you have had since they plucked that bottle out of your mouth and put you on solid food...OMG..this place ROX Aloha for now.Breeze

Absolutely awesome! I had the prime rib with onion rings, mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus (and key lime cheesecake for dessert) and everything was undeniably the best I have ever had... and I'm a prime rib fanatic. Delicious food, exceptional service, love the location. Just down right great in every way. I will definitely be back... many, many times.

Great steaks, perfectly done! At reasonable prices! Plus its kinda dark and done up in all these old western furnishings. Add to that the old classic country soundtrack with like Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers, and a really nice service staff and owner..... And this place is everything I could want in a steakhouse!

Great food. We were looking for someplace new with GREAT steaks. We had the New York Strip and Filet Mignons. They were excellent. This is a Western-feel gem opportunity to duck out of town into a rural mountain setting just minutes from Denver. It is nice but relaxed. The staff was helpful and glad to see us. If you are looking for fantastic steaks in a unique setting that makes you feel like you got out of town, this is it. Also, check their website for "coupons" they offer - saved us 10% (how many great steak houses do that?). We will definitely be back.

Poor service poor service! I am a Evergreen local and gave the black hat three chances and no more. And for the guy that hands out tooth picks... How about walking around and asking your customers if the service is ok and most importantly the food. And I feel it is right on par with the Sizzler. Lastly don't waste your time and money.

Had a surprisingly great filet oscar, and my wife loved the elk medallions. The service was great and the food very good. Neat setting, it was like 15 minutes past Morrison, an easy, scenic drive. I'm looking forward to visiting and sitting outside in the summer. Thanks!
