This place is Awesome! I live close by and it is always a great go to place when you are looking for good cheap food. The patio is great in the summertime as well. My only complaint, would have to be that the margaritas are a little sweet, but that never stops me from ordering a pitcher.

This place is solid, no-frills homemade-tasting Mexican joint. The dining room is clean. The food is tasty, comes out quick, and is reasonably priced. And they have a nice big cooler in the dining room where you can get a good look at your Corona or Negro Modelo before they bring it to your table. I had a chicken and guacamole tostada and it was great. Crunch tostada, creamy guac, and spicy chicken. My companion had the chicken fajitas, and there were sublime--I love it when the fajitas are cooked so the onions and green peppers get just a little char on them... mmm. They also have a good-sized parking lot, which is somewhat of a rarity in the Highlands and a sweet outdoor seating area at which you will most certainly be able to find me, Corona in hand, this summer.

This place was pretty decent as far as fast, cheap Mexican goes. Certainly better than any chain/fast food establishment, La Cocinita filled up my belly with plenty of horchata and refried beans, which is only slightly lower on the ladder of food greatness than bacon.

GRINGOS NOT WANTED!!! Our waitress gave us horrible service. She seemed to focus all her of her attention on the latinos at the other table. I guess my gringo money is no good here. When we received the food, it was cold like leftovers. We ordered nachos as an appetizer which did not come until the food. She dropped off the food and disappeared. We were even having a margarita which would have been impossible to order another even if it was wanted. When we were ready to leave we had to go up to the counter to ask for the bill. I have never walked a tab but I should have on this one. I told the lady that I was disappointed in a polite manner and the was cold food. It was the oh well attitude. "Lo siento"...I always give establishments the benefit of the doubt but seriously maybe a half hearted sorry would have made me feel better about being ignored by the waitress and being served left overs. There are too many other great mexican establishments in the neighborhood to eat here.

This place is good. Inexpensive & large portions. I think it used to be an auto garage or something. It has outdoor seating and is a nice place to enjoy some tasty tacos...etc. I recommend the crispy chile rellenos. This is one of my favorite taco joints on the north side of town.

Best kept secret in the Highlands. This is authentic Mexican food. You can go everywhere else if you like to let the foodie bourgeoisie tell you what you're supposed to eat, or you can sit down with some nice and respectful down-to-earth folk that cook Mexican food as it should be... From Mexico... Where all food is organic. If you can get there on a summer day you will love the patio. Either sit in the sun or be shaded by a nice pine. Your choice. Then enjoy a sizzling fajita, cold margarita, or a bucket of corona. I love this place!

Been coming here a long time. Not sure what's up as of late but the chips and tortillas aren't being served up hot anymore. New management maybe?? Hope they fix this so I can bump em back up to 5 stars! Love the patio vibe and the Margs are tasty bizness.

Service was sub par. Food came out fast but the server took FOREVER getting the check. Food was okay. The cheese inside my enchiladas wasn't melted. Sitting outside was nice.

There is just something about the classic Mexican dishes that bring comfort to the soul. And eating that in a bit of a dive is even better. The chips and salsa were served warm and the salsa was very good. The chili relleno plate was good and hit the spot. Not a lot of spice in either the green chili or the chili itself. I would bet the chili was from a can. I opted for the soft chili relleno so it was really more of an omelet with chili and cheese. The beans were more of a whole bean pinto situation which I enjoy. The rice was not the best rice I've had in a Mexican restaurant but not the worst either. The service was very fast and very friendly. My whole tab was $7 so you can't beat that.

Steak rancheros was ok, it wasn't the same as I remembered. I still ate it, it was good. I loved this place years ago, it was one of the better Mexican places in that area. A couple things have changed, but it wasn't horrible. I'll give it another try.

Go-to neighborhood joint. Fantabulous. Why even inquire about other Mexican food in this neighborhood? I don't know.

La Concinta is a no frills kind of establishment. The food is decent, it's fast, and best of all its cheap. The service is always speedy, the chips and salsa are dangerous for someone like me that love love looooves chips and salsa. Overall we come here when it's one if those crazy week days that don't allow any time or energy for cooking dinner.

This is a small restaurant with a pleasant family atmosphere, and DELICIOUS Mexican food. It's always full, the staff is all business, not over friendly, but the service is pretty fast. The patio has lots of shade, great spot to hang out and enjoy a margarita.

What a gem! Tucked away just north of Sloans Lake and west of the Highlands lies this no frills but welcoming neighborhood Mexican joint with numerous options for cheap. I had the chicken enchiladas, which were good and filling, but could have used a tad more flavor in the sauce. My girlfriend had the carnitas tacos, which were fantastic! Lots of flavor, tender, and juicy. They even had a little bit of crispiness as if they were quickly fried on the griddle after slow roasting. Some of the best carnitas I've had actually. My choice of enchiladas was primarily due to a craving for the dish, but that was almost derailed by numerous other tasty sounding options, including the carnitas. They have everything from your usual fares to steaks and pork chops. And the best part is all were below $10, with most being around $7. That includes the ribeye dishes, which I don't know the quality of, but intend to find out. Cozy, cheap, and tasty. What else do you want from a Mexican restaurant, free chips and salsa? Oh yeah, they have those too.

This place is dirt cheap but pretty tasty! I'm rounding up based on that. I loved my chile relleno and tamale plate for $6 and was happy to learn they would sub whole beans rather than refried. Sometimes I am just in the mood for whole beans. The chips and salsa are tasty, beers cheap, margs under $5...what's not to like? Perhaps a bit divey but service was fast and excellent. The menu offers just about anything you could dream up, and in various combinations, almost all for well, well under $10. Large (but not obscene) portions - I couldn't finish my whole plate. It's not fancy Mexican but it totally hit the spot on my visit and reminded me of the Mexican restaurants my family would frequent when I was a little kid.

  • Hunter L.

The patio here is perfect. It's shady, lots of space and cleanish. The normal crowd is a bit older and quiet but that's good. (I think) The food is pretty tasty. I Had The Grande Taco With Beef. It was exactly what I needed. My lady friend had the tacos adobado. Also very tasty. The meat was very juicy which made the tacos fall apart so that's my only complaint. You couldn't eat it with your hands. Service and everything else is great. Don't tell anyone. Don't need this place turning into a Highland mommies hang out.

Everyone seems to carry around in their brains the answer to the question "what's your favorite Denver Mexican restaurant?" Now maybe the name of the place that you give as an answer doesn't have the world's best service. Hey, maybe it doesn't even have the best Mexican food you've ever tasted. But you carry this place around with you 'cause you're naming for yourself the place your car normally drives itself to when you're jonesin' for something to eat from south of the border. Me? I may have just found a place that's been around forever, but that I'd never been to before, and that may become my new answer to that eternal question. La Cocinita's a very Sloan's Lake kinda neighborhood spot. Not fancy by any definition of the term. But with incredibly low prices, this place has been around since the dawn of time on 29th, just before it hits Sheridan. Set back aways from the street, its large parking lot makes it more convenient than most area restaurants, and its large deck space doesn't hurt, either. Once inside you'll find a large brightly lit seat-yourself room with tables squished together. It makes for a very friendly and usually crowded setting where many of the locals seem to know each other. We shared a table for 6 with another couple who couldn't have been more friendly or talkative and who were the subject of many other customers' visits. We found it charming in a down-home, unpretentious kinda way. They had the standard Tex-Mex selections, but I thought the tastes were above average on almost everything we had. The beer (Negra Modelo) was a little colder, so better tasting than normally served. The frijoles (my honey's test dish in every Mexican restaurant) were absolutely prepped with lard--a requirement to get into the higher echelons of Mexican dining. The salsa was way better than average. And the carne adovada and asada were both 4 star dishes. All-in-all, one of my new possible favorites. I foresee the need to check them out a few times more before coming down definitively on whether it's my new go-to spot for Mexican dining. But if you've never been there and you want to be (or pretend to be:) an expert on Denver Mexican restaurants, you really should check out La Cocinita.

Anyone who thinks this is good food has never been to a halfway decent restaurant. I ordered the #9 combo to try many items, and two words describe everything on the plate: bland and overcooked. And the service is horrible too. When I got here 3 employees walked past me without any contact, and even though there is more staff than employees during the lunch hour (never a good sign) the wait to get a glass of water of almost 5 minutes. While the food came out quickly, obviously no care or attention was put into it by the staff. No one asked me how my meal was - I presume they know it sucked without question. With so many excellent choices, I won't be back. If you read he reviews carefully, seems like many were posted by the same people (staff most likely)

I'm from Texas and this place is legit! My bf and I stumbled upon this restaurant after finding out Hogshead Brewery didn't have any food. It's blocks away and I was THRILLED to see the patio and authentic menu. I almost always order Carne Asada so I was disappointed that it wasn't on the menu BUT the Steak Ranchero more than made up for it. We live in Five Points so this is quite a bike ride but well worth it. I LOVE this place! For a transplant Texan who eats mexican every day, this is a treasure.

It's always a bummer to see such high reviews, and then get the 2-star experience. -- Upon walking up, I got excited. It seemed fun and had a great patio... and then I walked inside. After standing for a moment and having 2 guys stare at me while they kept working, I asked if I should seat myself, and was told to sit anywhere (as if it was already known). The white floor tiles echo sound against the sparsely decorated walls, The exposed wires & vents clash against the randomly placed/randomly chosen artwork. The lack of any mood music allows me to hear EVERY cackle from the table of 60-somethings that have clearly already had a few margaritas. To be honest, it feels like I walked into someone's kitchen, that happens to have numerous tables for eating... So to the food... I ordered the enchilada plate with the red chili sauce on the side (because EVERYTHING in Denver comes "smothered" in an unknown level of spicy wetness). I'm glad I did. It was pretty liquidy & greasy, and disappointingly, horribly flavorless. I'm super sensitive to spicy things, and found it not really spicy at all (I've had red & green chiles that were, so I didn't know what to expect)... Otherwise, the beef enchilada meat was kind of mushy (like the texture of refried beans, but still ground beef). The chicken option was surprisingly, quite tasty. It is a redeeming option... So my waiter puts the food down (as you do), and never returns. I've sat for 30-40min and not even a "how's your food" or "can I get you more water." I had to flag down someone to get me water and my waiter, so I could get my check. -- In short, the food is fine but nothing special, the environment leaves a lot to be desired, and the staff is whatever they want to be that day. I won't likely return, as there are SO MANY other great Mexican food options in Denver. GENDER-FRIENDLY: it's mostly families, older couples, friends out for dinner... I don't think you'd get harassed, maybe some stares. The staff was quiet, so they'd probably just stare for a minute and get confused when you correct them after they've misgendered you. Bathrooms are gender-marked, but single-occupancy. DISABILITY-FRIENDLINESS: They have parking, but it was busy so I had to grab street parking (there's a disability spot across the street). Their own disability spot is right in front of the door, but is blocked by a single, renegade parking spot. This of course had been parked in poorly, so the empty disability spot was useless/unusable. The entrance sidewalk has an awkward sideways slant (not a ramp) so the right side of the doorway has a 1" lip, and the left side is 3"....so I thought to myself "enter through the patio?" Nope. -- Inside, tables scattered cleanly, but close together, as well as booths. When all the seats are full, it's a hard to get through (I was using a cane & had to twist around a guy's chair). Entrance to patio is flat other than a 1/4" little lip (probably to seal it when the door is closed). Patio is flat concrete. Bathrooms are through a door, down a tiled hallway that apparently leads to the kitchen (I almost ran into a guy bussing a table). They are single-occupancy and wheelchair accessible, although in hindsight it occurs to me that the men's room might not be at all because the door opens to the left and you wouldn't be able to get around it to close it. The door lock is the round knob kind. The door is heavy/weighted so it closes automatically. Have fun with that.

After searching high and low for good chips and salsa in Denver, I may have finally find a winner here. This Texas transplant has high expectations when it comes to salsa, and so far I had been pretty disappointed. Huge thumbs up for the salsa! I'm also pretty picky when it comes to the entree, I had the combination #6 with an enchilada, taco, chile relleno, and guacamole tostada. Pretty much the perfect combination for me! There was plenty of guac on the tostada, and green chile smothering the relleno. Delicious. I also really loved the seasoning of the beef on the taco, very flavorful and not run of the mill bland. The husband had the burrito supreme, let me tell you, you better be hungry! It was smothered in chile and bigger than his face! Both of these and a sprite were a grand total of 17.20. Very, very impressed with this place! Hole in the wall, but very clean, friendly, and DELICIOUS!

Excellent food and excellent, friendly, fast service! I particularly loved the crispy chili rellenos and the carnitas. Also, their fresh (complementary) chips and homemade salsa was SO good!! This is going to be our new go-to spot!

Great little spot right by my house. I only try to go in the summer so I can sit on the patio and share a pitcher of margaritas with my husband. If I sit inside, it's a little too cramped and depressing. However, the food is spot on and the prices are always great. Carnitas are a particular favorite. Happy to have this spot in the 'hood for a quick bite!

The food was fantastic. It's the best Mexican food I've had in Colorado so far. I got a number 10 combo thing that came with a taquito, chile relleno, cheese enchilada, tamale AND rice and beans. All that for 8 dollars is seriously pretty good. And it was super tasty. I think my favorite was the chile relleno though. Just fantastic. I would have given them 5 stars, but the service was laughably awful. The waitress never actually greeted us or anything, just sort of threw our menus on the table and skipped away. I don't know, she seemed like she didn't give two shits. The best part was when she asked us how everything was, but walked away and said thank you before we answered. I LOLed. I would definitely go back. The food was too good and cheap not to.

I have a co-worker who lives in this area, and he cannot stop talking about how great this place is. And with good reason. The prices are absurdly low for the quality product they are turning out. The menu is large but don't let that fool you. The décor is almost an afterthought and the service can be slow, but it has always been pleasant. The food is the real star of the show here. Consistent, well balanced and made with care. I like their green and I like their standard table salsa. The usual combinations can be made or you can choose a house specialty. Get here early or you will have to wait for a table at lunch time. I think this place is starting to catch on.

I know 5 stars for a dive may seem a bit over the top, but La Cocinita deserves every one of them as it epitomizes the hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. Being born and raised in Colorado, I have eaten a lot of Mexican food in my life and La Cocinita is one of my favorites. From the vinyl booths and Formica tabletops, to the Corona banners proudly hung across the restaurant, this place exudes eau de dive, and it's perfect. I would go with any of the combination plates, but I especially like their super crispy chili rellenos. Of course, you need to wash everything down with a pitcher (or two) of their margaritas, which are served in the finest cactus stemmed glasses. The service is always good here and very efficient. Nothing fancy at all, but I know where to go to get my Mexican food fix on.

Things I learned upon visiting La Cocinita: 1. Chimichangas for breakfast are a fantastic idea. 2. The hidden places are sometimes the best. 3. Their booths aren't bolted to the floor (people kept scooting them in and out) I've been staying in Sloan's Lake for the last few days, which means more Mexican food than you can shake a maraca at, which makes me very, very happy. This place is the top of the top of places I ate over the week and I will be frequenting this place from here on out. Just off Sheridan and 29th, if you're not looking for it, this place would be easy to miss. And if you miss it, that's most certainly your loss. The service was fast and friendly and, while the decor is certainly sparse, all that melts away when you take your first bite of whatever combination of meat, cheese, beans and tortilla you choose. This was the best shredded beef that I have ever had at a Mexican establishment and my friend told me yesterday that their chicken is just as good. I can't WAIT to eat here again.

If you live in the neighborhood, add this place to your rotation. You wont find better Mexican food for the price. All the servers are very friendly and welcoming. They have a great patio for the warmer months. Margarita pitchers are super cheap. They have a large menu that is not intimidating. Take it from me, I've been here 25-30 times since I moving down the street, and I've never had a poor experience. And I'll be the first one to tell you when I have bad Mexican. Take out is also pretty quick if you want an easy dinner.

Good, CHEAP, Mexican food. Server was super nice but a little slow and that's why I gave 4 stars. Large selection of yummy food. Stop in if you're hungry in the area. Bill for a family of four with dessert and margs was $26 before tax.

This is one of the few restaurants that my entire family can all agree on. Service is great (only time it is a little off is when it's busy) Best Margarita in Denver.

    (5)
  • Chris L.

Average mexican food. Bland and the service couldn't of cared less. It would be nice to see a mexican joint at least make refried beans from scratch....that's so easy and just lazy for them to use canned product. Probably will only come back when I've had a few beers from Hogshead.

    (3)
  • Ellen H.

Fantastic food at such a good price! I ate there yesterday and am already craving more :) The only reason they got a 4 instead of a 5 was because of the slower service. But I will gladly wait to eat such delicious food. I ordered a combo plate and I would highly recommend the crispy relleno...with extra rice...yum!

  • Jeff S.

I had this place bookmarked for some time, finally made it in for dinner. It's small, brightly lit, and not meant for anything more than a quick bite. Many people came and went while we were here, it's obviously quite the neighborhood spot. Naturally, my first taste was of the salsa, and it was pretty boring. No heat and lacking in flavor. For dinner I had a chili relleno and a smothered shredded beef burrito. The former was not very good at all, again, boring and flavorless. The green chili was nothing special. I will say that the shredded beef was extremely good, I was very happy with that, but it unfortunately didn't outshine the whole overall meal. I saw some reviews that critiqued the service, we didn't have any problem with that aspect. I do agree with other Yelpers that the cost is very reasonable, but I suppose you get what you pay for. I was pretty disappointed in the meal, but if you go I recommend the shredded beef..

My wife brought me to La Cocinita for the first time years ago and I have grown to love it. Cheap, fast, decent americanized mexican food. The kind with tons of cheese and green chilli. Service is sometimes sketchy when busy but they always get the job done.

Margaritas were reallllllly "mix-y" and I thought the food was pretty blah. Only bright spot was the whole grilled jalapenos.

So my mom tells me way back in the day, when she was young this place was a dairy. I'm glad the dairy closed and La Cocinita is there instead! I love this place. For one, I love how cheap it is!! No joke two people can eat here for under $20 if you aren't drinking booze. But if you are drinking booze, the margs are cheap and tasty. The chips are usually fresh, like just out of the fryer and the salsa is homemade and spicy. My favorite is the tamale plate for $5 and that is two tamales w rice and beans. I think my mouth is starting to water... CON: The service is bad. And its seat your self, so there could likely be someone who comes in after you've been sitting and waiting to be served and they get service before you.

We are regulars here and love this place, family friendly, quick and dependable. This spot has my ultimate comfort food guacamole and chicken tostadas with a bowl of green chili! Great salsa! When I am feeling down I go here, when I am feeling a cold come on or sick I go here for comfort food. Low key, super casual and friendly. Lunch is usually packed and service can be slow when busy but worth the wait.

I don't know where to begin except to say that the chips came to our table WARM--actually hot but not dripping or permeated with grease. Light and crisp and strong enough to carry a load of flavorful crunchy salsa. Most of those at the table where we sat ordered burritos "smothered" with beans and rice. They were delighted--and didn't stop eating to talk until I insisted that they taste the corn tortillas that I ordered with my Caldo de Cameron. They couldn't believe what a taste sensation the tortillas were. As my sister said, "You can actually taste the corn--like it's on the cob." The shrimp? Tender, plump, and tasty. The vegetables that enhanced the flavor? Not overcooked, but easy to eat. The whole meal was easy to eat. Here's a restaurant where you can hear the conversation at the table because everyone in the place is so busy enjoying the food! Here's a place where children are welcome and they're busy munching too. Here's a place where a couple stops in after church on Sunday and soaks up the camaraderie of people enjoying their favorite Mexican entrees.

Anytime I go to Mexican restaurant that's not La Cosinita..... I say I should have gone to La Cosinita. I have been going there for years everytime I turn a friend on to them.....it becomes their favorite restaurant. You can't beat the prices or the hot chips and yummy salsa. sometimes we go there 3 times a week its the best!!!!

Went here tonight with the family. Usually this is my 2nd fave to Guadalajara on 72nd and Federal but now this place has dropped off my lists of go to's for Mexican food. Should have known it wasn't going to go well when it took 10 minutes to get a menu and drink order in. Then another 10 min to have 3 out of 7 drinks missing. Then another 10 min to order our food. It didn't take long for our food to come out but one plate was missing and by the time it came out half of the people in our party were nearly done with their meals. Also several of us ordered tacos and the shells were so soggy that all of the meat fell out of the bottom. Nothing worse than getting a non crunchy shell if you didn't order a SOFT taco! The Steak Burrito was skimpy for the $9 they upped their price to, and no refills were offered, sopapillas hard as a rock (and had to ask twice for honey). I find it even more disappointing when you have to ask for silverware....for the entire table. In my opinion you should never have to ask for anything but your meal and drink. We got the bill and went to pay and I politely let the young lady know that the service and food were pretty not as good as usual and I've been a regular customer for years, to which she replied, "well please don't come here again!" Fine, you don't have to ask me twice to spend my money in an establishment that won't correct their mistakes or at least make up an excuse and apologize like they were too busy or something. Glad I experienced this place before their prices went up and their food quality and customer service went south.

I had my doubts about this place. Well, I was excited about it...and then we walked into a restaurant full of old white people and I began having my doubts. Here's the thing though...old white people know where the cheap food is. We had the tamale plate (good, but nothing amazing) and the chicken flautas (big serving but it didn't come with rice and beans) and the bill came to $11. So if you're looking for decent cheap Mexican food this is a solid option. You can definitely find better Mexican on the west side but being that this place is less than a mile from my house and will serve up dinner for around $5 it'll probably make my regular take out rotation.

I was real happy with the food, the Chips and Salsa were tasty and fresh, the Guac was good too. The Steak Ranchero was awesome, great blend of flavors and spice. My girlfriend really enjoyed her combo plate, she loved the Relleno, Enchelada and Crispy Taco. I will go back here in the future, the atmosphere is family style, well lit, and the place tends to be full. We lucked out and walked right in and got a table , when we left there was a line of about 12 people waiting to eat. That says lots about their food. Check them out, good food, good prices and no hype .

23AUG2015 Sat on the patio this afternoon for the USA Pro Challenge. Three years of visits and I am still happy. Our group had a great time. Of course, alcohol was involved. 14APR2013 Could be 5 stars. Just a few steps away. + The patio. Awesome. The pine trees provide the perfect amount of shade. And it is far enough from the street so you get a lot less noise. It needs some sprucing up, but I am overlooking that because this patio is great. + Food. "This is not real mexican food." was in another review. Well, duh. You want real Mexican, you fly to México. This is Tex-Mex with the Colorado influence. It is quite good. I had the special nachos (nachos are one of my "test foods" when checking out a new place) and they were very good to excellent. The "first order free" chips and salsa were tasty. + Service. "GRINGOS NOT WANTED!!!" wrote another reviewer. We did not sense that at all. We were served with friendly smiles by multiple people. And, when one item was delivered incorrectly, they fixed it quickly and with an apology. I give an A for service. + Alcohol. Fair prices. Very good value. And, the patio makes a perfect environment in which to consume margaritas. + Not crowded. We got there at 1200 on a Saturday and there were lots of open tables. Of course, about 45 minutes later those tables were occupied. I can see why and how this restaurant can get crowded. So, go when it is not. + Location. Only 10 downhill blocks from my house. Now, if I could only figure out how to make the return trip downhill also. + Parking. Plenty of it in their lot. Not that I will ever drive here. + Fried jalapeños. - No Wi-Fi. - No website - Barely effective paper napkins. Cloth would be so much nicer. - Low-end flatware. I am getting tired of all these places who buy the second cheapest flatware they can find. - No music on the patio. - Service can be erratic. Sometimes it is attentive and at others, not at all.

Use to love the food and travel from I-25 & 104th. I don't know if they got new owners or changed cooks, but the last few times the food was not the same and come to the table cool. Will not be returning anytime soon.

This place is probably the best value in Denver. Cheap good Mexican food. (no need for 867 word description). Probably best Mexican food value in Denver. Hit it!

Dinner for two with two margaritas, chips and salsa = $20. For reals, is it the 90s? No, it's Denver's best Mexican dive, La Cocinita. From the City of Chicago wall clock above the bar to the beer refrigerator in the middle of the dining room, its not much for ambiance, but this place is about FOOD and QUICK SERVICE and nothing else. I plan on being the Duke of this place soon ... If you like your food swimming in green chili and cheese, I highly recommend combo #8. The parking lot gets full quick and the dining room is even smaller. Great shady patio in the summer for a bucket of beer or a margarita!

Great quality and quantity for the price. This is one of my go-to places because it's close to work and you can get a great lunch pretty cheap. They have a nice outdoor patio. I'd recommend the tacos adovada.

In my never-ending quest to find the perfect pork (carnitas) burrito, La Cocinita deserves high praise. Who knew this Tex-Mex gem was so close by? If you drive by you will likely only notice the take-out sign as the restaurant itself is set back from the street, behind large trees and what turned out to be a delightful patio. On a near seventy degree day, we were lucky to get a table on the patio. The inside of this place isn't as inviting so we'll probably be putting this on our Spring-Summer Al Fresco dining list. But, back to the pig... I ordered the pork and bean burrito smothered with lettuce and cheese - a great deal at $3.95! The add-on guacamole for $2 is a bit of a rip-off - but whatever. My hubby ordered the Nachos Supreme which were, in my view, perfect as each homemade chip contained the right amount of refritos, cheese, pepper etc. None of this "pile-o-chips" with a bunch of stuff on top. The nachos were delicious and definitely large enough to share if you want a lighter meal. Oh, but the pig...again I digress. I received my burrito but discovered that I'd actually received the chicharron version (fried port skin/meat) instead of just roasted pork. Don't get me wrong, the chicharron was delicious but not what I wanted. I asked the server to verify what I'd received and he agreed. He returned within a few minutes with another plate containing my order. It was delicious - just what I was looking for. Tender, slow-cooked pork (and lots of it) with beans smothered in mild, flavorful green chili (it could have used a bit more kick). I'd skip the guac next time even though it was good. Just not enough to justify the $2. So here is what makes this experience four stars. Instead of just bringing my meal, as ordered, they apologized then brought my plate and offered to comp my part of the meal. "No", I said, "I'm happy to pay - and I will also pay for the chicharron burrito to take home (can you say breakfast!)."- It was that good! When they brought us the check, they had still comped the burrito. That's great service! So, in summary: Great Tex-Mex - check Great patio - check Great service - check Within walking distance - CHECK Free Wi-Fi - nope (no one's perfect :-) Love this place!

Cheap, standard Texican food pretty much sums this place up. The chips are good and fresh, but the salsa is a bit too runny and falls off the chips... several times into my lap. The margaritas are premixed. The chicken enchiladas were just okay... kinda bland actually. They have great prices and service was super. Nice to have a place like this in the hood, but there is nothing new here. Oh and I agree with another reviewer... they should have some music on the patio.

  • Andrea B.

If you're in the mood for inexpensive good Mexican, this is your place. We love to sit on the patio and have tacos or one of the combination platters... Oh, and $14 for a giant pitcher of margaritas! We love this place!

  • Bosco Z.

Don't listen to these Gabocho's.. this is not tex-mex this is good old fashioned north side mexican food , excellent menudo , best I've had in a restaurant. The pork /bean smothered burrito (extra hot ) is also excellent.

I've been going to this restaurant since it opened. I have never, I repeat, never had a bad meal here. The salsa is to die for and today I branched out and had the Carne Adovada. This dish tasted as good if not better than the ones I have had in Mexico. Look, if you scan the dining room and see nothing but Mexican folks eating, you're in the right restaurant for authenticity. The service is very good and the prices? Where can you get a perfect meal with all the fixings and with tip it's $30.00? You can't! I do hope you'll try it and love it as much as we do.

So I had to stop by for lunch today. Everytime I drive by it is so busy. It is no ATL Mexican with a speedy gonzalas on the menu but it was good, cheap and quick. The one thing that I didn't like was the fact you only got 1 free refill! REALLY!! It is soda and soda is cheap! I used to run a restaurant! Chips and Salsa were good and the fajitas were full of chicken. And I enjoyed the fact that I had an option of flour tortillas or corn! Overall good decision and I'll probably go back. Wanna come with?

    (4)
  • Doug Y.

I think the extreme popularity of this place is mainly due to the price performance. I've eaten here a half dozen times and there's never been a "wow" moment. It's just good, solid, and very reasonably priced 'combination" style food. I dropped it a star due to the rather lackluster service. Some dishes weren't ordered, others were wrong, water glasses were never refilled, cerveza order wrong, and the server was serving a little too much attitude besides. A smiling or pleasant server can make the difference between a decent meal and a good or great one! Skip the Adobada here and stay with the carnitas or menudo if you're so inclined. veinte'

This is one of those really typical Denver Mexican restaurants that is just consistently good, cheap and wonderful. What makes it exceptional is that pretty much every menu item is done great where at many restaurants only part of the menu is good: The chips are freshly fried, the salsa spicy and flavorful, the beans creamy and the green chili the perfect Denver-style you come to expect from this city. My favorite is the chicharone burrito because they consistently get the meat perfectly crisp, salty and delicious without it being too hard, burnt or rubbery like I see at many many other restaurants. I think the service is good, but I can see how others may not. My family has been coming here so long that pretty much everyone recognizes us and we get great service. But I can see that it's not always the case for everyone. Just recognize that this is a family restaurant and sometimes the servers actually have to go take care of their kids for a minute. La Cocinita is exactly what I think about when I think about Denver-style Mexican food, because truly this place does it the best.

A friend told us about this small but cheap place to eat mexican food. So tonite we thought we'd give it a shot and we all loved it. Our friend was right it's small and delicous, nice hidden gem. It's patio makes for a nice meal outside and inside booths and tables of all sizes. Very happy my wife talked me into going, i can be kinda stubburn. We'll be back again you can take that to the bank.

La Cocinita is a good place for a cheap, fast meal. We've always gone there during work, so no margs for us (sadly), but we've always liked what we've ordered. Warm chips make me happy. I end up overeating when we go here, but what else is new? Their prices are really really good for a full-service restaurant!

    (4)
  • Nia S.

The best thing about the place is the price. They are very reasonable. The thing that makes some people hesitate to go back is the service. It's slow, and they don't really seem to care about making any type of an impression, good or bad. They mostly don't seem to care....period. The food is okay. I haven't had bad food here but some of my friends have (including a bug in lunch one day when we ordered takeout). They don't always hear/write down the order correctly either. I have ordered both in and for takeout a couple of times where I didn't get what I ordered. When I complained about it once, I was told that I would eat it anyway, everyone loves green chili right? WTF!!!!!! Anyhow, if you want mostly okay cheap food, this is the place for you. If you care about service, don't bother!

  • Vanya L.

This place is close to my house, so of course I checked it out. It has great prices, pretty good food, fast and friendly service, and they are very baby friendly. The guacamole is great and comes with a large quantity of hot chips. Their chips really are stellar, too. I like the rellenos (the relleno plate with 2 rellenos, rice, beans, and two tortillas is a steal at $6.00). The salsa is good. I've had the carnitas and for the price they are very decent. This is a great little neighborhood place, always busy.

    (4)
  • Amy A.

Decent, cheap Mexican food. You can totally order two meals, two beers, and leave for under $20. Amazing. Service isn't usually very good, but since it is so cheap, it's tolerable. And always really busy! I am very happy to have this place in the hood.

    (4)
  • Gene G.

This is not real mexican food. Do yourself a favor and find another place to eat.

    (1)
  • Art M.

I have been here several times now. Each time the food has been fairly consistent. It's your average Mexican food flare. The food is a bit smaller in portion than other places. The food is average, and will satisfy your craving for burritos , rellenos, and enchiladas n more. The service is somewhat slow, it seems that there are only 2 waitstaff here every time I have gone. So my take on this place is 3 stars..it's good but not great..

    (3)
  • Rich R.

Great food, great Margarita's, great staff. Haven't had anything but the Taco's Adobada or the Burrito Supreme in 3 years. If you like something Fried, check out the Chile Rellenos. 2 entrees and a pitcher of margarita's for just about $25 (tip included).

  • Alysse C.

I frequent La Cocinita a lot due to the delicious food and the even better, rock bottom prices. Get there early, because there could be a long wait to get a booth or table during dinner time. During the summer, the patio is open so that takes off some of the load in the main dining area. As stated before, this is one of the only places I have been to where the prices were reasonable and for that reason I will keep coming back. The booths are mismatched and a little ghetto looking, but just look the other way and dig yourself in the bowl of chips and salsa! The service: Well....not the best. If you're in a rush, do not go here. The majority of the time spent is waiting for drinks and salsa, once you have ordered, the food comes quite quickly. They do need to hire more staff in order to be more attentive to customers!

    (4)
  • Ken K.

I'd been to La Cocinita several times when I lived nearby, mostly on the huge patio sipping beer. Recently I enjoyed the tacos al carbon, which is slightly greasy but delicious and loaded with grilled onions, peppers, and flavor. The chips and salsa are some of the best in Denver. You don't go to La Cocinita expecting culinary miracles. The food here is good, but basic, and it isn't the kind of place to make an evening of. But on a Sunday afternoon, take R&R and sit on the patio with a beer while you enjoy some good, simple pleasures. Nothing's better than that.

I feel a little conflicted about only giving this place a three since I know I will be back on a regular basis, but that's only because it's walking distance to my home. If it involved driving, I would never return. Pros: Close to where I live! (A pro only if you are me. Or if you live with me. or in the 'hood) Lots of parking for those who do not live with me Big, glorious patio. (I give extra points to any place with a patio, especially if my dog is welcome on it) Very cheap, I think the Nachos I ordered last time I was there were $3 Quick! It couldn't have been more than 5 minutes from when I ordered to when I was presented with Nachos Friendly service. Prompt, polite, efficient Warm chips and good salsa Cons: Bad Margaritas. Too sweet, not enough alcohol. Twice I have split a pitcher with someone there and I left not even buzzed. Food could be better. It wasn't terrible, but it's more what you'd expect from a taco stand, not a sit-down place. Menu is very basic. All the staples (tamales, burritos, etc.) but nothing special Decor and ambience are lacking. Lights are flourescent, patio chairs are the cheap white plastic. I know it's cheap and divey, but cheap and divey can have atmosphere, too. This place with good margaritas would be four stars.

  • Peter T.

Above average Mexican food in a really casual, family friendly setting. My 11 year old daughter loves this place because the green chili is mild enough for her tame pallet, the bean burrito is the size of her head and there are usually great sopapillas to be had at the conclusion. Dad likes it because her smothered bean burrito is under $4 and his #6 combo with 4 items is only $7. The food is consistently good, be sure to have a Tamale. The patio is a great spot to sip a margarita on a lazy afternoon and the staff is attentive and friendly. Good food, Great Value

Love this little place. We live about a half a block away so we've been up here a ton. No place else exists at this price and the food is beyond decent. In this hood, I'd say only Hilario's on 38th has a better meal. You can't go wrong with any shredded beef dish, and although not on the menu, the shrimp tacos are nuts, usually they'll make them if you ask...usually... ....on that note, service is what kills these guys in reviews. I'm not sure what the dynamic here is, but it seems like its a dad, mom and daughter running the whole place, and the whole place is almost always packed. The older waitress is actually super nice, but her ingles is more menos than mas, which is why I feel a lot of people are put off by her. So yes, the service is slow. Grab another cheap Dos XX...

    (4)
  • D R.

Well, it has been another ~5 months since last review, we've probably eaten La Cocinita another 10 times since that time ... the people there are nice, the food is good, and it is very reasonably priced. I've been getting the 2 taco plate, my wife gets the #3 combo. Last time, we ordered a side of pico and a side of guac. Both have a nice zing to 'em, not too hot, just right. The serve breakfast burriotos, I always leave for work pre-butt crack before they open, so I don't know what these are like yet ... but I'm guessing they are good. The parking lot is always full ... the word is out, and the word is good. I'm glad this place exists in my neigborhood.

Great price for great food! The waitstaff is exceptional (Erika is my favorite!!)! I have been going to this place for years and would recommend it to anyone. I have no issues with this place and they will have my patronage for years to come. Thanks for the great service you give to the North Side aka the Highlands! You are a true gem in the rough.

I have read from another post that you don't want to see the kitchen!!!!!! Unfortunately I read that review after I had been there and found a HAIR in my chile relleno. The manager was like, oh well, wasn't concerned in the least.....guess it must he is use to this type of complaint. Requested he remove it from my bill, he did. Not very clean, and the waitress wasn't friendly. When we left the manager did not say thank you......NOT my fault that there was a hair in my food!!!!! Bad experience all around. My friends who told me about it have not been back there since I told them about the nasty black hair in my food.

CLEAN restaurant, AWESOME patio, and most importantly, CHEAP and DELICIOUS food. What else can you ask for from a Mexican restaurant? In addition, the service is friendly despite it being swamped with business the majority of times I eat there. That seems to be a common thread of delicious affordable dining. The service always suffers due to pure volume of customers. But I can live with slow service as long as the food remains good and the servers are nice. Which they are and very accommodating. Love the steak burritos, smothered with green chili. Add in the complimentary chips and mildly spicy salsa, and an ice cold Corona, you can get stuffed for less than $10.

  • Holly G.

It's been months since I have eaten dinner here, so one evening the fiance and I decided to stop in. I was pretty unimpressed with my last visit. The food didn't seem as tasty as it once did. I'm not sure if I have found favorite dishes at other restaurants that I like more and my tastes have changed? Or if it is because La Cocinita has changed its recipes? Not sure...

  • Kelsey R.

Delicious, cheap mexican food. Service is never very good, but the amazing portions are worth it! I got the #1 combination, which had an enchilada, burrito, chile relleno and taco- all for like six bucks!! My friend got the breakfast burrito ($3) and a chicken quesadilla to split between the two of us (also $3). Definitely go here! You can expect inexpensive, delicious food with huge portions. Also, the chips are freshly made- awesome.

  • Ramon G.

It's hard to get your money's worth these days so it's refreshing to see a place like La Cocinita dishing out solid mexican food for such a cheap price. Nothing fancy going on here. Eat here and you'll get good sized portions of authentic mexican dishes. Did I mention how how cheap you can eat here? Definitely try and get a seat outside on their patio. What is it about eating chips and salsa and sipping a beer out in the open air that makes it better?

    (3)
  • Wanda T.

I love this place. Delicious, inexpensive, and did I mention delicious? Their chips and salsa are the best I've had in Denver. We mostly get takeout because the restaurant itself doesn't have the best atmosphere (it's fine, just not great). Highly recommended for a hangover cure.

  • Douglas R.

What a great restaurant. Yeah, not much inside but you can't beat the food and the service was attentive. They are always busy which must mean something. Love going to this place and sitting on the patio. If you want REAL Mexican food, try here.

Went back for dinner one evening this past week and I really had to change my initial review. The waitress with the slow response and bad attitude seems to have gotten worse. She got my order wrong. Didn't offer a refill for my wife's soda and brought the food out several minutes before she brought utensil settings to the table. The food was kind of flavorless, the beans needed salt and the chili was bland. The family that owns the place is wonderful, I think they've lost some of the personal touch. Their kids were always on their "A" game when they worked the restaurant. Now they've grown up and the family involvement is dwindling. Its a shame really.

Excellent chips and salsa--check. Crispy chiles rellenos with hearty green chile--check. Wonderful patio seating--check. Cheap eats--check. Totally crowded at random times like 2pm on a Sunday--check. Will I come back again and again? Heck yes. P.S. When I told my Mexican friend what the place was called he said, "why would you go to a restaurant called 'the little pig?'" Apparently my Spanish sucks as I pronounced the restaurant, La Co-chin-ita instead of La Co-sin-ita." Fun with other languages!

I live out of state and when I come to Denver for a visit I ALWAYS eat here at least a couple of times. My favorite is their Chile Rellenos...fried not soft. They are the BEST! It's cheap, atmosphere is decent, chips and salsa are great and the service is good. It's a favorite hometown visit for me and I'll be there this summer...can't wait.

At one time, this was my go-to neighborhood joint. I was here at least once a week for lunch, maybe twice for dinner. But then I realized that in the past few months, when I get something that involves their chili (anything smothered), I was running to the bathroom, if you know what I mean, within the hour. However, I still like their supernachos with shredded beef and guac on the side (no chili involved). The prices still can't be beat.

Solid food (I always get their carne asada and it is great), great patio and very reasonable prices. My friends live around the corner and introduced me to this place and I get take away from there every time I am at my friends house. The service can be a little slow but when you are sitting on the patio during a nice summer day sipping a beer, who gives a damn? My friends like the chile rellenos, enchiladas and quesadillas. Very veggie friendly as well. Overall a great place for soldi Mexican food.

  • Kyle M.

I found myself here again a few nights ago, and I'll admit that I was terrified that the service was going to be just as terrible as it usually is. However, I was surprised because our server was fairly attentive and she brought us our drinks and such fairly quickly. We still had to ask for about half of the stuff we needed (refills, etc.), but overall it was an improvement over previous experiences. I hate to say it, but it seems like the male servers are the ones who don't give a flying cupcake about providing, well, any real service.

  • Yvonne C.

Cheap, cheap, cheap. Since boy and I were craving Mexican food today, we thought we'd give a new restaurant a try. Jared had seen this place and noticed that it was always busy so to the Highlands we went. Although the everything is cheap, the food wasn't any spectacular.

  • William L.

I came here last Friday night with a couple that lives a block away. They dine at least twice a week; it seems they're not the only ones because the place was packed. I ordered tacos de adobada (marinated pork). I got three huge, tasty tacos for a respectable $6.50. My companions had chicken tacos and a steak dinner plate. After we cleared our plates we all were smiling. Our smiles got bigger after a dessert of pupusas. The owner, Rodolfo, and his staff are warm to every patron, whether it's a neighborhood regular or a first-time out-of-towner.

  • Corey S.

Not fancy, but great value, friendly staff, and simple mexican food that's always tasty. Of the many cheap Mexican restaurants in our neighborhood, this is the on we frequent most often. Entrees are $5 to $7 a piece, the green chile is good, the seasoned chicken flavorful, and the combos offer a great sampling of their food. This place is tough to beat for consistently satisfying, affordable Mexican fare.

    (4)
  • Lauren D.

This place has painfully Americanized Mexican food. But it is also fantastically cheap! $8.00 for fajitas?! $3.00 quesadillas? Those are some recession-busting prices. The service was quick and the portions were fair. Salsa was tasty. I just think that I could probably make something more authentic at home if I tried, but for probably more money. So it's a toss up, if you are feeling uber-cheap, go eat like a king here.

  • Jorge O.

Great place to eat! Great food, good prices, tasty authentic food not really amercanized at all. Friendly staff. A little small though and always packed but i think thats a good thing becase their making good food, hopefully they expand soon. would highly recommend over any other mexican restuarant especially the growing chain of three margaritas, I don't know why people like that place.

    (5)
  • Tina C.

Great food and I love the outdoor patio. My friend Jill and I split an order of chicken fajitas. I asked for jalapenos on the side. They brought them for me - roasted and fresh off the grill. Fantastic! Service was a little slow but they only had one waiter working. He was really busy but was very friendly about having to literally run around to serve everyone. Bien!

This is, hands-down, the best family-style Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is always good, cheap, and fast. I eat there fairly frequently, and love their pattio in the summer. The down-side? I don't think they acutally put tequila in their margs. Sometimes they get too busy and service isn't great. Some of the staff can be rude (they assume I dont' speak Spanish and talk about us behind our backs right in front of us...what's that about?!?)

    (3)
  • Andrea W.

Please folks, stop discovering my favorite neighborhood Mexican joint so I don't have to wait when I wander over for those horrible margaritas (best ever), bland food (entirely yummy enchiladas, fajitas, etc and best-in-town chips and salsa) and high prices (incredibly cheap). Thanks.

    (4)
  • Casey C.

This place offers basic, no frills, traditional Mexican food. Don't go expecting dazzling service or beautiful decore, but do expect to leave with a very full tummy and a smile on your face. The chile rellenos are the best in Denver, seriously. Crispy, golden, bubbling-- ok, if I sometimes just randomly look off into space with a dazed expression it's probably because I am daydreaming about the rellenos at La Cocinita. Sad but true you guys. Anyway, stop by for a Modelo and some cheap and delicious food anytime you are starving and not feeling motivated enough to cook or to go somewhere fancy.

    (5)
  • Kara A.

This place reminds me of being in Mexico for 2 reasons: the rustic ambiance and the low prices. The chiles rellenos are the best I've had in Denver. Servings are huge and delicious. Service is good. Make sure to sit on the patio.

We love this place. Pretty typical Mexican food, but you can't beat the service or the price. Family dinner for less than $15? Get outa here....
