Very reasonably priced and great portions! If you like left overs, this a good place to get take out from. I usually have two days worth of food. The shrimp dishes are my favorite. Their shrimp is bigger and juicier than at many other Chinese restaurants. I have eaten here at least 5 times. Every time, I'm not disappointed. Will definitely go back.

If you want to end up in the ER this is the place for you. Two days of vomiting and persistent migraines before finally going to the hospital on day three. I get migraines yearly and don't normally know what the trigger is. The last one I had was maybe the worst I have ever had. The only reason I'm blaming this place is that two of my neighbors had went to the ER after eating at this place for food poisoning. They more than likely use msg in their cooking and a former employee told me they don't wash their hands and leave food out overnight. I chose to have Chinese food and it almost killed me.

GREAT price for what you get- $6 for a work day meal that keeps you full almost the whole day? Count me in!! I recommend the sesame chicken or the cream cheese won tons. Those are my achilles heel. I could eat those won tons for every meal if they didn't have 67897 calories (accurate calorie count). I love this place and I love when my office gets it catered like they did today. Don't tell anyone but I definitely went back for seconds. Anyone who works downtown is probably still mourning the loss of CHINJA in the Republic Plaza, but Great Wall is pretty close to filling that hole in my heart.

Drunk Chinese food. CHECK! This makes us drunk asians happy after I've tied one on at a Colfax bar (this happens, a lot). I usually stumble in and order the fried chicken wings, shrimp toast, fried rice, egg foo young..actually the list goes on and on. This is not classy food by any means. It's dirty and definitely questionable. Also, don't use the bathroom....scary things have happened in there. However what this place lacks in ambiance it makes up for in delicious, greasy tasty chinese food. It probably helps to fight off an oncoming hangover too (speaking from experience!!!) Also, the people watching is A+++

If you're looking for a fancy restaurant then you'll be disappointed but if you're looking for great hole in a wall with good food, then you've found it. The menu might be a bit overwhelming, because they have pretty much anything you can imagine. We ordered: -Singapore mie fun: SO good! We ordered a spicy one and a regular one. Very tasty, and delicious! Huge portion. -Garlic pork: I love the garlic rice that comes with it. Pork also was tasty. -Beef lunch special It's fast, quick and tasty also very affordable with big portion.

This place is legit if you're looking for NY/NJ style chinese! I can't tell you how long I've been looking for food like this (YES they have pork egg rolls, YES they have boneless spare ribs). The pork fried rice isn't the best I've had but it's pretty damn good. Even the faded food picture menus in the place remind me of the east coast. Beware, this isn't your traditional Chinese place (like Panda Express), it's real american chinese.

Christmas Day 2014... I was delighted to find the "Great Wall", was open today, to my delight! Not being invited to any home for Christmas and not wanting to cook, I was hankering for anything open! As an almost good Jewish Boy I clamored for some Chinese... The order was expertly executed and delicious! So, my Holiday Christmas experience was just delightful! The vegetable egg foo young was great!

This isn't a gourmet Chinese place, so I wasn't expecting gourmet. What I needed was quick, cheap, late night grub. This hit the spot. The portions were large. The fried rice was really good. The pork dumplings had a homemade like skin, like my mom used to make. The general chicken was just okay. Same with the sweet and sour chicken. Decent, but nothing to brag about. I grew up on Mei fun from my mom, and this didn't even come close, but was still pretty good. I would definitely order here again though. Two combo meals (general chicken and sweet and sour chicken), a large order of Mei fun, and 8 pork dumplings for $30 delivered. 3.5 stars.

I ordered lunch (actually on 12/29/2014, just getting around to reviewing today) because it was incredibly snowy and I forgot my lunch. They quoted me an hour wait, I was expecting it to be an hour and half given the road conditions. Nope. The delivery guy was right on time. He has delivered to me before, and is always so nice and polite. He was clearly feeling rushed (again, road conditions were probably slowing him down), and thanked me for hurrying to retrieve my order. My food was hot and delicious. My lo mein was such a generous portion that it didn't even properly fit in the container, and I just finished the left overs for lunch today! I also love that the egg drop doesn't have the gross mushy peas/carrots/etc in it. Great Wall isn't asian fusion, and it isn't upscale. It's greasy, inexpensive, and amazing. Great Wall is the only thing that can truly sate my Chinese food craving.

We finally found a great chinese place that will deliver to us! Some of the items I have tried are: - FRIED CHICKEN WINGS: crunchy, juicy wings. A must try!! These blow other fried chicken places out of the park! - MONGOLIAN BEEF: this is very good. Only modification I would make is less onions next time, I feel like there was more onions than meat at times! You get so much though that it doesn't even matter because its still a steal of a deal! - HOUSE SPECIAL FRIED RICE: we have for sure had better fried rice. The taste of the fried rice was great, but again, had better. - LO MEIN with SHRIMP: We loved the lo mein. You get so much and it is tasty! We ordered all that a few days ago and we are already calling back for the fried chicken wings... they are THAT good!

Christmas eve Chinese food desires are REAL. I knew when looking for Chinese delivery on this eve of Christmas, that I would simply have to find nothing but Denver's best. My local roommates who guide me through the awesome food scene here are gone and I was afraid. After researching and going through the reviews of several other places I was so hungry that I simply impulse dialed this place, and started listening off what I hoped they had. I feel like I won the Chinese delivery lottery. I am a hard to please delivery Chinese food eater. I won't even consider another place after this. I love you Denver. Thanks for never letting me down..... also roommates are jealous.

I love you Great Wall!!!! Cheap, fast, "what you'd expect" Chinese food. It just is what it is. Great for delivery. Don't eat at the actual restaurant.

DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!! Do not order food from here. I am waiting since over two hours and still am while i write this post. I feel that yelpers need this insight as I do not want another hungry yelper to wait for their food into oblivion. I might edit this post once i get my food and review the cold food that may arrive. Update: Beef Chow mein arrived without any noodles in it. Cold and disgusting. The most terrible Chinese in Denver.

I have lived in this places delivery zone for years and for what it is it is perfect. A small little mom and pop type Asian takeout/delivery joint. Simple yet tasty. Sesame chicken and moo shoo pork are my faves. Don't forget to ask for chopsticks if you order delivery.

If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. Not only did I wait an hour and twenty-five minutes for my food, but the delivery guy went to the wrong address. I ordered Sesame Chicken. The many times I've had Sesame Chicken, I've never ever had one quite like this. It was hard, and cut into small strips. I am convinced it's pork. The broccoli that came with it was not even cooked. I called back the restaurant to tell them I think they messed up my order, and the man on the phone pretty much said no I'm wrong and that was their number one seller. I wouldn't say the food or the customer service was worth any stars. Never ordering here again!!!!

Just Awful folks, I had the Kung Po Chicken. It tasted funny. I ended up having to take a dump at Club Vinyl later that night. Ever have to take a dump at a club? It ain't cool folks. I will never forgive them for that. The music was good, though...at Vinyl, I mean, not at Great Wall.

They food is typical Americanized Chinese food. I walked in to make an order for two and took over 30 mins to prepare. Floors are greasy, but that's almost expected. Prices are descent. The customers are...well yeah, it's Colfax.

Basic basic basic equals traditional traditional traditional, no-frills Chinese food I love it, we're not talking about any Asian fusion or Mexican fusion it is basic Chinese food at its best, it's great for those nights when you just can't find anything to hit the spot it feels you up it's like comfort food before everything went fusion

Total hole in the wall dive, but the food was good. If you are right there and hungry you should totally stop by and have a bite. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

This update is strictly for delivery since I don't recall ever actually entering the place. I have tried literally every Asian deliver place within a 3-5 mile radius of my townhouse just North of Wash Park. You name it, I've tried it - Karma, Hoong Gate, Spicy Basil, Wokano, Thai Basil, Swing Thai, Thai Monkey Butt (I mean Club), 101, yadda yadda. And, I have to say that day-to-day, month-to-month I prefer Great Wall to them all. You certainly cannot complain about the prices and in my experience their delivery is the quickest around. (They deliver just about anywhere by the way.) The speedy service I get may be because they know me pretty well since I order on average of at least once every week or two and they know I'm going to tip the delivery guy well. I'm a pretty good haul from their Colfax location and I have yet to wait more than 30 minutes for my food. In fact, I often comment to the driver that he must be speeding to get down here so quickly. Never once in the probably 100 times I've ordered from them have they screwed up my order - knock on wood. Now having sung their praises let's talk about the food. If you like NYC Chinese delivery (which I do) you'll find Great Wall quite acceptable - some may find it "greasy". Fat is flavor - you can eat at True Food tomorrow. If you're looking for "authentic" Chinese or something "upscale" you'll be disappointed. This is American Chinese delivery/takeout. Once you make your peace with that you'll be fine. Here's what I recommend: Crab and Cheese Wontons, Bone-in Spare Ribs (far better than most Denver BBQ places IMO (lean and meaty - not falling off the bone but I like to gnaw on my ribs - a little hot mustard and I'm a happy boy), Egg Rolls are OK but I prefer the wontons, all their versions of Fried Rice are good, I switch off between the combination (House Special) Mei Fun (skinny rice noodles) and the House Special Egg Foo Young (3 big patties chock full of roast pork, shrimp, chicken and beef in the "traditional" brown gravy - oh yes!). I have yet to spend more than $20 and have plenty of leftovers for the next day if they last that long. I've been known to make a midnight raid on the cold spare ribs.

I had already tried them once already and I ordered the Kung pao chicken and I didn't like it at all the. The rice wasn't cooked well and they forgot my drink. I decided to try again since I forgot my lunch and I wouldn't have time to go out. This time I tried the shrimp lo mein and that was worse. They shrimp felt like rubber the food was cold. The noodles smelled like they were old! It took them an hr and 30mins, when they said said 40-50mins! They delivery guy was so extremely rude he threw the food at me and cussed me out on his was out! He was mad because I took too long to come down. Never again!

Thank you. The hot and sour soup was great. The beef and vegetables, delicious, even the egg roll was tasty. I will continue to order this Chinese delivery as they have definitely been the best yet for chinese food delivery in downtown. The only reason its a four and not a 5, is it took over an hour for the delivery.

  • Megan F.

If I could give it ZERO stars I would. Terrible customer service!!!!! I literally got cussed out on the phone after politely asking for extra broccoli. I hung up the phone and that was that. I'll never give this place my business.

  • Gail M.

Fast and super friendly delivery and amazing food. I got the spare ribs, wings, shrimp egg roll, beef w/ broccoli, and chix noodle soup. The ribs and wings were huge and super good. The shrimp egg rolls had big pieces shrimp in them and the beef w/ broccoli was huge and broccoli was plenty and nicely prepared. I've ordered from here before and wasn't impressed. I got the lo mien and the noodles were over cooked and the sweet n sour chix that was boring. It's all about ordering the right thing and I did tonight!!!!

Great Wall is a fantastic hole in the wall neighborhood Chinese restaurant. That being the case, only a fool would expect healthy or high quality Chinese food from this place. The food is tasty, affordable and available for at least 12 hours a day everyday! The hours of operation alone incentivize me to frequent this establishment as it indicates the owners run the restaurant as a business and not a hobby, unlike so many of the other restaurants in the area who only seem to be open when they feel like it. I admit that some of the menu items aren't great (curry chicken) but the menu is... extensive and their base items (Lo Mein, Fried Rice, etc...) are solid.

    (4)
  • Larry S.

Pretty decent food. I had the Kung Po Chicken. Don't bother asking for it extra spicy. I told them to make it as spicy as they possibly could and when it came there wasn't even a hint of heat. But it tasted good and its open late.

Having this place deliver was great. The food was still so hot when it arrived it was difficult to pick up the egg rolls. We ordered lo mein, a small order of vegetable for me and a large order of beef for the hungry teen. All very tasty. The prices are very reasonable. We will definitely order again.

Not the best Chinese food and the services has not always been friendly. Only reason it's two stars is because it's cheep

I'm done with this place they're just too in consistent. The first time I ate here the food was cheap and pretty good . Second time was pretty bad , third time was very good and now the last two times were borderline inedible . In fact today I threw mine out after only a few bites of sczechuan beef and chicken. I love the was there menu is being able to order small portions is awesome because usually my girlfriend and I can't make up our minds or agree on what to order . With the small cheap a la carte style menu it's easy to get something everyone wants with out breaking the bank or having way too much food I'm not sure if I'll go back as of right now I'd say no but maybe one day I'll give them another try

We've ordered from here 3 times times now after a recommendation from a neighbor. The first time was perfect! Pretty good Chinese food and everything we ordered within a decent amount of time. However, these 2nd & 3rd times we've ordered have not been so great. The second time the food just wasn't as good and the orange chicken had just WAY too much sauce on everything, plus it took forever for them to get there. Also, it's hard in general to order sometimes, they say everything so fast and you try to clarify and you're practically yelling your order into the phone to make sure it's right. This last time we ordered around 10pm after yelling our order and repeating it twice and it took almost an hour and a half for the food to arrive after they had originally told us about 35-45 minutes. On top of that they messed up writing down my CC number, which is why it probably took longer than usual. Once the food FINALLY arrived it was almost 11:30 and I didn't even want to eat by then. I hurried up and paid and then took out the food to eat after he left and surprise, NOT what I ordered. By then I was just like F it... I'm not meant to eat. My bf called and they said they would refund my wrong order, which they did. But after yelling our orders at the phone, messing up the order anyways and waiting an hour and a half... I'm not sure I will be ordering from here again. Time to find a new Chinese place.

Gen. Joes chicken is the best I have had. Great sweet and sour and seamen chicken too! Great for delivery, they were very fast and food was piping hot.

Terrible food. Terrible service. It took an awful long time for them to even take my order. The food arrived much later than estimated and was cold. They also charged me for more than I ordered...roughly $22 more. Once I realized this, I called them back only to get screamed at. I was then hung up on.

Think of the worst chinese food place you've ever eaten at. The kind of place that puts up shop next to a cat clinic, or a kill shelter. Gross right? Well Great Wall is an insult to even the worst chinese place. The seasame chicken was all flower, the fried rice had giant chunks of red things (beets?) and was way overcooked. Yes I said even the RICE at a Chinese food place was horrible. I ordered the chicken lo mein also. The noodles were rubbery and flavorless, and the 'chicken' didn't much resemble any chicken parts i've ever seen. It didn't even taste like chicken with all the fat still stuck to it. Nasty crap. Don't waste your time.

I've eaten here quite a few times. Sometimes it's great for take out Chinese, and sometimes...? Not so much. Especially in the last few months. I continued giving them a chance until I got food poisoning twice in a row. It was a mistake to give them another chance after the first time geting sick. I won't be ordering food from this place again.

Don't even bother, seriously. My girlfriend and I were visiting Denver and thought we'd try some regional Chinese food. Bad idea. My General Tso's chicken was tough, flavorless and stringy. Her pork, chicken, and beef in garlic sauce was mediocre at best. THe sesame noodles sounded great, but wound up being decent lo mein noodles with a huge glob of super thick whatever on top (tasted like peanut butter) and it was impossible to mix. I had five bites and into the trash it all went. Super disappointing! We won't be making that poor choice again next year.

Horrible. We had ordered our food for delivery the food did not come until an hour later, which was understandable because they were busy. What really pissed me off was they had our party's our order messed up. As we called back they were insistent and arrogant that they had got it right. I had ordered here before and I know what dishes I order. Very upset about this situation because there was middle ground. Never order from this place. Trust me have been to a lot of Chinese restaurants, raised in Hawaii and I go to SF a lot. Very poor, and if I could I would give this place a 0 star rating.

Made a delivery order and it did not show up for TWO hours!! The food was cold and taste horrible. Do not order any type of noodle from this place!! Also the fried rice was mushy and tasteless. The person who took my order and delivered my food was rude and acted like I was inconveniencing them. I would never want to eat here again and I do not recommend eating at this place!!

As you know, modest surrounding can make for a magnificent meal. That's what you'll get at Great Wall. My partner in crime and I did Saturday lunch here. We ordered dumplings, boneless ribs, sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, and shrimp lo mein.. and we seriously Om Nom Nommed! Great Wall has the hole-in-the-wall vibe down pat.. and I would not want it any other way. The convo as they cook in the kitchen for example.. although its inaudible, it's somehow comforting. The personalities of some of the staff are minimal at its finest, and others were great. Got a little sweet n' sour on my hubs shirt, and they were very helpful when I nearly had a fit about it. They're on Colfax, so there is no shortage of entertainment if you're sitting by the window as you eat. Whether its to go, or dine in.. I'm totally doing Great Wall for Chinese.

I read good reviews about this place but haven't been that impressed. The food I've gotten the last couple of times, chicken dishes, have been mostly batter that is kind of dried out tasting with uninspired sauce. Granted it was very inexpensive so I guess you get what you pay for, but I don't understand all the good food reviews. Maybe I've just ordered on bad nights or something, but don't plan on doing it again. Also the inside of this place is pretty nasty so I would never dine in.

I just had a horrible experience at this place. I phoned in an order for take out earlier this evening for a Pu Pu Platter, #117 Chicken with Cashews for me and #121 Sweet and Sour Chicken for my friend. The lady on the other end asked small or large. I didn't see small or large on the menu, but I thought, okay we both want large orders, so I said as much. I was viewing the menu on their website to confirm the numbers and description of the item and these were under the headings of "Combo Specials" and under that line is "Served w. Pork Fried Rice & pork Egg Roll". I clearly stated what I wanted on the phone and the lady on the other end repeated my order back to me so I thought we were good to go. My friend and I head out the door to go pick the order up, pay for the food, and we walk back home. I check the food after walking into my home and my order (#117) is not in the bag. I was so frustrated at myself for not checking everything before I left the place, but even more upset they left out an entire entree. How is it possible to forget an entree? My thinking is that I phoned in the order... someone must have written down the order, right? It's all on the same slip... I call the restaurant back up and tell them I'm missing an entire entree and the sides that come with it (pork fried rice and an egg roll). The lady on the other end said I didn't order #117 and that she only charged me for the appetizer and #121. I tell her over and over that I didn't make the mistake here (of forgetting to order my own dinner???) Ridiculous! Indeed the total of ~$18 could not have covered the two entrees and the appetizer, but when I'm paying for takeout at the counter, I don't much pay attention to the total and if the total adds up. I expected a fulfilled order. So she says she'll put the order in for #117 and I ask that it be delivered. It shows up in a very reasonable 10 minutes and I think everything is well. But we start opening the rice boxes and see that we both have white rice and we don't even have the pork egg roll. It clearly states under the combo specials that they are served with pork fried rice and a pork egg roll. Before I even start eating my meal, I, again, call the restaurant telling the same lady that I was served white rice with my meal, not pork fried rice... as well as no egg roll. She said that since I ordered the "large", not the "small", then it is served with white rice. And apparently no egg roll with that. What difference should it make whether I order a large or a small? Why does that determine whether one gets pork fried rice or not? And the egg roll.... I don't get it! I counter the lady with what the menu says... clear as day on there... and she just repeats herself over and over. I hang up after politely but frustratingly saying "thank you" and I have just had it. I'm done telling these folks that they gave me an incorrect order. Though it may sound petty with the fried rice vs. white rice, I specifically and clearly ordered what I had wanted and it ended up like a McDonald's order. The Pu Pu Platter was actually very good but the entrees themselves were very bland. I ate about a fourth of my entree and was done. I have my leftovers in my refrigerator right now, but I think I may just throw it away. But I will not be visiting this place again and will stick with the other Chinese restaurant nearby, Lucky Fortune. It was a horrible experience having been told I was wrong twice... one that I forgot to order my own dinner and two not knowing the changes in the sides when you order a large. The menu is incorrect. The service was rude and intolerable. I don't always believe the customer is right, but this time... I was.

Love the great wall. One of the best of its class. Cheap Chinese done the right way. A lot of their food is from scratch. Top 3 Chinese restaurant (fine dining excluded) in the metro area. This place is always packed. I recommend calling in an order and picking it up yourself. Plus it's always a fun adventure on Colfax and Pennsylvania. Crazy's everywhere. Anyway, good food, good prices. I highly recommend.

After the driver was more than 30 minutes late, the meal did not have everything included as listed on the combo package. Calling back, I asked to not be fully charged for the meal. The workers argued with me saying that "they have been working for over 10 years and don't make mistakes". I then asked for the managers number. They said they would not give it to me and that they "had to get back to work" and hung up on me. WORST food and WORST customer service experience I have ever had.

Just what I was looking for - some filling, inexpensive Chinese delivery. I got the Orange Chicken combo with pork fried rice and pork egg roll. The orange chicken was pretty good, tasted similar to Panda Express's. I liked the spice in the chicken. The rice was kind of disappointing, very bland. As for the egg roll, I usually never take more than one bite but I devoured this whole thing. Probably my favorite part of the meal. Also had crab cheese wontons which contained way too much white onion. The hot and sour soup was very filling but still seemingly light. I loved the tofu and mushrooms in it. Delivery was speedy, cost me $20 with tip, and I had plenty leftover. Successful Chinese dive for me!

Great Wall is the average and typical Chinese food we American's crave. The food is bland and lacks flavor but you can spice it up with Siracha or additional soy and it's not so bad. The steamed dumplings are pretty good. There are 8 in an order and lasted me 3 lunches at work! That's the thing about Great Wall. They deliver late at night and to where I work, and I work nights. So for that alone, I will devour some bland Chinese food and every minute love it!

Don't waste your time or MONEY!! The sesame chicken was disgusting...the chicken was small, greasy and not worth eating. Seriously don't waste your $$$. A great alternative is Wokano Asian Bistro (303) 831-8277 Capitol Hill 1078 Ogden St Denver, CO 80218

The order came on time, hot and accurate. I found the prices to be reasonable and overall it was very good food. I got the steamed veggie and chicken combo. That wasn't enough for the delivery minimum of $10, so I added pork lo mein. Overall, the flavors were nicely balanced. The chicken was not too fatty, which is usually the first sign of poor quality ingredients. The vegetables were fresh, the rice was cooked just right and the egg roll was delicious. Just the right amount of crunch. I also thought the pork lo mein was as addictive as that dish usually is to me. Again, good quality meat. All in all, I thought it was good! Didn't blow me out of the water, but I'll certainly order from here again.

Wow I can't tell you how many times I asked myself, "you don't really want Chinese food that bad do you?" But yet again, with hopes that we find that diamond in the rough we fore sake our inner monologue and hell even the look from the gf as if to say, "are you sure you're REALLY craving Chinese?" All that aside we get out of the car and into the door. We order from the billboard sized menu (while skillfully watching my back), Mongolian beef, Vegetable Lo Mein, House special fried rice, Orange chicken (as a backup...noone can mess up orange chicken), Spare Ribs, and egg drop soup. Now mind you I was born and raised in Compton and Gardena (Los Angeles) and the gf went to school in New York so we're not strangers to this type of environment, however, it's just a raggedy and grimey area. This homeless guy is inside fumbling at his zipper for like 5 minutes, some nervous crackhead went by the window with some dry cleaning in his hand about 100 times. Then two guys decide to have a conversation that the whole restaurant can hear for the 10 minutes we wait for our take out. At this point I'm thinking, "Damn this has got to be good!" I've posted a picture of what they call Mongolian beef, it was 95% onions, beef was diced into something the size of bean sprouts and it was tasteless. So tasteless it's almost a feat how they managed to create such a tasteless dish with so many onions. Vegetable lo mein was ok, but once again very subtle in flavors. Fried rice was dry, spare ribs were dry and lacked the intense taste that made me love Chinese pork so much from that first bite as a kid. Incredibly my worst fears came true, the first Chinese place that did mess up Orange chicken...wow...it was hard, and the orange peel flavor took off in my mouth and I honestly felt like I was eating a tough breaded piece of Orange jerky. So we say fine, give it overnight and maybe Jesus will come down since it's a Saturday night and bless our Chinese food and we'll rejoice on Sunday morning. Just like that last sentence probably did to you...it just left a bad taste in our mouths. They should put a Great Wall up in front of the door. p.s. I paid $40 for all that too.

So I moved just a few blocks east of my old address. Not out of their delivery area and now it completely depends on who answers the phone if they will deliver to me. Whomever the woman is that answers most of the time is so miserable, no longer worth the effort.

They have some great crab cheese wontons and their kung poa chicken was great and their portions are huge. Would order from there again.

Staying in downtown Denver tonight, we decided to order Chinese food. They delivered straight to the room which was nice. Unfortunately, my wife and I agree that the food was pretty terrible. The chicken lo mein was probably the worst we've ever had. The General Tso chicken was mostly fried breading with some chicken tendon mixed in. Price was good and delivery was fast but the food simply wasn't very good.

If you want Chinese delivery that is quick, fast and easy this is the place. The food tastes good and you get a nice portion with each order. Like most places they have a variety of affordable specials as well. TL;DR: Typical Chinese takeout that won't disappoint with the right expectations.

This review is for DELIVERY: Pros: -Good prices, with combos ranging around $7-$12. -Portions are very large and enough for 2 meals/people. -Very extensive menu (can be found on their website). -Spicy is SPICY. -Delivery is free within 3 miles. I recommend the "shrimp & scallop" (comes with veggies and white rice, and is spicy). The "sesame chicken" is also very good (slightly spicy, not too battered). Cons: -Delivery takes FOREVER. Even if I order for 2 people, and even though I live no more than 5 blocks away, it's taken them almost 50 minutes to deliver to me every time I order. Just keep this in mind and order early, I guess. -I've yet to get any utensils from them -- chopsticks or otherwise. Side note: they take both credit card or cash orders over the phone.

The lunch specials are pretty good. For 4.95 get Rib Tips in a Sweet Hoisin type sauce, with either fried rice or french fries. I opted for french fries which were the standard frozen variety. The Rib tips though were plenty. Ive paid more at other places and recieved less. The drinks though im not a fan of. If you get a Small you dont get a refill. If you get a Medium you get 1. And if you buy a Large drink it comes with unlimited refills. Soda cant be that expensive. This place has limited seating, a vast menu and is always busy. And they are friendly.

If you enjoy your Chinese dirty and cheap, egg rolls fried to a crisp like KFC's chicken, and plates filled with more meat than rice, this is your place. Aside from the prime location for a late night bite of greasy goodness, the food quality ain't too bad either. Coming from California and having traveled to NYC several times a year, I can attest to the East-coast style of the food prep. You know, slightly greasier, yellow rice, and a less sodium than you would expect. Kinda perfect for me, actually. So if you're hunting around for a decent Chinese joint with fast-food that's surprisingly more legit than you would expect, check this place out. PS: I recommend getting take-out as the place is kind if dumpy with missing back padding on the seats and dirty floors, but it's Colfax, so you can't expect too much.

  • Jared M.

First off, the employees can be incredibly rude, but you have to understand that with their location on East Colfax, they probably put up with a bunch of bullish*t from a rather unsavory crowd. That being said, their food is consistently good, their prices are unbeatable, and delivery is usually rather quick. When I'm looking for some quick New York style Chinese food, this is my go-to restaurant.

This is my favorite American Asian take out place in Denver. I love this place. It's on Colfax so the service can be a little off putting but hey they deal with all the trash that comes in off Colfax. I don't blame then for not being the most friendly. The have the best and most authentic poo poo app platters. I don't know of a better or more authentic one in all of the Denver Metro area. The have a huge list of dishes and options. Very large portions and cheap! I've been to Chinese take out places all over the world and the US. This place is like if you took them all and jammed them together. Weird but true for me. I heart their curry dishes! Huge chunks of veggies and tasty sauce. I also enjoy watching the dozen or so crack deals that go down while waiting for my take out food. No need for a magazine or television. Just look out the window.

I've never even stepped foot in this place to be honest, but have ordered delivery loyally for the past 2 years. Without a doubt this place is the biggest bang for your buck in the city! Huge portion sizes that usually last me 1-2 meals beyond my initial order. Delivery isn't the fastest, but it's well worth the wait! Haven't had a single thing that was anything less than delicious. And the crab cheese wontons are to die for!

I've been on a mission for good Chinese delivery / takeout in Denver since moving here from the east coast. I will apply the same criteria I did back east since it's been effective; I haven't reviewed Chinese here for a month just to be sure. - does the hot and sour smell like sweatsocks (and if not, how is it?) - what does the chicken chow mein feel and taste like - is the general tso's gummy - how greasy is your noodle This place has good hot and sour. For me, this is a non-negotiable. If the hot and sour is bad, your whole menu probably sucks. That said, the first place to have a white pepper + lily buds situation will probably rate better. The chicken chow mein is fresh tasting and not overwhelmed by sodium or starch... but they lose points (like so many) on the grease scale. The Gen Tso is also within acceptable parameters.

I live very close to this chinese place and it's my #1 choice when ordering out for chinese! I usually order the same thing every time - the vegetable fried rice and the vegetable egg rolls, (sometimes I'll dabble with other appetizers) and they never let me down. Great Wall uses 100% vegetable oil to make their dishes, so even though I eat their fried food, everything is surprisingly light. The portions are generous and overall I just really enjoy the quality of their stuff! My boyfriend usually gets the tofu in garlic sauce or the broccoli in garlic sauce and they always have a nice ratio of different vegetables to go along with the main item in the dish. I'll definitely continue to order take-out from this place for as long as I live nearby! One thing I can say is I'd recommend ordering out more than I would recommend eating in. Nothing wrong with the place, it just doesn't really have any atmosphere and is right on Colfax so the view directly out the window can sometimes get a little strange. I find Great Wall's food to be more enjoyable from the comfort of my own home, anyway!

Real authentic NY style Chinese food I grew up with. Last night we had the sesame chicken and beef with broccoli. Both fantastic, but the sesame chicken stood out. Fried to perfection, excellent tasty sauce. Aside from the drunks that like the frequent the Great Wall after a show it was quite enjoyable.

This would get 4 stars but it is not New York style like it claims to be. lived in NYC and Honolulu, what I can say its a clash between east and west coast American Chinese food. Which is cool with me cause this is Denver

The 4-stars is for the food only, not the dine-in experience as I got delivery in my hotel room (nearby in the shady area of E. Colfax on a lazy night on a work trip.) Judging by the other reviews it sounds like it's not a great dine-in experience ;) Since there's a min order for free delivery I got chicken rice soup pint $2.50 and roast pork with snow peas and rice $7. That was enough for 2 meals to be honest. And for a price some restaurants would charge double for if you sat down. The food is classic Cantonese take-out food with a great selection considering it's a take-out and delivery joint - it even has a healthy menu section. I enjoyed this food and it's a much better option than the pizza, Taco Bell etc. choices nearby. I could eat this a few nights of the week!

I lived in NYC for 14 years. This place is just like the Chinese take places all over NYC so if you like NYC chinese you'll love this place. No ambience and the neighborhood seems a little sketchy but food is fast, good and cheap. I missed NYC "Cold Sesame Noodles" and searched all over the Denver area...this is the only place I've found that makes them NYC style, spaghetti type noodles with a thick spicy peanutty sauce...mmmm...Highly recommend their Cold Sesame Noodles, around $4 for an "appetizer" that is big enough to be an entree. I live in Boulder and visit Great Wall whenever I'm down Denver way.

I've been meaning to try Great Wall for some time because people keep telling me it's the only Chinese joint in town that I'll find those big, crusty, NY-style shrimp egg rolls that I crave so dearly. Despite the shady location, I finally said, "What the wok." and did so. We got delivery, and it was lightning fast to Cheeseman Park neighborhood. We had Lo Mein, Chow Mein, and friend rice, all of the shrimp variety. (Call me old fashioned, but I need my meat identifiable from an inner-city Chinese restaurant) They were all as good as any other I've had in the Mile High. But the egg rolls were superior. None of that skinny, tasteless, rice-paper crap people try to pass off as egg rolls. Big, fat, egg-coated, and filled with yum. FINALLY.

My stomach was kicking my ass (if that were possible, who would win? My stomach does have a knockout appetite, but then again, my juicy behind may put up a good fight. I think I'd give it to my stomach though. We'll see). Anyways, my hunger pains were pounding inside my chest, and they were calling out for some nearby Chinese food. Cheap nearby Chinese food. So I signed onto the trusted Yelp and looked up non-expensive Chinese food near me, and found Great Wall. Decent prices that didn't make me want to jump out the window. Some of these places kill me with their prices. Ordered for pickup (yah right. Free delivery. I'm not paying you a two dollar tip to do something I can do myself). It was ready when I got there, and still piping hot. Excellent. Lunch specials are usually what I do, and I ordered the sesame chicken (my favorite). Came with pork fried rice and a choice of soup or egg roll (I opted for the egg roll). Decent flavor, not too fried. Not as good when it was reheated (the true test of good restaurant food). As for the inside décor... there is none, unless you call Colfax grunge a décor. No thrills, which is no matter to me because I come for the food, not for the dingy booths in the corner. Not my favorite, but I'd try it again since there's a big menu, it's close to me, and did I mention that the prices are low? And I was hungry again an hour later, but luckily I had plenty of leftovers for later. Perfect.

Still on our hunt for the best chinese delivery near Capitol Hill, we stumbled on this fine hole in the wall. Delivery was quick 30-40 min. The food was just alright. Not good, not bad. Totally edible if you're really hungry. Definitely not enough to make us stop our search of something better though. Veggie Eggrolls were the only thing I would be going back for!

Christmas Day! Not much to eat right? Well I would suggest not eating here. Hot and Sour Soup tasted horrible. Who knows what type of meat was in my General Tsos. Definitely not the white meat that I requested. Lo Mein garbage! I'll continue to look for something good in the neighborhood. Maybe JJ's next no pun intended.

Hello new favorite lunch spot. I've eaten here a couple times now, and both instances have been great. The boneless spare ribs are deeeeelicious, and the steamed dumplings I had today were great. I'm not quite sure why the owners are so militant about the soda consumption rules as indicated by their very large, angry-looking signs on the dispenser (NO FREE REFILLS! YOU PAY FIRST!!), but whatever. The majority of their midday specials involve a main dish with a choice of egg roll, soup, or soda for less than five dollars. If I lived closer, I think I'd probably wind up getting carry out or delivery more times than I'd wind up admitting. Not that I can blame this on them in the slightest, but it'd be even cooler if I could walk there without having to maneuver large swatches of completely destroyed sidewalk. For the record, when you see someone faceplant on the sidewalk due to huge chunks of missing concrete, lying there with an ankle at an awkward angle, for the love of GOD, folks, ask if she's OK. She will be if you just ask. Otherwise, she'll just be all bitter about angry until she has a face full of Chinese food. One more thing - the first fortune I got at Great Wall? "Life is not a struggle. It's a wiggle." In bed.

Okay, so I moved across the street from this place, and my boyfriend loves him some late-night chinese. And really, I wasn't going to turn it down if he was buying. I've come to realize that their Egg Foo Young is some of the best in town (I get the combo special). It's like east-coast Egg Foo, which is totally different than what places out here serve. I don't know if they were having an off-day last time I tried, but I now approve. The rest of it? I'd say it's average. But now that I've eaten it more and more, I don't know if I've acquired the taste for bad chinese or if it has actually improved in quality over the past couple years. But I have gone up two stars, and that's kind of unusual for me. But if you have a choice, just get takeout. The clientele can be sketchy at best, and the health department sign on the door saying they failed due to not washing their hands kind of grossed me out. And all the staff seems to be family or close friends - I feel like two or three of them are always eating some sort of crab and white rice bowl at one of the booths, and chatting rather than working. I think it's just better to see the delivery guy and not the behind-the-scenes.

When you drive by Great Wall it doesn't seem like much but I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered from here tonight. I found that the other reviews are right when they say that it takes a while for the delivery, but I've noticed that most places around here take almost 45 minutes anyway. I've been trying to find a good Chinese place in Denver since I moved here from NYC but I haven't had much luck until now. My egg roll was crispy, the fried rice was flavorful but not too salty, and the sesame tofu was really good. Portion size was awesome... A lot of places give you a ton of rice and skimp on the rest but that was not the case here. This place will probably be my go-to Chinese for takeout.

I really, really, really like getting Chinese food delivered to my apartment. No, I don't want to eat it in a restaurant. I want to eat it on my bed, or on my couch, or even on the floor of my living room. There's just something really comforting about eating Chinese at home. For the money, this place is stellar. They deliver (pretty darn quick, might I add), they're close to my home, and the food is consistently good. I'm a lo-mein kind of girl while the boyfriend prefers to branch out in his selections. The lunch combos are a good deal if you catch it around that time. I would be a liar if I said that the crab cheese wontons weren't my favorite thing they have. My only complaint? Well, that would be that I hate calling my order in. The same lady always answers the phone and she's hella rude. Like, way abrupt. She has hung up on me without giving me a total before, and once almost hung up before I could even give her my credit card number! Instead of letting that affect my decision as to whether or not I should eat there, the boyfriend and I just flip a coin to decide who gets to get yelled at by the takeout phone answerer.

Don't let the exterior fool you, this place is pretty good. It's not the best Chinese food I've ever had, but for the price it certainly is. And their fried chicken is bomb, especially with the homemade hot sauce. Get the boneless ribs, the meat sticks, anything fried, wontons, it's all good. And around $5-8 bucks it cannot be beat.

Ordered Great Wall Chinese restaurant last night in our quest to try all the Chinese restaurants in the area and find the best! This, unfortunately, does not find its way to the top. We ordered their Kung Pao tofu; the staff was courteous over the phone. The food showed up within the hour, as promised. The food was VERY spicey! I like spice, alot, but this was a bit much for even my taste. Still, the portion was large and the tofu was very tastey. Everything appeared to be pretty good, not the best in town (we have a local favorite we've sort of established, so all of these others are "contenders"). The big issue was large on in the evening -- my stomach rumbled and rocked and became very ill. I found myself unable to sleep with stomach problems -- unfortunate to say, I had a long night. -- Turns out, after I ate some tums and fell asleep, that my roommate, who order Curried Chicken with (a ton) of Onions, very spicey, also rocked his stomach. My girlfriend, who shared my meal, was fine, but said that she didn't feel great and didn't think it was the best food. Overall it was a mediocre experience - there are better Asian food options in the area.

Being a foodie, there are places that define a city from your past. This is one of the restaurants for me. During college, I frequently called in orders after class or on long weekends. Great food at a great price. Doesn't get any better for Chinese take out. And free delivery is a deal maker for some folks. Miss you, Great Wall! Denverites, call them up and enjoy a good meal for me.

Closest take out joint to my home. Food is lackluster, at best. Most dishes I have tried have almost no meat. If you want a snack, though, it's OK. However, the Crab wontons, BBQ ribs and house special soup are pretty good. Fried rice is very bland. Service is quick and food makes it home piping hot, even when it's below freezing outside. Still, wish I had someplace better to go.

I've recently had a falling out with my go-to restaurant for delivery. So, on a cold, dark, and stormy winter night when I'd normally get dinner delivered to my doorstep, I decided to venture out to Great Wall. Now, if you're like most people who drive by this corner (bordered by Cathedral Basilica, McDonald's, the Rosyln Grill, and Great Wall) you will understand my hesitation about wanting to eat there. It just screams: sketchy! The menu is also a little bit overwhelming, but at least there are tons of options. Oh, and if you want to take home a pair of "nice" chopsticks - not the prepackaged kind - you can pick up a pair here for the bargain price of 99 cents. I settled on a small mongolian beef, hot and sour soup, and a drink, which rang up around $9. Not too bad, since I always have leftovers. However, they really should call that dish mongolian onions, because it ended up being mostly onion. Also, a day later, I'm still drinking water like mad, so methinks they overdo it on the sodium. I think I'll try a few more places before I settle on another takeout joint. Note: Since it was like 12 degrees the night I stopped in, I can understand how they needed to turn on space heaters to keep the dining room warm. However, taping a space heater to a cardboard box to get it to the right height is probably not the best idea. ;)

I wish I could write less than a 1 star. They literally just hung up on me because I "live too far away". they could not be more wrong. their website says that if you live within three miles of downtown they will deliver... I guess their website LIES.

My roommate and I are both big guys but I can honestly tell you I can't finish an.entire lunch special here in one meal. Get the boneless ribs or lo mein and you won't regret it. I also love their sweet and sour chicken. Roommate gets shrimp alot and I am allergic and I never have to worry about cross contamination either. Best place near the capital for chinese.

We call just for the egg rolls and spare ribs all the time. Perfectly decadent New York style Chinese food. A stoner's paradise as it were. Don't know that I would ever actually sit down and eat in there as it is not really up to par in terms of cleanliness, but for delivery and carry out... PERFECT.

My husband and I were dying for some greasy Chinese food late one night after a run...yes I know :) and this was the only place that we could find that was still open at 10:30 pm! We called ahead and ordered a ton of food and drove on down. We didn't wait very long maybe 5 or 10 minutes at the very most. Definitely call ahead to save time. Their menu is available online to plan ahead. The place seemed like a mess. It is weird to walk in to a place and see the kitchen working right before your eyes. You almost wonder if it is a blessing you don't see kitchens more often in restaurants. There were two children running around the kitchen, under and around the workers playing which didn't seem too sanitary to me. No one was really wearing hairnets or gloves--I'm not sure with health regulations if they are supposed to but it seemed like a dirty environment. The phone was ringing and people seemed to be stressed out. Anyway, the man at the counter was surprisingly nice to us, especially coming 10 minutes in before they closed. Their crab wontons were a great deal - like 8 for $4.25 and they were delicious! When we got our bag, it felt like a few pounds of food. You get a pint of soup for under two bucks. And they also give you a little bag of those crunchy won ton things (I have no idea what they are or what they're called) to eat with your soup. We ordered the sesame chicken. Very good and crunchy. We also got the mongolian beef which didn't seem to come with a lot of beef so we probably won't get it again. Also, it was a tad bit spicy--and I'm a baby with that so it wasn't my favorite. I appreciated how they stapled the bags of our food closed and placed cardboard in between our food items so they didn't tilt and spill everywhere for the drive home. We were generally satisfied with all of our food and had plenty to eat leftovers for two other meals. Will definitely order from here again, but not something I would do often just because of the questionable sanitation and I'm sure this can't be very good for your body on a daily basis... but it was exactly what we were looking for!

I will come back and edit this review upon trying something more than a pork egg roll. So yes, the egg roll is closer to the style you see in NYC, but it's still not quite exact. The wrap is the right texture, but overall, still smaller. Regardless, it was yummy. Definitely can't beat the prices... we were there during lunch hours, and pretty much all the combos were between $5 and $6. As far as decor goes. I had no problems sitting down and eating inside. This is as divey as you get (ripped booth cushions, take-out hot and sour soup containers used to hold the soy and duck sauce), but if you're looking for that NY experience, then isn't divey really what you want? I used to live around the corner from a Chinese place in Brooklyn where you ordered through bullet proof glass, so this place ain't no thang.

"So a homeless man, a pimp, a drugged out woman and a loud group of black people walk into a chinese food restaurant..." That sounds like a beginning of a horrible joke, but that's what happened when we came here, which I'm still on the fence on the entertainment level. The homeless guy doing something near his crotch area in our direction was definitely not entertaining. The place got pretty crowded so we thought this place could be a little suspect but delicious. Typical lackluster Chinese food but I gave this place an extra star for the strange setting (some parts of Colfax are just caarraazy) and the fact that I didn't feel disgustingly greasy afterward.

Alright, walking through or even past two gangs of people that are screaming at each other and threatening to throw punches freaks me out. Feel the same way? Then screw dine-in and take-out: DELIVERY ONLY. I have only ever been here after dark, but every time I've gone it is the same surrounding, and like I said... it really freaks me out. That being said, I dont know how it is during the day but I'm willing to bet it's better. Now, some of the food is pretty good. I can recommend the fried rice (it's nice a fluffly), the lo-mein, the crab-cheese wontons. Egg rolls, veggie entrees :) I've never had a problem with any of these things. I would stay away from battered/fried meats. Sesame chicken, sweet and sour pork, they've all disappointed me. The orange chicken was down-right aweful, I could hardly find any chicken! It was chewy and tough, and the sauce was so strong. And I am NOT a picky eater... Lunch comes with an entree, rice, soup, and a fortune cookie, and it's all around 5 bucks. For the price, the amount of food given, the tastiness of *most* of the food, and the free delivery, I would still say Great Wall is A-OK. So give it a try, but DELIVERY ONLY at night!

I had to visit the Great Wall after reading the Yelps in cheap eats. It is located on the southwest corner of Colfax and Pennsylvania, in a fairly grubby area just a couple of blocks east of the capital. The signs are red on white, and while they are not hand lettered, they don't look very professional. Once inside, the place both lived up and down to my expectations. It was cleaner and less rundown than I had expected from previous posts, so I decided to eat there, rather than doing takeout. The kitchen was visible from the counter, and also looked reasonably clean. As a result, I decided to take a chance and get the pork egg foo yung lunch. Sat down at one of the booths (which must have been replaced, because they were in good shape, although pretty ugly) and proceeded to listen to the Chinese going on in the kitchen. You can't get egg foo yung just anywhere, and often when it is on the menu, it is covered with peas and carrots. I had hopes that this would not be the case, and my hopes were justified. Let me give you some background on my passion for egg foo yung. Durng World War II my father was stationed in Canton province, somehow while he was there he became addicted to the local food (must have been better than army chow). When he returned home to Oklahoma City he found a truck stop 40 miles from our home that was run by a family that had come from the area he had been stationed in. Don't ask me how he managed to track down this place - you would have to have known my father, who never met a stranger. Anyway, we would make the forty mike trip (one way) at least once a month. We always had the pork egg foo yung, and he said it was just like what he had gotten in China. Now that I am older, I am surprised, because I thought that egg foo yung was something that was created here in the US? Anyway, the egg foo yung at Great Wall is the closest thing that I have found to the egg foo yung at that long ago truck stop. The eggs are light and fluffy, enfolding chunks of bbq pork, bean sprouts and onions. The sauce is thick and brown, and very savory. If my dad were still around, I would definitely take him for a quick lunch! I plan on going back, and if I can force myself to skip the egg foo yung, I am going to try the crab wontons and the hot and sour soup.

This is definitely fast food, but there's the comfort food quality of everything I get at Great Wall. As long as you take being on Colfax into account (and the craziness that implies), I can't see how you can go wrong here. Give me Great Wall's food any day over any other pricier Chinese food joints.

This is my favorite Chinese place that delivers....and they deliver far!! Located on Colfax, they deliver to me in the Highlands...love that! I agree, this reminds me of NY Chinese food. I have not been able to find cold sesame noodles anywhere else. They have lots of spicy peanut butter in them...mmmmm.........peanut butter......spicy......... It is very cheap! They serve combos all day/night for around 5 or 6 dollars and they easily serve 2. I also get to be super picky here and order exactly what I want and they make it each time!! Steamed shrimp and veggies, white sauce spicy on the side. There eggdrop/wonton soup is soo good, best of both worlds. Open and deliver pretty late too! And, I have a secret crush on the delivery man...okay so he may be around 70, but so cute and always remembers my name!

I found myself up in Sheri's office again a few weeks ago. I didn't plan going there... or I did... I don't recall which once it was at this moment, but either way, I needed to have dinner and so that meant finding some place that delivered. Having done the sandwich thing at two different places, went for Chinese this time. I had heard word of Great Wall before. You get a lot of food for little money and they had a large menu. Good, figure they had to have something that would interest me. So I went to their website to look at their menu and for some reason I couldn't access it. I am on a MacBook Pro using Firefox and it just wouldn't work for me. I had my girlfriend try on her work computer (Dell using Internet Explorer) and it worked. Dumb... I looked over the menu for a few minutes and ordered three different items: Hot & Sour Soup Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and Roast Pork Mei Fun. *lame ass joke coming up in 3... 2... 1...* More like Mei Not So Fun. *lowers head in shame* I won't make excuses for that, instead I will move on with my review. After a number of others in the office had their orders ready we called them up. In about 30 minutes we had our food to us and I was starving so I got right to it. I started with the soup. Typical hot & sour that I've had at countless other places, so there is not much to write about there. Next was the shrimp and lobster sauce. I ordered a pint just to try it, even though I have had it before at a few places. I wish I would have tried something else, because there had to be maybe pieces of shrimp and the rest was sauce. Certainly not enough shrimp, not at all. Double that would might have been acceptable, but what was I going to do with all that sauce and four pieces? Finally I tried the Roast Pork Mei Fun. I wanted something different this sounded good. I should have realized that it would have come full of veggies, but my mind wasn't working. So when I opened it, I was a little bummed. I don't eat a lot of veggies (but I am making progress) so this wasn't something I was completely looking forward to. I did however manage to get half of my order down. The noodles were super thin, similar to angel hair pasta and I was expecting something more like ribbon and the roast pork turned out to be nothing more than bbq pork sliced and tossed in with everything else. I blame myself for trying something out of my normal cheap Chinese orders. I would have had better things to say had I.

It's not bad. The lunch specials are decent. Most of the people that work there aren't too friendly. I asked for a cup for water to sip while I waited on my order. I got told twice after pouring water not to steal soda. I felt embarrassed and insulted.

Not at all classy and the food is, in fact, greasy, but it tastes great, the service is quick and friendly, and the price is right! I've been looking for a good Chinese for take-out and delivery in my Capital Hill neighborhood and this is it! Surprisingly varied menu as well. I had vegetable egg rolls and shrimp with shredded pork. All was perfect and large enough that there are left-overs. This will become a regular for me.

Just your garden variety Chinese "restaurant." Take-out or delivery are your best bets. It's located on one of the seediest corners Colfax has to offer.

Okay so I'm a big fan of chinese cuisine and picky. I went out today to order the sesame chicken. I drove up colfax and saw two chinese resteraunts to my left, right before hitting Pennsylvania. I don't remember the name of the other one but I saw Great Wall right on the corner. I parked in the back of the place, a lot where it had warning signs splattered all over the place about it being parking for some dry cleaners or the other. I headed into GW and placed my order with a little man. Apparently you can order either a lunch order which comes in a small tinfoil dish or regular, a larger portion. I went with the lunch order. You can buy fancy chopsticks for 99 cents too. I had a set at a small table and had a gander of the place. It's not the neatest place; two booths had torn up seats from I don't know what. The table next to me was a mess, as if I child had finished eating. The food is cheap here for I only paid $5 something for my meal. As I sit here eating my sesame chicken, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Seriously. Maybe it's because it took them a good 10 to 15 minutes to cook it. A group of guys entered, placed their orders and one raved about how he now had $8 left till monday. Woo hoo! All in all, this place isn't that bad especially if you're on a small budget, scrounging for change so you can eat and want some fancy chopsticks.

My second order from great wall was actually quite delicious-- give the General Tso's a shot-- yum!!

Just got done eating some Great Wall Chinese food. I ordered a pint of veggy low mein and a pint of curry chicken. The curry chicken was great, fresh veggies, good quality chicken and not too spicy. The low mein kinda tasted funky though, it kinda tasted like it had too much bamboo shoot juice in it. Maybe next time it'll be different. The prices on the multitude of items is as cheap as it gets and makes it seem pointless to go through the hassle of making Chinese food yourself. With friendly, fast service they got my food ready just in time so I could go home and catch the Broncos.

when talking delivery this is our favorite place! The combo specials are a great deal, and we can never finish them. Our favorites are sesame chicken, orange beef, any of the lo miens and the egg drop with won ton soup. Delivery is always prompt, and they have figured out containers that keep food warm forever- you can bring the food in, watch a movie.... and then it eat, and it would probably still be warm! If you don't mind "hole in wall" atmosphere and an interesting crowd eating there is ok- if you're looking for any more atmosphere than that you won't get it- but the food is great! We have tried just about every other place that delivers to us and no one else compares! If they don't deliver it's definitely worth pick up!

i have a test for cheap chinese restaurants. They must have good lo mein for under five dollars. there's not much hope if they can't do good lo mein, and over 5 dollars is a rip off, its just street food. Great wall has delicious lo mein for under 5. in fact everything i've had there is very good, and its all extremely cheap. if it weren't for the fact that the food is so good, i'd be embarrassed to admit how much i go there (..a lot). i wouldn't stay and eat there, but you can't get much better take out.

My husband and I order from Great Wall every time we have a hankerin' for Chinese delivery. The food is pretty decent, especially considering the price. We get soup, appetizer, and 2 entrees every time we order and it's always less than $20. Is this the best chinese food you'll ever have? No, but the food is very tasty for the price, and convenience.

I have been eating here for 15 years and this place is solid and consistent. I am an Asian food snob and am fortunate to have grown up outside Manhattan and spent a lot of time in San Francisco. I have eaten at some of the best those places have to offer and while not on that level this place delivers good quality food. Not totally Americanized like a Little Ollie's and not trying to be Super Star Asian or Kingsland these guys have a few of my favorite things in the city. The best Wonton soup, best ribs, best eggrolls, and best people watching. Get one thing right this place is a show. If you mind watching some crazy crack head beg for money outside or the occasional bum rolling in to get warm I suggest take out. Colorful the local talent is.

This place does not want your business!!!!!!!! They would rather argue with you all night than deliver 3.8 miles to our house. Never mind that their website says that they will deliver within 5 miles for orders over $15. Sure, even their manager says they will deliver to us, but their employees, like Sandy, will refuse unless their manager, John is there. I have been a loyal customer for years, but it is time to move on. Don't bother with this place.

Indeed the boneless spareribs are my favorite here. Indeed the service is snappy but can you blame them? They are on Colfax and Grant aka the Vortex of Retard Central Station! I would be defensive too! You get 8!!! crabcheese wontons for $3.39!!!! Most places have the audacity to charge nearly $1 for 1 wonton-uh uh, no no! Do you REALLY think the markup on a fucking wonton would come to a DOLLAR? Great Wall, you may rough around the edges and surrounded by a gauntlet of toothless alcoholic schizoids but, I love you.

About as good as it gets for fast chinese food. Previous reviewer is dead on about how the phone order goes. You can hardly hear them with the pans clamoring in the background but in 10 minutes you have a pretty good piece of chinese cuisine for less than $8.00. If I want something for a lazy sunday to eat on my couch for an hour this is where I go, no questions asked.

WooHoo 'gleatwaw'. As I am writing this, I can see the back of the place across the parking lot from my study - I have seen many things here, things that no one should ever have to see... but none ever involved an uptight customer getting randomly assaulted for getting food, as some reviewers would have you believe. Good food! 8 giant wantons for like 3.50 - can't beat that with a stick. Seriously though, what is with all the reviews of 'it's so dangerous here ZOMG' and 'be careful at night' and stuff. I have lived behind the place for 5 years and have never seen one yuppie get hurt, YOU WILL BE FINE. It is not the inside of a Chipotle, I grant you that, but it is clean and the food is good. Grow up and order some Chinese Food on Colfax!! If you are still not convinced the area isn't 'grimy' and 'sketchy' as some of you so colorfully termed it, Google map it as see it is nary a BLOCK away from high end Cheeky Monk and respectable City Grille - you go THERE don't you? shaddup then! Tip: Ask for the home-made hot mustard. They won't give it to you if they don't know you unless you spend upwards of $20 there.... it is yummy.

I like this place a lot! Cheap, fast, good! The crab cheese wontons really are a great deal, just beware: That "lobster sauce" on the menu is some gnarly disgusting stuff. Stay away.

i have been living in the mile high off and on for the past 6 years and I have never been disappointed by the food here! John Cheung and his wife Yong and Jimmy they do a great job! The food portions are big for lunch and dinner and always good tasting!

These guys make the best vegetarian egg rolls in town! Don't expect much hospitality but you can always count on excellent dishes. Their prices are great and the portions are huge. The neighborhood isn't the best so beware if stopping in at night.

The most flavorless Chinese food I have every had. Huge portions, but amazingly bland. The wonton noodles tasted of rancid oil. It is hard to imagine that people could give this place a good rating. Service was generally very impersonal. We won't be back.

We both think this place for Chinese food delivery is pretty good. Really like the variety and choice on the menu and they have vegetarian and low fat options and portion size options for some dishes. The Lo Mein is pretty good, the spring roll was crunchy, my szechuan tofu was loaded with veg and the tofu was plentiful and fried nice. My BF liked his beef in garlic sauce.Love the prices here and have never had any issue with the delivery guy. All round its a good pick and recommended to others!

Don't be afraid. The price and quality of the food make it all worthwhile... and that doesn't even count the sheer entertainment value of a front row view of life on the "fax."

The 3 stars is for food quality and taste. For value this place would get a 5 and as it compares to most chinese food around here a 4. I got the boneless ribs, great portion size but a little dry, still it yielded 3 meals and was satisfying 3 days later. Pork Egg Foo Young lunch special was very good, with 2 large pancakes and plenty of dark rich gravy. For 5 bux + competent wonton soup, who's complaining? It's not some Mecca of asian food but it doesn't deserve to be beaten up because it's not. Cheap good fast (I call ahead and food is always ready by the time I'm there) A-OK in my book.

Let's be real here folks, 3 stars is pretty generous. Don't get me wrong, I am all about ghetto chinese take out and have had plenty of the NY variety, but this is not it. It was decent, cooked well, and very convenient, even well-priced considering the portion sizes. But this stuff was pretty flavorless. Not even the soy and hot sauces could save it. The hot and sour soup was actually pretty good, but we also got the sichuan beef, which had no flavor and was not the least bit spicy. It was tender though, but sichuan is usually cooked with a grip of chili peppers. There were none in this dish. The orange chicken was surprisingly good. it actually tasted like orange and not just sweet generic sauce. The fried rice that came with it was pretty bad though. The curry chicken had the faintest flavor of curry in it and was another disappointment. Best dish: hot and sour soup. Worst dish: curry chicken. Overall, not great, but if I was downtown in a hotel in a blizzard with no knowledge of things to eat in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to call them. I'd probably have to try something different though, maybe the boneless bbq ribs and hot wings.

I recently discovered Great Wall..now of course by 'recently discovered' i mean, recently discovered its a pretty great place to eat. Obviously, since the first time i set foot along this stretch of colfax, i've passed by this place. However, it wasnt until a couple of months ago when my roommate suggested we get chinese food for dinner, since neither of us was in the mood to cook. We ventured out...Great Wall here we come! I was a little hesitant because of the location..I was pleasently surprised! The food is excellent! The prices arent bad either. I can get out with veggie lo mein & a drink for under $5.

Have you ever eaten New York style chinese food? I know, I know, you're thinking either YES! or WTF is he talking about? If you ever ate chinese food in NYC there is a difference than from San Fransisco style. (or arvada style or Des Moines style, or any other style). It is defined by a taste, by the portion size, by lots of little subtle differences. Great Wall is this style. I order 8 pints of food (technically, that's only a gallon, and I know my stomach holds that much beer, so shouldn't it hold a gallon of chinese food?) of all my favorites, and usually try something I've never had there before (the menu has 300 items on it and the staff knows them by heart!!) and 33 minutes later I'm in a different place! I absolutely demand that you try the boneless pork spareribs! Unless you don't eat pork, you will love this! Sweet, smoky, porky heaven! Honestly, I have not found a bad dish, just things that weren't my personal taste. I had someones egg foo young, and not a fan, but I coulda eaten a plateful. It's something about my omlette-doesnt-want-gravy-on-it ethos. Delivery is usually fast, and they deliver FAR! If you are really into your food like I am, go eat there. It's never boring. You are located in an old DQ on the corner of Colfax and Pennsylvania, across from the Roslyn Grill. Entertainment enough! But the family that owns G W communicates by screaming full volume in Chinese. I feel like I'm watching a performance of some loud kind. It's gritty but fun times. Either way, this is great food, fast, cheap.

Ordered Chicken Lo Mein for carryout, drove a couple miles home, served it out to family. And there was no chicken, at all. Called the restaurant, they wanted me to bring the food back, only if it wasn't eaten. It's too far to drive back and we already started eating. Not cool. We paid $7 bucks for noodles. Do not plan on returning.

we split an order of seasame tofu. got that? SPLIT! the tab was less that $5! it was freaking delicious! and we both were stuffed (even though we split a plate) if I lived in Denver, i'd be at the Great Wall all the time...

Monday nights are takeout/cuddle/movie nights... we tried this place for Delivery last night. I am heating up my shrimp Chow Mein now.... I am excited! We ordered what we order at pretty much every Chinese place. Wontons, Soup, and two or three Entrees. So obviously I got Shrimp Chow Mein(a Pint) and it was standard (but as I am eating it right now i just spotted a bean of some sort.... it did not taste good...). We got Mongolian Beef and I have never seen so many Damn onions in a dish before! It was truly amusing. BUT.. Tasted yummy! Wonton soup in a quart size totally hit the spot! Great flavor! The fried Wontons tasted like onions... ha ha ha this place likes onions... and no it was no because I ate these little fried friends after the Mongolian beef... these are the first thing I eat and usually before checking to make sure I even got everything. So that was weird. We also got the biggest thing of sweet and sour combo...shrimp, chicken, and pork... that was really good! The breading was awesome. I usually hate the breading but this was light enough to satisfy! We also got egg rolls that were great... Delivery was fast. Spent 30 bucks and we both have lunch---and maybe dinner again... so much food....! WOOHOO Good place!

This place was disgusting and had terrible service, if you would like to get slimey veggieswith 4 snow peas and be yelled at by an angry asian woman....this is the place for you. Don't waste your time or money, just plain gross!

  • Michael R.

This place is run by a family and they are always busy. Despite being so busy they offer so much variety and cater to everyone with their low prices. You will often find the homeless of Colfax buying some egg rolls with their loose change. I must say for the price this is a great place and worth the experience and if you want Chinese takeout you get exactly what you would expect here and pay a little less.

This place has some great cheap dishes. I love love love the boneless rib combo and the egg foo yung. The service can be a little snappy, but it's faster that way right? I haven't been to many Chinese restaurants in Denver that I love...but this is one of them.

good solid place for take out/delivery. most lunch dishes are less than $5. beware that they just got popped by the health dept tho.

A-ok place. So so, mediocre. Be very careful of what you are ordering here cause some of the food here is not edible. Bad choice ordering sesame chicken, Bill. It's just a sticky sweet nasty mostly dried up minimum chicken but mostly puffed up coating. Cheap fast food. I always order the same stuff. Cream cheese crab wontons, boneless porkribs, singapore noodles (has nice curry flavor) and either wonton soup or hot and sour soup. Oh, yeah and their vegetarian tofu (make it extra hot) is very good (ask them not to overcook the tufu cause if cooked too long, tufu taste like leather, not good). I must say though it's fun to people watch here. bums, crackheads, hos, drunk injans, dirty mexicans and hip capitol hill people. innnnnnteresting!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
