Far better than ANY other mexican food in Denver! Benny's might have the margaritas but Cafe Chihuahua has the best food- and the price is so reasonable that even in this crappy recession you can afford to eat there every night!

Not bad. Had the tampequeno. It was descent, but no jalapeño, and there was only one type of salsa they had. When i travel to Mexico the salsa selection is always amazing, and even similiar restaurants in the states seem to have a good salsa selection, and here that was lacking. So as far as authenticity goes, its close. Service was ok. Overall, it was an average experience for me.

Seriously, what a gem. My boyfriend and I were on a hunt for a solid Mexican breakfast and we definitely found what we were looking for here! The food was incredibly affordable and the service was excellent. It seemed to be a family run restaurant which always seems like a good sign to me. I ordered the huevos rancheros and my boyfriend ordered the stuffed sopapilla plate. I saw that there were empanadas in the window, I wish I had room to try them, but I was SO stuffed! We will be making a trip back!

I like how they use home made beans instead of canned. I got the chile relleno and cheese enchilada smothered in green chili. It was good.

Been here twice now with my Great Uncle. Fantastic and, at least to my very white taste buds, authentic Mexican American food. The chile relleno is perfect and egg battered, not that wonton wrapped nonsense I keep finding everywhere else in Denver. The burritos are stuffed full, the chips are fresh, the menudo fragrant and plentiful. Highly recommended

This is the second time I've been here the first time was okay this time I really wasn't my menudo was overcooked also I had a guacamole tostada you really can't mess that up..... it just had no flavor also I asked for a small bowl they gave me a large bowl and charged me for a large bowl??????

First off, I've been coming to this restaurant since it was a tiny hole-in-the-wall establishment with about eight tables and one television that played telenovelas round the clock. Over the years, they have remodeled and now offer a large dining room, a patio bar and patio eating along with several flat screen TVs to watch any and all sports games. One thing has not changed over the years, however, and that is the quality of the food and the cheap prices. Cafe Chihuahua is easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in South West Denver. They offer an extensive menu of traditional Mexican cuisine: everything from menudo and seafood soups, to a variety of burritos and tacos. No Mexican dining experience is complete without Margaritas, and they do not disappoint. Their green chili is my favorite part of any meal and they offer it in mild, hot and extra hot. Their beans are also some of the best in the neighborhood (a step above Torres). I've tried nearly everything on the menu (short of the hamburgers....) and I have enjoyed it all. I'm particularly fond of the combo plates, where I can get a burrito, taco, and enchilada with beans and rice for less than $8. Although their exterior and interior have changed over the years, the atmosphere remains much the same. It's a great place to stop by on the weekend with your entire family or pop in early in the morning before work for a quick breakfast. It's a family owned and run restaurant, and the servers are friendly and very accommodating. I highly recommend stoping in for breakfast. Their breakfast menu is diverse with steak and eggs, traditional breakfast burritos, omelets and even pork chops and eggs with green chili. The breakfast is more affordable than most fast food (you can have a breakfast burrito and coffee for the same price as Starbucks), and significantly more satisfying. The only downside, I would say, would be parking. Although they have a private lot, when they are busy it fills up quickly and you may have to park behind the restaurant or in the lot next door. When I moved away from Denver, I missed Chihuahua's Mexican food the most, and it was always the first place I went out to eat when I visited home. Now that I'm back in town, you can probably find me there every Sunday afternoon with my family, enjoying some cheese enchiladas and a corona. I may be a bit biased, since I practically grew up in this restaurant, but it is one place in Denver you should not pass up!

This is an excellent authentic Mexican restaurant near the Denver/Englewood border. Their breakfast burritos are incredible! The service is wonderful, and their take out option is convenient and fast. Overall, this place is great!

The food here is good, it can be a little hit and miss but usually it is right on. The have happy hour deals and here is the best part....Kids eat for a penny on Tuesdays!!!! I even hesitate to share that information because I can always get in right away. The staff is friendly and sweet and we always have a great time here.

The food here is great. The service however is hit or miss. Sometime you can wait 30-45 mins on your food on a busy night. Their waitresses are really good or really bad. The establishment knows which waitresses have friendly service and the ones that have poor service but they refuse to get rid of the bad apples. The place has gone through expansions and upgrade. This place still needs to be remodeled, especially the restrooms. Come for the food but don't expect much from service. Last note, stay away from the empanadas! Go down the street to a real bakery for that.

Might as well eat at taco bell! Their sauce tastes the exact same!!!! Plus, you would save money! Their food quality is roach-coach at best.

I am always looking for good mexican and it seems like lately I find a decent or a trendy mexican restaurant but Cafe Chihuahua was a pleasant surprise! It was so good! The margs are delicious and so was the queso fundido and carnita burrito. The service was awesome and our food came so fast. The prices are also great! I would strongly recommend this place!

This is by far one of the best little mom & pop Mexican restaurants around Denver. Their food is amazing, fresh and the pork is delicious. They have reasonable prices and professional, friendly service. Don't miss this place.

Nice place with great service. I have been here many times and tried a variety from the menu and no complaints. Everything seems to be consistently good.

We had the posole and asada tacos both of which were amazing! Service was friendly if a bit lackluster but that works for me.

Cafe Chihuahua may look a little ominous from the outside, but it certainly has earned the 4 1/2 star rating on Yelp. The food is good, not amazing, but good. Probably one of the better Mexican restaurants in Denver. I ordered the Carnitas Puerca, a slow-cooked pork dish. The tortillas were homemade, the green chili flavorful and the pork smoky and tender. While I can't say the presentation was the best, everything on my plate was delicious, even the beans and rice. Seems like cleanliness is a fairly high priority in this restaurant. Service was not the best, but not bad either. I'm just sad we got here so late because we didn't have time to order dessert. But I shall be back.

If this is some of the best Mexican in Denver, then I've been right on the mark that Denver has overall TERRIBLE food establishments. That's not to say the food here was bad (it isn't). It's middle of the road based on my experiences with Mexican food (as a white boy who grew up in the middle of Wyoming). I have to agree with the other reviewers that the place is clean, they speak english (an issue in this part of town, I live 4 blocks away and run into a few places that were spanish only), the serving sizes are huge (WAY more than one person should eat at a sitting), and the prices VERY reasonable. I don't think I've bought a $2 beer in close to a decade... and a $2 margarita? My wife liked it and said it had some kick, anyway our dinner bill was just over $18. The service wasn't "johnny on the spot", but I've had worse here in Denver while paying LOTS more money. This is the first establishment in Denver, that's not a chain (wendys, subway, etc..), where I know we'll go back ~ which should speak volumes.

One of my favorite places! Great food and service and their taco salad with pork is to die for. Never a disappointment. Reasonable prices and friendly smiles. I find myself driving across town to dinner at least every other week, if possible.

When I die, I want to be reborn as a corn tortilla here, just on the off chance that someone might give me the opportunity for a full-body spooning with their carnitas. Seriously. If it weren't so frowned upon in this polite society of ours, I'd saunter right up to whatever pig they were planning to slice up and fry, and give him a nice little snuggle. Can I possibly overstate how good their carnitas are??

I've passed by this place so many times through out my day to day routine and decided to try it. It took them awhile for them to notice us in the front. When we got seated I ordered the chicken burrito and I must say the chicken tasted dirty it was just gross. I returned and explained I didn't like it they didn't charge me but I will not come to this place again

I have to disagree with some of the earlier reviewers who have said that Cafe Chihuahua has the best or Most authentic Mexican food in town; in reality it has neither. That being said, it does have tasty food at almost unbelievably low prices. The service was top notch even though the place was already jumping by 11:30. I am excited to go back for breakfast given their advertised Steak and Eggs breakfast for only $3.50!

i rarely give less than 4 or 5 stars but this one gets a 3. we went to cafe chihuahua last night around 6pm based on a recommendation from a friend and because it's close to home...always looking for good mexican food in the neighborhood. the food was good, for sure. the service was unfortunately horrible. we got seated by the hostess and hadn't been helped after 10 minutes of sitting there. the busser came over and asked us if we wanted something to drink. he brought us our drinks and then 10 minutes later (no exaggeration) we still hadn't been helped. i went up front and asked who our server was and we were told that they were busy and that somebody would be with us shortly. we then watched him tell our server to be that we needed to be helped and she blew him off. 5 minutes later our waitress came over and apologized (kinda) and said they were busy...yeah, restaurants get busy and we didn't expect the best service in the world but that was pretty unacceptable. we got our food relatively quickly and it was good and the prices were very reasonable. not sure if we'll go back but if we do i'll update as to if the service is any better.

By far the best Mexican Food in the neighborhood. Love their Burritos and their Huevos Rancheros. But the last few times service has become horrible. What puzzles me is it is the same people. They are just not as polite and fast as they were when we first started going to Cafe Chihuahua's over a year ago.

On par with Las Margaritas and Benny's, this place is great; clean, comfy booths, big plates, great chips, and good salsa. I had the Carne Adobada: so delicious. Warm, doughy flour tortillas. Negra Modello. Life is good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
