Great beers! All of them are sour so make sure you are a fan or your willing to explore. I had a couple of tasters and I went with the guava. Great beer and recommendations made by our bartender. Friendly service and plenty of seats available for large parties, if your waiting for a reservation at acorn this is a great stop!

Finally got in tonight after a bunch of rigamaroll. I had put this in my GPS after using my Yelp app to get me the address. My cell service was shit in the mountains and it was getting late. I drove right by 'The Source'. The building that houses Crooked Stave is pretty cool and was filled with a few hundred downtown 20-30 somethings. Most of the shops are pretty basic and there are maybe 10 total. think NoDo in a building, not on a few streets. A beeline to the back and I was in Brettanomyaces utopia. I have been meaning on getting out here and used the excuse that it was only 10 miles off course from my hotel to stop over. I initially stopped by another great provider of beer and asked what to have because I could not locate CS. The bartender politely pointed out the window and explained I was tens of yards away. Good on her. I rolled into CS knowing that I wanted some now and some to go. Some Surette and whatever else I could get my hands on. I had a few tasters (usually run $2) and decided I wanted to get a sixer to go. I was initially planning on a case, but will be in town for a bit longer so I cooled my jets. I got my six and it was $48 before tip. Whoa! I was not expecting that, but I know what I am getting and $7-8 a bottle is worth it. You can age these if you are so good at beer that you don't have to drink it now or you can just be like me and throw that pinky in the air, raise your glass and remove your monocle. Prost!

Denver is full of options for the bearded and flanneled, but Crooked Stave specializes in sour brewing. For all the beer hating ninnies , this place may actually quench your pallet. With a rotating tap selection and quality barrel aged sours, I'd recommend this to the snobs and the Sallys.

I am the biggest fan of sour beers, especially Bret. Well, FINALLY I've hit the Bret jackpot. Crooked Stave not only has a wide array of quality sours, but they are done well and noticeably different from one another. I will be back. I will spread the word. I had to try every one... And they all are great.

A great place for morning beer. Yea, morning beer, don't judge. Sometimes you need to try eight beers before noon and this place has a great atmosphere for it. For one, you aren't the only one drinking beer before noon and second, they offer many light beers so you can continue your day. My husband and I split tasting seven or eight beers, the saison being my favorite and the one made from citrus hops was his. This place is in The Source and has plenty of seating and wifi is offered for all customers to the building. Service was super friendly, def will go back.

I'll start by saying at first this place was hard to find. It's in a building called "the source". I was expecting a crooked stave sign or something to that effect but there is nothing outside that lets you know this tasty place is inside. To start I got the beer flight. As you progress down the wall the beers get more sour. This is a highly unique taste due to the bitterness of the beers. My favorite was the beer called Nightmare on (I forget what he street was called). Not to digress but the source was a pretty cool spot. It had a liquor store, a butcher, a bakery, 2 bars, a shop and 2 restaurants. The vibe was a mix between Drake and lady Gaga...in a good way. I'll be back

"I want to take you guys to a really funky brewery..." was the line I heard as a few of us were plotting a mini renunion of sorts between 4 chumps from grad school together in Denver. Oh good lord, here we go again was my thought....then I remembered it was Denver!! So the chances of this being funky good were pretty high....and I was not disappointed. This is a brewery that specializes in belgian style ales and mainly sour ales from what I could tell from the board. Open, irreverent and lively is the atmosphere of this place, and throw in knowledgeable brewers and bartenders who are willing to talk about beers, give you small sips/tastes and help refine choices...and you have the makings of a great slim belly buster! The beers were well conceived and executed with a few exceptions that were not there for me. One of my favorites was a collaboration between Jester King and another brewery! This beer boasted floral aromas of sage and lemon verbena with the earthy almost smoky bit of cumin in the mix! Talk about something that makes you crave barbecued meat! Other standouts included a sour ale with a touch of lavender and honey, one with rosehips and honey and of course their absolutely stellar farmhouse ale called the Surette which comes in various formats of aging. An absolutely excellent and must go to place in Denver. Trust me, if you like sour ales, you will enjoy exploring the beers here (especially since its an easy Uber ride home) and if you don't like sour ales, be prepared to be educated and converted!

Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of sour beers? If you don't like sour beers I don't recommend this place. Even the beers that don't sound sour on the description are sour.

I've come here thrice with all 3 times due to the wait time for a table @ Acorn restaurant (also in the Source). It's a great place to get a casual drink while you're hanging out at the cool/hip Source. They specialize in Belgian sour beers & offer a great variety of them! I find sour beers easier to drink than regular beers. I imagine that the invention of sour beers was due to incorrect production of regular beer but who cares! Let the yeast run wild. This place is open daily from noon to 11PM and is normally staffed by 1-2 people. Last time I came there was only 1 chick working which made the wait time to get my order taken kind of long. Each table in Crooked Staves has a glass of coffee beans so you can clear the fragrance of a previous sour before you smell (?) the next. I didn't know smelling beer was a thing but apparently the coffee beans represent otherwise. I've tried their boysenberry sour, the nightmare & about 12 other sours here that I cannot remember the names of. All taste pretty different from one another with some more acidic than the other or some more bitter. This place offers fun events every now & then like beer & donut pairings. You can check their events on their website or their instagram/FB.

Great and knowledgeable service, a hip location and very interesting brews. My boyfriend is a huge fan of sources so this place was top on his list. I love the open barn / loft feel. We strolled right up to the bar and started in on our tasting. First, we tried to locate the place late at night (close to their closing time), but we thought we could sneak in. The directions are a bit funky. They lead you to Brighton Blvd. but the star is placed on a different street. Do not be fooled! You enter from Brighton. The bar is located in the Public Market building with a few other shops and two pretty great restaurants. You can work with their suggested tasting that will move you slowly through their wild yeast selections and ever so slightly will become more intense and sour. Do not go by what is on their website, not updated and they have so much more! We picked our favorites from the list and went with the Vieille Cranberry & Spice, holy hibiscus! It was almost like drinking a hibiscus tea or Kombucha to me. We moved on to the HopSavan Amarillo, do not be fooled, do not hope for a hoppy beer, still sour! I enjoyed the Petite Sour Blueberry. This is one of the most sour but not a mouth-pucker sour. Next up was the Motif Reserva, Belgian style sour, so do not expect too much sweetness. Then we went for the Nightmare on Bret, aged in red wine barrels. Yum! So much my favorite. I love the dark sour taste with the dryness the wine brings. There is no food in this joint and you cannot walk around the Market with your beer so plan accordingly.

This place is in The Source, which is a super cool building/spot in general. The beers are pretty awesome and you can do a recommended flight. Nothing stuck out as blowing me away, but everything was tasty and the staff was helpful, and the space is just so cool. Would definitely recommend some beers here then trying some of the awesome looking restaurants in the space!

If you like sour beers, this place is for you! If not, I wouldn't come here... If you have never had a sour beer before, the best way that I can describe it is like a mix between a Belgian/Wheat beer, kombucha, and lemon or sour candy LOL. The brewery had tons of different types on tap. I preferred the fruit flavored ones, but all of them were pretty good. The brewery is located inside The Source in the River North District. I wish that I had time to explore The Source more because the stores and restaurants looked super cool. The whole building was packed and so was the brewery. The staff were super friendly and fun and it was one of the highlights to our trip to Denver

Sour beers are a thing? A thing that I love? Who knew! So happy to have accidentally parked in their parking lot. We tried several of the little sample glasses, which is the best way to experience a new brewery in my opinion! The Petite Sours are to die for, I very much wanted to take some of the Tart Cherry home with me! (Our plans didn't allow it). I'm curious to try their other seasonal varieties as they come out, which will be bringing me back for sure! Looking forward to more mouth-puckering beverages!

I did not get what I expected from this inconspicuous warehouse. We drove by it twice before we figured we just walk in and explore. Once we walked in though, this place amazed my entire group. The meat aging on the left. the restaurant on the right. The sour beer at the back. Awesome, palate awaken and let's do this. We walked to the back and found Crooked Stave. I definitely am on the sour beer train so I started off with the flight and immediately found my favorites, the Wild Sage and Origins. The rest of the flight was just as good, and thus I was enticed to try more. I got to try all but two of the beers and even took some Origins home. The bartender / server was knowledgeable about their entire process and knew everything about their beers. He was insanely friendly and spoke in detail to our group about what they do there. Definitely on my wish list when I get back to Denver.

A few friends and I checked this place out on a Saturday afternoon. Wow, the Source is a cool place. We made our way to the back where we found Cooked Stave, which is known for its artisan beer. I think it is really impressive that the bar tenders can remember which draft is which, considering there are so many of them and they all look the same. A couple friends got the sampler, one of them couldn't seem to find any beers he liked. Everything is very spiced and has strong flavors, this type of beer is very in style but definitely isn't for everyone. My date kind of liked his, I also kind of liked mine. These beers range in price from $6-$12 so you hope to find a flavor that you enjoy but again, the spiced characteristic can be too much. The guys ordered a cheese plate which took a while to come out, when we got it, it was delicious, but they don't have table numbers so you can tell the person who brings it out just looks kind of confused trying to locate you. Overall, I am really glad we tried it, they have a great concept in a very cool place, however the flavors are just too much for me. Come here if you want to try a sour or something with lots of flavors going on in a cool part of town.

Love this place. Mainly because of their great beer though. It's very expensive. No actual brewing seems to be going on there. The location in the source is nice. I've been here several times and the service is always good but slow. Also, notice that there is a crooked stave barrel cellar listed on yelp, think this is actually just for brewing and or storage. No way to get in and try a beer in a tasting area within the listed hours :( I'll be back

We stopped in for a drink while waiting for our reservation time at Acorn. My husband had a pint and I had the recommended flight - it was fun and quite good! I love sour beers and their sour blueberry is pretty tasty! The vibes at the Source is great, too - so fun!

For some beer is a religion. It's a lifestyle and a way of life. Beer has a long rich history. Sour beers have a short history in the US and are creating a magical stir in the world of beer. Let me start by saying I am not a lover of beer! Truly I am one of very few in Denver that will admit to not caring much for beer. My tastes tend to bourbons, scotch, cognac, and tequilas. Crooked Stave has been an eye opening and uniquely satisfying experience every time, I've entered their sacred space of chill tunes, comfortable seating, and very laxe demeanor of brilliant and caring service. Oh-- and I guess I should mention the life changing beers on tap... Coming from a person who does not like or even drink much beer, I am in love with every unreal taste that pours freely from the Stave taps. Maybe the best tasting beer I have ever experienced...ever. Sour beer is in essence science, and craftsmanship coming into a symbiotic relationship to produce acetic fermented brews. These magically flavored pours have a higher presence of pro-biotics floating along the ride down into your gut for healing and soothing never found in average brews. Crooked Stave offers satisfying small pours of every brew served to make sampling an easy and delish experience. The service is exquisitely timed with knowledge, care, and friendly service that sets a new standard in Denver. Sit at the bar if you require and want extra guidance. And if you just want a chill private experience with your group of chums sit at a table. Just think to walk to the bar if you are empty and needing a replenishment. Ask for Andra, Jeff, or Ben! Those are the great servers I've become fond of. Here's the bonus- they pour Happy Leaf Kombucha. This stuff is amaze-balls and yummmmmmmmm. Again, I usually avoid the stuff, and tease my girlfriend about drinking that crap! It's good here!!! Come for bottles to-go, a fantastic experience at the bar, or even alone to work or jam out to good tunes with your beers. Another plus- it's at The Source, which is home to some exemplary small batch crafty goodness, as well as some noteworthy food/dining options. I am excited about this place-- The Crooked Stave is a must go turn around and don't miss spot here in Denver. Go taste these beers and be prepared to be blown away by "Sour" beer!

I really do enjoy crooked stave and I believe, after have visited several times now, just how affirmed I am as a sour beer lover. And crooked stave does every single one to perfection. There isn't a unique sour brew on that menu I don't like. Their space is obviously cool - inhabiting the back of the collaborative space, The Source - but it's the staff that really adds the finesse. Charming, enthusiastic to help you find the beer for you, and most importantly - passionate and proud about their sour beer. I love taking visitors here, which always makes me look cool. Showing of our city's awesome variety of beer is cool, but the variety of sour beer is even cooler.

This place has it all. 1. Excellent service. 2. Excellent beers. 3. Decent ambiance. Like people say, they specialize in saisons and sours. So if you're not ready for the sour thing, it can be weird. But if you're into the scene, you will love it. I came alone on a Friday afternoon and really enjoyed myself. The bartender was hyper efficient. They do have some bottles that you are allowed to purchase and walk out with, which is awesome. The building has a couple of restaurants in it too, so you can make this a full afternoon trip. Crooked Stave is a winner.

I'm not a sour beer lover (yet), but I do think that having access to so many great beers in Denver has helped in preparing me for a sour beer flight - which is exactly what I did here. I know what you're thinking - this guy doesn't even like sour beers and is giving it 5 stars?!!! I will say that the preferred flight was a perfect progression of sour beers - even for the not-yet fan. You really get a sense of complexity with these beers that is not for everyone. Did I absolutely love every beer? Hell no! But what I did appreciate was an attentive bartender who was very approachable and knowledgeable. On top of it, this place was SLAMMED! So many people were here the night we came and to receive quality service was unexpected yet fully given to us. Get over to this place inside the Source.

i love sour beer , i had two glasses of beer which should be 20 oz and it cost me $19( Origins and blueberry one) .. now is that worth that much .. my answer is no ... now if you wanna get some kinda free samples the bartender will scratch some from your tab in favor for a better tip bus since i had full glasses nothing was offered to me :)

  • Anitra S.

You guys, this place is the best place there ever was. The sour beers are on point, and I want to cry with happiness just thinking about it. Without checking the prices, me and my boyfriend tried a few tasters, and ended up ordering 2 of the most expensive beers haha. So worth it guise, get the Nightmare!

I always say there needs to be something at every brewery that sets it apart, with so many breweries in Denver, that is my minimum standard. Crooked Stave goes well above and beyond that standard, and I can't wait to return here (despite the numerous options!). My visit to Crooked Stave was on a Thursday early afternoon just because I was in the area. Located inside "The Source" which is a very cool artisan market located in a older brick gut and retrofit building, a very cool ambiance for the small shops and eateries located within. Crooked Stave is in the back of the space with a long L shaped bar and a number of tables. They have a huge number of taps, with a large variety of beers on tap, really a fantastic atmosphere. The second (and most important) thing that stood out to me about Crooked Stave was the beer. The beer was incredibly diverse, interesting, and surprising. Its hard to know what to expect, but every sample was unique and tasty. I tried the recommended flight which consisted of a well rounded combination including saisons and sours which is the specialty of Crooked Stave. I finished off by trying the bartenders favorite which was an even darker sour ale, aged in bourbon barrels. It was absolutely incredible, very interesting, diverse flavors, and one of the most unique beers I've ever tried. On top of all the wonderful things about the atmosphere and the beer, the service was quick, friendly and helpful, despite there being a big crowd for afternoon on a Thursday the single bartended was flying around the room and I felt really well taken care of. I cannot recommend a visit to Crooked Stave highly enough.

Sour beers abound here. Vieille and Nightmare on Brett were some of our favorites! I loved the location in the locally-sourced market/restaurant warehouse. The industrial atmosphere is very cool. All brews were available as 4oz and full pours. We tried samples of a handful of brewer (ranging from $3-4 for 4oz). We also tried the 2 kombucha teas they had on tap - the beet ginger one was very earthy and we enjoyed the lavender one a bit more. Might try the tea/beer combos they offered the next time around. The place was busy on a Monday afternoon but the bartender was friendly and able to answer any questions.

  • Amy S.

Absolutely my favorite brewery in Denver. No- scratch that. My favorite brewery EVER. All sour beers?! How could any sane person resist? They also sell kombucha, which I did not taste, but I don't doubt that it is phenominal. The best part about it is that the atomsphere is cool as well! The place was fairly busy, but not packed on a Saturday evening. My boyfriend and I got food to go from Camidas and took it there. We got a flight and also took some bottles to go. My favorite was the Autumn Surette, although there were plenty that were up there in rankings. The only one that I wasn't a fan of was the Motif. It tasted like burnt peanut butter to me. Anyway, I can't wait to come back!!

If you're a fan of sour beers, you will love Crooked Stave. By focusing almost exclusively on Belgian-style sours they have perfected this tart, complex and delicious style of brew. If you have never tried a sour beer, you should head over immediately. They offer taster sizes of all their brews and you're certain to find something that appeals to your taste buds. Finally if you're one of those folks who don't like beer (a concept I cannot understand, but apparently it affects many individuals) then you should also give Crooked Stave a try. Their beers have a totally different flavor profile than your typical ales and lagers. There are little to no hops, and many associate the flavors a bit closer to a wine than a beer. Finally, if I still haven't swayed you, go check them out just for the location. Nestled in the back of The Source, you have great restaurants (Comida, Acorn) and shopping just steps away. You can chill out at Crooked Stave in between buying flowers, meats, cheese or other crafty goods. This place has got a great space, filled with hip music, friendly folks and did I mention the beer?

A+++ service. But, okay, seriously - what the hell is The Source???? We were there from San Diego, and when I walked into The Source I pretty much had a panic attack. You know that episode of Seinfeld where George is dating that model and she takes him to that crazy party, but then when George tries to go back to find it, it is just like a meat locker or something? That's what I felt like The Source was. During the party part, not the meat locker part. It was so so so weird. Anyway. The guy working at Crooked Stave was awesome, even though we got there just a few minutes before they closed. Note - they close earlier than The Source. I think they closed at 8, but The Source closed at 10, or something like that.

  • Rosanna C.

Maybe I'm not a fan of sour beers but I had a hard time drinking the flight I ordered. One of the bartenders seemed buzzed or just completely aloof and honestly, kind of a jerk. The Source is pretty cool - go ahead and visit the brewery for the novelty not the beer or service - drive 5 min down the road to Epic Brewery for that.

How anyone could rate this under a 5 is mind blowing. Some of the best sours in this country right in my own backyard

The beer is amazing. They are definitely not for the new drinker of sour beer. If you want an IPA don't come here, but if you want amazing sour/wild ale/brett beer then this is can't miss. Just hope I can find it somewhere in Washington.

Located inside The Source, it reminds me of the ferry building in San Francisco. By this I mean, it is an amazing location, really cool interior design, fun to wander and look at all of the things that are overwhelmingly overpriced that can be purchased for a fair price only minutes away. Anyway, we came here for the BEER! Sours all day folks-my mans favorite! I looked this place up months before we came out to visit Denver and couldn't wait to take him here. You guys are killin' it here. Between the Pomegranate Sour and the Kombucha on tap, I'm sold. Love that you offer $2 tastes (which are a good size for a "taste"). It allowed us to try all of your offerings without getting toasted. So why 4 stars? Well, the service was okay, not rude but not super friendly. You'd think with such a specialized product, you would feel a bit more enthusiastic about it. Also, I went up twice to try and order another round and the female bartender was talking with another patron, so I sat back down and waited until she was done and then went back up again. Overall, I liked this place-location was great, beers were freaking delightful but the bartenders need to learn to smile.

If you are a fan of sour beers than do not leave Crooked Stave out of your go-to list when visiting Denver. Located inside The Source building on Brighton, Crooked Stave has over 20 taps bringing you fruity and funky tastes. I opted for dealers choice when we came here and the bartender poured up 8 solid recommendations to try. Whether you are educated or new to the brew scene, the staff at Crooked Stave makes you feel right at home. Their knowledge of the craft is something I admire here. Cheers!

  • Deya Z.

Note: Sours are not my beer of choice by any means...but this place gets 4 stars easily thanks to the awesome location & fantastic service! We stopped by on a Friday night expecting to be booted out of any place but this place was great. Definitely not our scene of choice (lots of hipster types, but where can you honestly go in Denver without being surrounded by hipsters?) The bartender was super helpful as soon as we arrived and helped us through the decision making process. We settled on a sampler flight, something to get us accustomed to the sour world. Again, not a fan of the beer itself (personal preference), but this place is worth a try!

Dear Bartender that was working on 6/7/15, I love Crooked Stave and was very excited to take my sisters here for their first sour beer (especially on her birthday). It was so incredibly rude that you kept walking away and ignoring me when I was just trying to inform you that The Sources' website had incorrect information for your closing time on Sunday evenings. Horrible customer service! I specifically joined yelp to write this comment because I felt so disrespected as your customer, which saddens me because I have never had any problems before this.

They only serve artisan beers, particularly sour beers. Not my kind of deal (or anyone in my group), but the environment is really cool.

  • Scott G.

Friendly bartenders, excellent sours... What's not to love? Highly recommend the seasonal cranberry and spice sour, especially if you dig hibiscus. It's a well balanced ale.

  • Jared L.

YUM with a capital UUMMMMMMM..... They have have a great variation of sour beers. I was really surprised by how many they kept on tap! The location is very cool with the original buildings graphitti left on it inside and the entire atmosphere is unique enough to come check out the source. I'm defiantly bringing my growler next time to bring some of these delicioso cervesas home.

Hands down, my favorite beer. Ever. For fans of sour beers, it just doesn't get any better than this. Honestly, I don't like their lighter wheat beers, but the darker ones (unfortunately also the more expensive) are simply incredible. Among my favorites is Origins, would definitely recommend it. Pretty hipster scene, but honestly, if you live in Denver and like sour beer, aren't you a hipster anyway? My biggest gripe is that their beer is crazy expensive, for some $10-$12 a pour. I considered lowering my rating to 4 stars because of this, but honestly, it's just too damn good.

  • Nat S.

Located in a factory building set back from the road, which contains other restaurants and gastronomic delights- like a booze boutique, and a charcuterie installation. If you don't like sour beers then, you will be out of luck. They also brew Kumbucha, which they claim is actually like 2% ABV. We had two pours the Surette- a provision saison and the mandarin orange St Bretta Summer. Both were complex and fabulous. No food here, just sour beer. That said it is a niche brewery, that does a wonderful job in the small market segment it provides.

Great selection of sours! Very knowledgeable, friendly service. Will definitely add to our list of places we visit every time we're in Denver. Just wish we could take some bottles back home to tx with us!

Ah Crooked Stave - such delicious sour beer!! Their new location is pretty cool, although a petty complaint is that they dont have food. It's just too easy to get carried away drinking here without anything to nibble on. Their sour beer really hits the spot for me - I only wish they had more of them available more often... I dont make it to Denver very often and am sometimes disappointed by how few sours they have on tap.

    (4)
  • Alyssa M.

This is my favorite beer in Denver. The variety of sours keeps me continually wanting to convince people to make the trek up to Brighton Blvd. to see what new brews they have come up with. Sours are by far my favorite kind of beer and crooked stave was the impetus for that move! I love their Nightmare on Brett and I was in recently and seriously enjoyed the Cinnamon Hibiscus Petit Sour and the Tart Cherry Petit Sour. Everyone should try this place.

My favorite brewery in denver currently. I admit, I'm a huge fan of sour beers, as I am of kombucha, cranberries, sour patch anything, etc. If you don't particularly like sour flavors, I don't know if you'd have the same love for Crooked Stave. Either way, give it a shot! Jeff & Alex behind the bar are true professionals, recognizing familiar faces and staying attentive to new guests' questions. My favorite is a full pint of Origins.

Awesome place to go to...there's of cool shops inside but I go for the beer! they're always experimenting with their brews. Highly recommended.

These guys consistently produce great beers and specifically sour beers. I am sad that they closed their barrel room down to the public as it was walking distance from my house, but then again maybe it's a good thing! The Source is such a fun place to visit with all the various stores inside and I love the fact that this place is tucked away in the far back so it kind of feels like it's all secluded. It's definitely worth knowing that they do not serve the tables. They expect you to go up to the counter and order drinks yourself. The staff has always been super friendly to me though and was even willing to come over and serve me when I brought my dog in that had just recently had surgery. Beware though, because of the complexity of making some of the beers, prices can range anywhere from $6.00 to $12.00 for one glass. It is so worth it though!! And for those that do not want a beer, they have some tasty kombucha options as well.

Great beers, awkward service. The bartender last afternoon felt it was appropriate to make a casual rape joke. Came by to check on us and said, "sorry, let me know if I'm being too rapey." 5 stars for the beer, 1 star for the bullshit bro bartender. Casual rape jokes are not ok!

Delicious! Well, if you're into sour beers and pretentious bartenders. It's located in The Source, btw.

I am definitely not a fan of sour beers, but the have a cool little setup. The staff was very friendly. If you like sours then you should check this place out. Just not my cup of tea.

I found Crooked Stave while checking out the Source and I'm glad I did. This has been my happiest beer find since Funkwerks about two years ago. Crooked Stave specializes in sour beers and they do it well. I don't think they had a single beer I didn't love, which I can't say for many other breweries. Of course tastes in beer seem to be even more subjective than food, but if you're a fan of sour beer then definitely check this place out. They are quite pricey, but anything purchased in a warehouse-turned-hipster-craft-food-and-drink-emporium will usually end up lightening your wallet a little. The taproom was crowded, but the service was still quick and friendly. My only complaint is that the parking lot at the Source is a little awkward to get into from Brighton and not really big enough for the weekend crowd.

Not a fan of sour beers. However, you never know till you try. One of the bearded bartenders had a lame vibe, The building and layout, itself, is where it's at. Brick, steel and wood combination with high ceilings brings a nice open feeling.

Best sours around in the heart of Denver. The Petit Sour Pomegranate is crisp, clean, and has a definite kick at the end. Bartender was knowledgeable and made good suggestions. The warehouse it's located in (The Source) is a pretty neat place too. Don't miss this place on your stop for beer around Denver.

WAHOOOOOO SOURS!!!! Ok, got that out of my system... In the dark corner of a warehouse-turned-hipster-market lies Crooked Stave - Denver's BEST answer to where you find sour beer! As any lover of craft beer will tell you, with sourness comes dollar signs. If you are looking for a cheap beer, this is not your place. Crooked Stave is a spot for those who put quality over quantity. Slow it down, relax, and enjoy a pint or two of sour awesomeness (and make a hipster friend while you're at it)!

I love Crooked Stave beer. One of my favs nationwide for sure. So why three stars? Unfortunately the bartenders here just aren't used to their new huge L shaped bar. I have been here a number times..both packed and smaller crowds. Either way they are still pretty slow to get drinks/refills and badly ignore sections of the bar. They tend to focus on two spots and don't move from there..very disappointing especially if you have a seat at the bar a ways down from that spot..I've waited 20+ minutes. I will say..I keep going back because the beer and the location make up for it. They serve mostly sour and very adventurous beer...and the source is such an amazing location. Hopefully the bartenders will get used to the new location soon!

I'm going to go to The Source, late in the evening, then find an inconspicuous hiding place and patiently wait there and wait until all the shops close and everything is tranquil and quiet and dark. Then I'm going to go into the taproom and stick my head under the tap of the raspberry petite sour all night until they open again in the morning. I don't care if I go to jail forever.

Come ye, weary of foot and sour of palate, and rejoice! ...but bring ye much coin. This shit ain't cheap. Crooked Stave is nestled in the back of The Source, which is an 1880s brick foundry building turned artisan food market. Sound a little hipstery? It totally is! But that also just means everybody here is committed to their craft, be it making tacos, arranging flowers, or brewing sour beers. Crooked Stave does the latter in spades, keeping a menu so deep with funky beers that my lips pucker just thinking about it. Whether or not this is a good thing or a bad thing will depend entirely on your preference. Me, I can't get enough sour beers. I've been volunteering at Great American Brew Festival for the past several years and absolutely love the sudden shift towards sundry sours. My dad, however, is a light beer devotee, and was none too impressed by even the mildest beer they offered. If you've never tried a sour before, you're making a bit of a gamble. You aren't going to have a lot of fallback options. You'll also be in for an expensive experiment as these things are priced at a premium. One of the stronger beers they offered when I went ran about $13, which, damn, I could buy a whole six-pack for that much. Come to sip and socialize, not to get wasted. I was a surprised to see so much hate heaped upon the bartenders in the other reviews, but I suppose that's another "your mileage will vary" point. I hit them with the incredibly stupid "Hey, since I share names with some of your beers, think I could get a free pour?" in reference to the numerous Brett yeast beers. The bartender just laughed it off and said she was surprised how many people have tried that. I also struck up a brief conversation regarding some tattoos they were sporting and didn't detect any impatience or frustration in spite of how busy they were. Maybe I caught the right person at the right time, but I've definitely felt less welcome elsewhere. For how much I like the beers they do offer, I can't quite push them up to 5 stars. The best breweries are, in my opinion, the ones that are able to competently experiment across a variety of beer types and consistently get good results. Big points to the Stave for mastering the sour and saison, but I'd love to see what they do out of their comfort zone.

If you're a sour lover, this is the Denver brewery for you. World-class sours, and really nothing of anything else. Most of their beers are also on the quite-sour to very-sour end of the sourness scale, so you're not going to find many slightly soured browns etc. If that all sounds good, this is the place for you; friendly service, a nice atmosphere, and a ton of sour beers. More of an IPA fan and don't really go in for sours? Maybe this isn't your place.

If you're a fan of sour beers, then this is definitely a must visit in Denver. It's tucked away in the back of the Source, and has a nice large bar, with a few tables throughout. The beer list has a wide range of sours, from slightly sour to extremely mouth puckering. I'm a huge fan of sours and have liked everything I've sampled here. Definitely a tap room I plan on frequenting.

I didn't spend any time anywhere else in The Source, but I must say that there were some cool-looking shops and they've really created a nice space. Especially having Crooked Stave there. Aside from the fact that I was unable to sample any beer before ordering it---you must pay for samples---I really enjoyed Crooked Stave. For $12, I was able to sample almost all of the beers on tap and found all to be splendid. It's been a while since my visit, so I can't go into too many specifics about each, but I do remember the Origins beer being a standout. The beer had a great tart-and-sweet combination and was smooth as silk. All of the other, more regular, offerings were good with the Vielle being my favorite. I picked up a bottle of this and Origins for $19 to take home. . I discovered during my quick visit that there are two columns of what are essentially the same beer---Vielle, for example---brewed with different hops or other recipe changes. As a serial beer taster, I'd have loved to try them all but it would have cost me a small fortune. If you're rich, try them all. If not, I suggest the Vielle and the Origins. As for the service, the one gal behind the bar was polite, prompt and responsive and demonstrated a good knowledge of the CS beers. I'd love to return and spend more time getting to know their beers.

Awesome taproom, delicious sours and most important amazing service! We stopped by the taproom on a recent beer-cation to Denver and Mia was very friendly, informative and attentive. This will always be on my list of things to do while I'm visiting Denver!

I had tried Crooked Stave beers in Fort Collins at Funk Works, but I was blown away when I visited CS in The Source. The bar tender was super nice and I loved the laid back, urban atmosphere of the tasting room. I was lucky enough to get to sample WWBC, Nightmare on Brett (Leopold Bros Whiskey barrel), Surette, Vielle, Spiced Vielle, Vielle with Happy Leaf hibiscus kambucha, and Vilelle with Happy Leaf lemon ginger kambucha. All of these were amazing, since I love sours and saisons. If you can only get one, which I don't recomend, then for my moey it would have to be the Surette (sour and dark with amazing rich finish), but a close second is the spiced vielle (thing the best holiday drink you have EVER had, very gingery and tart). Most tasters are $3, with a full pour being $6...which is a great reason to go with friends and share your beer.

Let's talk about cool. I mean original cool, the kind of cool that is pervasive throughout a person's being or a place. It's inescapable, uplifting, and well... cool. Crooked Stave, their sour beers, and especially Ben are cool. My buddy and I were treated like regulars, friends even, and were humbled by the majesty that was St Bretta, Suretta 12', Original Sin, and some Blueberry yum yum. Want to emasculate a manly man? Let me talk to you about how much I loved these sweet, sour, liquid rainbows - we're talking quivering knees and a grin to my ears. These beers are bold, and much like scotch - loved by time (we're not talking 1 month ferments here... more like 18 months!) Go here and order an Original Sin. Now. What are you waiting for?!

    (5)
  • Andrea H.

Loved most of the sours, very busy but the service was good and great atmosphere. Original Sin was the bomb!!

We ended up here after looking for a late night drink in the area. The bartender was so helpful and kind even though we were there near closing time - I am pretty sure she even extended last call for us. Aside from the excellent and knowledgable service (it is always great when your bartender knows about the beers), The Source is so fun to look at. The vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and concrete floors make this brewery really unique. We will definitely be keeping an eye out for this brewery on tap or in stores in Fort Collins - excellent sour beer!!

I can't get enough of the beers from Crooked Stave! I absolutely love sours, and after spending a week in Denver, unable to find a sour on tap, Crooked Stave saved the day! I went with the recommended taster flight, and the only beer I wasn't a huge fan of was the Vielle. It wasn't bad, it just tasted watered down compared to the other beers in the flight. My favorite out of the was Original Sin - I almost ordered a full glass in addition to the flight, but I had to be able to drive at some point, so I refrained. There were a couple well behaved kids here when my friends and I went, which we didn't mind, but if it weirds you out for some reason, just be aware that they're allowed. Crooked Stave also offers kombucha, so non drinkers can try that. Next time I'll have to partake because I have a thing for the 'buch. One of the tables next to us knew what they were doing and brought bread, cheese, and salami from the other vendors in the Source. Definitely going to follow suit next time!

  • Christopher B.

I really love the feel of the old warehouse, exposed brick, spray paint, and over all industrial feel. The ceilings are so high they're almost non-existent and you just feel like they have so much openness in their new location! Love it! On top of the very cool location their beers just rock if you're into sours. I tried 4 or 5 different ones and just thought they were super. My favorite two were the Sour Cherry and the Blood Orange beers.

My favorite brewery in Colorado - amazing sours & great saisons. Always something interesting in tap & the new location has a great atmosphere. If you're looking for delicious, interesting beer - you have to try this brewery!

I love their beer. The location inside the source is sadly not dog friendly, but really great for a day out. I rank Crooked Stave's beer in my top five local favorites, and am happy to see them in such a great location.

Sour beers are my new favorite! They knock them put of the park. Super friendly staff. It got busier as I say here but the staff was still attentive. I will be back with my husband since we both have fallen in love with sour beers. Even if you have never had a sour beer you should check this place out and get a taste of beer most breweries are afraid to make.

I'm slowly but surely falling in to the "overrated" side of Crooked Stave's camp. I enjoy a sour/wild/funky ale as much as the next craft beer fan, but it has to be worthwhile for the heartburn inducing, teeth enamel peeling after-effects that is (unfortunately) characteristic of this type of beer. And you know, all of their current offerings (variations of Vieille and Surette) just sort of taste the same to me. Most recently, the cranberry Vieille with spices caught my eye so we made a special trip in. Unfortunately, I didn't really detect any fruit/spice notes. It could have been because my taste buds were so blown out by the lactic acid. That said, I had a bottle of their Wild Wild Brett Indigo hanging out for more than a year and when I finally broke into it, it was amazing. A strong blueberry flavor with a hint of barnyard. More ROYGBIV please. And I certainly appreciate what they bring to the Denver craft beer scene. The taproom and its offerings is just not my 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) choice. Speaking of their taproom, not my favorite. The beertenders seem very knowledgable, but there aren't enough of them. It's still pretty small and there are a few low tables that make me think of a mall food court. It definitely doesn't have the taproom culture I've come to love from other Denver breweries and I can't see myself making friends here (with the bartenders or the patrons) like I can at other places. Also, the prices are pretty darn high (like upwards of $10 for a 10-12 ounce pour). But their beers take longer to produce and I get that.

During our recent beer tour, Crooked Stave was the place I was most looking forward to. I had heard that the original location was teeny tiny, so I was happy to make it to this location. While not a huge space, it seemed to have an expansive L-shaped bar, as well as some tables. We had a group of 10 or 11 people and we were able to snag a table that seated 6-7 and grabbed some extra chairs. I had a saison (not to my liking), the St. Bretta with Minneola Tangelos (tasty) and two sours. The Burgundy Sour was dark and tart, really enjoyed it. The Golden Sour, ehh, not so much. Whenever I go to a new brewery, I tend to go for tasters to try a little of everything, which is what I did here. The prices for tasters are quite a bit more dear than other places, so be prepared. While the sour beer concept is something that I'd not experienced as much, it was good to try them.

After dinner within The Source, we swung by The Crooked Stave to enjoy a flight sampler of sour beers. My husband and I both enjoyed the variety we sampled and were especially pleased with the friendly and efficient service and the ambiance. We enjoyed our time there and look forward to bringing out of town visitors on our next outing. We left with a bottle of beer and a T-Shirt and a great night.

Beers are fine. Although they sort of have a problem with the same beers showing up with a different mix. Sort of like the song on the radio that gets the club mix, the dub step mix, the radio edit, etc. BUT...The service at this place is an absolute joke. Always understaffed and even when not, it's like the employees have a laundry list of other non-customer facing stuff to do (or at least pretend to). On 3 different occasions I've walked in here to find no employee anywhere. It's not that they are unfriendly--because once you've been lucky enough to trap one into helping you they are great--it's just getting that trap set is pretty hard. For $7+ beers it's sort of annoying to have to waive dollars around when you're one of three people to get some service. Maybe it's the coffee culture creeping into the beer world, but I'd like someone that moves their feet and slings beer when I check in. As for the facility, this is one of my current favorites in Denver. Cool, open and you can stick around as long as you like. Food and other such stuff is plentiful here. Nice open space to work in or hang with friends and not be bugged or people watch.

Sour Central.. they said? If you're looking for some great sours, this is your joint! Really cool brew pub stashed in the back corner of "Marketplace" I think it was called? Service was adequate and it was pretty packed/ definite stop for any beer "Connoisseur" !! get dat did

Awesome beer selection!! If you like sour beers this is the place to be. If you haven't tried sours I recommend coming here to try them. Crooked Stave is worth visiting. They are making unique but delicious beers and deserve to be noticed! The bartenders are knowledgable and great interacting with the large crowds. The atmosphere is casual and fun. Definitely a brewery that deserves kudos here in Denver.

  • Erin E.

I have to say I liked their smaller hole-in-the-wall location better than this hip joint with bright overhead lights. I'll take cozy any day. But regardless, still tasty sour beers with several variations on each. Sour beers are going to cost you, but I do not have the equipment nor the knowledge to make my own, so to Crooked Stave I go when I'm in Denver and have a hankering for a good sour. Service is a little slow and not overly friendly, but the beer delivers.

The beer is excellent, very cool atmosphere, sours are obviously the focus. No shame in charging for these delicious brews.

What a place. They have tasters of all of there beers as well as there side projects of each beer. While i was there i tried just about 10 different beers and i wasn't let down by one. This is a must have brewery if you are in the Denver area. There is a food court as well if you are hungry. They have a multiple bottles to go. So go try some beers and then find ones you like and take them back with you. Go now!

While we are already currently big fans of Crooked Stave and what they do, this new brewery that they opened in the Source is fantastic. We went there yesterday for the opening of the new place, and while there were some opening day hiccups, it was super crowded, and the crowd that was there was a bit D0~$$&y, we saw through these opening day issues for what this place is and what it will be. It is in the source, which is a fantastic place in its own right, but that will be in a separate review. The Crooked Stave area, (which is where their brewing will be, the barrel aging will remain where it has been, a bit to the west) has the brewing area and an expansive bar, the current tap system is the same as it was in the other area, but it has a much bigger system that doesn't seem to be active yet. We think this place is and will be fantastic, should these opening day hiccups not be fixed, we will adjust this review, but we have confidence in Chad, Kyle, Ben and the rest of the Crooked Stave staff.

I'm generally not a fan of sours and their heartburn/sour stomach after effects, but went here with a friend who loves them. Neither of us were that impressed with Crooked Stave's brews. They basically have two beers: the Vielle and the Surette, and then just do different variations of them. There was a cranberry spiced version of the Vielle, which I didn't like at all, and a strawberry version of the Surette, which was just okay. I liked the dry hopped Surette the best, but I don't think I could've drank a full pour of it. And, after just 5 sample pours (that we shared), my stomach was a little sour with me.

    (3)
  • Doug Y.

I think some of the beers have interesting flavor profiles and are inventive but sour for the sake of sour and then to charge a heavy toll for it? That's just not right. I gotta give the art of the beer a three but the business model is jacked. Insult to injury? Yeah kinda. Hep over hype please.

  • Mike B.

I ended up at The Source location after assuming that I was going to the actual brewery. While it wasn't what I was expecting, the sours on tap was exactly what I wanted and well worth the trip. I was also able to pick up a few bottles to bring home. For those traveling to Denver, there is also a small bottle store next door in The Source where you can pick up a few other local beers.

    (4)
  • Emily S.

Went with some friends On a Tuesday night and it was surprisingly crowded. Started out with a sampler and quickly realized that bout a sours fan. They had a kombucha beer mix and I thought it was strange... Looses carbonation fast and is a bit sweet. I ended up with cranberry lavender beer and it was delish. Il give this place another chance in the next round of brews.

The Dr and I went for happy hour recently and really like the space in The Source. We arrived just as things were opening to avoid crowds. We shared 3 beers and 2 tasters for a total of $45. This is pretty high for a happy hour when no food or snack is involved. I do like their beers, they clearly have the fermentation thing down. I'll look for them around town rather then visit the tap room and be trapped into $10 small pours.

I had no idea what was waiting for me when I walked into the Source, what a dope spot with 2 great restaurants (Acorn and Comida), a fruit and vegetable market, a bakery, a coffee shop, a flower shop, a cocktail bar, a bank, a butcher shop, a liquor store, and finally a brewery. It was shocking to see all these gorgeous stores in such a cool building. I was blown-away. I wish I could say the same for Crooked Stave though. :/ They specialize in bitter beers, although not the biggest fan of bitter beers I like to consider myself extremely open to tasting things and trying new stuff. Unfortunately I tried 4 of their beers and did not really like any of them. The ambiance and feel of the place was excellent and the bartenders where really cool and knowledgeable about the beers but at the end of the day, I left not really satisfied by anything except the kombucha they serve there which was great but not what people normally go to breweries for..

  • Lorene H.

Fantastic place. Obviously they are masters in sour beers, so if that's your thing, you hit the jackpot here. If sours aren't your thing, it's still worth a try. It took me a while to acquire a taste for them, and now I can't stay away. I want to judge them for not using any of the brewing equipment that is on site (and displayed in the brewery) BUT apparently they didn't intend for it to work out that way...I heard they were told after they already moved in that brewing hours were ridiculously limited due to the other businesses in the building, so they were forced to brew off-site. Something along those lines, so I can't hold it against them. The Source (building they are in) is a neat place. It's a conglomerate of little shops and restaurants in one big warehouse. Definitely a cool place to check out.

Had the Vieille (happy leaf), as I love good kombucha almost as much as I love good beer. I was not disappointed. It was flavorful and bright with grapefruit undertones. We shall return!

Finally got around to trying the beer at Cricket's Dave. I'm a fan of this new location and their offerings. The bar is swanky and large and there's a fair amount of seating, though it got a bit crowded this Saturday afternoon. I decided to try a little bit of everything with a flight of their current taps. None of them were bad. A few were just decent, but a few were also fantastic. The Nightmare on Brett - a dark, tart, barrel-aged sour - is incredible. They're also cutting some of their beers with a dash of kombucha, which is a nice touch as it compliments their style of beer nicely. They certainly get points for being unique. Denver is a great beer town with lots of interesting stuff to try, but, as far as I know, nobody is doing it like these guys.

Some of the best beer in the country! Great examples of sour and funky styles. Ben and Travis do a great job at the tap house.

Beer is stellar. Service was lacking. You can order at bar and take to a table in the brew house only, not to the restaurants in the building. Ambience and beer is on point, you can order a flight!

This event was a bit of a mess. Poorly planned and hastily put together. I really enjoy the layout of The Source, but this space was too small for the event. Over 100 attendees were packed in and checking out via a single cash register. This created a horrendous wait and the staff seemed to be more concerned with cleaning glasses then tending to customers. The beer was generally pretty decent, a bit too sour even for my sour taste, but well-crafted none the less. Still wasn't worth the high priced tasters or incredibly long wait. Should be better sour events going on this weekend.

Delicious sour beers! The staff really helped us pick out which beers we might be interested in trying. My husband bought a bottle of Origins to bring home and I got a bottle of Vieille. Definitely a great place to check out... along with the rest of The Source!

  • Leah A.

I love Crooked Stave's beers! True, some of them are definitely pricey ($10 a glass for some of the sours), which prevents me from going here as often as I'd like. But they are good quality beers without a doubt. I like their tap room at The Source BUT they need to add a few more tables. There is ample space for them, and usually it's impossible to find a place to sit. There is a wall that could easily have some tables up against it without them being in the way. If they can utilize the space better, I think it would be a fantastic tap room.

I'm a long-time craft beer fan slowly acquiring a taste for sour beers. I'm usually an IPA, brown, or stout fan but have kept an open mind and through tasting my husband's and friends' sour beers have starting liking sours. I'm not from the area so I have no previous location or taste to compare to, only what I experienced on one single Saturday evening visit. I think The Source is super-cool. I wish space in Detroit could be repurposed into something like this. There was a huge crowd in the place and the line to order was quite long. It was so bad we opted against any samplers, ordered one beer each, and paid with cash so we wouldn't have to deal with that line again. I later found out that there was a birthday party brewery crawl clogging things up. My husband had St. Bretta and I had Vieille with cranberry and spice. Both were perfectly sour. I didn't love the spice part of my Vieille but it was still very good. We each had one drink and took off for dinner elsewhere but there were a few tables if you want to stay longer.

First of all, I have enjoyed Crooked Stave from the start.. but something is "off" with the new place. I can't pinpoint it but will try. First of all, the space kind of sucks, it doesn't feel right like the old place. The girl bartenders are rude as hell, my wife won't go back. Secondly, they have 20 taps, but only 3 or 4 beers. The Surette is not as good as it used to be, what happened? Lastly, the prices?? What happened? Why so expensive all of a sudden, what happened to the 1/2 pour? Did it get too trendy to quickly? It can turn around just as fast. I miss the old place and the old bartenders who would buy you a beer from time to time. The new place just doesn't cut it..

I love sour beers, but I wasn't impressed with their selection. The beers they had were just variations of two or three originals that they have. The only two I was a fan of we're the Holiday Veielle and the St Bretta, but I'm not sure I could drink a full pour of either.

The biggest problem with this place is the beer is so good. I havn't been able to find anything better.

It's pretty simple, if you like sour beers this place is a 5... if you don't, it probably is in the 2-3 range. My only complaint is that I wish the chairs were a bit more comfortable.

Beer is fantastic, if you're into sour styles. I thought the girls behind the counter could have been more helpful, e.g., not charging my group's entire tab on my card before asking. Other than, it was a great experience, and I plan on coming back.

This place looks like it was set up in about 20 minutes. It's sterile, brightly lit, and has no personality. It's got black Formica counter tops (like every other place in The Source, did someone get a discount...), bright lights (just what I like when having a drink), and uhhh...yeah, that's about it. Every beer we tried was sour, like Sour Patch Kids sour! If that's your thing you might like this place. I guess it was worth trying once, but I won't be back and the girls in my group could do nothing but make faces like a child who just bit into a Lemon for the first time. Lastly, when did it become okay to charge $10 for a pint! Are we in NYC? Here's a suggestion to all breweries in Denver. A pint of beer in Denver should top out at $6. That's it, no more. It's just beer people..

Not a fan of sours, but awesome area/location and cool atmosphere. Service was a little slow, but if you like sours then this may be worth a try for you.

Interesting place within the old "Source" building. I love the open-ness of this place incorporating the feel and brick and open ceilings of this old building. I came here as recommended by Business Journal's "24 American Microbreweries Every Beer Lover Should Know". I liked the location, but I wasn't in total love with the beers (not my style I guess), and not worth driving out of my way from dowtown Denver to seek out this place. I enjoy that they use experimental hops and have a bunch of different varieties (I think they had 10 on tap when I was there). The Saison with the New Zealand hop was interesting and unique, and the Hop Savant was tasty. I also enjoyed the wheat beer made with valencia oranges (really could taste them). The sours are unique, so if you are into them, then try this place. I wish them and the Source luck, as this is another good addition to this area of town.

I love Crooked Stave's brettanomyces beers and was very excited to visit their new taproom @ The Source. It was busy and a bit hard to get the attention of one of the bartenders because there was only two but it was surely worth the wait. They are constantly tapping new variations of their flagship beers. Sour beers do tend to cost more to make so therefore they are expensive and i was a bit hesitant to purchase one that I might not like. So we got a bunch of tasters of all their brews instead, which range from $2 - $4. I would recommend doing this to get the full spectrum of their style of wild beers.

Tried all of their beers last night after a wonderful dinner at the source. Unfortunately, what they had on offer did not meet expectations for the only brewery in this amazing venue. Almost all of the beers taste the same. Good luck.

Stopped by on a Sunday via bicycle off the Platt trail. We didn't know the exact location and stumbled upon the brewery by chance in the Source. The building is a welcome addition, great food, butcher etc. The brewery was pretty nice, lots of character but the beer was not to my taste. I am an IPA person and the Savant was good but all the others just tasted a bit sour for me. I know these are true Belgium style and I think they have an audience. Overall I liked the place, the bartender was very nice and helpful. We brought food in from the Mexican restaurant which was good. I will be back, great destination in the middle of a bicycle tour. Watch the side walks after you get off at 31st as they are pretty rough and the Salvation Army tends to draw some characters!
