Chicken shawarma sandwich was not great at all. Cube pieces were not flavorful and lots of lettuce. The garlic sauce made it bearable.

There is almost never anyone in here and I have never had the same server twice. They used to have carpet tacked to the ceiling (until the health department made them take it down) and they often don't speak a lot of English. Despite what seem like obvious downsides, this is the best Syrian restaurant in town. This coming from a guy married to a Lebanese woman (we should hate it on principal, but we don't because its that good). The food is great. Get whatever you want because it is good. Amazingly, it used to be better. It must be under new management because it isn't as good now as it was 3 or 4 years ago, but it is still good. You get a lot of food for the price and everything is seasoned well. I recommend kafta, shawarma, or the hommos. The few times I have seen other diners in here, they are speaking arabic, so you know the food is authentic. Also, its good.

I've searched for restaurants like this in New York City, but I can't find anything thing that compares. My staple dish is the chicken shawarma. The hummus and baba ganoush are top notch. The pita is served warm. The falafel is decent. The kabobs, I think are okay, I can't remember. It has been so long since I've ordered anything other than the chicken shawarma. Service can be a little hit or miss depending on how busy it is. Keep in mind though this is a small family run business so sometimes they don't have a lot of help. 5 stars for the hummus, baba ganoush and chicken shawarma!

Wonderful, spice-laden food! Great service, lovely people. Try the homemade chai- careful, it's really sweet. You can ask for a less sweet version. I loved the moussaka on the vegan platter- yum!!

Damascus restaurant is Middle Eastern cuisine. This, by far, is my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in the Denver. The portions are hearty, the baba ghanoush and hummus are freakishly delicious and the food is not over, nor under, spiced. Iced-tea is a little weak. It is never terribly busy when I go. My only complaint is: several times I have ordered extra homemade pita and they reluctantly gave it to me. It's as if asking for more is unacceptable or wrong. One time they downright refused my request with the "we're extremely busy" answer, which soured me. Is there a pita limit? Can they not make more? Why would they refuse me? I am a paying customer and I need more pita. Please give me more pita. I will pay top dollar for more pita. I just need a little more fresh pita. Hook a sister up with some more pita please. OKthanksbye. If not in the mood for the dine-in experience, I suggest ordering ahead and pick up just the baba ghanoush and hummus 'to go.' You'll be glad you did.

The food was really good, but our waiter was unbelievably grumpy. He didn't crack a smile during our whole visit and actually walked away from our table WHILE I WAS TALKING TO HIM. Terrible service!

Great Hummus and Kafta! The Falafel was just ok and the service was a bit glum. Our waiter barely said two words to us the entire night. He did say thank you though. I may try some of the other Mediterranean restaurants on the same block to compare.

I ate here for the first time last weekend with several folks from India -- we all had vegetarian dishes, so I am not sure about the meat dishes, but the veggie offerings are very tasty (but a bit too light on the spice). The pitas are thin and warm. I will go back!

Just moved to Colorado from Florida and found this restaurant on Yelp and since it was close to Cherry Creek, we decided to give it a try. My daughter and I have now eaten here twice in 2 weeks! It's FABULOUS! The hummus appetizer was delicious, smooth and creamy, the pita bread hot and perfect, the shrimp appetizer, mmmmm! The salad had a light and refreshing dressing of vinegar and lemon, which was a perfect palate cleanser. The lamb kabobs and the oven roasted lamb were sublime, and the garlic dip, to die for!! We also had baklava and rosewater pudding for dessert and both were wonderful. My daughter has even said she would prefer to go there for her birthday dinner instead of the Capitol Grill!!! We have company coming into town for the next several weeks, and this restaurant will be a stop for each guest! Both the owner Yassir and his sister Amal (hope I spelled their names correctly) were gracious welcoming hosts. The restaurant is in an odd little plaza with a couple of other mid-eastern restaurants, but we probably won't try them, because Damascus is such a hit with us! The only thing I would suggest is a little lower lighting. Both times we were there it was quite bright.

IT'S A 3.5 STAR PLACE. The parking lot is atrocious but once you get pass that this place is very yummy. The hummus is so creamy and delicious. I could eat a vat of that. The baba ganoush was pretty good. The bf got the meat platter and made me order the lamb & beef shwarma even though I wanted to share. (but we did have a whole plate of leftovers the next day. The hummus got even better.) Honestly, the kafta kebob was amazing! Maybe my stars will go up when we come back next time because the fridge was broken so we couldn't get any of the specialty drinks. I dislike you loud talkeerrr. Your friends can hear you just fine.

Easily the best Baba Ghanoush I have ever had. It is worth the trip alone. I am also very happy to say that the recent renovations are awesome and make it to where I don't have to do take out. Easily 5 stars.

The absolute best hummus in Denver! New management is amazing and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Yasser is the best! My wife and I have enjoyed their hummus dozens of times, and have also had their falafel, chicken shawarma, and baked lamb. All of which were spectacular!

  • James H.

Eaten here twice now. The Hummus, as others have said, is unbelievably smooth and creamy. The Falafel is nice and crunchy on the outside and smells (and tastes) fantastic. The Kafta Kebob is amazing - it's motivated me to try a beef/lamb mixture next time I grill a burger. Last time we were there, we split a King Combo so I also had a taste of the Beef Shawarma - a dish I DEFINITELY would like to try again. This place really put me on a Middle Eastern cuisine kick so I'm hoping to find something good near my work, too.

I'd been a patron at Damascas since it opened in 1989. In the last few years, I'd only dined there 2-3 times as the food, service and atmosphere had greatly declined. Last night, my husband and I decided to give it another try and boy are we glad that we did! We were warmly greeted by Yasser, the son of the original owner. Yasser has brought life back into Damascas! The food was amazing - I'm already thinking about when I can return (we live 45 minutes away). Every dish popped with its own, unique flavor profile. We started with the hot fava bean appetizer. The beans were cooked with tomato, onions, and cumin, and we sopped up the lemon, olive oil broth with the pita bread that was served hot off the grill. The hummus was creamy and delicate, almost melting in our mouths. My husband ordered lamb kabobs that were served with a fresh, colorful salad. The lamb was very tender with that great, charred quality you always hope for with kabobs. I ordered the vegetarian sampler which exceeded my expectations. Everything was beautifully seasoned, from the falafels to the grape leaf to the baba ghanouj to the moussaka to the fetoush salad. The portions were very generous, and when I asked for a box for my leftovers, Yasser brought me two more fresh, hot pita breads to take home! We ended the meal with a sweet custard made with vanilla and pistachios. Heaven!

GREAT! and inexpensive. Tabbouleh salad was light and flavorful, and best felafel sandwich I've ever had: obviously home made, rather than the hard fried nuggets I have been accustomed to.

Ah Damascus you swim in a sea of Middle Eastern restaurants but yet you stand out to me. This place is hidden within a strip mall and presents itself with a decor that could only be described as "needing a little help." But with all of that aside it is still a great restaurant. First of all, the hummus is the best I have had. They do not skimp on the garlic nor the cumin on top which I think really helps it. The pita bread always come out nice and warm. Anytime my wife and I go we order the king combo (basically a little bit of everything) which is plenty for the two of us and at something close to $12 I believe, is a value that can't be beat. Don't go to some of the other restaurants on Colorado, go to Damascus.

I'm not sure if I'm hesitant to write this because I was bored from this restaurant's food or just this type of food in general. I had never had Middle Eastern food, let alone food from Syria and was super excited for the experience! But unfortunately, I was a little let down by the lack of flavor. Now the pita bread was fantastic, I can speak to that, and the homos was great but the other dishes in my Vegetarian Combo were not that spectacular. The falafel was okay, but I did not like the baba ghanouj, fatoush salad, or grape leaves and rice. The only thing that left me interested was the tabouleh which had many fantastic flavors. I was impressed by some of the appetizers and would recommend trying those, but we decided to just stick with the main courses because they seemed to be very filling. I also dig the decor of the place. It's different and a little kitchy but I really like it. The service was great in a different sense than the traditional "customer service" approach. The server was very serious faced but he took care of everyone well. Overall, I don't see myself going back but I totally welcome any suggestions for Middle Eastern food that might be a greater palate experience than this one.

Damascus ("City of Jasmin") is the capital of Syria! My experience in Damascus was amazing, so amazing I think I should hope on a plane and head out to experience more in Syria. Salaam :D) to all. The overall atmosphere, music, portray of culture, taste of the food and service makes me believe this is the place to get some darn good eats. Sure, one may come in and think otherwise, but don't be a fool! Don't judge a place unless you have tried it :). Their baba ghanoush has been probably the best one I have eaten, yet. Indeed, the BEST Middle Eastern food I have had. Good portions! Not bad pricing for what you get :). It took a while to get my food, but it was worth the wait. They kept bringing me pita bread. YUM!

Although the hummus and warm pita were great, the chicken shwarma in both the entree and sandwhich smelled bad and had no flavor at all, We were disappointed having had excellent shwarma in Syria and even in other places in Denver. On top of that, The service was not so friendly and the bathrooms smelled like sewer. Hopefully it was just a bad night there.

One of my favs around Denver. Babaghanoush is so good I'd like to roll around in it. The pita bread is always hot out of the oven, makes me drool. Love love love it..... Vegetarian plate is incredibly good.

Damascus is a bit of a conundrum. I have a hard time understanding the spread of reviews (3-5 stars), because if you just walked in and rolled the dice, I'm pretty sure you'd find some 1 or 2 star meals. Having said that, I keep going back. Maybe the ratings reflect that A) middle eastern food rocks, and B) we don't get good middle eastern food around here. Ergo, the do's and don'ts from my perspective: Do savor the fresh pita and homos and baba ghanoush. To my taste, the baba ghanoush in particular is very nice here - you really taste the roasted eggplant. Don't be in a hurry, 'cause they aren't. If you go with a laid-back mindset, you can have a pleasant, relaxed experience. Do try their appetizers. They have some good things - sausages, pita with a thyme-based spice, etc. Don't get excited about their fresh juices. Real, fresh mango juice is reason to get excited - but theirs is pretty bland. Disappointing. Do try their kabobs. Last time I was there I got the 'King Combo', and they were a highlight of the huge plate. Don't order their shwarma alone (by itself I mean). I believe there was both chicken and lamb shwarma on the combo, and it was pretty dry, and not too flavorful. There was other good things to perk it up though. Do try the dolmas - they are nice with a bit of the sour kick I like. Don't be a naysayer and avoid Damascus because of some pitfalls - Do check it out, but read all the reviews and go in prepared.

I've eaten at Damascus twice, and each time I have two main impressions: 1) The food is served hot, nicely spiced, with good texture, colorful and full of flavor. 2) The server is efficient and accurate, but rarely smiles. Syrian food is considered to be one of the tastiest cuisines, and after eating at Damascus restaurant, I definitely agree. I love middle eastern food, and Damascus serves very yummy versions of hummus (creamy), tabbouleh (packed with parsley and lemon), kebabs (lamb are tender and smoky), baklava (oozing with exotic spices and floral syrup) and spinach pie (literally, a warm pastry boat filled with spinach, lemon and pine nuts). Also, the pita at Damascus are hot, soft, fresh and the perfect picker-uppers for hummus and baba ghanoush. The plate portions are generous, and I always leave feeling stuffed! My husband has to finish my vegetarian plate. The falafel are freshly fried, but a little giant for my taste; but if you like giant falafel, these will satisfy you. I really wish the server would smile, though! At my last visit, I asked him for the baklava recipe and he joked with me, "come in tomorrow and I'll show you how to make it." I was so happy when he smiled, because he seems pretty glum. The decor at Damascus could use some freshening up. It looks like they recently got pretty new curtains, so that's a good start. If you're looking for hot, fresh and delicious Syrian food in Denver, I think you will enjoy the food at Damascus. It is definitely a step up from "fast" Mideast food restaurants.

Outstanding! Perfect pita Perfect hummus Perfect falafel Looks a little like a dive from the outside and it's not the Ritz on the inside, but no matter. . The service was great and the portions were large. The wife had the chicken 2 ways (Chicken Sultani: One skewer of chicken kabob and one of chicken kafta) and it was really good. I had the Syrian sausage, it was a little dry but still very tasty. I also had one of their fresh juices, strawberry/mango. Very good. Did I mention the falafel? Home made and perfect. Crispy and moist. The hummus was the best ever. Creamy, garnished with the best spices and oils and went perfectly with dinner. I've always wanted to try Damascus and I'm glad we did. Solid!

This food is deeelicious! The hummus tastes like butter - creamy with a little oil and spices...so delicious! Usually when we go we get the falafel, dolmades, something new on the appetizer menu, or we split one of their plates since it's enough to feed two people. This is a small hole in the wall with great food. I almost gave four stars because sometimes we've had to wait quite a while for our food, or water, but when I think of the hummus, I just have to give it five stars. Also, it's super cheap. Down side: no booze!

Smelt like discount cleaner. Food was very bland. Olive oil was cheap. For the same money, go to Marrakech next door. Not a good representation of the amazing food Syria has to offer.

I don't get it. The place is a pig sty. I hate when owners don't reinvest in their properties. Who is in charge of cleaning? Ambiance? I have to assume if you don't care about the dining area, you're likely skimping in quality food ingredients as well. And my shawarma meat was old and tough. Won't be back until at least a cleaning and remodel.

Now, this restaurant may not have the finest decor, or the fastest service, but when it comes down to it, it's really all about the food anyway, right? And the food here is delish! The pita is really good, homemade it seems. The hummus is outstanding, some of my favorite around. I love the chicken schwarma and the kaftka. Both are seasoned so well. The schwarma was a bit dry, but the kaftka was on point. The spinach and cheese pies for apps are the way to go. And the rice! How could I forget to mention the rice. I literally crave it. Everything I've ever had here is so good. The prices aren't so bad either.

I yelped, and then my hopes were set SOOOOO high. Yes, the Humous was tasty, and the pitas were fresh. The Fatoush was good, but I found myself picking the onions out. For $3.45 the serving was enough for 4 for an appetizer. You can't save Fatoush you know. The toasted pitas get soggy. "Tell me what ...... is." "oh, we're out of that" This go round went round at least 3x. Then there was the dessert, I can't even remember the name. Kanafi? Described to me as shredded phyllo with custard. She didn't mention the bonus mold spores. Unfortunately I didn't find the mold until I had eaten 3/4 of the dessert, it was on the bottom. Blechh!!! "oh, I think that's pistachios" she said. "um, no. I'm quite certain that's mold" "Pistachios" she insisted. "you eat it" I wanted to say. I don't argue, but I know what pistachios look like. And I know what mold looks like. (I should've gone with my instincts. It didn't taste fresh) It was ALMOST a good meal.

First off let me say that I grew up in Israel (neighboring Syria) and I definitely know what good middle eastern food should taste like - this is not it!!! (politics aside) Whenever I hear the word shawarma I start salivating uncontrollably - In a lafa pita it's one of my all time favorite foods! And so, after hearing raving reviews from some co-workers I was very excited to check it out. I went there once for the shawarma sandwich, which was so bad I decided to never go there again!

  • Michael W.

I'm cutting to the chase on this one. The hummus was a great starter, right on the money. The Meat Combo (I think that's what it called) which was essentially a mountain of lamb, chicken and beef over rice. Very good and you get a lot of food. Parking is not great, so beware the tow truck. The interior was dark but I actually enjoyed that aspect, especially on a hot summer day. No 5 star bathrooms or anything like that and you might have to wave a few flies away while you eat so be ready. The service is prompt and friendly (extra points for treating me like a regular person even though I was in my Air Force uniform.) I really enjoyed everything and I can't wait to come back and try the hookah place that's next door.

  • Lauren D.

Food here is awesome! However, service not-so-much. It is clear that there are 2 very friendly people doing the job of at least what should be 4-5 in the dining and cashier area and that they are hauling major ass all around the restaurant - with a huge smile and no attitude none the less! The homos and baba were delicious and my chicken kabob was perfection. Maybe if you go at a slower time than a Friday night, you won't be as grumpy about it, because they are very nice and helpful. But yes food = great! May be more of a take out venue for us for a bit, and yes, we will drive all the way over there for it from NW Denver, because it's that good.

  • Katie L.

Be advised, they bring your hummus out before your meal, but you don't get anymore with your meal unless you order an additional $5-$6 appetizer. Don't make the same horrifying mistake we did and eat it all beforehand. The bf and I both ordered King combos. I was not really impressed with any of mine and took most of it home. The bf liked his ok and I'll agree the chicken was juicer than some other joints in town. The gyros were not crispy and delicious so that was saddening. The hummus was the best part. Super creamy and scrum. Service was friendly enough and the atmosphere is...interesting. If I were to eat somewhere in this strip of middle eastern eateries it would be at House of Kabob. Sorry Damascus :(.

  • Amy R.

Totally loved this place, if only for the terrific service and amazing *warm* extremely fresh pita bread. We split a fattoush salad that was nice and refreshing on a really hot day, baba ganoush that was also good and a mixed plate which included kebabs and several types of meat as well as hummus and salad. That was too much food as the portions were very generous. Service was very attentive and we left happy.

  • Hayley G.

mmm... Damascus. This is pretty much my favorite Mediterranean food restaurant in the Denver area, only slightly ahead of Ali Baba (sorry, Ali Baba still wins on the baba ghanoush). I recommend the vegetarian plate, and all of the sandwiches. The hummus, falafel or baba ghanoush sandwiches are all amazing.. and incredibly affordable. I haven't really tried the meaty stuff yet, but I assume it's equally as delicious. Best hummus around. And the baklava is killer.

  • Jed Z.

I order a king combo, some vegetable kebabs, and strawberry milk, and I'm as happy as they come. Super delish! The baba ganoush is unique and wonderful. I've never had its equal. If you're lucky, you'll get fresh out of the oven pita. I never come any more, though, because the service is so slow that my kids can't stand it. Even without kids, assume a time committment. Hey, if you are looking for quality time with a significant other, what's the hurry...

This restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere, good service, and decent food. We shared baba ghanouj and chicken kafta pita wraps with lemonade on our most recent visit. We have eaten here 10 times in the last 10 years. I give it a 3 star rating because I like it but can't quite love it. Worth a stop. Baba Ghanouj is my favorite here.

While visiting my sister, she told me that Damascus was in her regular rotation of restaurants. We grabbed take-out and the place was pretty busy. I ordered the chicken kabob pita for myself along with a three other sandwiches. I wish I had read the reviews of this place because for some odd reason, we didn't order any hummus. My chicken kabob pita was average- sounds like it isn't the best choice on the menu. Our total was right around 22 dollars for four sandwiches so value was decent. I'm sure I'll be checkin' out Damascus when I'm back in Denver- and I'll be sure to try the hummus and avoid the average chicken kabob pita.

Somehow I managed to drag my leftovers out for two days. Man, they give you a lot of food. I love this place. As others have written, their hummus is beyond compare. I want to jump in a big vat of it and wade in the wonders of tahini. Later on a Friday night we wandered in to a pretty packed restaurant and the two ladies there were hustling! Our server ended up being totally charming and cute and kept bringing us warm, soft pillows of pita. Syrian sausage is delicious, but it's hard to pass up their shwarma when you see that rotisserie of deliciousness just quietly rotating in the back. If you want a super cheap meal, go for their sandwiches which are awesome. I'd love to give this place five stars but their bathroom was so gross I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Lack of ambiance is one thing, but over the top icky bathrooms is quite another.

Best hummus in all of Denver It may not look like much from the outside but, among the myriad Middle Eastern restaurants in Denver, Damascus stands out for the quality of their food. I honestly don't understand why this place isn't more popular. Well... maybe I do. To be completely honest the service is a little slow when dining in, and in the "your way right away" culture of today maybe that's too much to bear for some. But if time's a factor then take-out is the way to go. Personally, I think the food here is worth the wait, and besides the staff is friendly. Of course the hummus with fresh-baked pitas are not to be missed. My other tops picks from their menu have to be the Cheese Pies, the Hummus with Beef Shawarma, and, for those who can't decide, the King Combo which has everything from tabouleh to shawarma. I'm also a fan of their "Arabic Coffee", which beats the pants off of the sickly-sweet concoctions to be found at trendy coffee chain stores any day.

    (4)
  • Brett G.

A plus - they make their own pitas. The hummus was tasty, flavorful, creamy. Unfortunately, I didn't get as much as it as I would have liked. I definitely would enjoy some of their entrees - didn't have a chance to get them, but while I was waiting for takeout, the food looked good coming from the kitchen. Interior was a little tired and dark, but I imagine this is the type of place you go for the food, not necessarily the ambiance. The staff we interacted with for a short time were friendly; and the takeout was ready in a hurry.

Service here is friendly and inviting. The place is kind drab- not appealing at all to the eyes, but it's clean and the great hummus more than makes up for all the rest. I've only gotten the chicken schwarma with hummus the few times I've been there. What can I say! The chicken is so good and the hummus is really creamy and tasty. I don't want anything else! But I've seen my friends try other dishes and they are always happy. I also highly recommend their mint tea which is fabulous and their pitas are very doughy and warm. So good! It's a little pricey...so I don't go here very often. I would expect the atmosphere to be a little more classy for the prices that are on the menu. The chicken schwarma plate is $11 or $12, so once you add in your drink and an appetizer of falafel, as well as the tip, you spend close to $20 a person. I don't mind too much since I usually have plenty of food to take home with me, but like I said, I would expect it to be a little more swanky place for the price. I still think it's a fun treat and recommend it to anyone I know that is looking for good middle eastern fare.

Really good pita. They make it on-site, and it usually comes out hotter than you'd image it can be. Really good hummus. So creamy, so delicious. Sandwiches are good. It's probably the pita that makes it so good. I like the all-syria all-the-time decor here. Syrian Tourism Board strikes again!

It has been awhile since my last review, but this place definitely motivated me to login to yelp and get typing. First off, this is the kind of joint that I've been looking for....local, nowhere near LoDo, unassuming, and just plain old great food. Sure, the decor could use some updating, but it's got character, right? Service could not be friendlier and the food was really good. Portions were huge and we were full after scarfing the tasty hummus and pitas. If you are looking for a great meal and an alternative to your usual vanilla lunch or dinner joints, just head south on Colorado Blvd and give Damascus a shot.

Though many of the other reviews take a star away for the dive-yness of this place, I love the Damascus. I work just a few blocks away, and I choose it over any other restaurant in the surrounding area. I am Lebanese, and the Damascus cooks do a great job making real, good, authentic Middle Eastern food. It may be empty often times, and it make look like a dive, but go in. It's very good. The wait staff are nice (as long as you don't ask how the cook makes something), the pitas are great, and the rice is the best rice I have ever ordered at any restaurant.

When I think of hummus (or humus, or homos, or however you like to spell it), I think of Damascus. This is the kind of hummus that is so good, it is one of the three items you take on a desert island good. And, maybe the *one* item you take if that's all you are allowed. And the pita are freshly made and served warm. Oh, and they serve other stuff too. I had the meat combo platter that was balanced nicely with veggies and cucumber sauce. An unpretentious place with a relaxing atmosphere.

Yesterday, we made our way down into Denver and, of course, used it as an excuse to have a good meal. We had a hankering for some Middle Eastern food, so based on the previous Yelp reviews, we decided to hit up Damascus. We got there early (which, turns out was a really good move) and were the only table seated. We started with some finger food apps of a cheese pie, a plate of assorted pickles, and a dish I believe was called managish(?). The last dish was a fresh pita topped with olive oil, sesame, and thyme. It was good, but a little odd to me. I think it was a texture thing, because the thyme was so thick on top. The cheese pie was great. I got the King Combo, and boy, is it named correctly. It came with a little of everything. Tabouleh, salad, hummous, baba ganoush, falafel, rice, dolmades, and a huge assortment of meats: lamb, beef, and chicken, all in shwarama and/or kebob versions. Phew! I literally lol'ed when the plate was delivered. The end result: a mixed bag. The highs: The baba ganoush (eggplant puree) and dolmade (stuffed grape leaves) were some of the best I ever had. The tabouleh (cold bulgar wheat salad made with tomatoes and fresh herbs) was also great. I hate it when places are too heavy handed on the mint in their tabouleh, and here it was a perfect marriage of mint and parsley. The chicken, both in shwarama and kebob forms, was flavorful and juicy. The hummous, both in presentation and flavor, was perfect. And the homemade pita, fresh and hot, was great. The lows: The falafel bummed me out. It was cooked PERFECTLY. A nice thick crunchy crust on the outside, moist on the inside, and not at all greasy. Problem was, it had almost no flavor. A real shame considering how well it was prepared. The beef shwarama was pretty forgettable, but not bad. The pita, for as good as it was hot, became like a piece of cardboard when it cooled down to room temp. But I don't fault Damascus for that; next time I just have to eat faster! When I was stuffed to the gills, my plate looked like I had hardly touched it. At $11.95, mine was one of priciest on the menu, but considering I have at least two more meals here, it's a bargain. I'm just disappointed in myself for not leaving room for some of the baklava that Jessica raved about. The decor has been described in previous reviews. Posters of Syria (that look like they're right out of the Syrian Board of Tourism) on the walls, tapestries on the ceiling, and not a whole lot else in terms of ambiance. Service was pretty good (as it should be when you're the only table in a restaurant). As we ate our apps, a few tables came filing in. By the time we left, the place was slammed! The two servers were running around in a frenzied rush as more and more people filed through the door, so we didn't linger after the bill was paid. The place is pretty small (maybe 12 tables), so keep that in mind if you want to go with a group during peak hours. Also, the parking lot is a bit of a nightmare when it fills up. You may want to park across the street and walk over if it looks busy. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some tasty leftovers to eat. Cheers!

Ahhh....salaam and welcome! Just off the gutter lane of south Colorado Boulevard you'll step across the Mediterranean and into the aromatic and enchanting palette of Damascus Restaurant. I have driven by it many a time always thinking "I have to remember to try that place." And this 'not so secret' Syrian joint may come as a surprise to you if you've never been here, just as it did to me. When you walk in here, don't be fooled by the simple handpainted walls, dingy atmosphere, the travel agency posters of the Syrian capital, or the Salvadoran cook in the kitchen. This place serves some of the best Middle Eastern food Denver has to offer. And if you think it needs a facelift, you might check your mirror because you probably do too. You're not eating the walls anyway and if it were twice the price, then I'd complain about about it's atmosphere. The menu is filled with all the usual middle east eats you'd expect, but you won't go wrong ordering just about anything. The food is made on site, it's fresh, delicious and served hot. I picked out a few safe menu finds on my first visit and placed my order with the friendly Jordanian waitress. Then I almost peed my pants when she nonchalantly threw me this steaming basket of pita bread and placed an offering of the world's best hummus (spelled homos, I swear) down beside it. Instantly, goosebumps arose and I had the feeling like it had just been made for me. And it had. It was like when Mom used to make fresh tortillas every morning and no sooner was it off the comal (griddle) and into my mouth. Fantastic! What is it with the world's flatbreads? I have yet to find one, when made fresh, that I don't enjoy. And this... this was perfect. The "homos" on my tongue was like heaven. It's texture divine. I mean, how could it have been made any better? I really don't know! The spices were balanced with care, not too garlicky or like that gimmicky "gourmet" gunk you find in the grocery stores - you know what I mean - that red pepper, black bean, over-aerated spackle-textured... crap! Oy! This is oceans away from that! Anyway, to keep myself from fingering the entire bowl of hummus and eating it all in one fell swoop, I judiciously tore pita chunks and dipped them into the hummus as if it were communion. The whole time I found myself looking over my shoulder at other diners, wondering if I was eating it too fast and ravenously. It was hard to control myself. Thankfully, Miss Jordan soon returned with my aroma-tickling main course - spicy and piquant chicken Kafta and Kebab served on a bed of fragrant Jasmine rice infused with tiny durum noodles. Accompanying it was a traditional and yet flavorful yogurt sauce and a fresh decor of tomato and lettuce. The Kebab outshone the Kafta by a smidgen in flavor, but both were alive with a charbroiled taste and fulfilling gustation. I could not eat all the rice, mostly because by now I had eyed dessert - it sitting coyly in a glass case at the back of the restaurant waiting for me like a quiet temptress. As I prepared to leave, not sure if I would go for any dessert, I approached the counter to pay. Then she glistened at me. A gem glittering and luring me into its charm in a dervish-like fashion. I realized how fresh looking it was and simply could not resist. Where was my restraint on this trip I say? Anyway, am I glad I didn't hold back. Perfectly portioned and incredibly decadent, it's sweet rose water carefully danced on the flaky layers of the Baklava like dew on a leaf after a mountain rainfall. The flavors and texture harmoniously played together in this perfect little gift. It was a magical carpet ride that ended a most satisfying encounter into Damascus! Go to Damascus Restaurant for the hummus or the baklava, if nothing else. Spread the word about this place, it's worth sharing and it's an experience for which you'll praise Allah!

I'm writing this review as I'm eating takeout from Damascus. I don't usually write reviews (although I should...since I read them so much) but this meal has just inspired me to get online & give back some karma. I'm eating the King Combo and savoring every single bite. I HIGHLY recommend this dish from Damascus to anyone who either is indecisive or doesn't necessarily know what to order when it comes to middle eastern food. It has a little bit of everything (6 different meats, rice, hummus, baba ganoush, pita, salad, tabouli - mmmm). It's a ton of food - my wife & I always share it and usually have leftovers. The atmosphere isn't necessarily romantic enough to take a 1st date to, but it's definitely quaint and authentic. And the food is to die for. It's also very affordable (that is, if you share the King Combo with someone - I think that's all I've ever ordered).

I think this place has the best Baba Ganoush and Hummus in Denver - just incredible! The service can be a little hit or miss, but overall this is a pretty damn good place.

A true classic in my book. I have eaten here, on average, once a week for the last 4 years and have never been let down. The service is much improved over the last year, and the staff is always pleasant and the food does not disappoint. I appreciate that the food is never exactly the same from one time to the next, but the consistency is great and the quality is far above most other middle eastern restaurants in town. I have tried everything on the menu (minus a few of the apps), but the Vegetarian Combo is my all-time favorite. I'm a regular, and everyone there knows my name and my standard order, which is my own personal preparation of the Veggie Combo that ?I've honed over time. Other standouts include the chicken kabob plate, hummus w/ schwarma and falaffel plate. For a special treat, try the lamb shank... It's a true experience. As has been mentioned by the other reviewers, the pitas are homemade and out of this world. The location and atmosphere leave something to be desired, but that's part of the experience. Overall, Damascus is a perfect 10 in the authentic ethnic eats category and a place that everyone should try at least once.

We are very sad that we do not live in Littleton any longer. Mainly because we were 3 minutes away from Damascus and they have amazing food for very good prices! The pita and hummus is amazing. Chicken shwarma is also a favorite. Good service.

This was our first time having Middle Eastern food that didn't come out of a plastic container from the grocery store, and it was pretty darned good. I'm no hummus connoisseur, but it truly was the highlight of the evening and the best I've ever had. I did think that the main dishes were somewhat forgettable. I'd walk back to the restaurant for that hummus, though! Edit: We visited a second time, and I ordered the Okra Stew. Wow. I think I must've made a poor choice the first time when I picked my entreé, because the stew was absolutely excellent. Bravo!

If you're looking for incredible middle-eastern food at a very reasonable price than look no further than Damascus Restaurant! Their hommos here is to die for. And with delicious sandwiches starting at around $4.00+tax it really can not be beat! The staff is also very friendly and the food comes fast so if you're in a hurry for lunch, no problem.

I love Middle Eastern food - it's in my blood. Whenever I get a craving, Damascus is usually where I'll head. It's very hole in the wall-ish like many of the glorious Vietnamese joints on Federal Blvd, but if you ask me, that's all part of the charm. Sometimes I like to go out for ambiance, sometimes I just want solid, authentic ethnic cuisine, without regard for what's hanging on the wall or the tone of the lighting. If you're in to Middle Eastern food or would like to try it, Damascus is one to add to your list.

So good! I would give them 5 stars, but last time our waitress was a little preoccupied and messed up our orders. The food is great, everything I've had has been delicious, the hummus is to die for and the pita is delicious. This is definately a great place to get middle easter food.

Okay - quick geography quiz: Damascus is the capital of what country? It's Syria but if you didn't know, don't worry - the restaurant is covered with tourism posters for the country. It looks like a typical storefront restaurant until you go in. Tapestries on the ceiling, artwork on the wall - you feel like you've literally left the US when you step inside. The food is wonderful. All the standards you'd hope for are there - grape leaves, hummus, shawarma - and they're out of this world. I typically am not a big fan of hummus but I make a meal of just the hummus at Damascus. It's served with fresh, warm pita bread - YUM! The portions are generous enough to satisfy even the biggest eaters. This was my second visit but I forgot about the portion sizes so we ordered appetizers. With two appetizers (not counting the hummus which was included with the meals) and entrees, our group of three had more food than we could finish. The only downside to my visit was the fact that they were extremely understaffed - there was one waiter and a cook. To his credit, nothing stayed in the kitchen long enough to get cold but it led to long waits for other diners.

Although I don't make it to this part of town often, I recently found myself visiting Damascus for a late lunch. I have been craving a good falafel sandwich in Denver since leaving San Francisco 7 years ago. (Ali Baba's Cave in SF ruined me: it's been my falafel yardstick ever since. I'll have to visit Damascus again to consider adding a 5th star, as an Ali Baba comparison may not be fair for Denver restaurant.) Damascus gets it right. The falafel balls are generously sized, they have just the right amount of crunch and taste fresh. Compare this to those grape-sized, all-crust-no-chickpea pellets Denver's lesser Middle Eastern places serve up. The pita bread was tasty, warm and fresh, yet it didn't get in the way of the main ingredients' flavors. Service was attentive, prompt and very friendly. But, I differ on service reviews to folks who have visited during busy times.

A friend suggested this little strip mall gem for a late dinner, and it was a fabulous discovery. The Best. Hummus. Ever. Seriously, don't know how they do it, but I will dream about it for many months to come. The menu is well-rounded for Mediterranean fare, with many meat, chicken, and vegetarian options. The ambiance is classic for a small, independent restaurant - I found it quaint and charming, in a dive-y kinda way, but it could be perceived as a bit worn. Staff was friendly, authentic, and attentive.

Good food. Inexpensive. Generous portions. A hole-in-the-wall location, but clean. Friendly and attentive staff. Great hummus and lamb. If you are looking for good Syrian food for a reasonable price, this is the place.

Read the reviews, was hungry and super excited--- So sad to say that four co-workers and I had a terrible experience here today. We were given 1 1/2 hours for our lunch break, which should have been sufficient time to have a meal and return to our office. Apparently a new cook was working today, and only one waitress was on duty. After waiting for more than 45 minutes to get our main meal we requested the items to be boxed to go so that we could make it back to work on time. We had the 'homos' and baba ganoush, which was very yummy--however, the pitas (which were more like very hot tortillas) were a disappointment-NOT homemade....and.....my friend was half way through her pita when she noticed MOLD on the underside. No apology from the waitress when this was pointed out, nor a discount on our meals. We returned late to work with boxed food which was not up to par. The falafel I had left a bad taste in my mouth. Others stated their 'king' meal was not good either. We won't be returning. I wish better luck to those that try this place.

Humus and bread were good. Meat combo was average and so was the service. The place is noisy (I think it was the heater) and not very clean (3 dirty paper napkins out of 5...)

I've been to this place few times on my multiple visits to Denver. If you're looking for Arab food, just ask for Colorado Blvd in Denver. Just off of I-25, there's a few Arab places on Colorado Blvd., Damascus is definitely not the best, but for its price, one of the best. I had chicken shawarma platter with hummus and mint tea. There's an Arab grocery store next door as well.

This place has phenomenal service and food! I went after reading their review in 5280 and was surprised at how much their food exceeded my expectations. Make sure you get the hummus, preferably your body weight because you're going to want to eat it for days.

Our food was delicious! We were served the smoothest humus I've ever had. It was delightful! The Lentil Soup was perfect. I also had the Lamb Pie--my vocabulary fails to come up with the proper words. It was a lovely spice blend in a soft and fresh dough with a creamy base. Heavenly! My daughter had the Falafel Sandwich and Fries. They too were scrumptious! The waiter was attentive and kind. I look forward to going back and trying one of their desserts!

If I could, I would exist solely on hummus, baba ganoush, and falafel. I am forever on the hunt for authentic, tasty Middle Eastern food - and Damascus showed up in a Yelp search one day - so we decided to try it. I typically lean towards Lebanese (it's what I know!) but Damascus is Syrian (obviously), and very close to that. Firstly, the service was incredibly friendly. The young man who seated and served us was upbeat and seemed to really enjoy his job - which honestly took the experience over the top for me. The restaurant is definitely no-frills, but his awesome approach to customers and the food will have us coming back. The food was excellent - I ordered the vegetarian platter and my boyfriend ordered hummus with lamb - both were good sized portions for a reasonable price. The hummus and baba were both phenomenal - creamy and full of flavour. Their bread is made there and it, too, was excellent. The falafel had a perfectly crispy (not overcooked) exterior and a soft centre, and the salad was dressed with just enough dressing and sumac. Everything seemed very fresh - which is imperative with Middle Eastern food. Overall, I was impressed with this little 'hole in the wall' type place - I will definitely return. Thanks, Damascus!

Damascus Restaurant is outstanding! My mom and I came here yesterday, it is a tricky place to find, it doesn't have as much signage as nearby restaurants. Your best bet is to put it in your GPS if you aren't familiar with the area. It is pretty small on the inside, just a few patrons were there around dinner time. Upon entering, I was greeted by a friendly waitress and ordered Mujahara to start. I have never had it before but it sounded like a good vegan option for a part time vegan like myself. It was sooo good! When mom finally found the place and joined me we decided to split the lamb kabob. A few minutes after ordering our server brought the hummus and salad which come with the entree. The dressing on the salad was like nothing I have ever tasted before. The hummus was topped with beautiful oil and spices. A few minutes later, two large kabobs arrived. The lamb meat was out of this world, so good! The peppers and onions on the skewers complimented the flavors just right. It was seasoned to perfection. If you want some outstanding authentic Middle Eastern food, come here.

I love Middle Eastern and Mediterranean so I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur. This is the best that I've had yet and would have given it a 6 star rating if I could have! The baba ghanoush and hummus were amazing and the pita is homemade. The lamb roast won me over though! Well seasoned and so tender! They also have this amazing garlic paste that looks like Greek yogurt but it's so much better! The service was so great and friendly too. Just do it!

  • Andrea K.

Hummus was good. The salad was a little different- just the seasoning used on it was not what I expected. I had the lamb kebabs and they were a tad overcooked. I like my lamb medium rare and I guess I should have said so. It made them a bit too dry. I didn't think the sauce served on the side was very flavorful. I like some heat and a bit more seasoning (salt). The rice was very good. The pitas are flat and pretty large and pretty good. All in all, it would not be my first choice to return.

I was tricked by Yelp. The prices on the menu available through Yelp are totally incorrect. The food is pretty good here for sure, but they don't give the portions that some other restaurants do. It would also be nice if they would give you some dipping sauces for your meats. The people who work there are very friendly though.

While this place isn't fancy by any means, if you want GOOD Middle Eastern food. THIS is the place. My husband and I live on the other side of the state, and when we visit Denver, we usually try to get in a Middle Eastern meal because it is my husband's favorite. The last few times we have been trying different places. All were okay, but when we stumbled upon the reviews here, we went for it. This is one of the only restaurants that have cabbage leaves and Kibbi. Delicious!! They didn't disappoint. This is now our go to place when we are visiting Denver. We will be back.

My husband and I had dinner here. We had ordered hummus for the appetizer and the waitress informed us that our entrees would come with a side of hummus already. I'm a huge fan of hummus and thought, well if there are left overs we can have them for lunch so we ordered the hummus anyway. I'm so glad that we did because it was delicious. We had one big plate of hummus, and two small plates. We ended up having all of it! Next we were served a side salad. There was really nothing special about the salad. For our entrees... I had the Mousaka and my husband had the baked lamb. Both entrees were served with rice. To be honest, although a veterinarian meal, the Mousaka was far more tastier then the lamb. My husband agreed. He had the lamb shank there several times and was disappointed that they did not have that anymore. We also had the baklava and some hot tea. Stand stuff here. 3 stars I will give my Mousaka 5 stars for the flavor and portion size. I had enough for lunch the next day and it heated up perfectly. 3 Star to the baked lamb. 3 stars for the salad. 4 stars for the hummus. Finally, 3.5 stars for the service. We did have to wait a while for our drinks, boxes, and the check. We may be back for the Mousaka. ;-)

Wonderful little family owned restaurant! The falafel is delicious and just the right crunch, the hummus is smooth and the desserts are amazing. Did I mention they have won some awards at the Taste of Denver? Prices are very reasonable and the service is just great! I really enjoy speaking to Mahmoud Kassir and his wife about life in Syria and life in the United States. They are so genuine and inspiring. You are definitely in for a treat!

Had a meat plate and my girlfriend had the vegetarian plate. Both were really good and I found myself sneaking bites from her. I wish it wasn't so far from downtown as I would love to come here more often. Definitely a place to go again if I find myself going out that way. Service was prompt and the food came quickly.

Everything was so perfect here! A friend and I came in for a late lunch and shared the vegetarian platter. It was quite big, both of us were satisfied. Everything tasted unbelievable! On a trip with some girlfriends and stumbled upon this gem hidden away in suburban denver. The staff was incredibly welcoming, the decor cute with its hint at Syrian (and other middle Eastern/African) heritage. After a day of hiking up the hills we were starving and the abundance of grilled kabobs hit all the right spots. Between the 8 of us we ordered almost everything on the menu, chicken, lamb, salmon, beef and it was all delicious! Because of every single thing we ate was amazing, I'd say just go ahead and order what you'd like no point in breaking it down here.

Very tasty and pretty-looking food. We ordered a Arabic sausage sandwich and chicken shawarma for a quick lunch. The sandwiches are only $6-7 and they were prepared very fast. The server was very fast and patient. He even wrote down the name of the album he was playing for me when I inquired about it. I would definitely come back and explore other dishes on the menu.

Hello! My name is Mademoiselle LIMA MONKEY! I came to Damascus and the food was epic! I had something that was kind like a skinny pie with cheese in the middle. They also had a spinach version and a couple meat versions. I would definitely recommend this dish to anyone as it is very tasty. My mother loved the baba ghanoush and pita and says she would eat it again many many times. My father also enjoyed his falafel sandwich which in my opinion looked very tasty! I would definitely come back again and I am sure we will. If you end up deciding to go here I hope you have a good experience and wish to come back again too! - Sincerely, Mademoiselle LIMA MONKEY!

I wish Yelp allowed 3 1/2 stars because that would be more accurate. On the one hand it was some of the best hummus and stuffed grape leaves I've ever had but when my kabob sampler arrived it was too dry to eat. The atmosphere was nice and the service was adequate.

I've become a regular here, because the food is amazing and the atmosphere is comfortable. The owner is a smart business man with a menu that offers something for everyone. So I've not been here in ages, and before it was good food, and questionable service and long wait. Things have changed for the better, and the food... WOW! The hummus is smooth as silk, the salads look fresher, the coffee was unbelievable - they added a cinnamon stick and fresh cardamom that made it awesome right to the tasty sweet mud at the bottom. The rice, no surprise, awesome. The yogurt was fresh and tasty, and now there's an excellent selection of desserts. The mint tea was a production as well - cinnamon, lemon and a slice of fresh ginger made it almost into a chai! The best part, Yassir, he rules. The descendant of the original owners, he and his family now are driving this place to certain success. I'll be back. :^)

  • Melissa K.

Have been there twice since the original owner took it back. The food is OUTSTANDING! I had the vegan plate and everything was FANTASTIC! The fresh fruit juices are delicious and refreshing. The "made in front of you from scratch" chai was the best ever on a cool day! My partner is a non veg and he enjoyed his chicken and hummus, and the falafel plate. And the freshly made pita bread is AMAZING! This is the BEST Syrian/Middle Eastern place EVER now...puts others to shame. Get down there and enjoy!

This place used to be awesome, but now that it is under new management the food is terrible and way over priced... I paid $21.50 for 2 sandwiches and a hommos appetizer which I promptly tossed directly into the garbage can! Lettuce is brown and shriveled and the cucumber and other ingredients that used to make these sandwiches so good are totally absent. I don't know what happened to Zach and his family, but I'm sure the "New/Original Management" will milk his great reviews for a while before people discover this hidden gem is now just as horrible as the strip mall it sits in would lead you to believe that it is. Don't east your time or money at this dump! Just go to Jerusalem's at least that will never change. B)

Dee-lish!! I hadn't been in years so wasn't sure what to expect but we will definitely go back soon. The baba ganoush and lentil soup are highlights. We had baked lamb and a vegetarian plate. They are opening one in Castle Rock soon and will start selling the hummus as Happy Camel hummus in stores. Oh, and don't miss the chai. Like a dessert by itself.

Damascus is solidly good. It used to be good back in the early 2000s, and years ago I recall it sort of sliding downward. Well, that's not the case anymore. We've gone twice. The first time I had the vegan plate, which was outstanding. Today I had the falafal sandwich and lentil soup. Both were super dreamy and just pure yum. The pita comes out hot and fresh. My dining partner got the chicken shwarma, which was super amazing. The menu is clearly marked with vegetarian and vegan items, if that's your thing. The service we have had both times has been super nice and friendly. I'm not sure what people mean by the servers not speaking English. The sign outside says they are under new management with the original owners. They are doing something right. YUM! The thing I will say is that we went once on a Friday night, and the guy from the House of Kabob/market got mad at us for parking near his store. They said they would tow us, and I believe they would have. It was just kind of ugh and rude, but not a reflection on Damascus. The parking lot is kind of tight. Just an fyi.

Eat here. Really good place, with enough food to match the prices. Best baba ghanoush I've ever had, as is the hummus (it's unbelievably smooth). Good, fresh pita too. Can't go wrong with anything here; I highly recommend the moussaka or arabic sausages (which they seem to run out of frequently, which is one reason I'm taking off a star). The pies, grape leaves, and lamb are also some of the better I've had for sure. The only thing I can't recommend is the falafel, which is dry and flavorless (other reason for four stars). Otherwise, do yourself a favor and eat here, I've been a few times now and is my go to for anything middle eastern.

With the myriad of Mediterranean places on Colorado, a place needs to make an impression to stand out. Unfortunately Damascus fails to provide anything extraordinary. The hummus and pita and mint tea were my favorites.

Just do it!

Fresh, hot, and comforting. The service was good and we had a nice conversation with our waiter. I plan on coming back often

He is always there and always awesome to chat with! I'm a consumer of anything vegan, and there are plenty of V options! The lentil soup is the best in Denver.

YUM!

Service was very attentive and we left happy.

mmm...

  • Stephanie L.
