Our friends from Kentucky are in town. When they lived in Denver this was there favorite Mexican place. We had not been since they left......WHY?!!! The service was super friendly. It was Friday night so packed. The host took our cell number and recommended getting a beer next door and they would text us. We opted just to enjoy the nice seating and open area in between the brewery and the restaurant. Our waiter was fun, quick, and good. I had a great house margarita. Food was great. I went for one of my favorites to see how it compared to other places - Mexican Hamburger smothered in green chile. It was perfect. Chile had a nice bite, but not too hot where it was not enjoyable. Even though they were busy, busy, we were not made to feel rushed. 16yrs will not go by again. They are moving to the corner soon, and I hope they put in a nice outdoor waiting area like they have mid block.

The atmosphere is a little divey, so it's not somewhere for a date, but the food is great! There's plenty of it, too... I showed up hungry, ordered the super nachos and a burrito plate (two burritos). The nachos were topped with ground beef, diced jalapenos (not pickled), guacamole, and lots of cheese (not cheese sauce). I wound up taking half of my entree home for later. Our sever was good, too. He kept our drinks full and made sure that we weren't waiting too long for food, but also kept the classes from coming out right on top of each other. Great place, especially for the price.

Went here on a Friday afternoon and left with a serious food baby. The waiter recommended the adovado: pork marinated in peppers for 48 hours. My boyfriend ordered the adovado burrito with green chilli and thought it was great. I got the chilli relleno, and ate more than I'd originally anticipated. I really recommend the green chilli if you can handle the hot spices. The kitchen is right in the front by the dining area which gives the restaurant real authenticity. Our waiter was great in helping us decide what to order and kept our waters and chips topped off. Great food; great service.

I have driven by this place for years and never eaten there. Finally, based on reviews I thought I would give it a try. Starting with the chips and salsa I would have to say good...but not great. The salsa was a little too spicy for me since I am a wimp when it comes to spices. However, when my shredded beef burrito came my opinion quickly shot up. My burrito was perfect. I would go as far as saying for my taste it is one of the best burritos I have ever had.

There've been a lot of mixed reviews as of late regarding this staple in Englewood so I took the opportunity to dine here last night and see about the hub-bub. El Tepehuan has been in Englewood almost 40 years and is getting ready for a big move to a new location just a few doors south. In an effort to prepare the added new management and are preparing for a name change to El Tep. We slipped in a little early for dinner before a show last night and grabbed a table and some house margaritas. The quality, taste and price were right on. The chips and salsa arrived before we had even ordered a drink and the salsa is warm for sure. We had one who couldn't eat it at all as it was too hot. Monday nights are Bob Burrito Night which is one of their local faves. Our table had fajitas, the Bob burrito and the chili relleno. Everyone loved the food. Looking forward to going back when they open the new location.

Chili Rellenos were on the menu for me tonight while my dining companions enjoyed Fajitas and the Bob Burrito (apparently a specialty). Everyone's meal was excellent as were the chips & salsa, and house margaritas. The salsa was deceptively spicy and the margaritas deceptively strong. Both are reasons I'll be back. The dining room filled up quickly and the restaurant is apparently moving locations soon, which I'm sure the staff is looking forward too. I can see the place being tough to navigate when the dining room is full.

From the chips y salsa, to the margarita, to the Bob Burrito, this place is authentic Mexican Food at its finest. Open kitchen/dining room feel, great service and amazing food. A true winner!

It's good. Chips and salsa are great. For some reason the taco/tostada shells always seem stale. Other than that, solid.

Love, love, love the shredded beef Chimis and the Bob Burrito! Customer for the past 15 years and the Tep never disappoints.

    (5)
  • Koby H.

I got Bob's Burrito because I've been told it's their specialty and it didn't disappoint. The chips were good, the salsa was nice and spicy, and the staff was pretty generous with dishing out free refills of both. If I'm in the area and looking for a good beef burrito, I know where I'll go.

Just for the record, 2 stars means "I've experienced better". Which I certainly have. It does not mean that I hated the place. It is a normal neighborhood mexican, maybe a little saltier than usual. At my recent visit the waiters and waitresses were certainly friendly and fast, but the food was not particularly good. The Carnitas were okay, maybe a little greasy and not tender enough but fine. My kid had a bean burrito with a side of rice&beans and he complained that the beans were too salty for him. Indeed I was up a few times this night guzzling water because of this. With an adult meal, a kid meal, a soda, house margarita and a beer we ended up spending around $40. As far as Yelp is concerned it would be between the "$" and the "$$".

  • Frank C.

Comfortable Mexican food. Always get the Bob-Burrito and it never disappoints. They have a lot of parking in the back and you can enter in the back door. The staff as always been nice. If you are looking for some good "home style" Mexican in the area this is one of the best places.

I have eaten here for years but very recently the amount and quality of food as really declined but prices increased. Breakfast burritos used to be huge but are dwindling down. Mexican hamburgers are still good but not like before and yes they do charge proudly. Unfortunately my visits here now have just about stopped.

Excellent service and one fabulous meal and one really bad meal. Bob's burrito plate was fantastic! The shredded beef and fresh avocados were heavenly. Good coffee! Now for the bad. The tamales were dense and tasteless even with sauce. The chicken taco was not good. The meat tasted old and tough. I will never get anything with chicken there. French toast looked great on another table.

  • Amanda L.

They finally started included chips and salsa for free! So to be fair I've come back to give the final star. They are moving locations soon which I think will help with organization and decor (hopefully). Their food has greatly improved already. I LOVE this place.

Under the influence of an overdose of Primo Cisneros, I was pulled into partake in Colorado's second-best rolled commodity - burritos! El Tepehuan's are the smothered wet burritos, not SF Mission style. Wet Ones are not my normal cup of tea, but still a tremendous choice. Other Yelper's recommend the Bob Burrito, so naturally I followed the Elite's lead and got a Bob. It was stuffed full of tender, lean, flavorful beef (I think the menu said ground beef though). Good balance of other essentials in the stuffing. The ranchero sauce is not out of a 55 gallon drum from a Wisconsin Sysco factory. Definitely made on premises - nice thick viscosity with a little kick. Too often wet burritos are coated in bland, salty watered down tomato paste. Not here. I think I had to pay the for chips, But you know what they say about this stuff effecting your memory. Being I'm sensing a subconscious anger about paid chips & salsa, I think they were FOC. I do have a vivid memory of the salsa - it was hot! And I'm a 5 out of 5 stars kinda guy. Memorable, fer shur. Chips were outstanding. Other menu items looked equally delectable. Service was lightning-fast. Parking easy. Prices reasonable. No excuses to not frequently visit.

We've been coming here for over thirty years and it has always been a favorite for family and friends. Unfortunately, our recent experiences have not been as consistent as so many years in the past. New wait staff, new cooks and new 'take it or leave it' attitude. This weekend was our 4th or 5th visit since the new management took over and each time our experiences have gotten progressively worse. At first, we thought it was a learning curve but it is obvious that this iconic restaurant is heading in an entirely different direction. In an attempt to market to a new crowd (I guess), the once friendly, harmonious atmosphere is now an agonizing long wait for your food while, meanwhile, you get to watch the new, mostly non-Hispanic wait staff bark at the cooks! The food is still pretty decent, not consistent but decent, (hence the two stars), but the rest of the experience has really been unpleasant. If the original owners are still in the loop, I truly wish them the best for the future, but if El Tepehuan is gradually changing hands and changing direction, I'm afraid we will no longer be along for the ride. It's old but I can't think of a more appropriate adage - "why fix it if it ain't broke."

Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant! Great shredded chicken, huge portions, and the sopapillas are the best! Waitstaff very friendly too.

  • Abby S.

Our "go to" place for Mexican food. The salsa is hot, the food is fast and fresh, and the staff is friendly! Need a recommendation? We get the BOB burrito every time. Mmmm! Now my mouth is watering...

  • Carey B.

This place is awesome! Found it on Yelp and wandered in solo. I tried the House Special, which was truly too much food, but I tried like hell to fit every last bite in! If you're looking for great Mexican food in the Denver area, definitely make a stop here! I only wish I lived closer for take-out!!!

I have been here three times and decided to finally write my review. The place is small. The place is old. The parking is not great. The Chips & Salsa are really good. The service is good one day and bad the next. My friends love this place. For me, it is 2 stars at best. For my friends, 4 of them all think it is at least 4 stars. I'll give it 3, only for the Chips & Salsa and for their smiles.

Tepehuan catered a corporate event for me recently. To the good: the food! Fresh, not too greasy, great green chili. To the bad: we ate too much and drank beer and then nobody really wanted to do any work.

    (5)
  • Jeanette S.

Had cheese enchiladas, they were fair. The sauce was just tomato w/chili powder! Mole was "very" dry & shredded. No mole sauce at all! Over all REVIEW...Very pricey for what you get!

  • Betty S.

    Traditional chili rellanos are yummy!

  • J B.

El Tep has the best authentic Mexican food around, hands down. We always make sure to order take home pints of their refried beans, green chili and salsa. Phenomenal!

  • Aimee L.

I love this restaurant! We go there at least once a week as we work nearby. The Mexican food is so good. I've had everything from enchiladas, burritos, tacos, Chile Relleno's & tamales! All of it is delish! The service is always fast and efficient. Sometimes during busy lunch hours there is a wait but it usually moves pretty quick. I would highly recommend them anytime.

Stopped by here after running errands @ 11am on 12/23... right before Xmas. This place was poppin off! People already sitting at tables scarfing down burritos and whatnot. In the back corner a dude was playing some harp looking thing. It was amazing! From the moment I walked in the door I felt like I belonged here... This was divine. I only wanted a burrito to go so the kind host pointed me to the back of the restaurant where I could place my order with the cashier. Both ladies were very nice and helpful as I bet they could tell this was my first time. I ordered the chile relleno burrito smothered in green chili, w/ rice and lettuce, tomato and sat down. As I sat waiting near the dude with the harp a smily faced server stopped by and asked if I needed anything. I politely declined and told him I was waiting for a togo order, then he offered me a water and I declined again. What great service and awesome vibe! Furthermore, "Merry Christmas" was on everyone's lips. The burrito: At first, I was concerned about the burrito not being spicy enough but I was wrong! It had the perfect amount of kick and everything was in exquisite balance. This was a big meal too. For only $8 including tax and tip this was the best deal around. I hate to give away my secret spots, but this group deserves great success. Go here! You won't be disappointed.

I've been enjoying the breakfast burritos here... Tasty, and 2 bucks! Despite our previous issue this is the best mexican restaurant in Englewood around Broadway.

  • Deborah B.

I love this place! The service is always fantastic and the food is always consistent. A true local gem. We come here nearly every weekend to enjoy tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner. Can't be beat....definitely get the chips and salsa!

I have been a long time fan of this place. Tacos carne asada are my favorite in Denver, but there are a lot of great options. At lunch, this place is packed and they somehow manage to get people in and out quickly. Staff work their tails off and always get your refills before you have to ask. A bit of a strange setup with the cashier sitting behind a counter at the end of the room away from everything else - I prefer to pay my server, rather than take a ticket to the cashier.

  • Karen B.

Nice. I had the Chili Relleno (very tasty, crisply fried style), and my husband had the Bob's Burrito. He was pleased as well. Casual family atmosphere, always full but service was neither slow nor absent. Manager obviously had the restaurant in control and stopped by our table to see that we were happy. We were. Will definitely be back.

Fabulous food from this classic home in the wall. Order the camarones del Diablo. Don't order the taco salad. Excellent salsa, great home made chips and guacamole. But seriously, stay away from the taco salad. I love the El negro, which is chorizo and cheese... it's hot and delicious. But whatever you do, don't order the taco salad... it literally looks like a taco bowl full of baby shit.

I have been going here for about 15 years now. The food is amazing and the staff there are top notch! It's hard to pick one favorite item there since I have so many, but I would have to say the Mexican Revolution for breakfast is my favorite thing. I started taking my wife there about 4 years ago when we met and she loves going there now. My 6 year daughter who is a taco nut always asks to go there too. Both my wife and daughter have told me they also like going there because the owner is handsome and both have a small crush on him, which I don't blame them I do too! I have sent many people and clients there and they all reported back that it was amazing!! I just found out about their new location and menu items that I can't wait to be one of the first ones in the new place once it opens to have a beer and devour some of the new dessert nachos!!

I've been coming to Tepe since 1980 and lived with few changes that have occurred since then, like in the early 90's they changed the cheese; in that same era the got new tables and chairs; the ceiling fans were a great upgrade; most recently they went to blending up the salsa. I was fine with those changes because the food remained the same. But alas, no more. There is a new name "El Tep" and a new staff, most of the people I have been seeing for years were not there. Replaced with, I hate to say it, white people. What does some white guy in his Hawaiian shirt know about Mexican food? Other changes I noticed were a drop in the quality of ingredients the meat in the tacos al carbon tasted cheap and frozen; the salsa had a horrible vinegary taste that only comes from salsa on the verge of turning, vinegar, cheap tomato product, or a combo of all. For the first time in over 30 years my lettuce salad was browning around the edges and my guacamole had the brown haze of guacamole made yesterday and, or left out without being covered up. The French toast was no longer Texas toast, but a cheap white bread with the crusts cut off, which squishes the edges and make for a gummy bite. But the one Change of which I will miss the most is the smell of the place. When I'd come in the back it would smell of a comforting combo of pine sol and of beans cooking on the stove. The smell that took me right back to my mama's kitchen in El Paso when I was young. Let me tell you, if the smell coming out of the kitchen is different, so is the food. As a long time customer I wish the family that used to run Tepe the best. They brought Denver an excellent restaurant for many years, hats off to them. But with the new crew coming in, I must too must bow out. It was a good ride; a delicious one in fact. As for the new management, I must tell them, regulars never called it "El Tep". And there was no noticeable improvement in the service, which was fine to begin with. But now hipsters will flock to "El Tep" for "Marg Monday" or "Fajita Friday", and they'll never know what they have already missed. How sad.

Had a great time. The service here is finally getting to be great and on point. Our server was this guy on Sunday night who was personal and fun. The food was very good as usual, good green chili. Reminds me a lot like the Denver Broncos green chili. The experience all together was great. Just happy our server took better of us then the people that have waited on us there recently. Food was hot and fast! Loved my burrito!!! We will be back. Chili rellenos are awesome here. Check this place out, but hopefully our server waits on you he's hilarious!!!

You wouldn't think it was terrific Mexican from the outside, but if you're looking for fantastic flavors, this restaurant is one I would recommend! Definitely don't judge a book by its cover on this one

  • N B.

This place used to be my favorite. I was in a couple of days ago and my mind has since changed. There is a whole new wait staff. New cooks, and a " new management team." I was unimpressed with the changes they have made. The Mexican Revolution tasted different. The appetizer "la negra" I ordered came out burned. Although the waitress was apologetic and took the app off the bill. There was also a note posted that they are moving locations. Too many changes at once for me. Not sure I will ever be back.

Now THiS place rocks. The unassuming front door adds to the cool atmosphere. The chicken mole is full of flavor.

We have lived in Englewood for 30+ years and always say how lucky we are to have such an outstanding Mexican restaurant in our community. When friends and family come to CO they always request at least one trip to El Tepehuan. Has always been our go to spot when we are craving Mexican. Very fresh, good sized servings, excellent green chili and to die for blue margaritas. We had El Tep cater our Christmas gathering last year and they did a wonderful job. They have added desserts to their menu and can I just say......WOW! Nothing better than a family owned restaurant where they take pride in their products and service. Looking forward to enjoying all of this in their new setting this summer!

An old reliable Mexican joint that has been on South Broadway forever, it seems. It had been a while since I have been there and the GF and I stopped there while visiting a relative at Swedish. It was rocking busy for a Monday lunch hour with a swamped waitress and a waiter. I had the carne adovada and loved the spices but was surprised with the carnita like pork rather than the flattened pork chops style. It was very good, beans and rice mixed in with the green chile made it wonderful, it was only missing white onion. The salsa was nose running hot but good. The ice tea was from the fountain and just OK. The GF was satisfied with the enchiladas. The hand carved chairs are amazing and the open grill adds a touch that has an old fashioned diner feel.

This place is as Mom & Pop as it gets but that's part of the charm. The food is THE BEST! I suggest the "Bob Burrito".

Love this place! Been going there for years. The Bob Burrito or Chicharrón burrito are sooo yummy.

  • Marshall P.

It's really some of the best Mexican food in Denver. It's damn tasty and reasonably priced. My wife and I eat here all the time. I love the rellenos and the fajitas. My wife likes the enchiladas. The chips and salsa are home made and their horchada is very good. I bet we've eaten here 30 times and we have never had a bad experience. Plus, there's an autographed picture of Jake Plummer on the wall.

  • Ryan R.

My wife and I come here at least 3 times a month. It is a great go to spot with delicious food. There are two things I would suggest staying away from.... The water is not filtered and they charge for their chips and salsa. Other than that this place is legit. Their green chili is some of the best I've found in Colorado.

  • Jeanne N.

Favorite Mexican Restaurant! The food is always great and Juan the cook is amazing!! We go just to watch him whip out dish after dish!! We eat there whenever we are on that side of town and look forward to lunch each and every time.

If you are looking for good authentic Mexican food.... This is the place to go. Their Chile Relleno's are second to none in my opinion. The wait staff is always ready to serve you. They have great salsa and green chile. Their prices are very reasonable. Keep up the good work.

  • Clay D.

I give it 2 stars because of price..The food is 3 stars..$14.20- for a carne asada burrito, beef tostada and they charge $1.80- for chips and salsa..Oh and a glass of water..Kind of a rip off for a little dive mom and pop joint..I know a better place down the street!

  • Susan O.

4 ++++ stars for sure. We have been eating at El Tepehuan since before we moved to Denver...a go-to place when we visited. Now that we live here, we try to enjoy this great and fresh food every other month or so. The food is all made to order and so fresh. I am stuck on The Bob burrito and can't get myself to try much else. Hubby always orders the Chimichanga and it's also tasty! Expect prompt and friendly service, endless soda refills and Tecate' in a can. Plenty of parking around the back of the building with a back entrance. Try it... you will not be disappointed!

  • Wil R.

Best burrito smothered in green chili I've ever had. I knew the food was going to be good, they have the best/hottest table salsa in town; no joke, absolutely delicious. Highly suggest to take home a quart.

Definition of a dive but priced like Village Inn for breakfast. I come here often to meetup with family for Sunday breakfast. Good green chile & good service.

We were looking for a quick Mexican restaurant in the Englewood area, and read some reviews on Yelp, and took a try. It was great, from the plastic table cloths, to the mexican music playing over the speakers to the kitchen in the front, it was great. Very affordable, great food, and the salsa and the burrito, had a little kick. We are adding to this to our list of good food, good value. You can also buy a tee shirt. Seems like a family run place.

  • Melissa S.

Amazing mexican food! This is seriously one of the best mexican joints around. I'm, addicted to the Bob Burrito and the delicious salsa. If you haven't been to this scruffy joint, stop in a prepare to be blown away by flavor!

  • Allie R.

Great tacos alcarbon! Wish I could come here more often since its sooo close to my work. But I am usually too busy to stop. Lunch time is very busy so be prepared to wait, but its always fun watching the cooks whip up your meal right infront of you.

El Tepehuan is a family owned Mexican steakhouse. Think: your local American diner that serves up meat loaf and creamy potatoes. Now translate that to your typical Americanized Mexican fare served in a no frills store front on South Broadway. You have two televisions playing at the back, and an old diner bar set up with a grill near the front window. No romantic mood lighting here. You're here to eat, sip a beer or two, and move on. Pay up at the oddly positioned register booth in the back. (Maybe because locals know to come in the back - better parking there) Or wait, your server will settle up at your table if they are not busy. This is not the kinda place you're gonna wanna linger unless your a federal agent scoping out would-be terrorist going into the Army Surplus down the street. But it does offer a filling, decently tasting, Mexican steak dinner at a reasonable price. I think the name is a reference to "wild game" or "meat". They offer several different steak dinners - same cut of meat switched up and decorated differently depending on your mood. And these are semi-tender round steaks, I believe, about a 1/2 inch thick, not the common thin flank steak you get when you order at joints like this. There are several interesting seafood options on the menu as well. But do I want that kind of food here? I'm thinking not. My steak came with a cheese enchilada buried in red sauce (most likely from a can) and heavy doses of cheddar cheese (15 lbs of this from Sam's Club has got to be in their refrigerator because they are giving it out like dinner mints). The steak shows up with its usual amigos - refried beans and some rice. A nice addition of sliced avocado and pico de gallo tops off the presentation. The steak was cooked as requested and tasty. I had to guess where the enchilada was but once I struck at its core and pulled some up through the red sea of saucy goodness, it didn't really disappoint. Mainly, the meal was satisfactory because I was starving, no lunch was on board, and I was ready to eat. And that sums up my review - this is not the place for a Mexican food connoisseur but if you are seriously hunger, low on funds, need something quick, and you are craving steak and a corona. Hit this joint - it will do you right.

The food is good, but the service is awful! She never brought my chips and salsa, she cleared our plates 10-15 mins after we were done and the check took what seemed like hours to come...

  • Brittany H.

My first experience here was a wee bit better than mine today. After being seated, we were immediately forgotten for five minutes. The restaurant wasn't that busy to forget to serve us water and chips and salsa. That was strike one. Then, the disappointment of a margarita: it was basically tequila with red coloring: strike two. Granted that may not be bad for some people, it just didn't hit the spot today. The food, a burrito and a chimichanga, was decent. The green chilly was delicious! But alas, my stomach didn't agree so much upon digestion. Strike three. I think I'll pass on El Tepehuan in the future.

This was the worst dinning experience my wife and I have ever had. After my wife ate half of her fajitas she realized there was not one but two hairs in her food. One which was wrapped around a piece of chicken. She notified the waitress who was extremely rude and accused my wife of putting the hair in there herself. Really!? She then proceeded to argue with my wife about it and was the most disrespectful waitress we have ever had. We will never be back!

  • David T.

I am truly baffled by all of the good reviews. Our experience was pretty much average to awful. True, the place has been around forever apparently cooking pretty bland Mexican for a bunch of blue hairs from Englewood - at least if the customers on the night we were there are an accurate sample of their normal customer base. There certainly were no Latin faces in the crowd - not a good sign. They kind of tout their grilled meats, steaks particularly. So I order one. Medium rare. It arrived well done and tough as a boot. The waitress tried to take it back because she could see it wasn't cooked as ordered. The grill is right in the dining room so we got to watch the fight between the waitress and the cook - not pretty. She ended up bringing it back and said she was sorry but the cook wouldn't re-do it. Knocked a couple of bucks off the check. Sorry, that doesn't cut it. Others in the party had more traditional Mexican and none that reported anything other than pretty bland - ordinary. Certainly no serious heat. You aren't going for the atmosphere, that's for sure - pretty shabby and worn out looking. The only reason for two stars - decent margaritas and chips and salsa. Just so many better choices.

Not great service or atmosphere but the food is good and inexpensive. Had a smothered burrito and it was muy delicioso!!!!

Been eating there since 1983. This is the only restaraunt in Denver that I actually MUST eat at every two weeks or so or I get cranky. Shredded beef is THE BEST I have had. Green chile could cause world peace. Why fight- just eat. Salsa so good your nose may bleed- but in a good way. Same people have been running, cooking and serving this place since forever.

  • Mary Jo S.

These guys have been in business since 1978 and for that I will give them an extra 1/2 star. Even the chairs say that El Tepehuan is here to stay as they have the name carved on the back. New to me since my last visit is their limited liquor license; they serve beer, vodka, and margaritas. However, I did not sample a cocktail as it was the middle of the day and I still had things to do. I like that breakfast is served all day and my huevos over medium were great. The tortillas were hot off the grill and were perfect for sopping up all the green chili and egg yolk. The husband had a combo and said it was tasty, his complaint was the amount of cheese. I on the other hand thought his cheese looked like authentic Tex-Mex. One of my all time favorites is their Mexican steak and it is still on the menu. (This used to pack 'em in at El Tep). Good place to eat when you are in the neighborhood.

The perfect service, the perfect chimichanga's, Great Price!! Love it. Open kitchen, nice and clean place, but could be improved in the atmospehere catagory. Great green chili, Perfect spice amount. They don't ask you how spicy you want it, you get it how it is intended to be. There Guak is hand mashed.. not too salty. Happy hour looked great, we were too late but get there before 6 for some great deals on food and Mexican beer. My dad use to take us here when we were kids. And I have to say, they have really improved the food over the years.

I went to El Tepehuan before the Dir en grey concert because the restaurant seemed to be the only open place around the Gothic Theatre (later on, I noticed smashburger, oops...). El Tepehuan, I don't even know what that means. The menu had a lot of selections; not quite sure of the authenticity, but it was nice to have a large selection to choose from. I chose the Tamale Dinner: came with rice, refried beans, and two tamales. The tamales, however, tasted like they were just microwaved (i.e., not fresh). The waitress was nice, though; made sure to refill my water when I finished my glass, and also brought the food out quickly (maybe because the food WAS microwaved...). It was unprofessional of the waitress to be talking on her cell phone while she was working, though. Overall, the place was relatively clean and service was decent enough. Not sure if I'd hit up this place again though (whenever I do go back to Colorado..).

Restaurant is a neighborhood type restaurant. Went Saturday for first time and had Bob burrito which I'd recommend. Salsa is pretty good also.

There are a lot of Mexican food joints in the Denver metro area, so any Mexican restaurant here will have a lot of competition. In addition, most of us know what to expect at a Mexican restaurant. We expect unlimted chips and homemade salsa, fresh food and good Margaritas in a place that encourages a fiesta. Let me explain how El Tepehuan doesn't meet expectations. First of all, you know that diner from the Seinfeld, the one with the bright lights and bustling activity? They make diners that way so you don't hang out -- you eat, pay and get out. Unfortunately, El Tepehuan is designed like a small diner. It's very bright inside with tables fairly close together. The kitchen is an exposed area where one chef runs around putting orders together. Your clothes smell like the kitchen when you leave, no matter where you sit. The atmosphere encourages you to eat, pay and get out. You won't be hanging out for a leisurely meal over shots of tequila in this place. Secondly, everything you order will cost you. Chips and salsa are not included (though they are both good). Lettuce and tomatoes are often not included, though they will bring them for a fee. Expect to pay extra for anything you order. Lastly, let's talk about the food. Order the chips and salsa so you can try their salsa. Do you think it's spicy? Then you will think that everything else is way too spicy. Do you think it's good but it has a little "kick?" Then you will think that everything else is a bit on the spicy side. This place is for those of us who like it spicy. Yes, that includes me. So what am I complaining about? I think that they are excluding a good portion of people by making everything so spicy. When you're done, you go up to the cashier to pay. That sounds like a diner, doesn't it? A strange, Mexican diner. If you're craving Mexican food, try another place. El Tepehuan needs a bit of work.

I have been going here for 15+ years with time extended to my family for at least another 10 years. The food has always been fantastic. The waiting staff is friendly and always on top of things. The prices have maybe gone up 10% in the last decade so it's easy to say that you will be happy with prices. I would have to say this is the best Mexican restaurant in town maybe in Colorado.

I have been trying to write a review on this place for a while. I have gone here over a dozen times in the past couple of years and I LUV their food. This place is a no frills kinda place no cheesiness. The main reason why I go is the Chile relleno burrito. ( Yes I do love the Chile rellaeno burritos from about anywhere but these ones are especially good). I get it smothered with cheese on top the works. Chips are good, salsa is not so hot that I can't enjoy it. My mother (not a vegetarian) informs me that their other foods are quite delectable also. Umm this review has made me kind of hungry, it is lunch time. Okay review over have to go to El Tepehuan.

Not meant to be a cookie-cutter Mexican Restaurant. Tep has been in downtown Englewood for decades and personally, I'm glad they don't feel the need to remodel, they just focus on great food. They do a nice job making a smaller space fit all the customers. Wood-carved chairs, family photos, old school pictures definitely let you know Tep is a family owned business. As for the food, it's why we go. Good breakfast, breakfast burritos and I've yet to try anything I didn't like on the main menu (and mostly I stick with the Bob Burrito). The veggies are fresh, the meats are tender and the green chile is always amazing. I don't mind asking for the chips and salsa because their salsa is actually worth having (not like someone poured it out of a jar). The staff can get a little bogged down when it gets busy but they are always friendly and we always get our drinks, food and refills promptly. Been going here with my family since I was a kid, still great.

Take it from someone who knows what authentic Mexican food tastes like- don't eat here, you will leave disappointed. I was shocked at the poor quality of the recipes - chips were cold and stale (oh, and ya, they charge you for them), enchiladas were made with flour tortillas that appeared to be store-bought, and were DROWNING in sauce. It was disgusting. The plate looked like soup. Rice and beans don't come with combo plates (I mean, really?) - uh that would be an extra 5 bucks. Rice was dry and beans were so engorged with cheese that the beans were barely edible. It was bad, very bad. I pretty much hated everything about the experience, with the exception of a friendly waitress :/ Where oh where is the good Mexican food in Denver? Bleh.

This place was TERRIBLE! The food was awful, the service was... awful, and the cleanliness was... Yep, you guessed it, awful! If you like to eat foods that will most likely shorten your lifespan, then I would recommend this place. If the food doesn't kill you, surely you will meet the Grim Reaper while waiting for your check! We waited for what felt like decades to have our order taken, then to be served, and again to receive our check. The food was more than bland, it was like eating soggy cardboard. There was absolutely no flavor even when smothered in red sauce. I wouldn't eat hear again if you payed me.

I'm surprised at the mediocre reviews of El Tepehuan. As a native Coloradan I was introduces to El Tepehuan only about seven years ago by a friend from California! The green chile is the best in the city hands down, unless it's homemade. Most other Mexican restaurants have some sort of goopy chile with a pinkish hue that isn't flavorful and has a cheap, chemically engineered spice. With green chile vendors on almost every corner you'd think every Mexican restaurant in Denver would use fresh chiles, but I digress. I now live in NYC and the Mexican food is, well, a work in progress. Every time I'm home I make sure to stop at El Tepehuan for something tasty smothered in their delicious green chile! P.S. The red chile is good too!

I came on the recommendation of a friend that bragged on it big time. I usually go for the chili rellano on my first time trying a Mexican restaurant but the chicharonn burrito called my name - it had a little of a hot bite. It seemed a little bit heavy on the black pepper which is not to my liking but overall good

We've eaten here twice in a week and will be back soon for more chili rellenos. So good! My mouth is on fire and heartburn is sure to follow, but both are worth it. The horchata is great and and their nachos are too. Have a relleno plate and you will never be disappointed.

YUM!!! I read other reviews of El Tepehuan here on Yelp and elsewhere and I was lukewarm on visiting there. My wife wanted to check it out, though, and my mom was in town and feeling like Mexican so we all met at El Tepehuan. YUM!!

I have never been disappointed with the family dive..El Tepehuan. My only complaint would be they tend to use too much cheese. My family have been loyal customers for as long as the restaurant has been opened. Only during a brief period when they hired a new cook was the food disappointing. Once they got the old cook back, all was right again. The Big Bob Burrito, Fajitas, and Combination platters are always more than satisfying for a large mammal! If you didn't like it, try it again! Honestly the service may be a little slow sometimes but it's one of the few restaurants that have been around more than 10 years in the same place run by the same family. Prices are better than the Blue Bonnet any day! Enjoy beer with lime, and a taco!

I can't believe I have never written a review for Teps. I have been eating here for years... I mean like 20 years. The salsa is spicy, the guac is homemade, and the nachos are a whole nother story. They are corn tortillas, flat on a plate, smothered with beans, green chili and cheese. Oh, so good. They serve them with guac and chips but just a fork would do. Plus, it is a ton of food for great prices. My mom and sister split the Bob burrito. Just writing about this has made me hungry.... I may need to head down there tonight.

  • Jim S.

I've been here for lunch a few times, but took my wife her for her first time for dinner tonight. There was one open table when we got in We sat down and right away we were given menus and our drink order was taken (my recommendation: skip the margaritas, just have a beer). We both had the Bob burrito. yes it is a bit Americanized, but the shredded beef is fantastic and so is the green chile. The service was great, the food came out quickly and hot and we both were stuffed. The only thing my wife complained about was that I had not brought her here sooner. As other reviewers have pointed out, you go here for delicious quick very reasonably priced food, not for a nice romantic dinner. The ambiance might be lacking but your stomach will be full and your wallet will still be too. We will certainly be back.

The fare is a solid, authentic style mexican. I had the huevos rancheros, which was very tasty. The rest of the family was satisfied with their choices as well. Could have been four stars, but the service was pretty surly. This will definitely be my neighborhood go-to spot for Mexican when I don't want to drive to Taco de Mexico.

Canned Beans and Yellow Cheese. That about says it all. As a Mexican, i was suprised that they served me canned beans and yellow cheese. It reminded me of another place in Denver that uses velvetta cheese to fill the rellenos. When the waiter brought that over, all i could say was "C'mon, really? Yellow cheese to a Mexican?" Overall the service at Tepehuan was ok. The place was full which means they are doing something right, but this place is not for me. There are too many places in Denver that do it right, this just is n't one of them.

    (1)
  • Sarah H.

Meh. I've had worse, but I've certainly had better, too. The problem with Tepehuan is that it's kind of greasy and the flavors, while pleasant enough, are overwhelmed by all that cheese. I'd rather drive a little further away and get something tastier.

This smaller place serves up some of the best Mexican food in Denver. I have been a loyal patron for many years and have tried many of the other Mexican joints in town. Their food is definitely Mexican as opposed to the more American-Mexican you'd find at Hacienda, Benny's or Blue Bonnet. The chips and salsa are tied for the best in town (next to Doras). If you dig the Mex, they have a great menu. I usually order the Bob Burrito and have enough to take home (and I eat a lot). Try it and you won't be disappointed!

All I can say is Bob's Burrito. This is a working man's resteraunt. You will rub shoulders here with Denvers finest carpenters, mechanics and service techs. Good value for the money. Great service for takeout. Great for lunch, have never been here for dinner. One thing for sure, there will be an angioplasty in your future if you dine here every day. Chow.

Is this food gringomex? A little. Is it delicious? Yes! For the decade and a half that my family and I have frequented this spot, I've hardly been able to tear myself away from the "Bob Burrito." The shredded beef in this burrito must be seasoned with magic from the Aztec gods that adorn the walls of this restaurant. It's delicious. The avocado at the top always seems to be perfectly buttery and delicious. One can even discount the mounds of cheese they throw at things for the pure heaven this burrito offers. This place is usually packed at most times of day, so try to head there in the off hours. Try not to consume too many liquids while dining at this place, because their bathrooms are on the scary side. Their chili is a good level of "hot," not old-school chubby's style, but enough to make you remember what you are eating.

Perfection in every bite. I came here around a year ago because a friend recommended it to me. I had the Carne Asada Burrito and from the first bite I fell in love. Not only was the meat tender and delectable but the rice and beans that accompanied it were splendid. Every time I pass by Denver now I try and stop by Englewood to get a burrito!

Great, authentic Mexican food at a cheap price! Good size portions, and great atmosphere (maybe a little cramped when they're busy) and friendly staff. The burritos and chimis are outstanding! If you're looking for some great Mexican food this is the place to go! As far as alcohol goes, they don't have a full bar, just beer. There are 2 bars within walking distance if you feel the urge for an after dinner cocktail! Enjoy.

Great place to go before a concert at The Gothic...or Sunday breakfast... You can go gringo...or heat it up like a pro....And now...MARGARITAS... oh ya baby....not just beer and wine any more....a little hole in the wall on south Broadway....nothin fancy....just good eatin... Enjoy... "Breeze"

Delicious Mexican food in a hole-in-the-wall setting. Can anything get any better than this? Went to El Tepehuan for lunch with coworkers, the gal I was with goes there every Saturday morning. Although very crowded, small, and a bit noisy, they have great mexican food, with a very large menu. I had the shrimp fajitas; and a plus, they serve mountain dew. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for cool place to eat in downtown Englewood, Colorado.

I have been dining at this place since I was little. They are delicious but I have to say things have changed over the years. The rice used to be amazing but now it tastes old and dried out every time I get it. The service is friendly and the menu hasn't changed over the years so you can still get your favorite Bob burrito which is a must try. It is small and usually busy and walking into the back entrance at night is kind of shady but it is definitely delicious!

  • Matthew B.

El Tepehuan is my girlfriend and my euphemism for diarrhea. That should let you know that their spicy food is kickin'. It's NOT the best gringomex in town, but if you are seeing a show at the gothic then this is a decent place to have a bite.

    (3)
  • Doug Y.

Should be rated higher probably at least a 3 1/2 but I can't figure out what to call the food. The staff is Mexican but the food leans toward the gringo clientele that frequents this little spot on Broadway. Regardless of the style it is pretty tasty and open early for breakfast (there's also parking in the rear with a rear entrance too). I guess for gringo mex it's a four but for mexicano mex it's a three. Whatever, I eat here when I'm close and especially for breakfast.

Every time I drive by El Tepehuan on Broadway, I always say to myself, "I want to check it out sometime." Sometime finally happened this weekend and we stopped in for a late breafast/early lunch. I really liked the menu options and went with an egg and potato burrito with green chili. It was good, but my mouth was truly on fire from the green chili. I thought I could handle spice, but this was well beyond my tolerance levels, so I had to get some sour cream to help. Now that I know, I'll have to ask for it on the side the next time I return. It's a small spot with an open kichen. You can tell that it has been around for a while as the decor is pretty dated, but this isn't a place you come to for an ambiance...you come here for good mexican, which is what I got. It's not on my top list of favorite mexican spots around town, but I will return and try more of the menu.

Have lunch here a couple of times a month. Usually get Combo E ... Chile relleno, bean burro, and taco. Consistently good!

  • Angie S.

The food is pretty good which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars. First of all they charge for chips and salsa... not cool in my book el tepehuan.... not cool! Anyways, I've been there many times and I think I won't go anymore because I don't eat meat and whenever I order anything that requires them to leave the meat off, they always put it on. For example I asked for a burrito with red sauce and they gave me one with pork green chili. When I asked them to fix it and told them I don't eat meat, they just put red sauce over the green chili and returned it with the pork still all over it. I hope it was perhaps a language barrier and not just plain laziness. The customer service isn't the greatest, but their foods pretty alright. To sum things up.... "Meh..." Vegetarians beware unless you get the vegetarian burrito, that's the only thing they have repeatedly gotten right with me! Also it's got the most awkward seating and you have to stick your butt in people's faces to get into your seat. I'd worry about a person with a wheelchair actually being able to get through. My guess is it would require lots of tables to be moved out of the way.

one of the better places for Mexican food in Denver and i really don't care for spicy. i would definitely come back. the tacos al carbon were great and their margaritas were potent. let's just say i had a great time at the gothic later that night!

I really really want to give this place five stars. I love that it's been around for 35 years. The La Negra cheese and chorizo dip is off the charts. The combo plates will knock your socks off and leave you leftovers. The chile rellanos are so good it hurts. The prices are super reasonable. But the ambiance and the service are just slightly off. My suggestions: ditch the fluorescent lighting and hire some attentive, pleasant servers who check back once or twice and refill drinks and this place would be a clear five stars.

Very fresh tasting ingredients. I love there beef tacos and the steak burrito is really good too. Probably the best chili relleno I've had in awhile. There chips & salsa are top notch too.

  • Roxanne M.

Like some others have said, this place is definitely not authentic mexican food. However, it is delicious food. This is my all time favorite place for chorizo and eggs. They smother it with green chili (not the scary neon orange green chili at some of the cheap mexican places around here) and yes, lots of cheese (I LOVE cheese). They also have the largest chimichanga "Grande" I have ever seen. One night I was in here with my dad and I got about half way through one and my stomach started to hurt. But it was so good I had to keep eating. I started crying "I Can't Stop!" Yes it has a funky outdated, trapped in a 1960's time capsule, typical local old-school Englewood vibe to it but that's why part of why I love it (and the rest of Englewood).

I went here for the first time a couple of days ago and was expecting a little more. Like others on here have said, they CHARGE for chips and salsa. I have never been to a mexican place that does that. But we ordered "le negro" for an appetizer, its a cheesy, chorizo-ey, green peppery mixture that is SO good, but quite greasy. It tastes amazing though. I got the enchiladas and really liked them alot, the red sauce they use is sweet and could use a little more spice, but overall it was really good. My boyfriend got chili rellanos, and he was really disappointed because he didn't like the green chili and they don't fry the rellanos. But we will go back! I've heard their tacos are great so I'm going to try them!

Just went yesterday for an early dinner. Not many patrons there. I ordered the Mexican Steak. I cut the steak into pieces and added the steak & vegetables to make burritos with the tortillas. The steak comes with a very tasty but very spicy sauce which will leave your mouth on fire - a cold drink is a must. The little burritos I made were absolutely delicious. The tortillas were thick and served good n' hot. The sides of rice and refried beans were disappointing, however. There wasn't enough of either, the rice was a bit dried out, and the refried beans were covered up by the steak sauce. There also weren't enough vegetables for my burritos. They also didn't bring out any chips and salsa right after I sat down - in my experience, most Mexican restaurants do that. I guess I'll need to remember to order them next time. As others have said, the ambiance of the place isn't much to speak about. As I sat down, I was met by a very large and persistently annoying housefly. It left, thankfully, when the meal arrived. Guess the steak was too spicy for him. The steak gets 4 stars, the rest a 2. I'm definitely going back to try the Bob Burrito everyone raves about, and will update my review then.

Awesome Place. Entering from the street, you are immediately greeted with mouth watering aromas from the grill (which is right by the door). The food is very fresh and I've never had anything that wasn't great. They serve breakfast all day and pretty much the menu all day. Sometimes I don't want breakfast food for breakfast so I get the Tacos al Carbon. Portions are large and the price very reasonable. FYI. The seating is a little cramped, chairs are not that comfortable and the ambiance lacking but the great food makes up for it.

Good, solid and family run. My buddy dragged me here after we laid 1200 bricks for my patio. I was hungry. The horchata was good and I could see him sweating as he ate his green chili. He was quiet so that's a good sign. My tamale was homemade and delicious as were my chicken tacos in what I think was a homemade crispy corn shell. I would return.

Went with a buddy on a slow Saturday. Got some nachos before grabbing beers next door. Service was great and friendly. The nachos were excellent and huge. Excited to see this place move into a nicer venue. Also excited that they now provide a food menu to the Brew On Broadway. Will be back.

Thanks Yelp! We came into Denver for a doctors appt. And wanted Mexican. We drove up and we're skeptical because so few cars on the street. Entered the cafe ambiance and business was booming.

Our "go to" place for Mexican food. The salsa is hot, the food is fast and fresh, and the staff is friendly! Need a recommendation? We get the BOB burrito every time. Mmmm! Now my mouth is watering...

This place is awesome! Found it on Yelp and wandered in solo. I tried the House Special, which was truly too much food, but I tried like hell to fit every last bite in! If you're looking for great Mexican food in the Denver area, definitely make a stop here! I only wish I lived closer for take-out!!!

Tepehuan catered a corporate event for me recently. To the good: the food! Fresh, not too greasy, great green chili. To the bad: we ate too much and drank beer and then nobody really wanted to do any work.

Had cheese enchiladas, they were fair. The sauce was just tomato w/chili powder! Mole was "very" dry & shredded. No mole sauce at all! Over all REVIEW...Very pricey for what you get!

El Tep has the best authentic Mexican food around, hands down. We always make sure to order take home pints of their refried beans, green chili and salsa. Phenomenal!

My wife and I come here at least 3 times a month. It is a great go to spot with delicious food. There are two things I would suggest staying away from.... The water is not filtered and they charge for their chips and salsa. Other than that this place is legit. Their green chili is some of the best I've found in Colorado.

If you are looking for good authentic Mexican food.... This is the place to go. Their Chile Relleno's are second to none in my opinion. The wait staff is always ready to serve you. They have great salsa and green chile. Their prices are very reasonable. Keep up the good work.

I give it 2 stars because of price..The food is 3 stars..$14.20- for a carne asada burrito, beef tostada and they charge $1.80- for chips and salsa..Oh and a glass of water..Kind of a rip off for a little dive mom and pop joint..I know a better place down the street!

Best burrito smothered in green chili I've ever had. I knew the food was going to be good, they have the best/hottest table salsa in town; no joke, absolutely delicious. Highly suggest to take home a quart.

Amazing mexican food! This is seriously one of the best mexican joints around. I'm, addicted to the Bob Burrito and the delicious salsa. If you haven't been to this scruffy joint, stop in a prepare to be blown away by flavor!

Chow.

Enjoy.

El Tepehuan is my girlfriend and my euphemism for diarrhea. That should let you know that their spicy food is kickin'. It's NOT the best gringomex in town, but if you are seeing a show at the gothic then this is a decent place to have a bite.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
