Great and Consistent. This place always hits the mark for that sushi craving I have. They are fair in their price and provide a good ratio of fresh fish to rice. I have been here at least 5 times and haven't been let down yet. Thank you Halu sushi. BTW, I spent seven months in Japan and this place is spot on for the price....just wish I had a good conveyer belt sushi place close by.

I loves me some sushi. And when I need a quick fix, here in Golden that means Halu. Honestly, there's nothing too special about Halu Sushi's menu. They have a good selection of sushi rolls and sashimi, and it's all prepared decently with fresh fish. They have a decent selection of tempura, some non-fish options, bento boxes. Their staff is polite, if a bit curt. Their prices are definitely reasonable. Their green tea is from a powder, not actual tea leaves, as far as I can tell. They have a small selection of sake, and it's not bad. Yet for all this, there's nothing I think that makes Halu stand out, particularly. It's simply a sushi restaurant. It's certainly OK, but just not impressive.

Despite the low rating, I don't find much really wrong with the place. The sushi was fine. Nothing mind-blowing, but it tasted OK and didn't poison me. It's priced OK, too. It's housed in a converted Wendy's and it has a hard time hiding that fact. They should have worked on the ambiance more. They did put a lot of effort into revamping the bathrooms though--I'll give them that. The service was laughable. It look them 20 minutes to take our order, another 30 to serve us minute quantities of food (OK, the miso soup came fast), and despite our sitting in front of empty dishes for at least 20 minutes, they never cleared the table and brought our bill until we asked. It's not a bad place. It's just that I know I won't volunteer to go back.

If I had to title this review I'd call it "a warning for travelers". Honestly I could have been convinced to give this place three stars but I felt misled by the rating here so I bumped it down to compensate since "meh" basically describes the experience we had today. The way some of the reviews talk about this place, they make it sound like it's worth making the drive TO Golden to eat here. More realistically, however, the food is merely edible with sushi a cut or two above what you'd get pre-packaged at Safeway (the latter being arguably inedible). The place was quite clean and the fountain outside was cute. Sadly those were the two best things about the visit. This place is what you'd expect from a small town "sushi" restaurant (basically the equivalent of your standard small town "Chinese" place). Uninspired, standard, cliche sushi rolls and mediocre entrees that only taste good to those who have never had better. The sauce for the "shrimp with vegetables" was kind of like a "shrimp and lobster sauce" without the egg so it ended up just being water with garlic and salt. The nabeyaki udon wasn't bad but it's pretty hard to mess up broth and noodles. If you're passing through, you might as well wait until you get to Denver for sushi. The sushi rice was both low quality and poorly prepared (i.e., overcooked). The spicy tuna on the samurai roll was abysmal. Not only was it not fresh (none of the seafood was terribly fresh but the veggies weren't bad), they destroyed the flavor by mincing (yes, mincing) it up into a paste (with the consistency of raw sausage) and molding it on top of the roll (like the way you might shred imitation crab and mix it with mayo). This is why you don't do to fish what you do to, say, garlic: when you mince it you break down the cell walls. This releases flavor in garlic; it makes fish taste terrible (and it just looked unappetizing, too). The Aspen roll (shrimp tempura, imitation crab, and seaweed on top) wasn't bad but the seaweed topping washed out everything else. All the other sushi selections were basically the same thing you're going to find anywhere (California rolls, Philly rolls, rainbow, blah blah blah). Aside from the samurai roll, the presentation was ok but nothing earth shattering (ooo they left the shrimp tail on the end so the roll looks like a tail--that's certainly never been done before). The wasabi was extremely mild and the ginger was soggy and stale. For three of us with two entrees, two rolls, one tamago (egg) nigiri (which I think was $.50 MORE than I've paid for the same thing in Cherry Creek), and only water to drink, the bill was $40 (like on the nose--I'm not rounding up from $36). Did I also mention those were lunch prices? Way overpriced for subpar ingredients and cliched menu. Combined with inattentive service (apparently it doesn't matter if they're busy or not since there was only one other table besides us and we never saw our server) and the better options for food in town, unless you're a local, try something else. And if you're confused, some of their marketing (and website) says "Haru" sushi but all their signage says "Halu".

Okay. I feel rather compelled to say that you should eat here as much as you can, because my wife and I went on a Saturday night, and this joint was EMPTY. And Haru most definitely deserves better than that. Haru place isn't one of those hip, cramped, overpriced sushi lounges with mediocre food. It's the exact opposite of that. The service is fantastic: I ordered off the menu and got a spicy tuna donburi, probably contrary to the server himself, but he and the chef were gracious enough to get that made anyway. The rolls are great, especially at the prices. The servings are big enough to take a box home to snack on the next day. And the atmosphere is simply wonderful--roomy, nice booths, wooden walls, well-decorated. This place should be poppin' every night. So go. Thanks.

My wife and I have eaten here about 12 times since it has opened, and have enjoyed each visit. Here's a summary: Food quality. Very good to excellent. We've only eaten the Japanese food (they have other Asian items), and each has been well prepared with fresh ingredients. We've had: Miso and Egg-drop soup, Various sushi, various sashimi, various salads. Food selection: A good menu selection, primarily Japanese dishes but also some Chinese. Drinks selection: they have a fair selection of sake (including unfiltered, my favorite), as well as beer and wine. As we're not big drinkers, I can't say whether or not they also offer mixed drinks (we've never looked), but I suspect they do. Service: We've had fast, pleasant service each time we've visited (sometimes early in the evening, a few times on a weekend late afternoon). Decor: They'e done a good job decorating the inside. The tables are not crowded together and are comfortable, and the sushi bar seems nice (we've not sat there). Price: Their prices are moderate. Halu Sushi is on of our favorite restaurants in Golden.

Really good food and amazing staff. Marv (the owner) is an awesome guy. Highly recommended!

Good sushi at a great price. It is good to see Golden has a good sushi restaurant with great service. The Calamari Tempura and Caterpiller rolls are our favorite. The Marvin roll is quite good as well. Keep in mind that the rolls are larger than most. It is very quite easy for your eyes to be bigger than your stomach. The rolls range from $5 to $10 which is one of the better values for sushi I have found.

Anyone think its funny that they changed their name from 'haru' to "halu"?? I love sushi, and its nice to not have to drive to Denver or Boulder to get some nice rolls. People that give it bad ratings just because its in an old Wendy's building need to get over themselves. That entire strip used to be fast food, and is now starting to be real resturants. I think that's a step up, and I'd much rather have Halu than Wendy's. Just sayin.

Totally solid sushi. Nothing fancy, but it's perfect for those sushi cravings, when perhaps you don't have the $$ to go all out. Check it out- don't be put off by it's location in an old Wendy's.

Love, love, love this place! I have been going here for about two years now and love the owner, staff, and food. It is housed in an old Wendy's building, but as soon as you walk in you encounter a water feature and the sushi bar where you can belly-up and watch them make your food. Or, you can choose to sit in the dining room. We, for some weird reason, sit at the same table every dinner we have there. It is right next to the fish tank and no, they aren't sushi-grade fish...just goldfish :) Things to try: Edamame, seaweed salad, or Thai Spring rolls for appetizers Eel and salmon sashimi And our personal favorite, the School of Mines roll! This roll is cooked and absolutely heavenly. The heart attack roll is good too, but comes in second to the CSM roll :) Try this place and you won't be disappointed!

One of my favorites to visit off old Golden road. Great balance of quality and price! The sushi is well prepared, they have the best California rolls around. If you're looking for nothing but sushi and willing to spend some more, Sushi Uokura down the road is the best around... Fantastic soups, especially the egg drop. The Kung Pao and Sesame Chicken are the best I've had. They fry it so light that it's not all heavy and doughy. Pro tip: make sure to pull the $6 off -or- free California roll coupon right off their website! I use my mobile and just show it to them.

Great place to have sushi while you're in Golden. Everything is fresh and well prepared. The servers are great and the sushi chefs are friendly, too. I've been a couple of times now and sure to go back again.

What a pleasant surprise... Don't let the exterior fool you, once you walk in the door you'll know why I'm writing this review, the atmosphere feels authentically Japanese and the sushi is wonderful, staff is attentive and nice. Great experience!

Was passing through town doing some errands and decided to try it out. Sushi chef/owner was great. Made me a great sashimi sampler with very generous portions and variety. Pleasant atmosphere and great food.

I've gotta say - I was really impressed by this place. As a newly minted resident of Golden, I'll admit this wasn't very high on my list of restaurants to try. After falling into a comfortable routine of a handful of restaurants, I decided it was time to branch out and try a new place in Golden. We weren't disappointed. As someone who is mostly luke-warm about sushi (I know - the horror!) I found that I still had a great time and enjoyed my meal at Halu. As usual, we ordered about 10 times as much food as we actually needed, but we found all of it to be delicious. Our only exception was one of the fried sushi rolls we ordered - there was too much going on there and the flavors just weren't the best. Other than that, we ordered a handful of fairly traditional rolls from their checklist ordering form and enjoyed them very much. We also had an order of Mongolian Beef (did I mention we ordered too much food?) which was delicious and nothing like the typical Chinese food grossness that dish can normally be. The atmosphere is nice, you can tell they put in some work to give the place some ambiance. My only complaint on that front was the lighting - it was way too bright in there! Otherwise though it had a very nice feel. And the wine is cheap, which has to be worth at least 1 star on it's own. Overall, a pretty good choice for a night out in Golden, even if it's in kind of a weird location.

A gem in Golden. The place was packed on a Friday night but we were seated promptly. Everything from the apps (veggie and shrimp tempura) to the sushi (too many rolls to detail) were very good. The hostess is a little brusque, but she's fine. We will definitely be back!

Second time here, sushi is above average compared to other local places and reasonably priced. Service has been consistently friendly, we really enjoy this spot.

Decent spot. We came here en route to Denver from Breckenridge. The service was actually very good, especial considering the fact that I was with a group of 16 people. Although some of the food didn't come out hot, the server was fairly prompt and attentive. The main issue I had here was actually with the quality of the food. We got everything from assorted sushi rolls, chicken/beef entrees, and various appetizers. Foremost, the Kung Pow chicken was horrible. Aside from the fact that it was cold, the sauce was very bitter and chicken had more batter than meat. No one was able to eat this entree, which unfortunately went to waste. The sushi rolls were really good. If I was to visit this restaurant again, I'd probably only order the sushi and egg drop soup. We had 6-7 different sushis, and all of them were great! The ambiance of the restaurant was enjoyable as well. Even though it was previously a Wendy's, the inside of it looks nothing like one! The environment coupled with the service did make up for the subpar quality of the entrees.

I absolutely love this place! The sushi is delicious, as is the rest of their menu. I worked in Golden for several years and this was my go-to place to grab a bite to eat. The owner is so kind and accommodating. The interior of the restaurant is really nice as well -- don't judge it by the exterior look. You can tell they go the extra mile with everything. Great food, great service, and it is very clean! I don't work in Golden anymore and live closer to other sushi places. I've tried them all and nothing compares.

Excellent! Great sushi options. Very impressed by the kids meals too - teriyaki beef was a Benton box with with beef, broccoli, rice, Edamame and 2 big crab Rangoon - my daughter loved it.

Very good! The roll school of mines is filling. Noticed the manager answering the phone, asking how people were & greeting guests. Was nice to eat at the bar in front of the chef. The rolls looked beautiful coming out. Thanks for the great experience.

I love this place! I actually chose to go here on my birthday the last few years because I like it so much. The sushi is super and the service is impeccable. We have only ordered sushi here but have never been disappointed. Everything tastes great so we have tried a lot of rolls. The people are so friendly, give hot towels at the beginning, are constantly filling up drinks, and attending to us, no matter how busy it gets. The prices are decent and even though it's in a converted Wendy's restaurant, they have done an excellent job making it not look like it inside. If you want good sushi in the Golden area, I highly recommend it.

This place is not good for groups. They don't know how to run a business. Writing orders down on scrap paper. Confuses them when you want to split checks. Hospitality is not a word in their dictionary. Out of Towners do not stop here. Food came out cold. Don't get the Kung pow chicken. If you do happen to come here, get the sesame chicken. It's not bad.. 2 STARS!

This is our favorite sushi restaurant in Denver! My husband is a firefighter in Golden. He, regularly, takes his crew here for dinner. And, we, regularly, celebrate with larger parties here (6-15 people). Marvin and his staff do their best to seat everyone comfortably. I, honestly, believe we have tried everything on the menu! Among our favorites are the Marvin Roll, Heart Attack Roll, School of Mines Roll, Yellowtail Sashimi (with jalapeño), Rainbow Roll, and Sumo Roll. All Sashimi is delicious! The menu offers items for everyone, even those not into sushi. We have brought guests that are just starting to enjoy sushi and guests that have been eating great sushi all over the world. No one has ever left hungry or disappointed. We celebrated my birthday here on a Saturday with 14 people. The service and food were great. My mother won't touch sushi, but loved her chicken dish. They even presented me with a cake (they provided) and sang at the end of the night. Saki is great too!!!!

This place was great. The ambiance was so-so, but the food was awesome. Best egg rolls I've had ever in my life, and the sushi rolls were wonderful. Quick service and friendly waitresses. Egg drop soup was delectable, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here at Halo Sushi.

Yum. Yum yum yum YUM. I'm sure a lot of people get turned off by the face that Halu is in kind of a funky location - a converted fast food restaurant of some variety - but in my experience some of the tastiest sushi comes out of some strange locations. Very creative specialty rolls (lots w/ avocado, which my girlfriend and I love), reasonable prices and great service make Halu a fave of mine, will be back soon.

Halu sushi Yummy sushi! My review is a delicious restaurant called Halu sushi. It is a quality restaurant to eat chines at.They have more than sushi, they have other stuff to.So now I will tell you about the restaurant. First I am going to tell you where the restaurant is.If you know where the circle thing in Golden Colorado is then you shall take a right and you will pass the dollar store, but don't go past the Mcdonalds, and finally you will see it. Now I am going to tell you about what the restaurant looks like. When you walk in you would see a waterfall thing to your right. Then you will ask for a table and you will see a bamboo countered sushi bar.You could see a table where you could sit by a fish tank.It looks like you just ernterd china! Next I am going to tell you about the appetizers.First they give the kids a little cucumber platter with three little fried crabs on it,covered with a little sweet sauce. The adults get the same thing but with other stuff on it.They give you(if you order it)crab rangoons, dumplings, and some calamari. Now i am going to tell you about the sushi. It is the best!!!I would do anything to have it!It is homemade sushi, and you can even watch them make it!so if you are hungry for sushi this is the best place to go!! Finally I am going to tell you about the main course.I ordered the sesame chicken. It is just delicious. Honey glazed chicken covered in the finist sesame seeds! So if you ever go you will die for there mouth watering meals! That was sure a quality meal that I had. Also the restaurant owns Mr.Sushi in Littleton Colorado right by Sports Authority. So go, go, go,get some sushi. So go to golden for some Halu sushi!(and Mr.Sushi) :)

Great sushi, excellent prices, quick service. The rice could be a little less sticky, but the fish is alway fresh tasting and well prepared. Their takeout is always ready when they say it will be, very convenient.

Decent sushi. We had the Gyozas and they were very good! Also had some hot sake which wasn't our favorite, but everything was priced well and we enjoyed our experience. They give you hot towels at the beginning of the meal for your hands, that was pretty cool as well. Definitely made the experience more enjoyable. I would recommend it.

Hubs and I went to Halu on Tuesday December 28th 2010 for dinner. Time was about 18:05hrs ish. We were greeted, seated next to a fish tank on the left wing of the establishment. The waitstaff gave us the menu. Man this place is "sizzling" with patrons alike. Is this a good sign? Perhaps so if you are a regular. Okies here is why for me personally the establishment receive 3 stars. Hubs order the Curry Chicken. His dish comes with Miso Soup and Rice. He requested the BROWN Rice for his meal but when his order arrived, the waitstaff gave him White Rice instead. I ask Hubs why he does not want to flag the waitstaff and ask for the Brown Rice instead. Since there are only 2 waitstaffs running around, and the place was slightly full, he decide not to "hassle" the waitstaff. Next, comes to my order. I ordered the Seafood Pancake. Its OK, nothing spectacular or fancy. It comes with the soy dipping sauce of somekind. Hubs thought this Seafood Pancake is under season for his taste bud. I also ordered the Golden Mussels. This dish also gets the 3 star rating from me coz, something was missing, the "WOW" factor from my tastebud. Furthermore, they put something in the dish, that I dont fancy and until today, I cant figure out what was it. We also ordered the Crab Ragoon. Then came my order for SUSHI or my NIGIRIS Favorites. Unfortunately, they were OUT of Amaebi and Uni. This made me err, slightly sad. But I went ahead to order : * Surf Clam * Unagi * Spicy Tako * Scallop Kaibashira All in all the nigiris I ordered and ate was OK. Perhaps I might return if we are in the neighborhood, and perhaps might call them in advance so I wont be "short-handed" and leaving without eating AMAEBI and UNI. Who knows, I might also venture out to their sister restaurant in Littleton, perhaps... Halu Sushi you definitely have room for improvement in my books.

Ordered (2) rolls from their sushi menu. The salmon roll was on the small side, but delicious. Also ordered the Cajun roll which was good. It's your basic neighborhood sushi place, decent pricing, and open till 10pm. There aren't a whole lot of other options in Golden. Overall, it was OK.

It was...ok. We went for our anniversary, rather than drive all the way to our favorite place. Should have driven. :-\ A $100 dinner, but nothing was amazing...just...ok.

5 stars to Halu for their consistently good sushi. Since my last review, the owner and I have built a bit of a rapport with my frequent take-outs and dine-ins mainly because he takes the initiative to get to know you and show his appreciation. That goes a looooong way with me in a world full of crappy businesses that could care less about the customer anymore. The sushi is always good, maybe not like the more lavish/exotic dishes in more upscale sushi establishments, but that's also not what they're going for. We're always happy to see Marvin and his crew and always get a great meal with every visit.

I've been eating here for years, as well as the owner's first sushi place, Mr. Sushi, in Littleton. Food is excellent and reasonably priced, with portions more generous than I get at other sushi places. The unagi dumbori is my favorite. Owner is friendly and attentive, and he is almost always working the floor to ensure the diners have a great experience.

Went there this evening and it was delicious! I had the sashimi platter plus nigiri of scallops, white tuna and spicy octopus (SO good, had never seen that before) and some veggie hand rolls. Started with the seaford soup that had shrimp, scallop and white fish (another unique feature to this restaurant).I have celiac disease and they were very accomodating! Mom got the shrimp and vegetables dish which she enjoyed more so than any other sushi place she's visited (she's not a sushi person!). Overall...great place and great prices! We had coupons too so for all of that we only walked out spending around $70 and a free roll. Staff were very friendly. Great experience, my new fav in Golden.

Halu Sushi for the "Gold"....en! For whatever reason you find yourself in Golden, CO be sure to dine in at Halu Sushi. The waitstaff is small (tip: be a little patient on the busier nights), prompt, polite, and knowledgeable. I love a waitstaff that knows their stuff; it speaks loads of the establishment. The place is smartly decorated (good placement of tables to allow for some dining privacy) for being on the smaller end in size. The sushi presentation always comes out clean, neat, and tasty; as it should be. I feel that the prices are reasonable considering it's location and proximity to Denver. I recommend trying the roll with a combination of salmon and mango. Hello taste buds! All in all, I know I can always depend on Halu, consistency is always key!

  • Cameron H.

A good choice if you're in the area, but not your only option. The sushi here is fresh, although there is too much emphasis on fried rolls and heavy sauces. The prices are also probably a bit higher than you are accustom to for a small sushi place, but that's to be expected. I wish the service was a little more attentive and that there was an all-you-can-eat type of option.

When I moved from Washington State to Golden I figured I'd have to give up sushi. Luckily I found Halu and that was not the case. Inexpensive, creative, and delicious, with friendly service as well. My friends and I would come here as a group of six or more every month and just stuff our faces with elaborate rolls, and pay $25 each after tax and tip. Sushi Hai in Denver would be more like $60. Yeah it's in an old Wendy's building. Who cares!

  • Jeff P.

The best you're going to do in the immediate area. As an Asian Bistro, 3.5/5 As a Sushi Restaurant 2/5 Don't get the Spicy Tuna Roll under any circumstance. If my rating was based solely on this roll it would be negative starts. My wife and I unfortunately ordered two since it is usually one of the safer choices on a sushi menu you're not familiar with, we each had two or three pieces, then moved on to our other items, when we were done there was nothing a a plate full of Spicy Tuna Roll pieces and there was no way either one of us wanted to have another bite. The sweet n' sour soup was excellent. The Spicy Pink Lady roll was very good, should have had extra of those instead. We almost always order a few pieces of salmon sashimi, and the salmon was fresh with great texture and flavor. Very good values on the drink menu. If it's late and you don't feel like driving any further, you won't do any better. If you have the time and its early, venture closer to Denver or Boulder, you'll pay much more but probably have a better experience. Would only go back if we had a insatiable sushi craving at 9pm when visiting my parents in Arvada and didn't have time to drive elsewhere.

We've been here a few times for lunch. The service is extremely friendly and quick- you get greeted by everyone in the place, all the sushi chefs, etc. They have a lunch special where you can get a few pieces of nigiri, a sushi roll or two, and tempura for around $10. It's a great deal and pretty tasty, too! Not as good Sushi Uokura, but pretty good!

For being one of Golden's only sushi restaurant, this place certainly isn't bad. However, as it's only 20 minutes away from arguably some of the best sushi in the state, it's also kind of "meh" at the same time. Our experiences dining in have found that it always takes a really long time for service unless you sit at the sushi bar. OR as I learned today, if you order take out. It took 15 minutes for them to make an entree and 3 sushi rolls, two of which required frying. Maybe the trick is to go for takeout. My husband really likes their orange chicken, and he liked it again today. They also gave him what seemed like a double portion- another good thing about takeout it seems. The sushi rolls however were kind of neither here nor there. The spider roll just didn't taste right to me- I think it's because they add krab in the roll in addition to the whole soft shell crab, which is a little funny. The vegetable tempura roll was actually really good- I'd definitely get it again. I also got a rainbow roll because I really wanted some sashimi and I just picked it off the top since it was so much cheaper to just order a roll. It was very yummy, but very thick. Lots of rice! Which isn't necessarily bad, just different. However, the spider roll but a bad taste in my mouth so I was just put off going into the rainbow roll and a little skeptical about it. I''m certainly not against this place, and the prices for their rolls are very reasonable. However, I ended up throwing sushi away, which I never do. If you live in the area, they send out coupons twice a month, so look for them! $6 a $30 order or a free california roll for an order of more than $25. OH- and FYI. They changed their name from Haru to Halu because there is a chain of apparently high end Japanese restaurants called Haru on the East Coast. Since "r" and "l" are indistinguishable in the Japanese language, it was a logical switch.

Neat restaurant for Golden. Clean and cozy place. The taste is solid. The price is good. My wife and I went to this place for a lunch in April. We had some sushi and noodles. The taste is good, not fancy. It costs less than $40. We are full. It is recommended for people wanna sushi at Golden.

  • Scott B.

You know you're at a pretty good restaurant when you start picking nits. And after about a half hour at Haru that's what I was doing. My first nit was that the sushi had a little bit too much rice in each bite. A little later I added a second. I'm not sure the crab in the California roll was actually crab (and not krab). I'm not saying, I'm just saying. The good news is, aside from those two complaints, everything was much better than my wife and I expected from a sushi restaurant in Golden, CO. The salmon in particular was exquisite. Sushi fans in Golden should give it a shot. Probably not worth a drive from anywhere else because it's not head and shoulders above any of the Denver or Boulder places in terms of quality or price.

I have had sushi in so many places including Alaska and California. However, I have never had sushi as good as Halu Sushi! The fish is always so fresh and the customer service is wonderful! The owner, Marvin, is often on hand to welcome you and makes sure everything is perfect for you! Some of the favorites I have tried include the Heart Attack, The School of Mines and the white tuna! Everything I have had there has always been very tasty! Oh, and as a starter, I would strongly recommend the seafood salad! So yummy!

The sushi was great here. The house roll was really good with eel and salmon. I also enjoyed the amigo roll with jalapeno, cream cheese and spicy tuna. The prices are very reasonable. I would go here again next time I am in Golden.

This is the sister restaurant to Mr. Sushi, with the same good quality sushi here. The hot Saki was not so good. We had an Amigo Roll which is kind of like a Japanese version of a jalapeno popper, not very hot, but very tasty.

I think Halu sushi is terrific. The best points are the quality of the fish, and the service. The management and servers give Halu such a nice ambiance. They are so welcoming. The servers are attentive but not overwhelming. One area for improvement I'd love to see are more specials, or seasonal dishes that change. Regarding the name change - I heard they changed it from haru to halu cause of another famous Japanese restaurant with the name haru threatened legal action. Which is funny cause in Japanese haru just means "spring" and the sound of the second syllable is kind of in between an L and an R, but typically written in romanji as an R, while L's are not typically used. I don't care either way - always great sushi!

We used to have sushi on a weekly basis when we lived in downtown Denver and have been hesitant to try the two places in Golden - especially Haru given that it's in an old Wendy's or Hardy's. But as my mother always said - you can't judge a book by it's cover and in this case she was right. We have a little one at home so instead of trying to do dinner out we did takeout from Haru last night. I have to say, the sushi was excellent - fresh and absolutely as good as our favorite places in Denver. The rolls also were wonderful. We tried the Aspen roll and Golden roll. If you're craving sushi and you're in Golden then I highly recommend hitting Haru.

My new favorite sushi place. Standing outside this converted Wendy's you'll have a hard time believing the wonderful ambience inside! I've eaten here three times, twice to go and once dine-in. I must say that the dine-in experience was kind of slow, but the sushi is wonderful, the place is cozy, and the staff is really nice.

The service can be a little slow at times, depending on which waitress you get, but the sashimi is always fresh and the sesame chicken is better than most other places. Definitely worth giving it a shot.

Its nice to have good sushi closer into Golden. I went with my girlfriend and we had a great experience. The sushi was some of the best I've had and the service was very helpful and friendly. The only problem I had was that both of the times that I have been there, they ran out of deserts. Other than that, its been perfect.

Perhaps it was because I went during their grand opening and they hadn't worked out the kinks yet, but I was not impressed. The service was professional and friendly, but the food just kind of dropped off. I couldn't finish mine. And yes I love sushi. And no I don't usually have a hard time finishing my dinner.

This, my friends, is a tale of two restaurants. It is a tale of yesteryear, or more accurately, yesterday... To be fair, I had just gotten done with an exceptionally long work day where I had zero time to grab food, so when it came time to go out and grab something to eat, I was excited. The plan, from my lovely GF, was sushi. This meant one of two things. Either make the drive from Golden to Cherry Creek to have Kona, or grab food at Haru right there in Golden. I lived in California for three years. I was surrounded by darn good sushi choices, several of them available to me 24 hours a day. Since returning to Colorado Kona was the only really good sushi I've found...reminds me I owe them a review. So, last night, being exhausted, we decided we'd stay in Golden. We had made a trip to Haru before, and while I had not been overwhelmed, I had survived the experience. Tonight though, would a tragedy to change my mind forever. We take a seat in this lovely Wendy's-style restaurant and order two bowls of Egg Drop Soup. I'm giving them a star based just on that soup. It's good...and it's the only thing they can serve you if time is short. Then, we order sushi. Two rolls. That's it. Two crummy rolls. Then we wait. The people next to us, who had arrived before us, get their food. Then the people behind us, who arrived after us, start to get their sushi. We wait some more. I watch the manager just continue to seat people, and I watch the sushi chefs just keep serving the people at the sushi bar. When we arrived the sushi bar was empty, and I don't really like sitting at them, so we took a table, completely unaware that unless you decided to sit right there next to the sushi chef you had absolutely no prayer in actually getting your food. Finally, after forty minutes of waiting for my food...I went to the front counter. The manager asked what I needed. I asked for my bill for the two bowls of soup, since I'd been waiting forty minutes for my sushi. He asked where I was sitting. I said, "It's been forty minutes since we ordered food. That's unacceptable, and way too long to wait. Just give me the bill so I can leave." He "graciously" offers to pay for the soup. So I'm getting ready to leave when he says, "We'll see you next time!" It was all cheery-like, as if he had absolutely no clue that not only wouldn't I ever be back, but that it was my intention to tell the world how completely sub-par the service is there. The last time I was there, the service was every bit as miserable, but my food was edible... If you have three hours to waste on a quick dinner, I recommend that you go ahead and try Haru... Wait, no, I don't. If you have three hours to waste on dinner, you have time to drive to Kona. (This is continued in part two, where we review the place I actually got food last night.)

Neat and tasty Sushi, but watch what you wear to dinner. Halu is located right off the main drag and is very easy to find. Inside, the restaurant is tastefully appointed with a cube-shaped saltwater fish tank serving as the focal point of the upper part of the dining room. On my lunch there, I had some delicious egg-drop soup - which also featured some vegetables, which was an interesting change - as well as some Yakisoba which were wonderfully prepared and cooked to perfection. The only part of the dining experience (which was definitely made better by attentive servers) is that the layout of the dining room could be improved. The dining room is two-levels, with the top level which includes the bar being a few steps higher than the lower level which faces the road. The potential problem for anyone being seated at the top level is that your table is eye-level with the people on the lower level. Ergo, it may be best to wear a long skirt or pants, ladies, less you care to provide a show for the diners on the lower level

Yep, "A-OK" sums it up just fine. I live down the street from Halu and it's my take-myself-out-on-a-date destination. Rainbow roll, edamame and glass of Pinot Grigio, every time. My total usually comes to somewhere around $22, I believe. Even during busy hours, you'll see people wearing anything from date-night-worthy wear to sweatpants (namely, me). Some people hate on Halu based only on the fact that its building used to be a Wendy's or a Pizza Hut or something, but once you pry open the oyster, you'll find the pearl inside. Oh, and the owner is incredibly nice and helpful.

Tasty rolls, fresher than is to be expected in Colorado, priced right, good portion sizes, convenient location to westside suburbs and mountain communities, good scene but also family friendly. Since moving from coastal California, where you get spoiled with ultra-fresh sushi, we've been struggling to find even decent sushi close to us in Evergreen. Obviously there's good stuff in downtown Denver, but this is not only the first good sushi we've found outside downtown, its also very close. Their portion sizes and prices are just right (nothing over $12), service is friendly and attentive. You're not going to be blown away by the ambience, but, considering its a converted Wendy's, they've done an excellent job. There's usually a pretty good buzz in the place though its also been very family friendly, too (we bring our 2-year old and people have been cool).

Service: 4 stars (out of 5) Food: 4 stars Price: 5 stars (great value for good food!) Atmosphere: 4 stars The placement of this place on Yelp's map is a bit off: it's a bit farther north on Golden Rd. where it becomes Ford St. We stumbled upon Halu Sushi completely by accident on the way back from a long day of snowboarding. We were seated immediately and quickly brought piping hot cups of Genmaicha (a green tea infused with toasted brown rice, very yummy!) which appeared to be their house tea. I asked our server if he had any favorites. One of his recommendations that we tried was the Spicy Pink Lady roll. It was quite good: three kinds of seasonal fish, avocado, and some cayenne or chili powder sprinkled over the rice. I also enjoyed the eel and cucumber roll. My wife and I each ordered entrees, hers a pretty standard vegetable and tofu stir fry, mine a pretty standard chicken and vegetable stir fry. They came in a pretty standard brown sauce which was tasty. It was nice to see that they offered these dishes steamed, with the sauce on the side. They also offered the choice of white or brown rice. I personally prefer the brown, so I appreciated that. Our bill for dinner for three was only $43.90, which seems pretty good for decent food around here. We'll definitely be going back. Oh, and the decor was very nice. We didn't even notice that it was a remodeled fast food restaurant until we left and found ourselves leaving the parking lot via what must have been a drive thru lane.

Halu Sushi is conveniently in the neighborhood where I work, so I just ran in for a quick take-out lunch. When I called in my order for Mongolian Chicken, I was given the choice between white rice and brown rice. I opted for no rice (this is me, cutting carbs) and expected my styrofoam carry-out container to have a void where the rice should have been. Not the case! The container was full to the brim of deliciously spicy, white meat Mongolian Chicken! Now I have lunch for tomorrow as well! Oh, and it also came with an egg roll and a big serving of miso soup! All this for $7.50. Nice! I'll be back!

Seated promptly to a booth in the early evening. Jeez it was freezing!!! I was rocking back and forth trying to stay warm. Then I order an iced tea and not a hot tea, what was I thinking? The iced tea I believe was Nestea, I really expect freshly brewed tea in Asian restaurants. All soups but miso had meat so I decided to skip the soup and stick with sashimi and sushi. I ordered the tuna sashimi, 5 pieces, and the Pink Lady, a combination of raw fish rolled in rice. The sashimi was good, not the best but acceptable. The Pink Lady had mayo in it, something it really can do without. I don't understand why so many rolls are coming in mayo in them all of a sudden. I remember when it was a sauce on top now it's in the roll. Not my thing at all. So I ate a few pieces of it and picked the fish out the rest. My husband ordered the veggie tempura and the crunchy california roll. I liked both of his rolls better than my roll, though both came with a slightly sweet sauce on top. I don't know what the crunch was on the California, maybe panko crumbs. But the crab was tasty. The service is better here than some others I've been to in Golden. I may stick with the vegetarian rolls and sashimi at this one.

When I try a new place in an unfamiliar area I try to go in with realistic expectations of location and the typical clientele. At Halu I expected to have mediocre sushi because of CO being landlocked. I also thought that the menu would cater to the population of the area. The sushi was better than expected and although we ordered mostly rolls with cooked ingredients the shiro maguro nigiri I ordered was okay. The menu did cater to the population of Golden. The menu has Chinese menu options and even has Pad Thai. I would guess it would be to help make menu options more familiar to some. If in Golden I would go back to this place. I wouldn't expect it to be as good as my favorite places in the Bay Area but for what it is and where it is it is good.

this place rocks. for real. tonight i'm having my boyfriends birthday dinner there. i have tried denver sushi many times and it's ok and expensive .this joint is niether, it is awesome and cheapish. once you get over the fact that it looks like a wendy's on the outside (it totally used to be one) you will step inside to be plesently suprised by how cute it is! the bathroom is super cool. the boyfriend hates sushi in general and still picked this place cause the non-raw food is also vedy vedy good. go. i dare you. get out of denver.

Yeah! A new sushi place in Golden. The sushi is quite good and the miso soup is only $1. The rolls and sushi are great and very inexpensive. The seaweed salad is good, too. The other dishes (they aren't all Japanese) aren't nearly as good, and some are expensive. So I'd only go if you are going for the sushi. The service is super friendly, but not super high speed--so go when you have some time. The atmosphere/ decor is amazingly nice, especially since it's in an old Wendy's building! They seem fine with kids, too.

  • Irwin M.

  • Jordan A.

This place is great! Good service, great food, and really quick in and out for lunch. The lunch specials are awesome too! With your typical Kung pow chicken, which was phenomenal, you also get a small California roll, soup, and an egg roll with sweet-and-sour sauce. I can't say enough about their amigo roll! Cream cheese, crabmeat, and jalapeno!

Nothing super special, but good just the same. Decent sushi and sesame chicken was good as well. Rice was a little too sticky, which threw off the texture of the rolls a little. Tobiko and Masago were both good. The menu could be a little larger. Service was good and was fast. I'll go back sometime.

Sushi was ok. It was the rest of the dinner. Lacking simple thing as salad dressing they did not have but served lettuce. I will never understand a restaurant not having product. I will NOT be back!

We've eaten here a number of times and have always had a good experience. It's a very pleasant restaurant which might be surprising if you only look from the outside as it was originally built as a Wendy's on South Golden Road. Nonetheless, the decor is clean and tasteful and a well maintained salt water aquarium is always a plus. Staff aren't effusive but are extremely professional and polite. The green tea is great - "smoky" and bottomless. The miso soup is delicious - I find a lot of miso to be bland and under-seasoned, but not this miso. I've always had the Chirashi - chef's choice sushi-grade fish served over rice. It has always included salmon, ahi, unagi, salmon roe and a couple of other fish. Sushi is clearly the name of the game at Halu, but there are a number of "Pan-Asian" entrees on the menu for those that aren't piscivores (although I can't understand why anyone wouldn't order sushi). Surprisingly perhaps, Golden has two very respectable sushi restaurants - Halu Sushi and Sushi Uokura. How do they compare? The ambiance is very different but the food, value and overall experience is really a toss-up. Great to have two excellent options in Golden.

Who cares!

So yummy!

Always fresh and delicious. This is the sushi joint we always go to; its close and we have never been dissatisfied with the food or the service :) the price is about the same as any other sushi place; its not too expensive but not cheap sushi either., meaning its not "fishy" smelling or tasting like cheap-o sushi usually is.

This place is gross. We stopped here on the way back from the continental divide to Boulder. It's the only sushi restaurant in Golden and the reviews looked ok. The fish did not look fresh. I got the yakisoba, and it was greasy and somewhat like a bad lo mein. The service was a little brusque and the atmosphere of the place was that of a cheap fast food restaurant.

  • Valerie M.

This is the sister restaurant to Mr. Sushi, with the same good quality sushi here. The hot Saki was not so good. We had an Amigo Roll which is kind of like a Japanese version of a jalapeno popper, not very hot, but very tasty.

  • Whitney M.
