The sushi was great (salmon, tuna, albacore, and eel), but the rolls were only so-so.

This was the very first place I had sushi. I feel I need to add the caveat that I always went here with a work group and so I never had to pay out of pocket. The sushi is great and they have some unique rolls. This is an ideal place to go with a bigger group and the sushi boat adds a fun element. Staff is super friendly and attentive.

It used to be better. Sushi Uokura used to be a nice little sushi place on the outskirts of Boulder where you could go with a large group or as a romantic couple. The service is still really nice but they lost their liquor license well over a year ago and don't seem to have any interest in getting it back. Instead they have changed over too all you can eat sushi all the time which, if you are in to quantity over quality, is a great deal, especially if you have kids. Half price! The sushi is not as tasty as it used to be and the lack of plum wine knocks it down a star. If they got their liquor license back I would come a lot more if I was only looking for A-OK sushi.

LOVE this place! Fresh sushi for very reasonable prices. Sushi comes out quickly, considering there's only one sushi chef, and it's always presented beautifully. I always order the Golden roll, which is their house roll and is delicious! The layout of the restaurant is odd....looks like an old house with parts added on at different stages, but never finished well. Floors aren't level in spots. Service is attentive without being annoying. This is definitely the kind of sushi place you could bring your well-behaved kids to; there are usually kids around, making kid noise but enjoying themselves!

Sushi was fresh and the sushi chefs were entertaining. Definitely sit at the sushi bar because waitstaff is SO slow. I filled my own water instead of waiting any longer. The owner was very sweet though and gave me some fresh fruit for free at the end for dessert.

The best sushi in colorado, hands down. Great prices and the owner is awesome!!! I eat here every Christmas for the all you can eat party!! Also, a few weeks ago they had started all you can eat on Sundays. We are going back tonight to see if they are still doing it in light of the tragedy in Japan.

Decent sushi but pieces were larger than I usually have or prefer. Flavor of the spicy tuna was not familiar or what I expected but rather was just spicy. The wait staff were polite but service was extremely slow. They told us that it was regular to have such a long wait for our food (1.5 hrs). Setting was cozy. Not a place to take a toddler or if you want faster service but decent option if you can't find a closer place.

This place is pretty great! Nice to have a place to grab descent sushi without having to go clear into the city!

$13 all you can eat lunch special can't be beat! Pretty limited as far as the rolls go but tuna and salmon a la cart pieces were delish, gyoza and apps were also solid. Nestled in between dozens of car dealerships there is pretty limited parking unsurprisingly. I will proclaim this A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

GROSS! Stay away. By far the worst sushi I have ever had. The all you can eat menu had a very limited selection of choices. Miso soup had a very odd taste to it. But the sushi had a very chewy consistency, nothing I've ever experienced. They didn't have any specialty rolls just all the plain Jane ones. I literally was on the verge of puking while chewing on their rolls. Cleanliness and service was lacking.

Wow, Never would I of suspected this place was inbetween Golden and Lakewood. Very Unassuming. The Parking lot is small. Lots of seating inside though. I Sat at the Sushi Bar and Did all you can eat. Others say the All You can Eat menu isnt big but it satisfied me. I ordered Fried Tofu as an Appetizer which was a little hard to grab with chop sticks but delicious. Cant remember the rolls I ordered. But man they were big. And not over filled with rice either. Never felt rushed. Friendly staff my drink always stayed full. And speedy service with making your rolls. Lots of people came in to get it to go. And they seem to know their regulars.

Delicious sushi. Fresh sushi. Deep fried sushi! I love sushi. This is one of my favorite sushi places. The non-spicy rolls come with eight pieces, too. The service is good, and sometimes the sushi chef will even bark at the waitress if you have been sitting at the sushi bar too long without your other orders. Of course, I have to mention that this is another restaurant in a cute little house, which in my world always adds to the charm. Also: Check out special holiday weekends- you might be in for an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet!! We went for Easter and it was a great feast (and it was a great spread of different rolls). The udon and the pork katsu is also wonderful.

Came here in a large group for the ayce sushi lunch! And I have to say, the value at this place is unbeatable. I paid a total of $16 for an insane amount of food... Not to mention, the sushi was very tasty and the fish quality was pretty decent for an ayce place! The selection was pretty limited, but the rolls they did have were delicious. I recommend trying the tempura rolls! All in all, really good value for an ayce for some very tasty sushi!

Okay, it's been a while and the sting of the unseeded jalapeno has worn off. I went back to Sushi Uokura for lunch today and had the most delicious rolls ever - all of which had jalapenos in them but they were properly prepared with all the seeds removed so they provided the perfect combination of heat and crunch to each roll. My favorites today were the Las Vegas (crab, eel, cream cheese, cucumber, jalapeno), The Ninja (spicy tuna, jalapeno) and the Tokyo (spicy tuna, cream cheese, jalapeno) rolls. Each roll was very lightly tempura battered and served all warm and luscious..... Mmmmmmm..... Excuse me while I have a smoke.

Delicious sushi, easily in my top five favorites in the metro area. We did the all you can eat sushi (which is a great price at $23). I loved that this also included appetizers, we got two orders of gyoza, which was so yummy! The sushi was amazing, fresh, tempura and sauces were great! The only complaint I have is that it is a very busy restaurant and they seem to be a little understaffed, combine those two and it took 10-20 min. before you're checked in with, and when you pay for all you can eat, you want to make sure you get as much as you can before you get super full waiting to order your next round, which happened to us,and we ended up having to miserably choke down our last roll because we had gotten way to full. Staff is very sweet and informative, we tried egg sushi after talking to the waiter about what it was. Turns out it's not something we would ever order again, but we appreciated the information he gave. We will be back soon for sure :-)

I would say 3-star quality sushi for a 5-star price. $16 all-you-can-eat lunch special. This includes a variety of rolls, sashimi--even the appetizers are included as potential 2nd (or even 3rd) re-orders! As for the apps: We enjoyed the crispy tofu, made to order so it is piping hot. Salmon skin salad is delicious. The gyoza was a little wimpy but I think the other dishes made up for that fact. The tempura rolls were big. The other rolls were about average-sized. Not the freshest tasting fish but still good. Service and speed were fine. The restaurant setting is intimate...I mean a cozy cottage feeling, not romantic. Parking can be dicey if they're busy.

  • Lise S.

There is usually no available parking at this popular restaurant but we lucked out by going at the tail end of the dinner rush. I had not been here in years and was pleased the quality was top notch like I remembered. The host brought us piping hot towels on a bamboo tray that I greatly appreciate. We ate a few of their specials including white toro which was delectable. The chefs are friendly, as well as the rest of the staff. The food is presented tastefully and appealing to the eye. There longevity for an off the beaten path restaurant is reason enough to Good Morning when you get the chance.

This is my favorite place to have a special lunch. The all you can eat lunch special is really a great deal! I haven't found any other sushi restaurant with a similar deal. The sushi itself is great! Be sure to try the golden roll. I wish this place had more parking. I figure more people would find it if it did. But you have to find this place and give it a try. Once you do, you will return. Come during lunch!

Really Delicious Sushi! Service is a little slow but its worth the wait :) the baked mussel's are really good so are the Mr. Crab rolls. Parking kinda sucks and the hours are really weird.

  • Peter P.

Their service could be a little bit better but it is by no means bad; however, I will admit that their food more than makes up for them forgetting to top off your water. In one word, their food is phenomenal. Their pork katsu is one off the best I have had. Very flavorful and well-prepared. Certainly a restaurant worth checking out.

When I used to work in the Lakewood/Golden area, this was my go-to sushi location of choice. Their lunch all you can eat price is great. Try to get there as close to opening as possible. When I got there at noon or so, sometimes you won't find parking in their small lot and then by the time you get your sushi order in, you're probably going to wait a little while. I don't consider myself a hardcore sushi lover so I usually stick with the tamago, tuna and salmon nigiri. I notice a lot of my friends enjoy sushi but nothing "fishy" tasting and I'm the same way. Salmon has a really smooth, buttery texture. Tuna has a meaty, clean taste. The tamago is like eating a sweet, room temperature egg on top of the rice. All really good. For rolls, I usually go with california or any roll that has a crab, salmon or tuna (or any combination of the above). My recommendation is to get there early and if you want a second round of sushi, to put it in when you're a third to a halfway through your first plate (or boat). The servers have always been friendly.

A seemingly popular spot amoung the Golden locals Sushi Uokura's main draw is the all you can eat lunch special for $15.99. The menu has nice variety although the quality of sushi is what you should expect for Midwest Golden Colorado. The inside was quite spacious and the staff is friendly and attentive. The parking lot was full and they seem to have loyal customers who come back time and again. Although I have had better sushi here in Denver I would go back and pay another visit. I recommend checking it out.

Denver, the milehigh city.... milehigh fish.... milehigh sashimi... I would rate this place higher if they claim to be Japanese/Denver fusion. We came to the restaurant because it had all you can eat sushi. However, we decided that it is not worth the $22.95. We ordered a la carte which brought the price to be about the same. The ayce's menu is very limited. the items that we want to eat are not on it. Tonight, the sashimi are not fresh and of lower quality. But it is edible. Service is ok; not good, not bad. Everything seem to be mediocre. Conclusively, it does not represent Denver good eats.

The all you can eat sushi for lunch is a great deal!(Only $16) That deal also comes with a bunch of extra appetizers such as miso soup and edamame, etc. The service was very good and the waitresses were very friendly. Will definitely look forward to coming here again!

No. No, no no. I haven't had sushi in Denver since I moved here from California in August 2013, so it was about time. Being a poor grad student, I was looking for options in Golden that weren't too expensive. Bad decision. While the service was very friendly and accommodating, the sushi we ordered was just not worth it. After living in California (my fellow patron is Asian-Hawaiian), we had impossibly high standards for sushi, especially in land-locked Denver. So while the food wasn't terrible, I just can't bring myself to come here again to satisfy my sushi craving. Best wait until I can (a) afford spending $50/person on sushi or (b) am in a state with a coastline again. One thing they do have going for them is their green tea ice cream. That sh*t was delicious.

Well, the time has come where I decided to venture on over to Sushi Uokura (with a slightly scared feeling) and give them one more shot. I'm so glad that I did, because they have really turned things around. I'm not sure if they are under new management, but they have a new staff (which is very helpful and sweet) and the sushi chef was great as well. We walked in on quite a busy night and were surprised at how quick the service was. If I had a bigger appetite, I would have paid the $23 for UNLIMITED SUSHI (oh yes sushi lovers, you heard that right), but I decided to stick to my usual and compare it to what i've tasted in the past. I ordered the green tea and miso soup to begin with; both came steaming hot and tasted fresh! I stepped out of the vegan box for rolls; Unagi, Vegan Roll, Las Vegas Roll, Spicy Tuna and two more rolls (that I honestly can't remember). Oh...my...goodness....if there was a sushi heaven, this was it. Everything was so elegantly put together and presented in such a fine manner; not to mention the taste was super fresh and enticing! I honestly had to ask our waiter three times if he was sure that the vegan roll was vegan (it was made with a special fermented pickle) because it literally tasted just like fresh caught, sushi grade fish. Thank you so much Sushi Uokura, for fixing whatever previous funk was occurring; this will be my go-to sushi restaurant!

Been coming here every since I was elementary school and I can say they have the freshest seafood! The parking is a little small but to get fresh sushi it's not a problem. The staffs are extra nice as well!

I have been coming here for a long time now as it is probably the best sushi I have found in Denver or surrounding area. Parking is scarce but other then that I love this place. Make sure you try the baked scallop roll. AMAZING! on major holidays when most are closed ( Christmas, thanksgiving,Easter ) they are open and have the best 25$ per person all you can eat sushi you can find. They also have all you can eat daily but there is leas to choose from.

Food was great, but I won't ever go back. I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy last year which made my stomach 1/6 its original size, so I eat protein first, then veggies, and I forgo carbs when I can. I eat sushi all the time because of this. I ordered the all-you-can-eat lunch for $16 after studying all their menu options. I only ordered one time and ate all my fish, skipping the rice. They charged me an additional $2 because I didn't eat all my rice ("... just this time. Next time we will charge you MORE than the $2 if you leave the rice.") So, you're telling met that if I HAD eaten ALL my rice, I would NOT have been charged extra??? I'm STILL shaking my head. I even tried to explain my situation to the waiter, but it was completely lost on him. So I paid the extra money and decided to just write about my asinine experience here and never return.

Great Sushi period. All you can eat for $16 is an excellent deal. I would eat here even if it were full price. Some of the best salmon sushi I have had. Don't look here for atmosphere, go for the food. Wait staff is friendly and efficient. Fast enough to easily go for lunch.

In terms of sushi in Colorado, this is one of the top two places I've been to. Excellent all you can eat specials for both lunch and dinner. I love the atmosphere and the fact that it is kind of a hole-in-the-wall type place. It's really hard to learn about Sushi Uokura unless someone who has been there has told you about it. I've been here probably 8 times over the past year and have had very consistent service, good sushi and a good time. I highly recommend the Golden Roll, super delicious. If you have gluten allergy, they will definitely work with you to figure out what sushi rolls you can eat. They do not serve alcohol at this sushi restaurant, so don't expect it. Overall, it's an excellent experience.

I love this place! My boyfriend & I come here a few times a month; their food is cheap, fresh & delicious. The restaurants is off of Colfax in a tiny house-looking building. There's a tree growing through the middle & the restaurant is built around it, pretty cool. I have had great service every time I have eaten there. We take out more often than dine in & can usually get away with spending less than $35 for 5-6 rolls which works great for the two of us. Good variety of fish & seafood to choose from. You must try the Baked Scallop Roll & the Vegas Roll is very nice & crispy but a little big for my liking. They are currently expanding a few rooms including a patio. Also, I believe they do not currently serve alcohol.

The worst $30 bucks I have ever spent: What a complete waste of money, no value for the dollar here. Just to let you readers know, I spent seven months in Japan with Sushi galore, and I am embarrassed to call what I had here, "Sushi". It was mainly rice and cream cheese with a hint of fish. The mackerel and salmon nigiri were the same, a whole lotta rice with a sliver of fish. Horrible way to spend a part of Friday night but hey, I still have Halu Sushi down the street and they haven't let me down yet: halusushigolden.com .

  • Robert H.

Came here not realizing they were closing less than half an hour before I arrived. They still made all the sushi I requested and I didn't feel rushed to leave at all. When I asked if they were closing I was assured I could take my time. The restaurant lacks curb appeal, and the small parking lot probably would've been an issue during busier hours. That aside, I was pleased with the service and will be going back.

  • Bethany W.

All-you-can-eat menu is a no-go. Every roll offered either had cream cheese or was deep-fried, with a big helping of mayo-based sauces on top. Now, I'll chow on a Philadelphia roll with gusto, but when every roll is a variety of the same, it makes me think they're trying to mask the quality of the fish. That is not sushi. The regular menu looks better, but I'm not willing to drop the change to find out.

I have been here a couple times now. The place has its ups and downs. The sushi is terrific from the bar. Simply fill out an order form and hand it to the chefs for a good meal. I have had the basic sushi to the more advanced ones. Their tempura items are great; I have been satisfied with the tempura sushi and especially the tempura green tea ice cream. I haven't tried anything away from the sushi menu nor do I intend to; the sushi is simply too good to pass up. Over the three times I have been here, I can tell you that the service needs improvement. The waitresses took their time talking to us about drinks and were usually slow delivering them. Consistently, it took over 20 minutes to get any contact from the wait staff. (Yes, my water glass was empty.) At this point, we have just taken the sushi directly from the chefs, because the waitress would have taken another 10 minutes. From the bar, I could see them chatting with each other while ignoring customers. It's a major disservice to customers and ever worse for the hard-working chefs who prepare excellent sushi. As such, I can't justify giving them more than three stars.

Taste: 5 stars The Golden Roll rocks! I had the all-you-can-eat lunch. The Golden roll and Vegas roll are super tasty. They are the Tempura rolls, which means fried. I also like the Unagi (freshwater eel) sushi too. Price: 5 stars Very tasty food for very reasonable price. It only costs me $20 for this lunch include everything. I am so full. Environment: 4 stars It is a cozy place for having a lunch in a such hot hot summer, but they do NOT serve alcohol drinks due to the permit for now. Service: 3 stars This is the only downside I feel that day. The waitress is quite busy when I was there. I have to ask a couple of times to get my tea refilled, but she is nice. The sushi chef is very nice and professional. Definitely recommend!

We eat here often. I pick up to go on my way home from work or we meet here. Manga & the staff are so very friendly. The sushi is fresh, nice size pieces & reasonably priced. They have a good selection on the menu. Decor is very basic. I would recommend this restaurant.

I've been coming here for lunch for years. The only complaints I have are that parking can be a challenge, and they have limited hours. Check before you come to make sure they are open! Beyond that, you won't find a better local deal on sushi and it's always wonderful to come enjoy the food here (especially the Golden Roll). Yum.

  • Cat S.

Be forewarned! The parking lot is pretty tiny. We ended up having to park on the neighborhood street, which was also filling up. With THAT said, the sushi was delicious and fresh! I think the price is comparable to other sushi restaurants. I went with the sashimi plate, which is 3 cuts of 4 varieties: red snapper, tuna, salmon, and albacore. I think my favorite was the salmon and albacore. The tuna wasn't as fresh as the other fish. The boyfriend and friend got tempura rolls, and they were all delicious! They are lightly battered, so it doesn't feel/taste too heavy or overwhelming.

Have eaten here a few times in years past, and last night's experience was a little less than we'd expected. First, we sat at the sushi bar. We usually like doing that since you get to see the sushi being made and talk to the sushi chef. But the owner/chef last night was interested in banging out the sushi ASAP, and watching the Broncos. Nothing wrong with that. We were watching too. But he kept getting in the way and talking up all the action. Generally, a bit bothersome. On to the sushi . . . well not quite. I was going to give them 2.5 stars and round down for last night, but the hot saki they served was at the perfect temperature and was one of the better bar sakis we've had. The sushi, unfortunately, was not as good as I remembered. Some of the pieces were a bit dried out (the maguro, in particular), and the aji, while very tasty, was overly dressed in too much of a vinegar sauce/garnish. Actually made the rice deconstruct when you tried to pick it up. While the servers were nice and efficient, they never asked us if we wanted soup or salad or anything else, for that matter. Dinner ended with no fruit offering or a question as to whether we wanted dessert. In general, an OK experience. Not really an A-OK experience, but I'm chalking it up to a game night misadventure and hoping for more next time. Hmmm. Just as I was about to post this and rate them at 3 stars, I remembered that the dish that kicked up the price last night was their lobster roll, and it was really disappointing. Little, if any, taste of lobster. Essentially tasted like tempura whoknowswhat. So ya know what? Even though I'd wanted to give these guys 3 stars because they're usually at least that, if not ranging into 4 star-land, I'm going to be faithful to my gut and give them what they deserve. Uokura, you weren't that good last night, I'm sorry to say. 2 stars is the right rating, but I send it with a message that we'll probably give you another visit and hope for more, just 'cause you've been pretty good in the past.

This was by far the worst Sushi experience I have ever had. The food was awful and so was the service. The floors were dirty and looked like they haven't been vaccumed in days. We ordered 4 rolls and they all tasted the same salty and bland. We will not be going back.

Of the two sushi restaurants in Golden, I much prefer Sushi Uokura. Everything about it is just slightly nicer than Halu. The sushi is made fresh and it's delicious. They have a slightly better selection, and the chef is more fun to talk with. The decor is more homey. The waitstaff... actually, the waitstaff is about the same in terms of paying attention and being polite but curt. A standout is the tempura green tea ice cream. Fried green tea ice cream, served in a hollowed out orange, with orange slices on the side. It's super delicious. This is where I and friends go for sushi when the occasion is a little bit special, or more important, compared to Halu.

There are so many things aesthetically wrong with Sushi Uokura and yet I love it. Food: If you're coming here for lunch, try out the sushi lunch special ( yelp.com/biz_photos/xRfh… ). You get one of all the popular nigiri sushis, six tuna rolls, miso soup, and a salad. Pretty good deal for $13, I think. Unfortunately, I didn't heed the advice of my coworker who took us to this place, and just got a Golden roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/xRfh… ), a deep fried salmon roll. It was okay, but not the best tempura roll I've ever had. Atmosphere: This place is a house. Literally. You drive into this neighborhood looking area and park on a gravel parking lot. Once you enter, it looks like almost any other Japanese restaurant. One thing I enjoy about this place is their attention to detail. The plates they use are gorgeous lacquered boxes or nice Japanese ceramics. Service: Fast. Not much else to report. Synopsis: This place is not crap-in-your pants good, but Uokura is the best sushi I've had in Colorado so far.

I just went here for lunch, for the all-you-can eat sushi. You fill out an order form and they bring your request on a beautiful platter. Keep ordering more as you wish. I was impressed, the sushi rolls and sashimi was fresh and delicious. It cost $16, which is actually a steal for all-you-can-eat good sushi, but for me that's a bit too much to spend on lunch. Update: I thought I should add that if you don't like raw fish, the all-you-can-eat option is probably not for you, as 80% of it is sashimi or raw.

I've been to the west coast many times, Japan three times, and I can tell you without a doubt that their rolls are the best in the world! I was introduced to this restaurant by some Japanese friends, and over the years, all the Japanese people I've known agree that this is the closest to home they've found in Colorado. The owner of this restaurant was from a very successful restaurant in L.A. The cuts of their fish are ample, and very fresh. Their spider roll is a better price and more expertly cooked (most places including sushi den overcook the crab, and it gets gritty). Their Las Vegas roll is seriously the roll that I always recommend non-sushi lovers order to make them believers and I've yet to be proven wrong. But it's not just their rolls that are great. Their nigiri is some of the best (I've had better in Hawaii, and one place in Seattle), as it's fresh, they give you Japanese sized cuts (where the fish trails off both ends of the rice), and the rice is perfectly made with the a good amount of rice wine vinegar to give it that smoothness that so many western sushi restaurants miss. My favorite times to go there are for lunch and major holidays where they have all-you-can-eat! It's so good, I've convinced my family that our Thanksgiving tradition is to eat at Sushi Uokura.

Stay away. It's typical; if you order all you can eat, it will take forever for them to bring out each plate. Then they threaten to charge you "full price" for everything you don't eat. It's a gimmick- stay away. Just like Godzilla.

Once again, I returned to try the restaurant's Yosenabe & Tempura dinner entree for $18.50. I have been craving nabe, since I came back from Japan about three months ago, but have had a very difficult time in finding something that is suitable; however, this was a good replacement. In my opinion, the Yosenabe entree is very large, so it can be easily shared between two people and there are different types of vegetables and seafood in rather copious amounts, including, mussels, scallops, shrimps, and calamari. The broth itself is very tasty and is perfect if you're craving something warm. The entree also comes with two pieces of shrimp tempura and about five pieces of vegetable tempura that is cooked very well and is accompanied by a tasty dipping sauce. Overall, this restaurant continues to never disappointment me when I really need a good Japanese fix. To Sushi Uokura: "Korekara, moo ii shigoto o tsudukete kudasai."

We stopped here on our way back from the mountains because I was craving some Asian food. You never would have known how cute the inside was based on the exterior. The atmosphere was very pleasant, and the staff was polite. No complaints as far as service goes. The pricing was pretty good as well (not super cheap, but not ridiculously overpriced either). My husband ordered some miso soup, rice, and a dragon roll. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki dinner (which also included miso and rice). The miso soup was very good, probably some of the best miso I've ever had! My portion of chicken was HUGE (I had enough leftover for 2 more meals). The chicken was well cooked, and the teriyaki sauce was different than most that I've had (It was on the thinner side and not sickeningly sweet like so many teriyaki sauces tend to be). It was very good, but I wouldn't say the best I've had. My husband liked his dragon roll, but he said it was a little more fishy than he was used to (There was eel inside AND on top of the roll, and normally he just has eel on the inside of the roll). Bottom line, I would eat here again next time we are on our way back from the mountains.

I was introduced to this place by a friend who knows good sushi. I promptly introduced two other friends. When I lived in Golden, I went here at least twice a month. It's an intimate place with a great patio if you like to have your raw outside. The staff here are invariable delightful. I like waits who are attentive without hovering and they manage that nicely. They will take the time to chat with you if you like or they will stay out of your hair. Do ask them what's good that night. They have the downlow on what's fresh. I never sat at the bar so I can't comment on the chef. Prep time is about what you'd expect--slow for Americans who are always in a rush. But the plating is lovely when you do get your dinner. That's a nice touch. I like my food to look pretty right before I devour it. The only bad thing I could say about this place is do not order unusual mixed drinks--like a Cosmopolitan. My friend and I must have been making the same face because our wait came over to ask if the drinks were bad. She quite casually told us that the bartender wasn't sure how to make the drink. We opted for white wine instead.

This is a pretty decent little sushi restaurant. From the front it doesn't look like much, and it's situated on a little street surrounded by some not so friendly looking structures, but inside it's quite cozy. The five of us got a seat at a round table in a nook, but the restaurant can be crowded as it was tonight. We didn't have to wait around 6 PM on a Friday but if we'd come any later we probably would have been out of luck. Because they were so busy our service was a bit slow, but our waitress brought over some complimentary edamame and apologies. We were also enjoying the company so we didn't much mind the slower service. They have quite an extensive menu with a variety of traditional Japanese cuisine. None of us got any rolls, but the miso soup was served hot, and our fish was fresh. Their tempura is really crispy and nicely prepared, but be warned that you may have an unexpected piece of banana stuck into your veggies! It's very tasty, but not necessarily what you might expect in your dinner :) Their prices are a littler higher than I'd like to pay, but I'll come back again.

I liked it. It was far from perfect anything. The sushi meshi was off, they use either a lower quality of nori or they don't parch it adequately, the fish was okay, not great, the saba shio wasn't carmelized (probably because of too low a temp on the grill) and the presentation needs work (the portion size was good but the plate is a plastic monstrosity and there wasn't adequate color or garnish coverage to make the food not look inadequate. Cabbage, carrots, green onions, even varietal lettuce are reasonably cheap or more interesting garden would be even better.). I could go on about the food but let me get to some other points... parking is like trying to find a space at a party in someone's neighborhood (which it actually is. I pity the neighbors), the place was slammed with mostly hakujins with a few nihonjins in the mix, too dark to read the small print menu, cramped.... So does it sound like I hated the place? I didn't. I would eat there again. The point I'm trying to make is that there are reviews that slam a place with very little explanation other than the fact that there is no accounting for taste or that some people pride themselves on being snobbish or maybe are having a bad day. Dunno. This place reminds me of a time when Denver was a much smaller town. There weren't a lot of choices for ethnic food and they were generally in places that the ehnic majority wouldn't go. Seldom were they amazing or fantastic and they couldn't hold a candle to the great joints in towns with large ethnic communities. But they were good. The people that owned and ran them were hard working, personable and cared about "their" business. Anyone remember Don Don on east colfax (but not after the move to Hampden)? Well, Uokura has that feel but the food isn't quite as good as their's was but like I said before, I'll eat here again.

I love Uokura. It has very good sushi and toro which I love. They have all you can eat specials of very good sushi. I think it's one of the top sushi places in Denver. The only place I like as much is sushi tazu.

I can't say enough about this place! The sushi was amazing, scallop dynamite is mouthwateringly good. They have 'all u can eat' sushi & excellent value. Service was great, quick and server was extremely kid friendly. Terrific experience, I WILL be back soon!

My son wanted to go to Sushi Oukura for his birthday and we had always had very good luck there. This used to be a vibrant restaurant with decent service but killer sushi in a clean and funky little house. It has slid dramatically since changing hands over a year ago. Plus, for over a year they haven't had a liquor license. That is a very bad sign. The men's bathroom wasn't clean and overall it just seems like the wind has gone out of this once great hidden west side gem. The food overall reflected the loss of momentum and pride. The rolls overall were just dank, not overtly bad but struggling for mediocre. I had a bad vibe when I saw that Oukura had no liquor license and then I saw that they had moved to an all you can eat sushi model which is usually the last gasp of a top shelf sushi joint. It's really sad and while I paid the bill, I really felt like my kid got ripped off for his birthday. We probably won't be back.

This is seriously the only decent sushi place in the Denver metro area. Service and food is good..

The food here is good- I won't lie, they have actually spicy spicy tuna rolls and they are delicious. Now service there was never really up to par by any means. But it's sushi- how long does that really take to make? 5 mins? Maybe 10 if the guys is busy or something...but after 30 mins of waiting, the people who came in the same time as us walking out and the table next to us ready to eat- I had enough, and kind of went all Hulk rage on the waitress who said they made a mistake. Yha....it's okay, but let me know before I turn green and rip my shirt off. Or maybe had she come by once to ask if everything was okay or tell us about the food she may have learned the tea taste like cat pee. I wanted something else or maybe just some sugar...but noooo...for the entire meal and even when we FINALLY got our food I had to drink cat pee. I may go back, but at this point probably not- and it may be b/c I'm embarrassed about almost flipping a table over and screaming "What the f-ck!!!" to the point everyone looked at me in the restaurant.

Great sushi, cool little dive with authentic Japanese food. I was traveling and looking for some good sushi. The tempura rolls are BIG, but good. I left satisfied. (that's what she said)

It's a quintessential hole in the wall, but the sushi is good the staff is friendly and the feeling is cozy. We often go for the all you can eat and go away stuffed and happy.

A nice place to stop by for fresh Sushi. Do not be put off by the restaurant's front.

The sushi here was generally ok, but my boyfriend ordered some kind of fried roll that we couldnt even eat. It was almost like they put dog food in it. He ordered a different fried roll to replace the "dog food" one and it wasnt much better (but it was edible). If you are looking for sushi in Golden, I suggest you try Haru.

It's not the BEST SUSHI EVER (that honor goes to a hole in the wall on the southwest end of the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, closely followed by Shiki in Seattle, WA), but for being 1000 miles from an ocean, the quality of the fish is pretty damned good, and appropriate for the market here. My one gripe is that they put teri sauce on a lot of their fare. I'm a soy girl, so I always ask for things with 'no sauce'. It is down home, no frills, no blowtorch sushi. You want blow torches and tall food, go to Sushi Sasa. There are plenty of rolls for the shy crowd who really don't eat nigiri and sashimi, plenty of cooked fare for the non-raw eaters (tempura, varied yakimono) and a very middle of the road raw menu. You may, once in a blue moon find something pretty stellar behind the counter. We always wait for a seat at the counter (which is almost always a shorter wait than for a table), but this way we can see what looks good and ask Ogi-San (owner/itamae-san) what we shouldn't miss.

I don't eat rice so I usually order sashimi plates or rolls wrapped in cucumber or nori. The normal price to wrap rolls in cucumber is around $4-$6 each which is way too much. To my surprise it was only $1 extra to wrap in cucumber at Sushi Uokura. I figured I would give it a shot and get some rolls instead of the sashimi platter. I ordered some miso and edamame to start. The miso came within 10 minutes and it was alright, nothing special. Edamame never came - 20 minutes after I placed my order I mentioned to the waitress that I didn't want them anymore and she was shocked that I had even ordered them. (Perhaps look at the paper I (and you) wrote it down on? Just a suggestion...) At this time everyone else already had their food and was almost ready for their check. Approximately 45 minutes later I finally receive my food. (Did they have to grow the cucumber?) Wow, not worth it at all. I ordered three rolls and ended up getting 4 small pieces for each roll. These were about the diamater of a nickle, 90% cucumber, 10% fish. $30 for this? They were poorly wrapped and weren't even presented well. Was someone watching a How-To YouTube video when making my rolls? Usually it does take a little longer to make rolls wrapped in cucumber, I understand that. Maybe they just need more practice or faster interwebs for their How-to videos. Who knows. Our waitress wasn't friendly at all. The decor/atmosphere was blah. Parking lot is super small. Only good thing going for them is that the spicy tuna is actually spicy. I also had bite of my BF's blue fin, it was tasty. Wish I would have gotten that. Not going to go back though.

When I found out we were going to a sushi restaurant in Golden I was a little skeptical, but overall it was not bad. The sashimi was good and the presentation was fun, but the restaurant itself felt more like a dinner than a sushi place. Good lunch location.

  • Tom W.

Yes, I've had better sushi, but you'll be hard pressed to find any so good this far from the ocean. It's pretty standard fare, but probably the best fit for this market. If you like heat, try the heart attack roll -- tempura fried spicy tuna and jalapeños -- but try it last because you won't be able to taste anything as subtle as sushi afterward. Sit at the sushi bar for the best service. The place gets packed on weekends, so sometimes table service is slow. Plus Ogi, the owner, is a character and jokes with the sushi bar clientele in his heavily accented English.

Sushi Uokura has been one of my favorite sushi places in Denver for years, and I've been an avid fan and supporter, but I fear a good thing as come to an end. As a matter of fact I just removed a 4-star review I gave it a few months ago. Tonight was the first time I've been there in several months, and my gal and I had a bad feeling when we walked in and saw a sign on the door dated Sept 29, 2011 that read basically "Under new ownership and without a liquor license until the new owner can obtain one so no liquor served." The service at Sushi Uokora has never been stellar, but that has always been okay because the sushi has been so good. The service was very poor and it took over an hour to get our food. In the past years I would just grin and bear the below-par service after being blown away by how good the sushi is. I don't want to sound like a hater (I'm usually a good sport more than a critic!) so I won't share any more of the many bad parts of the dining experience we had. I'd try to chalk it up to an off night, but the sushi was so mediocre (and really some of it was downright NOT good) that it seems new ownership has ruined a good thing. After being an enthusiastic return customer for many years with 30+ visits of never bad and always STELLAR sushi, I can't believe it, but I'm writing the place off for good. Sushi Uokora, what happend to you!!?? ;-(

Only been here for lunch. The sushi is pretty good, the service is fair, the atmosphere is bland. I usually have had the sushi lunch or the shashimi lunch. Prices are reasonable. Basicaly, its not bad for lunch, but there is nothing exciting about it.

The food here is pretty good however the ambiance and atmosphere could use some work. Our waitress was very nice but was a little slow to take our order or check up on us. Over all this is much better sushi than you would expect to find in a sleepy mountain town in Colorado, but after having sushi in San Francisco it is hard to give Sushi Uokura a higher rating.

Having come from the Bay Area and traveled extensively in Japan, I can claim some expertise in sushi and Japanese food. And I'm disappointed to say that after visiting Uokura, I'm going to have to keep looking in Denver. The yakitori appeared to have been steamed rather than cooked over coals. The gyoza were cooked in cold oil; they were greasy and small. The agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu) was merely okay, with the broth having none of the classic flavors. The fish quality for the sushi was acceptable (contrary to what you might think, 90+% of the sushi you eat has been previously frozen, so it's not hard to maintain good quality if you start with decent fish), but the California roll was made with krab, and the unagi was cold. Service was slow and harried, and our server was panicked every time we spoke with her; my wife actually held her hand and had her calm down. I dropped a hundred dollars to feed myself and my family, and I won't be returning any time soon.

The best sushi that I have had in Denver. Always very fresh, and the prices are very reasonable. The atmosphere is more casual than most sushi places- but I prefer that. My husband and I eat here now once a week- we call it our "marriage counseling" because even if we were in a bad mood when we got there- we're always in a good mood when we leave. Excellent sushi at reasonable prices.

Lunch was really good. I will happily eat here ANYTIME again. I am here for a week for work and I think this is my daily spot for lunch. Chef was really friendly and helped us out quite a lot with any questions we had. 5 Stars to this Sushi Restuarant.!!!

I've had better sushi, but in Golden I don't think you can do better. Great house rolls, very nice hand rolls, nice saki selection. It's a ramshackle place with a hole-in-the-wall vibe, but the staff is very friendly and the prices reasonable. I've tried all the sushi places in the local area and Uokura still stands out as the best

The vegetarian sushi is okay. The rolls are small, the best veggie one is the squash one. I didn't get any fancy rolls here, just unagi and yellowtail and salmon. All quite good, I haven't tasted poor sushi yet. I base it on my mood, any stomach aches later and drinks help out as well. This place is a 3 star. It's the closet sushi restaurant to our house, so it's the one we go to when I have to have sushi in a middle of a blizzard. Just okay sushi.

It is not your fancy japanese restaurante, but the price is really fair. I went for lunch and had the All-You-Can-Eat, which made us all very happy. I am a fan of all-you-can-eat-sushis and this one has been the best so far. Of course the all-you-can-eat menu does not include all the menu, but it has a pretty fair variety. I'm looking forward to coming back there. The staff was nice and friendly, and the bathroom was very clean. The parking lot is not huge, but I don't see a need for it. There is a lot of room inside, though.

A hidden sushi joint with some good attributes. The decor here is very nice. The sashimi didn't taste as fresh as I would like, but the rolls were very good. The parking is way too small though and the seating fills up very quickly on busy nights so get there early.

I say this is the best sushi in Golden because it is so good we won't try anywhere else. We love the tempura rolls (Golden and Vegas rolls). The Philly and spicy tuna rolls are also delicious. If you love spicy foods, try the heart attack appetizer. If you can, sit at the sushi bar. The chefs are so much fun to watch. Hmmmm, I'm getting hungry now.

Tasty sushi, bland decor. I stopped by for lunch and had an eel handroll and a Vegas roll. Both of these were very good - fresh and full of flavor. The inside, however, could use a bit of work. I was seated in the main dining room to the left of the entrance and there was a door that had a shambolic tape and cardboard thing going on - probably to keep drafts down, but I'm sure there was a nicer way to have gone about it. For me, sushi and Japanese culture in general has to do with aesthetics and beauty, so in that sense, the restaurant was a bit disappointing. Even the best sushi loses a bit of its flavor when you're stuck staring at a shabby DIY job.

This place is me and my husband's FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT and have been going there for years. It's not always the best service and doesn't have the nicest decor, but the food makes up for it. If you like tempura rolls - order the Golden roll. The owner works the sushi bar a lot and he's such a nice friendly guy. I highly recommend this place!
