If I were to open a restaurant--a childhood dream of mine--I'd want to open up a place like Kokoro! It started as a mom-and-pop restaurant in 1986, and has grown to be such a staple in the community: family-friendly, inviting and unpretentious! Kokoro supports so many organizations and events in the community. I see their delicious sushi catering trays all the time because they are donating to local, philanthropic events! They also have a great Bowl Club Card for loyal customers and awesome happy hour specials (every day)! Just makes you feel good eating with them! But above all, the food itself is delicious! Kokoro uses RED BIRD FARMS, chicken that is never frozen chicken and U.S. Choice Beef. You can taste the difference! I am a huge fan of the spicy chicken splash at Kokoro! It normally comes with udon noodles but you can ask for it with ramen. It's great, my 'go-to' dish here! It can also be a 'to-go' dish (you see what I did there?), you can order at Kokoro's drive-thru window. They will separate the soup from the noodles and tastes just as good at home! I like to stop by after work and pick up dinner at Kokoro.

I stopped in for lunch and had the Shrimp Tempura Splash and a Spider Roll. Service was mediocre. They asked if I wanted a menu when I sat down. Shouldn't that be implied? The reason I gave them 2 stars is primarily for the spider roll. If you can't do sushi well, you shouldn't do it. Something inside the roll was quite grainy (and not the rice), and left an unsatisfied feeling. The splash bowl was pretty bland, but the tempura bundles were probably the highlight of the dish.

Sign up for the bowl club! Great coupons come in the mail and after every 5000 points you earn a free bowl. I used to strictly just get the white meat chicken bowl, but I have since opened my horizons to other great entrees at kokoro. The shoyu ramen is great as is the spicy chicken splash. Get the gyoza. And my most recent discovery is the forest child soup, if you like mushrooms you'll love it. Fast service and easy on the wallet. I can't complain :)

We have been customers of this restaurant for 25+ years and generally have enjoyed the food and service expected for a fast food type Japanese restaurant - until yesterday. We had not been in for a few months and found a different experience on this visit: After ordering from dirty curling & worn menus (we had to ask for them) our waitress did not return (we found out later that she 'went on her break.') Thirty minutes later she returned, surprised to see that we still had no food and that no one had bothered to fill in for her. After checking with the kitchen she reported back that they had not even begun to prepare our orders. What's worse, during this time they had serviced many many cars through their drive through. Enough already: we left and do not plan to return. The long time staff (many knew most of their customers by name) are gone; the manager who used to be present at peak times was nowhere to be seen; the arguments between the kitchen staff and waiters were for all to hear. Considering our experience awarding even one star seems overly generous.

Kokoro was just alright.. I had the kokoro bowl and tried the philadelphia rolls.. everything was decent.. and seemed relatively healthy. Nothing too special... Pretty similar to a teriyaki chicken bowl from Tokyo Joe's... I think I would come back to try the ramen.. but I wouldn't come back for the Kokoro bowl. The staff was super nice and I appreciated that they were so sweet :)

I usually come here for my quick Japanese food fix. My faves are the tempura bowl, shoyu ramen, gyoza, chicken curry bowl, and shrimp tempura roll. If you're looking for a culinary masterpiece, you've come to the wrong place. This is just simple Japanese fast food. It's better to eat inside than to go through the drive-thru to assure that your order is right. If you decide to use the drive-thru, then I highly suggest you check your order before leaving as it's usually missing food or the wrong food is given. As for the service inside, it's a hit or miss. There's one server in particular who gets on my nerves. Her name is Yulia. She doesn't take your drink order right away and on more than one occasion she's forgotten to bring part of my order, then when reminded, she's brings it and charges me twice. This has happened too many times and it's getting old. She can also be quite rude unless you're one of her regulars. I don't like being treated like a liar when I'm being overcharged every time I come in here and I'm only paying for what I actually received. She needs to pay attention to what she's doing and learn how to be professional. I've also ordered their sushi party tray. It's a pretty good deal for the amount of sushi you get. It's not high grade sushi, but it's good enough for a casual house party. I like to order it a couple of hours in advance.

Really - I had the Korkoro Bowl - meat tastless as was the chicken, that is if you could find any! and the thick out of a jar chemical tasting sauce on top UGH! My friend had the veg bowl also with some thick brown stuff...How about making your own sauce...The man next to me found a hair in his bowl.. This place needs a make-over and not just the food...

When I came to Kokoro many years ago (1999), it basically had a menu not much better than what I could find at Tokyo Joe's. In recent years, I had heard they had updated the menu and had started serving Ramen, and the quality of the food had increased substantially. Upon visiting last week, I found this to be quite true. We ordered the miso Ramen with extra shoyu eggs and substituted the white meat chicken for the pork. The broth was quite flavorful, the Ramen was well-cooked without being too hard or too soft, and there were lots of nice veggies in the bowl. This may not have been Izakaya or Sushi Den quality, however, for the price it could not be beat. I had a couple beers with my meal, because the prices were very good during happy hour. We also started our meal with some potstickers, which were excellent. The meal club here, Arigato, offers double points for meals purchased on Sundays. Service was good. Try to come when the place isn't too busy if you have that option.

I've been coming here for over 20 years. This is still on my top ten list of places to eat. I love the convenience of the drive thru. The Kokoro Bowl has always been my favorite still is. Staff has always been super friendly too!

I've been going to this place since I was a little kid and it's always been great. I think I have tried everything on the menu at least once in my life. My favorites are the chicken vegetable bowl with spicy teriyaki, curry bowl, miso soup and philly roll. They obviously don't specialize in sushi but it's very yummy anyway. The service is always quick and friendly and the place feels very clean. It's always crowded there. Tips: Seat yourself Put extra ginger (red shredded stuff at every table) on your bowl because it's amazing

Good japanese food for a reasonable tab. Very interesting and modern dining space. Had the kokoro bowl w beef and chicken- was fairly satisfied. Overall id recommend this place for anyone interested in getting a quick bite in a semi-casual dining space. Not really like a "date night" sushi spot though.

I've been going to this location for Japanese food since the 70s (though names have changed). I love the current menu which is far superior with many more items.

Enjoy a fast alternative but with good food! Food is served fast by friendly efficient wait staff. I like to ask for my soft drink in a Togo cup so I can take a refill with me. Going after rush hours helps in finding a seat and parking too!

This place is the original Tokyo Joe's and I think it's much better. It's quaint, friendly, and efficient so I'm all about it. It's been around for many years so I figure it's a staple and should be honored and visited often. Love me the simplicity of this restaurant. It's totally casual so walk in, have a seat and the kind staff will be with you shortly. There are many food options so if you're new, take a moment to take a gander. I usually stick with the same old trusted chicken and rice. I know - I'm so exciting. But if it ain't broke don't fix it. However, there are a ton of options which is always a plus. When you come in you can either sit at a table (for groups of 3 or more) or belly up to the bar. I prefer the latter option just because it's different from most restaurants. The servers come right up to you and take your order - in no time flat you've got your meal. It's that simple! As far as easy squeezy goes for delicious food that is inexpensive Kokoro is a solid option. I definitely don't go as frequently as I should.

Super fast, convenient, easy and yummy. The Chipotle of Japanese food. Ordered the Splash bowl (a warm bowl of noodle soup with tofu and mushrooms) on a rainy night 10 minutes before closing by phone, for pick up. Arrived and was checked out in 30 seconds! The decor and food aren't going to win any Michellin stars, but for a neighborhood restaurant this place is great. And wins extra points for being affordable, quick and healthy.

I've been a loyal Kokoro customer for many years. In the past. it was always my favorite place to get take out when I didn't feel like cooking. I usually order the Kokoro Bowl with Red Bird white meat chicken, beef, vegetables, and brown rice. Sadly, I doubt I will ever return after tonight's really awful dinner. Not only was the portion far smaller than ever before, but the dish had absolutely no flavor. At all previous visits, the meat and vegetables were plentiful. In tonight's bowl, there were two small bites of chicken, a few bites of thin, stringy beef, one lone piece of broccoli, and one small carrot. I am deeply saddened by this turn of events. Next time I will go to Panera's or Garbanzo's where the meals are fresh and delicious and you can count on the size of the portions.

I have eaten here for over 10 years and lost a significant amount of weight because of it. Quality Red Bird chicken, delicious ingredients, and a small but comfortable atmosphere. Kokoros is the perfect place to go regularly for lunch or dinner. Gluten free options available and normally my wife (with celliac) is fine however there is the occasional slip up.

This place is sacred to me, the staff are an amazing group of folks, the food is solid and fresh, the place is nice and cozy, and service is super fast (as in I can't even finish a carafe of sake before my food is placed in front of me.) The heaping bowls of ramen are good and comforting (both shoyu and miso, miso being my favorite) I like to order an extra shoyu egg and a side of stewed white onions in beef broth for more goodness-plus I'm an onion freak, and top the whole steamy bowl off with a few shakes of togarashi. The Arigato points program is so great, I have acquired many free bowls from using it. I only wish the place was closer to my home, if it were I might never cook a single thing again-just show up at Kokoro for every meal! I will see you soon Kokoro, very soon.

I went with a friend tonight to Kokoro. I bought a Groupon b/c I had been wanting to try it. I really wish I hadn't... We ordered a variety of food. We ordered Unagi Rolls, Salmon Rolls, California Rolls, Keystone Roll (appetizer), Spicy Tuna Roll, Salmon Rice Bowl, and a Spicy Chicken Noodle dish. Pretty good range of things to try... The appetizer was not good. I'm not sure how you can mess up a Vietnamese Spring roll, but they managed... Yuck. The Unagi was just eh. Not good, not completely terrible. Just... Eh. The Salmon roll had to be sent back. It was foul. My friend ordered the spicy noodle dish and the spicy tuna roll---so I can't speak to how good those were or were not. The service was good. The bathrooms were gross. We won't be back...

Can't sit where you want and they are rude about it too. Worst customer service available. If you like being uncomfortable while eating, eat here On top of the rude service the server got me spicy teriyaki sauce which I did not want and then proceeded to go eat her own food and I had to flag another server down to fix it. Overall very disappointed and upset with the service at this location. The Arvada location is much better With better service, and better food.

Good menu, great service. Food was good. Don't know if I'd drive that far from where I am to eat there again just for the food, but if I'm in the area, I would hit them up again.

A good friend of mine and I decided to stop by and try this restaurant . We walked in and wanted to set whenever we wanted to but that was not possible since their limited space /room so if you see a little sign on a table " 4+ " don't seat there lol . Our waitress was a little girl and she was amaZing, she was the best server ever . Unfortunately, our food too forever and the portions were way too small . If you eat a lot like myself make sure to order twice. Lol Prices are okay and affordable . Thanks !

I have probably been to Kokoro a hundred times over the last decade and a half. My Dad discovered Kokoro in 1997, and I've been going regularly ever since. I am a huge fan of the sobaghetti. Happy hour is all evening and weekend, so don't forget a large hot sake!

Been coming to this place for decades and I haven't done the review yet? Not much changed from decades ago. just lil different menus with offerings of rolls and beer/sake. Green tea use to be free but glad to be paying $0.90 for a pot of marvelous tasting tea. For a beef bowl, often comes out kinda dry and you can ask for extra juice. Just love the red ginger. It's clean, fast and reasonably priced. Service is consistent and nothing to complaint. Lenny and her sister is always friendly. For beef bowl, one must acquire the taste of kokoro seasoning. Don't forget to sign up for Arigato reward card. There is also group on deal too.

Been going here for 15 years -- My go-to for cheap 'comfort' food. Have never gotten anything other than the steamed pork shumai dumplings and beef bowl. Always consistent. Plus I looove that red seasoning spice!!! And the fact they sell Hello Panda cookies.

I've been coming here ever since I can remember. Always good customer service food in a timely manner. Until recently seems like most of their staff has changed my two past visits have been awful my server never put my order in never apologized cursed out loud like that was gonna be a resolution after wasting 20 minutes I walked out. Then the next time I went through the drive thru trying to avoid the opportunity of my order being forgotten again, pulling away I hear a splash they didn't put a lid container on my soup, but packed it away in bag an handed it to me. Overall very disappointed don't waste your time or money.

I've been going here for more than thirty years, back when it was called "The Beef Bowl" and it has always been consistently delicious, clean and fast. It's is the best Beef Domburi I've ever had, the meat is exceptional. I've had the whole menu and I can honestly say it's all delicious.

The food here is just about the worst crap I have ever been served. I drive by this place and marvel at how they have managed to stay in business. First, you are not allowed to sit at a booth unless you have 3 people. It does not matter if the place is empty, they will MAKE you and your date MOVE to another table. And, they have an entire booth set up for the waitresses to roll silverware and they put a sign up saying it's "reserved for waitstaff" or something to that effect. Outrageous, IMO. I'm a customer, about to overpay for a bowl of MSG water and frozen backfin tuna, and you want me to move over there so my waitress can roll silverware? what is this world coming to? Sorry if I am harping, but jeesh, I already said this was just about the worst crap I've ever been served.

Kokoro Bowl is everything you want in a Japanese bowl restaurant. Friendly service, fresh ingredients, fast turns, and cheap. The eponymous Kokoro Bowl is steamed rice topped with chicken, beef, and vegetables - and it is awesome. Every time I drive by the restaurant the Kokoro Bowl calls to me like a particularly tasty and masochistic pokemon. The menu also has some great appetizers as well, but seriously - don't ignore the call of the Kokoro.

  • Erin T.

Wow this place has really gone downhill in recent months. Prices get higher while food quality goes down. Don't ever go through the drive-thru - you will lose years off your life and your order will be wrong. And finally, thanks to an incredibly rude server named Yulia (yes, Yulia) who has been there forever -- I will never return. She has always been awful and I avoid her like the plague, but today when she refused to take a mistake off my bill and yelled at me in front of customers, I vowed I will never return. How this woman still has a job is beyond my comprehension.

One of my favorite restaurants in denver! My dad and I have been eating at kokoro for 12 years! Service is great, the price is amazing for healthy food! I've turned 4 friends on to it and they now drive from highlands ranch to go there. Get the shumai and a chicken curry bowl!! A+ kokoro!!

I have been a loyal Kokoro patron for over 17 years. I don't even live in Colorado anymore but I still make a point of visiting Kokoro when I'm in town. The food is simple and cheap but delicious. Whether dining in the restaurant or using the drive through, the food quality is always high and served quickly. The chicken teriyaki bowl is a favorite of mine. Their California rolls are very fresh and accompany the bowls nicely. For a quick, delicious Japanese meal, Kokoro is the way to go!

Kokoros is a delicious Japanese restaurant. It is not very crowded unless it is 1-3 days after the bowl club members get their coupons for those two months. The food is delicious. I can not remember when we started going there. kokoros is great. The atmosphere is normally not very crowded. The bowl club members get coupons every 2 months. When they get their coupons it can be up to a 3 hour wait to get in. Kokoros doesn't have very long lines, normally. The food is delicious at Kokoros. The katsu is delicious. the katsu comes with an Asian sauce. The katsu is an appetizer there. The katsu is best with miso soup I can not remember when I started going there. I have at least been going there for more than a year. Kokoros just lured me in after going to the park down by the Zoo. Ever since I have been going there. Kokoros is healthy and fast. It is a great non fast food restaurant to eat at. Kokoros is delicious place to eat at.

Delicious, fast, decent food that's been that way for a long time. Not going to break the bank but not going to thrill you either. My wife loves the unagi (eel) bowls.

The Sobaghetti is spicy, soba perfection and I'm craving it right now typing out this review. Kokoro is pretty much my go to for healthy Japanese food. The drive through is wonky though and a pain... Worth it though.

  • Akina L.

IThe reviews are right about this place being fast an cheap. Paid 5$ for a beef curry bowl and waited les than one minute at the drive through ! Good for to go during a short lunch break. I wouldn't say the food was Great though. Maybe even less than average, but you get what you pay for.

My first trip to Kokoro was for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. My boyfriend I went because Kiki's was closed. I ordered the Shoyo Ramen, an egg roll and the edamame. He ordered the Kokoro Bowl and fried gyoza. The edemame and gyoza were good, but tasted no different than generic chinese food. The Kokoro Bowl was bland and average - white rice, chicken, and pre-made teriyaki sauce - no better than a frozen meal. The Shoyo Ramen was terrible with bland ramen, bland broth, and bland boiled egg - I've had chicken stock with more flavor. I was completely underwhelmed. I was baffled when I first walked in and noticed that at least 80% of the customers were over 50. It seems to be a hotspot for people looking for cheap and boring food. On a positive note, the waitress was attentive. Kiki's, just one block away, will remain our go-to spot for tasty and affordable Japanese country food.

  • Oli S.

I have been a Kokoro fan for most of my life. I remember when they were just called Beef Bowl and that is all that they served. The menu has diversified now, but I still find myself ordering the same thing over an over. The place is fast and cheap and the food tastes great.

    (5)
  • Taj M.

Kokoro is fast and relatively cheap, with all natural chicken available. I have to respect a Japanese place that offers brown rice. I go straight for the Kokoro bowl with brown rice and dark meat chicken, a little beef, and some other stuff thrown in. Good stuff. The drive thru is fast and convenient, too.

  • David C.

Kokoro is a local chain of three (now two) and I wish they'd add one or two more, most specifically out by my work! I usually end up at this location, though I also enjoyed the one on Broadway, at least until it closed in October 2011. The Colorado Boulevard location has a drive-through that is open at peak hours, adding to the quick service you get here. It's fast, cheap, healthy, and good. Hard to beat that. I almost always get the chicken and vegetable bowl, but they have a good variety of rice bowls and noodle dishes to go along with a limited sushi and appetizer menu. They offer your choice of white or dark chicken meat and white or brown rice on the bowls. It's not the best Japanese food ever, but it's so much better than fast food and at a very similar price. 6 dollars will net you a good-sized meal here, and I think it's much better than other similar restaurant chains that offer quickie Asian-style rice bowls. The sushi that I've tried has been ok, certainly better than the stuff you get at the grocery store but of course not as good as at an actual sushi restaurant. I'll try the noodles at some point because I have to have noodles on a regular basis, but usually I head here when I want the old standby.

  • Megan G.

I went here two nights in a row- it was that yummy! My boyfriend is from the area and went here alot as a kid, and is always raving about it- he was right. It did not disappoint. My favorite was the Forrest Child soup, which I ordered both nights and of which I will probably dream about til we come back to Colorado. The first night I ordered the veggie bowl which was very very tasty especially when I added the pickled ginger to it. The second night ( and the reason I am ONLY giving it four out of five stars ) I ordered the chicken bowl which was smooooothered in very sweet teriyaki sauce. The chicken itself was very tender but the entire bowl was too over powered by all the sauce. I also appreciate the option of white or brown rice. I would love to try a noodle bowl when I return. I would definitely reccommend this place to my friends for cheap eats, yummy, fast food and a friendly staff.

Kokoro is a Denver classic: they consistently serve fast and delicious Japanese food, and in all the years I've been going there, I've never been disappointed. Their specialty is their variety of teriyaki bowls: you can choose any combo of beef, chicken (regular or white meat), and vegetables, over either brown or white rice. Service is friendly and efficient, and their prices are very low. Their edamame comes with a peanut sauce that is delicious. Their California rolls are always fresh, and the chicken katsu is a particular favorite of picky eaters. Kokoro should be a staple for anyone that wants to eat well on the go.

  • Tali M.

So good. I think it's a great place for a quick, inexpensive, and healthy meal. They have lots of options, meat, chicken, salmon, or veggies. They also have different sauces. If you go to their website they have their nutrition info which is very helpful. I am taking a star because they say their California roll says it has pollock, and when we double checked she said it was actually imitation crab, so as someone who does not eat shellfish it's frustrating because imitation crab usually has a little crab in it. Otherwise this place is great.

Went there on recommendation from Yelp, food was not great, sushi was horrible. I would not eat there again. The image on Yelp is not of the right place. I have uploaded a proper picture of the Kokoro @ 2390 S Colorado Blvd. The restaurant reminds me of a Japanese iHop.

This was a pleasant surprise, far from pricey and not trying to make you feel like it's trying to impress you with it's seating, just quick service and really good food. It had me as soon as I ordered hot tea, which was only 79 cents and came out in a pot? Did I read my bill right?

Great Japanese luncheonette. I love their Udon bowl, Chicken Katsu, and Age Shumi is the best....Wonderful happy hour prices on the weekend. I always get wonderful service and good prices.

Beef Bowl piled with ginger, Forest Child Soup can't be beat. The Shoyu Ramen is a welcome addition but the broth still needs a little work. I tried it at the Arvada location and it was completely different, a little less fishy. Been dining here for years and will continue to do so. Service is always good.

Great place for a fast, healthy, inexpensive, delicious meal. They serve both white and brown rice as well as Red Bird white-meat chicken. My favorite is the Salmon Bowl. I only wish they had more Sushi.

I'm giving Kokoro five stars because it is consistently good, inexpensive, friendly and unpretentious. My husband ate there often for many years. I order what he recommends: the beef teriyaki bowl, which is perfect, and we always share an order of chicken tonkatsu or two. I appreciate being able to order the well-prepared brown rice.

Light and fast. The use of Red Bird Chicken and the option of Brown or white rice is nice. inexpensive menu, tasty curry bowls and Katsu's, and kid friendly (with the plastic chopstick helpers for children and novice) makes this one of our favorite options when dining out.

An Inexpensive, quick and healthy option for Japanese food. Go for happy hour!

Kokoro's isn't bad for quick, relatively cheap Japanese food. However, think of it as the fast food of "Japanese." The environment is more like a school cafeteria, and you can choose stool seating or booth. Service isn't bad at all, but they seem to be a little quiet and more about getting you in and out than anything. I recommend going a block south to Kiki's if you want really good Japanese food, but Kokoro's has the advantage in that it's probably better for American palates and kids.

Quick, simple, friendly, cheap. Best shrimp tempura ever. Try the green tea cheesecake, too.

Kokoro is a good and fast Japanese lunch option. I like the salmon bowel (although too much rice in my opinion) with some Miso soup. They have a drive through which is cool I guess. It definitely has a fast food Japanese feel. If you want real Japanese then drive another block south to Kiki's.

Good healthy fast Japanese food. So authentic inside too. It reminds me of places I ate at in Japan. They have great, friendly, service too. It's always clean and pleasant inside. I can't wait to go again. I love the spicy noodle bowl!

Best bowl place I have ever had. I love this place. I moved to California and hate the lack of Kokoro out here. The first stop every time I get off the plane when I go back to Colorado to visit is Kokoro. My family has learned and now they just bring me a Super Teriyaki Chicken bowl when they pick me up.

i rate this place a little better than tokyo joe's. menu's a bit simpler but quality is better i think. this location also has free hot tea if u ask.

Working in the hospitality industry, I'm a sucker for service, and this place has consistently friendly service. Not only is the service great but the people working here look like they are having fun, and enjoy working . Props to the management, you are doing a fantastic job at keeping your staff happy- which in turn makes your customers happy. As for the food I always get the tempura splash and a big thing of Sake it's like 10 bucks and I leave stuffed and happy. The sushi is OK but for 2 bucks I cant complain. Non pretentious/ tasty food with happy servers , makes me a a very happy repeat customer.

Second week of October, 2014. Read the reviews, and was determined to brave the beastly traffic on Colorado Blvd., and give this place a try. "Never again..." and here is why. The lady at the drive through really made no effort to get the order right. We ordered one beef bowl, one shrimp bowl, and some dumplings. Wait, wait, wait, wait, and the cars behind us grow into a long line. The big moment comes, and we look in the and the order is incorrect. Very nicely we point this out to her, "Sorry 'bout that". (I hear that from a server and I just do not think she was one bit sorry at all....) Ever so slowly we get a refund. We had ordered a drink, -- by this time I feel so guilty about the line behind us, I just tell her to forget the drink and drive on. Open the beef bowl........very nice DRY beef (at least it was not fatty) on top of DRY old rice. I mean this rice was made at 2:00 p.m. and we came by about 7:00 p.m. Yes, dry beef, on top of dry rice, no sauce, no sauce included in the bag, and this is not inexpensive food. The dumplings were very tasty, but that "Sahara Desert Beef Bowl, -- we are trying Tokyo Joe's next.

The original... As good as 5 stars gets. My family and I have been coming here for beef bowls, chicken bowls, Kokoro bowls, Goya, chicken katsu, forest child soup, salads and more for going on 3 decades... Yep since I was a little boy and I am turning 29 in a week. I don't get the one star reviews. This is a single $ eatery... Judge it as such.. The McDonald's of Japanese food? What do you expect for $5-6? You can barely get a side of rice at Benihana for that price. I don't expect excellence in this price point of my dining experience... But Kokoro delivers... Forever Yours

Food is good, but when we walked in, there were absolutely NO clean tables. The employees didn't look too busy. It was only when it was mentioned that they began clearing tables.

Love this place. The chicken katsu is the bomb. I always get the kokoro or the beef n veg bowl. The staff is friendly. Food is out generally fast. My family has been going here for a long time and we always enjoy the stop!

I love this place. It is fast food Japanese style. The bowls are full of white or brown rice and topped with your favorite vegis and meats then drizzled in teriyaki sauce. I love the red pickled ginger and spicy shaker pepper available to further customize your bowl. The drink refills just keep coming. I always feel like I had a friendly, filling and healthy lunch! Japanese comfort food served at a counter!

Consistent, cheap, with an old coffee-shop feeling. I was first introduced to Kokoro when I first moved to Colorado some mumble years ago, by the folks I worked with at the time. It was my first experience with Japanese rice bowls, and remains my favorite to date. I love the lunch-counter ambiance so reminiscent of my days at "Chock full o'Nuts" in mid-town Manhattan some mumble years ago. Yulia has been a fixture there the whole time. My regular, a chicken curry bowl with white rice, sometimes augmented with gyoza constitutes comfort food par excellence!

  • Aileen D.

I came down myself to grab takeout and was glad that I convinced myself to sit at the counter. The service was quick and friendly. I had a bowl of udon and chicken katsu.....reminded me of my childhood in Hawaii when my parents would take us to the okazu at Ala Moana. Great memories. The food was comforting, certainly not too gourmet, but priced right and made the way I like it. I will most certainly become a regular.

Had not been to Kokoro for a very long time and have never been to this location. The resturant was pretty dead and was told the two of us could not sit at a four top table. The waitress was snotty about the whole situation and did not give us menu's because the two top tables were not her section. The wait staff wasn't very welcoming but the food was just how I remembered it.

Coming from LA, I've enjoyed a variety of great ramen noodles. My friend recommended Kokoro to me as an alternative in Denver. Seeing as they've been open for 25 years, I figured they were worth a try. We ordered the gyoza, unagi rolls, and miso ramen. The gyoza were deep fried and nothing special. The unagi rolls had a very small piece of unagi inside. The miso ramen was very salty. There weren't as many noodles as I would have liked. Everything is reasonable priced on their menu. Only thing is if you're remotely hungry you will need an appetizer and main dish. Then the price comes out to about $15 per person. For that price try Domo. They have great flavors and hearty portions.

I adore this place. First tried it out when I moved to Glendale about 15 years ago. Really enjoyed it and was a regular for a few years and then I moved away. About 5 years ago, I moved back to South Denver area. I became reacquainted with Kokoro and the love affair has been going strong ever since. I love the fact that they offer brown rice for the with the rice bowls. The decor is adequate and service is always friendly. The restaurant also has drive-thru, which is quite interesting, but it does work. We tend to either eat in or order to go inside. When ordering to go, the food is brought out to you so quickly. In recent years, Kokoro added a customer loyalty card, an Arigato card, that tracks your purchases. Once you get to 5,000 points, you receive a free meal. In the past couple of years, Arigato members also receive coupons every few months for discounted meals. The coupons tend to remind me that I need to go in and dine again My favorite is the Sobaghetti and the chicken teriyaki bowl. The Splash is also wonderful and highly recommended. I don't think you can go wrong here. Lots of different choices, something for everyone. And don't miss out during the summer when they offer flavored sake!

A frequent lunch spot for me. Good, cheap and fast. The parking lot is tight, so be careful backing out -- especially when there are people waiting for the drive up window. The atmosphere "dive-ish", but that's ok by me.

Our go-to Japanese fast food. It is basic, not gourmet. For what they are, it is very good and nicely inexpensive. The splash bowl may be my daughter's favorite food to eat out, and she gets gyoza too. My hubby and I either get a bowl or some sushi. Service is always friendly and efficient. I think they've had some of the wait staff for decades. They are all capable and quick.

Went here one night when the real Japanese restuarant down the street was closed. Took my daughter, aged 24. It was late but quite busy. It had the ambiance of a diner. The menu was a range of Japanese items. I have eaten in Okinawa and Osaka and my daughter loves sushi. We had a mix of sushi and of other dishes, including seaweed salad which I love. The food was bad by any standard. The only thing that was barely passable was a chicken noodle dish I ordered, can't recall which. She didn't even like the sushi; it was tough and fell apart at the same time. It was cheap but sometimes things are not bargains. I don't eat very many places where I wonder if I will get sick but this was one of them. The staff was very nice and pleasant and service was good. The crowd was interesting. I wished I'd liked this cheap chain for Japanese food.

The original Kokoro in Denver. The service is blazingly fast, the food is good and I've never had a problem with any meal I've had here. It's not the best Japanese restaurant in the whole world, but for the price point and the aforementioned details, it's hard to beat Kokoro on Colorado Boulevard. The space is well used with a contoured counter in the center of the room, table seating around the periphery and a host stand/check out station situated near the kitchen. The Yakisoba is good, the rice bowls have all been consistently decent, and the sushi offerings are above average. Kokoro is a staple on this side of town.

Never going to understand the low/negative views on Kokoro. This isn't a high-class, high-end Japanese sushi house, nor a fancy Asian restaurant. They advertise cheap, easy, quick, and delicious food, and that is EXACTLY what you get. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm a fan of their shrimp tempura bowl: hot tasty broth with just the right amount of goodies and noodles. Perfect for a sore throat, a cold day, or just a quick meal. The sushi is so-so, but good for the price and the selection. If you come here expecting the best meal of your Japanese cuisine life, you'll be disappointed. If you come here with an appetite, not much to spend, and an understanding of the type of restaurant you've walked into, you'll be happy. I'm a fan for a little treat if I'm in the area, nuff said.

I first tried this place with a friend of mine from the International house @ DU. I've never tried this kind of menu before. I order the chicken curry bowl with white rice along with gyoza which enhances the flavor. They are consistent with their food and have an okay customer service.

Perfect ending to what wasn't an all-that-relaxing Mother's Day weekend. Husband worked both days this last weekend, thus I spent most of both days finding ways to entertain my ill son and his not-ill little sister without letting the TV suck out their brain cells for hours on end. Sunday night he came home and kicked me out to "go topless" in the jeep to enjoy the summer eve weather and grab myself something I hankered for... which, this time, meant all roads led to Kokoro. I didn't go in to experience the service, but I did relish their easy drive-thru where I ordered an unagi bowl on udon noodles and a couple of egg rolls. My food was fresh, still hot when I got home and a delightful ending note to my weekend. It seems criminal to be able to have tasty sushi via drive-thru, yet Kokoro pulls it off. Yay for me and everyone else!

It's ok. The food is perfectly fine. It's a bit bland in my opinion. I like that they serve brown rice and you can get a decent beer. Other than that it's nothing too exciting. Good service.

I love this place! The beef bowl is amazing. I've been a happy customer for 6 years and I always go here for lunch (my school is on the same block so I can just walk there) Waiters and waitresses are very friendly. I encourage using the Arigato! card to get free bowls. There is a dairy queen less than 20 feet away so if you don't feel like eating some dessert at this great restaurant you can always stop there as well. I've tried everything else on the menu and it is all delicious. If you're in the area, stop by for sure! Cheap, fast, and delicious!

I would call Kokoro strictly average. It's not great, but it's never bad. It's not expensive, nor is it dirt cheap. You'll get a good lunch here fairly quickly, but nothing to write home about.

Reviewing the drive-in experience. Kind of awkward as we totally missed the first entrance and then the entrance to the drive-in has a no-left turn sign but we were on the street and no car coming anyways so we slid in from there (another car had did so too) as well as the one behind us. The lady who we ordered from had a thick accent which I am not whining against but she chose to speak really fast which usually isn't good for the drive-in communication. My ESL mom took it as an incomprehensible language so I had to scream the order from my passenger seat. Interesting experience. The food came out really fast. The taste is -okay- its just piping hot which is why its enjoyable when you are hungry.

You gotta admit this particular place is pretty unique, plus any Japanese joint that serves brown rice gets extra points. The problem is this is one of those places that serve Krab with a "K". Kalifornia rolls. Anyone can make a decent kukumber or avokado roll, but to pass off Alaskan pollock in a roll is a krime, and I see (and loathe) it everywhere. I'd love to give this place 3 stars because it's a great alternative to other forms of fast food, plus the roller koaster kounter design is kind of fun. Ultimately, it tips the scales as a 2. 44 rather than a 2.45 when it komes to rounding up.

What a bunch of bozos. We walked in at 11 AM and sat in a booth. We were ambushed and asked to sit somewhere else because booths are for 3 or more people. There was only 4 people in the place and lunch time was an hour away. We got up and left because the server and manager forced the issue. Probably worked out for the best because the restaurant smelled like urine anyway.

We live this healthy, fast, Japanese food. We will drive 30 minutes just to eat here. I think after almost 20 years eating we have tried everything on their menu and we love it all. My 5 year old loves the gyoza, my 11 year old loves the ramen. It's a go to favorite for our family.

This place follows the law of diminishing returns. The first time or two you eat there, you say Neat! Cheap! Unsual! But then the newness wears off and you begin to see the dining experience for what it truely is --japanese mcdonalds. Try it- then once it disgusts you- head up the block to Kiki's which is the real deal. It's a coupla bucks more but twice the size and 10 times more tasty!

I've been curious about this place, it's hidden away off Colorado Blvd and it has a drive thru, so one day I finally went. Bleh. I got the chicken and rice bowl and some sushi, it was not that good. I don't know what else to say other than it just wasn't that good. Nothing in particular really, I just didn't like it. Tokyo Joe's is much better if you are looking for quick bowls and sushi.

  • Terry K.

First , let me start out by saying the drive through at this place is DANGEROUS AS HELL to pull out of when you leave. If you ignore my review, and try Kokoro anyway, be careful. Second, the food is the worst Japanese I've ever had. This place IS the McDonalds of Japanese food. Third, if the place is busy inside you should know the two four tops adjacent to the cash register are for employees to roll silverware, not for paying customers. My wife and I made the mistake of trying to sit down at the "rolling table" and were chastised by the manager of the store. The attitude by the entire staff is substandard. I've tried this dump 3 times because it's fast, cheap and close, but it sucks!!!

This place is beyond nasty. Let me start off by saying I was really excited to find a drive-thru Japanese place in town. I mean, what could possibly be better??? Well, sometimes all that glitters is not gold. We ordered some kind of shrimp bowl, something with noodles that I do not remember and some egg rolls. Our food tasted like soggy deep fried aquarium and a**. I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I called to complain. The woman who answered the phone didn't understand a single word I said and kept telling me things that had absolutely nothing to do with what I was telling her. I finally got a manager who was very apologetic, refunded our money and made us promise to try them again. So we did. A few days later we ordered the same thing and it was just as disgusting if not more. We were both feeling pretty ill later that night and vowed we would never eat there again. If you like Japanese food McDonald's style or diving in dumpsters for dinner, I guess this is the place for you. If not save your pennies and go somewhere kinder to your mouth and tummy.

I really love the chicken bowls. I enjoy the fact that you can get good brown rice as well. Today I was craving sushi and remembered that they had some on the menu the last time I went so I decided to give it a try. I think the bowls are the way to go. The sushi was cheap but not very tasty. The staff is friendly and I appreciate a place that can provide a healthy lunch that is good with fast service.

Great joint. I've been coming here since I was a kid. I think of it as quick and healthy fastfood. I recommend chicken curry, California roll (it's not fancy but tastes great), pork cutlet (not so healthy), splash is also tasty and healthy. Inari sushi is alwasys satisfying, although hard to ruin.

My old stompin' grounds. Even though I moved into the 'burbs I still get over there. Quick fun Japanese food! They have the greatest Chicken/Veggie Bowl and appetizers. The chicken is Red Bird and they have both white and brown rice. My friends really enjoy their California rolls. It's a change from the fast food places and it's worth the trip. They have both dine-in and pick up with a drive thru as well.

My first visit was with my friend Big Money (not his real name) a few years back. He, like some street corner crack dealer, suggested I give the shrimp tempura rolls and white chicken and veggie bowl a try. What a sadistic man he was. Now, often I night, I wake up screaming, covered in sweat and violently rocking with chills if I stay away too long. The withdrawls from Kokoro can be a bit disabling. The service is always fast, the food is always good, and the boast a happy hour with $2.00 shrimp tempura rolls. Foodgasm to be sure. I have been to all three locations, and they have all been the same quality and service... I am a Kokoro fan for life...

  • Roland O.

Usually quick and delicious do not go hand in hand but in this instance it does! I was starving and decided to try out Kokoro to see what it had to offer and was pleasantly surprised by the clean counters and quick service. I was actually reminded of all those little restaurants in Japan with the similar counter layouts and food offerings. The biggest difference would be the amount of people working inside...in Japan there usually is one or two not the 6-8 that I saw there. I gave Kokoro a "$" even though my meal cost over $10 because I ordered a soft drink, chicken katsu, and a tempura noodle dish. You could easily get a main dish for under $10 which is a bargain for a place that you don't have to stand in line to order and the food is served to you to boot. This is the perfect place if you are tired of McDonalds (GASP!) but still want a quick and delicious meal while you are on the go. They also have a drive-thru which I didn't try. Don't mistake this place for a full blown restaurant but more a fast cafe style place to satisfy your craving for your favorite Japanese food...on the go. I'm thinking about taking the wife for dinner ;) Sorry to hear about the food poisoning case which is unfortunate and may have steered me away from this place but I would actually go back. Hot Yelp tip, parking lot in the rear, behind the drive-thru area.

We tried Kokoro for the first time today. I had a miso soup starter and the salmon bowl with brown rice. My partner had dumplings for a starter and the chicken rice bowl. The salmon was delicious and the brown rice option was a nice healthy treat. My partner's chicken was tasty, but there could have been more of it, with more sauce to flavor the rest of the rice. They have happy hour all day on the weekends, so the $2 beer was cool. Pleasant service, economical price, and healthy options will see me back in Kokoro's.

  • Kim S.

Please don't go to Kokoro expecting anything extraordinary. It's basically the McDonald's of Japanese food. That being said, everything is extremely well priced, and reasonably tasty. I'm a fan of the unagi and the beef bowls. The one time I tried the salmon bowl, it was almost too fishy (which is saying something, since I love fish). The food passes as "healthy" as there is the option for white meat Red Bird chicken, and brown rice, though frankly, the oil used to saute any of the items pretty much kills any possibility of this place being "diet friendly". Ultimately, if you want quick service, decent food, and not a lot of buck for your bang, Kokoro is a pretty solid choice.

  • Rebecca M.

My husband and I eat at Kukoro quite a bit. We both love the tempura veggie bundles. They are little bundles of heaven. I usually get either Miso soup or a dark chicken bowl. The food is always good and not expensive at all. Plus, the portions are pretty generous.

  • Aaron M.

First time trying this restaurant. I was with a friend who likes the place and always orders California rolls and miso soup. I got the Super Beef Curry Bowl and an order of gyoza. I've not had Japanese-style dumplings before, but compared to the ones I'm used to from Chinese restaurants, these had less filling, less flavor, and more frying. The Super Beef Curry Bowl had good flavor, but not much of the flavor seemed curry-like. It was a savory brown gravy with onion in it, which went well with the beef and the rice... but the dish says "curry" in the name, and the curry flavor is really what I expected to taste. It's entirely possible that this was a good rendition of a Japanese-style curry, but it was really not what I was hoping for.

I gotta be honest, I first had Kokoro in 1st grade and have been hooked ever since. Throughout my living in the western US no other place offers a beef bowl with beef that is NOT FATTY other than Kokoro. Don't screw around and order something weird, the beef bowl original, like the place was made famous for, is the best.

I live very close to Kokoro and have wanting to try it for quite a while. Last night, the S.O and I were craving cheap Japanese, so we stopped in. Our first impression was fairly good. While the decor is a bit shabby and plain, I like the sushi bar in the center of the room. It gives it a very community-like feel.I also found that the waiters were very friendly. We ordered a beef & brocolli bowl over Udon for the S.O + a california roll, an Unagi roll, and miso soup for me. We split Edamame. The Unagi roll was chewy and fishy. Probably the worst sushi I've ever had. I had one roll and left the other three, even though I was starving. Honestly, I feel a little ill just thinking about it. Grade? F The California Roll was fine. It wasn't gross, but I wouldn't say it was "good". I finished it, but I didn't feel satisfied. Grade? C. The Miso Soup was fine. Then again, it's pretty hard to screw up Miso. Grade? B. The Edamame was fine, also. I've tasted loads better. Several of the bottom pieces were burned (??). Grade? B. The S.O rated his dish a C. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about. Needless to say, we won't be returning. There are many other cheap and healthy options in this area to waste money on gross food!

This is another place that I have been going to for years. They add to the menu from time to time but they are always consistent. I love their curry bowl and their Japanese pickles. They are always fast and you can't beat the price. This is definitely a nice healthy alternative from fast food joints.. I have also tried their location at 6th and Broadway it is good as well.

Started going here over 30 years ago when it was a Tokyo Bowl. Inexpensive, great, fresh food. Their addition of brown rice recently is great and I love the Eel or Unagi bowl. With a tall Sapporo on the side, you get a great meal all for under $10. My son loves the beef bowl, and the Red bird chicken bowl is also tasty, healthy and cheap. And I echo the added value of their Arigato (thank you in Japanes) card - gets you even bigger discounts.
