If you are driving near or in the front range - head UP highway 72 and enjoy a wonderful restaurant This is only 15 minutes if you have a fast motorcycle or sports car from 119 ( go west and UP) or peak to peak highway ( east and UP). Perhaps the most genuine and wonderful Mexican food - complimented by traditional American fare. You can enjoy a great breakfast, superb lunch or dinner. You will be welcomed with exceptional service from the girls and yes a magnificent view of the front range. You can enjoy a pleasant outside patio if it is sunny and warm . If you want a wonderful destination for your drive into the mountains make the Wondervu Cafe your choice ! You know you are there when you reach the top of the hill

Came here for father's day brunch buffet - soooooooo yummy. Any time I can eat enchiladas at 930 in the morning with no shame count me in. Service was very sweet, and sitting outside on a Sunday morning was great. I was not disappointed in any of the food, all was extremely delicious! Strawberry rhubarb crumble, the tamales, the green chile (YUM) - will definitely be back here again. The only bummer is sitting outside can get loud, since motorcycles are commonplace. Also getting there means my road rage is at a maximum since bicyclists don't know how to ride on the shoulder....jus' sayin.

Stopped today. Margaritas were good, $10 for chips and queso, that's a little much. They had some chocolates on a display too. Good... But $16 for 4pcs? Really? View is nice, from the outside of the restaurant. Not sure if I will be back... There's really nothing fancy or cool this place. Gift shop next door has some cool stuff (from Colorado artists), service was good, just slow.

There's nothing like taking the beautiful drive up Highway 72 in the heat of summer to step out in the cool mountain air of minuscule Wondervu, Colorado. Wondervu basically consists of a gift shop, a bus stop, and the Wondervu Cafe - which serves the best Mexican food in the front range. No contest!. Everything is made FRESH in house. And you can really tell! The chips are hot and crispy, and the salsa is tangy and juicy. Family favorites are the #9 (guac tostada plate: mounds of chunky, fresh guac, covered in heaps of cheese and tomatoes), beef and bean burrito a la carte (BIGGEST burrito you'll ever come across), the fresh and zesty chile rellenos, and once in awhile, we'll treat ourselves to the delicious, enormous chimichanga. If you manage to save room, it'll be hard, definitely order yourself the Mexican creampuff. But only one. Like most everything on the menu this puppy is HUGE! It will easily serve 4. But what is it?! One giant sopapilla stuffed with what must be a pint of vanilla ice cream, covered in whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and honey. This is one serious dessert. Last but not least, the margs are killer good. Order them by the liter, relax on the porch and see if you can't spot a bear in the woods (really).

What should you come to Wondervu for? - Green Chili & Margaritas. They make a pretty mean bowl of green chili, perfect for after a winter snow shoe, and their margarita menu is vast and refreshing. This isn't the place for amazing mexican food and as others have mentioned, some items are overly pricey, but if you are going to stop in those two items get my approval!

We were driving up to Nederland from Denver and thought this place looked nice. They have tons of outdoor seating and it was a lovely day. We arrived here around 11am on a Sunday and asked for the lunch menu.... Only had breakfast". We should have checked yelp. Colorado Mexican is not exactly our style of Mexican but we figured we would give it a go. First off there is no kids menu.... And they don't have breakfast tacos, only burritos. So my 6 year old ordered and received a huge egg and chorizo burrito. She is super sensitive to spice but thankfully for her it was absolutely the most bland chorizo I have ever tasted making it ok for her. My husband had an omelet and I had a smothered breakfast burrito. We waited 45 minutes for this (the restaurant was not crowded) and both had absolutely no flavor. The smothered burrito came with the green chili sauce but it didn't have any distinctive chili or tomatillo flavors.... Just strange. I guess if you were coming for the nice outdoor seating and frosty adult beverages, it might be enjoyable but not the food. Even my 6 year old said the food was nothing like we have back home.

If you love spending $24 for a plate of the worst Mexican food that Colorado has to offer, look no farther. I had the Pollo Asada, which was a huge, unseasoned chicken breast with a side of tasteless refried beans and some hard Spanish rice that looked like couscous. The slab of dry chicken was plated with pico de gallo, lettuce and guacamole and appeared to be an assemble-yourself meal but came with only one flour tortilla to do it with. Don't worry, you can buy more tortillas at $1.00 each. My partner had trout which was uninspired, bland and cooked incorrectly. It appeared to be steamed, and was paired with a baked potato and Texas toast. After buying two pieces of fudge, our total came to a whopping $63. Glad we didn't spring for an alcoholic beverage! The waitress was rude and seemed annoyed with us. The man in the booth behind us summed up the experience pretty well, by saying that "ehhh it's food", when asked how it was. The only think positive about all of this was the size of the portions, but they weren't "$24 a plate" worthy.

The food portions were generous for breakfast but the entire menu is unbelievably priced. $5 for a side of hash browns? $7 if you want to add cheese? Come on!! The food was definitely not worth the price. Very obvious that this joint just preys on tourists. I definitely should have checked yelp beforehand. Will definitely not be returning and will advise my friends to do the same.

We're locals. We know what we're in for at the Wondervu: overpriced food and slow service, but it's a short drive. They really outdid themselves tonight. 40 minute wait for an underdone sandwich and a salad. Overworked waitress was apologetic; the 2nd cook didn't show. Frankly, it didn't look like they needed one for 6 tables. To Go orders went out as we watched. Next time: continue on to the Stage Stop, or the Last Shot.

While the wait staff was both incredibly friendly and professional the cost and taste of the food at Wondervu Cafe is what killed our eating experience. It cost $35 for two people to eat with both of us drinking water because refills aren't free. A standard steak dinner is nearly $27 so we opted for the cheaper plates at $15-$17 each. The food took quite some time to come out and once there it was overcooked and poorly seasoned. Simply put the food at Wondervu Cafe is in absolutely no way worth the money. If you're looking for delicious well priced food just head toward Nederland. Although our waitress was phenomenal, her personality and charm just couldn't out weigh the other major flaws at Wondervu. I would not recommend this resturant and will not be returning.

The service was horrible and the food was subpar for what was paid. I would never return there. The green chili tasted very bland and like it was out of a jar. The wait staff was unfriendly and we had to wait for our food for 1.5 hours, we never got an update or an apology. We finally got our food when we said we were going to leave. I do not recommend this place at all.

I woke up this morning missing Wondervu Cafe real bad. I always had a delicious breakfast sandwich as I sat & chatted with Gary. I guess today is that kind of weather, a lil chill to the air while the sun is shining bright. It's a locals joint, the hub of the canyon. I miss living across the street and frequenting there. Sometimes it gets crazy, I see a lot of reviews on here about bad service but you have to understand that Adeline can't do it all everyday but she sure does try. If only all she had to do was cook... that would be amazing! Miss you Wondervu!

  • Jake J.

Horrible overpriced food! $21 for a tiny bit of dried fajitas with stale tortillas that took almost 45 minutes to arrive at our table. We got 3 tortillas and we simply asked for more and got charged $6 for 4 more tortillas! The servers run around like stressed chickens even though they arent busy... worst experiance we had in Colorado. My advice? KEEP DRIVING! Yuck!

This time of the year, unless it 's one of those brilliant sun splashed, blue skied January days, I wouldn't recommend taking the gorgeous drive up coal creek to sit on the patio and enjoy the charming oversized deck. Sitting outside bundled up like Randy from "A Christmas Story," and wearing mittens, is just plain miserable. Besides, unless you're a tourist, that look is reserved for ski lodges and snowmobile trails. But, I'm planting a seed to all your convertible connoisseur's and motorcycle enthusiasts, nothing beats the ride, the sun soaked deck and the friendly staff here at the Wondervu Cafe. They specialize in Mexican food, but the breakfast is worth the early morning jaunt. And personally, I love the buffalo burger and their green chile. Honestly, this place is all about the ride, whether you're coming from Denver or flowing down from the peak to peak highway, enjoyinging the twisty turns and breathtaking views. I recommend, if you come up one way, go out the other way...the ride becomes completely different. It's just so nice to find this gem, take off the gear, enjoy a great meal, wonderful people watching and a cold beverage on those lazy days you're looking for something different to do.

I ate lunch at this mountain cafe style Mexican joint. I found the atmosphere to be somewhat eclectic and enjoyable. I ordered a tostada, enchilada, burrito combo and it was actually very delicious. The green pork chili which smothered the burrito had the perfect amount of spice and the cheese enchilada was very cheesy and crispy! Went on a Tuesday for lunch and it took my meal 30 minutes from order to table, which seemed to be somewhat of a wait, but the waitress was very kind and the food was worth the wait :)

We love Wondervu! We came upon Wondervu after doing some 4wheeling in the area about 3 years ago and now we make it a yearly thing! They have the best guacamole! It is so fresh they make it on site same as the salsa which is delicious as well. We have always had good service and the patio is awesome after a drive in the mountains. Don't forget the margs!

My husband and had been hiking at Eldorado state park. We took a drive after we were done and decided to stop at the Wondervu Cafe. They have an excellent selection of margaritas with several flavors like prickly pear, pomegranate and mango by the glass or pitcher which were great after being in the heat all afternoon. They have ala carte or full entree Mexican selections. All of our food was good and we really enjoyed the guacamole. The staff were very nice and they have a gift shop right next door with a nice selection of souvenirs. We will definitely go back.

Sensational Mexican fare in an even better setting overlooking continental divide. The breakfasts are fabulous and even the coffee was high quality. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito with chili. Warm atmosphere and friendly staff. This is a must stop for anyone heading up to Eldora, Rollinsville, Black Hawk, or Nederland.

We ate here after hiking the Forsythe Canyon trail to Gross Reservoir (highly recommended!). We loved it. We sat outside on a breezy June day. The food was surprisingly good (we ordered some of their Mexican entrees). Its definitely got that unique hole-in-the-wall thing going on. The building itself has a European ski chalet feel. It's older and quirky. It wasn't super cheap but not too expensive (entrees were mostly under $15). The service wasn't fast but I was in no hurry. I loved it.

We live in the canyon and eat here every once in a while. We usually get the smothered beef or bean burritto with cheese inside. The food is good and plenty of it. They have great margaritas and a good variety of beer. The prices are a little high and the service is definitely on mountain time. The mountain location with great scenery makes any drawbacks worth it.

Yummy, spicy chorizo! Lots of outdoor seating. Friendly waitstaff. I also had an iced latte, which was delicious. I read several complaints in previous reviews regarding service being slow and unfriendly. I didn't experience anything like that. We also went at 9am and there were only a handful of tables that were occupied.

if you like slow service, poor customer service, high prices and mediocre food this is your place. We sat down about 1:30ish on a Sunday afternoon. It didn't seem too busy. We ordered and I think it took at least a 35 to 40 min to get our food. They kept apologizing that it was taking so ling and explained the had a 10 top table. O.k. I might understand the slowness if the restaurant was busy but that wasn't the case and then at least offer the couple of tables that are waiting some chips and salsa for free. I guess they rely on the tourist and not the locals to keep them in business because I certainly would not be bothered going back.

Insanely high prices? Check. Terrible food? Check. Sub-par service? Check. This place banks on tourists eating there, they don't care if you ever come back because they can count on new people stopping by because it's basically the only place to eat on Coal Creek Canyon. We live a few miles down the road and used to eat here often, but after our last experience, we will never be back. After waiting 30 minutes for $3 chips and salsa, our unhappy waitress finally took our order. For some reason, when you order a burrito, they ask if you want it "fried or not fried". My wife gets the same burrito every single time, and always has to say "not fried". Pretty much every other time they get it wrong and fry it. I'd also like to add that said burrito costs $14. This time was no exception, and to top it off, it took us an hour to get the food. The waitress brings the fried burrito over, presents it in her face, and says "sorry, we fried it." My wife is too nice to send food back, as well as too hungry to care at that point, so she took it. I am however not as nice, so I have no problem saying this place is probably the worst mexican food I have ever had. If you order anything with ground beef, expect it to be dry, overcooked, and taste awful. On the plus side, I once saw Buzz Aldrin eating there. I bet he hated it too.

The Eggs Benedict are some of the best I have ever had! The hollandaise sauce is phenomenal. We were there on a Friday morning, but I asked if we could get it (it is usually served only on weekends) and they were happy to do it. That alone made the drive worthwhile..... The service is spotty, yes, even though we were the only ones there. The green chile was just so-so, but I do live spicy and it was less than I what I prefer. The rest of the breakfast was pretty good as well. I have been here for dinner as well and I did enjoy the mexican food. Not the best I have had, but I thought it was pretty good, and you cannot beat the drive up! All in all, it is a great little spot to eat. I doubt I would drive there just to eat, but it is a great stop on a drive or on the way to Central City/Blackhawk.

slow service that is so poor you won't even wait to try the food! We've stopped here several times over the years. Every time the food has become worse and the service has gotten slower. We had a party of 6 last weekend, and arrived earlier to avoid a lunch crowd. We were the only ones there, other than the staff. At 11:20 am we were told "the grill isn't turned on until 12" and were given breakfast menus. We looked at the menu and waited 15 minutes for 1 coke, 1 water, and a few iced teas. By 11:45 they finally took our food order....which had to be breakfast due to their rules. By 12:30 we told them we were not prepared to wait any longer and around 12:40 we paid for our drinks and went to find lunch somewhere else. Stupidly poor service! We only ordered breakfast burritos (that are priced at over $10/plate) and an order of pancakes. How could that take anyone more than an hour to prepare??? We won't be back.

Service is slow and not very friendly. The prices seemed high for a restaurant of this caliber. However, the fajitas are big enough to share.

  • Mark C.

I have eaten there several times when out riding the canyon. Prices are a little high for the slightly lacking food quality, though portion sizes are generous. They do a reasonable job with the burgers, but are below par on the Mexican food. Stop here if you really have to, but better off riding up or down the hill to find GOOD food. Very nice (but small) deck, good (but not great) service.

    (2)
  • Nell C.

We arrived at 11am and were told we could only order off the breakfast menu. After a bit of banter they finally agreed to let us order off the lunch menu as long as nothing had to be grilled. (No burgers, etc) wtf? We also had very slow unrepentant service. Meh.

  • Bob S.

After hiking on the Continental Divide this weekend, we popped into Wondervu for green chili and margs-tasty as usual, but noticed the place is up for sale after nearly 40 years in business. Service has slowed to a near crawl, and the place was not crowded at 5PM on a sunny day for the fun deck. We also observed the new menu prices-high or higher than many good Denver mexican places to dine, the locals probably cannot afford this historical place anymore.

    (3)
  • Robert T.

The food is really bland, and the price is just insane. It's $10 for chips and guacamole. That should give you an idea of what I'm talking about. The service is really bad. We had to flag someone down to be seated even though the place wasn't busy at all. The bathroom was small and nasty. Do yourself a favor and skip this place.

Great food, service is a little slow, but the prices are what's going to keep us away. Too bad they raised prices so high, great place to go hang out...

  • Jezebel L.

Oh my gosh, this place was so bad, it was comical. I don't even know where to start... Our chips and salsa-which they charge $3 for- made it to our table about one minute before our food (we actually asked for them 3 times). Mmm, they were just what was needed to cut through the unadulterated glass of cheap sour mix, which they call a margarita. We all ordered shredded beef burritos in various ways- Chili inside, chili out side, cheese, no cheese, etc.- they all came out wrong and the same. The meat inside was almost powdered it was soooooo dry and overly salted. It was like potted meat or that beef jerky you get in those little tins, which look like chew It is tremendously over priced, and most of the tables do not have a view of the Mtn. pass, which IS the WunderVU. This goes well beyond the whitest Mexican food I have ever had. Margarita=0 points, Burrito=0 points, Charging that much for chips and salsa=0 points, waitress forgetting everything=0 points, kitchen botching all 3 people's orders=0 points.... I think you see where I am going with this........ on the up side, the whole thing was SOOO bad, that we all had a good gut laugh at their behalf, so that was good!

  • Greg W.

Good food with bad service. There are few places to eat in Wondervu and even fewer customers to attract. You would expect service at this out of the way cafe to be at least average. If you don't mind waiting a long time for your food, rude wait staff that ignore you. This is the place for you. They do accept credit cards, but discourage it. If you have a large party, they will serve the smaller local parties before they get to you.

I've eaten here my entire life!!! This is one of the best Mexican food restaurants in Colorado!!! It's not just the food that is amazing, but the view which will blow your mind away!!! When you visit make sure you eat some of their incredible chili-con-queso and after dinner dig into there to-die-for hot fudge sundaes!!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
