I love Mecca when I want to get my Lebanese fix. The employees are very friendly, although they do a lot of take out I recommend having a sit down meal here. My boyfriend loves the seasoning on the chicken shawarma. I am a vegetarian so I get the vegetarian combo every time. Mecca by far has the best baba I have ever tasted! And this is a delicate dish can very easily be messed up. I know there are a few 1 star reviews but I say give it a shot and have a sit down meal at this delicious family owned restaurant.

I think you can manage a three-star meal here if you order and avoid the right things. What was relatively tasty: chicken kabob and the kefta patties What was decent: rice, falafel, hummus What was abyssmal: anything else containing vegetables. salad? avoid. pickles? avoid. fava beans? first off, more like pinto and garbonzo beans with trace elements of favas. doused in some sour gnarly something or the other. Also, I'm generally not a fan of lamb as it is gamey for me - this was not an exception to the rule (although at other middle eastern restaurants I've had non-gamey deliciously seasoned fresh lamb). I'll pass on the baba ghanouj as well. If you're ordering delivery, expect 1.5 hr wait even on off-peak hours. Apparently the delivery driver is "lazy" (woman on the phone at business's term, not mine). Will not order again from here as it's way overpriced for portion and quality. Veggies were border-line spoiled. If going the meat/veggie combo route, I'll stick to the Greek offerings at Melita's.

Stopped in here for lunch on a Friday after my fab haircut (thanks Bang Salon!!) on a whim. Ordered the mango strawberry juice (yum - not overly sweet...) and the lunch special (gyros, rice, and salad). Rice was light and fluffy, gyros were flavorful and salad was a nice way to round out meal. I would definitely come back!! Ambiance isn't much, but it's nice and clean and service was quick.

I got a kebab plate and the lamb, beef mix was good but the other lamb kebab was very chewy and ran the gamut from dry to slightly under cooked. Strange. The rice and hummus were good but this is hardly a reason to endorse a place when the focus of the meal missed the mark. I came at night and immediately noticed the hospital lighting which killed the mood of the place. A hole in the wall needs to at least be inviting. I could see it being nicer in the day. Service was friendly but also a bit slow. At 7PM we were the only people there but the gap between the appetizer and the meal was surprisingly long.

Too spicy and not really delicious. I do not recommend.

Just ordered earlier tonight and I'm extremely disappointed. Bland food, falafels we definitely not fresh and had a "stale", hard texture to it, and veggies were really soggy... Their beef kabob sandwich was alright but bland. Food came hot, which is the only thing I appreciate. Would definitely not come here to have my falafel cravings fulfilled.

  • Caroline B.

Just ordered tonight, the falafel was cold, hard exterior, and very dry inside. Stale really, was not made fresh. The pita came in a brown paper bag, the bread was stale too. They were so thin and tasteless, when I popped them in the toaster they came out like crackers. Usually they are fluffy, soft and warm inside. The platter was sad. Lots of white rice, which seemed like it was cooked this morning, because it all fell to bits, usually fresh rice is warm, soft, and fluffy. Salad was decent, but there was so little of it. Hummus was tasty. Asked for the fresh lemonade but they were already sold out, at 6:45pm. So that was a bit disappointing. Don't think I will be trying this place again. Sorry.

Walked in Mecca Grill for lunch on last Sunday, the place was empty. I was the only customer the whole time I was there. I ordered the vegetarian combo. The tabouleh was excellent but everything else on the plate was just so so. My major complain is the portion was too small. The combo is also missing falafel that other Middle Eastern restaurant would normal have in a vegetarian plate.

I wanted to like this place but it proved to be difficult. I did like the fava beans but that is about the only positive thing I could say. We came at lunch to an empty restaurant and we were hoping to have a quick lunch. Service was slow food was dry and there was a no shit cockroach crawling on our table.

Ordered takeout last night and was pleased with the service and food! The woman who answered the phone was so amicable and friendly. My boyfriend ordered the chicken kabab plate, and I ordered the meat combo plate to try the different types of kababs. When he came back with the food my boyfriend had the biggest smile and explained that when he went to pick up the food, while he waited the woman from the phone had given him tea, the cooks had waved to him, and the woman even asked about me! We both really appreciated the customer service! So thank you Mecca Grill. I am of middle eastern descent, and the chicken kababs were my favorite of all the ones I've tried! The kafta kababs (chicken and beef) were nothing special, and the lamb kabab was good enough. The fattoush and hummus were fantastic- some of the best I've had in Denver. The portion sizes were good. Will be coming back! Mmmmm!

Ordered on the Eat24 app. It took almost 2 hours to be delivered and then the food was super dry, basic, and boring. I was so disappointed.

Stopped in for lunch on a Monday, we were the only ones there. Service was friendly, and the food was great. Chicken kabob and hummus were on point. Tons of food, had plenty of leftovers. Reasonable as hell. Good stuff.

Q: why did they name this restaurant "mecca"? A: because after one pilgrimage here you'll never go back.

  • Lucas H.

I don't usually write reviews, but when looking for a new place to eat I saw the Mecca only had mediocre reviews and having had a great dinner there 4 or 5 times now I had to give them a good review. The highlight is definitely the food, followed closely by the friendly but shy staff. My favorite meal was when we had the time and money to order a lot of different appetizers. Every one of the appetizers was delicious as well as the sandwich I got an an entree.

Ordered food for delivery. Was told it would take 45min-1hr. Food came 2hrs later and half my order was missing and the other half of my meal was cold. Called the business and had to raise hell to get a refund, told them I didn't want their cold food and that they could come pick it up if they wanted. They tried to offer me $5.00 towards my next meal. Hands down the worst Greek food I've ever had.

I purchased a restaurant.com certificate for Mecca Grill while searching for a Mediterranean restaurant to go to with my sister when visiting her in Denver. I'm glad I made the purchase. We wenton a weekday afternoon and were the only table there. I presented my certificate and was first informed that it was only for dinner, but then the waiter returned and said it could be used so long as we purchase the minimun required amount, $37.50. We had to order quite a bit (2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts) to reach this amount- we left stuffed and with plenty of leftovers. We started with the grape leaves and falafel- both were delicious and quickly devoured. For entrees, my sister ordered the beef kebabs and I ordered the chicken shwarma. The flavors were rich and fresh and it was so easy to over eat- especially the delicious yellow basmati rice. We ordered the baklava for dessert, which was also heavenly. I'm taking off a star because the lemonades we ordered weren't included in the minimum we had to spend, which I thought was a little strange since he really pushed them on us and other restaruant.com participants always include non-alcoholic drinks in the total. Our waiter was a little blunt/serious but this may have been a cross-cultural thing. He made a remark about "seeing if my certificate is valid" as if I was trying to pull a fast one (I'm guessing someone used a fake certificate in the past?) The service was still good and the food came out very quickly. My sister is looking forward to going back with her bf.

I went into Mecca to grab a quick bite to take back to work for lunch. The restaurant was empty and I asked to place an order for take out. The gentleman said "we don't do that, sorry". I do not know why an empty restaurant would refuse business, so I asked why. The man said that the "owner wasn't happy". I saw a sign that they are under new management, but it seems they just do not like doing work.

This place did not rock my casbah but may need to give it once more chance before completely writing it off. I stopped by here yesterday as a pit stop coming home from a bike ride. I have passed by this place numerous amount of times, always curious as to whether it was legit or not. Seeing it was open on Memorial Day was a huge plus then seeing they had a couple of tables outside made it even better. I walked in and wasn't sure what the set up was, they have a counter but had one man working the tables so I wasn't sure if you sat and ordered or ordered at the counter. I ended up ordering at the counter and their sandwiches are way cheap ($3.50-$6.50) I usually order a gyro or falafel but decided to walk on the wild side and get the lamb and beef schwarma. Disappointed is the best word to describe it---it took forever to come out (I think there was only one guy working so I can excuse it and he was friendly), I had to ask for water three times before I got a glass and was not given silverware or a napkin so I had to wipe my hands on my shirt-classy. The meat portion was generous but it was swimming in a sauce that I'm not familiar with and didn't taste well plus there was a huge chunk of tsaziki sauce at the bottom of the sandwich which I got to in my last bite. The table sitting by me was raving over the hummus so maybe I ordered the wrong thing, who knows. I will try them out again but I won't have as much enthusiasm about it as I did walking in the first time.

This place is closer to a 3.5 than 3.0 but fell a bit short of my standards. I had the lamb kabob and I thought it was alright. It could have been a bit juicier for my liking but it was a bit too chewy, too. I had the baba ganoush and it was pretty good. I thought the pita was dry and it was disappointing that it was not home made. The taboulleh was good as well but not excellent. I have lived near a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants so my expectations are pretty high. In general, I thought this was okay and probably pretty good for most who haven't had it before. I didn't like that I was nickel-and-dimed a bit (i.e. taboulleh wasn't included) and I felt like the food was just lacking a little something that would make it memorable and irresistible not to come back. Instead, I left thinking that I'd be fine finding another place. We came a little bit before the dinner crowd so we sat outside. This place is situated in a strip mall with pretty limited parking but they did a good job with the space they had to put a little patio outside. I also want to add that our waiter might have been one of the nicest I've ever had. He was really and tried everything to make sure we're happy.

Really good hummus, really bad delivery service. I've ordered a couple times through eat24 and have had one awesome, quick delivery experience, one mediocre one, and one that eat24 customer care had to cancel because the restaurant "closed early" but still took the order. The food is great, the prices are fine, and the service is largely execrable. I'd recommend dining in over delivery for sure. Edit: 5/15 I'm sad that I like the food so much, because their hours are kinda wacky, and the service isn't great. I just had another mystery disappearing delivery order- again, I got refunded by eat24 after waiting over an hour and a half. Two stars, because I wanted my falafel, damn it.

Mecca Grill is under new ownership and has a new chef, so give this place a second chance if you've been in years past! it's really fantastic and affordable too. The restaurant is small, clean and nicely decorated (great for a date or lunch with a friend or 2) and they have a small patio outside also. We were greeted warmly by the owner and given great tips about the best items to order. The two of us decided to ordered an array of veggie appetizers to share: tasty yellow lentil soup (vegetarian) with a side of lemon, Greek salad (deliciously fresh with feta, olives and red onions), hummus, fava beans and the BEST baba ghanoush I have ever tasted. A side of delicious falafel and fresh pita rounded out our meal - yum! Get a side of their house made hot sauce -made with fresh chilies and containing a more dynamic taste than most of the prefabs out there. Try the pickles too - they're delicious! And most plates are garnished with slices of pickled beets that provide a nice contrast to the hummus and baba ghanoush. We LOVED everything we ordered and can't wait to go back again.

We used to go here frequently but a lot of changes (smaller portions, less options that come with the meal) have made this a huge disappointment. I think they changed owners. Either way, ever since 2012 it has gone downhill. Every single time we go there, it manages to get a little worse. They did a stunning job with the meal when I first started going. Now, it is lackluster, flavorless, and the portion sizing is smaller than it was before. They also used to bring out a garlic sauce we liked without requesting for it, and now that is available only upon request (and not very fresh tasting). We had mint tea there once, and it was delicious (sweetened with honey or something else). This last time, it was not sweetened and it was bland in taste. I will not be going back to give it one more try.

I had dinner here last night on the recommendation of a friend. When we arrived, we saw the "under new management" sign. We decided to try it anyway. The service was quite weird. A waiter did come over immediately to take our beverage order. He then walked right out of the front door. No one else seemed to be in the restaurant. We only waited as long as we did because we were chatting away & lost track of time. After about 15 minutes, we were ready to leave when the waiter walked back in & took our order. We were hungry, so we stayed. Two of us ordered the meat lovers platter & one ordered the chicken skewers. They first brought us each a small plate of hummus & a basket of pita. The pita was warm & very fresh, the hummus was nothing to write home about. VERY bland & flavorless. When our entrees finally arrived, the presentation was quite substandard, as if I were in a school cafeteria line. My plate consisted of 2 beef skewers, 2 ground chicken patties, 1 ground beef patty & plain white rice & a small container of garlic sauce. I had requested my beef to be medium rare. 1 skewer was cooked perfectly, although, was not seasoned at all. The other skewer was do overdone & tough, I could not even cut it with a steak knife. Both the chicken & beef patties were so incredibly dry & salty. The garlic sauce only tasted of salt. I could not taste any garlic. The chicken skewers that my friend had, were equally dry. Needless to say, being a real lover of middle eastern food, I will not be returning here nor would I recommend it.

I'm having a very frustrating day today. Hungry after the game - Go Broncos. Tried Empanda Express Grill on Colfax (closed although they say on their website that they are open but weren't). So, I needed gas after driving all the way over there and Mecca is just across the street from my local gas station. Gassed up and headed in for a veggie combo. Doors were open but the only person is the place was a sweet but clueless Mexican busboy - the chef/owner/ manager - whatever was out and so "no food for me". Grrr - meccagrilldenver.com Keep your hours or change them. Obviously, things have gone downhill in the last year or so. I should have Yelped them for more recent reviews because all of the more current reviews are abysmal. I concur. You can totally do better than this. The new Byblos at 4th and Corona, though not perfect yet, is already FAR superior. Mecca is a joke now. Look at the dates on the reviews before you make a mistake and come here. Really a serious decline in the last year.

This is one of our favorite restaurants for Lebanese food. We love #9 the Hummus and Shwarma plate. Also great baklava. Friendly service.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend. Neither of us had been here before, and I had a coupon from restaurants.com . Great decision. Loved it!! I love hummus and ended up getting the Hummus with Shawarma. Yum!!! We did notice that there were quite a few typos in the menu with the word hummus though. Lol. We thought it was funny. Go check it out for yourself. The only reason I'm rating it a 4 is because the music or atmosphere could have been a little more. It was real quite, so it felt weird to talk. But the waitress was awesome, super sweet. And of course the food was amazing. Loved it! Will be back!

I must be on a roll, finding all these places I'm such a fan of recently! This place was great! Second visit here, very good food, reasonable prices, fast and friendly service. The shawarma and hummus plate was the perfect amount of food and included two pita slices, another side of hummus, and a small salad of cucumber and tomato. We even got to sample some of the lentil soup (which was fabulous, btw). Had to pass on baklava, or any dessert for that matter, because we were stuffed to the gills but left without that "this rock is going to sit in my stomach all night" feeling. Happy to live close to such a great place.

I just started going to this place. I love good authentic Mediterranean food and this place has got it. At reasonable prices too! I suggest getting the Meat Combo for $ 14-15, enough to feed 2 people. Comes with salad, hummus, beef kabob, chicken kabob, lamb, and chicken shwarma. Very nice employees, and delicious food. I will go again.

  • Nicole S.

So sad! Tried to visit again for another helping of their fava beans and vegetarian sampler (well after "opening," mind you), and the chef was sitting outside waiting for someone with keys to show up! Totally unprofessional and completely unacceptable. I can see why they don't post hours on the door (only on their website). What a waste.

FRIDAY MARCH 5th 2010 : A couple of weeks before the event, I went to Mecca Grill for a visit in order to make a reservation in person. On the actual day, when I arrived at about 18:45hrs ish, our table was ready for our group as part as a Lebanese Dinner Galore thru (I.C.E) meetup. We were given the menu and water promptly. To me, the menu or what they offer is kind of limited. But, the price of the food they offer is reasonable. By 19:00hrs some of my members order some Appetizers such as : * Hummus * Falafel * Tabouli 19:15hrs, the Appetizers came for the group. About this time, we were ready to make our order for our Main Entrees. At 19:40hrs, since I order the Lamb Shank, my order came with the Hummus with Pita bread. Since I have been starving, I ate my Hummus and Pita bread while waiting for my Main Entree to be ready. By 19:47hrs, the first Entree came for the group. If I could recall correctly, here are the Entrees of what my friends ordered that evening : * Hummus With Shawarma ~ this entree, my fren opt for Chicken. * 2 orders of the Meat Combo. * Gyros Plate ~ this entree comes with Slices of Beef and Lamb. * Falafel Sandwich * Chicken Sultani * Chicken Shawarma * Chicken Kabob About 20:00hrs then my Main Entree arrived. My main Entree was A-OK. I feel there werent any much flavor and my friends agreed to this statement. I think I am spoiled with the food I have had at another establishment sometime back in September 2009. To my better judgement, when I order my Lamb Shank, I order TO GO BOX of MEAT COMBO for Hubs. Since we are the biggest group that evening, it takes awhile for all the food to be ready. I want to support this establishment, so that is why I choose to bring my friends here for dinner but they fall short in certain areas. A little let down of disappointment. Perhaps the service could differ if we came here on a weekday night, instead of a FRIDAY. So if you want to bring a BIG group, please have LOTS of patience, since the service and the food will take a while to be ready. Above anything else, its the COMPANY that counts that evening for me. When I bring home the MEAT COMBO for Hubs, Hubs did not like it at all. Its pretty bland for him too. I also purchase some BAKLAVAS TO GO. Man, this thing is MIGHTY TASTY, and its slightly expensive for $2 a piece. Mecca Grill, I hope you can prosper in many years to come. I know its tough to open a restaurant in this difficult time. Hence I rate this establishment between 2.5 to 3 stars.

Very excellent hummus. Excellent falafel. Other things are less exciting, but falafel and hummus are the yardstick of a Mediterranean restaurant. The decor is lacking, and the service is pretty slow- maybe its that European influnce on Lebanon that engenders a laid-back attitude. (I had to walk back into the kitchen to get my bill, but they were nice and all). This is now my favorite Mediterranean joint in Denver, pushing Jerusalem Grill to #2 and Garbanzos to #3. Still have yet to hit Ya Hala, though, so stay tuned for that.

I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS PLACE! It is awesome! Seriously, the people who wrote negative reviews sound extremely high-maintenance. I come from a Middle Eastern family and eat at Mediterranean restaurants all the time - this one was definitely up to par. The food was excellent. The falafel is amazing. I really enjoyed the hummus, grape leaves, kofta, etc. My friends & I will be back regularly.

Been there twice, and would love to go back again sometimes. Its a small place but looks very exotic. The waiters are very nice and friendly. The owner came out and invited us to try some special made tea. We appreciated it very much. It was overall a good eating experience. I especially loved their hot source. Never had anything like that! very hot and tasty! The only thing I didnot like was no air-conditioning. This place is very close to Washington park. So. take a walk after the meal. Just another enjoyable evening! :)

My wife is from Dearborn, MI, so we fancy ourselves shawarma connoisseurs. We were excited that we lived within walking distance of Mecca Griil, but were quickly disheartened. The chicken shawarma sandwich was devastatingly plain. It was over sauced, but without that traditional garlic sauce. The pickles were actually raw cucumbers, and the chicken hadn't been spiced/marinated. The hummus was the saving grace, as it had clearly been made fresh and tasted great. I might give it one more shot to try the lamb shawarma, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

Outstanding. And Cheap. I've been here twice in the last few weeks with Hans O. If you order one of their delicious pita sandwiches they are all about $5. I always go with the Chicken Kebob, wrapped with lettuce, cukes, tomatoes and sauce. I like to add cock sauce to spice things up a bit! They do have a dinner menu too that is a bit pricier, but probably still delicious. I've also had their baba ghanouj which had a sweet, nutty taste. Not what I was expecting, but still very pleasantly surprised. I can't tell you if this place is authentic by any means but it is surely a delicious, healthy and cheap dining option in Wash Park.

After a positive first experience I returned with a group of six. We had a variety of dishes and desserts this time. Hummus was again top notch, our favorite item as both am appetizer and with the entrees. Even had leftovers to take home this time. Keep it up Mecca Grill!

I ordered through Eat24.com and left a 20% tip (over $6.00). When the driver arrived, he tried to get me to tip again and pay for delivery. Food is good, but the scamming driver ruined the experience.

This was the go to place for my wife and I we ordered at least once a week for pick up. The service was always questionable but the food made up for it. There has been a change in the last month or so and the food is awful. This is the first time I have posted a review...I told so many people how great the food was here and am sad to say there has been a dramatic change for the worst.

I've lived nearby for 1.5 years. Initially it was good, it went way south for a while, but the ownership changed and it's great now. I eat here at least once a week. I swore off of it for about 6 months in the "bad times", but those times have passed and it's now better than it's ever been. Give it a shot again if you had a bad experience previously, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh man, this food is sooo delicious! My husband and I stopped in for our once a week free meal (free calories from our diets), and it was just excellent. I had the vegetarian plate for $11 which included the best baba ghanoush I have ever had, some tabbouleh, fattouch, hummus, dolmas, pita, yellow rice and falafel; All were excellent. The falafel was different than I am used to; both in texture and in taste. It seemed to have a bit of cinnamon, which I loved. The texture was a little light and crispy on the outside and nicely cooked and soft in the inside. The server made sure we ordered the fava beans, which I have never had before, and they were SO yummy. The service was excellent. I described it as warm and genuine. The guy was so attentive and not in an annoying way, it was in a most hospitable way. The star of the entire evening was the baklava.. Woah, I was scared at first bite, thinking about how much it would cost for me to continuously eat it for the rest of my life, and then I remembered I am on a lifestyle change diet. It was so delicious.. The BEST I have ever had, for real!! It chewed straight through, unlike the overtly nutty or crispy baks I have tried in dozens of other restaurants.. Super cinnamony, and just soooo gooooood. Do not pass the up. Definitely worth the money; we will be back!

Mecca delivers! Seriously, this is not good. Sushi and now Middle Eastern too? I may never leave home again. Someone said to me the other day, do you ever cook anymore? My husband answered for me...she has a phone & a debit card, that's the only 2 ingredients she needs! So now, the food, the most important part! It's good! The menu consists of the basics- shawarma, kabobs, sandwiches. The falafel is so good, I think it may be my favorite yet. I just wish you could get it as an entrée, not just an app or sammie. The shawarma and kabobs are ttender and seasoned well. Each entrée is served with hummus, rice, and pita. You get a decent portion for the price. Delivery is prompt. I recommend Mecca, especially for those in the neighborhood that can get it delivered! Jerusalem seems to get the most business in this area, which is a shame because I think Mecca is way better!

My friend and i who live a few blocks from the restaurant and have visited several times over the years were ambivalent about going but we were craving Middle-Eastern food. Hashem, our waiter greeted us warmly telling us there was a new owner and a new chef from Lebanon and the food was greatly improved. We were very excited! He suggested a few dishes for us; the fava beans, the hummus, and the lamb kabobs. He also recommended his special lemonade/tea spritzer which was wonderful. The meal could not have been better. The fava bean appetizer was delicate with fresh herbs and lemon. The baba ganoush was prepared fresh with roasted smoked eggplants that were delicate and tasty. My friend had the lamb and said she had never had anything so full of flavor and cooked perfectly. I really felt like i was lost in the middle east, it has the perfect ambiance that takes you away for a couple of hours. Hashem was gracious and generous with his attention. I suggest you try it or go back if you've been there in the past, it's vastly improved.

My g/f suggested this place after reading a review in the 5280 magazine. On a rainy Fri night around 7:30pm it wasn't very busy so we got seated straight away. There was only one lady running the place but she did a great job taking care of everyone including the steady flow of people picking up "to go" food. If you order an entree then it comes with hummus and pita bread which had me licking the plate clean :o) They were out of a couple of items on the menu but I ordered the meat combo which must be very popular as its now $13.95 :o( The chicken shawarma was a little dry but the other chicken and lamb were juicy. With a pile of rice and a salad on the same plate it was filling but I finished it all. No doggy bag for me!

Hook to the left, Shank to the right. At least that's how it goes in golf. At Mecca Grill, the Lamb Shank is the right thing to order. Lamb is my gauge for every Middle Eastern restaurant, with stuffed grape leaves (dolmades, dolmas or equivalent) a close second. Here I ordered both, apples to apples with Damascus. The shank was most excellent, a bit spicier than at Jerusalem or other some other local haunts, if a tad smaller. It's no secret that the menu looks like one or two other M.E. restaurants in town, the guy in the kitchen had a hand in creating a couple of them. The night I went, I had wonderful conversation with the Moroccan waitress, since I went at a late hour - it was almost as if we were dining together. I found out there is a sizable Lebanese, Palestinian, Jordanian and North African community here in whitey-Denver. It's not just the Eritrian and Somali cab drivers that take you to the airport. The all-important good, the less good, and the improvement list: GOOD: The hummus was fantastic, and the shank very, very commendable. A powerful combo. A Mighty Win. The LESS GOOD: The grape leaves were unremarkable, kind of soggy. I didn't get the impression that they'd been made recently. The pita was kind of stiff, and otherwise unworthy of praise. They were not the "tight and lemony" I was expecting. The NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: The atmosphere was "tried and foun' wantin'", meaning that the tables were sterile, the floors were sterile, and the lighting was sterile. I don't really recall any killer music. I hate to say it, and this will sound completely odd, but, the place should have been a little, um - dirtier. And I mean that in the nicest way. You could go into any Johnny Rockets and have your bacteria Geiger counter never ping above zero. Conversely, the Cherry Cricket would go off the scale, and you'd die if your mouth touched the floor. Everyone knows how awesome the Cherry Cricket is, but part of its lustre is its lack of lustre. Mecca will do well with a more broken-in look and feel.

Mecca Grill makes up for its decor and somewhat slow service with excellent food. This is a great place if you're looking for a quiet lunch or dinner. (The two times I've visited the restaurant, it's been completely empty.) I've tried the chicken shawarma and the chicken kabob platters. Both are equally good. You also get a ton of pita bread and hummus before each entree. (I think they do this to make up for their slow service. It's all good though as the pita bread and hummus are excellent.) An additional plus: you can listen to the cashier/waiter rant about various things to whoever is in the kitchen. That woman deserves her own reality tv show.

Delicious and really sweet family. I had the Vegetarian Combo (like a mezze plate), which had amazing baba ghanouj. Really good arabic coffee, too. Support this place, they're awesome!

It's been three years since I left the North Wash Park area, and I miss it dearly. One of the places I missed is Mecca Grill. Mecca has gone by many names and many iterations (there used to be a hookah lounge room adjacent the the restaurant). This latest iteration was disappointing to say the least. I walked in, was greeted by the friendly guy, and sat. So far, so good. I ordered my plate and received my requisite hummus/pita appetizer. Still delicious. My hopes were high. The omen of all things to come was the one-inch long cockroach crawling towards my table. I swatted it away and was filled with a feeling of disgust and dread. Food arrived shortly after. While my falafel was near-perfect, everything else was a flop. The rice was, as my daughter put it, "too little and squishy to eat". The chicken and beef were dry, the lamb overspiced, the dolmas slimy, and the fatouh too dressed. It was so disappointing. I'd give this three stars for the awesome hummus alone, but the roach killed the experience. I won't be coming back next time I come through town. Back to Jerusalem's I go...

The worst spot in Denver. I recently ordered delivery from Mecca and 30 minutes after I did the young woman called me and told me that they were out of lamb and asked if I'd like chicken or beef instead. I opted for the beef and got a call an HOUR later stating that the driver "couldn't make it" and I could go pick it up myself. I've never dealt with a situation like this, literally the worst service I've even gotten or heard of. I'd steer clear of this spot and will NEVER order from them again.

Yummy! Good food, good prices, large portions. I really enjoyed this hidden gem & will be returning. It didn't give 5 stars bc of the ambience - there isn't much. We tried the meat platter & the veggie platter to split between 3. It was awesome- well prepared, fresh & plenty for all of us.

Still a big fan of this place. My wife and I again were very happy with the kabobs (chicken and lamb). The flavor is really well done. Peppery and moist, and the flavor of the sauces matches perfectly with the meat and veggies. Slight char to the whole kabob. Even down to the spicing on the rice. All well balanced and delicious. We had falafel and salad to start. The falafel was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside with excellent flavor. The salad (fatoush) was also refreshing with fried pita every now and again for good texture. Dressing was not too heavy or light. The hummus is thick and creamy and the pita is very good. Service was also good. There were moments where we were beginning to wonder if our mail course was coming out but there was so much other food on the table that we picked at the hummus and pita or salad while we waited. As impatient Americans we probably could use a dose of waiting. Have some strawberry lemonade while you wait. Be warned though, it doesn't have 9 TBS of sugar in it so if you're into that kind of thing go to Mickey D's. Sounds like some people have had bad experiences here but we haven't so far. If you're looking to make dinner the object of the evening then try it out. If you need to get somewhere or suffer from knee jerk reactions to waiting a little bit for good food then don't. Hope this helps.

The food was really good. Thanks to a restaurant.com gift certificate from my mom (who randomly chose it from the web site--she's never been to CO), we got to experience Mecca Grill. Otherwise, I doubt we'd ever have found ourselves at that intersection or noticed this place tucked in the back of a strip mall. It's a sparsely decorated room, very casual. There was no music at first, then a loop of Enya songs (not even the entire album--we heard "How Can I Keep from Singing" several times). But it didn't matter, because the food was great. We didn't realize that everyone gets salad, hummus, and pita when you sit down (or at least that's how it seemed). We orderd fava beans and tabbouleh to start. I assumed the favas would be foul mudammas, a dish I love. It was different from other versions I've had, but delicious in its own right. It was tart from lots of lemon and had plenty of flavor despite being a relatively simple dish. The tabbouleh was heavy on the curly parsley with just a bit of bulghur and a nice mint flavor. Note on portions: each appetizer seems designed to feed about four people. We had a minimum for our coupon, so we ordered more food than necessary. But we had plenty of food to take home and enjoy as another meal. We shared two entrees (well, we actually brought home most of it since it the other food was pretty filling). The meat combo was served on rice and came with cucumber-yogurt dip and more salad (their dressing is excellent!). It had a bit of everything: kabob beef, lamb and chicken, some shawarma, and a kofti kabob (ground meat that is grilled). The kofti and the chicken kabob were standouts. The other entree was chicken shawarma w/hummus. We didn't realize we'd get hummus to start or that shawarma came on the combo. But it was delicious nonetheless. Whew! We stopped eating because we knew we'd need to order dessert or coffee to reach our minimum (should have brought friends!) for the coupon. The Turkish coffee was interesting. It was sweet and had flavor, but it still tasted a little weak, almost watered down. There wasn't as much of the coffee sediment as I usually find when I order it. Not bad, just different. The baklava was heavy on cinnamon and very wet with honey. Good stuff. Service was a little awkward. Our server seemed nervous and came back to confirm our order. We pre-bussed our own table, stacking appetizer plates and glasses at the edge of the table to make room for the entrees we shared. Appetizer and entree plates were finally cleared after dessert was served. Prices were quite reasonable. Normally I'd order a vegetarian combo as my entrees, but at $8.95 I knew we'd have a hard time reaching our minimum purchase for our coupon. But I also knew I could come back for an inexpensive and hearty meal that is way better for me than a $10 pub burger. In all, we got quality food at a great price. Definitely worth a visit. It might even be a good place for takeout, since I think Lebanese food can travel well (unlike most other foods, in my opinion--I've got takeout issues). We left full and happy, with delicious leftovers to enjoy the next day.

Loved this place! I had the Meat Combo ($10.95) which turned out to be one of the best I have ever tasted - the generous portions of various meats were lean, succulent and perfectly-spiced (the cubes of marinated chicken breast were exceptionally good). The accompanying rice was steamy-hot and buttery, and the salad was fresh and crisp (the Italian dressing liberally slathered on top was a bit weird, but who cares). His Vegetarian Combo was also tasty (I'm not a big falafel fan but theirs were especially amazing) and, at $8.95, was a great deal. Our server was MIA for most of the meal but the cook guy was super friendly and helpful. Like a lot of strip mall restaurants, this place doesn't look much from the outside but it's cute and cozy inside. Prices are crazy reasonable too (entrees $9-$11; sandwiches $3-$4). I'll be back!

Great place! Was there yesterday, had Fatoush salad, fresh and just right, Chicken Kabob sandwich with tahini sauce that was spectacular. The waiter was wonderful, he suggested a tea that was not on the menu made of lemonade, mint, and I can't remember what else...it was yummy and refreshing. Would definitely go there again and try their dinner platters, very reasonable, clean and great food !

Let's start by saying this... my wife grew up in Dearborn, Mi, and I worked there for 5 years. Dearborn has the largest population of Lebanese outside the Middle East, and the restaurants there have to be good, or they'll go out of business to Mom's cooking. We KNOW good Lebanese food. After searching for several months for a decent Lebanese place, I think we've found it. Let's say this... my wife immediately said, "this is right on my way to school." Let's be clear. This is NO WHERE close to her way to school. It is, however, good enough for her to try to rationalize the detour. :) I'll keep this short and simple... Fatoosh - not as much lettuce as we're used to, and the green peppers were an unexpected addition. Also, didn't notice any sumac. However, the mint was just right, and the flavors were right one. Lots of cucumber and tomatos. Tabbouleh - flavor was also right on. It was a very juicy consistency, which is a nice change to the dried-out tabbouleh we've found in other places. Falafel - the true measure of a Lebanese restaurant. If these are good, everything else follows. These were really tasty. Super fresh, not "too" fried (as in, nice thin crunchy bits), and tasty, fresh on the inside. Probably some of the better falafel I've ever had, actually. Hummous - smooth, with spot-on flavor, as well. (I think the guy cookin' might know what the hell he's doing...) :) The rest of the meal was chicken kebab sandwich for us, but to be honest, by the time I got to that I was stuffed and the good flavors were probably lost on me. I REALLY need to go for a walk at this point. :) Overall, the best we have had in Denver (but we'll keep looking as we rely on Mecca for our Lebanese fix). If this were in Dearborn, it would probably be 3.5 to 4 stars, but for this quality in Denver, it's a definite 5 star effort. The prices were very reasonable for what we've found elsewhere, and also compared to what we're used to. Good job - we'll most CERTAINLY be back, and soon, and probably often, too.

Never had Lebanese food before, and my friends from out of town had heard of this place and begged me to go with them. I LOVED IT!!! I will always be a customer of this place. The food was great, the service was beyond what I expected. They are so polite AND the owner came out and served my dog a huge lamb shank bone. My pup didnt even want to go on our hike anymore. My friends want to go back before they leave and I think I will be very happy to go back as well.

Quote from my boyfriend: "This may have been the worst restaurant I've ever been to". We live in Wash Park and always eager to support the neighborhood restaurants. We ordered the falafel appetizer, the meat plate (BF) and the gyro plate (me). Falafel was crispy and tasty...so "pro". Thats, unfortunately, where the compliments end. The gyro tasted like my elementary school cafeteria was trying their hand in middle eastern fare and the meat plate tasted like packing peanuts...not good. I've never seen my boyfriend try and salt something so much. Service was bad as well; however, I'm usually willing to forgive service when the food makes up for it. Seems like everyone had gotten the memo seeing as we were the only people in the restaurant. Where were all the folks that have written good reviews?

I had driven past this place several times and decided to pop in for a late lunch while running errands. The place was deserted on a Tuesday afternoon but the server was friendly, and put me anywhere I wanted. The prices were decent..maybe a dollar or two on the high side, but the food was great. I had the Kafta Kabob sandwich, which had a kabob a lot larger than I expected. It is a mixture of lamb and beef, seasoned with onion and spices that brought me right back to the kabobs I used to eat in Baghdad. The flatbreat it was wrapped in was warm and nicely crisped on the edges, and the tahini sauce was done perfectly.

I was a big fan of Sunnin in West LA and was looking for a new Lebanese place now that I'm in Denver. Success in my first try. Mecca Grill is my place! I had the Chicken Kabab plate and Bacclava. The Chicken Kabab was great - chicken was tender with a very good marinade. Hummus was great too - maybe a little thin in consistency. Very reasonably priced! The Bacclava was awesome - had plenty of the nut filling. Great place!!

From positive to love! My boyfriend and I dined in this time with my restaurant.com $25. I left my comfort zone and we ordered the baba ghanooj and one fatoush salad as an appetizer. When you order your dinner entrees you are given hummus or "homos" as they spell it and warm pitas. We asked for extras and got more free of charge! Their hummus is where it's at my friends. The baba ghanooj had a sweet taste to it. The fatoush salad was large pieces of green pepper, tomatoes, onion and cucumber with a delicious light dressing. All were amazing. For the main entrees, Lamb Kabab and Chicken Shawarma. I wasn't so impressed with the chicken last time but this time, it was so moist (I hate that word but it was!!) The lamb was tender and flavorful and the long white rice was cooked to perfection. The salad on the side was great in between bites. Four guys sat at a table across from us speaking a language I don't know and were drinking what looked like a cool Mediterranean drink, I had to ask the manager! He said they were drinking mango, strawberry and OJ. Haha...I was really expecting a fascinating drink order! Okay...we're not pigs but we had to get a piece of their baklava. We decided since we just ran Wash Park that we owed it to ourselves...very good, top five for sure. For the normal diner without a coupon, you get A LOT for your money and the dinner entrees come with everything you need with major leftovers...but if I have to recommend something, it would be the baba ghanooj as an appetizer. Enjoy!

I had a friend recommend the Mecca Grill and we gave this place a try. We were very pleased with the food, service and price. We eat out a lot and have 12 restaurants within walking distance. We live near 1st and Broadway and we will definitely get in the car and go back to this place. BTW, the Mecca Grill has new owners and a new chef. A salad for each of us was brought out quickly. Some hummus and bread shortly thereafter. The hummus was outstanding as well as the Lebanese flat bread. I had the lamb Kabob and it was as good of lamb as I have ever had. My wife had the vegetarian plate and loved it.

What a joke. Ordered delivery, the entire thing was wrong. Entrees are supposed to come with a salad, hummus and 2 pitas. I got instead a few chunks of iceberg lettuce, 2 pieces of tomatoes, no dressing - at all. Not even bottled junk. No hummus, they gave me babaganoush. Didn't ask for it and really don't like it. No pitas. Of course not having hummus I would have no use for them anyway. Ordered grape leaves and they gave me falafels instead. Again, didn't ask for it and really don't like them. When I called to complain they said they were out of grape leaves, so naturally instead of calling me back to let me know that, they assumed I like falafels (seriously, I really don't enjoy them). Guy says 'you like hummus, we give you hummus. Ten minutes'. Sure. I'll hold my breath while I wait. NEVER again.

This Lebanese restaurant, named after a Saudi holy city, is actually run by a Moroccan family. Don't ask me, I'm as confused as you are. Sometimes brown people just don't get other brown people. But I do know 3-stars on Yelp translates to "mish baatel" in general Arabic.* They don't have a hookah bar anymore, which is an automatic two-star deduction from my book. The lamb chops, however, were delicious as was the fun service and company of Hans O. and David S. So all mixed together, it was A-OK. I have the perfect formulas in my head to justify these ratings, so perfect they even work in other languages. I'd still recommend Gypsy House for hookah. *Or so help me God if it actually means something else.

So I've had to edit my review. This makes me a little sad to do this, but I feel like I should! We went back to Mecca after not having gone for a LONG time. It turns out that the prices have gone up as much as 3 dollars on some things. I went thinking I was going to be getting the same ridiculously good food at ridiculously cheap prices. I realize prices have to change, but that's quite a steep jump! The food is still good with good quality ingredients, but I probably won't be going back for a while (hey, I'm in a one-income household right now!). Our waitress was nice enough...not as awesome as the one we had before, but hey, that's okay. I still like the atmosphere of the place, it was just pretty disappointing to find out about the price changes that way. But hey, at least they do delivery now!

Salaam 'Alaykum. This is Moroccan family owned restaurant with great Lebanese food that is priced right and made fresh. Perfect for lunch or a cheap eat almost anytime. The food is homemade tasting and served quickly by a friendly staff. It'a a very simple diner-ish feel and tight wallets looking for great flavors would be satisfied eating here. Don't miss the falafels! Only drawback, no harissa sauce served (I mean, they are Moroccan, right?), but the sriracha on the tables was not a bad runner-up. Mecca Grill is a great little Denver treasure. Make a pilgrimage to Mecca Grill, and you (and Allah) will be glad that you did!

I came here for lunch on a sunny weekday (on my way to Washington Park). I happened to be craving Lebanese and behold, there this place was. I sat outside and ordered a lunch wrap with Syrian sausage. It was hot, fresh and tasty! I had a baklava for dessert and though it wasn't as fresh or good as Ali Babba's, it was decent. I will be back for lunch. I haven't checked out the dinner menu yet.

OMG, wow...great food for SUCH a great price! I have been to Mecca Grill several times for their hummus (YUMMY!) and falafel pita sandwich. No joke, the falafel is only $3.25! It's a good size too...definitely enough for a meal. The falafel is full of flavor and delivers the perfect consistancy: crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside. The decor is sparse...this isn't the place to go if you're trying to impress someone. However, the food is great and cheap. Perfect for take out. The family who owns the restaurant is really nice and always very polite and helpful. I don't know how they stay in business...every time I've come here, the restaurant is empty. Maybe they do catering? Not sure, but I really enjoy their food.

If I had the option to leave 0 stars I would! I went to Mecca Grill last night. I can not comment on the food because while we were there for 45 minutes we never ate or drank anything. When we first went to walk in there was an employee in front of the door talking with someone in the parking lot. He pretty much shut the door in our face. Ok, no big deal he didn't hold the door. We walked in the half the tables were still dirty, but we were literally the only ones in there. They didn't ask to seat us they pretended like we weren't there. So I asked if we seat ourselves and he made some gesture that was kind of a yes. We picked a clean table. 15 minutes later still no clean tables in the place and no sign of anyone, and then menus are put down on the table. No water no nothing. We do not see anyone for another 15 minutes again. I gave the server a coupon I had and actually asked me if I had read it because he didn't want to explain it to me. Of course I read it. He walks away. 10 minutes later he comes back to take our order, still no one is in the place and it is now near 6pm. We go to order. No grape leaves, no lamb. Fine I go to order something to go that I already knew I wanted to take home for my boyfriend, while I look over the menu again and he tells me if I order anything to go he will not take the coupon, because it says for dine in. Dine in for buy one get one free entree so my dinner guest and I can't use the coupon if I order something to go...even though we are eating two entrees there. After near 45 minutes of no food and they won't honor my coupon we finally left. Not even did I get water! I would never go there again! In fact I wish I would have never tried! There are so many amazing Middle Eastern places in this great city! Why would anyone go there! Well I have the answer to that one! It sucks!

This place is really a nice spot especially considering the price. I ordered everything I even had a slight craving for and enjoyed it all. Food quality was probably 90/100 if shish kabob was the benchmark at 100. The attitude / grattitude of the owners and servers is FAR better than shish kabob or house of kabob. It is clean and cozy, and it is one of those place that you really hope succeeds. I will be returning to Mecca soon!

We were drawn here by the 5280 gusher of a review from Daliah Singer, who from now on will not be paid attention to in that magazine when it comes to restaurant reviews. We experienced the same dining as the reader who one-starred this joint below. We were at dinner for TWO AND A HALF HOURS. People sat at their tables for half an hour before even being served. The drinks were really good, albeit quite pricey, I really enjoyed the lavender flavor of them. The flatbread while good was gone in 15 seconds because IT TOOK NEARLY 45 MINUTES FOR OUR ORDER TO BE TAKEN. The only reason we didn't walk out was because the waiter seemed like he was just over-whelmed, but we didn't know he was the cashier, the busboy and likely the cook. He wasn't the bathroom cleaner, because well, that would mean a person would have to go in there to make what almost seemed like an open sewage pit smell go away. Lastly they do NOT serve alcohol, and this is a traditional Lebanese restaurant, and people should be aware of that. The food? Meh. The sausage was strange tasting, I would not recommend it. The chicken tikka was fantastic though. But this place gets one star for service and a horrendous bathroom. I would NOT go here again.

After having excellent service experiences with a French language group, I returned in early January 2010 with friends to enjoy a hookah and learned that they had changed ownership, and that the hookahs were not available. Still a friendly place and a nice remodel.

Strawberry juice and a babaganoush sandwich, both were really good. The waiter, I think his name was Joshua, was helpful, friendly and attentive. My dinner dates really liked their meat dishes, too. Unfortunately, they were out of dessert, but I'll be back to get some later.

I have gotten takeout from the Mecca Grill before and was happy with my food. However, when I went there on 6/7/10 they had a posting of a fine of $500 for health code violations. I don't know how serious a $500 fine violation is, but I did see that they listed insect/rodent evidence present. I feel like people should have that knowledge before they make the choice to eat there. On the flip side, the cleanest place to eat is probably the one that just received a health code violation. Still--it totally creeps me out. Bummer...I really did like their food.

It started out good. The hummus and babaghanoush were fantastic. The falafels were perfect; lightly fried and tasty. I was almost most won over. Then the entree came. The meat was dry and could have used more seasoning. It was served on a bed of plain white rice. The salad was iceberg lettuce and from the jar dressing. Where was the flavor?

We really LOVED this place. The hummus and pita is really good. The greek salad fantastic and the schwarma is SO good!!!! I've been back now about 4 times since we found this place, and it has been consistent every time. We love Mecca Grill!

I have been on a quest of late for the BEST greek salad in Denver. I found it at the Mecca Grill. I tried Yanni's last week. I use to love it there but the salad was dismal. Even some of the lettuce had that pinkish tinge to it. I will not be going back to Yannis. The Greek Salad I had today at the Mecca Grill was JUST RIGHT. Fantastic even and the falafels I like to throw on top of the salad were PERFECT. Everything was very fresh, crispy and delectable. I loved the greek green olives instead of the ubiquitous kalamata olives. The pickles were a nice addition of acid as were the pickled turnip. Not too heavy on the dressing (homemade) and just the right amount of onioncs and feta. I will go back again. Next time I want to try the lamb kebobs. I live down the street from the"Little Gaza Strip". All are very good but much more pricey than the Mecca. The Mecca Grill is a value for your dollar restaurant. Look for me...I'll be there.

Mecca Grill is fantastic! The decor isn't great, sure, but I'd trade decor for food any day! Get the baba ghanouj! My boyfriend is Lebanese and HATES baba ghanouj but he loved it here. Go for lunch and sit on the tiny outdoor patio or order in. I cannot recommend this place more. I wish I saw more people in there because if it closes, my heart will cry. Chicken shawarma is delicious, so are the falafel and chicken kabob platters. Like David T. said, it used to be terrible here and people would only go for the hookah. Now it is OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS!!!!

    (5)
  • Lauren D.

Me likey!!! Falafel is for sure two thumbs up! And the sandwiches are SUPER cheap, I mean it, like $3.95 for a chicken kabob wrap. This isn't fancy or all done up by any means, but it is so delicious and affordable that I'm sure we'll come back again and again. Pretty sure your waiter is also who goes and throws your food together too, so be a little patient, it's worth the wait. Baba ganooj was blended perfectly, creamy and flavorful. GO there -- even if it's just for take-out.
