Had lunch there today on a recommendation from a friend. Good salsa (maybe too spicy), ordered the enchiladas 3 each of the beef (mushy GROUND beef) & 3 of the very bland shredded chicken. Will stay clear of those next visit.....but I do want to try the highly recommended fried Tacos! Three hours later, I have heartburn from HELL! Think I might skip another visit! LOL!

I've never had any meal in Colorado, but considering it was my one meal in this state and my time was very limited, this was amazing! I didn't know what they meant by Green Chile, but duh, it's a different type of spicy chili. It was so good with the beans. With the fried tacos, I tried one with each type of meat. It had your basic ingredients for any topic except the meat was fresher, there was a slice of avocado, and the hot sauce was homemade. Wow! I didn't want to leave Denver and now I will be on a new mission for finding 'New Mexico Cuisine' near San Francisco. Thank You God for finding me this one!

Seriously, this place was terrible. We came to try the "famous" fried tacos- yuck! Gross lettuce, stale shell, poor quality meat and they used NACHO Cheese sauce .... What authentic Mexican restaurant uses nacho cheese? Way disappointing.

  • Nicholas W.

We had to try the famous fried tacos and margaritas. We each had a beef, steak and chicken fried taco. I liked the chicken the best but was not really impressed with any of them. There wasn't much flavor to any of the meat and not a lot else there but lettuce and cheese. The fried shell didn't add anything to the taco as far as taste. The margarita was okay, but for $7 a glass in the afternoon I would have like some good quality tequila rather than the well- quality I got. After I got back to the hotel I got a headache, good quality tequila should not give you a headache.

Really nice people that work here and they hustle..famous for fried taco, but I wouldn't come back. $7.25 for a chicken burrito, no beans or rice, no veggies.. plain, boring, bland. When I got the bill they charged $8 for the burrito, even worse. They also charge you for chips and salsa.

I have been going to Mexico City for steak tacos for 20+ years. It is a place that myself and coworkers have preferred as one of our staple places. AWESOME steak tacos.went there today and found out they changed the sauce/salsa that we would pour on the steak tacos. How disappointing, the tacos were still good, but no longer as good as they once were. There were 5 of us that went today, all disappointed. Bring back the salsa please!!!

Shit was bomb dog!!! I had the fried steak taco and a bowl of menudo. Service was very friendly and helpful. I'm picky when it comes to good authentic Mexican food and I loved it. No fancy stuff, just really delicious Mexican food.

Fried tacos are the s*!t. Pretty quick service for how busy they get. Never been offered chips/salsa, although I see them go out all the time (I save my carbs for beer anyways lol). Great for hangovers. I'm a fan.

  • John M.

By far the best tacos in town. Great red beers as well. I would recommend to everyone. But I do not have to , the food and the great service speak for themselves.

    (5)
  • Luke W.

Got the fried tacos. Was a very authentic feel and they were pretty good for the price. Good drink specials if you go during happy hour. I would say if you're looking for some quick Mexican, stop on over and get some tacos and a beer.

best deep fried tacos ever!!!! i'm from tucson, az and this is closest to really good mexican food i've had in co. you must order the deep fried tacos! yummy yum yum! their salsa is also really good.

Their amazing crispy fried tacos earned them all Five of those stars. Nothing else matters.

  • Michael M.

It used to be the best Mexican food in denver, but it is now way too yuppified. I recommend el toro for fried tacos.

  • Bob N.

Get the fried tacos in the chili rellenos, follow that by a margarita... Should treat you right

  • Juan E.

Love this place! I have been going here almost every Sunday for 25 years. My dad introduced me very young. He had been enjoying Mexico City when it was across the street next to the salvation army. Needless to say our family has grown up with this great establishment. The Tacos are Amazing! Cant find them anywhere else besides another small shop on Colorado Blvd and I70. And that place branched off from Mexico City. Bobby and his family are amazing people. Cant say enough good things about them. Keep up the good work.

American cheese on the tacos? Wtf?!?! Ambiance was nice, but that's about it... Sorry Denver! You gotta work on your Mexican cuisine!

Took a walk here during a recent visit to Denver. I was not impressed at all. Decor: 2.5 Service: 3 Food: 2 (only because their Fried Tacos we pretty good, otherwise food is 1 star) First off, their Chips were stale and their Salsa was way too spicy. (I like spicy but this was hardly edible). I asked for something less spicy and was told this was all they have. So, I ordered a side of Pico De Gallo to try and cool the Salsa down a bit. No such luck. Their Pico De Gallo was filled with jalapenos. So much so that when my wife and I tried a tomato out of it, we almost couldn't feel our tongues. I ordered the Enchiladas which were mediocre at best and my wife had their Famous Fried Tacos which were not too bad. They would have been even better if the chicken had been seasoned a litte better and shirred just a bit. If you're in Denver and in search of Mexican food? I'd suggest you keep searching.

Just had lunch here today with some friends... sweet baby Jesus i love this place. I have been here at least 4 times prior. I was introduced to the fried tacos before i went on maternity leave, my co workers threw a going away lunch and had the tacos as our meal initially i did not think they where that great. After i came back to work i tried it again by actually going to the restaurant, waiters are nice, always busy but we have never had to wait for a table. very fast service. The only part i was surprised about is having to pay for the chips & salsa. I will give it 5 stars because the Steak Fried Tacos are SO Good and service is fast & friendly. will be returning ! & returning!

Had lunch (carryout) here today, and got three steak tacos. They were tasty, but very, very greasy and left me with quite a gut bomb for my afternoon. I think next time I will skip the tacos and give the burrito a try. Their salsa that comes with the tacos is good. I posted a couple pics of their menu becuase they didnt have carry out ones and their website has been down.

Pretty good Mexican food... However, Instead of dollars, Mexico City's menu should tell you the price you'll pay in the bathroom.

  • Sam B.

The fried tacos are the best in town, hands down! The chips, salsa and guacamole are on point as well.Drinks are good and they keep them coming alcohol or otherwise. It's a spot that use to be a hole in the wall and now is a bit of a trendy place to go, but the food is still like mama use to make! I have to be honest I've been here a ton of times but never had anything but the tacos, you gotta try them!

  • Jody T.

Best tacos in Denver. Truth. Perfect before a Rockies game.

    (4)
  • Andrea M.

Not a fan of all their food just the awesome tacos!! Been going here since I have as a kid and tacos are still the bomb, their pancakes are good too if your their for breakfast

    (4)
  • Adam W.

Are you kidding, the fried tacos! I live in so cal, visit Baja every month, and have never tasted anything like their tacos. Amazing. I wished they stayed open later though. Great service too. I ordered the three different tacos......money. Not too pricey. Keep the Tecates coming.

    (4)
  • Gayle E.

The steak fried tacos are sinfully delicious! A little greasy, but I wouldn't change a thing. YUM!

    (4)
  • Joe S.

This spot has some things going for it - the bartender was a nice guy, and it's located next to coors field. But I like to judge Mexican restaurants by their food. This one, unfortunately, didn't impress. The chile relleno - really guys, a 1" wide sliver of pepper totally dominated by a chewy shell of bread crumbs? Barely edible. I liked the fried taco shell, but the steak inside by itself was sadly devoid of flavor. Have a few of the margaritas as an appetizer and you'll be fine.

    (2)
  • Felicia M.

Good Father's Day service, even though they were short handed,, The fried chicken tacos are bomb!! Go here!! Bloody Mary was off the chain

  • jesse j.

This is my wife's favorite place to go which is good because now it's a favorite of mine as well. The food here is delicious. Now I have only had guacamole and chips and the fried tacos so maybe on my next visit I'll try something else besides the tacos. Or I'll order something with the tacos because honestly, that's the only reason we come here. That's not a bad thing! They're delicious. Lately the guacamole has been getting a little skimpy but that's ok. Everyone here is really nice and on the weekends they have a Dj playing some pretty awesome music.

Mexico City Lounge has been around for a while. It was relatively new to me, or I may have been here decades ago and simply forgot about it. Either way, it was a great "new discovery" when a co-worker mentioned going to MCL for lunch. It has now become part of my lunch rotation. The famous fried tacos are the standout feature on the menu. I like the rest of the fare on the menu as well, and I've had several of the combo plates. The beans and rice are traditional, the bar is well stocked and service is usually prompt. They bring salsa for the table as part of the chips and salsa, but there is a special taco salsa that comes in a squeeze bottle. Not the greatest thing since sliced avocado, but a decent, consistent showing from a restaurant that has managed to survive the test of time.

  • Carl J.

If you want to eat "steak" tacos that are equivalent to dog food grade meat with American cheese... This is your spot. It might as well be called Mexico shitty

    (1)
  • Katrina D.

One word... TACOS! The best fried tacos in town. I love both the chicken and steak tacos. It's always great place to stop in for a red beer on the weekends. The staff is friendly and usually greets you with a smile. Service is usually pretty fast, even when they are busy with the lunch crowd.

  • Jamie S.

We've been here twice and we will be back. The fried steak tacos are delicious. The bottomless chips and salsa is a must have. And what goes great with chips, salsa & tacos? Ice. Cold. Beer. During happy hour, PBR is 2 bucks. Great atmosphere, great food and a great location. What more do you want?

  • Mary O.

Came here with friends on Father's Day. They have amazing salsa. I really like the fact it's spicy. We ordered the fried steak taco. I can honestly say it may be a bit too greasy for me but they are very tasty. Their green salsa is amazing!!!! Great spice. This was my first time. I enjoyed their cheese enchilada and their rice. I think next time I may do their breakfast. We rode our motorcycles and it was packed. The service was pretty good for how busy they were. All in all I can say I will come back here again.

    (4)
  • Chris M.

Fried Tacos - steak and avocado were excelente! Cool place, service kept this place from getting 5 stars. I'd go again

    (4)
  • Marcos C.

The fried tacos there are really, really good, and really greasy. If you're looking for healthy, keep on walking. Looking for great tasting fried tacos, you have come to the right place.

    (5)
  • Nikki S.

Best tacos in Denver! 4 tacos are plenty, and they are sooooooooo tasty. Sometimes the service leaves something to be desired, but it depends who is working. I have only ever had the tacos, but they are by far the best I've ever had. Casual atmosphere, great guacamole, Check this place out!

    (5)
  • Kristina M.

I have lived here all my life and im a huge fan of mexican food. This is by far the best place. Excellent tacos, great menudo, and my favorite breakfast burritos.

    (5)
  • Jeff H.

Excellent fried tacos. Friendly staff. Atmosphere is that of a dive bar but I like that.

    (4)
  • Michelle G.

Meh. Not the best but not horrible either. Maybe if I was drinking or hungover it would taste better. Order: Chips and salsa 3 Beef fried tacos Tostada Mexi Hamburger $24 total Salsa with chips was just tomato no seasoning at all. Tacos were ok meat again not seasoned and the tostada was average. Mexi hamburger had good flavor. Server came by our table to drop off check and that was all. Went in at 1 on a Tuesday and it was not busy. I'll go back if I'm hungover but only if Chubby's is closed :)

    (3)
  • Chris G.

I love their tacos. They are fantastic! The only negative I have about this place is the smell you leave with. There are so many things being fried, the air has grease in it, and you leave with that smell. That's the downside, but it's well worth it to eat those amazing tacos! Would definitely recommend...

    (5)
  • Lorem I.

Get hung over and eat some menudo! That's what's up.

    (3)
  • Sasha H.

Best fried steak tacos on the planet. The rest is a bit boring, so stick with what brought you in and you'll leave happy every time ;)

    (4)
  • A H.

Do not deviate....stick to the fried steak tacos. Amazing.

    (4)
  • Tres B.

Alas, this charming looking place on Larimer disappoints with its greasy food, mealy rice, skimpy meat servings and surprisingly bland offerings. The busy lunch crowd seemed to enjoy their meals., but I was aghast at the lack of quality. Nothing tasted good. It was either bland, or to use the technical phrase, yukki. Fried tacos? How about a grease coated shell, barely any meat, but lots of listless shredded lettuce and a thin avocado slice? The service was halting at times but very friendly. Wow - if this place served newer, more healthy cuisine it would own this area.

    (2)
  • Nancy W.

Famous for sure! I have gone there many times and every time they never fail. I always get the famous tacos with chicken... It tastes like heaven in my mouth. It's in a great location for pre gaming before a Rockies game and a great location to find street parking near by. It's somewhat small but it works, they also have a full bar. I would recommend this place to someone who is looking for a great authentic Mexican restaurant.

After my last visit, I told myself don't bother going back. But my brother took me out to lunch today and it's where he picked. I like the fried tacos, although they are too greasy to have more than one and not feel miserable afterwards. What I am not a fan of is the way they nickel and dime you to death. $1 for a SLICE of avocado? $2 for chips and salsa? $1 for substitutions? Okay, $1 for substitutions might not be bad if they actually made the substitution... and then only charged you a dollar but..... today, they not only did not give me the item I asked for as the substitution in my 3 item combo, but they didn't give me the original item either. The server we had today was nicer than the last one, but same as the last - she didn't come back to check on our table. And we couldn't catch her attention to save our lives. It's bad enough when you're on a lunch hour and can't get a bill to get out of there, but Lord help you if you need anything during your meal, or say - something is not right with your meal. There's a big enough crowd there during lunch (and also the short business hours) to indicate that their doing well enough to keep providing mediocre to poor service. That's really too bad. I'm sure they won't miss me coming in, and I'm sure I'll miss a greasy taco every now and then...

  • S J.

Appears the item worth ordering are the "fried" tacos. I opted for a green chili plate. I can honestly say it was the WORST green chili ever. Ordered hot...NO spice NO flavor. Thumbs down on the rice as well. The chips n salsa n guacamole were good, however. Decor gets a thumbs down too, cave-like.

    (1)
  • Joel F.

As long as you set your expectation level correctly going here, you will be ok. It is greasy, but tasty in that hole-in-the-wall sort of way. They are known for the fried tacos. The steak taco is pretty good. If you are an "authentic Mexican" food snob, go elsewhere. This is for the people that want comfort tex mex put you to bed food. Be aware they close after lunch.

    (3)
  • Shawn N.

The fried tacos are fantastic - but not for the health nuts.

  • Jeffrey E.

What I had? Steak fried tacos Food review: I was really craving revisiting this place after not really remembering what it was like the first go around. It sounded good so finally made it out here again. I don't know what it is because these tacos are really missing something and I can't really put my finger on it (cuz they're so greasy I don't want to touch anything with them. Ha! :-) ). They seem like they could use something yet to become easily great. Maybe something to flavor the meat or something. I can't say I'm a fan of the "salsa" that comes in the "ketchup" bottles they hand out. They're just OK to me. Service? No complaints

  • Grace B.

Considering my buzz level the Saturday afternoon I came in here it's strange that I didn't order the fried tacos. I did steal a bite from a friend and it's a delicious grease bomb to the gut. I instead went with the green chile plate and was pleasantly surprised by the nice flavor and heat to it. The plate came with rice and beans since I was just craving Tex-Mex refried beans. Beers seemed a little pricey, but service was fast and friendly. Overall pretty standard Mexican plus deep fried tortillas.

    (3)
  • Jessi A.

Didn't stay to try the food. Drink order took at least 10 min and the place was dead. Then once my drink arrived it was not what I had ordered. Place had an unappetizing odor. No thanks...already.

    (2)
  • Andreas H.

Greasy. WAYYY greasy. Every corn tortilla that was on my plate was chewy and dripping with grease that tasted... well... not very good. The cheese enchilada was tasty (I wish I would have had more of them). The beans and rice were average at best, and the beef had an off-taste that really let me down. However, the service was very nice, the location was clean, and my friends burrito tasted terrific. Would I go again? Possibly, but I would stay FAR away from the tacos.

  • Eddie B.

The best tacos on earth! If your with someone and they order something other than tacos please follow the steps below. (please note anyone who doesnt order tacos is a bad person) step 1 say you have to go to the bathroom step 2 run out the back door (try to snag a taco on your way out cause this might take a while) step 3 hang out outside until they leave step 4 go back in and get 2 orders of combo tacos step 5 eat the best tacos in the world step 6 call your cell phone company, change your phone# so the terrible person you were with cant find you, cause they suck and you need to get better friends.

While the cat's away, the mouse will eat FRIED TACOS. This is my go-to spot everytime my healthy-eating boyfriend is out of town. Or when I have a killer hangover that only grease and a beer can cure. It's not very digestive-tract-friendly (think pulling the emergency stop cord on the 16th Street Mall bus) but that doesn't keep me away. Linda and Bob run this place - they are great and the rest of the staff is great too. Any place that won't judge me for getting drunk at 10am on a Saturday is A-OK in my book. They have really quirky hours and I'm still trying to convince a few of my friends that this place IS open for business and my meals there are not imaginary! On home game days, they stay open until just after first pitch. I've instituted Fried Taco Friday (FTF). Not only am I the founder, but I'm a member too. Actually, the only member now that I think about it.

A-OK tacos. Excellent michiladas (especially when the set-up's ordered with a cold Tecate). Downtown eatin' at it's greasy spooniness. Ummm ummm good.

  • Laura S.

You know, the beautiful thing about reviewing food is that everyone has an opinion... but when people suggest that the food at this restaurant is representative of "great authentic Mexican," I am virtually overcome by a compulsion to take them by the hand and gently lead them somewhere else. Like Los Carboncitos. Or Taqueria Patzcuaro. Greasy? Check. Government cheese? Check. Limp, lifeless, brown-edged lettuce? Check. Weird gray/brown chunks of meat? Check. Lost your appetite yet? Check.

Good place and good food. Nothing fancy but one of my fav spots to stop when I am downtown!

    (4)
  • Nicole W.

I've seen this little greasy spoon for ages now! I used to walk past it on the way to work, on the way home, on the way to the hairdresser and on the way downtown! It is only open for the lunch rush and ball games. So that also limited my ability to ever get there! Today we did it! I had heard mixed reviews but had wanted to experience it for myself. I can't say I was fully impressed, but that is also because I try to find "healthier" choices when I eat. There is nothing healthy here. I went with 2 steak tacos a-la cart - and the choice was fried. They came fresh from the fryer and with much of the oil still inside. The slice of avocado made it amazing though! Their salsa was pretty good as well. Nice kick if you get a hunk of jalapeno! They were busy and bustled around serving everyone there! My water glass wasn't filled to my normal need, but I know I'm not normal! This is definitely a comfort food kind of place, and all the fried and smothered goodness looked tasty, but it's not a kind of place for me! So go for the food and enjoy yourself. If you are trying to stay healthy, keep on walkin!

  • Abe M.

The tacos were good, but I prefer they more steak in mine please. I would eat here again, but only if I happen to drive by.

    (3)
  • Jerome J.

This is a great spot to eat and have a few drinks before a game. Parking across the street is also cheap. I had to try the fried tacos with a shot of patron on the side. I guess I got lucky and my tacos were not too greasy and packed with steak, lettuce and an avocado. There could be a short wait if you are planning to have a bite before a Rockies game.

    (3)
  • Mike M.

It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't great. The service was top-notch but the environment seemed a bit gritty and the food was in between "ok.

Menudo, fried tacos, and a pitcher of red beer on a Sunday morning. This is as close to perfection as you can get! Not mexican food in the way most would think, This is Classic Denver Chicano soul food served up by a family that has been taking care of the hungry (and hungover) for years. The tacos are legend. The green chile is hot, and the menudo is the best in town. Keep i mind that this is not health food; I'm sure the tacos can be classified as narcotic. If you come here and whine about the greasy tacos; you are sadly missing the point. This is food that generations could rely on, that remind them of grandmothers passed and of times that were more simple. This is a true Denver landmark. My family was going here before I was born, and while the neighborhood has changed, their mission hasn't. Keep on doing what you do best.

  • Andrea S.

Fried tacos... Cheesy. Greasy. But sooo delicious. And so much more fulfilling than those Jack in the Box tacos. I don't care that you're 99 cents because your meat is not as good as the steak at Mexico City. I was also lucky to try the chicken and beef, but the steak was the definite winner, with chicken next, and beef finishing last. I would give you five stars if you were open longer for my drunk munchies.

    (4)
  • Levi L.

It as a solid soft taco meal and the salsa was awesome. Their chips were gross and the service was terrible enough to affect my review. Luckily their soft tacos were that good- to retain 3 stars. I'd go a lot of places before swinging by here again.

  • Tina G.

Are you kidding me! That was my first thought when I took the day off to spend with my husband and he brought me to Mexico City for lunch! Oh man was I so wrong. I LOVE the fried tacos. I seriously could have licked my plate. There really isn't anything else to say other than "I'm sorry" to my adorable husband. I'm not even mad that its a heart attack on a plate because its sooo good. The best tacos ever. Not much atmosphere but everyone is very nice and you get your food quickly. Enjoy

  • KP H.

Oh so good yet OH so bad for me! Mexico City is perfect for those days when craving some greasy cheesy Mexican grub. We came in after a camping trip, tired, hungover and hungry and after a couple of margs, tacos and rellenos we were both satiated and ready for a big nap! I would've gone for 5 stars but the service was a bit slow and my dining buddies tacos were a little under done (they seemed rushed).

  • Jojo M.

My first time there last Wednesday; chips were good and salsa was nice. I ordered the steak fried tacos; okay flavor, but really greasy in a good kind of way. I'm glad I tried it, but next time will go for something different.

Great food, great prices and friendly service. Wonderful place for lunch or just before a baseball game. We go as a family, my husband loves the fried tacos and I usually order the green chili. The kids get off of the kids menu. We love the food and the casual atmosphere.

I got invited to go to Mexico City today and was suuper bummed that I missed out on my pasta marinara lean cuisine....not! No wonder I've never heard of this place! It's only open until 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays until 3:30pm but there's still an option for a morning or mid day cocktail. Walking into this little gem of a place, I'd only heard GREAT things about their tacos, steak to be specific, with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and avocado. It's the only thing myself and my four coworkers ordered. Oooh, they were good! Three tacos stuffed me and two would have been just perfect after all the free chips and salsa. It's a family owned joint for more than 40 years and I can't help but love that about Mexico City or really, any other restaurant. I hear it was newly remodeled and I dig the exposed brick. The waitresses were friendly and we got in and out. I want to come back and try the breakfast with menu items like pancakes, eggs, french toast and chocolate milk. It's served all day on the weekends! Until next time....

Fried chicken tacos, amazing!! They melt in your mouth, enough said! Great authentic mexican food.

  • John R.

This is a home away from home for me as I moved here from The University of Arizona. This is the authentic "dirty" mexican that I dream of when i go to sleep. I was lucky to find this as it was inbetween to stops on a pub crawl my friends and I put together. So we all decided to stop and eat. The staff was overwhelmed, but great to us. Then the food came. The authentic tacos made their way out and from the smell alone i could not believe there was a place like this in Colorado. If you are from the southwest and miss that good olde mexican and are sick of the Hacienda's and Rio's of the world, venture up Larimer and indulge. Random Fact: The staff likes it when you are dressed as a Ball Cleaner during a bar gold crawl. Helpful Hint: If you show up with 35 people get your drink at the bar, it helps everyone.

I dig it... I'm just happy I remembered enough to post this review. Sunday was a long day od Mexico City, Blues on Blake, The Falling Rock and Swanky's. I had the steak tacos and while a little bland, they dress up nice with some house made hot sauce and salsa. The salsa was very good and fresh and the chips are clearly made in house. I wasn't expecting service so I went in with low expectations. I was surprised as the bartender including himself in our covo about music and we had a good time with him. He and a n older gentleman (who was a little gruff) thanked everyone that was leavung and told them to please come back. I will certainly return to try the green chili and other things on the menu.

  • Kyla A.

Mexico City, the little dive (recently remodeled mind you) to nurse your hangover. Do not go here if you are looking for healthy options. That is not the point of this establishment by any means. I do enjoy their huevos rancheros, but the highlight of this place are the fried tacos. They are the guilty pleasure that so many people enjoy on the weekends. Don't be fooled with the Kraft singles slice of cheese they put in it, because there is simply something very satisfying about their steak and avocado tacos. I can't explain how or why, but somehow that taco is tasty and satisfying despite things like the cheese. If you have that unhealthy urge to eat something fried and you are in need of tacos, consider this long lived family owned and operated restaurant.

we discovered this hole-in-the-wall walking around denver.... it is behind coors field near pawn shops in a not so good part of town. ( the best restaurants sometimes). we sat at the bar, like usual, and the owner served us. i could tell that he knows his food is good. he definately was a "taco-nazi" when he ordered for me and my husband. he ordered four chicken tacos per each. i was blown away. i have eaten these types of fried tacos in pueblo,co. before.... these were AMAZING!!! i only ever get the chicken tacos here., so i do not know if the other menu items are good. they are so so so good that i need to fly to denver right now and indulge my craving. their hot sauce is the perfect compliment to the tacos.my husband and i can go through an entire bottle. also the tomato juice poured into my real coors draft * just tops off my meal in the best way possible. * i have not been there in awhile, but i heard they do not have real coors draft any longer, too bad. i am sure it was replaced with coors light.

Mediocre at best....I'm from San Diego where the Mexican food is banging and we ended up here kind of on accident since the place we were headed to down the street was slammed. I ordered the huevos rancheros....eggs were rubbery and the whole plate was covered in green chile sauce with some kind of chicken chunks in it. chips and salsa were good...coffee was gross...i think it was instant..who knows. The tortillas weren't fresh or homemade..i swear i buy the same kind from the grocery store. My husband had the breakfast burrito and he said it was blah and boring. cheap but i guess you get what you pay for.

I'm saddened by what they've become. I don't think Willy would have minded the cash the gringo hordes are bringing in but he would have lamented days gone by. The family used to also own the Juarez bar that was across the street. That space has changed a number of times since. I could tell you some horrendous stories about the old Mexico City but that never kept me out of there. What has kept me out of there lately is the food. The last three times I tried eating there I didn't care for this watered down version of the original Mexico City. Oh well. If you want the real deal and don't mind all the scariness (bad bathrooms and an old building) of the original MC try El Toro on Colorado Blvd that's owned by Willy's son Ed ( it's just north of I-70 ). But be forewarned breakfast and an early lunch only! The regular bar crowd comes in in the early afternoon and the kitchen used to be closed although a lady friend visited them in the afternoon and got served bad food and was visually acosted : ( for reiteration check out my review yelp.com/biz/el-toro-den…

There is no better taco to be had in this city. I miss Mexico City's tacos terribly since not eating meat, but I want to make sure they get the credit they deserve. There's a chain of restaurants in Northern California called Jimboys Tacos that is just incredible. The tacos are greasy and terrible for you. Mexico City is right up there with Jimboys as far as the most delicious, most unhealthy Mexican food you can possibly get. The Tacos are greasy, as promised. Get the steak tacos. Don't even bother with anything else on the menu. Steak tacos and a side of beans will do you just fine. They are cheesy, and yes, greasy, for the millionth time, SO greasy, but in the wonderful "I'm sinning so hard and I love it" way. I just can't rave enough about this place. This Mexican-raised cali girl is convinced.

I have been to Mexico City about ten times. Each time I bought the fried tacos. I find the cheese tends to overwhelm the tacos. Other than that I like them alot especially the avocados. I make my way over there at least once a month.

Popular lunch spot - so expect to wait, but it's well worth it. The fried tacos are unbelievable. Obviously, not the healthiest meal, but too tasty to not try at least once. I got the steak and chicken. The steak was definitely better - came with avocado, but the chicken was good also, so I'd recommend a 2-1 ratio of steak to chicken. The place was as clean as any other Mexican place I've been to and the servers were great.

As good as a fried tacos can be!!! Eaten at the Mexico City for years, long before Coors Field came into being nearby. Never ever disappointed. Friendly service and customers, even those folks at the bar who appeared to have been there since 8am! Guess they were really happy. Funky, no atmosphere, but killer tacos. GO!

We live around the corner and love this place. We will continue to go when we move. The fried tacos cure almost any hangover. It's all we eat here. We also love going there after a good, long run. No pretense here. Just good, hoke in the wall Mexican food. PS the people on here complaining about the quality of the ingredients or authentic experience are missing the point. You can ask for no cheese in the tacos or change the cheese. They're not trying to be a new, authentic place which caters to yuppies they've been around for 60 years. I liken it to a Mexican Diner. They do it their way, no more, no less. And it works.

Mexico City is probably my favorite place to go and hang out the day after a night of partying. Located in LODO and only open during the day, Mexico City has a great vibe and bar atmosphere and serves greasy Mexican food and excellent bloody Marys perfect at killing hangovers. I will be honest I have only gotten one thing on this menu, and that is the FRIED TACOS! That is what they are known for, and that is why I keep coming back. These deep fried, artery clogging death snacks are some of the best things ever and are a godsend after destroying your liver the night before. The beef fried tacos are excellent but the best ones are the steak fried tacos. Quality strips of steak, with avocado slice on each one, you can order in quanities of 3 or 4 depending on how gluttonous you are feeling that day. Also it must be said that this place serves up some of the best bloody Marys I've ever had. They are spicy and most of the time they are generous with the vodka. Their is an extra bottle of hot sauce on the table so if you're feeling crazy you can pour more hot sauce in your bloody Mary. If you come with three of four friends your best bet is to get a pitcher of Bloody Mary and you will all be feeling better in no time. This place closes at 3:00pm on Sunday and I think the latest they ever stay open is 5:00pm during the week so it is strictly a breakfast and lunch place. If you are looking for the perfect food to kill a hangover with a great bar style-atmosphere to kick it and hang with friends for a while Mexico City is your best bet.

Oh the fried taco. Mexico City is somewhat of an insitution in Denver. Family owned and operated for probably longer than I've been alive, they serve up some of the tastiest tacos you've had. Be prepared for some grease, though, as their tacos are fried. It's a unique experience, and the steak tacos are absoultely delicious. It's a fried tortilla shell filled with soft, delectable steak, something that resembles velveeta cheese (it might just be velveeta), a couple slices of avocado, some lettuce, and some tomatoes. They will give you a little squeeze bottle of salsa as well, and the salsa is a must. You will see a pool of grease on your plate, and that can be a little unappetizing, but the overall taste of the tacos is delicious. This is a great place to stop in for lunch, and even better to stop in just before a Rockies game. A plate of tacos and a few Coronas before hitting Coors Field is a nice way to relieve some of the pressure on your wallet, and those greasy tacos will keep you full for a while. They have other food, but I've only had the tacos. The chicken tacos are pretty good too, but they aren't served with the avocado and they don't have as much flavor as the steak, but they are still good. You're looking at $7.00 for a plate of 3 chicken tacos, $7.50 for the steak. Complimentary chips and salsa as well (I think the first one is free, they might charge yo ua buck or so, I don't recall). If you are looking for bright, healthy food, you will be in the wrong place if you eat here. Be prepared for flavor, cholesterol and calories.

Their fried tacos are the BEST! I like the chicken, the cheese is so melty and gooey. My better half prefers the steak. I think he only likes the steak better because of the avocado. Here's the solution, ask for avocado on the chicken-duh.

i ended up here for brunch after trying to go down the road to a hipster brunch place that had a huge wait. i was on my way to the mountains so after a long flight i wasn't in the mood to wait for food. my friend and i rolled into the mexico city lounge and got a table right away. nice for a saturday morning. the wait staff was very friendly and we got a bowl of chips and guacamole wicked fast. i had a smothered breakfast burrito that was really yum, the green chile sauce was spicy and flavorful. my friend had the huevos rancheros and was satisfied. it wasn't high end, but overall a very tasty start to the day. so if in denver and you don't feel like waiting an eon for hipster pancakes, stroll down the road to this place and get your grub on. it seemed like it would be a cool place to drink too later in the day.

Well just don't go on Mondays... they are closed. I'm going tomorrow for lunch so I'll give you an update then. So I went for lunch today and it was pretty good, I mean I didn't realize they were dubbed as "home of the fried taco". I ordered 3 tacos, one of each kind: steak, beef and chicken. It left me full but I left Mecixo City craving the hot server. Seriously.

Mexico City Lounge is fantastic greasy tacos. They are home of the fried taco! I had only been there for their breakfast burrito prior to my office moving right downtown. Do yourself a favor, and get a couple of the steak-fried tacos. Gooey goodness. I had never heard of such a thing as a fried taco before. The only reason they do not get all 5 stars is because their service is painfully slow.

Fried Steak Tacos!!!!!!!! The slice of avocado on each one is a slice of heaven. Sometimes you need to add a little salt yourself to the tacos, other times it's spot on.....so, take a bite before you make any seasoning additions. Chips and salsa was perfect. Can't remember what my friends got, I was too enamored with my tacos.

Great food!! I had their famous tacos, two chicken and one beef... one of a kind taste with corn tortillas, melted cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, I added slices of avocado to my tacos!! Chips and salsa an extra $2 bucks, bottomless! The salsa is very good, it's a smoked or roasted taste..

Well, I've finally made it to Mexico City. I can't believe this was the first time since I've lived 10 minutes away for 4 years. Anyway, here's what I have to say: (in Shia LeBouf's voice) DO IT! MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! Now, I didn't jump up and hug my waitress because I was in a tall stool, my waitress became a waiter then another waitress again and, honestly, I'm not much of a hugger. I went to lunch at 2ish in the afternoon. I knew I wanted the steak tacos and a Pacifico. My first waitress was pleasant enough, took my order, and delivered my beer cold and my tacos hot. Thats all I need. Then she left. The building. I came at shift change, no problemo. The taco sauce was a bit spicy and I love that too! The tacos were crispy and packed with meat and cheese then, after frying, lettuce and avocado. These were delicious! My hangover might have helped, but, I don't nitpick. As I was reading into the second one, my first waiter came to ask me how everything was. He timed it perfectly so that I had just taken that bit too big last bite and had shredded lettuce hanging down my chin like a swamp monster. I nodded my swamp monster chin at him and he smiled and left. He barely made it away with both hands. One staff member had a birthday so there was a song and cake. I do love a cohesive team! I finally finished and realized that one of the 4 waitstaff forgot to charge me for my beer. Of course I said something, cause I'm that grrl, and the last waitress comped it, thanking me for my honesty. The breakdown: good food, qood service, staff works well as a team with a common goal and honesty is appreciated. I can see this spot being busier at lunch or happy hour or before a game. My whole experience was everything I wanted it to be.

We got one of each fried tacos. (Steak, ground beef, chicken) The tacos were good....a lot of flavor, but I wouldn't say we were blown away. They use American cheese to melt it into the meat. Who uses American cheese in tacos?!? We also got "strawberry" margaritas. They were pink, but I wouldn't call them strawberry. The blended version was really huge chunks of ice and it wasn't a consistency that worked with straws. Overall it wasn't terrible, we enjoyed our meal and the price was right. We just have had and could probably have better Mexican in other parts of the Denver area.

Every Broncos home game should start with a trip to Mexico City. I recommend a Coors light and 3 or 4 fried tacos. That is a solid base with which to layer on some stadium beers. It's a game-day tradition!

Food is average. Margaritas have minimal alcohol. Service is good. The place closes wayyyyyyy too early- 7pm on a Tuesday! I ate the combo #3 and I wasn't disappointed but then again I didn't have high expectations. The taco shell was well done, the tostada was plain & the relleno was super small. The hubs had the steak tacos and he thought the tacos were average. Great place to eat before a Rockies game - we wouldn't go there for any other reason.

First time visiting and I had a great experience. I ordered the steak tacos and a short stack of pancakes, which apparently is a popular combo according to my server. The tacos were great. Fried delicious tacos with a good amount of steak, cheese and fixings inside. The added salsa was a bonus to the flavor. The pancakes were your good old standard buttermilk cakes and I can't complain about the basics. Had a few tequila sunrises with their house infused tequila and kept them coming because they tasted great and smooth. Definitely a must if you don't want to wait 3+ hours for Snooze and you'll get a breakfast that's just as good, but without the wait.

LOL!

    (1)

I'm a fan.

By far the best tacos in town. Great red beers as well. I would recommend to everyone. But I do not have to , the food and the great service speak for themselves.

  • Luke W.

Got the fried tacos. Was a very authentic feel and they were pretty good for the price. Good drink specials if you go during happy hour. I would say if you're looking for some quick Mexican, stop on over and get some tacos and a beer.

Their amazing crispy fried tacos earned them all Five of those stars. Nothing else matters.

It used to be the best Mexican food in denver, but it is now way too yuppified. I recommend el toro for fried tacos.

Get the fried tacos in the chili rellenos, follow that by a margarita... Should treat you right

  • Adam W.

Are you kidding, the fried tacos! I live in so cal, visit Baja every month, and have never tasted anything like their tacos. Amazing. I wished they stayed open later though. Great service too. I ordered the three different tacos......money. Not too pricey. Keep the Tecates coming.

Not a fan of all their food just the awesome tacos!! Been going here since I have as a kid and tacos are still the bomb, their pancakes are good too if your their for breakfast

The steak fried tacos are sinfully delicious! A little greasy, but I wouldn't change a thing. YUM!

Good Father's Day service, even though they were short handed,, The fried chicken tacos are bomb!! Go here!! Bloody Mary was off the chain

    (4)
  • Katrina D.

One word... TACOS! The best fried tacos in town. I love both the chicken and steak tacos. It's always great place to stop in for a red beer on the weekends. The staff is friendly and usually greets you with a smile. Service is usually pretty fast, even when they are busy with the lunch crowd.

If you want to eat "steak" tacos that are equivalent to dog food grade meat with American cheese... This is your spot. It might as well be called Mexico shitty

Best fried steak tacos on the planet. The rest is a bit boring, so stick with what brought you in and you'll leave happy every time ;)

  • Levi L.

It as a solid soft taco meal and the salsa was awesome. Their chips were gross and the service was terrible enough to affect my review. Luckily their soft tacos were that good- to retain 3 stars. I'd go a lot of places before swinging by here again.

Enjoy

GO!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
