This review is for the bakery. We had seen the bakery on a walk and after dinner at a different location stopped by for a desert and something to take back to the room for a snack with coffee before bed. We were there after 7:00pm and the selection I am sure was not as good as if we had been there earlier but there was plenty to choose from. Not being able to make a choice we asked the lady behind the counter for recommendations. After asking a few questions she recommended a chocolate bar made of layers of pastry and chocolate. Sorry forgot the name, a lemon tart and a shortbread cookie my wife picked out. Sitting outside we had half cookie each, half the lemon tart and I a quarter of the chocolate bar. The lemon tart was good but would try something else next time. Nothing wrong just I am not that fond of lemon. The chocolate bar was extremely good and I was happy I saved some for later with coffee. My wife maces over 4000 cookies during Christmas to make over 50 cookie trays for family, friends and our children's friends. That was the primary reason to try the shortbread cookie. It was shortbread with pecans and a drop of chocolate on top. Great cookie. This year this cookie will be in the mix. Price wise yes the pastry is what some would call expensive. We expected that to be so when we went in. If you travel the price we paid was no more than anywhere else. Happy eating.

All our food was bland. But what made the visit so poor was our server. To begin with he never introduced himself, so how do we know who's taking care of us? We only saw him a few times and when we did he didn't really attend to us. Secondly, we had to ask for refills three times. Lastly, when he dropped the check off at the table he hovered over us until we were ready to pay. The food being not too great is one thing, that I can overlook, but the poor service

This place ain't cheap but it's really good. My boyfriend and I had breakfast here on a Saturday. I was surprised it wasn't busier - maybe Durango isn't much of a breakfast town? We walked in and got a table right away. I ordered the basic breakfast and my boyfriend got the quiche. Both orders came with one of their croissants and butter and jam. Everything was really tasty but the croissant really was the standout. It was big and fluffy and flaky in all the right ways. Paired with the butter and jam.....oh my yum! It made the meal. This place is super cute, everyone working there was really nice, and the food was excellent. A great choice in downtown Durango.

Excellent service and food. It's a little pricy but worth it. We ordered two breakfasts for a family of four and it was perfect. Our server had our orders split and ever offered us a Togo coffee as we were leAving.

Such a cute café / bakery / bar. Located in downtown Durango on historical main st., the furnishings are a mix of rustic and chic. The bakery had fresh pastries and bread. We chose some less expensive options for breakfast like the beautifully cut fruit salad, a pastry, and a latte. With menu items like crab crepes, you can imagine how easy it would be to break the bank. I had the chocolate royale, and I wasn't sorry...in fact I'm still dreaming about it all the way in Phoenix.

Dropped in for a pastry; didn't eat at their restaurant. Service was friendly and there were still quite a few pastry options available in the evening. I went with a lemon tart. It was really good - crunchy crust, creamy lemon filling. But, it's seriously overpriced at close to $7 for a tiny tart. Prices are not listed, so I'd advise asking before ordering.

Beautiful building, tasty pastry but coffee was a huge disappointment. Also quite overpriced. $17 for quiche? no thanks.

Stopped in a bought some pastries after a day of skiing. We bought the flan, strawberry napoleon, and jalapeno cream cheese croissant. The croissant was very good, especially after being warmed up. The strawberry napoleon was also decent, though I was expecting more cake-y layers, but they used some sort of crisp instead. The flan was unlike any flan that I had ever had - it had a more cake-like texture rather than the egg-y/pudding texture. It was weird and I didn't like it. Many of the pastries were also quite pricy considering the quality.

This is a review of the croissant, nothing more. Croissants are an art form, worth waiting in line an hour in the rain for one bite of a top croissant (I've done it). These croissants rank 5-6 on a 10 point scale, which is actually pretty good for a US bakery. I wouldn't wait in line for them, but I did enjoy it. Not as flaky or with as much flavor as is possible, but good enough.

I love this quaint French bakery and restaurant. We've had breakfast and lunch there. Everything was delicious Everyone was polite helpful and very accommodating. The pianist was wonderful. We will definitely be back on our next trip from Missouri

My second trip to Durango, and I was determined to eat at the Jean-Pierre Bakery. Jean-Pierre serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Being the only child of two people who survived the Depression, I don't like to spend a lot of money, but I really wanted to try this restaurant. I figured the best way to enjoy the food and take it easy on my wallet was going for breakfast. I was at Jean-Pierre Bakery at 9am, shortly after they opened, on a Wednesday morning. There was only one other customer, and he was sitting by himself, splitting his attention between his meal and his I-Pad. I got a seat near the fireplace, which felt very welcome on a cool morning. The atmosphere aims to be a Bistro, or at least as close as us middle-Americans can deal with a bistro. Brick walls, fireplace, and music from the Swing Era. I heard the long version of "Swing Swing Swing" by Benny Goodman and his band while I was eating. If that's not your kind of music, it may annoy you, but I had old parents, and I grew up with swing music. It worked for me. I ordered a bacon and Swiss quiche. It came with a croissant and a fresh fruit salad. It cost $15.60. With tip, I ended up spending $20.00. You know what, friends? In my world, that's an awful lot of money to spend on breakfast. In my home territory, that's what I spend for a dinner. That's expensive. But heck, it was vacation. On vacation, we do the things we don't do at home. And you know what? The food was really good, and the portion size was generous. I didn't eat again till suppertime. Not because I spent too much on breakfast, but because I was so satiated. With only two tables to serve, the waitress was friendly and attentive. Jean-Pierre Bakery gets a four-star rating from me, because I liked the food, the atmosphere, and the service. I still think $15.60 was a lot to pay. What if you had a party of four? If everybody had coffee, you'd be looking at a bill close to $100. For breakfast!! For a one-time-only experience, it was good. If I ever go again, though, somebody else is going to pay.

I'm French and this is far from being authentic. Pricey, not so good service. The two stars are just for the ambiance and location.

This was the perfect find for us in Durango, a great little breakfast place in Durango. The place is super cute inside with a brick fireplace, and nice bar on the other side, and a very French interior which we just loved to pieces. We arrived just in time to order off the breakfast menu, thank you very much. We ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich and the crab crepes. Both were pretty good. A pet peeve of the BF is lukewarm food, and this food was definitely not hot, just moderately warm which brings the food down quite a bit. Service was just okay, our waitress seemed to disappear quite a bit. The bonus was this cute little boy, white blond hair that walked around and refilled waters. He called me mamn twice and it made me giggle both times. He was my favorite part of breakfast. The exceptional items at Jean-Pierre are the croissants! For the trip back to Denver we got a butter croissant, a ham and cheese croissant, and an almond croissant. They are flaky, buttery and taste like a pastry cloud from heaven. So delicious you can't stop. If we were there longer I would have had one or more every day. Overall, breakfast was okay, croissants were out of this world perfection and this place is a perfect fit for Durango.

We had dinner here after the train, and it was a nice way to finish a great day. Wife had the shrimp pot pie (I speak no French), and loved it.I had the lobster and crab bisque, best I've ever had, and then the filet and frites, filet was tender, had some fat which is strange for a filet mignon. Hidden under a ridiculous serving of fries was fresh and delicious melon, grapes, and Bree. The Bree pulled it all together. We finished with creme brûlée, a personal favorite. Fabulous. Only one complaint. My Budweiser, (I know, how inappropriate), and it was warm. So, 4 stars. But a really nice meal, all in all. And the place is beautifully decorated. Don't forget the macaroons!

The bread is homemade and to die for! Take some home for toast the next morning. We initially stopped in for happy hour and had wine which was wonderful-dry, full bodied and fulfilling. There were few people there as we arrived at 4pm but the restaurant began to fill up. There is music so check it out. We came for lunch the next day and had their lobster bisque-wonderfully creamy with hints of pimento and quiche for the husband and friands for me. Both were small portions in keeping with the French style and the flavor was wonderful. Had we room, dessert would have been attempted. The bakery offers a plethora of beautifully presented and tasty French treats. What a wonderful addition to the Durango Vibe!

Cute little place with lots of antique details. Our server was very professional. We order orange juice which was freshly squeezed to order at $5.50 a glass. Saw that after we ordered it. I got French toast which was good but not spectacular for $15. I like how they served whipped cream instead of butter with it. My bf got the cross isn't sandwich which was big and tasty, but still not worth $15 either. Everything was good but way over priced. The breads are supposed to be fresh but sure didn't taste like it.

Grabbed a croissant in the morning. Surprising to find such an extensive array of pastries. My go-to is always the chocolate and this version was rather pedestrian at a big price of $4.37 for one. As a matter of fact, if you look at the outdoor menu and your jaw doesn't drop at the price points, then you need glasses. I think it was 8 bucks for a croissant and coffee deal - no thanks. It was an average croissant, but still flaky and if your craving one, it wouldn't be your worst choice.

Stopped in for breakfast. The ambience is really nice. Unfortunately, the service was cranky and harassed seeming, and the food quite expensive for what it was. Also, pretty slow. Good, flaky croissants though.

Amazing food, pricey but worth every cent. The special Rabbit stew was incredible while the boeuf de bleu was one of the best taking tenderloin steaks I've ever had. Buy any bottle of wine and get the free cheese plate & the pastries are as close to Paris you can get

We've eaten here for years, as well as recommended it to family and guests, but a recent experience has soured this local bistro for us. After breakfast with friends a couple of weeks ago, we recognized that our server was having problems with our bill. He seemed new and admitted that he had difficulties with our card, but insisted the problem was solved. Unfortunately, when we got home and checked our account, we found that we'd been charged for another table's meal as well as our own. We could perhaps excuse an inexperienced server, but when I went in a few days later to straighten out the problem, the "manager" not only offered no apology, but was curt, rude, and basically said he couldn't help me. After working with a different employee over the course of several days, the incorrect charge was finally removed, but there are enough restaurants in Durango that I doubt we'll feel it necessary to return to this one.

For a small of quiche at $15 I had pretty high expectations...well, it didn't reach them. Food was just ok, nothing to write home about. Service and atmosphere were great but when I'm going to eat, my main priority is that the food is good.

We stopped in for breakfast on Sunday morning. Caleb was supposed to be our server. We sat for about 5 minutes before he walked up and asked if he could get us something to drink. We both ordered coffee and water. He wandered off. Another male server stops by to ask if we were ready to order. We told him that another guy had taken our order for coffee and water but we also wanted a couple of pastries and a melon bowl. Caleb shows up about 10 minutes later with our food. Then notices that we still don't have coffee and brings that a few minutes later. When he sets the coffee down he actually said "Those waters should be along shortly". I wanted to ask if I could watch them magically fill and deliver themselves because I knew he was never going to bring them. While waiting for coffee I watched Caleb stand in the back of the restaurant and stare into space for a few minutes like he had nothing to do. The melon bowl was a larger bowl of fresh fruit and was very tasty, the pastries (a chocolate croissant and an apricot horn) were excellent. Caleb needs to be retrained or he will starve to death as a server.

My husband had country breakfast and was very good and came w croissant. I paid $20 for lump crab and asparagus crepe. They used blue crab and loaded w red onion. Crepe itself was very fresh. Bakery is very nice, love the meringue. Very friendly staffs

Had lunch here. Ordered the Croque Monsieur with a side salad. Salad was delicious. But very expensive for what you get. Sandwich was ok. Extremely slow wait staff. We had now been waiting 20 minutes for the check. Probably will not return for a meal, just stop in to pick up pastries.

My boyfriend and I went here for breakfast. We don't live in Durango so we read about this restaurant online. Atmosphere was awesome. I loved looking around at all the wall decor. They also had a pianist so we got to listen to live music which was really nice. To drink we got coffee and orange juice. The orange juice was really good- made fresh!!! Coffee was also good and had great flavor. My boyfriend ordered the eggs Benedict plate and said the eggs were poached perfectly and it tasted great. The croissant it was on was not soggy so he could tell it was made fresh. Only critique is it could have had more salt but that may be a personal preference. I ordered an omelet with cheddar and sausage. The sausage was really good. They used a perfect amount of cheese- not too much. My only suggestion would be to add more egg. Also the croissants are amazing. Service was good. Food got to us fast! All in all, we enjoyed it and will stop by again next time we are in town!

J'adore les croissants au chocolat et cappuccino plus que la plupart des gens! Buttery, flakey, amazing goodness wrapped around delectable chocolate.... Oh my... The chocolate croissant was so close to what I had in Paris! The chocolate was just a little more melted, and I was of course sitting in a restaurant in America, so the ambience was different... But oh how they tried!!! The big warm fireplace and cramped space to walk around tables definitely took me back to my week in Paris. The cappuccino was delicious and also made me think of France. I'm giving this only 4 stars because the service was very slow and they didn't get our order right the first time, in fact they completely forgot my husbands mocha. The server did however get it to go for us as we were leaving. I would give them 5 stars based on just the croissant alone. Mmmm Yum!

Get the free cheese plate when you order a bottle of wine. The wine menu is extensive, reasonably priced and the cheese plate is freaking amazing, worth $20 on its own.

Simply delicious. This place never disappoints. The price point is a little high but with the ingredients and care he puts into his dishes you can see why. I had the Croque Monsieur with the Lobster and Crab Bisque. While the dish looks simple the flavors where fantastic and complex. A perfect lunch. He also gets extra bonus points for supporting local farmers.

My family and I stopped here for breakfast before heading home from Durango. Very cute interior and quite a large place. I had a breakfast croissant that had egg, ham, gruyere, and tomato and it came with home fries. It was delicious. My kids shared the French toast (one order cost quite a bit, around $13) and it was plenty of food for both of them-in fact, they each got three half-pieces of toast and the cook divided the dish onto two plates and gave them each their own plentiful serving of fruit. The French toast was served with warm pure maple syrup and sweetened creme fraiche. It was really good. My husband had a side of sausage and a side of fruit. I also shared my home fries with him. I had a cup of tea and the waitress was nice enough to give me a to-go cup with a second serving of hot water and a fresh tea bag for the road. I'd come back here again. The waitress wasn't terribly warm, but she met our needs. This breakfast for 4 cost over $50, so not an inexpensive place to go, but it was a lot of food.

Worst restaurant experience in Durango. One server was rolling her eyes at customers while touching her mouth and face before selecting pastries. Our own server brought the French onion soup (measly and not that good for a whopping $10.50) and E had finished it by the time I was finally brought my raspberry croissant. Food is overpriced. Service is worst in town. Don't go here unless you are getting pastries to-go (because they really are quite delicious).

  • Jodie P.

Breakfast smelled of disinfectant! Who mops the floors while serving breakfast? Obnoxious! Then the prices in this place make you think you are in Manhattan, not a Durango! Finally, my pet peave: expensive food served with silverware that should be used in prisons. Cheap forks and knives that undercut the class and the price point that this place is striving to hit. Good croissant, quiche, and coffee for over $20 is absurd.

  • Marshall B.

We weren't in Durango long enough to try out the restaurant, but I am qualified to brag about the bakery. Everything we tried, and there's an enormous selection, was great. I especially liked the coffee macaroons which were made all the more dangerous by the fact that they are bite sized. Don't miss stopping on the corner of main for a treat!

  • Jeff B.

Really nice pastry place with cool atmosphere. They had 2 GF pastries which was cool. They had one guy (maybe owner or manager) and 1 attendant she was covering counter and tables. Kinda spread thin but I didn't have to wait. I had Macaroon cookies and coffee. Friendly place with awesome looking croissants. Looks like they even had a spicy one. Good place 3-4 stars worth a try. I liked it. I came on reviews from my other yelp friends and they were spot on!

  • Jeannie Q.

The orange chocolate pastry I had was amazing. It was a generous size but I still wished for more after I finished because it was that good! Obviously that is a combo not everyone would like, but I loved it and it seemed that all of the pastries were of high quality.

Popped in for a coffee and croissant. Got the wrong coffee order. Places' decor need a good dusting. The croissant was good but the butter was unspreadabke due to it coming straight out of the cooler.

  • Kathleen W.

Good croissant, very nice. Unfortunately, the restaurant is wildly overpriced ($17 strawberry crepes?). We were seated at the worlds most crooked table, under a picture in an ornate, absolutely dust covered frame, ick. Our croissant with butter and jam came with a good three tablespoons of ice cold butter and a teaspoon of jam in the same plastic cup. My husband got the wrong coffee order entirely. Skip this place unless youre getting baked goods to go.

What a find!!!!! As good as France. We had breakfast there and it was unreal. Perfect croissants and really authentic.. Could not be better.. Great service by Sarah and the young boy who helped was precious. Best sugar cookies in the world bar none. What a place. Which we had a place like this in Houston!!! The best breakfast I have ever had and I have been to almost 20 countries. Please go ther for the great service and insane food.

Super nice guy working who was kind enough to treat me to a croissant because I had to wait a couple minutes for them to serve me. Felt compelled to give them a five star review. Was waiting for a cab and decided to walk in here and did not regret it. The food is delicious!

My husband and I visited for breakfast on a weekday morning. Despite there being very few customers (I imagine this is different on the weekends), our service was top notch and the food was amazing; flavors that were fresh, made at the time of our order, and just the right portion size. This is a non-greasy, non-prepackaged foods kind of place. Bonus: fresh squeezed orange juice in huge glasses. Oh-and did I say I would like to have taken home one each of their traditional French pastries?!

We went twice. Once for breakfast , and once for dinner. Both visits were very good. Half the place is a winebar/restaurant. For breakfast, I had an Eggs Benedict made over a croissant instead of an English muffin. It was very, very good. The best though was dinner. They're only open for dinner Thurs-Sat at this time of year. The menu is unbelievable, featuring classic French dishes. I had a really fine Coq au Vin. Beautifully prepared and presented! A cheese plate comes complimentary with a bottle of wine, and it was one of the finest I've had. The wine list is complete with wines from all over the world. The service was very good. A young woman named Noelle was the lone server that night and she was very familiar with each dish. She is a true asset to the place. The bakery aspect of the place is great! On both visits , we got pastry to go. The bread is excellent ! Highly recommended!

Came here to pick up croissants for breakfast. The quality of the croissants was fantastic. Nice soft layered middle with just the right amount of flakiness on the outside. The chocolate croissant was filled with a delicious dark chocolate middle. This place clearly knows how to bake. That said, I thought the price of $4.50 per croissant was a bit steep.

I really do enjoy dining here. We eat out probably three meals a week. Sometimes more. My husband and I really enjoy coming for a bottle of wine, the free cheese platter. Very nice selection of cheeses. The bad news is the prices of their salads and soups. Way too high. $15 for a Caesar salad is way over priced. Today several of my friends went for lunch. The french onion soup was outrageous. Over $12 for a small bowl of soup. Your food is very nice, but dont over price everything. The locals wont support it and the tourists wont come in. Your main entrees i thought were fairly priced. Also, a french restaurant should surely have some pate now and then. A terrine de foie gras would be great once a month.

Ooh, la, LA!!! One week in Durango and we found ourselves at Jean Pierre's 4 times. All I can say is that you will be pleased with the lovely, efficient staff, the exquisite pastries, the absolutely perfectly fluffy omelet, the wine, the cheese...... Just GO!!!! If nothing else you will be entranced with the decor ;-)

VERY VERY disappointed. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. My girlfriend and I were excited about going to this little french bakery one block away from our hotel. I wish we would have read the yelp reviews before going!! The interior ambiance was wonderful and beautifully constructed. However, nothing could have prepared us for their miserable food. We were sat by a very polite young boy who couldn't have been more than 12 and instantly added to the charm of a "family run shop." We ordered two coffees from the nice female server and were served two cold/lukewarm cups. Mine was also coated with coffee grounds. So, we had to ask for a fresh batch. It wasn't that big of a deal, but it was nearly freezing and raining outside and not much warmer in the restaurant. So, we also asked to be moved by the gas fireplace - the only heat source, but a nice touch. The place was completely empty with the exception of one family in the back room - kind of odd for a Sunday morning. I had been craving a nice big plate of eggs benedict and noticed that it was available for $15. Everything felt overpriced and with that we had certain expectations. However, what I got was a chewy croissant topped with cheap, super thin, slice of square deli ham, and eggs. The hollandaise was fine, but the side of potatoes was literally burnt to a crisp and inedible. A slice of orange and spinach leaf garnished the dish but appeared to have been left out too long as the orange was dried up and the spinach was wilted and nasty looking. It was borderline unsanitary and very unappetizing. I'm not a picky eater, it was the first time I can remember sending a plate of food back. So, instead of re-ordering, we focused on my girlfriend's quiche - which was actually ok. The one redeeming quality of the entire experience was our kind server. She felt so embarrassed about our experience that she offered us a few free pastries to go. Needless to say, we will not be back for breakfast again. If you're looking for a decent pastry though, you might get lucky.

Amazing eggs benedict. Outstanding omelettes. Fantastic croissants! The negative reviews here are clearly posted by people with no sense of taste or believe that "value" equates to copious amounts of mediocre food.

After reading the previous reviews, was hesitant to return. It was after lunchtime, so no wait for a table. Desserts looked good in the window! Decided to share the quiche - it was OK but a little cold, had not been heated properly. Soup was good and the kids enjoyed their sandwiches. Decor is quaint, but probably too many other choices in town to return.

Beautiful baked goods, but service lacking a bit. We stopped by Jean-Pierre Bakery to grab some snacks on our drive home. The plethora of pastries and breads was tantalizing! We opted for a chocolate croissant and some macarons to-go. For 1 chocolate croissant and 4 of the smallest macarons I've ever seen (about the size of a silver dollar), we paid $10!!! Beware - they don't have prices displayed with their baked goods. Even though everything we bought was delicious, the prices are pretty steep. I got a little irked when I asked what favors the macarons were and the young lady behind the counter didn't know. Her answers: "I think it's either chocolate, espresso, or mocha and I think the green one might be mint." I don't have the luxury of coming across French macarons that often, so I bought some despite not knowing what flavor it was. Turns out they were chocolate. When the young lady was ringing me up, she was discussing my order she was entering in the register with her co-workers and saying she didn't know what codes to use for the macarons (while I was waiting at the register to pay). Overall, the baked goods are delicious, just have some patience while dealing with the staff as they're not knowledgeable with their products. Bring your deep pockets as well - expect to pay a pretty penny.

Stopped by for 2 croissants to go: 1 ham & cheese and 1 plain. These 2 croissants cost $9! While the croissant was very good, I don't think it was worth that much money. There was no one in the place at 8am and I wonder if the cost is going to drive out their business?

Outrageously expensive for little Durango. We couldn't believe the prices and the service is not good. We wanted to leave but we were in a hurry so we ordered the croissant and coffee only. This restaurant exists to take advantage of tourists. Period. The locals know better. Shame.

  • David S.

While I give this three stars, I was somewhat disappointed in the potential and promise, versus the actual. I grabbed a dozen croissants, and an espresso. The croissants, a French staple, were not even slightly light or flaky. Prices did seem high. It is better than Starbuck's, but not up to the hype about it being the best French bakery outside of Paris.

Saw the little bakery while wondering on the street and finally got a chance to try it. Very sweet service. Had the Strawberry Napoleon, REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD! My philosophy is, you use real whip, you win. Everything was just right, and the desert was not intensely sweet either. However, this place lose one star due to coffee. I'm sorry, I am expecting awesome coffee instead of caffeinated water. XP Also, it would be great if Jean-Pierre can label their pastry...I felt somewhat idiotic to point at some kinda cake and go: what in the world is that? Looks so awesome!

Friendly and appreciative service. However, we went for dessert and they seemed confused by us...?? The strawberry macaroons were amazing and the raspberry tart was good. But our Napoleon was stale :(

Veerrrrrrry slow service.. and seemed a bit .. I don't know. Clueless? Haphazard? The poor saps that have to wait at the front door while someone seats them .. it's just weird. The food was pretty good, but not great .. especially for the price. I would go back, but now I know what to expect and how to game the system.

Apple Cinnamon crepes to die for. I suggest giving yourself a few moments to really savor that first bite. Great ambiance, and a wonderful way to start the day. Added bonus, hearing the whistle from the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Best coffee in town. Our server, Joshua, was attentive and helpful, and the croissants homemade and worth another visit. I appreciated the attention to detail and quality in the decor.

Really love this sweet little French Bakery - we were in town for the weekend this March, and both mornings we visited for pastries and hot chocolate. We got the chocolate eclairs, cream puffs and lemon tarts (all delicious - especially the lemon tart, yummm) and the hot chocolate was pleasant as well. We didn't have any trouble with service as was mentioned in several other reviews, but we were in a leisurely mood both days and also didn't order food. Staff seems present though and we didn't wait long to be seated or served when we arrived. I like the place for its uniqueness and for the tasty sweets. We make it a point to visit on every trip to Durango and have yet to be disappointed.

While we never had time to stop in for a seated breakfast - we did stop several mornings of our Durango trip to pick up pastry for breakfast. Over a couple of mornings we sampled the Apple Tarts (crispy outside with lots of apple pieces in the filling), Chocolate Croissant (a true "french breakfast"), Cinnamon Roll (nice to have one not covered in white sugary frosting!), and Rasberry Croissant (nice filling and light flaky croissant). We'll certainly make this bakery our breakfast stop next time we're in - or around - Durango!

The food was fine, not great but good. The real disappointment was the staff. We were there for lunch on a Sunday and watched several people enter, wait by the "wait to be seated" sign and eventually leave. Hundreds of dollars of business simply walked away because there was no one there to great them. We waited and were eventually seated by one of the busy staff who gave us the impression they didn't care if we were there or not, and they didn't care if they were there either. Really too bad because this place as serious potential. Great location and totally different menu and atmosphere compared to all the other restaurants in this area.

Let's just say that I was quickly reminded of Paris' Champs Elysees Laduree... mmmmmmmmm. I'm pretty sure that that's all I need to say. Great job, Jean-Pierre!

Every part of my meal was absolutely delicious: a latte, stuffed croissant with side of fresh fruit, and some treats (chocolate drops, meringues) from the bakery. The awesome food + ambiance/decor of the restaurant made for the perfect breakfast. Our server was very nice--things were a little slow at times, but not painfully so.

Very cute place for breakfast or brunch. Food pretty good. Service the first time we visit was poor. We were also over charged for stuff we didn't get. The second time I only ordered the coffee to go and they changed the server so it seem to be okay.

Great lunch special for $16: quiche, salad or soup, pastry, although we did not find any of the pastries to be worth having a second time. We had good and fine service.

I went to get dessert and walked out when I saw that they wanted to charge nearly $7 for microscopic French "pastries." I was even more disappointed to review the menu and see that omelettes go for about $12. Talk about a tourist trap. The restaurant does look cute, but you can find other places to go.

Stopped in on a Sunday morning. We walked directly to the pastry counter and ordered a few different items. The employee was super nice and patient with us. We took our bag of treats to a seating area across the street, right next to Starbucks. I got a coffee from the 'bux, and we enjoyed a beautiful morning with our DELICIOUS pastries. I LOVE a good chocolate filled croissant, and this place nailed it. My mom had a blackberry croissant which was also tasty, and my dad had an apricot filled crunchy thing which he really liked. We shared a meringue cookie which was pretty good. The sour dough bread wasn't my favorite. It seemed more like a whole wheat sourdough, which I thought odd. If I ever go through Durango again, I will be stopping here!

Jean-Pierre (The owner of this fine establishment) is a legitimate Frenchmen, which is what makes all of their pastries, breads, and overall food so delicious and authentic. So, surprisingly it is possible to find real, good french food in the southwest corner of Colorado. My mom has taken me here for lunch on my birthday a couple years in a row, and each time I would get a roast beef sandwich. Not because I am a big fan of roast beef (I'm actually partial to turkey.. Not that that's important, haha), but because this sandwich is very close to perfection. The bread is crusty on the outside, and soft on the inside, delicious (as to be expected from a french bakery), the meat is sliced perfectly thin, the thin layer of sauce spread on the bread is wonderful, and when you take a bite its a perfect blend of flavors. MM, so good. The decor inside is adorable, it looks like a barn almost, all made up of brick and aged-looking wood. It's very old fashioned, they play on the French bakery theme a lot, and it works. Their pastries are also to die for, I've gotten their croissants and strawberry tarts a couple times and have never been disappointed, they are perfect little French pastries, meticulously made, they are so pretty you almost don't want to eat them. But you really do, because they taste great. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is their prices. There is a reason that the majority of the times I've eaten here it's been my mom's treat. It's pretty steep, and while their food is almost worth it, I'd rather not spend that much for a sandwich on a daily basis.

Durango is a surprisingly charming giant tourist trap. This place is not charming at all. The service was horribly rude and the food mediocre.

Just getting around to reviewing from past visits. It was a very cold winter night last December and I needed something hot and delicious. We walked into The Jean-Pierre bakery. We had the pleasure of meeting Jean-Pierre and his wife . My hot tea was actually nice. It was from the local tea company. I had several cups and also enjoyed a really nice slice of Chocolate cake I think it was. We stayed for a while without being rushed out for not purchasing anything else. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable. The way you would it expect it to be in a small south west town town. I heard a rumor that they have since closed down. Not confirmed though. Hope it is not true. Also, Jean-Pierre let me purchase one of their ceramic cups to take home with me. I use it all the time for my hot cocoa rum drinks.

great pastries and bread. food at the restaurant is good once you get it. which brings me to the service- basically none- at least the last time i went there- we waited for our server for 30minutes then decided to get up and leave- not all the servers fault as it looked the place was understaffed but they could have acknowledged our presence...

Breakfast is hard to find at two in the afternoon in Durango. Then we stumble upon this place. IT IS ADORABLE! it's like a french grandmothers house, but big and roomy. we sit down, and they put the breakfast menu in front of us, I am so excited to have a delicious crepe breakfast. BUT, when we order the waiter tells us that they stopped serving breakfast, and then opened the menu up to reveal the Lunch menu... crap! I sadly look it over and order the croque monsieur. It arrives on our table.... burnt... stinky. The bchamel was completely flavorless. And my water glass never got refilled... I entered this restaurant so happy and full of hope, and I left more disappointed then I ever could have imagined. The only reason it gets the 2nd star it because it is impeccably decorated.

On paper, this place is first rate- a cute french bakery/restaurant for a touch of civility in Durango? Wonderful. The interior space is nice, open and airy- a bakery section to one side and rustic wooden tables and chairs to the other for sit down dining. But the service and food don't cut it. I recently stopped in for breakfast and was disappointed on just about every front. My friend ordered an omelet- both the sausage and the cheese were left out! Sorry, but in my world, omitting cheese from an omelet is not acceptable. I ordered breakfast crepes- they arrived pale and cold, stuffed with honeydew melon (ew) with a few strawberry slices poking out the ends. My plate was obviously thrown together- a huge swoosh of strawberry juice ran from one crepe to the end of the plate. Yeah- a little thing, but I don't think it's too much to expect for a $12+ breakfast. My server never brought the lavender syrup that went with the crepes, so I sat and tried to flag somebody down. On the plus side, when I finally did and they heard of my unhappiness with the crepes they were quick to take them away- I ordered an omelet like my friend. Yep, mine came short both the ham and the cheese I'd ordered! Unbelievable. So the place tried on paper to win me over- great concept, the service tried to make right with me when they were not busy running past. But they just kept screwing up- the problems were not random, they were obviously systemic. When breakfast for 3 comes out to $60 with tip, this is unacceptable. I suppose that's the breaks for a place that probably has huge turnover in staff with the coming and goings of students and summer lifestyle inhabitants. Not this customer's problem though- next trip I'll be happier eating at the diner down the street. Extra star for the good croissant- and the apricot preserves were delightful.

Went in after reading reviews about the croissants. For $3++ I don't think they are any thing to rave over. Go down the street to the Bean and save $1 and get a better sandwich.

Came here for the live music and it was really beautiful - mostly classical and jazzy stuff with some fun tunes mixed in. I believe it was a Saturday night and I think they said they've got live music every Saturday. On this night the band consisted of a bassist, pianist, drummer, and excellent trumpet player! However there were very few people there, and most were obviously not interested in the band. It was really too bad because they were awesome! Because we just wanted to listen to music we only ordered a bottle of wine. Imagine our delight to learn every bottle comes with a free basket of bread (with as many refills as you want) and a free fruit and cheese plate! We had planned to go elsewhere for dinner but two bottles of wine and therefore two cheese plates in my party of five were stuffed! It was the best deal ever! The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is because I haven't actually eaten here beyond the cheese. They had some interesting looking pastries and the meals being served around me looked great. But I just can't vouch for them. Next Saturday night you should consider some wine and cheese at Jean-Pierre!

So we were leaving Durango for a picnic, and a trip to Mesa Verde, and want to get some bread to go with the rest of our food. So they open early (I had seen the hours when we ate at the Strater the night before) and thought of this place. So we arrived and went in for bread and oh no! No bread! I looked at the tarts and they looked like to die for!!! and had just finished a good breakfast, So I passed and walked out front. Well up pulls the trunk with all the bread you could imagine and warm and fresh out of the oven! It was Fantastic. Come to this place and if you are too early, have a coffee and a tart and be patient, it is really worth it!

Love the old building. Whoever the guy is who is running the place has excellent service. The pastries are very good. Also, all of the espresso drinks we tried were great. I highly recommend this place.

croissants were bland, eggs benedict undercooked, coffee gave me a stomach ache, staff was rude and uncaring and incompetent. they try to make their pastries look good in the window but trust me, it's all show and no substance. The dining room, although lovely decorated, is dusty and unkempt and smells. The staff looks and acts like they would rather be anywhere else. You basically have to buss your own table. Oh, and at a cool $4 for a croissant and $16 for eggs benedict, the cost is definitly NOT worth the meal. Try anywhere else for breakfast and don't waste your time.

Summary: Great pastries, terrible service. Jean Pierre believes in hiring untrained, underpaid help So the service here ALWAYS sucks. But the food can be fabulous. Are you willing to suffer a place that's perpetually understaffed with young women with little or no waitstaff experience? Waiting forever to be seated, waiting for the food, and then waiting AGAIN for the bill? AND, he starts out the day with an empty cash register. So you go in just to buy a croissant (the best anywhere, IMHO) and the cashier has to dig around in her OWN purse to give you change. Day, after day, after day. I want to scream! If you eat a croissant, and aren't covered in flakes, it's not a croissant. Do you want some soft, foam-bread imitation, or a REAL french croissant? Honestly, I'd strangle this guy if he wasn't the best french baker around.

Delicious croissants, FRESH orang juice, tremendous bacon keishe, even half-decent coffee! Avoid the "Famous" eggs benedict. Servers are a little odd, but the food speaks for itself. I highly recommend this place for breakfast.

Very disappointed. We went on a Sunday hoping to have a nice Sunday brunch but they stopped serving the breakfast menu at 11:30. We stayed to try the lunch menu because we had friends in town who liked the atmosphere. I do think it is a bit overpriced for what they offer and for portion sizes. The crab and lobster bisque was thin and lacked ingredients (couldn't make out crab or lobster) and flavor. The quiche was ok but greasy. 2 people on our part had the Croque Monsieur (fancy ham sandwich with processed ham) on lackluster bread. And Jean Pierre has such good sourdough bread! We all had coffee with our meal and also a disappointment. Lukewarm, weak, and tasted like it had been sitting in the pot for awhile. We had high hopes for the coffee since we were told by the waiter they serve Desert Sun coffee! I remember this restaurant being much better than this experience (but that was a very long time ago). What happened???

I heart Durango. Very cute, western downtown. This bakery smelled and looked delicious. Really, I can't express how good it smelled. The bread we received upon sitting down was probably the best bread I've had in Colorado because it was actually crusty. I love a good bowl of French onion soup, and based on how legit this place looked, I was pretty excited about ordering a bowl here. Now I'm not going to claim to be an expert on French cooking. I just know that every bowl of French onion soup I've had in these United States has been made with beef broth, with the gruyere or other swiss cheese slightly crusty on top, and with a chunk of bread floating around inside. Not so here. This soup was made with chicken broth, the cheese was not crusty, the onions weren't really soft, and there was no delicious bread floating around. I'm not going to say it wasn't tasty, because it was. Just not what I expected. I'd still buy a loaf of bread there any day.

Oui Oui! based on the Au-jus sandwich I ordered for lunch. Also the decor is tres bien- sprung wood flooring, exposed brick, and beamed ceilings! Also, the wine room looked mighty bourgeois. my salad was petite-- the bathroom mirror was not. :) Let's french.

You can rant about globalization all you want, but there's something nice about good crusty bread and delicious French pastries in Durango. We had a baguette and a pastry to go, and both were excellent. Prices are on the high end, but hey, we weren't in Trifoullis-les-Oies or some other French village ;)

We were relieved to finally find a bakery that wasn't turning out dreck in the Rocky Mtns. We were on our way to mountain biking and did not sit down for breakfast, we ordered pastry and left. This seemed to be non-standard behavior, they are set up for seated breakfast; the dining room hostess is also the counter person on a Wednesday morning. My son ordered the chocolate tart, basically ganache in a pastry shell. I sampled it, and it was outstanding and worth every penny. The commenter who complained about prices should try making decent french pastry some time, it's laborious and there are no economies of scale in a small mtn town. My chocolate croissant was fair, certainly not top 10 but not a disappointment (I'm on a mission to uncover the finest chocolate croissants, see my other reviews.). Not-quite flakey crumb; excellent dark chocolate (could use a bit more); nice butter flavor. Not bready/chewy/greasy like horrible croissants. My dear one had an apricot pastry, same pastry as my croissant but with apricot compote. I sampled it, and it was as good if not better than mine. This pastry would be excellent with their ham/cheese croissant, btw. We didn't sample bread, but the Durango Sourdough looked great; I had a quick daydream that made JP part of my daily rounds if I lived in Durango. The interior is beautiful, exposed bricks and beams and original hardwood floors in a 100 yr old storefront on Durango's main drag. Quite clean and light. The bakers can be seen down a long hallway, pounding and kneading the dough. When we were out riding, we saw the JP panel truck making deliveries, I assume that they do contract baking for some of the stores and restaurants around town. Anyone know?

  • Ken P.

My wife and I have been to JP's a couple of times before I had a Yelp account and would have given them 4 stars. But today, news years eve which they were open, we waited 5 minutes for a table. Then the nice bus boy got us waters and then we waited 10 minutes for someone to even acknowledge we were there. Nothing. We waited 5 minutes before we walked with the hostess not even daring to look us in the eyes! Not a word was said as we walked out. I expected better and shame on JP's. I guess I did save $45 for my NYE dinner.

My husband and I got a loaf of bread here. It was fantastic...the best bread I've had outside of France. Chewy crust...yummm! Then we went back to get another loaf. It was easily day-old, and it wasn't marked as such, which was a big disappointment. We sat at the wine bar and chatted with the bartender. The wine-by-the-glass list is short, but interesting and underpriced. $5/glass wine was a nice break. We took a look at the dinner menu and thought it was *really* expensive....$23-35 per entree...so we didn't eat there given the previous reviews. If you can mess up crepes and a croque monseuir, I didn't want to chance trout or steak.
