Really cool Victorian building and MAY be a nice place to stay as a B&B, but my experience was with the dinner theater, so that's what I'll rate. Our business group had a holiday event at their mystery dinner theater and we're still all feeling a bit traumatized from the experience. It's about 5% funny & entertaining, and 95% bizarre, creepy and uncomfortable. Highlight of the evening: decent dinner & some chuckle-worthy jokes. Lowlight of the evening: forcing audience members to come up and pole-dance (I wish I was kidding).

Great Murder Mystery Dinner!!! We had our company Christmas party at the Lumber Baron Inn last night and everyone (and they're normally a tough crowd) enjoyed it. We were all Murder Mystery virgins, so we don't have much to compare it to. Most of us dressed up in 1920s outfits and I'm glad we did! While it's not required and you won't look too out of place, it makes it a little more fun :) The actors in the Murder Mystery were great, funny and all stayed in character the whole show. We laughed the whole time. Very interactive. The Set Up: Walk in and gamble with fake money (handful of table games, card tricks, etc.) while they shoot their "video" for the mystery dinner. This goes on for about an hour and they move everyone upstairs for dinner, which is buffet style. The show goes on while you're eating having each character "prove" they aren't the murderer. Each skit is engaging and people are pulled out of the crowd from each of the six tables. It sounds intimidating, but even the shyest of us enjoyed being part of the show. I get the feeling a lot of people don't know you can just go to the dinner and don't have to stay at the Inn. We started the Murder Mystery at 6 p.m. and it was about 10 p.m. when it was all said and done. Pros: Easy to get lots of drinks, great mystery, interactive/engaging, hilarious and the food was surprisingly good. Cons: It went a little long, once you walk in the door you're part of the show (no time to say hi to your group, chit chat, etc.) and loud.

Amazing place, great people. The rooms are super comfortable, and the dinner is great fun. Got an overnight room on groupon, and that made the dinner a 2 for 1 special. We will definitely be going back.

We had a great time tonight at the Murder Mystery. All actors and everyone involved was very professional, courteous, and attentive. Remember to bring cash if you want to have a few drinks, however they are very giving as far as complimentary NA drinks. The venue, effort, and mood is well set and a good use of 4 hours. There are lots of laughs and gambling with no money lost when you walk through the door. You feel very welcomed They made a great effort with the dinner but the meats were over cooked and cold. However the whole room had great spirit which more than made up for any culinary problems. They also rely on tips and when you realize what they charge versus what you get, you do want to tip out. They have been at it for 20 years and I can see why.

So, for our 34th anniversary, we stayed at the Lumber Baron Inn in Denver. I thought we deserved it, surely. It's a mystery theater hotel. We had casino night where things were totally turned around, as in Rick won and I lost my butt. It was all fake money anyway. The food was wonderful, the mystery play was not totally silly - the actors & owner were good, good people. Funny, funny time. Met some life long friends and supporters for our cause. And, it's the first time we've stayed up for New Years on a lotta years. Happy New Year everyone. And, happy anniversary to the love of my life, my best friend forever, Mr. Hoffmeister

The place looks old and creepy looking. I've heard they remodeled not too long ago. But even then i'd never stay there overnight. Looks dusty, crowded, and looks like its still in middle of being remodeled. It looks cluttered with things everywhere. They have a bar but it's cash only. Been here about three times. One of the time I had a groupon and had contacted lumber baron a month in advance to plan my event. They didn't get back to me until about three weeks - a month later. By the time the owner of lumber baron contacted me I was out of town. Even though they took a long time to respond by the time they did my voucher with groupon was expired (I do feel like it was their fault, maybe they did it on purpose) because by the time he contacted me the voucher expired...it was admission for two...I had a penalty charge. Which I paid for but it wasn't cool. 3 weeks to a month to get back to a customer who wants to book a mystery dinner? That is not in a timely manner. But at that point I just wanted to use up my groupon. The groupon I paid about $50. I was charged additional $30 because it was expired. The voucher promised t-shirts, free drinks (for me and my guest), and a souvenir...which I didn't receive any of the stuff that was promised on the voucher. They bring you to their attic...where you are then seated for dinner. They have each table go get their own food, buffet style. It is all you can eat, once everyone has gotten their food...you're welcome to go get more. The food was okay. Mediocre. I didn't expect better (I expected worst)...but it was decent enough to eat. I didn't go back for seconds though. The show was pretty entertaining (well at least one of the 3 times that I've been) the other 2 times...poor story line and acting. Always creepy guys as part of the staff popping over your shoulders. Expect to have at least one person from your party participate...in some kind of activity. First time was actually entertaining. The other two times the acting and story line and clues lost me. I don't think it is worth the money. But if you never gone, go once for the experience. If you have a groupon, make sure you use it right away. I had a little over a month left to use mines. But by the time owner emailed me back to book it...it was expired. I'm sure he did it on purpose to charged me. He has to know the voucher expires. The third time I went to took my daughter. I wanted for her to experience it. She's pretty picky but she couldn't eat any of their food. I don't think it's really for kids. I've experience it enough to know but I don't think I'll be going back whether they have specials or deals. The first time I attended was in the summer, they had us go into the back yard to hang out before dinner. Second time I attended the weather was cold, the doors were already opened and other guests were there. It was casino night so everyone got chips and tables were set up with diff table games. Third time I attended, I was about 30 mins early (but I think I was about that early the other two times also) but the doors were locked. Rang door bell but no answer, called the phone number but it went straight to voice mail. More people showed up and it got even colder and still haven't opened up the door. Finally when it was a few mins after 6pm (the event was scheduled for 6pm) they finally unlocked the doors for the poor cold people that's been waiting. I know they're a business. But I get a sense they're just all about the money and with the owner not answering back to my email til a month later...is pretty shady then making me pay a penalty. They have big plastic containers where they as for tips at the end of the show.

Oh my goodness, this place is truly wonderful, what a hidden gem! I cannot go on enough, as to we will be returning and recommending to all friends and family... We booked a last minute overnight stay on the night after Valentine's Day. The boyfriend surprised me and had found this Bed and Breakfast on Groupon. I had no idea what to expect. I was amazed at the home the moment we pulled up... Walter greeted us around 12:30 pm, I didn't hear a peep from anyone as to we were the first guests that arrived for the night. The host was sure to give us a wonderful tour with tidbits of info about the restoration, the history and rituals of the B&B. He took any special instructions and our breakfast, preferences, allergies, etc. We were brought to our upgraded suite with a view of the gardens in the rear (even beautiful in the dead of winter) and I couldn't get over how clean the whole place was for being historical. The Jacuzzi tub was beautiful and big enough for probably big enough for 3 people! Haha. Endless steaming hot water and awesome clean plumbing. We got awesome inside information from the Host on nearby restaurants, and choose a recommendation for nearby Italian, we were blown away at the price and quality. A new favorite! Slept a ton and didn't hear a peep from our oversized bed. Wonderful, quality, clean smelling sheets and towels; thick, plush and soft. We will be back. I can't get over how rested, relaxed, and recharged I am after just one night! It was the perfect romantic getaway. Breakfast was brought to our room, several types of prepared fresh fruit, warm muffins, OJ, coffee, sausage and egg soufflé. Wow. At at our little garden table and watched the snow fall in the beautiful garden. Anyone giving this place anything but 5 stars has no idea what they should expect from a B&B, and could probably never be pleased. Sad we missed a Murder Mystery Dinner, but now have something to look forward to for next visit!

What a cute and fun night! My friend found Groupons for a night of Mystery dinner here and it was a fun girls night out. Have never been to one of these and was not sure what to expect, I thought it might be like Clue or something. We started out with some friendly gamboling with chips that they gave everyone (you don't win any real money just all for fun) and two chips for free drinks. I mostly enjoyed this part of the show where we all gathered around interacting with the dealers, Very welcoming, funny and entertaining during the games. When it was time to go up stairs for our dinner which was on the third floor, it was hard not to peak and want to go explore the rooms of the mansion on the way up. I wish we could have had some kind of tour. I did not realize the show was for all ages and was thinking it was an adult event and felt like the overall show was amended more towards family and children. But was very cute a bit armature but fun. They perform a bunch of magic tricks and had the audience guess and be a part of figuring out who was the murderer. The food was ok, than again it is a lot of food to cook for a group. It was served buffet style and desert brought to you at the end. Make sure you bring some cash for tips and if you plan on drinking. Over all it was a relaxing night, I may go again if they have more of an adult evening event sometime. I think this is great and something to do with the whole family!

Not too shabby for a room to stay in. But if you do plan on staying here just be aware there is no coffee on site, having access to coffee and a coffee pot would of made this place a 5! Reminds me of a place i stayed in on my honeymoon in Napa. Very creaky floors no sneaking around here, but the place is old and is to be expected!

We went there in early December of 2014 and the place is just great. The actors are just as pleasant as can be and if you go prepare to be part of the story. Even if you change things up as I did, the actors are able to play a long for a bit without getting away from their plans. The food is good and you won't realize the time has flown by before you know who did it. The only warning that I would be is this house sets in an old neighborhood, so get there early or find yourself parked quite away from the house. Although, the walk may be good for you. I did not stay the night, so I can't comment on how the rooms are at the house. However if they are as good as the show then you won't be disappointed with them either.

I visited the Lumber Baron Inn for the first time today for my first ever Boudoir shoot that I had purchased months before on Groupon. To book my photographer and take advantage of my package, I made the appointment online; which was very easy to navigate and use. I then got a call to confirm the date of shoot and my photographer. I did my research and checked out what the Inn was all about and I was very excited for it. To see it in person today was a whole new awesome experience. It seats quietly inside a normal Denver neighborhood but it takes you to a different world inside. I was lucky to have a room that was phenomenal for my shoot (must have been the honeymoon suite). Walter greeted me warmly and I would reccomend this place for any of your events or just to get away from your home in Denver for a Staycation :)

What an unexpected find. For a short 24 hour trip to Denver on business, I carefully explored the options available for lodging since I don't know the city. Walt graciously answered all my questions about location, parking, accessibility to the interstate, etc. I stayed in the Anniversary Suite. The room is gorgeously furnished with nice touches like a HUGE tub, DVDs to borrow, and an iPad. Slept well on the superb linens and mattress despite the time difference in my internal clock. Great restaurants very close by. I enjoyed exploring the Inn before my breakfast of fresh, hot blueberry muffins and fruit and hearing about the refurbishment. Truly enjoyed my stay and hope to return with my husband. Maybe for a Murder Mystery Night. Hey, Walt, can I be the killer? Wouldn't that be ironic?

I really enjoyed our stay. The honeymoon suite was soooo big!! We enjoyed the jacuzzi tub both nights which was great. A least two of the rooms have them. Only thing I did not like was that the add of breakfast wasn't really worth the price and it would be cool if they provided was for you to store drinks in the room with a mini fridge. Otherwise the service was great and the inn keepers were super friendly and helpful.

We received an overnight stay in the Honeymoon Suite and the Murder Mystery Dinner as a gift. We will definitely return and are planning to come and stay in the Anniversary Suite and try one of the other themed events. The people make the event.... We had a blast with the actors and the other dinner guests. The food was delicious and lovingly prepared and our breakfast delivered to our room was to die for. The jacuzzi tub is heaven. Can't wait to come back!

Cool experience! I've been to a murder mystery dinner before in Kansas City and it wasn't near as interactive as Lumber Baron. The minute you walk through the door, you're involved in the story. We were there on Tuesday and the whole first floor was turned into a 1920's casino. You had lots of free money to play roulette, black jack, and possibly other games (we only made it to two tables). After about an hour, you go upstairs to a very cool setting on the top floor. The team plays a fun celebrity look alike improv comedy game and keeps the crowd laughing. Dinner was very tasty and I was especially impressed with how they took care of people with food allergies. My husband is allergic to gluten and he had plenty to eat. The couple next to us were vegetarian and they got special dinners and desserts as well. The murder mystery itself involves getting to know everyone at your table and reading clues around the room. There is singing, dancing, and lots of laughs. Many guests were brought up on stage to participate in various capacities with the "suspects". We had a great time. I would highly recommend a night at Lumber Baron if you're looking for a fun, unique date night or planning a get together for a group of friends, coworkers, etc. Don't forget to bring cash to tip your servers, who are also the talented actors!

Beautiful bed and breakfast in a cool part of Denver. Surrounding area is just residential enough to allow for parking, but also offer a lot of walking dining options. We uber'd to 16th street mall for $6 one way. Walter was nice and really tried to make our stay special. He told us about the history of the home and how it was decorated. I wish we had more time to just hang out in the home, but we wanted to go hiking which took us away for most of it. Overall, I really appreciated the nice touches to the room (like cool fancy lamps and the unique layout). If you book this place expecting things like a refridgerator and an ice machine and all that like a normal hotel, just go to the Ho-Jo. Otherwise, this is a fun way to explore Denver at rates below that of nearby hotels. Also keep in mind there's a grocery store and other shops all around the property. We stayed in downtown Denver for a couple nights and you cant get anything down there (there's a pharmacy but that's it) and parking was $28/day. After you factor all that stuff in, this B&B looks even more attractive. I would also like to point out that the home is very cool and ornate, but there are some old aspects of it and some "DIY repairs." Frankly, it is easy for me to look past this stuff because the owner and the room were so cool. Again, if you're someone who will complain that the room didn't have your brand of lotion or the soap smelled too sweet, then stay away. For the price, you really cant beat it. Free WiFi, Free Contenental Breakfast (acutally a lot of fruit and bread items, I was surprised) and a complementary iPad to use as well as a DVD library.

A girlfriend and I had always wanted to do a murder mystery dinner, so when they had a wedding themed show and a groupon, since we are both getting married this summer and we're both cheap, we had to take advantage of it. We received an email a few days before the show to make sure they had our groupon voucher numbers, and I confirmed that my friend is a vegetarian. I also said we were planning on showing up early because I figured that's what you're supposed to do. I was told that while we were more than welcome to show up early, the doors didn't open until 6, which is when the show starts. Really glad I asked because hanging out in the front yard with bunch of strangers would have been awkward. It started promptly at 6, with our "wedding coordinator" Summer. All of the staff was in character from the get go. She explained a few things, set the story up a little and had us check in. After check in we went out back for drinks and mingling on the patio. The patio was really nice and the drinks were strong which helped because there were parts of it that were kind of awkward. Mingling with a bunch of people you don't know very well can be weird, at least for me. Most of the cast were outside and talking and interacting with guests. I'm going to be honest, this portion of the evening had me really scared for the rest of the night. Some of the guests were super into it, and trying to talk to other guests or really wanted to interact with the cast, but most people were just kind of hanging out by themselves. Eventually we were all brought upstairs for the wedding and reception. They fed us right away, and we all got our food pretty quickly. Here's where I took away a star. While my food was pretty good with generous portions, the vegetarian meal was almost offensive. The regular meals were a serving of chicken with a salsa on it and a serving of pulled pork with a bunch of different sauces you could try. The vegetarian meal? It was a 4 inch thick slice of grilled pineapple with what worked out to be a chow mein garnish. For what we were paying, and the fact that we live in Colorado where tons of people are either vegetarian or even vegan, this was ridiculous. It was such a tiny amount of food and not comparable at all with what the meat eaters were getting. Man, I'm still kind of mad about it. She said for what it was it was good, but after we got home I ended up making her something else to eat because it wasn't nearly enough. Shortly after the meal was when someone died and the murder part of the murder mystery came into play. They went through everything trying to set up the suspects, and started using people in the audience. This was really where it started to get fun. Most people who were there knew what they were in for and participated wholeheartedly. Even people that I would have been like, oh they're totally going to not do this did it and seemed to have a great time. We went over clues and stuff as a table and had to work out the mystery during dessert, which were gigantic, delicious cupcakes. All in all, it was a really fun night. The cast was really great, they had a really great balance of taking it seriously while at the same time acknowledging what it was, you know? If it wasn't for the weird vegetarian food I probably would have given it 4 stars.

What a wonderful experience! I purchased a groupon to stay in one of the rooms for a night and wanted to do something special for my boyfriends birthday. We booked the Valentine Suit and during confirming my reservation, I was asked if we wanted to sign up for the dinner. We had never done anything like this so my boyfriend and I were all about it! It was AMAZING!! Truly the best idea for a birthday, anniversary or fun night out. The show was fun, exciting and well planned out. Previous comments state that it was based more for families. While it is definitely a family friendly show, there were several adult jokes and situations that only the older members of the audience would understand. They pull several people up on stage and make them apart of the experience (which is so much fun!) and really make sure everyone is having a wonderful time. The Keller family is truly one in a million. All three members of he family contribute to the evening whether is be acting in the show, cooking the very impressive and delicious meal or filming the entire evening and then turning it into a fun media experience for the audience. Their 16 year Los son (btw) is already an experienced film shooter and editor and has so much talent that he contributes. We were very impressed upon meeting him. I could not have had more fun and we are already discussing when we will return next time because one time simply is not enough. If you can stay in one of the amazing rooms, I would highly recommend it! They are each themed differently. The Valentine Suite where we stayed had an authentic Persian setup with an incredible ceiling, huge tub and the most comfortable bed I have slept in away from home. If you like having fun, have a sense of humor and enjoy a great evening full of wonderful food and phenomenal entertainment then this is definitely for you!!

I bought the groupon for something different to do. Booking and redeeming the groupon went fine. It went downhill from there. This turned out to be one of the worst nights of my life. I was embarrassed that we took another couple with us. First off, the place is old and dirty. The seating around dinner table was crowded and uncomfortable in small wooden folding chairs. The food was utterly disgusting. The worst part was the entertainment. They start off screaming at you with a microphone and the noise level never ended. By the time dinner arrived, my stomach was in knots due to the noise. How do they get away with this much noise in a residential neighborhood? So if you are into dirty places, bad food, uncomfortable seating, and bad acting and noise level to raise the roof, this is the place for you.

We had a fantastic time attending the Haunted House Mystery/Comedy Dinner Theatre. My husband is not usually into evenings out like this and he really enjoyed himself. Couldn't stop talking about it. Our food was delicious- especially the pear and walnut salad, which I wouldn't normally expect from a buffet. The entertainment was fun and hilarious. The actors and staff worked hard to make it an evening to remember; they included the audience in the act without making anything awkward. We also got some really comfy shirts that cleverly support the venue for only $5. This is a great way to support locally owned and operated community theatre - and it's a cute B&B if you are from out of town!

I took my husband here for his birthday last summer - for a little in town mini getaway. We did the murder mystery dinner and stayed the night in the Mary Ann Keller Suite. The overall look and feel of the Lumber Baron is wonderful. A Denver native, who really put his all into making it a beautiful Victorian showpiece home, restored it. We got to the Inn maybe 30 minutes early (4pm check in) and it was a ghost town when we walked in. So, no worries, we walked around the parlor and took some pictures and strolled the grounds. There was a wedding going on so it seems their attentions were on that event alone. Still a bit after 4p, someone check us in and we made our way up the beautiful staircase to our room. The suite we were in boasted a HUGE TV that positively engulfed the armoire it was situated in. The bathroom was spacious and had a nice tub and looked out onto the back patio (we had a perfect view of the old Celebrity Sport Center Star from our window!). All in all, the room was nice. The mystery dinner was interesting. We started out in the back mingling with characters making their way through the crowd. The plot of the dinner was fine, although we didn't have much audience participation at ours so it might have sort of trudged through. The dinner was blah! A buffet style meal that consisted of rubbery chicken, rice, and veggies. Nothing I would want to eat again! Still it was an experience and a good one. When we retired to our room we hope for a nice hot bath, but unfortunately, the hotel was out of hot water - for hours. That was a disappointment as one of the reasons you get a huge soaking tub is to fill it with hot water and soak! Overall, it was a nice experience, not grand. It is a beautiful site however and I could see how it would be lovely for weddings.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Lumber Baron last weekend and used a Groupon for our stay. Walter was a nice host and kindly told us of the history of the house as well as some of the ammenities (iPad in room, DVDs to borrow), as well as taking our order for breakfast the next morning. Pros -Walter was friendly and helpful -breakfast was a nice spread of fruits and muffins, delivered to our room Cons -the room was nice, however the bed was very uncomfortable and it became difficult for two of us to sleep in the same bed -the heater in the room seemed old and cords were hanging out around the heater on the floor -the remotes in the room didn't work well for the TV/DVD and we had to get up to change the channel Overall, it was fine. I think our big mistake was booking on the same night as a murder mystery and not partaking in the event. We were told it would be noisy but it was very loud and hard to relax. Not the Lumber Baron's fault as we we're properly warned of the noise (just not the extent). Not our most relaxing weekend in the city.

My sister and I decided to stay here for her birthday. We attended a book signing and magic show. The property is gorgeous and the owners we very fun and courteous. Breakfast was amazing. They really took the time to make you feel welcome and at home. It was a real treat. I had an absolutely fabulous time. I definitely recommend this place for anyone, if just for a quiet weekend get away our a wedding. They also have many great events. I well definitely be staying here again.

At first my husband and I didn't know what to expect because this was our first murder mystery dinner. We ended up having a fabulous time! We couldn't stop laughing the whole time and food was good too! I would recommend anyone who has never been to one of these to try, you will not be disappointed.

Very disappointing! We attended the murder mystery dinner, and really wanted to like the show. The Inn has a lot of character, and the staff were very courteous. However, we were surprised at how low-caliber the acting was. The comedy was so cheesy -- they even utilized the "What's the number for 9-1-1?" joke that was played out decades ago! And the lame sexual innuendos just came off as uncomfortable. The food was also very bland, and the chicken and beef were overcooked. For the price, I have been to many other shows that are superior to this one. For example, The Boulder Dinner Theater has tastier plated food and better actors/singers/shows.

Old, pretty house in an old Denver neighborhood. My three stars are not telling anyone to stay away- it might be your cup of tea. But it wasn't quite mine. It was a little bit too all-over-the-place to feel relaxing. The murder mystery was utter nonsense- not truly a mystery of any kind. It went on for far too long, and the main character had his microphone turned up super loud, and he was speaking super loud, so our ears were blown out by the time it was over. We had the "Colonel Franklin Room." Beautiful albeit small. Very tiny shower and restroom. Beautiful bed and comfy sheets. Fireplace. Big bathtub in the middle of the room, immediately next to the TV & DVD player- which seemed a tad hazardous to me. They have a DVD library downstairs that you should have a look at. Then the murder mystery dinner. We went downstairs and joined the other overnight guests, as well as a bunch of mystery dinner-only guests. We were given poker chips that we could gamble with, so we wouldn't be losing any of our own money. Lots of quirky characters wandering around. You can buy drinks at the bar. We gambled with the other guests and the characters. Then at some point you find out that one of the characters has been killed. Oh no! Then we were ushered upstairs for our buffet-style dinner. We sat at our table and watched a performance (I guess you'd call it that)- music, jokes, songs, magic. It was just so strange, it didn't feel like it flowed at all. It felt like either they had never done it before and were fumbling through it, or they had done it a million times before and were just phoning it in. At some point each table was released to grab their food. The food was meh. I'm not a food snob, but I felt no twinge of YUMMY during the entire meal. Then the mystery was "solved," and we went back to our rooms. In the morning we ordered room service, and they left a basket of food at our door. Beautiful presentation, but again, nothing amazing. I don't even really know where I am going with this review... I'm not trying to make the place sound bad. It is a beautiful, fun, unique location, and something fun to do for a date night if you have a few bucks to spare. Ed and I don't regret going. If anything we have a lot of silly memories of the place. But if you are looking for something elegant and special and luxurious, I might not recommend it. PS There were two tragic and brutal murders here in 1970. Google it. So ghost fans seem to flock to this location, and lots of people say it's haunted. We didn't experience anything paranormal- well, maybe the pork medallions at dinner.

My review is for the Casino Heist Mystery Dinner. I attended with some friends after purchasing a Groupon. What a find! Everything was well organized, communication for booking was simple, and the show was a lot of fun. After reading a few of the negative reviews I am surprised. Perhaps those people did not realize the interactive aspect to the production. The audience is included in the dinner so if you are shy, it could be a bit intimidating. We enjoyed a little pretend gambling at first to loosen up the crowd, then were seated for a buffet style dinner that was very good, and then treated to a interactive and comedic performance. The actors were great at being in character from beginning to end. If you are looking for a little something different for an evening out or something to do with visiting friends, I would highly recommend one of these shows!

GLUTEN FREE DINNER options, just call ahead in advance. We did the murder mystery dinner and it was great since it was so very interactive. Almost everyone was a part of the show at one time or another! My wife was a little sad she wasn't in the show, but she might just have been jealous I had a lead role. haha We started off gambling and then as we were eating dinner the show just started to happen. My only wish is that the story had actual hints/clues so you had a legitimate chance of guessing who done it. Based on our night in didn't even make since that the lady who was supposed to have committed the murder was in plain site the whole time and they were talking about all of the blood from the murder, but besides that part it was a great time! The actors and actresses really do a great job and give it their all, and stay in character so well! Really liked the transformation the police officer pulls off from being super zany to the complete opposite in his other character, but I don't want to give anything away, you'll have to experience it for yourself. Oh and when they ask you to act a certain way when you are filmed, go ahead and embellish, it makes for great film, again I don't want to give away too much!

I have been here twice- once for a "staycation" night in the B & B. We stayed in what I think was the 'honeymoon suite". It was really nice. Beautiful room (the whole place is amazing) comfortable bed and a nice picnic basket hot breakfast in the morning. We liked it so much, I booked our company Christmas party there- highly recommend this. Walt and his crew put on a great show and the food is decent for the murder mystery venue. A must see place if you live in Denver!

Purchased a groupon to stay the evening at the Lumber Baron Inn. The innkeeper, Walter greeted us at the door and showed us around the mansion. It was absolutely beautiful. The work that has gone into this mansion is amazing! Walters love for his home shines through! We did not attend the murder mystery dinner, so I can not comment on that. We were signed up for the Anniversary Suite, but were upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite. The bed was very comfortable and the jacuzzi tub was very nice. We were offered to have breakfast downstairs or delivered upstairs in our room. We choose to have breakfast in our room. We did upgrade to a full breakfast: quiche, bagel and lots of fresh fruit, coffee & orange juice. It was delivered on time and was delicious!! There was plenty of free parking on the street and plenty of good restaurants within 3 or 4 blocks. We walked to a restaurant for dinner and enjoyed looking at all the old homes in the Highlands neighborhood. The only thing that I can say negative, and let me tell you, it is very minor: There was not a hair dryer in our room or shampoo/conditioner. A small bar of soap was provided, along with a dispenser of liquid soap at the sink. Very minor.

My wife brought me here for a birthday overnight because I wanted to do a murder mystery dinner theater and we thought it'd be cool to stay in a B&B. The house was beautiful and lovingly restored. There was a book in the room with a bunch of newspaper clippings from the restoration and history of the house and it was truly unique. The room itself was big and cool with a huge, big screen TV. One of the old school ones that probably weighs a few hundred pounds. The bathroom was nice, too, with a giant soaking tub. Dinner was just okay. Nothing to write home about. The murder mystery was cute and slightly entertaining. The players had obviously done it a few times before and the costumes were nice. It was fun! After dinner we went back to the room to try the tub and had absolutely NO hot water. After waiting a bit and trying again I went down to complain and had to wait to talk to the manager/owner as he was too busy telling other party goers how much of his own time and money into the restoration. Having gone thru the same spiel from him earlier it was obvious that he loved hearing himself talk. He finally spared me, a paying guest, a moment to tell me that everyone shared the same water supply and that we'd just have to wait. I think it took a couple more hours before we actually had hot water. Overall, it was a very cute, fun, experience for my birthday and it probably would have gotten another star if we'd have had hot water :)

Perhaps not the wedding venue for everyone, but we are an unusual couple anyway. For a mansion wedding in Denver, you can't get a better price. The garden is clearly the jewel in their crown and is ideal for an outdoor wedding. The third floor ballroom is quite difficult to gain access to and can limit your catering choices and some caterers refuse to work there. I found the owners to be responsive, if not a little harried. As a no-nonsense, cut to the chase type of person, I respected their approach. As a Bed & Breakfast, it really is top notch. The breakfast delivered to your door is a feast and the huge flat panel TVs in the remodeled old mansion with period furniture is the best of both worlds. Several of the rooms even have monster bathtubs, perfect for total relaxation.

When we first got married years ago, we stayed a night at the Lumber Baron Inn and attended the Lannie Garret concert in their ballroom. The concert was entertaining but the food left a lot to be desired. However, the room was beautiful and the service was great. It was a cherished memory. We recommended it to friends and always wanted to go back. If the story ended there, then I would have given it 5 stars! Since then we have moved out of state, had two kids, and recently moved back to Colorado. Two days ago, the Lumber Baron Inn did a Living Social voucher that included either the Anniversary, Valentine, or Honeymoon Suite, an hour couples massage, and breakfast for $200. I thought what a great deal! This was the perfect chance to go back! We just had a baby 6 months ago and we really needed to get away! The voucher was good until Sept. 21, so it gave us the summer to get the baby weened, so it could be just the two of us! So I bought the Living Social, followed the voucher's instructions to redeem, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the room and date I wanted (Sept. 1) were available on the Lumber Baron website. I submitted the request. Within a few minutes the owner, Walter, responded with an email saying: "Got your reservation request, but we don't book more than one or two months out." I thought that was weird since it showed available on their website and nothing on the Living Social stated any booking stipulations. So I emailed him back explaining that we wanted to insure we got the date and room and were afraid that waiting until the middle of summer to book that it might be unavailable. Here's what he wrote me word for word: "I wish I could say yes to your request, but it doesn't work exactly like clockwork in regards to dates becoming available for shows. Throughout the year we get lots of requests for total buy-out nights (I'm working on one for June right now for instance) where folks take all the tickets and sometimes all the rooms too. Those events generally book more than four-six weeks out. As a result, we generally book single room nights and pairs of tickets within that 4-6 week period prior to the date. As for having dates available in September, I'm sure there will be plenty of chance to book as the summer rolls on and it's a good idea to start looking as soon as July. Talk to you then..." I was a bit baffled. Obviously this guy has never heard the proverb, "a bird in hand is worth more..." Basically he was hoping to book all those rooms and the weekend dates with events and guests paying full price! Then if there was any unbooked within 4-6 weeks, which is really considered last minute, he would be more than happy to reserve the room for anyone that had purchased the Living Social deal. I don't know why this guy is doing Living Social deals! If he can rent the rooms out without a special deal, then why do a Living Social? Living Social is advertising to either attract new customers or to get previous customers to come back. If he wants to be so selective about when you can book, then why not state that in the fine print of the Living Social voucher? Is it because it would then reduce the number of people that would purchase a voucher? It seems that Walter wants the best of both worlds: he wants to book as much as he can at full price and then whatever is left over, he wants to book at the special price. I returned my voucher and got my $200 back. I don't support business that are only concerned with how everything affects them. What about customer's schedules? With two kids and jobs, our only chance to getaway is on the weekends. The chance that the Honeymoon Suite would be available over Labor Day weekend was about nil. I would have been forced to either let my Living Social voucher expire, which then I'm out $200, or rearrange my schedule to use it on a weeknight since that's what would be "available" come 4-6 weeks out from September. In fact, Walter has tarnished a cherished memory! I will never attend his Lumber Baron Inn again and anyone considering staying here should know that this establishment does NOT value you as a guest! It only sees you as a dollar sign! If you need another reason, last night I went back on the Lumber baron website to see what dates were available on the reservation list and he has blocked out every weekend May through October. Must have gotten quite a number of calls from people with Living Social vouchers! If they were smart, they returned theirs as well!

I stayed at the Lumber Baron Inn & Gardens for the first time last night and went to my second murder mystery dinner there and am already excited to go back! The owner bought this incredible house years ago and the renovations are incredible. First, the rooms. I stayed in the Valentine suite and it was completely amazing. It was a huge room with a spa tub and one of the most comfortable beds! It was fun to stay in such a cool place. Plus, the breakfast was seriously the most amazing thing I've ever had for breakfast. I was lucky enough to get this crazy good cinnamon raisin stuffed french toast with fruit and bacon. Seriously - it was delicious! Now, for the murder mystery shows. I can't say enough how much fun I have at these shows. I'm already planning another trip back with a group of friends. They are crazy and wacky and the entire audience gets involved. The actors are hilarious!! It's not the most serious plot and it doesn't always make sense but it's a BLAST. I would recommend checking out the Lumber Baron Inn to anyone. Check out the incredible house renovations, try the amazing breakfast or visit for the hilarious and fun murder mystery dinner. Already looking forward to my next visit!

Please do yourself a favor, and never buy a groupon or any other coupon for this place. It is a nightmare to book, and you would do better to pay full price if you are really jonesing to go. Otherwise you have to wait for them to post a schedule, they post it one month at a time, vouchers are not good for immediate use, you have to pick 3 dates that you are free (which is hard to find 3 weekend dates in a month that my friends and I can all agree to get together to do this thing....I don't know about you but I have a life beyond figuring out when the murder mystery theater will *let* me visit them), then you have to wait 7-10 days for them to answer you as to when you get to go. Also, for 2 days off and on I tried to actually book us but the links were broken to try to add your voucher. And guess what, you can only book online! No calling them. Sarah at Groupon did refund me and my husband for our troubles, however Eric and Jacob with Groupon refused to refund my friend Melisa and her friend. Even after I told them our experience and that I got refunded. Because of groupon's lack of response to my friend, I will never use Groupon or try to go to this dinner theater again. As Sweet Brown would say "Ain't nobody got time for that".

I'm rather partial to this establishment since it was our wedding site...but we've also been back since just for an overnight stay, and the 5-star rating still sticks! First of all, as far as a wedding site, this place is so unique! They do have nice gardens in the back if you happen to be enjoying some lovely summer weather for your wedding, but if not, the first floor of this 3-story Victorian house is so intimate and perfect! We did get married indoors (March 2006), and for an evening wedding it was simply lovely. The second floor is where the rooms are, and they include a Honeymoon Suite (where we stayed the night of our wedding, price was included in the site rental), as well as an Anniversary Suite (we stayed there for our 1st anniversary). Breakfasts there are INCREDIBLE. You place your order the night before, tell them what time you'd like it, and at about that time the following morning, you get a call that your breakfast is waiting for you outside of your door. There they have left you a quaint basket containing your entire breakfast, including fresh scrumptious coffee, warm muffins, fresh juice, and the rest is piping hot and ready for you to enjoy in the privacy of your room! They have other themed rooms for guests, and all are decorated very uniquely, so whatever room you stay in will not be anything like the others. Oh, and their 3rd floor is a spacious ballroom, complete with restrooms and a small secluded gable with window bench seats, as well as an area for a bar or food service. Perfect for parties, receptions, etc! The owners are wonderful people, and very personable. It's just a great feature of the city of Denver to have a place like this!

We went for the murder-mystery dinner theater "Haunted House Hunt" and really enjoyed it! The bar prices were reasonable with a good selection and dinner was delicious! There was more than enough food and the show was great! While we did have a hard time putting the characters together in the plot - and still arent sure how it all came together - we had a great time and would definitely return.

Found out about this spot on a Living Social deal, since I visit Denver for work trips thought I would check it out for a day. If you enjoy the feel of vintage era settings, it's a wonderful place. Not the kind of spotless amenites of the local Hyatt, but I wanted to experience something nostalgic so it was perfect. Jacuzzi tub was fantastic touch, nice big tv in the room, and breakfast served in the dining or direct to the room. I didn't experience the shows offered there, but the ghost stories on the place were certainly interesting. The deal included a one hour massage, which was incredible! I hope they offer more deals like that in the future for my return work trips!

My husband and I try to get away each year to celebrate our anniversary to a B&B in the mountains....but saw the Living Social special and decided to save the gas money and stay in Denver since we live in the burbs and don't get downtown much. The owner was quick to respond to my emails to book our room and I loved that there were no surprises or hidden fees (I sometimes am leery of those "too good to be true" discount specials!) We started the day with lunch and sightseeing on the 16th street mall then checked into our room around 4. I LOVE old style architecture and decor and was not disappointed! The Inn is beautiful! Right down to the creaking floors! This is an old house so of course it is going to look weathered and worn - if you don't like that style then you will probably not be happy. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite. It was amazing! The bed was beautiful and comfortable, the room was clean and organized, the jacuzzi tub was so relaxing (and surprisingly had enough hot water to fill it up!), and the HUGE flat screen TV and complimentary ipad were nice touches! We attended the Shakespear Murder Mystery Dinner. It was hilarious! But I have to admit that at first I wasn't sure if it was something I was going to like and I almost suggested to my husband that we skip out and go relax in our room. So glad we stayed because it was so much fun! We always do the same old date night - dinner and a movie - and it was so fun to do something new and different! The food was yummy and the actors were the best. They had a young man taking pics throughout the evening - which I assumed you would have to pay for after - but was pleasantly surprised to learn they post them online for free for you to download! Most places will squeeze a buck out of you anyway they can so was impressed to see they made the pics available at no charge. The next morning we had breakfast in our room - delicious warm muffins and fresh fruit - and then headed downstairs for a couples massage. We had a chance to chat with Walter and another couple that were eating breakfast. I love meeting new people and enjoyed hearing about the Inn's history from Walter who was happy to chat and answer any of our questions. The couples massage was a great end to a perfect getaway! Thank you Walter for a wonderful experience!

I will always love this place a little because I got married there. Not where you would expect to find a cozy BnB (in the middle of moderately suburban Denver), but an awesome place for memorable events, be they overnight stays or general gatherings. The building and gardens are a piece of historic Denver mixed with the modern, restored as often as possible with original materials, with all kinds of random pictures and displays around to teach you about the restoration and history of the house (I was keen to find out that Denver's first drug-related murder happened here in the 70's. But then, I'm a morbid weirdo...) The garden/courtyard is absolutely bursting with blooming flowers and colors in the summer time, and is a popular place to get married (especially on a budget, ahem). Walter and Julie are great to work with regarding tours, communications, and the logistics of whatever type of event you are planning. The fact that the place is owned by a married couple really gives you a warm fuzzy when planning a wedding there... The layout leaves something to be desired for events (the ballroom is on the top floor, above a killer-narrow set of stairs, which makes it tough to get to for older/disabled guests), but the hotel and guest services amenties are top-notch; a big-screen LCD in each of the 5 rooms, a decent DVD collection for the night owl, a giant mirror (nevermind) or other distinctive feature in each room, and a tasty breakfast await anyone brave enough to venture in to Highlands. They can even webcast your event, if you or someone else can't be there for the big outing. My favorite part: The Honeymoon Suite sits on a corner, and the part of the room inside the turret-ish area houses a giant (if drafty, due to the surrouding windows; winter-time enjoyment is marginal) bathtub, excellent for gettin your consummation on... Plus, 7-11 is right around the corner. Heaven.

This review is for the mystery dinner theater "Double Down Donny" and not for the bed and breakfast. We went there with a small group for a friend's birthday. The actor interaction was generally awkward and sometimes uncomfortable. It may be fun for some, but for me it was just strange. The show overall was not good. The plot was disconnected and weak. There were moments that were amusing and the audience participation was fun at times. The food was just OK, but most notably the portions were really small. I eat less than the average guy, but I was still really disappointed. They ran out of food and had nothing else. We left hungry. For the ticket price we were pretty unhappy. I'd avoid the dinner theater.

We went as a group to the murder mystery dinner. The actors were fun but the murder mystery was just silly. Everyone in our group found the whole story hard to follow and at times even hard to understand what they were saying. The acoustics just weren't very good. The dinner itself was rather blah. I am not at all picky about food, but the chicken and the pork loin were rather bland. The pear salad was good although the blueberries were mushy. The house itself is very interesting and quite beautiful, although I would NOT recommend staying in one of the rooms. The guest rooms are on the second floor and the ballroom where the events are held is right above them. The noise level would be terrible. Also you will have everyone walking right past your room as they go upstairs and again after the show is over to go back down. I felt bad for the people who were staying in one of the guest rooms the night we attended the show, as they kept getting walked in on. (People were touring the house on their own after the show.) Overall the experience was just okay. Not bad, not good.

My boyfriend and I came here because we had a Groupon for a mystery dinner theater. Such a good idea!! They were professional about getting us 'checked in' for the performance, but after that it was nothing but fun and games. We arrived for the 'Casino Night Heist', and while I didn't understand some of the actors costumes right off the bat (are pirates and Mardi Gras masks just par for the course in Vegas?) it came together with the performance. I learned how to play blackjack and roulette for the first time, and the other guests were a blast to hang out with. It really is as much fun as you decide it's going to be. The food was perfectly fine, definitely not gourmet, but tasty and for the price we ate our fill. I give a thumbs up for any bar awesome enough to serve Guiness!! The coffee was terrible though. :( The performance was fun, the actors really got into it and the audience members who didn't have a stick up their butt made it sing. I'm not sure why you would come to a mystery dinner theater if you're not going to enjoy getting up on stage, wearing nose blindfolds and pole-dancing. Just do it and the evening it more fun for everyone! All around, highly entertaining, can't wait to do it again and pay full price this time!

My boyfriend and I had been looking in Denver for a non-chain hotel with character. When we couldn't find one, we found the Lumber Baron Inn. Honestly, we picked it because the pictures of the honeymoon suite, with the giant harp, made us laugh, but we are thrilled that we went. It *is* kitschy, but the place has been immaculately restored, and the owners are incredibly helpful and generous. I have celiac and so told them in advance that I couldn't eat wheat. They brought us amazing gluten free food every day, including gluten free french toast one morning. As well, the bathtub was out of my dreams. My god, it was glorious. My only complaint is that I wish they provided bubble bath. Other than that, it was one of the nicest experiences I've had staying in a b&b I've ever had.

If I could give no stars I would. We were going to have our wedding here. I booked it, paid upfront and then the more I looked at the place I realized how dirty it was and we cancelled our date. According to the contract we signed with them, we would get our money back if someone rebooked for that date. Well someone did rebook for that date and the owner said that when he wrote the contract, he really meant date AND time and kept our money, over $2,000. I'm not one to write bad reviews, this may be my first, but this guy is a creep.

Weird. We checked out the Lumber Baron as a potential site for our wedding and reception. I have to say the place has been obviously lovingly restored. It would have been a great place, but there were red flags all over the place that I just couldn't commit my wedding experience to. First, the ball room is on the 3rd floor so if you have older guests they may or may not be able to make it. Even navigating the steepness of the stairs in a wedding gown could be daunting since the changing room they boast is also on the 3rd floor. Second, the owners didn't seem like they cared if they had our business or not. Between not returning calls or e-mail inquiries and being fairly absent during the "open house" I really got the feeling that they wouldn't treat our wedding and wedding guests as if they were important. Not what I want at all. What bride would? In addition, they were completely unwilling to budge the time for the wedding. "Every minute is accounted for in our day." So, even if my guests were the ones staying in the B & B portion I couldn't move the time of the wedding up an hour because it would "inconvenience the guests". hmmmm... Lastly, they don't take credit cards and want the entire fee up front. That just seems a bit shady and I don't get it. I would expect to pay 50% down non-refundable, but cash upfront 9 months in advance? No way, buddy. Again, the gardens and the house are lovely, and if you are willing to bend your big day to their specs then it might be great. I'm not willing to take that chance.

The Lumber Barron is really a nice victorian get away. Walter and his staff are kind and freindly. The redone victorian mansion is a rare and romantic setting to take someone special.

We wanted to experience a bit of Denver history so chose the Lumber Baron Inn and Gardens. Wow what a disappointment. It is shabby and none too clean. The suite was fairly large but the pocket doors were stuck ( or maybe just really heavy) so we could not close the door between the bed and the bath. Luckily there was a water closet for some privacy. However that was dark and the baseboard heater was all rusted near the toilet giving evidence of many misses possibly? Yuck. The large sunken tub looked like something out of a 1970's cheesy ad for the Poconos. This is a Victorian Inn I would have expected a claw foot tub. We didn't use it mostly because neither one of us was going anywhere near those grayish stained nasty towels. They even had the nerve to put a dirty hand towel (neatly folded) in a basket on the tub for women to use to remove their makeup. Seriously???? The whole time we stayed we used one of our own t-shirts to dry our hands. Though the shower looked clean we did not shower for fear of catching something. We asked for breakfast in out room so we would not have to chat with the owner in the morning. It was delivered on time and in a nice basket. Without going in to too much detail let me just say the only good thing about the food was the orange juice which was probably Tropicana. We entertained ourselves by watching tv through the weak, weak coffee in the glass mug. The bed itself was very comfortable but the light from the hallway shines in the room all night. If you go take a sleep mask or be prepared to sleep with the pillow over your head. We attended the murder mystery show they have on friday nights and trust me if you go you are wasting your money. The story was stupid and the acting abysmal. No amount of liquor could make any of it funny. The food was an horrid. The owner stood on stage and praised the chef saying she is a culinary school graduate from some place in Oregon. If it was an online course I would believe it. The chicken was rubbery as were the string beans. The salad was wilted and soaked in a tasteless oily mess. The rolls weren't bad though. Having had the weak tea strength coffee I stayed away from that and well as the dry looking dessert. I was glad when the so called entertainment was over and we could leave and return to the room. We left before checkout time the next morning. I do not understand all the five star reviews unless they are from friends of the owners. Too bad because the Inn could be fabulous with the right kind of renovations.

My experience with the Lumber Baron was fantastic from start to finish! We held our company Christmas party there and had the pleasure of staying overnight. The house was beautifully restored and I loved my room (the Valentine)! It was spacious and comfortable and I enjoyed the over sized tub. The pre dinner gambling was a lot of fun and we got to interact with many of the actors that would be in the murder mystery. After gambling, we enjoyed a great dinner. The food was better than I expected. The show itself was hilarious and fun to watch and I really enjoyed the audience participation and improv. The next morning, we were served breakfast. Once again, the food was delicious and exceeded my expectations. Throughout our entire event, the service was top notch and really made my experience great! Overall, I had a wonderful time and can't wait to go again!
