Great coffee, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and atmosphere! We incidentally went on Mother's Day close to 11:00 am (prime Brunch Time) without realizing it and we still found a comfortable spot to sit and our croissant sandwiches came out fast. Very nice atmosphere, a nice play area for those with kids, although the walkway in that area can tend to get congested as that's also the way to get to the bathrooms and back of the kitchen. Didn't pose much of a problem as all the patrons here have been polite. The friendly, local sort that would visit the neighborhood cafe. Attentive, fast and friendly staff, clean, and a warm, inviting country atmosphere that isn't "too country". We will be regulars here! The only recommendation for improving I would make is to have just some cheap flatware instead of plastic ware only - help the environment out ;)

This place is ok. I enjoy when they have live music. The employees are sometimes not on their game. I've had the hottest beverage of my life here, burning my tongue unable to taste for days. And just the other day I asked if they had any croissants (I didn't see any), was told yes and given my pastry bag to go. Opened it up to find a scone. Scones are not croissants. I'm not sure the guy knew. Not too many complaints, because that scone was delicious (carrots, coconut, and cranberries? I didn't believe it until I tasted it). So their service is hit or miss, but its always tastey.

Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy little establishment located in Historic Downtown Golden. I liked the colorful chalkboard menu and lived in book shelves. We came here around 11AM for a shot of caffeine to put a little pep into our step. ICED CHAI CHARGER ($4): Comes with two shots of espresso. The Chai was mild and thirst quenching. 3/5 GOLD DIGGER FRAP ($4.35): Comes with espresso, chocolate, caramel, and milk. The brother-in-law got this. No complaints. 3/5 ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH FRAP ($4.35): Comes with espresso, chocolate, mint, and milk. I couldn't taste the mint flavor and thought the gold digger and rocky mountain tasted quite similar. Husband thought it was okay. 3/5 SERVICE: Kind of weird. The cashier was all frowns, no smiles. She didn't give us a receipt, but she offered a receipt to my brother-in-law. The employees making the drinks seemed to be a little frazzled. 2/5 Worth a Return Visit? Hate to say it but I prefer Starbucks drinks to Windy Saddle Cafe. YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2015: #215

Staff is friendly, food is good, but DO NOT go here to get work done. I've been three times, spent $15-30 each time on food, expecting to work remotely for a few hours and had the wifi go down or never be able to log in. I understand that not all places are meant for people to bring their laptops, which is why I gave Windy Saddle 3/5 stars. The atmosphere is "busy", but it's mostly kids running around (they have a kids playroom) and college students trying to connect (unsuccessfully) to the Internet. As I mentioned before they have good drip coffee, excellent panini sandwiches and an averagely friendly. They also carry Upslope Brewing Co. Cans - which is a plus! However, to my disappointment, I won't be back for a while, at least not if I plan on getting any work done.

Favorite brunch and coffee spot in golden and Denver! The chai tea, coffees and breakfast burrito are my favorite. The service is always wonderful too!

Absolutely love this cafe. Great location, right at the welcome to Golden sign. Great service. So cute and cozy inside. The coffee and soups are delish! Love to come here after the Golden Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

Got into town around 9 looking for a local place to eat. Bingo!! This is a very nice place. I got the meat breakfast burrito. $5.18 after tax and definitely worth the price. It was filled with eggs, ham, potatoes, green chili, and onions and a cup of salsa on the side. It was delicious! I don't drink coffee, but it is apparently what most people come here for. A steady flow of people in and out with coffee cups. They have outside seating which I chose even though it was only 50 degrees because there was no wind and it was sunny. Beautiful view of downtown Golden and the surrounding hills. First time here, but I will be back.

The food is good, as is the coffee, all at a good price. Friendly staff. Bonus points for Alterra Coffee (from Wisco). My lone beef with this place is the less-than-reliable wifi, although that's likely by design (only shuts down when full(ish)- which is often). If you're someone who needs to get work done, there are better options nearby. If wi-fi isn't a need, consider the Windy Saddle a 5-star review.

Cute coffee shop. Plenty of seating. Service was a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry, so didn't matter much for us. Lots of light inside so it would be good for reading.

Stopped in here because someone mentioned the breakfast burritos were good. I got the green chili on top of the burrito that has meat included. The green chili grew on me. It started out not very spicy but had a little kick to it. This is more of a coffee shop but the staff was very friendly.

Breakfast burrito meat. Green chile sauce. Seasoned sausage is legit. Regular ol joe medium roast is perfection.

We stumbled upon this place during Buffalo Bill Days last weekend. I am a gluten free vegetarian - not an easy combination. This place was able to feed me and feed me well. They have a really tasty roasted vegetable sandwich and really good gluten free bread from 5 Star Baking company (located around the corner). I am still thinking about that sandwich. In addition, they had several gluten free pastry options. I bought a scone and brought it home for breakfast the next day. It didn't make it to breakfast though as I happily ate it at 10 pm that night!

Went there yesterday, Sunday June28, we had never been, and the experience wasn't what we were expecting. We found the menu lacking pancakes. Three girls behind counter didn't care to say any greeting, have you been here before, nothing. Unfortunately we walked out. Thanks anyway.

This is a great, very unpretentious breakfast/lunch place right in downtown Golden. It is open for dinner hours although the menu is largely a soup, salad, sandwich style menu that is typically more associated with lunch. The decor is pure Golden and provides a very comfortable dining experience. Service was good and the sandwiches were excellent. This is a great place to catch a late lunch (helps avoid the crowds).

Coffee and iced coffee were throw it away gross. Espresso also wasn't that good. Some of the worst coffee I've ever had.

I had the Gold Digger with Almond milk instead of cow. Sooooooooo good! And not sickening sweet like many other drinks by other coffee joints!

  • Robert S.

Waited an hour for two breakfast burritos when they finally came out, one was burnt and the other loosely thrown on the plate. Supposedly wait was due to only one person in the kitchen on a busy summer Sunday morning.

This place must be owned by Wisconsin Badger fans! They have the Bucky logo on the door and a picture of the Union framed. Great find for out of town Badger fan! The breakfast croissant, burritos and yogurt parfait are great!

  • Andy L.

Great atmosphere, friendly service and awesome baked goods. The breakfast burrito smothered in pork green chili is also kick-ass, perfect after a morning trail run. Coffee is decent, could be better, but in every other aspect this place is the best morning hangout in Golden.

If you're looking for a lunch spot in Golden, look no further. Windy Saddle is an adorable hole-in-the-wall cafe that SCREAMS "Golden." The decor is artistic with a dash of blast-from-the-past with its worn brick wall and rustic furniture. Foodwise, they offer a wide array of salads and sandwiches and a number of pastries (including savory!) I ate the "Rodeo Ruben Panini" for lunch one day and very much enjoyed it. The service is always friend and they have decent WiFi, so it's a great place to do work. (Although, if it gets busy during lunch time, they will shut it off as to accommodate other patrons.) In addition to coffee, they also serve local beer (~$4) and wine (~$8). Remember, this is a REAL coffee shop, not a Starbucks. Order wisely. PRO TIP: CSM grad students get 25% off their bill and happy hour microbrew and wine prices on Wednesdays.

Cold food and the baristas sadly showed little concern. Here goes, they served me a cold breakfast burrito (5/23/15). An easy fix. Then had me wait in line holding my plate until inline customers insisted they help me first. Clueless on customer needs. So I had to watch my friends dine while reheating. Great location, tough on a tourist.

Dear Windy Saddle, Our relationship is only a week old, yet we have had our ups and downs already. You have provided me with yummy spiced chai tea and gold digger blended coffee, yet you have also provided me with WTF-this-is-not-good combinations like strawberry, coconut, and avocado whole wheat muffins. Your service, although very friendly, is slow and scattered. I'm not sure how long we will last, but, let's give this a go and see where it takes us. Maybe I need to try your more substantial food items before I take this to the next level. Love, Your new fling.

  • Ronald S.

decent cup of coffee. and they serve wine .. bonus points there. it just felt like everyone in here had never been in a coffee shop before, or had to stand on line and wait for coffee or order from someone behind the counter. everyone was confused, and it wasnt early in the morning. some of the food looked decent.

  • Greg C.

We are bikers AND wear leathers and skulls and all that good stuff. I stood at the counter for at least five minutes asking to get served and the girl kept looking at me and turned her back each time. A guy came out from the back kitchen and I tried to wave him down twice....he looked at me and went back. This happened here about 2 years ago but we thought they were just busy....I think they dont want bikers in there (the Buffalo Rose, a biker bar, is just across the street). To me, I was discriminated against.

  • Drew G.

Bad music , played too loudly for a cafe where you want to have a conversation or read. It's obviously for the benefit of the staff, not the customers. It's also stuffy, like there is no ventilation in the place. Otherwise, the food is good, not great. And it's got a good look to it.

Love this place! Everyone who works here is incredibly friendly, humorous, makes every moment of every day better because they just make you smile! The prices here are reasonable for what they serve, you can tell they serve everything with pride. They have great happy hour from 2-5pm and also have make-your-own Bloody Mary. I got a Mangosa (a Mimosa but with additional mango juice with the OJ) which was pretty tasty. I love the atmosphere in this place - it's cozy, they serve good food, they play Planet Earth on their flat screen, they have comfy seating, it's a fantastic place. They do have short hours, so they close earlier than a lot of places nearby. But this place is a great place to hang out with friends or with your family, it's got that great vibe that applies to both groups. I will DEFINITELY be back!

Been here twice now, the breakfast burritos are awesome! Having been to school at University of Wisconsin Madison, I was pleasantly surprised when I first walked in and saw all the Madison, Wisconsin stuff! Definitely nostalgic!

I Love this place!!! It's so good and I love the way it feels apart of the community. Although I don't need to eat gluten free my sis does and it's always so hard to find places for her. I appreciate the fact that I don't have to worry about that here. Thanks Windy Saddle for making my life easier. :)

Best coffee in all of Golden. Great place to converse and enjoy your coffee. Strong, bold, and tasty.

First trip ever to Golden and we had some time to kill prior to going on the Coors brewery tour. The Windy Saddle had good sandwiches, salads, and coffee that I would recommend and were a good value. Our group of eight had a relaxing and casual lunch and we were able to sit together around a large circular table. I had the Tuna sandwich and it was very good. They were out of soup for the day when we went. I would return to check out some more of their menu.

The Desk clerk at the The Golden Hotel gave me this great recommendation. And Boy He was right. Its only a short walk from the hotel as well. I went in right before closing. And the Barista she was more than friendly. I ordered a Chai Tea. And had the option of sweet or spicy. WAAAAA? No one ever offered me a choice. I went with Spicy. And I ordered a Orange Blueberry bar. Love the interior, everything is wooden and rustic. Keeping up with Goldens history. And they also have bands playing but for that night they canceled. Shes such a friendly and adorable girl filled with information. And knows how to make a Delicious Chai Tea. They also have breakfast burritos which next time im in Golden I know where Ill stop in for a quick bite. She didnt mind people hanging out even after they were closed while she cleaned up. Customer Service like that goes along way. Starbucks who?

I have been here exactly twice. Once was a few years ago, when in a truly desperate attempt to get work done during my master's. I got some sort of coffee and some sort of food and used the wifi and remembered absolutely nothing about it. So, I didn't review. Then, today, i had to teach nearby and was approaching being hardcore hangry. I went in, realized they don't sell odwalla or any bottled smoothie (though they do make them for $5). I grabbed a Bing (I'm glad they have Bing, at least!), and tried to find a small food item. My options were the truly gargantuan mediocre-looking baked goods, a bag of chips, a giant biscotti, or a bag of unlabeled fruit snacks. I stood in line for a few minutes, and then the barista said, I think, that she needed a minute to make drinks. There was someone in the back room, but no one else came to take orders, so 4 people stood in line staring and waiting. By the way, I'd just like to note that this barista had a cult-like look of peace-mixed-with-indoctrination on her face, and she was- to quote Seinfeld- a quiet talker. I have no idea what she said the whole time I was there. Which, was approximately 10 minutes. It took me 10 minutes to buy an energy drink and a bag of chips. The barista didn't know what was in items, didn't know how much items cost, had to go ask a mythical but absent-from-view coworker. I finally got to pay and handed her my card. She seemed like she was about to say they had a minimum, but I think she got my "I'm hangry, don't you dare stand between me and food" vibe and took my card anyway. So, it took 10 minutes to buy an overpriced drink and an overpriced bag of chips from a quiet talking barista in a meditative state, all while on a strict time frame. And to top it all off, their clock is 6 minutes fast so I thought I was late the whole time. Next time I'll just go to Safeway.

Add this to must visit coffee shop list. Situated in historic downtown Golden, CO, this place always seems to be filled with people. The staff is fun and friendly, the assortment of bakery items is plentiful. I even got an entire pumpkin pie for $5! No kidding! They have very comfortable seating for those that enjoy working on a laptop or reading a book while sipping some freshly brewed coffee. Enjoy!

Great spot. Good coffee. Good breakfast. Right on the main drag, so good location for all things Golden.

This is a very nice coffee shop. I was surprised at their breakfast offerings. Quite filling! The muffins in the bakery case were very delicious and the coffee was very satisfying. Of course if you're very hungry for a big breakfast you should go elsewhere.

I don't usually give places give stars but this place was worth it. I came in on a busy MLK day and though they were out of soup and chicken for the salad I was still impressed with their customer service, speed and Deliciousness of their establishment. The view of golden is great if you sit by the window. Had the Kicken chicken salad sub chicken for turkey and Gf dressing and the rueben w GF bread!. Smoothie to finish! All great...

My friend and I stumbled upon this little gem while in the area to do the Coors tour. We decided it would probably be a good idea to eat something before we hit up the beer. Anyhoo, we walked in, and I immediately loved the worn coffee shop vibe of the place. Mismatched tables and chairs, plenty of comfy armchairs and couches, tattered board games, and much-loved books on the walls. Flyers advertising community events like kids' book readings and live local music sessions were everywhere. All in all, my kind of coffee shop. Both my friend and I ordered the Thunderbird sandwich. I'm a sucker for a turkey sandwich with avocado and chipotle mayo. It was very good. I didn't get to try the coffee, but she had a smoothie and it was quite tasty. I would definitely stop back in here for a bite and a beverage!

Really cool shop--great location, fantastic space, decent atmosphere (refrigerators were really loud), but the espresso was *awful.* Perhaps I should have seen it coming considering the espresso machine they had, but their door says "serious coffee," so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. In the future, I *would* come back, but I wound not buy an espresso drink. Maybe chai or other tea. Maybe a refrigerated drink. But I definitely won't be buying a latte, etc.

  • Aditi A.

Windy Saddle can serve up a solid drip coffee and a mean 4-shot soy latte, but when I ordered the "smothered" breakfast burrito the next day I was underwhelmed bordering on disgusted. First of all, it's not a burrito, it's more of an understuffed wrap in a steamed flour tortilla. The fillings are meh - rubbery scrambled eggs, soggy veggies... But the worst was the "smother", a sticky, salty, trying-to-be-picante-but-failing-miserably sauce. Stick to the basics, Saddle!

Food is yummy. Coffee is fantastic. Location is ideal. Views are great. It's so relaxing. It's a great meet-up spot with a friend if you only have an hour or so to catch up.

Thunderbird Sanwich: This review is only for their sandwich. I didn't try their coffee or any of their other beverages. I tried the thunderbird, mostly because it had avocado and chipotle mayo. I wasn't impressed with this sandwich at all. It was a plain, run of the mill sandwich that I could have bought at safeway or something for half the price. The only thing that set it apart was the bread (baguette). There is no way this sandwich is worth $8 tho. The people taking my order weren't noticeably friendly or rude. However, they lost my order ticket so I was waiting for my sandwich for a good 15+ minutes. I get that this happens from time to time so I wasn't upset about it. They apologized and made me my sandwich right away. But, my friend ordered 2 sandwiches and that took a really long time as well... in other words, don't come here if you're pressed for time. The only reason I may go back is for their desserts. The desserts in their display case looked pretty good, especially their cream puffs. I will not be back to try their lunch items tho. I saw some of their salads and I wasn't impressed with them either.

Really delicious coffee and one of the coziest atmospheres I've seen at a coffee shop! Service was definitely not the friendliest I've experienced, but my latte was strong so I was a happy camper regardless!!

  • Unshod J.

Great coffee shop! Love the old tables and the brick walls. Seems like this building hasn't had too much work done to it in the last 50 years. The coffee is always good and they have a variety of baked goods that never disappoint. The staff tends to be a bit dry and not overly friendly but it also pretty busy every time I've been in. No other complaints to speak of at this point!

  • Grant H.

Good luck! No seriously, I don't know how this place has such high ratings. I'd say the coffee here is fine to try (not what I prefer, but it's decent), but I'll never get food here again! I've held off saying anything bad about this place for some time (I've been here from time to time since it opened), but I just had a lunch there that was a very disappointing experience. In the past I've had some issues with their breakfast burritos. They typically are good, until you get them to-go. They just haven't packaged them very well in the past to make the to-go eating experience anything but a huge pain in the a$$. But, like I said, I kept this too myself, convincing myself that I just don't go there enough to say anything bad. Today, though, just had the Italian Stallion sandwich. First, the girl working the register was such an airhead the interaction between her and my friend was just awkward. We were just trying to be friendly and personable, but she couldn't figure this out. We ended up just shutting up and letting her finish the transaction. Then when I ordered my sandwich, I asked for no onions. I was pretty sticker-shocked at the price. ~$9.50 for a sandwich and chips!? Really!? OK, lets see what we've got here. So my friend gets her sandwich first. There was not lettuce or mixed greens or anything of that sort on it, even though the menu clearly read "mixed greens" in the ingredients list. So how do they fix this? They just dump a pile of spinach in her sandwich basket for her to figure out on her own. Then I had to wait at least 10-15 min for my sandwich to come out. This is halfway reasonable considering I asked for it hot (panini style), but the wait was excessive. Especially considering what came out. The sandwich I ordered was such a pathetic excuse for a sandwich I almost took it back and asked for a refund. I didn't though, I should have, but I decided to tough it out. The sandwich tasted ok, but the bread was soggy (even though it was panini'd, I know, how did they do that!?), and overall thoroughly unimpressive. Then guess what? It had onions on it! Big surprise there. I considered talking to the manager, complaining, saying something while I was there, but I didn't want it fixed. I wanted to get out of there and just try to warn other patrons that this place really isn't what it's cracked up to be.

Okay. I know we didn't have coffee, but if it's on your menu it's open for discussion. We had a chai blend (I had straight Chai and my wife had chai charger). The beverage was weak. The meat breakfast burrito was pretty good as well as the breakfast sandwich. For $20 for two we felt that the cost was a little high for what you got. We did like their outdoor seating.

3 stars...only because the coffees I've had weren't that bad, there is wifi, and it's a cute place to sit and work. Walked down here for lunch and waited close to 20 minutes for my sandwich. It wasn't very crowded so I'm not sure why it took so long to make. I was going to order the hi-ho tuna, but the cashier mentioned a tuna melt. I was pretty excited about my melt.. but then I took a bite of it. It was so salty (I'm still guzzling down water as I'm writing this) and not much cheesy melty goodness... My friend said her sandwich wasn't impressive either. After them forgetting to put her order in and us having to wait again, you'd think they would try to blow her mind with an awesome sandwich. No such luck. Also, it was $15 for two sandwiches! Pretty expensive for sub par food. Next time I come for a coffee or to study, I won't forget to eat before I get there!

My first 5-star rating and I am glad it was the Windy Saddle Café who got it! Great service (even when it's crowded - which is often) and food fare - especially for an independent café which, like almost all others, has to compete with the corporate behemoth down the street (I mean Starbucks, dummy, not Higher Grounds). Stayed in Golden for four days and went to the Windy Saddle every morning w/ my mother and family...everyone, every time was quite pleasant and happy to serve you. The coffee was excellent (espressos and latte drinks) as were the hot and cold breakfast foods which are baked and made fresh every day - great berry squares, by the way. I even gave the vegan muffins a go (and that stuff usually tastes like crap!). Like their other baked items, the two vegan pastries that I had were quite good indeed.

I came here specifically to kill a bit of time before dinner with friends. Having never been to town, it was nice to find a coffee shop with well stocked list of drinks including bottles of Izze and Boylan's cream soda. Good seating, helpful staff and a fun location downtown to boot. Didn't have occasion to try the baked goods this time, but absolutely a place I'd visit again.

Joined a friend here for a late breakfast and found it to be a cozy environment with excellent breakfast sandwiches. The service, while prompt was disappointing. The cashier/Barista? took my order (breakfast sandwich and americano) and as she rang me up, answered the phone, while making change for me. Our food arrived and I dug in, and then realized: americano? The casher had placed the empty and blank cup on the espresso machine and disappeared. How disappointing. When I told the guy manning the register, he offered only a simple sorry and made the drink. Had he made up for it (offered extra shots perhaps) I would rate this place 5 stars.

Went there today and ordered a regular drip coffee for $2.45. Obscenely overpriced even for Golden, but I didn't mind so much because I was going to sit down in one of their comfy chairs and use their wi-fi for an hour or two. It all evens out in the end, right? Not really. I sat down and went to log onto the wi-fi. Next to the network name (windysaddle2 or something), there was a red "X" instead of the bars showing the signal strength. I played around for a few minutes trying to get it to work. Got nothing. Although they were very busy and I hated to interrupt them, I had just paid $2.45 for 40 cents worth of coffee, so I figured I had the right to talk to someone about the wi-fi given that I would not have even bought coffee here if I had known the wi-fi wasn't working. I approached the manager without being rude or demanding. Aware that the world doesn't revolve around me, I acknowledged the fact that they were busy and I wasn't thrilled about having to interrupt them, but could he please reset the router? He said "We are too busy. I am not going to bother with this today. I will call the cable company on Monday." Now this in itself wouldn't be so bad. Business is business. The problem is that he was very unprofessional about it. Rude tone of voice. No apology whatsoever. No offer for any type of redress. Just a very "fuck you" attitude all around from him. While the management alone deserves one star (actually zero stars but that's not an option on Yelp), I gave this place two stars because of the very helpful and very friendly young woman (who looks uncannily like Alyson Hannigan from Buffy and How I Met Your Mother fame) working the register. She witnessed the incident between me and the manager and offered to give me a free refill on my coffee for my troubles (which normally cost 75 cents). A very kind gesture on her part. I let her know that the world would be a better place if more people shared her customer service skills, and that she ALMOST made up for her extremely rude boss. Add all this to the fact that their storefront does not display the hours they are open, so if you happen upon the place when they're closed you have no way of knowing when they will be open again. Also, the menu (the menu found on the website, the paper menu taped to the front window AND the menu on the chalkboard above the register) has no prices for their food items. Is this some new trend I am too square to understand or are the owners just incompetent in addition to rude? tl;dr: horrible management, great employee

We heard Windy Saddle was bike friendly so headed over for lunch. Big sign out front said not to hang bikes on gate and to bus your own table. Felt very bike "unfriendly". We rode on to find friendlier fare elsewhere in Golden.

Great vibe, service w a smile, free wifi, located in the middle of Golden, free 2 hr street parking, great coffee. My bf and I ordered 2 pastries -- the blueberry pear upside down cake & double chocolate muffin. Unfortunately the pastries were very disappointing as they were very dry (perhaps a few days old). Next time we'll just order coffee.

Not good, not bad. About what one might expect for a cafe in a town the size of Golden. Also, don't be fooled by the patio, this a serve-it-yourself style place.

Hands-down the best baked goods around and all house-made! Great staff. Recently switched coffee brands again and it's an improvement. Hopefully this will last awhile as there's been a succession since switching off the Al Terra

great spot but the dozen or so flies that are there every time i visit completely ruin the experience. yuck! someone needs to do a deep cleaning and fix the fly issue stat. a deep cleaning is in order.

Been a few times and it's one of the few places around which is consistently good. I always get the breakfast burrito and it's great - nothing else seems like quite the right thing to order. Coffee is better than average as well! It's a very casual place but the staff is always friendly. Wanted to go back this morning but the wait would have been too long.

I have been to the Windy Saddle Café on two occasions and neither time have I been impressed. The café is in a great location and has cute ambience. My issue is really with the quality of the coffee. My first trip I had a mocha and a house made cinnamon bun. The mocha was milky, over sweet, and tasted a little burnt. The cinnamon bun was pretty good. My most recent trip was to fuel up for rock climbing. I had a smoothie and a regular drip coffee. The smoothie was delicious but again the coffee disappointed. So I suppose what I am driving at is that I would stop in for a bite to eat or possibly for a beverage that is not coffee.

Great live music the evening that we were there. I really enjoyed the summer atmosphere and the evening feel of Windy Saddle. We did get hosed on our pizza, they ran out of crust and asked if we wanted to have it on some baguette. We said yes thinking two halves of baguette with pizza makings on top would be what we got for $9. We got one half of baguette, and felt like we got screwed over. Now I know better, but overall a great experience. Go for the live music in the evenings, support local music and get some coffee but skip the food.

8am Sunday morning and the place was just starting to draw a nice crowd. We walked in and there was no line though! Chris & Ben both choose the breakfast burrito - make sure you get it smothered! There was a pork option and a veggie chili & both choose pork (although the barista stated that the veggie was spicier!). This pork chili had the most amazing flavor and a definite kick! Chris said he thought it was the best green chili he's had. I tasted it and it was delish! I ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich and it was very good. Homemade croissant was a nice touch for sure. Fun atmosphere, good music and friendly, helpful staff. A definite must if you're in Golden!

Came here on Friday after thanksgiving and it was packed. They have a room in the back where kids can play and lots of couches around so the parents could chat while the kids had fun. The family ordered sandwiches their selection is limited but run a wide range of styles. I think everyone in the family ordered something different and we had one of everything they offered. Everyone was pleased and my sandwich was very tasty. I also got a Latte which used a very good roaster and was surprised to get such good coffee in golden.

Soon as you walk in there's a howdy on the front door to greet you. If your in the Golden area, this is an adorable stop. Windy Saddle was suggested to me and I'm glad we visited. The area around it feels like a small-town & the latte's here are delicious.

Their coffee is ok but last time I bought it they charged me $18 for just over a pound and the coffee is not worth that. They changed the policy on a free cup when you buy a pound to only a free small. I've not been impressed with any baked goods I've had from them and wasn't thrilled with their lunch. I refuse to go back and get my coffee in Boulder. I won't give them my money and I would recommend Starbucks over these guys, you'll probably save a few bucks.

Their food serving hours differ considerably from the hours they advertise as open. So after a 30 min drive to get here on a Sunday afternoon, we have to leave cause we get there 3:07pm. I was pretty pissed. Looks like a nice little Golden hang-out and would have liked to try their grub.

Coffe was good but you don't get a lot for your money. The free wi-fi was totally unaccessible and after 15 minutes of trying to connect I just finally gave up!

Windy Saddle is my go-to coffee shop here in golden! Everyone is very nice, and there is always delicious food. They make everything fresh from their breakfast burritos to vegan cookies to bagels (my fav!). It is a great coffee shop atmosphere. They are kid friendly, but they keep them in the "buckaroo" area in the back. This is nice because parents can sit and chat while their kids play and don't bother the rest of the customers. Recently, they've started serving beer/wine and dinner on friday and saturday nights *6-9pm. That is certainly worth a try!

Update Nov 2013 - Really really excited to see them back open!!! But still hoping to see some great veggie meal options get added to their menu! Wi-Fi is still pretty unreliable making it a great place to meet, or read, less of a great place to actually work. ______ I would actually give this place 5+ stars for a morning coffee shop and 2.5 for a lunch spot. Which is probably a good thing otherwise I might actually need to change my address to 1110 Washington Ave :P) Caveat - I am a vegetarian. So their lunches are probably awesome if you are a meat eater (they look awesome). But the veggie lunch choice is pretty sad really. And it always bumms me out because I know they could do better. But their coffee is awesome. The baked goods are awesome. The vibe is awesome. The veggie breakfast burritos are even pretty great.

I love the old building--I remember it as a hardware store. Confirmed several times now, their coffee and espresso drinks tend to be on a weaker side. The latte is just a coffee flavored milk. We tend to go for coffee elsewhere. They have a very good food and pastry selection. Their granola dish is one of my favorites, not stingy on fresh fruit at all; I share it with my dogs who love yogurt. We've also tried some soups, and those weren't disappointing either.

Super cute coffee shop in downtown Golden with amazing food and service. So friendly and sweet! Their pastries look AMAZING but I stayed on the straight and narrow with their housemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit and found myself thinking it was so delicious I was glad I didn't get a pastry! Free wifi, just ask at the counter for the password.

If you can find your way to the counter (it looks like a cyclone ran through here), count on waiting a while for service(not busy, I just think they are preoccupied). This isn't the place, I haven't eaten here in a while since sandwiches seemed to have a bunch more going for them. I came back and it hasn't gotten better. Better choices on Washington st.

Wow has Golden changed! (This is not the Golden of my childhood.) I tried so very hard to pass up the chocolate ganache brownies at Windy Saddle but....I mean, come on, what crazy person could? They are the perfect example of the creative, yummy goodness that comes from their (as much as possible) organic, all-natural, local and house-made food. If I had time to sit, I would enjoy the high ceilings, exposed brick, natural ventilation and big windows that look out to the surprisingly busy Washington Street. P.S. For all you coffee loving parents, there is a special place for kids in the back (check out the mural).

The Windy Saddle is where I always take visitors for breakfast when they're new to Golden. The breakfast burritos are good and the street seating is nice and helps you get a feel for the place (right beneath the "Howdy Folks!" sign). The coffee is alright, the smoothies are really hit or miss (depends on who's behind the bar) and the pastries are also a mixed bag. The quiche is always pretty good and I've had good luck with their muffins.

    (4)
  • Teresa W.

Ack. Honestly, the only reason I've ever been here is because they have an indoor play area for my kid. I've only gotten the quiche to eat and usually just get a beverage while my daughter plays, so my review is rather incomplete. But I just don't feel a very friendly vibe - no one greets me when I come in, the cash dude doesn't smile - I feel like I walked into a party uninvited. And if you've read any of my reviews, then you know customer service is huge for me, hence the 2 stars.

I love this coffee shop!!! and I need to tell you why. First and for most they have great customer service. The one thing I hate about other coffee shops is every other week there is a new barista. At the Windy Saddle, you get to know your baristas cause they stick around. I like that the owners actually work in their coffee shop. I like to know who Im giving my money too. The baked goods are fresh and inviting. I feel like everyone really cares about you. Also, I like that this coffee shop is clean and busy. I dont like to go to a coffee cafe that is not busy. It makes you wonder what is wrong with it. Im a clean freak and if the place is not clean, I would never come back. This place for the most part is spotless. I only have 1 small minor complaint. The sandwiches are awesome but for the price I feel you should get a small bag of chips or something included. The sandwich alone is a little over priced. Keep up the good work!!!

My rating is solely based on their hot chocolate, iced lattes, and BREAKFAST BURRITOS. Seriously. I work down the street, and if I have a chance I always stop at Windy Saddle for breakfast. The service is usually slow (because good food takes time!) so I call ahead and get it to go. Veggie burrito = sun-dried tomatoes, black beans, jack-cheddar cheese, spinach, and eggs... smother that with pork green chili (which isn't spicy but IS perfectly seasoned) and you've got an A+ breakfast. Tell your friends you won't share. Because, well, you wont! P.S. for those wondering what a Windy Saddle is, see the JeffCo Open Space page: jeffco.us/openspace/open…

ANY place with a play area and toys for kids, allowing burnt-out parents a tiny moment to enjoy a sip of coffee or a nibble of food gets 5 stars, regardless of the quality of the food or service (do you hear that, business owners?). Luckily, the Windy Saddle's coffee is great, the food is healthy and yummy, and the staff (despite their edgy look and your fears that they might be too cool to serve you) are all smiles and eye contact... Does it get any better? And for those of you who shudder at the thought of sharing your coffee-shop space with wailing children (I don't blame you), take heart -- the play area is in the back of the cafe, so you can enjoy your java on the comfy sofa up front in relative peace. Two huge thumbs up -- as long as it's open, we'll be regulars.

Favorite place to go when I am visiting my daughter and husband in Golden. Good coffee and the chai tea is incredible. I LOVE the yogurt and granola. Fresh fruit and homemade granola.

So a few changes to Windy Saddle since I last reviewed. They changed the layout of the furniture which is great, much more open now and easier to walk around. The started using playing cards to keep track of orders, also working great. My favorite thing to get is the veggie burrito smothered in the meat chili, yummy!

We LOVE LOVE Windy Saddle! And for so many reasons. Initially we loved it because they are super kid friendly, with small tables and chairs as well as high chairs, and have expanded their play area to a small room in the back with toys, books, and games. Then we loved their food, from their wonderful breakfast burritos to the delicious baked goods (of which many are gluten-free or vegan) to their refreshing lunches and now their excellent dinners, complete with wine and beer. Yes! Soon we realized that even when we are not with our kids, we stop by WS because their coffee is so excellent. And lastly, the atmosphere is welcoming for people of all types. Quite possibly the best place in Golden!

This morning: 11/18 We ordered two cappucinos and 3 pastries out of the case. We were the only customers at the counter but it took 15 minutes to get our drinks. Expecting the perfect cappuccino from the Windy Saddle website photo -spider web design in great creme... were sadly given poor shots with frothy foam that a real barista would have tossed out. The nut bar, coffee cake and peanut butter chocolate swirl bar were all overly sweet.

What a wonderful place!! Being a refuge from a women-only baby shower (never understood that concept), I searched on Yelp for a place in Golden, CO for a coffee place. I ended up here, where I sit now, at Windy Saddle Cafe. Delicious, thick, hearty chicken chowder soup, excellent latte, very nice staff, and just overall good juju at this place in the old part of Golden. You won't be disappointed.

Our party of 5 stopped in the Windy Saddle after a day of shopping and antiquing. It was a great choice! My chipotle turkey something or other wrap was amazing and the coffee was superb. The staff were nice and the decor was great. We were only there for a half an hour and were recharged to climb the red rocks!

Skip Starbucks for sure and come here! The best Chai lattes and cinnamon rolls ever. I love the staff and there is a play room for kiddos. I love stopping here after I run along the river or before I go to the farmers market. It is comfortable and chill. Oh, and the smoothies are great after a run.

This is a coffee house I've gone out of my way to visit. Good people work here and it always feels like an inviting place. They serve Alterra coffee from Wisconsin. It's the best. Whenever I'm in or near Golden, CO, I'll go here.

The coffee shop is always a Mommy and Daddy treat because the coffee is so good and there is a kids room that allows for a couple of uninterrupted sips. We stop in any time we can. There is always service with a smile and the ambience is great. On Golden First Friday's they have had good live music that everyone can enjoy.

This is a great little cafe with very good food (breakfast burritos are definitely recommended). The ambiance is terrific and it's right in the heart of downtown Golden. What's not to like?

love this place! Really is a gem and so comfortable to just relax in; like a coffeehouse should be. Oh, and there is a kid play room in the back to help ease us moms

Has a very nice ambiance. Very comfortable couches and pretty good coffee. They charge for the second cup of coffee ($0.75) and are fussy about letting you use the internet. (ie. not the best customer service). I definitely prefer Cafe 13 hands down! All the coffee you want (and good too).

i went there for bfast. Order a hot choc and croissant sandwitch. It was ok. I think it is the same as corner bakery. the hot choc is ok, but too sweetfor my taste. Nice staff and cozy place. I do not see anything special. I did not tryany of their pastries.

Our new favorite place to eat out... we just wish they were open in for dinner. Great food - lots of naturals and organics - all tasty. Excellent coffee, but the clincher for us was the atmosphere. You can sit outside if it is a nice day, or there is a sofa in front of the fireplace, big comfy chairs to read in, or big and small tables. Or if you have kids you can sit closer to the play area where you can eat in peace while you kid(s) play with the great toys. Thank goodness for an alternative to McDonalds and Red Robin!!!
