Going to a new sushi restaurant can be kinda like going out on a first date: You are a little anxious. You've got great hopes. It's exciting. And you're looking forward to a new adventure. The babe and I tried out Fontana's last night and we had the best time. We totally over-did it. Sat at the sushi bar and had a really fun talk with the chefs who weren't that busy. Got their recommendations about several items and ended up with some things that weren't even on the menu. Waddled out after gorging for over an hour of non-stop gluttony. As for recommendations: absolutely try the hirame, if they have it. We both love saba and theirs was great/cheap at a buck a piece. Their diablo and fuji rolls knocked it outta the park, and the toro was superb, to say nothing about the fact that it was happy hour all day long and we had 2fer1 carafes of hot sake. So bottom line: Banzai!!! Give em a try. Sake sake, sis boom ba.

I love this place! The staff is as friendly and nice as they come. Have been several times and I ALWAYS look forward to my next visit. The sushi is really good, the restaurant is not pretentious at all, and the atmosphere is wonderful. You can't come here and not have fun. Very reasonable prices too, but they could increase them 15% across the board and it would still be a great value.

I don't really like this place. The sushi's okay, but nothing to write home about....and sadly, it's a little dirtier than I like my sushi restaurants to be. I don't want to get into the details, but unfortunately for me, while sitting at the sushi bar I saw too many things that would prevent me from returning. The way in which they keep the fish and other ingredients is less than to appealing to me, and the inconsistency of their personal cleanliness is as well. When I think of eating raw fish, I want the sushi preparers to be flawless. Otherwise, the idea that it's fresh is lost. The sushi was okay, in terms of taste, nothing special. I don't really need to explain. I am comparing the experience also to those I've had at other sushi bars in town, and really there is no comparison. :( On a good note, though, the server was extremely friendly, so I will give them an extra star for that.

I love this place! Grew up in Denver and best sushi I've had. Great service and will make any roll you like!

This is, hands down, my FAVORITE sushi restaurant in Denver - and I've tried them all! The spicy tuna is ALWAYS on point, yellowtail is absolutely delicious, and the spicy scallop roll is to die for. They have a lot of great tempura and "special" rolls, including fresh mango and tempura lobster. The staff is wonderful, and always remembers their regulars (we've been coming here for years)! If you're looking for great sushi, Fontana is a MUST TRY!

Our family has been dining at Fontana Sushi for almost ten years, and have made many happy memories in their dining room. When we first started visiting, the food was delicious, the prices were reasonable, and the service was top notch. Over the years the quality of the service and food began to wane, and we did not visit as much as we would have liked. I don't know if there was a shift in management or ownership, but the past few years have been exceptional, and we consistently bring our family of seven (sometimes with additional guests, and have hosted a party as large as 20) to enjoy an affordable sushi meal. Last night was no exception. Upon arrival we were seated promptly and drinks arrived almost instantly. We never had to ask for refills--they were offered before we noticed we were almost finished with our glasses. Miso soup, a complementary tofu-salad with cucumber, and edamame arrived quickly and satisfied our hungry bellies (and those of three children under 7) until our main sushi courses arrived. Taking the suggestion of our server (whom we believe to be the owner) we tried the scallop special and were very pleased with the dish. No one in our family generally likes scallops, but we decided to try them anyways, and the children were battling for the last bites. My five-year-old son asked if we could order a double order the next time we visited! Chopstick trainers are always available for our little ones when we ask, and the kids enjoy drawing on the white paper covering the tables or checking out the many saltwater fish tanks that decorate the restaurant. We always order salmon, yellowtail, and tuna sushi for the children, in addition to a novice roll of some sort. We take the recommendations of our server and are happy to go out of our comfort zone if she suggests we would like it. Hubby and I generally chow down on the usual salmon, tuna, yellowtail sushi/sashimi, new-style sashimi, seared halibut, and like to experiment with spicy rolls that have some fire to them. Last night we were happy to receive an unexpected side of grilled jalapenos to complement our meal, with the cheerful acknowledgement that it was noticed we enjoy the spicy d.ishes. We always drink hot sake and Sapporo, and the happy hour 2-for-1 beer/sake prices are a steal! We have paid double the price for lesser quality sushi at other Denver restaurants, or made to feel uncomfortable at expensive "swanky" sushi restaurants when we walk in with our brood of five children and ask for a highchair for the littlest one. Fontana Sushi always makes us feel at home and welcome, and the value of the meal has never disappointed. We are always greeted with a smile and cheerful attitude from the chef and owner (at least we think she is the owner!) and leave with full bellies and satisfaction with the amount paid at the end of the evening. We take our large family out for sushi here as often as we can afford, and Fontana Sushi holds a place in our hearts for all the meals enjoyed and memories we have made over the last ten years. :)

Lots of selection of entrees, sushi rolls and sashimi. Decent sushi rolls. The sashimi tasted a bit frozen though but I knew for the price it wasn't going to be amazing. Service was great - very friendly. We sat under an AC unit though and two of us found that our shirts were wet on the back. The manager apologized and gave us a free appetizer so that's all good. It's just water after all but they should look into that. I probably won't be back here unless I really want cheap sushi and I'm in the area but even then I could drive 5-10 mins away for some really amazing sushi.

I grew up in Denver. I wish they would change the location for Fontana to Wash Park area, as it is four blocks from Wash Park. I haven't counted my visits here, but it is probably somewhere in the 30-35 range. Every time I've been here, it has been the same experience- incredibly friendly staff (same lady at the door, same lady serving, same sushi chefs). The fish tank has all of the characters from Finding Nemo and that is great. The sushi is phenomenal. The prices are perfect. There aren't some college white guys making your sushi (like at garbage Hapa where the rolls fall apart). It may not be your typical sake-bombing frat boy hangout, but it's a sushi restaurant. What else can I say? It's my favorite place to get sushi in the Denver area. Side-note: Yelp is legally allowed to take money from businesses in order to give them higher status on Yelp. That's ridiculous, so I'm doing my part to give a well-deserved review of an incredible restaurant. I recommend this place to anyone looking for sushi and a great place.

Stopped in for Happy Hour the other day. I guess they've re-decorated and it's a lot nicer on the inside...at least to the company I was with. I was a Fontana virgin til this particular occasion. Anywhoo, we ordered an order of spring rolls which were ok, but too little inner veggies, etc. We ordered a bunch of the sushi which was good and the snow roll, which is friggin huge. Like, you have to take two or maybe three bites if you have a small mouth. Forget using chop sticks on this bad boy, but it was good. Sushi was what I'd call acceptable, and it's happy hour on sushi all day every day, so most of our sushi items were $1 per piece or maybe $1.50. Decently priced, if not cheap. Happy hour for drinks is 2 for 1's for most beers, wines or sakes and I believe is offered from 4:30 til 6:30. (although I didn't imbibe...gotta hydrate you know!) The service was really good as well. Here's the thing...there were an inordinate amount of flies and gnats in the place. That makes me a bit queezy in a sushi joint. To be honest, I'd rather go to Go Fish on Broadway, and there are a number of sushi joints in the neighborhood I have yet to try.

It's not often that I go here, but every time I go here, I often leave wondering, "Why don't I come here more?" Fontana Sushi is a great neighborhood sushi restaurant that offers good sushi for great prices--with such friendly service. You are always greeted with a genuine smile, which I appreciate! Their specialty rolls are great, and they usually have fresh higher end fish as daily specials. It's a good spot for a low-key weeknight dinner.

Low quality ingredients, hostile service, hungry bellies...and massive indigestion? Never again!! Please, don't go here. I used to consider Fontana a 3-star joint. Fine for a fishy fix, but by no means a treat. However, my last experience there prompted both me and my boyfriend to promise each other we'll never go back. To start, our waiter was rude and clueless. He fumbled a LOT while taking our order and didn't know the entrees came with soup/salad. I ordered the chirashi plate, and my bf the the stir-fried udon. We shared age dashi tofu, and never got the ponzu we requested... but we had bigger things to worry about soon enough. First sign of trouble was that the dressing on my salad was warm. Not a big deal for a carrots and vinegar, but in a place that serves raw fish, you want attention to detail. But when it really got shifty was when I received my plate. Now, I am no connoisseur, but I've been eating and loving sushi since I was 13. My first job ever was at a sushi restaurant. I know what to expect and what I like, and what I received tonight was a NOT acceptable. For the price, I expected it to be scant, but even with that expectation I was surprised to see that the salmon was so thin it split at the fatty lines when I picked it up. The albacore tuna which is beige-ish white when fresh, was a dark-grey color and had a dull look to it that was not appetizing. The maguro, which is a rich red color and has a matte but luminous look when fresh, was instead a deep, dense, almost purple color. Its surface was taut and glossy looking, and had that rainbow film on it like what cured meats get after days of air exposure... ew... I gave the fish a sniff, and it smelled BAD. Like feet or bad breath, though, not like bad fish. I was pretty confused, so I called over the waiter. He was not only combative, but also completely dismissive. He looked at me like I was a child and said "have you had tuna sashimi before?" When I pointed out the dull gray color of the albacore, he said it was because the kitchen sauces it in some garlic mixture overnight.... WTF? Not only is that totally bizarre for a dish like chirashi, but this fish did NOT smell like garlic. It smelled like the floor of a dojo. And garlic isn't grey... and what about the maguro? It sounded like a heap of BS. I asked for the manager, and in the meantime checked in with my boyfriend. He was not loving the noodles, and just picking at them half-heartedly, obviously just too hungry to stop. I was hungry too, so I tried a bite, and nearly gagged. THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM THE NOODLES. It made me nauseous to smell it up close, and I felt my stomach churn. My only guess as to how he could eat it at all is that maybe the smell is from a veg like cilantro, which some people love while to others it tastes like soap. I felt a bit sheepish that that GOD AWFUL smell wasn't coming from the fish, but I was still suspicious of the fish's looks and losing patience with the rude staff. When the manager came, I explained that the smell was the noodles, and apologized for accusing the fish of stinking, however, it still looked old and dull, not fresh and tasty. She too had a patronizing tone, and promised the fish had arrived fresh that day, and belittled my complaint. Clearly they had no intent of providing real customer service. Starving by this point, I decided to be a good (or maybe dumb) sport and try it. If you know raw fish, you know good sashimi usually has a firm texture, but a smooth mouthfeel. Salmon is the only fish I've had with an oily or slick mouthfeel, and the salmon and yellowtail were OK. However, the maguro was tough, hard to chew, and felt slick in my mouth. I spit it out into my napkin as discretely as I could. Luckily by now, my disgust had over-powered my hunger and we both just wanted to leave. On the other side of the table, my boyfriend remarked that the veggies on his noodle dish were not very good. He had by this point eaten all the meat and noodles from his stinky-plate and was dismayed to find that 80% of it was these soggy veggies, and that's all that was left. I'm amazed he had even that much. We asked for the check, left the minimal tip we felt was decent, and went to Larkburger for fries to supplement "dinner". The real kicker was that my boyfriend, obviously too polite (or hungry) to decry his food as well, ended up spending a long time in the bathroom that night as a result. After emerging from the bathroom, he reminded me that he'd gotten sick last time we went to Fontana too. I had completely forgotten! That was when we looked each other in the eye and promised: Never Again. Please, save yourself. There are too many better sushi joints in the area to bother saving a buck or two at Fontana, and paying for it on the

Phenominal service and exceptional pricing! Great sushi with ridiculously great happy hour prices, absolutely love this place! Annie and Danny will take care of you! Make sure to hit the two for one beers! All day long! Great sushi at a great price, would definitely recommend to a friend.

We have been going here every other Friday for what we call "Payday Friday Sushi" for years! Always consistent great nigiri, rolls, sushi, sashimi: especially the halibut fin, sea bass, black dragon roll, lobster roll... the owners including their son treat us like family. We even go other times especially when we try another place and our appetite isn't satisfied... we know we will always be happy, satisfied and full at Fontana's.

We were in the mood for some sushi, and I hadn't been to Fontana for a few years, so this wasn't our first consideration. After kicking around the idea we decided on Fontana, and what a surprise! As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by Annie, the friendly and gracious owner. She welcomed our party and we decided to sit at the sushi bar, in front of Annie's son and husband, who were busy preparing the freshest looking sushi I'd seen! While we looked over the menu they offered up some small samples of sea bass and smoked salmon for us to try, and it was delicious. We settled on several rolls, and every bite was incredible! Very fresh food, very clean restaurant and the friendliest staff we've encountered in a long time. We're definately returning! Denver has a handful of sushi places, and this is at the top of our list.

Wow, excellent service- quiet- romantic and alot of 1$ sushi that tastes alot better than other deals around town. The have a lot of special recommendation- fish just in or a special preparation and they are dead on - some of the best I've had. The chef's here can work wonders and have alot of skill. But they also seek to satisfy the average sushi fan too. The menu is a very nice mix. You also get coupons at the end of the meal for sushi bucks. The have a killer 24 piece lunch special for 10 bucks. I'm going back next week for that for sure! This is a place of integrity and they are trying hard to provide you with a meal you will savor. That is not common in the world of sushi joints in Denver. Nice happy hour deals too. I'm an otter from the east coast. So I know good raw fish. Give it a try!

Not bad sushi, but not fantastic either. Good prices. The couple that owns the place is pretty hilarious--the woman will act sweet as sugar when she takes your order, and then she turns around and yells at her (husband? son?) who makes the sushi. Quite the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Fontana has online ordering. I'm all about any restaurant ordering that involves me not having to talk to people. You see, working in retail makes me want to come home and ignore the world. But I digress... The online ordering was relatively painless (through a third party website, of course) and the delivery time wasn't horrific (under 45 minutes). The food, however, was less than good. In fact, my sushi tasted a bit "off" and the fiancee's food wasn't good either. We begrudgingly ate it (because I had paid for it) and decided that we won't be doing that again. I know, I know--delivery sushi is a bad idea. But really, it's not. I've had sushi delivered from other restaurants that's been fine! I think it all just depends. Maybe we'll give them a try in-house one day? But with enough other delicious sushi restaurants, I doubt it.

I used to really like this place and the sushi was great. Last time I visited the cuts were half the size and really terrible. The Maguro was shriveled and gross. The rest of my order was really bad. I won't be back.

I find that their prices are incredibly fair and the sushi is really good. I've been to sushi restaurants in Denver and paid a lot more money for the same or lesser quality sushi. The staff is very friendly. This is my go to place for sushi.

Ordered delivery at 9:25. Food arrived at 9:55. I think its pretty cool to get healthy food delivered after 9pm. No doubt, its not the best I've ever had. But its the best I've eaten in my pajamas. I will order from here again.

I have ordered from Fontana Sushi plenty of times for delivery and they have always done an acceptable job of delivering on time and giving great sushi. Tonight was not one of them. Not only was my sushi broken apart when I opened the package, my edemame was cold and my food was delivered at 9pm (I ordered at 7:15). The delivery guy reeked of pot- enough to make me think he was busy smoking that instead of making his deliveries-- do whatever you want on your own time, but do what you're suppose to do while you're at work! I feel defeated and I'm never using this service again.

Got a delivery order. The receipt provided was over $10 off of the actual total (didn't include tip or delivery charge) and the delivery person was a complete jerk. Basically told me too bad I can't have the actual receipt. (which I needed-it's not just about the $10, it was about the fact I used a corporate card and receipts need to match totals, or else there's consequences.) He was completely rude and non helpful -I wish I hadn't pre-paid the tip, as he didn't deserve it. I argued with him for 3-4 minutes and in the end, I had to go make a copy of it. The restaurant called and apologized (which that, and the sushi, is the only reason they are getting this many stars).

I've been hitting this place for years. Even after we moved to the other side of town, we still keep coming back here whenever we need a sushi fix. Prices are reasonable and the quality is great. The service is great (listen to the advice of your waitress-she's never steered us wrong). Make sure you check out the specials on the board. They're often very good and will give you an idea of what's fresh. The last time we were in we had some very good halibut. There's a very great deal of variety, including a lot of the traditional stuff you'd expect (salmon, tuna, octopus, squid) and plenty of more off-the-wall stuff as well. I just have two real complaints. First, some of the booths next to the fish tanks are kind of narrow and cramped and could do with a little more space. Second is that parking is sometimes a bit of a hassle, although there's usually space around the corner on the street near the dairy.

I totally dig Fontana. I've always had really great service here...not to mention their "happy hour" pricing, which is $1 sushi...everyday!! Can't beat that! Plus, its right across the street from one of my 2 jobs, so the convenience factor is spot on!

Good, solid sushi...not the level of sushi den but a place that I would frequent more often because it's not as pricey and very casual.

Fontana, has a upcoming new menu and one of the new features are a Kid's menu!! Now kids can have sushi, catered for kids. Folks at Fontana, took what the customers had to say and added a children's menu for sushi loving parents!

The first time I went here I totally loved the place. They have spicy crab rolls- WHAT is there to complain about there?? All the rolls, appetizers, whatever I had there was good the first few times I went. The interior is pretty cool, but I must admit that if you're sitting near a fish tank it's a bit unsettling because you're sitting there the whole time looking at the fish and thinking about how you're about it eat it's murdered brother.... Anyway, I didn't go back there for like a year, and when I did, it just wasn't how I remembered it. It wasn't bad, just not as amazing as I thought. A few months after that I went back again, and it was even worse than the previous time. Plus the service was suuuppperrr slooowww that time. I don't want to write off the place just yet, but if it keeps the trend it's on, I may have to update and knock a star off in the future :( Sad!

I'm giving this a 4 because I can't give it a 3.5. We call it "Neighborhood Sushi" because it's there, and it's a staple, and it doesn't break your wallet as much as some of the other establishments I like more. I tend to be leery of pre-cut fish, which is the worst I can say about this place. I tend to like sitting at a sushi bar, striking up conversations with people and the guy opposite the cooler. Something about watching someone cut your fish makes me happy. The fish tanks are cool, and the beer and sake specials not a bad thing, nice place for kids, and 2 private rooms. Good place to run into friends or meet up with someone without having to rearrange your whole schedule. The tobiko can be good, depending upon the day it can be wasabi, red or black. They don't sluff off masago as tobiko like some sushi bars. The sushi slices tend to be thinner than most (since it's dollar sushi for most of your major staples all but one minute of the day). Kaibashiri (nori cup with spicy scallops inside) is done well here, but I can't say the hamachi (yellowtail) is consistently good. They do tend to have lots of special rolls, which is a saving grace. I definitely support having this place in my 'hood, even though I can think of half a dozen places in town that are better) in a second if I have to.

  • Emily C.

I would say this place gets 2.5 stars for food and a solid 4 for service. Everyone who works here are just the sweetest and super friendly. The sushi is sort of a step up from grocery store sushi but still pretty good. I was visiting my cousins who live in the area and this is their go-to neighborhood sushi place. The rolls are pretty standard and decent. The Jacky roll, not on the menu, is amazing. Salmon, row, and avocado with a spicy sauce. Amazing. Oh and the seaweed salad was really fresh and tasty. The edamame was sadly over done and really salty. Oh and the Thursday we went there was two for one beer special. Now that I will come back for. For the price and location, this place is ideal. If I lived in the area I would probably hit it up on a weeknight when I'm craving fresh inexpensive sushi. Certainly not the best I've had but good enough.

what a terrible experience. delivery sushi is always sketchy, but john holly's has made me a believer. annnnd fontana sushi made me trust john holly's and john holly's only. ordered around 12:05 only to have a lady cut me off throughout the whole conversation (we are not dating, lady. you may not, under any circumstances, finish my sentences). irate, yes. price for 5 rolls and one order of japanese fried rice, doable. after waiting 45 minutes, my food was delivered. the bag was warm, borderline hot. yikes. the rice was put on the bottom of the bag. so the heat could rise throughout the sushi. awesome. took one bite of the spicy scallop roll. immediately spit out. it tasted sour and the rice fell apart on the way from the plate to my mouth. horrid. shot over to the spicy tuna. just as bad. tried the kirin roll. no bueno. went over to the hot roll. meh. i felt less sketch, but with the quality of the other sushi items, i figured the deep fried goodness was hiding the real crap fish that was rolled up inside. i actually prepared myself for disappointment by ordering a california roll ('cos nobody can eff up a california roll, it's bitch sushi) and japanese fried rice. holy. shit. the cali roll was mushy, warm and tasted like straight up mayo. the rice had NO flavor aside from the maraschino cherry placed on top (yeeeeah, wtf). i kid you not, i took one piece of each sushi roll and four bites from the rice before i gave up and threw $50 (with delivery tip) of food away. i wouldn't even give a bite to my doggies out of fear that they would wake me up at 3 am, regretting their choice to beg for such crap. my hungover fiance didn't try anything, but he kindly reminded me that john holly's separates their sushi from their entrees in separate delivery bags and actually know what they're doing. what a waste.

This place is bad and overpriced. Aquariums are a bit dirty, servers are not knowledgeable about fish. All of their rolls are drenched in a sort of sweet sauce, which reminds you of teriyaki sauce but thicker and more translucent; for me, it's very disrespectful to serve fish like that. It's totally overpriced. Whole Foods down the road has a much better sushi.

I have eaten here probably 30 times and each time is a little different. Good and Bad. I enjoy the fact that they have a 10 dollar lunch plate where you can pick 3 rolls and soup and salad... I always save the soup for later : ) Dinner with friends here is great! It is relaxing and you can come in jeans! Ray can get a little out of control on ordering (which i love cause we get 6 rolls and 20ish pieces of sashimi and apps...etc ) and we spend a boat load of money! I It has progressively gotten a little "dirtier" as time has passed but it not filthy. I enjoy it here quite a bit but i do not go too out of my way to come here.

I've been here 20+ times, and its almost an insult to talk about their $1 Nigiri sushi, because I'd wager very few could tell the difference between their sushi and the same thing 1 mile southwest of Fontana, at triple the price (you know where I'm talking about). I'm no sushi snob (my ideal meal is $9.99 all-you-can-eat sushi) but if I *were* a sushi snob, I'd still eat here. If you prefer Maki (rolls) or sashimi, then there's nothing special about Fontana. The deserts suck, it lacks some of the inventive, experimental menu items found at pricier sushi joints, and it certainly doesn't have the best ambiance, but if nigiri is your favorite (as it is mine), this is THE place for you.

Need good, not great, sushi at an affordable price? Then, this is your place. Fontana is our go to sushi restaurant when we have a craving but don't want to pay a lot. For the price, $1 per piece all day, we feel that we are getting what we pay for. It seems that the quality has improved since we started going there over two years ago and the piece size has also gotten larger. The wait staff is always in a good mood and extremely friendly. Lately, we've been trying a new specialty roll every time we go in and we have been pleasantly surprised each time. I'm not big on spicy, so we tend to stay with the milder rolls. My fiance does enjoy the spicy tuna and scallops. Their latest addition to the menu is their beer special, which we assume is to compete with the restaurant next door. The latest special is BOGO on beer, all beer, including the large bottles.

My friend recommend this place to me, she said the sushi is really good and it's cheap. Well, to me, the sushi is ok, nothing spectacular here. She was right on the price though. If you are looking for a cheap sushi fix, then yes, check out Fontana's. If you are looking for great sushi, then skip Fontana's!

Hands down the best green tea ice cream I've ever had!! It was so yummy. The flower roll was really good too. We also got golden mussels, miso soup, spider roll, and spicy scallop but those were okay. I had better at other places. Service was great!

A decent place for dollar sushi (all day for eat-in) and good rolls. If you've been to some of the fancier sushi places, then this place will seem a little bit of a dive. However, if you want to grab a quick bite of sush and hit the Candlelight...it's perfect. I recommend the spicy tuna rolls. A word of warning...you can eat there cheap if you stick with the sushi but your bill will quickly add up if you expand your selections. If you don't mind paying full-price for sushi, it's a great delivery place in the wash park area.

Fontana is your standard run of the mill Colorado sushi spot. Not too great, not too bad. Will I return? Sure. Will I recommend it to others? Why not? Not much more to say here. If you want some reasonably priced sushi, and you are in the area....give it a shot. My only advice is try not to be too adventurous, I question the quality of the fish. Your standard stuff seems fine; shrimp, yellow-tail and spicy tuna......but try not to stray too far. I would stay away from the Krab with a K, clams, and their lobster(ish) looking stuff. I had the spicy shrimp, a special tempura roll, and the yellow-tail roll. They were decent. There are a million sushi places like Fontana, its nothing special. Try it if you're in the area but don't go out of your way.

They're slipping. I must say the aquariums are looking pretty nasty. The staff said they used to have someone come in and clean them and now they don't. What else could they be cutting corners on? The food was still your ordinary $1 sushi... but, like they say, you get what you pay for.

I used to love this place, in fact it was the first place i ever *had* sushi so it's been my baseline. Unfortunately that was years ago... Since then the service has gotten slower, the pieces smaller and fish quality has dropped considerably. The mackrel is nasty now and i used to love it. Major bummer, but you get what you pay for. But then, you can get a Spicy McChicken for a dollar and on some visits I would have chosen the McChicken.

As good as it gets for sushi! Great atmosphere too!

Not the best sushi I've had, but definitely not the worst. The fish is a little smelly, so for what you pay for I don't know if it's worth it. I also had the katsu don, which wasn't great. All in all I would have rather have paid more for a bit better quality.

If you go to this place during when they do specials on the sushi then you are in good shape. You may not want to go on days when it is full priced. Nevertheless I had a very enjoyable time when I went here.

You know how when you order sushi, by the time it gets to you you forgot what you ordered? Soooo we ordered this "special roll" which was around $11, when it got to us it definitely wasn't what we ordered. It was basically imitation crab and avocado and A LOT of cucumbers. Isn't that basically a california roll? I for sure wouldn't have ordered that cause I am a anti-crustacean-ite. Or something to that effect. I know for certain there was supposed to be yellowtail in it, but alas, we couldn't communicate well enough to get it fixed. So -1 star there. Everything else was super delicious! Had alaska roll, spicy tuna (which was super fatty and oh-so flavorful), and unagi. Boy was delighted with all the $1 sushi and 2 for 1 sake was enhancing.

Dollar sushi. What more can I say? It's only for select options from their nigiri menu, but whatever-- it's DOLLAR sushi. It's all day. It's every day. It's dollar sushi. Fontana may not have the best or fanciest sushi in town. It may not be the hippest or most mod when it comes to decor. It may not be a place to see or be seen. But it's got dollar sushi. And it's decent. If you're craving raw fish but you don't have a business expense account or daddy's credit card in tow... Fontana is your place.

Fontana used to be my favorite sushi restaurant. The $1 rolls didn't hurt one bit in that opinion, but the food was far better than that cheap price. The servers are friendly enough and the ambience very nice. But the last time I was there I had a tuna roll that was inedibly bad (as in, the fish had turned) and it has scared me away from going back. Devoting themselves to cheap eats is, in some ways, admirable, but not if it means they have to buy subpar fish to keep the price that low. I'd rather have good fish for a reasonable price and know that the restaurant is striving for something beyond being cheap.

Let me preface this review by saying that every restaurant has a bad night.....however I wouldn't be willing to return to find out if this was the case. 1. Was pressured/rushed to place an order 2. Was not asked if we wanted anything to drink, the waitress rushed off before we could ask for tea 3. Appetizer was forgotten 4. First order arrived 20 minutes before the 2nd order arrived 5. Sashimi was frozen 6. Sushi rice was warm 7. Thank goodness they didn't ask if we wanted dessert. This was the worst sushi experience I have ever had. I went on a recommendation from a friend that the sushi was decent for the price, so my expectations were low to begin with. I will say that the seaweed salad was good, but that was it.

They don't give the option of zero stars or negative stars and that is what this place deserves. Fontana Sushi is awful. The rice was old tasting and not soft and easy to eat like other sushi. They use imitation crab!!!!! YUCK. $4 for a California Roll with fake crab- go to John Holly for 50 more cents you get high quality REAL crab. The shrimp was tasteless and the Soba noodles were disgusting- seriously- we had 8 people eating and no one ate them- everyone put a little on their plates and we all agreed they weren't bad- they were disgusting. I bought $100 of food for my family and a family we were having over for dinner. I should not have tried this place for as much as I spent. We were all very disappointed- they can't even cook decent sushi rice?! I called and expressed my disappointment and he said he was sorry he couldn't make me happy and that most places charge $8 for a California Roll. I informed him that his competitors charge a mere 50 cents more for real, good quality crab with melt in your mouth sushi rice. Seriously it hurts to give them $100 for crappy, crappy, low quality food. I could have yummy, high quality food for the same amount of money from John Holly. Live and learn and you get to learn w/o the pain of ordering from Fontana since I have spent this time to write this out. My loss is your gain.

I had dinner here last night for the first time. I'll definitely be going back. The food was great, reasonably priced, great atmosphere, and the service was great. My neighbor and I shared 3 rolls and few pieces of nagiri. The spicy scallop role was my favorite. We also got there during happy hour and we were able to get 2-1 wine. Gotta love that. Everyone that worked here was very nice and smiling. Even the sushi chef was all smiles. Sometimes those guys seem so serious. Definitely a great little neighborhood sushi place.

First I went with one my good friends for a weekday lunch. Second visit was with my hubby for a weekend lunch. Third visit was with like 11 others, a group of us who loves eating sushi for a dinner sushi meetup. All in all Fontana gives what it can offer. Nevertheless, they can do better.

This review is based on what you get for the price. It's not as good as somewhere like Sasa, but for the price it can't be beat. My guy and I eat out a lot, and Fontana is one of our standard casual night out places. The service is spectacular. Everyone's friendly, they remember what we like, and have great recommendations. The sushi is great too. The mackerel is perfectly salty and fishy, the smoked salmon is as good, if not better, than at some of the more expensive places, the BB and Queen rolls are delightful, and their golden sake is exactly how it should be- it's something fancier places don't make right. For a while there the cleanliness factor seemed to slip, but they got much better lately. The only downside is that they use fake crab, but for $1 a piece, what can you expect? This place is great for affordable, yummy sushi in a casual setting.

I wasn't raised in Japan, but I have been to Sushi restaurants all over this country, and love Fontana. It's unpretentious, and IMO has the best spicy Tuna rolls in town. I love to eat sushi a lot, yet can't afford Sushi Den every week - so this is my place. And for lunch - you seriously cannot beat their "lunch special:" soup, salad, and your choice of 3 rolls for under $10. Did I mention their spicy tuna roll's the bomb?

  • Lauren R.

Fontana, you dissapoint me sometimes. And it pains me to say this, because you have proven to have excellent, affordable sushi. Your staff is friendly, if a bit scattered and panicked. Your decor is spartan and unassuming, which is nice in a sushi bar. But do any of you motherfuckers know how to pick up a pen? Twice I have made reservations here a week in advance. And twice I have been made to wait an hour, even though I had said reservation, while people all around me were seated. Im a real bitch about things like this, because I believe its the little things that make a dining experience great, and service is such a huge one that I will totally stop going somewhere if I get rubbed the wrong way too many times. See the Opal review to find out more. Fontana, you've got two strikes with me. One more and you are out. They are just really understaffed, I believe, and lacking in somebody who is a HOST. Not a chef or the proprietor, or anything else, but the fucking HOST whose only job is to take your name down and sit your ass down when you come in. So, I recommend fontana for lunch or early weekday dinners, when the traffic flow is normal. Stay away on the weekends.

This place had good sushi at reasonable prices and the service was great! I highly recommend the spicy tuna and diablo rolls if you like spicy sushi. The servers were incredibly friendly and our drinks were never empty. I'll definately be back!

This place is great! Great taste! Great ambiance! Great prices! I was sooo pleased with this joint and the server was very good (okay, well he took away my Edamame plate with a few left on there that I was looking forward to but whatever)...

I'd really like to recommend Fontana Sushi; they're relatively inexpensive, friendly, and frequently have good deals. The sushi, however, is just not very good. It's decently constructed, but I suspect they are using the lowest grade cuts of fish they can get away with. My dinner this evening actually left me feeling a bit ill.

I don't know exactly what the comment someone left that "dining at Fontana is like dining on the set of Chinatown" is supposed to impart... Is that a metaphor for "there are wrongs in life that will never be set right?" or "Water is the lifeblood of every community"? Is this because they have a lot of fish tanks? Does Roman Polanski slip in the country to get the 3 color roll? I am confused. What is not confusing is the nice waitstaff, the art supplies for documenting the actions of the fish in the tanks on your tablecloth and cheap but well made (in my caucasian opinion) sushi. I recommend pretty much anything. Does this mean eating at Casa Bonita is like dining on the set of "The Two Jakes"?? So many questions, not enough answers... Well, if anything... "It's Fontana Jake...It's Fontana..."

I think this is Wash Park's best kept secret. But I may be partial because they deliver within a two mile radius, for those nights when you don't mind heating up your own sake. This is my favorite sushi place because it's super affordable but the quality of fish is pretty comparable to the more high end places. I really enjoy their roll combination and selection as well.

Fontana is casual enough to feel like eating sushi isn't an expensive treat, with quality sushi that doesn't disappoint. Half the price of Sasa or Sushi Den, Fontana doesn't require a reservation, though a wait might be required on Friday/Saturday night. Delicious unagi, always served warm, is really nice. I enjoy that all servers and chefs are Japanese, and that occasionally there's a bit of a language barrier. I'm not a fan of Fontana's shrimp dynamite (go to Sasa for the good stuff), but Fontana has plenty of house specialties that make up for it. I've never had a bad experience at Fontana, though I'll admit I'm a sushi-whore.

I lived a block from Sushi Den and a mile or so from Fontana. Still I used to order delivery at least once a week from Fontana when I lived here. They were always accommodating with any little changes that I asked for. (Being from Florida I did not like driving in the snow so their delivery was a great bonus for me.) I ate in also and one of the last times I had eaten in they were doing some construction to expand. I never had a bad order from Fontana and their prices are affordable. Whenever I'm in town again, I will be stopping by for my sushi fix.

I stopped at Fontana Sushi for the first time ever to order take out on a Friday night at around 7 PM. I ordered two rolls and waited about twenty minutes without saying a word before stopping someone and asking if they knew how close my order was. The hostess told me should would check and apologized because she said they had been hit with a rush right before I arrived, which seemed odd because the dining room looked pretty empty. I waited another ten minutes and stopped her again and she again gave me an excuse about them being busy. A few more minutes passed and I stopped her one more time and asked for the manager. She disappeared and returned with a server, who I am still not certain was a manager. This person acted like she could not understand me or speak English very well and I became more and more confused about where my order went. I asked for my money back, by this point I was 45 minutes into waiting for two rolls, and she refused and disappeared. I asked the hostess where she had gone and she acted as confused as I was. The manager person returned with my food almost immediately and tried to hand it to me. I told her I didn't want it, that I only wanted a refund and to go and she insisted I take the food. There were several other people waiting to be seated or to order to go food and I didn't want to cause a scene, so I took the food and let the manager know I was very upset and would not ever be back. She apologized and dug through a drawer until she found a $3 coupon for my next visit and tried to hand it to me. I left the coupon and again made it clear I wouldn't be returning. The worst part was, the food wasn't that great, especially after spending $17 for two rolls and waiting nearly an hour. I moved to Denver a couple of years ago and this by far the worst experience in customer service I have had since I moved here.

I may be fond of Fontana Sushi because it's the first place I really got my sushi groove on. It also doesn't hurt that they'll deliver to my house. When eating in, I enjoy the atmosphere and watching the sushi rolled and chopped. We celebrated a friend's birthday there and had a great time sharing orders and trying everything. My favorite is the Philadelphia roll which I am positive is one of those totally American bastardizations of sushi. But for me, the delicious smoked salmon wrapped around the cream cheese and cucumber dipped in soy sauce mixed with wasabi is just about sushi heaven.

When I need to satisfy my craving for yellowtail without breaking the bank, I head to Fontana. The fish has always been fresh, the service has been warm and speedy. Not many crazy roll or drink options- though the happy hour is great- but when you just want some sashimi who cares. yay for Fontana!

Fontana has everything going for it. It's cozy, comfortable, and welcoming. The sushi is always fresh and the chefs are awesome when it comes to creating something just for you. The staff is remarkable and really know how to make you feel at home. It's easy to see why they have so many regulars.

I would totally agree that they have awesome spicy tuna rolls. Definitely the place we go for good priced sushi thats close to home. If you want amazing quality innovative sushi then there are other places to go but for the budget minded sushi lover this place is a nice alternative. Interesting rolls, good service, and did I mention the spicy tuna roll?!

Fontana Sushi used to be my destination of choice, but that was years ago. In the last 3-4 years this place went from being hip and gritty with a fun energy, to disappointingly dingy with questionable staff. The sushi used to make my eyes roll back and the endorphin rush lasted long after I left the restaurant. Then came the cut backs: dirty fish tanks (shame on your negligence), smaller pieces of less than fresh nigiri and flat out insulting staff. The last part was the most disappointing. Prior to my last two experiences, the staff always did a good (sometimes great) job and were handsomely compensated for their efforts. However, my last two visits, a female staff member (the same one both times) took my payment and actually counted the money in front of me. It made my jaw drop. I had never been so insulted in a restaurant, ever. The first time I thought it was a fluke and blew it off to a lapse in etiquette because it appeared as if she was training a new staff member. The second time, I was downright insulted, knew something there had changed and have not been back since. Service matters to me even more than the food, so not being made to feel welcome; hell slapping me in the face basically, sent me to other destinations to enjoy my sushi. I hope no one else had to experience this, but if you go to Fontana and receive what you consider to be questionable service, odds are it is not your imagination.

I'm not sure what's up with this place. Seems like a new staff or new owner or both. It has been my favorite "cheap" sushi destination for a couple years. The last two times I went (Sep and Oct 2008), the service was awful. At dinner, it took so long to get our food that I thought they must have forgotten us. At lunch, the staff were so involved in a conversation with each other that it took them 20 minutes to take my order when I was the only person there and then my bill was wrong. Servers both times did not speak english well enough to answer really simple questions about the menu. The fish tanks now look sad and dirty. I don't think the food has changed, but the service and vibe have. I used to really like this place, but I'm not sure I want to give it a 3rd chance for redemption.

Prices, staff, food..can't beat it. LoVE it. The food is always fresh. Prices - can't beat the $1/piece menu. Always a great selection. And the staff is so very friendly. My FAVORITE place for lunch!

  • Lydia P.

The sushi here is absolutely delicious. I love every single bit of it. And for the most part it's not too incredibly expensive. I go here almost every Friday for lunch. I'd heartily recommend the lunch roles because those are the cheapest but almost everything on their menu is great including the desert, and if you get desert I'd either recommend the red bean mochi or red bean ice cream. The green tea ice cream isn't too great but the red bean is delicious. The paper tablecloth is also really fun to draw on too. Another plus. I only gave it three stars largely because they are not too great on the service. Once they serve you the food they never come back. And if you want something else you have to physically get up to get someone's attention, and they do have the occasional fly's running around and I'm not a huge fan of flies. I don't know anything about their delivery experience but if you want to go in and sit down for lunch it's not too terrible of an option.

Two stars, one for speed and the other for the driver who was nice. The curry sauce was starchy and bland. The cutlet was under-cooked. Altogether, just not good food or value.

    (2)
  • Hannah I.

Great prices for lunch! 3 rolls for $9.95 and $1 pieces of sushi all day. Only annoyance was a hovering fly, which is kind of gross if you think too much about it. Other than that, the service was great and the food was good.

I ordered Fontana last night for delivery. They said it would be 45 minutes and the delivery person came in probably 20. Free delivery within 3 mile radius. Very good value for nirgiri, $1 per piece dine in, about $2 dine out. I also had the philly rolls, good balance of ingredients. Black dragon rolls were also awesome. Good sushi, good value.

  • Chris H.

I will start by saying I never give a Sushi place less than 4 stars..why? Because I don't eat Sushi and I don't think it is fair for a non-sushi eater to give a bad review to a sushi place. But...my wife loves sushi so alas...I often find myself at sushi restaurants. We went to Fontana Sushi with the whole fam and everyone seemed to really like the sushi. Service was OK to mediocre...but everyone liked the food. I had my regular sushi hater food of chicken teriyaki. It was good.

  • Kristina L.

I was first attracted by the central location and later-than-most hours. The setting was so intimate yet comfortable with the tanks full of beautiful tropical fish. Loved the paper tablecloth- my date and I got creative while waiting for our meal ;). Or server was super sweet and a master at upselling! The bill was certainly more than I would like to spend on sushi night although I enjoyed every bit of the flavors. We even got a 10% coupon for our next visit! Don't think it's economical as a casual sushi joint - more for drawn out conversations, doodling, and that one time we splurge on fine dining. Get the mochi! Cheers.

This review is for their DELIVERY service specifically, and allows for the fact that we are in Denver... not San Francisco. My wife and I eat a lot of sushi. We've been to many places in Denver, but when we don't feel like going out (but still want the experience), this is our hands down go-to place. We've ordered delivery sushi from here six times or so in the last few months, and everything I have to say about them has been consistent. So far, no other delivery sushi comes close (I haven't reviewed them, yet). We usually get a mix of regular and specialty rolls. The fish has always tasted fresh, as all the ingredients. One thing that sticks out to me is that whomever is creating the dishes (or prepping the ingredients) seems to be really OCD / meticulous about getting exactly the right cuts of carrot, cucumber, etc; too often, those things are thick and sloppy which really detracts from a good sushi experience. The rice is the right texture and everything holds together well. Solid offering there. We've also tried the shu mai, which was pretty delicate with a nice sweet sauce - though it did arrive less than hot both times. No stars docked for that, we're a few miles away and lucky they deliver uptown. The gyoza on the other hand arrived hot and tasty the few times we've had it. Same for the miso soup - on par with any miso I've had... but I guess it's hard to mess that up ;) Venturing out from my usual selections, last night I ordered the yakisoba. That was what prompted me to finally review the place - what a stunner! I was expecting the usual "salt bomb" noodle dish; what I got was a nicely balance noodle, chicken that was actually breaded meat (not the beaks and feet gristle you might be resigned to if you eat Asian in Denver very often). Really very pleasant. My wife had a couple of bites and mused, "this is better than any lo mein I've ever had in this town." Sure, they're not the same dish, but we love noodles, and these guys do them well. If I had to nitpick, maybe a tad on the oily side, but I'd rather that than dry and clumpy. We've probably tried two other delivery sushi places here. If you're not appalled by the idea of having sushi "in" and you don't feel like going to get it, this place outclasses the others so far.

Fontana Sushi is a wonderful little family owned place. Often go there for date nights and really enjoy how the owner and sushi chefs recognize us and welcome us back. Sushi is always delicious and well crafted. Good beer and wine selection. Also, good entertainment in the form of several large saltwater fish tanks. Would highly recommend a visit to Fontana sushi.

LOVE this place! I wish I could give it 10 stars. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch on our first date and we keep coming back on our anniversary every year. I think we need to start coming in at least once a month. I have tried almost every sushi place across the Denver metro area and I still keep coming back to this one. everything about this place is fantastic. A nice casual but classy atmosphere with beautiful fish tanks and the nicest staff that you could ever wish for in a restaurant. Let's talk about the food! Every time we go in there, it seems to be happy hour. We get two for one Kirin Ichiban and two for one small hot sake. Yes please! They also do $1 pieces of nigiri all day every day. They also have some killer lunch specials during the week. The last time we were in (Sunday, July 5), our server Richard, asked us if we would like fresh wasabi with our sushi. FRESH wasabi? Get right out of town! I went for it, and I'm so glad that I did! It was light and herbaceous and vegetal in flavor with a lovely texture and punch in the face of horseradish heat. Just the way I like it. How do I describe how good the rolls are? We ordered the Diablo roll, toped with tuna, garlic butter and scallions. It's to die for. The Green Fire roll is also outstanding. It's a spicy, deep fried jalapeño popper of sushi. It brings a tear to my eye, it's so good. Don't forget the Nemo roll with the spicy tuna, jalapeño and sriracha. The quality and freshness of the fish itself is impressive. The sushi rice is done perfectly. There seems to be a great attention to detail by the sushi chefs. Everything is so well done and consistent and so nicely presented. This is really their art medium. A shout out to our servers Richard and Amy(?). They really made our experience special. We can't wait to come back.

This is our local sushi spot. The sushi is ok. Their new style sushi is good. Their gyoza is good. Their edamame can be variable. They serve ramune which is a bonus. It always surprises me how good the sushi places are in Denver given how close to the ocean it is.

This is where you go when you want great sushi for a reasonable price. Their $1 nigiri when you dine in is reason enough to eat here frequently. Its never busy enough and the wife and I want this place to explode with business. The owners are always working and are the nicest! Best miso soup in town and the have coca cola in glass bottles. Score.

I have been here several times and keep going back. The sushi here is very fresh. The Spanish Mackerel was the best I have ever had and the seared Halibut was to die for! Also, try the fresh wasabi.

Diamond in the rough, amazing sushi for the price and better than some higher priced places in Denver. Queen roll, dancing roll and the green fire are all amazing and the place always has 2 for 1 drinks! Highly recommend.

  • Ryan U.

It's hard to give a bad review, however the service was just rude, inattentive and sales pushy. 1/2 the meal was on point, while the other was a big fat fail. For example: We ordered two grilled octopus (octopaii?) One was cooked well and hot. And, one was super chewy and luke warm. Sushi was hit and miss also. Our waitress made a mistake, and brought the wrong roll. No sorry, she was like, "you pay 1/2?." Ugh.

Although I am not an expert when it comes to sushi, this restaurant serves the best sushi that I've had by far. I don't live directly in Denver, but I do try to make the drive down here once a month or so, and I'm never disappointed. The decor in the restaurant is great with lots of bamboo and fish tanks all around. It also never gets too rowdy, and we've always been seated easily. I love the salmon skin roll and also the flying fish egg (per piece), and as far as sushi goes, Fontana Sushi makes it affordable and enjoyable. Of course, they serve the classics as well, and their fish always tastes very fresh to me. They're great at letting you know which fish they just got in, and our server is always very gracious and kind. Their miso soup would probably be the best soup on earth to have if you had a cold, and is just as great as an app before the sushi. I give them 5 stars because they are serving a quality product with good service--exactly what a restaurant is about. Keep in mind that because it's located on Alameda, parking can be a little bit of a fuss... save yourself the trouble and park a few streets down among the neighboring houses, and give yourself a pat on the back for the walk to the door. Overall, this is a restaurant I will continue to frequent and enjoy.

My boyfriend and I just moved to the area so we thought we should check this place out. The service was excellent, however the quality of the food was exceptionally poor. We figured the food wouldn't be anything extraordinary but we we were at least hoping for some semi yummy, cheaper Japanese food. To be honest, I haven't had a meal this bad ever. Everything tasted like it had been frozen or from a box and the fish tasted very strange. We went in there starving and left starving because the food tasted so bad. Even the saki was bad. We never eat fast food but we would have been much more satisfied had we gone to mcdonalds. Don't waste your money here like we did. Sushi den is much more expensive but at least u get what u pay for and are leave satisfied.

One the best sushi places in town. My husband took me here for lunch for the first time(I think he's been holding out on me as he seemed to know his way around!). There are two kinds of sushi restaurants in Denver. Really good or really bad. Unfortunately there are more bad than good. Fontana sushi is outstanding. You must ask for the special items that are not on the regular menu. They treat you like family and appreciate your business. The prices are reasonable and won't empty your wallet like some others.

Not terrible, but with having Taki Sushi within walking distance, this was lackluster. I loved the ambiance; they have beautiful fish tanks surrounding their dining room, but the sushi was just...poor. I know, I know, we're in a landlocked state and what can one expect, but I shouldn't want to spit it up as soon as I put it in my mouth.

I ate some of the nigiri here. The quality was as expected. I suggest hitting up Go Fish for their handrolls, as you'll get approximately as much fish but with higher quality.

We came here a bit late on a Saturday night (9:30pm) of hopping around different places on foot, for small bites and drinks. They were quite empty, so we were seated and serviced right away. We got a few appetizers, sashimi, and a roll. The seafood Dynamite was okay, sashimi okay, and the roll was unmemorable . Hot Sake was nice, and they had 2 for 1 beers which was a plus.

Sushi was weirdly warm when it was delivered, and the fish tasted as if it were expired or left out. I rarely ever leave bad reviews ever, but I was extremely disappointed in this delivery and restaurant.

Just came across this place. I'm very picky when it comes to sushi. This place is great. Fresh fish, huge assortment, very friendly staff and super clean! Will be back for sure!

Delicious sushi! Love the Nemo roll. The yellow tail collar and seafood udon are also very good. Definitely recommend these items. The seafood udon uses miso soup as the base for the soup and has added spices. The flavor keeps you wanting more.

Two for one beers... Even on Saturday at 930pm, apparently! Not bad for a neighborhood sushi joint. Fish was good--we had mostly cooked stuff, but the raw seemed like high-quality fish as well. Their specialty apps and rolls were definitely something I would come back for--well presented and delicious. Stop in if you're in the neighborhood.

I grew up in Wash Park and had been driving past this place since I was a kid but didn't make my way in until last week. First off, the service in this place is fantastic: prompt, friendly, and informative. I've worked at some of the best sushi spots in Denver (including the dens) and have grown pretty accustomed to that caliber of food. This place definitely holds its own, and then some. If you like unagi, get the sweet dragon roll. It is literally the best eel I've ever had plus the presentation is totally adorable...and a little creepy. Anyway, try this place. And take the advice of the people who got delivery and skip it. Who gets sushi delivered in the first place?
