Good coffee and nice space; like that space is mellow and music is not blaring. Only complaint is that for egg sandwiches they steam eggs in plastic cup, which likely releases nasty chemicals from plastic. Not sure why they don't just steam eggs in metal cup used to steam milk for lattes (obviously not same ones, but same type).

Finding an inviting less pretentious coffee house is very difficult in Denver. Common Grounds is really able to garner both the student and those just wanting a place to relax. The fantastic staff were very welcoming and spent time talking about coffee. As with many coffee establishments, Common Grounds are not focusing on speciality coffee roasting techniques to what I saw and purchased. The Mexico Altura was roasted to City plus extracting most of the flavor of the bean. Most of the beans were roasted to city plus that I saw on the shelves. Focusing more on the location and less on coffee snobs. Especially with no french press, pour overs or aeropress offerings. The clientèle will continue to down their coffee in sugar and milk masking over roasted beans. Instead of devloping a taste for speciality coffee. All in all if you want hot milk or over roasted drip coffee and a great place for homework or meeting this is your location. I will continue to grab a cup of coffee here for the great atmosphere. But purchasing bags of coffee will be done at Huckleberry as they are maintain the highest of quality beans and roasting techniques. Brad Colorado Culture and Cuisine Podcast

Second time I was here and surprised again by how great the food is. Both times I went for a meeting. Last night I had the gluten free chorizo, jalapeno quiche. I could not believe it was gluten free (something I don't need to watch) the crust was so good. I was wishing this morning I had bought a piece to take home for my breakfast this morning. Looking forward to going back. This time to linger with a good book and lunch.

This has become my go to spot when I need a little pick me up in the mornings. They make the best Chai I have ever tasted. I'm not sure what it is about these little cups of heaven, but there is for sure something in them that keeps me coming back again and again. Service is top notch here. I have yet to meet a grumpy barista even at 7am when I usually stop by. I am also addicted to their breakfast burritos as well as the atmosphere in this place. This is the perfect study spot for students. I will definitely be returning!

Was in the area for a little bit and needed a place to do some work... Common grounds worked perfectly! Their drinks were large and tasty! Their wifi worked well. The only problem I had was the fact that there are not a lot of plugins, so it got interesting when my computer was about out of juice...

I'm just going to comment on the internet from the experience of a road traveler who does speed tests at coffee shops around the country. FAST. If you've been working on a bunch of work that needs to get uploaded or have a few big downloads to make that are taking hours at other coffee shops, swing on down to 17MB up and 3MB down. Cha. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Such is true with Common Grounds. This was my go-to coffeeshop when I was a younger lad. It was great because it had that perfect hang-out coffeeshop ambience with games scattered about, lots of tables, books to read. Before I was able to drink, my friends and I would spend hours here, developing some of my favorite youthful memories. But by "here," I actually mean "there," since Common Grounds was forced to move from its Highland digs by greedy landlord system that seems to threaten are cherished small-businesses throughout town. Fortunately, Common Grounds rebounded, moved to Sunnyside and found a location as cozy and awesome as its previous one. Yeah..maybe there aren't as many nooks and crannies to his location, but it does have a beautiful patio, plenty of seating, books to read and even a garage door that can let in the sun and breeze. Plus it still has great coffee and delicious snacks. I do agree with a few others that the service can be a bit slow. It really is just an easily fixed staffing issue. I came during a Sunday bike ride and the place was surprisingly busy. But with just two staff members (one making a sandwich and the other making complicated coffee drinks), it took me a good 15-20 minutes just to get a pastry. But I wasn't too worried about time since I was just revisiting the hang-out days of my youth.

The Brazil roast is awesome in both regular and decaf varieties. Sadly I am giving them four stars instead of five because they are frequently sold out of the Brazil roast because it's so good.

Pains me to write this considering I have really been trying to love this place from the day it opened. Simple fact is the staff is AWFULL (save for a few and that's why it gets 2 stars because a few are really nice) but Jesus what the hell! Rude seemed bothered to do their jobs and have no idea how to make ANY drinks. I have continued to go here knowing im getting sub par coffee at high prices but hey gotta support local business right. After this morning... NEVER AGAIN....

When I found myself in need of a coffeeshop while driving around North Denver... I discovered Common Grounds via Yelp (trusty Yelp never fails! ^^). So, thrilled to find this gem of a coffeehouse. They seem to have a wide selection of beverages and casual bites. And the interior space is fantastic! It's beautifully designed & flooded with natural light. A wonderful place to plop down for a bit of work, reading, or a convo with friends over a latte. :)

I like Common Grounds, but in a neighborhood where Huckleberry and Black Eye exist, Common Grounds ends up third on my list. The space is gorgeous and definitely a nice place to hangout or get some work done but the experience always leaves something to be desired. Basically, I'll go to Common Grounds if I'm with someone who's used to Starbucks and wants some fancy sugar drink because the menu at Common Grounds is pretty big and they can make all of that stuff, but the employees can seem a little inattentive (why are they always facing the other way and why does it always seem like they're doing that on purpose??) and I can't for the life of me figure out why they don't serve to-go drinks in recyclable cups. I will say that I like their food options though! I'm kind of dreaming of that breakfast burrito right now and I've also had some amazing quiche and a killer croissant breakfast sandwich. Overall, not a bad coffee shop at all!

I dig it! It's close to home (which is wicked convenient). Folks are nice, cute little seating area. A tasty array of muffins and coffees and a few breakfast burritos & some lunch items as well. Their breakfast burritos are sometimes inconsistent -- I've had them on back to back days and the spice level and size were noticeably different -- but it's important to me to support a local business, and I like the people there. Besides, I'M SUPER IMPORTANT AND THEY'LL READ MY YELP REVIEW. But really the burritos are superb handheld breakfast items. They make great ones! It's a good little spot, fun neighborhood coffee shop. I like going there. You know, for coffee and stuff.

I am surprised Common Grounds does not have more reviews. It's coffee, teas, food and service are all solid. I tend to stick to iced drinks when I come here solely because I grab a seat on the patio whenever possible. I will say that I have seen this place get really busy so, finding a seat can be a challenge if you are coming with a larger group. The staff is always friendly and happy to give suggestions on drinks. Lately, my go-tos have been the mango iced tea (free refills) and the breakfast burritos!

What a great coffee shop! Visiting from out of town and found this gem. Great service and friendly staff. Breakfast sandwich was really good, as was latte. Loved the atmosphere. One odd thing on tables was sign saying if going to be at table for long periods of time would need to order something every 2 hours.

Personally I miss the old location. It was cozy and welcoming. This new location doesn't have couches and it kinda reminds me of a lunch room. The tables are for a dining room setting and there isn't much selection. Especially when it's busy one table with four chairs is taking by one person and their laptop. The ambience is lame. The staff seems nice and my Chai was good but nothing like Starbucks.

Came here looking for a quite place to do some research and drink a good latte. I had been here once before so I knew the lattes were decent, I saw this time that they had an Oreo latte. I tried it, it ended up being pretty good but I think I will just stick with the regular lattes. The place always has a small crowd there, the customer service has always been good and they are really nice. There's free WiFi, plenty of street parking, bathrooms are clean, and always fairly quite if you're reading from their library.

This place is amazing I live down the st I enjoy coming here for the Almond Joy Latte it's delicious. This is also a great place to sit out on the patio along with your dog and work on some homework!!!

The lattes taste the way they should i.e., I can actually taste the espresso. The big name chain down the street has seemed to have lost that in my opinion. Love this place.

I think this place is a product of their own success, the coffee is good but I usually have to leave as there are no tables to sit at. Great coffeehouse for the coffee and pastry options, however. They also have a nice patio which will be nice on warm days.

I've been to Common Grounds a few times now, and I have to say that I'm a fan. While I usually go to places that have pour overs (or boilermakers...), this coffee shop has a certain local charm that I can't get over. Maybe it's the smiles that greet me when I walk in, or the assortment of tables/chairs, or the large windows that keep the interior bright, but whatever it is, I see myself coming back again and again. The employees are always really friendly, and I never feel like I'm unwelcome. As menial as that sounds, I can't tell you how many times I walk into a chain coffee place and feel like they're just trying to get me out of there as fast as they can. It's great because you can get coffee, beer, sandwiches, and ice cream all in one spot. No matter what you're in the mood for, you can probably get it here. The coffee is your standard brewed coffee and you serve yourself (I believe it's one free refill in the price of the coffee). Not to mention they have free wifi if you're trying to study or work, and there is ample seating inside and out.

I'm so glad that Common Grounds took up residence in Sunnyside. In fact it's just down the street from my house and that makes me happy. Not only is it growing the neighborhood, but it's bringing more business to it. I went to the old location a couple times and enjoyed myself. Now that it has moved into my hood I've been much more. I can say without a doubt I love the new location and the building. It's much easier to find a parking spot than the other location and close enough for me to walk, but on my first visit I was a little unimpressed. Upon entering and walking up to the counter. Not a single person in front of me mind you. I immediately noticed that the girl who was going to take my order was much more interested in having a conversation with her friends than even acknowledging my presence. I must have stood there for ten minutes before she even noticed me. In that time I learned that she wanted to move to New York and couldn't stand how unhip Denver was in comparison. When she finally noticed me and took my order she didn't even bother to stop talking to her friends who were still hanging off to the side. I mean seriously, just show a little interest in me as a customer, It doesn't have to be much. Aside from the interaction with her the coffee was great. I'll definitely be back since it's so close to my house, but I won't expect as much in the quality service area.

I work really close to the new location, and I actually met my boss for the first time at the recently closed common grounds. I do like the new space that you are located in better because of the space, and because of the pull doors. Today I was there and the roasting coffee smelt burnt(not that I'm the queen of roasting) but, they had to pull open one of the doors and today it was only 30 degrees out. My boyfriend and I left because of this. But before we were greeted with great service and had some really good food. Every other time I have eaten here I have not ran into this problem, the only thing I don't personally like is if you pay with a card it asks you to tip, and it gives unreasonable tipping amounts- I'm sorry but if you don't "wait" on me you dont deserve to be tipped 20%. I'm more than willing to tip, I just don't think it should be made a public thing. (the cashier watching you down) BUT please don't get me wrong, they still provide great service and offer and great space. I love the coffee, tea, sandwiches and ICE CREAM! I will continue to keep coming, and I would recommend this place to locals.

Love this place! Totally laid back atmosphere, fast wifi and friendly staff. Coffee is roasted in house and the drip is great. Nice to find a non-pretentious coffee shop in Denver. Plenty of seating, garage doors, patio, ample parking, HUGE selection of loose leaf teas, open late (9pm), family friendly, ice cream, beer, wine, food, dog treats for your pups, farmers market next door, and the list goes on! 22+ years in business and still going strong. Give it a try!

I really like the new space. Not too big, not too little. The old spot always felt a bit musty and a bit unclean... The new location is great for small meetings or cranking out some work. There is just enough background noise and activity for a good backdrop for some work on your laptop.

I liked it here a lot. Good lattes. Good breakfast burritos and assorted sandwiches and cookies. Great service. Good communal space to read or chat or do work at. very chill place. Good assortment of different folks. Great chick lit books on their shelves to waste the day away with.

Very good coffee. Very cozy space. Must awesome on a warm day with the garage doors open. Friendly staff. Free Wi-Fi. I really want to be here when the coffee roaster is operating. This machine looks incredible. Lots of levers. Humungous gas pipe. The one downside is the food. Made somewhere else (for the most part).

You know, I really like this place. It is completely unpretentious, has plenty of space for hanging out, and they also have ice cream. The coffee is decent, nothing to write home about. They have both soy and almond milk for those of us who are difficult.

Thank heavens! A coffeehouse in Sunnyside - and an awesome one. I like it here even more than their old location in WHighland. Plenty of fresh baked goods, and very good sandwiches. Liks ice cream, teas, juices. And really excellent coffee! I love it when the Kenyan roast is on tap. Wish they would invest in some new tables, or at least some leveling pads on the legs/feet. Lost one cuppa and nearly a second on another visit due to unsteady tables.

Just back from my first visit on the Opening Day for Common Grounds in their new location. The coffee (large latte) was excellent, as was the Lemon Blueberry coffee cake. The staff were friendly and happy. The space is enjoyable and filled with books, comfortable tables and good volume. It will be an excellent place to work or visit with friends.

I've only been here a few times. While I enjoy the space after I've settled in, it's the settling in that's a little bit of a problem. First, as other people have mentioned, the workers always have their backs to you when you walk in and you have to stand there awkwardly waiting for them to turn around whenever they feel like it. One time there were two workers on duty and they both had their backs turned. Didn't appear to be working on anything. Very rude/weird. Very polite, however, once they acknowledge you. My first time in, I asked for a scoop of ice cream, and the worker tried to discourage me by saying it was soft. I said that was alright and I was served a perfectly fine scoop. Since it took almost 5 minutes at the ice cream station for the worker to scoop my ice cream, I'm just assuming that she has a hard time with it and thus doesn't want to do it. Also weird. Typical cafe fare here. I thought the sandwiches were overpriced until I was served an unnecessarily large portion with probably three inches of meat (I have tried again and again to reword that and I can't figure out how, so there it is). I am the last person on earth to ever complain about portion size, but they could use half the meat and lower their prices by a few dollars. Just saying. I love the late-night hours. It's a really chill place in the evening. However, I went once on a Saturday afternoon and there were small children consuming coffee drinks (I don't get that) and running around all over the place. Not so good for coffee shop ambience. I will be avoiding this place weekend afternoons.

I love the new location in Sunnyside which is must larger and more open and airy compared with their previous West Highland location. The coffee is excellent. My only suggestion would be to expand the breakfast offering and to take out some table and add a cozier area with comfortable chairs, sofa etc.

    (4)
  • Rob K.

Meh. I'll start with the positive. The coffee is still excellent, so the quality of the actual product hasn't changed since their move from Highlands. The building is pretty cool looking, especially from the inside. High ceilings, skylights, and the outside patio is a nice addition. However, the location and ambience of the new place, didn't really do it for me. The graffiti on the side of their building wasn't the welcome wagon I expected. The patio is cool, but the view, not so much. The best comparison I can come up with is the new Tattered Cover on Colfax compared to the old Tattered Cover down in Cherry Creek. I'm sure the rent is a lot cheaper, I get it. I might give it another shot (no pun intended) somewhere down the road. Throw in a few couches and comfy chairs, a few murals on the walls, and give me a reason to hang out for a while.

I was bummed when CG left the Highlands, BUT when I came by the new space today in Sunnyside I'm loving it even more! The beautiful garage doors open on a nice warm day. Still great coffee, nice ambiance, and I don't have to wear skinny jeans and gauged ear rings to sit here like some other (overly) hip Denver coffee shops. It's great!

  • Christopher B.

I liked their coffee. I loved how spacious and bright the interior is. They had a music on at a nice volume, which made this conducive for either work (me) or conversing. There is also wifi here, which is essential if you need to do some type of work. I really liked the giant coffee roaster and the spell gets me every time. It's pretty close to the perfect coffee shop all the way around. I'm very happy I decided on this place.

  • E L A.

I used to live in Denver and loved going to the old location on 32nd. I couldn't wait for the new one to open so I could check it out. I return to Denver monthly and always make time to go to CG. Finally made it to the new site and was sadly disappointed. The new building is great, the space is open but the service is terrible. Too bad the new CG has taken on the new hipster style of service - meaning they are doing you a favor by acknowledging you after long waits when there is no else waiting and being rude in a "too cool" kind of way. Get over yourself baristas. The old hippy way was better and seemed to attract more old school local folks too. They have probably moved on to Taza de Cafe. The coffee is great but places like Taza, Pablo's, Stella's and St. Mark's serve wonderful coffee too and the service is better. I won't be going out of my way to visit CG anytime soon.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt and guess that some staffers no showed after partying at Phish the night before, but not a good look having one person run the show on Saturday morning. Otherwise, great coffee and beautiful space. A long, prosperous life for them once they it gets some of those opening kinks straightened out.

I like this neighborhood coffee shop. Great coffee, good food, friendly environment. You can sit inside or out. There are games for the kids. They just started serving wine and beer. Free WiFi. Great place to hangout with family and friends.

Sadly not impressed. Living a block away I was so excited to have a coffee shop in the neighborhood, but...... I've yet to be greeted within a minute...much less 4. Ever since my first visit, I time it every time I go in. They always have their backs to the counter, and when they do acknowledge you, you barely get a hello. I keep giving them another chance, after all they are new and still learning. But being in the service industry I know that a quick hello and smile go a long way. Unfortunately the service is as stale as their food!

Just stopped in to the relocated Common Grounds coffee house, now in the Sunnyside at 2139 W 44th Ave (44th & Vallejo). Got an Arnold Palmer, a great book of old photographs of NW Denver, and a warm welcome feeling there. The space is light and inviting. Stop in to see them if you're in the neighborhood.

I like this place. Free internet and lots of outlets make it easy to work. The coffee is good and the barristas are always friendly. They're open 'til 11, which is nice for late-night working. Or...they have beer, so you don't have to work. ;) And on Saturday mornings there's a farmers' market next door.
