Bartenders are rude. They walk right past you and will not even get you a drink! Not sure how this dump is still in business.

My boyfriend and I went to Zanzibar for the first time last Saturday and had a great time. The long island special was good and definitely worth $6. I love that the well vodka is smirnoff and not something like aristocrat where you wake up feeling like death after drinking it. I think the well rum was captain, which is awesome. The owner is a really nice, fun guy. He walked behind the bar with dozens of roses and started handing them out to all the girls. He gave me a really pretty one and it was something I will definitely remember; I never ever seen a bar hand out flowers for free. The fact that he gave out roses will bring me back to Zanzibar for sure. Also, there was a decent sized, young crowd (mostly 20s and lower 30s). Overall I had a really good time.

Watched Zanzibar's Bar Rescue episode, "Empty Pockets," a few days ago. I make it a habit to check the Yelp reviews for the made over bar at the end of every episode to see how the bars did after Jon Taffer left. When I went to search for "Solids and Stripes" I was surprised to see that the owner didn't keep the name change and stuck with Zanzibar, which is both confusing and carries with it a bad reputation, as witnessed by my girl friend's rolling eyes when I mentioned I wanted to go check the place out. I was also surprised that there were no "Post Bar Rescue" Yelp reviews so I knew I had to go to see for myself at some point. We rarely go downtown these days so I figured it might be quite some time before I could go check it out but as luck would have it we had a birthday party to go to that Friday night at The Ginn Mill, which is literally across the street from Zanzibar. After the party wound down we headed over to check out Zanzibar at about 12:30am. The first thing I noticed was a drink board on the sidewalk advertising obnoxiously cheap drink specials, which is great, but was one of the issues Jon Taffer had with the place from the get go, which is that the owner is practically giving away his booze. As we are ID'd by the doorman a couple smoking on the patio randomly starts talking to me about Bar Rescue, and they inform me that the owner is still up to his old ways of giving away mass quantities of booze... this should be interesting. Once we walk inside the first thing my girlfriend notices is the smell, "OMG! It stinks like Casa Bonita in here!" We're not exactly off to a great start... We were shocked at how few people were in the bar on a Friday night especially considering the bar we just came from was uncomfortably packed from wall to wall, and it's probably 3-4 times the size of Zanzibar. So we take our pick of the many open seats at the bar. We were greeted instantly by a cute, young bartender. I decided to order something off their new drink menu and went with "The Break," mostly because it was $4.25. My girlfriend, who rarely ventures out of her Bacardi & Diet comfort zone, decided to order a Moscow Mule. Which was quickly shot down when the bartender informed us that they only had one copper cup in the entire bar, and she was unsure where it was. She then goes back to the old standby of Bacardi & Diet as she looks to me and wryly says, "Jon Taffer would not be amused." No, no he wouldn't. However my drink, The Break, which is Iced Cake Vodka, OJ & pineapple juice was outstanding and incredibly refreshing after a long night of bourbon and sprite! Queue the owner, he is frantically running around the bar looking for someone to bestow free drinks upon. "Where's the Birthday Girl!?!" he bellows. Once he finds her he pops a champagne bottle with a kitchen knife and empties the entire bottle into about 8-10 glasses. Total Bar Rescue Deja Vu. Maybe if he didn't give away so much booze he could buy another copper cup so my girlfriend could have her beloved Moscow Mule. The drunk munchies crept up on me so I decided to order something, the bartender informs me that the kitchen is closing in 5 mins so I have to order ASAP, so I went with the meatballs. Meatballs show up and they were cold, I guess the kitchen really did close... As we walked out the owner was doing a magic trick for a pretty girl out on the sidewalk, Bar Rescue Deja Vu times two! Bottom line is this bar has really cheap drinks and pretty nice bartenders, but besides that it is pretty pathetic and there is nobody to blame but the absent minded, if not affable, owner. You can't really beat the location, The Ginn Mill is absolutely crushing across the street and it is nothing special, it's just run by someone who knows what they're doing, and the professionalism shows, just as the lack thereof does at Zanzibar. If you want cheap drinks and to shoot a little pool downtown, Zanzibar is the place for you, if you are looking for a little more from your evening, keep on looking.

I dropped by for happy hour to get a okay price on beer and free Billiards. Service from the bartenders was okay, the regulars seemed kind of cold, but hey, free Billiards!

Great little pool hall and bar. When the Retro Room was absolutley packed during the Santa Claus Pub Crawl, we opted to get a beverage here instead. I'm so glad we did. The daily special was a $6 Long Island Iced Tea that was delicious (and dangerous). The place was a bit dead, but our group livened up the place a bit ;) There were lots of pool tables available. And, the decor was really interesting, eclectic in a very funky and fun way. I will definitely back with some pool playing friends in tow. This is a great, laid back bar where we can kick back with some beverages and not take ourselves too seriously.

It was the perfect place to sit down with a double vodka, a plate of wings, a bad attitude and an iPhone--whereupon I proceeded to text the living hell out of someone. Good times.

Interesting mixed reviews from other Yelpers. I stopped by here for the first time on Saturday night. Promoter Ryan Dykstra had a little VIP area and invited myself and some of the DJ's from Twenty42 Entertainment out to shoot some billiards. LOUD music from DJ with a decent sound system kept the energy going. Lots of billiard tables (not pool- there is a difference people!!) What REALLY makes this place unique is the HOT TUB in front of the DJ booth!! What a great idea!! I will be back to check out the food and barstaff another time soon.

I really want to like Zanzibar! THE PLUSES: +A pinball machine. Yes, keep it old school. +Lots of well maintained pool tables. +The kitchen - good food- slow but delicious and fresh +A nice environment, good aesthetics including the pretty bartenders. + A hot tub, yes really, bring your bikini and briefs. THE MINUSES: -They don't watch the door sand sketchy street people wander in. I had two skeezers try to sell me drugs and were slightly intimidating. The young naive bartender saw these guys come in and should have been more alert. -I am new to town and looking to be someones regular patron. But they aren't friendly here. I heard the owner or manager giving directions to the bartenders, but he never said hello to the patrons. The bartenders are quick with a plastic smile, but won't talk or chat at all. (Just the opposite happens at their competition, Herb's, across the street) Zanzibar gets a lot of things right, but if you don't feel welcome, its all moot.

I imagine this place would be much more enjoyable on a weekday afternoon than a Saturday night. Went there to shoot pool while in Denver. It was packed with a bunch of loud ass kids, and we could hardly get a shot in without having to either bump our cue sticks into someone's ass or ask multiple people to move. Too loud to have a decent conversation. Apparently they had free pool up until 7pm but we arrived at 7:30 and paid $10/hr. Not bad, but I would definitely go somewhere more chill next time. If you want to be around a ton of obnoxious young dudes, then this is your place.

  • Lorrie V.

It would be nice if the young bar tender, "tended" to us. I understand she is young but when you offer a shuffle board you expect a working shuffle board. But if not and it doesn't work we would just like a little " I'm sorry it doesn't work right now and blah blah blah" not just look at you and just walk away. Rude! I understand you can't have fun but loosen up a little and you might enjoy your job! Thanks but no thanks. Sorry for the rant... But other then the above, good bar billiards and nice open space. Drinks just bar drinks nothing grand.

This is an interesting pool hall hangout spot that seems to have an identity crisis. It either needs to decide to become a grown-up Chuck-E-Cheese and commit to it or aim for a higher-paying crowd and make an effort to draw people in. There are pool tables everywhere: that I expected. Then there is air hockey. And shuffleboard. And hunting video games. And god knows what else. Then there are the "throw a shot down my throat and dare me to puke" barber chairs clustered against the wall. The beer selection is good, but the bartender knew nothing about them so I had to play Colorado Roulette with the taps. The bar also had some rather out-of-place lighting on and under it that would seem to indicate a nicer environ than the frat child playground that the venue seemed to have dissolved into. I heard there was a Bar Rescue shot here. I would never in a million years have guessed.

I've had a pretty good time every time I have been here. My husband and I are in walking distance and we have popped in at various hours and have had a different experience, but none of them bad. If you come during peak weekend hours you're probably going to have to wait for a table. The drink prices are very reasonable though, and you can play as long as you want for free! They seem to have a pretty diverse crowd, which I like. It also seems to be a pretty chill crowd for LoDo - pre-10pm on Fri/Sat anyway. Judging by the owner's comment further down, they also appear to be veteran-friendly, which makes them even better in my eyes! Fun place worth a visit if you just want to relax with a beer and play pool for a while.

this bar is okay. i know it was on an episode of bar rescue and people find the novelty in that. i know zanzibar has been in denver for a long time now, but i feel that it has the potential to hold better standards for itself. it didn't feel very clean or very well maintained. i like that there are a lot of pool tables to use and the drink prices are pretty cheap. the drinks that were created for the bar are good. considering this place is around a few other bars, this probably wouldn't be my top choice. more of a stop in place to play a game of pool, have a drink, and then move on to the next place. the employees didn't seem very enthused about being there. i know its hard to work in a place when its dead, but when customers do come in, show them that you're stoked for them to be there and give them an awesome experience!

Three stars for the awesome staff and clean bathroom... I'd give about one star for the drinks, though. And these drinks were apparently designed by some guy with his own TV show? The whole bar was redesigned by this guy? I don't know who he is, and I don't care to find out. The drinks are completely uninspired and the feel of the place is nothing special. They do offer free pool as long as you're drinking, so that's cool. They've also got a dartboard and air hockey. Not a terrible place to spend an afternoon, but not the best either.

This was an unexpected fun spot on a spontaneous night out. The people were friendly, the bartender was nice enough (although it took a while to get anyone's attention, even early in the night), and it was pretty clean. I enjoyed my drinks, although it's pretty hard to mess up a vodka/soda. Ladies! There are TWO bathroom locations. There was a line for the one women's stall, so I defeatedly began to walk away. A staff member caught my attention and told me there was another ladies room around the corner. Thank you sir! I enjoyed playing some pool with new friends we met at the bar, and onlookers joined in the rivalry. A fun place to get the night started, and aptly located to hop somewhere else.

On a recent date night Sir Nicholas and I decided it had been long enough since we challenged one another to a friendly game of pool and not really wanting to deal with any crowds (it was about 8 pm on a Wednesday) we decided to give Zanzibar a shot. It was definitely un-crowded - there were at least half a dozen tables open. And there was only one bartender working as far as I could tell. We got our balls and drinks from the bartender and picked an open table to play on. For about two hours and two drinks a piece our tab was under $20. I think they must not have been charging for pool tables during the time we were there, which may have made this the cheapest date Nick and I have been on. If you are looking for a pretty casual place to play a game of pool or grab a standard drink Zanzibar on a Wednesday night is a good spot to try.

Horrible service, horrible everything! The guy at the door was the nicest person in the place. No wonder why they failed on Bar Rescue. Lol. The girls working behind the bar should lessen the attitude, nothing special.

No service. Pool is expensive. The atmosphere would be good but ruined by door guys and high pool prices. This could be a great place but it's being run into the ground. It's pretty much worthless. Get a quick drink here when everyone else is busy.

Came here last night and I really wasn't to happy about anything. The people behind the bar were kind of rude and the drinks they made weren't good at all. The pool is WAY too expensive at $10/hr! There are plenty of bars in the area that the pool tables cost $1 a game! I will not be returning to this bar and cant recommend it to anyone unless they don't mind being over charged for crap drinks

Back in Kansas City we saw this place in Bar Rescue so we decided to visit. I'm sorry we wasted the money. There were a bunch of older men there, made me feel like my dad would meet friends there to play pool. Got our drinks, I ordered 'The Break' and it honestly tasted like nothing. It had Smirnoff iced cake vodka, pineapple and orange juice, but still it tasted so bland. We decided to play some pool (it was free) and the first table we played on wasn't level. Moved to another table and played another game but them we decided to leave, nothing worth staying for.

This is a great place to get drinks and a small bite. The bartenders are tentative and fast with orders. It's a spacious bar, so you don't have to worry about it getting crowded and not being able to find a spot to hang out. It's cool that they have pool tables so you can hang out and play.

Ohhhh Zanzibar. Pool tables + random bar eats + loud music + decent drink specials + fun staff & awesome owner + a million holiday themed parties hosted here each year which feature an actual bubbling hot tub in the middle of the bar area + my drunk ass getting talked into "drinking for free" if I got into the hot tub wearing only my bra and panties = HOLY....FUN, CRAZY, WILD. **I have not returned since this random occasion on St Patty's day 4 years ago. awkward.**

Went here on a Wednesday, and even with a Rockies game going on, we didn't have a problem finding a metered parking space a short distance away. The place wasn't exactly busy but it wasn't dead either and had zero problem with getting a drink at the bar. The pool tables were OK, some nicer than others. played about 5 rounds of pool. Drinks were reasonably priced, and loved the outdoor patio area on Larimer Street with a small fence around it that you could take your drink out and smoke at the same time. I'll be back.

I live in walking distance of this place and didn't realize it existed for awhile. I popped in one night between hitting the 1-up and Star Bar, and I thought it was pretty cool. I really enjoy shooting pool, but I got a little confused about the tables. The bartender told me they were pay by the hour. Seems like people are saying they're free if you're drinking, but I wouldn't count on that. I thought the atmosphere was pretty cool. There were a ton of people dressed up in weird costumes and I thought it matched the decor. I'll probably head back up there sometime in the afternoon and figure out what's going on with the pool tables and what shape they're in. If the pool tables are decent, I'll be hanging there a bit. I don't think there are a whole lot of places to shoot pool downtown, maybe just this and Wynkoop.

This was our first stop in a bachelor bar hop last weekend and it was fine. Your typical downtown bar with billiards. We just ordered a pitcher of Coors and we're served quickly.

I can't imagine how it was worse before Bar Rescue. I was trying to think of how to categorize this bar... Divey came to mind, but with a "Dick's Last Resort" attitude. Uggh.

I have only been here during the week to have a few relaxing afternoon beers but have been satisfied every time and come down when I can. Free pool Monday-Friday is nice, and they have $3 domestics on happy hour(s) (long happy hours). Their chairs at the bar are comfortable and they have a good full bar selection. Their food is good (burgers and fries I have tried) and their staff is a friendly. During the day hours when I am here the bar tenders have all been nice and polite, giving you privacy to watch the tv, is talkative if you want to get into conversation and always have a fresh drink when requested. My 4 stars and not 5 stars lay with the "unfinishedness" of the bar. It's something I personally love but could see where some would woe. (Back light bottle lights not working, open and confusing feel to kitchen and bathroom) if you can over see these small flaws you will be opened to a great bar staff at great prices with a friendly regular crowd that greets with open arms.

Finally wandered into this bar after years of passing by, not giving it a second thought. It was a Friday happy hour and the places had just a few patrons in it. Lots of pool tables and it gets lively on weekend nights but I enjoyed just hanging here wit ha buddy during happy hour. The Stars and Stripes menu of drinks was pretty interesting and we tried out quite a few of them. IT is a fun gimmick and the drinks are pretty good. The bar tenders were a lot of fun and we ended up talking to them for a long time. Didn't realize how long we were in this place but I started walking home around 8:45pm. This is a good spot to grab a drink after work or play some pool. Probably won't be my go-to spot but it is a good place to stop by once in a while.

I have visited here multiple times in the past few months on week nights and weekends. No matter how busy or slow, the service is anything but speedy or stellar. My last experience on a Saturday night I waited with a friend at the bar for about twenty minutes to order drinks and food. We made our presence known to the bartender multiple times. Then, the moment when she was free... Oh yeah it was time for the late nite food and drinks we were craving! Oh wait... She walked right past and took an order from the gentleman that walked up behind us two minutes ago! The atmosphere is confusing. The drinks are cheap... and I don't mean price wise. The bartenders are slow and rude. The food I can't comment on because I have never been able to order. The only thing this place has going for it is the free pool. Such a shame. I live on Larimer and its nice to be able to walk to cool bars. Unfortunately for Zanzibar, I will continue walking on by!

I've walked by this place on numerous occasions. We figured we'd wander in, check it out & split. Well... that didn't go as planned. We had so much fun we stayed a solid hour playing free pool & enjoying decently priced drinks. The music was great which is always a bonus. That's a big feat to occupy my time like that with sooo many other options downtown. We''ll definitely be back.

I can't hate this place but it is less than stellar. No white wine, no cranberry juice for drinks and service is meh at best. On the other hand, beer is cheap and they gave us free play on the shuffleboard table. However the shuffleboard table us so bad (uneven and not level) you wouldn't pay to play on it. Maybe the pool tables are better. Might try it again sometime.

Went here the other night for my birthday. While it was not the worst place I've ever been to, I was not terribly impressed. The place is still named Zanzibar even after the bar rescue where they changed it to "solids and stripes". That's would be just fine if not for all the "solids and stripes" signs still around, it's a bit confusing to me. There was not a lot of people there which was nice. We knew we were going to have to wait a few minutes for drinks, and on a Friday night that is totally okay. First of all there was only 2 bartenders, not enough on a busy night as far as I'm concerned. We waited patiently, but after the bartender skipped us twice to serve to groups who I had seen come well after us, I had to say something. She finally acknowledged us, and we got out drinks. I had a beer which was fine, my wife ordered a cocktail, and she said it was not all that great. I then asked the bartender how the pool tables worked, and if we could get on a waiting list. She replied "oh people play for hours, I have no idea." She then told me I would just have to wait for someone to bring a rack of balls back up, and maybe then I could get them. For a place that claims to be a billiards bar, I was very disappointed at this. All in all we made it a good night, but better bar service, better drinks, and a better system for pool would have made a good night in a great night.

Just like most people, after watching bar rescue and passing through Denver, I decided I was going to take a peak and watch the crazy owner run around and get way to excited (as he was shown on tv) I was expecting the place to be chaos, when in reality, I was welcomed with a 'hey' and a smile by a hot barmaid, and asked what I wanted. Almost instantly, it was sitting in front of me... Super speedy service. We ordered food, and within 10-15 minutes, I was enjoying it greatly. The place has been changed since bar rescue, but in my opinion it looks great. After the staff had finished with there shift, they came to talk to us and hung out for a bit. Very nice, friendly and sexy bar staff. I got a chance to talk to the owner and I was expecting a crazy man, when in fact he's very polite, welcoming friendly and I'm looking forward to seeing that place again soon on my next visit through Denver. 100% recommend this place!

Work in bar management industry and watch Bar Rescue all the time and happen to be in denver so stopped in on a Tuesday. Wasn't kept in the best of shape... dangling cords, tape on walls, dirty bathroom etc. Ordered one of the bar rescue cocktails "the scratch" from a slightly unwelcoming tender which was made wrong and didn't taste fresh. Best thing about the space was the custom ambient lights and art made from the tv show and the sound. Decent for a billiards I guess. Wouldn't be a watering hole for me if I lived here

Hit this place up after missing my layover. Had spent the entire flight watchin' Taffer turn the screws on my iPad, so I was real geared up. Flying into Denver is mega scary; there's tons of turbulence over the Rockies. The Indian dude sitting next to me blew chunks everywhere, which was so gross. Delta gave me 300 bonus miles as compensation, so I guess it was a net positive. The airport itself contains some of the most disturbing decor you'll ever see. It feels like it was designed by a team of scientists from the USSR. Maybe they should hire Taff-dogg to redo the place? Got to Zanzibar after a 45 minute drive from the airport. Paid like $100 for the cab, so I hustled on the pool table to win it back. Told everyone I was a beginner (I used to play on the amateur circuit), so I fleeced a few guys real good. After about 5 games the regulars got pretty pissed off, and I got kicked out. Drank at some dive across the street with my winnings. Anyhow, Denver is a pretty cool city assuming you don't mind some above-average turbulence when making your approach.

So I went to Zanzibar with a couple of co-workers for our Snow Day Happy Hour. They had $2.50 domestics and half-price FRIED appetizers. They also had specials on well drinks, I think $5 for a double. Also, free pool if you were drinking, which we were. The bartender Sarah was the star of the show that day. Not only was she really, really attractive (the guys were so happy) but she was really nice. My co-worker took my purse into the bathroom (so as not to leave it at an empty table) and unbeknownst to either of us, dropped my wallet in there. 15 minutes later we see the bartender walking up to us with my wallet in her hands, she handed it back to me and said she found it and recognized me from the picture. All the cash and everything was still in there. I was so happy and surprised and lucky. I will be returning. Thank you, Sarah.

Stopped in here on a relatively drama-free, (ok, I'm lying - high drama, drunkards sitting stupified in ice puddles and guys playing eukelele's in their cars) We were trying to go to the Irish joint next door, but apparently Irishmen close early on Sundays. So, Zanzibar it was...there was all of one customer. He was the bartenders boyfriend. A couple other people rolled in later in the night, service at the bar was good and we wound up getting the thought of the stupified drunkard out of our heads and the sound of eukelele's. Oh, the hot tub has left the building...or at least it had on this particular night.

For no real reason, we wandered into Zanzibar looking for the basics: beer at a bar. Decent bar with an average selection of beers and plenty of pool tables. Not too far from Coors Field, so it could serve as a pre or post game hangout spot. But they also have a hot tub. Smack dab in the middle of their "dance floor" is a hot tub. Yes, a hot tub. The occupants were 8 horny dudes in baseball caps and a dumpy gal in a sports bra. I've never walked into a bar and thought: "hey, this joint needs a HOT TUB". But somebody else has. I don't think the place needed a hot tub and it gave off a ghetto vibe. Nobody brings their swimsuit to a bar, so I was kinda' repulsed at seeing drunk people in their undies climbing in and out. Sure, chlorine is added to the tub, but I could imagine the occupants also added their own brand of "chemicals". And here I thought public pools were full of scary stuff.

I saw Zanzibar on an episode of "Bar Rescue". I had to check this place out for myself especially after watching this show. Right as I walked in, I was really amazed with the interior decorations. The LED lights all over the place really brightens it up. I was impressed. The bartenders greeted me with a smile and not only were they very attractive, but they were extremely kind as well. It was happy hour (11am-7pm). The drinks were extremely cheap. ($2-$6 range) Can't complain about that. I don't understand why this place has been given bad reviews. I enjoyed my time there. Cheap drinks, hot bartenders, and free pool. Why wouldn't I love this place? And we met the owner too. Ami, I think was his name. He was very nice and actually bought us a round of shots. I give Zanzibar 5/5 stars. Great service, atmosphere, and an overall fun bar to be at. I will definitely be coming back!

Stopped by this place for a couple drinks and a few games of pool. There are daily drink specials and as long as you are eating or drinking, you get to play on one of their many nice pool tables for free. The bartender was very nice and had great service - the bar has great happy hour specials too until 7pm! The food wasn't bad either. I would definitely go back again for a laid back day or night.

If you like free pool and decent drink prices this is the place. Come early for pool though cause you won't be able to play til later, if any at all. The bartenders are decent, sometimes responsive but of course being a woman, they're slow to serve unless you're a guy. Overall, with the atmosphere and all, guess it isn't too horrible if you're looking for a good time and some pool with friends.

I am not sure why this place gets some of these low ratings. It is a bar - free pool, good bartenders, decent prices and surprisingly good food. What else are they expecting?

Cool decor, but what a dump. We were the only people in the place for lunch, and I can see why. They shouldn't even bother if they're going to do a crap job. Everything originated in the freezer and a couple of items were still frozen in the middle. The woman who took our order was on the phone the entire time behind the bar. Never checked on our table, had to go to the bar to request water, more drinks, and then a check. This location must be cursed, because businesses come and go, and nobody makes it work. Zanzibar is a big fail.

This place is A-OK for a couple reasons. I came here during a recent vacation to Denver and we were looking for somewhere to play pool while downtown. We decided to go here based on the "yelp" offer. After we had already ordered our first drink. We brought the yelp offer up and the bartenders had no idea what we were talking about and were not very friendly regarding the whole situation. I'm assuming the kitchen was closed, It was about 9pm and we did not see anything that looked like food or a menu anywhere around. We continued to drink a few pitchers and play pool and enjoy ourselves for a while. The smoking area outside is nice with patio seats, the only problem we had was the copious amount of transients that kept walking by and asking for something. Interesting note...... the place has a jacuzzi. what?..

1st stopping ground for a night of drinks. Due to the rainy weather yesterday, it wasn't busy which was ok since I was looking for a low key night with drinks & music. They had free pool which was pretty nice. However my friend isn't much of a pool player, but i know where to go for next time. The bartenders were nice, my favorite bartender i told her she resembled Ivanka Trump ;) They serve food but since we ate before we got there we didn't try anything. Good place to visit.

Pool, Pinball, Darts. Oh yeah, drinks and food, too. Zanzibar is a newly opened billiards bar and eatery in the neighborhood near Coors Field. They have a bunch of pool tables (I didn't count, but I think there were at least 8 if not 10), a dart board, a pinball (Ripleys Believe It or Not), and even a piano that you might or might not want to play, depending on your ability and level of inebriation. The tables are all full size and everything looks brand new (cue sticks, balls, tables, etc.) The drinks started off weak, but when a new bar mistress took over, suddenly the pours were strong and my pool abilities grew weak. The food menu is a little deceiving. There are some standard bar fare choices, but also some not so standard items like kabobs and a quarter of a rotisserie chicken. That chicken sounds delicious from the description on the menu, and I look forward to giving it a try. For me, I had to try out the burger since they claim to grind their beef fresh daily. I had the American Hero burger which comes with cheese, bacon, and BBQ sauce as well as the other standard toppings and fries. The fries were standard fare, thick sliced steak fries. Nothing to write home about, but to be fair, I ate all of them. The burger itself was good, but not great. The problem for me is that they add too much of their own seasoning to the meat, almost like meatloaf. Even over the seasoning, I could taste that their ground beef makes a very flavorful burger. They should really focus on bringing that flavor out with simple seasonings like kosher salt and fresh ground pepper. Maybe a dash of onion powder. That's it. Follow that overseasoning with overcooking, and I was underwhelmed by a burger that had a ton of promise in my eyes. I also shared some Chicken Egg Rolls with my friends, and they were pretty good. Hot and crispy when they came out, and still tasty 20 minutes later when I had the last one. All in all, I enjoyed hanging out at Zanzibar. They have some good grand opening specials, an attractive happy hour (11 -7 daily), nice pool tables in a wide open space, and a menu of food items that I'd like to try. It's A-OK!

I enjoy this place because there are lots of pool tables and with food it is free. Great area downtown and the food is pretty good as well. A+

I don't know what we were thinking. We saw the place on Bar Rescue, but from some of the yelp reviews, it sounds like things hadn't changed much. My boyfriend and I aren't the downtown type, but wanted to give it a shot anyway. After work, we headed down there for happy hour. Walking in, we noticed a ton of drunks lounging around - the same drunks you see asking for money on the street. Still, we were willing to give this place a try because they advertised darts on their website, and we love a good game of darts. Lo and behold, no dart boards in this place. Talk about false advertising. My boyfriend isn't a drinker but will enjoy an NA sometimes. Bartender let us know that besides not having darts, they also don't have games, or any NA beers. We looked around one last time, and didn't see much reason to stay. They didn't have what we wanted, and it wasn't really the group we were hoping to share a bar with either. No thanks, Zanzibar.

Stopped by this place for a couple drinks and pool. Was not very crowded for a Monday night (as expected). The bartender was very attentive and had great service - the bar has great happy hour specials too until 7pm! Obviously there is an abundance of pool tables which were mostly all open that night. I would definitely go back again for a laid back night.

A hidden gem on Larimer. I ordered the Italian beef...it was HUGE ! I was starving, yet could only barely eat half. I think they used nearly a full loaf of french bread to construct my sammich. It had a combination of thinly-sliced beef, fresh cucumbers, red peppers, and provolone cheese. And sauce. I did not pay much attention to what the sauce was made of....but it was good ! There are lots of tables and a great juke box, and a gigantic air hockey table. Open and inviting, I fully intend to return here for billiards and beer and a night of fun in the near future.

I'm a professional athlete and I play billiards and snooker seriously. I came to this place due to bar rescue and was looking for a good pool hall in Denver. And I've been here 3 times between Sept and Oct 2013. PS: If this is John Taffer's work in "remodeling", I have to say it's pretty sad. *Staff* The only person I had to deal with was a thin man who has slightly longer hair and he seems unmotivated and unhappy, which makes me feel a little unwelcome and it tells me that the place isn't doing great financially or the owner isn't treating him right. I don't drink, so I don't have the personal encounter with the bartenders. *Food* 3 out of 3 times, I actually think the food here is 4 stars. So is the plating as well as pricing. Doesn't taste like frozen food at all and I hope that is truly the case. You normally find this good of food in a higher class pool hall or place. So it's a little contrast. *Pool hall atmosphere* I like the table near the window, it has plenty of space, the ones by the wall you'll have no space for the cue stick. This place feels like it can and has the potential to be a lot better, better decor, better quality, better atmosphere and slightly cleaner. Zanzibar truly has the potential to be a 1st class pool hall in downtown Denver. But for some reason they chose it to be the typical bar scene that attracts some typical patrons. Sometimes I wonder why it's so empty and the decor / furniture doesn't compliment that of a nice pool hall as well as they lack furniture. I think they need to hire a pool hall designer to help them with this. And yes, I know, because I have been to several real upscale pool halls and was a member at a big one back home. I feel that the owner wants it to be a great place, but perhaps he's just lost as to what to do to make it happen. *Tables* They have nice tables, 9 of 10 tables are actually very clean and don't have food or beer stain and they don't look old at all, which is what I like. They also roll true, so no flaw on the flat surface. Balls will curve and spin true. They just need to fix some of the holes on the pockets on a couple of the back tables. I was there during Oct fest around 3-5pm and there was this group of disrespectful, loud, drunk, crude trouble makers who not only brought McDonalds food from outside but ended up spilling beer all over the table. He was kicking the table, chairs and cussing at the staff. I almost throw him out myself, because the staff didn't do anything, which I think is a little sad. If it were my establishment, I'd have banned them from coming back because it'll affect my other customers and give the place a bad name as well as attract the wrong people, AND I'd have charged them for damaging my property. *Final thoughts* Maybe I'm expecting too much out of a bar, but it hurts to see a place that can be a 4to5 star being wasted like this. Total waste of potential. I only gave this place a 2 star because of the above, but I will still come back here and hopefully have a better experience. I want to be a regular at a classy 1st class pool hall / bar which this place can become if they work hard at it. Because nothing beats being able to be here from lunch to late dinner, eating and drinking, focusing on my game techniques without being worried about the hourly pool rate. Let's hope in the near future I'll change the 2 star rating to 4 or even 5 stars.

I went here for a meetup. A gentlemen gave out free apple pie shots and cheap champagne for the group, since it was so large. The cue sticks had decent tips that retained the chalk, too. I don't care for the vibe, but, for what it is, Zanzibar is just fine.

totally irresponsible staff - they lost my credit cardthat i gave them for a deposit for the billiards in an array of water glasses they keep behind the counter .... after some discussion with staff about my missing card one of them admitted that she gave my credit card to another customer with the same last name. ..... what ??? so you lost that customers card and gave him mine instead ??? Apology amounted to her telling me to call my bank and cancel the card ... bunch of dilly-dallies.
