Had a great experience here last night, and partially based on a 'bad' dish... We ordered some cocktails (wonderful) and the special app, sort of a Cajun-style arancini (really tasty). When our main dishes arrived (on ridiculously large plates) I got a super strong vinegar smell. It was the sauce on the plate and some small veg on the plate. I tasted it and it was very brutal. The meat, though, was just sitting in it and didn't have much on it, so it tasted good. My husband suggested I move my meat to sour side dish plate (Brussels sprouts), which I did and was happily eating my short ribs. My surprise came when I told the waitress why I moved my entree. My husband watched her take the dish directly to one of he owners who was on site, and explain my issue. We then saw him smell the dish, and take it directly to the kitchen. He then stopped by to check on us, agree that the sauce was not done right, and made sure I was still happy with the rest of the dish. What a superbly professional server to not just be ok that I was still eating my dish, but to go the extra mile to inform the owner. And what a great owner to come by, admit the sauce was not right, and let us know they were going to fix it. Couldn't ask for more from a restaurant! We will definitely be back!

Beautiful interior. Really excellent service. Cool menu. Just wasn't jazzed about the meal itself. I did like the charcuterie plate. Everything else was just ok to me. We had speciality oysters, wedge salad, a bacon flight, and the charcuterie plate. Nothing really wowed me.

My husband and I went to Block and Larder for our 5th anniversary and will likely not be back again. The dining room wasn't even half full when we arrived, yet we received subpar service throughout the whole meal. We started with ordering salads, which were brought out fairly promptly. Unfortunately, our entrees and two shareable sides were brought out about 2 minutes after the salads. Due to having 6 oversized plates plus drinks on our two-top table, there was absolutely no open space to even set our silverware down between bites which made things a bit awkward and uncomfortable. The server that brought out the food gave us an "I'm sorry" look, but proceeded to set all of our food down anyway. I ordered the Short Ribs - the Short Ribs were tasty, but the accompanying sauce was flavorless. My husband ordered the Hangar Steak which was brought out cold. For sides, we ordered the Hunt & Gather mushrooms and Brussel Sprouts and Pig Candy. The Hunt & Gather mushrooms had an off flavor and the presentation made the mushrooms look like a bowl of gravy. The Brussel Sprouts were the saving grace of the meal and were quite tasty. Based on the price point of this restaurant, I would expect significantly better service than what we received and better food, as well. I recently went to Guard and Grace - the service and food were phenomenal. Next anniversary, we'll be going there!

Awesome, rustic, spot on cooking. Kentucky fried chicken has nothing on the fried chicken I had at block and larder. This place is a cool find amidst the hustle and bustle of this strip on Tennyson. Everything feels down to earth yet upscale at the same time. Excellent wine list. Lots of mouth watering options. I read about the fried chicken from other yelp reviews and it did not disappoint. Often I worry it will be greasy but instead crisp and clean. The Brussels sprouts were a nice side. Friendly service and good wine options. Definitely a solid place and I'd love to return.

This place is gooood. Really, really good. The interior is beautiful--classic elements like exposed brick, tin ceiling tiles, and lots of wood mixed with more modern elements like bicycle chain covered light fixtures. The lighting is low, and my husband and I got to sit in a comfortable, cozy booth. The gas fireplace and orange accent wall add to the warm, cozy feeling. The service and drink selections are outstanding. The cocktails are He-man inspired; He-man of 80s fame. The drink selections also include whiskey, bourbon, tequila, great wine and beer lists, and even a couple of cider options, including one of my favorites, Grasshop-ah. The food is best of all though. We tried the roasted garlic with bread, house truffle fries, broasted chicken with Louisiana honey sauce, and the blueberry donut. The roasted garlic with bread was three thick slices of warm, densely delicious bread slathered with roasted garlic. I'm not a truffle person, so I didn't have many of the fries, but they're a generous serving of thin and crispy fries with herbs. The term "broasted" was new to me. I assumed that broasting was a cooking style that was a cross between broiling and roasting, but I was wrong. Broasting is a frying method. An excellent frying method: this was maybe the best fried chicken I've ever had. The chicken wasn't greasy, had a good crunch, and was so moist inside. The Louisiana honey sauce was so good and spicy. The half chicken order comes with a drumstick, wing, thigh, and breast, plenty for two people. The proteins here are good for sharing. You order the sides separately, which I love. I can't forget dessert--the donut. Big, fun, and so delicious--crispy on the outside, dense and moist on the inside, and a great combination of flavors. A most definite homerun, and they're not officially open yet. Not sure when the official opening date is (so excited by our meal that I forgot to ask!), so call before heading there.

I can't even begin to explain how pumped I am that there's a steakhouse type restaurant on Tennyson! This place is exactly what Tennyson needed with the new American flare. You can come here and get a steak, or a burger, fish or pork chops and have some seriously good sides like brussels sprouts, truffle fries, meat and cheese board, etc... While this place is far different than the owners first restaurant, Fresh Craft, one thing the two have in common are a bustling bar scene. The bar scene here is sheikh and modern. Long wide area with a standing long tall boy for bar goers to place their drink and chat. There's booths and tall tables as well. There's a lot of really interesting cocktails, beers and wine selections. My date got the sword of power (or something like that) and they had smoked the water overnight to make the ice cubes!! Literally, this drink was made for hours and it cost $10, unreal!! To eat, we started with the panzanella, which was divine! Fresh with the basil and tomato and yummy with the fried bread balls, balsamic and cheese. Our server recommended it and it was a hit! We also had the truffle fries, burger and brussels sprouts. Also excellent choices. The service was friendly and quick. Three different staff members stopped by to check on us. My only beef with this place is the prices are a bit steep and not really the Tennyson prices we're all used to. But, we will definitely return here and try some of the other menu items.

Holy crap y'all. This is some seriously good food. The peppered ribeye special? Fantastic. Crispy confit duck legs? Holy smokes. Fried half chicken? Shut the front door. (Our party all shared bites). Sauces: the Louisiana hot honey on the chicken was great. Tried the harissa BBQ, and it was just okay. Brown mustard glaze was like a very classy honey mustard. Sides: Mushrooms were good, but some at our table thought they were a little over-seasoned. Creamed greens were solid. Brussels sprouts with pig candy were quite good. But you guys, seriously -- SERIOUSLY -- the "baconloaded potato fonduda" is a small miracle. They've basically taken a loaded baked potato and pureed it with cheese to make a ridiculously great hybrid of the cheesiest potato soup you've ever had. It's absurd. It comes with toasted bread, but we also dipped pork rinds in it with great results. I wanted to put some on my fried chicken as a gravy, but it ran out too fast, yet I know deep down in the fibers of my blood cells that this combination would have ruled. Hard. So this is my gift to you, humanity: GET THE FRIED CHICKEN AND SMOTHER IT WITH POTATO FONDUDA. I suspect there is a very good chance it will change your life. (Or hey, Block & Larder staff, if you're reading this -- offer this as an option. In no time you will be plagued with the burden of finding places to stash the huge piles of money people will be throwing at you.) Dessert: Our dinner was a birthday celebration, and we got the blueberry doughnut. I think we all had modest expectations -- it is, after all, just a doughnut, right? -- but this is a FIERCELY GOOD doughnut. Super crispy exterior, good depth of flavor, big enough for 5 people to get substantial bites. We were all legitimately shocked at how good that doughnut was. Finally, the atmosphere rode the line of hip and fresh without crossing over into hipster. The tables are spaced enough that on busy nights, the volume probably isn't too bad. Really good experience overall. We will definitely be back.

Block & Larder has a great menu and amazing cocktails. The restaurant and bar is modern rustic, with a relaxed, casual but hip atmosphere. We ordered oysters, the espresso steak fries, mushrooms and burgers. I also got the Duckworth off their cocktail menu and it was strong and tasty. We sat at the bar (because it was late during the week) and the bartender was friendly and provided attentive service. We'll definitely be back!

This was our second visit, and while the food is tasty, the service is perhaps the worst in Denver, or anywhere for that matter. If it were possible to give less than one star, this would be it. In their location, you have to ask why are they nearly empty on a Saturday evening?... Or why the staff nearly outnumbers the clientele, yet it's almost impossible to get the attention of someone that works here. Even when you place your order, it's slow. Appetizers are slow, followed by a long wait for entrees that don't make it at the same time for the whole table. We had hoped that service would have improved from our first visit. It didn't. As such, despite the creative flavors and options, we would not recommend Block and Larder. There are many other options steps away. Unlike other reviews, it's not worth commenting on the quality, portions or tastiness of the food. The zombie-like service counters anything good you could say, and this is after two experiences. If there are kitchen problems, communicate that. If you are understaffed, acknowledge your patrons with a "be right with you". Basics people, basics. Good luck if you decide to give them a try. And good luck to the proprietors. You all will need it.

Nice deco and friendly staff but not my typical kind of joint. They have a decent beer selection but I wasn't hugely hungry so I ordered a bowl of Red Curry Consommé, well serves me right for not knowing wtf that actually is ha! It was very tasty water, should of gotten the chowder :o)

Okay, I kind of feel like this place deserves another visit before I officially make up my mind. I stopped in with my friend last night and we'd already eaten dinner. Mistakes! The food here looks divine. But I only saw it, but I'm intrigued. Anywaaaay. This place has a great vibe. I felt comfortable and relaxed the entire time we were here. The bar is rad--I love how they have their liquor on display. The fireplace is a bit weird, since people can't really sit around it, but this place has a great ambiance. Their beer/liquor list is great. I had the Leopold Bros Apple Whiskey and it was amazing. The yummiest drink I had all night. I realize I ordered straight whiskey and that's not the most difficult to make, but the pour seemed generous and I appreciated the variety. So, it was my friend's birthday so we got dessert. We were intrigued by the blackberry creme brûlée. Um...it wasn't bad? But it had granola all over it and it kinda reminded me of something I would eat for breakfast. The staff here was nice. At first the waitress (Bre I think) seemed a bit cold, but by the end of our time there she warmed up and she was nice. Also there was a guy (maybe the owner or manager) who was really friendly and attentive. I'm definitely coming back here, because the food looks too damn good. I hope that'll help me bump this to 4 stars.

First time in this restaurant on Sunday night, 6/14/2015. I was immediately impressed with the attentive service and the ambiance of the place. The menu is very creative without being pretentious unlike other eateries in the Denver area (...Lower48?...) Great starters, large salads suitable for sharing, a deep and varied main course menu, a great wine list, extensive drink offerings. I highly recommend giving Block & Larder a try. Plus, the emerging Tennyson scene is a fun place to hang out. Think South Pearl Street or Old South Gaylord 30 years ago.

I have nothing but good things to say about this place! The food was great but what really put this place over the top was the service and atmosphere. Get the pork belly, it is unbelievable - texture and taste are both perfectly on point. The restaurant is airy and well laid out and our bartender/server, Shannon, was incredible. I honestly can't wait to get back!

Yum. That's all I have to say about the pork belly on the "Nosh" section of their menu. I also had the truffled goat cheese, crispy duck confit and tried the house smoked mozzarella. Once I realized each dish came with bread - I requested they leave it off the plate and it made it a more reasonable portion for one person. If you're ordering them as shared plates - it would definitely be a healthy hors d'oeuvre for a group. The only criticism I have is that the duck was a little salty for my tastes, and I like salt. The wine I has was also very good, the atmosphere was friendly and I really enjoyed chatting with the bartender and the other patrons. I am very excited to go back and try brunch.

Denver's brunch scene is crowded with competition. This morning, there were waits at all of the established places (root down, lola, universal etc.) so I decided to give this place a try. The fried chicken is astoundingly good and very sizable portions. Wait staff was courteous and the coffee was always available. I have to say, the name was a turn off at first though. The word larder doesn't sound terribly appealing. I went in a skeptic and came out a believer. Nice work!

The Block & Larder is new in my hood, and having heard tales of glorious meats and other such foods, I had to stop in with friends! It's a pretty interesting vibe. A little BDSM chic, what with all the chains hanging... BUt it's a cool space. I like the exposed wood and things that look upcycled. I don't know if it is or not, but I think it's well done. Our server, however, also seemed to be well-done. He wasn't very communicative, barely attentive, didn't seem to have any friendliness or energy in him for actually engaging with his guests. We saw him spending a lot of time with another table, and perhaps that's why it took 11 minutes for us to get two rocks pours and a old fashioned. Alas. $11 for a rocks pour of top-shelf bourbon is about right, I guess. It kinda stinks to see downtown and LoHi prices on Tennyson, but that's the price of progress and gentrification, no? I also ordered the "Bacon Flight" for $6 which was essentially 3 strips of bacon each cut in half. There was nary a mention-worthy discernible difference between the three, except one of them may have been turkey bacon. Basically I paid $2/strip for unremarkable bacon. I had a sad. So we're on an overpriced and underwhelming theme here, and that was only tempered by the atmosphere. Good vibe, and cool place, but unfortunately the weirdest issue was when my roommate requested a certain amount be put on his card, (splitting checks is fun, yay!) and the server simply didn't listen, and put an entirely different amount on his card. It was just...odd. Rather than extend the already-too-long time we spent there, he just signed his card and left. It was only a $6 difference, not huge, but it fit with how "not with it" our server seemed that night. I saw a lot of food go by to other tables that looked really, really great. So there's a good chance I'll be back to sample other things on the menu and some of their He-Man themed cocktails, but I can't say I'm going to be running back any time soon.

23JUL2015 + Lamb Shank. Fell off the bone. Low in fat. Huge portion. Curry cream sauce. + Fries. I swear they coat them with the fried chicken batter. Awesome. 31DEC2014 A wonderful early dinner. Prosecco ($20) and a dozen oysters ($12) was an ocean-fresh way to start. The fried chicken ($14) is "to die for". A very crispy skin and moist tender meat. The sweet potato gnocchi had perfect semi-sweet taste. They were a tad heavy. Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée is a bargain at $30. Service was perfect. From host thru all 3 servers. 02DEC2014 Ate lunch on a sunny Tuesday afternoon during their soft opening. Very much recommended. + Zardetto Prosecco for $20/bottle. A good value. + Medium-weight Walco flatware. + Hefty cloth napkins. Which I needed for my burger. + Background music was interesting and unobtrusive. + The wine list has wines in the 20s. + Wi-Fi. + Windows in front open up to the street. + Warm atmosphere and temperature. + Trendy pendant lights with Edison bulbs. + Service was efficient and friendly. The burger was tasty. Almost too tasty with too many different flavors going on. Next time I will order without the Lemon Aioli. Crispy fries. Parking will be painful, but as I walk the 2 blocks to it, I don't care.

Great drinks, excellent meats, and awesome veggie options. I had the best version of a Sazerac that I've experienced ever. The whiskey cocktail options are bountiful and interesting. The drink names drop references nods to He-Man, and after three of these drinks you'll feel like charging Greyskull in a loin cloth. We went with the consumme, the play on the bruschetta, and the burger. All were delicious, so next time we'll try the stuffed tomatoes and steak.

Delicious!! I had the crispy duck legs with the candy bacon Brussel sprouts and my dinner companion had the fried chicken. Both were superb. Service is a bit slow so you may sit a bit with an empty glass waiting for something to drink. We can't wait to return so we can continue to explore the menu.

Fantastic food! I shouldn't have to say anymore than that to get you to give them a try, but here goes. The Brussel Sprouts where so good that we cleaned those plates in seconds. Each of the side items we tried were fantastic, so I recommend you go with a couple a friends so you can order and share several side dishes. It's the best way to try the menu! The staff was great and attentive, even though they were very busy that night. The atmosphere is casual but still classy. Don't worry, we were all in Jeans and fit in just fine.

Wow. I am not really sure what else to say because this was a phenomenal dining experience from beginning to end!!! A group of 9 of us met for a friend's birthday dinner here last night and I don't think a single person was not impressed - many saying it was the best meal they have had in a very long time and I would have to agree. To start we ordered the bacon flight - yes, a bacon flight - and it was ridiculous!! Three different types of amazing bacon-y goodness! This is a good-sized app for 2-3 people. We also got the cheese flight and also amazing but clearly the hands-down favorite was the bacon. For dinner, we covered a large chunk of the menu between the 9 of us. A majority of us got different steaks - I had one of the specials which was the Steak Frites and seriously, when this steak came out I laughed at how enormous it was because we had just got done giving one of the girls a hard time of the enormity of the fried chicken dish that had just been placed in front of her. The portions are no joke! The dishes are al a carte - although mine came with fries - so we decided to give the mushrooms and the loaded mashed potato fondudo a shot. Two words: mind.blown. I cannot even begin to explain what the fondudo was like - we basically likened it to a bacon cheese gravy and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten - ever. It came served with chunks of delicious bread to dip with but I think everything ended up covered in this stuff - steaks, fries, hell at one point my brother was just eating it with his fork! YOU HAVE TO TRY IT! That's really just all I can say. Oh, yea, we also had main dishes :) The steaks were all cooked perfectly - they have a variety of cuts to choose from that are all seasoned/marinated differently. The fried chicken was just insane. My brother - even though he loved his steak - voted the fried chicken his favorite but like I said, we could not say enough about how amazing the food was. The service was also great - glasses never remained empty, our server was more than happy to field our questions and was always available despite the restaurant being quite full. I was surprised to see the negative reviews on here after having such an amazing night so all I can really say is that you need to give it a shot because I know I'm glad we did. I cannot wait to return and I highly HIGHLY recommend it!!!!

The overall experience of this place was nice, our server (Tyler?) was great. We sat at the bar and he was very kind, greeted us promptly and was a pleasant person to talk to, but... The food, oh, the food. We shared fried chicken and despite our neighbors raving review, this was the saltiest pile of salt I have ever salted. And I lovelovelove salt. I could barely get through the meal without constantly looking for water. Our oysters were meh, one of the choices was $4 per oyster and I've had better at the Kitchen, or Humboldt Farm Fish Wine for less. We ordered a few sides to accompany our chicken and even those just felt absolutely coated in salt. I'm still thirsty. I can't imagine I'll give it another shot, simply because I think there's a million places that do this sort of cuisine better, but again, happy with the service and happy to have another new place on Tennyson.

Came here for a Mothers Day Dinner , and couldn't have been happier our server Jonathan was very knowledagble and helpful. We ordered a bunch of different things and shared . The Meat tasting had some real great proscuttios ,sausage , Serrano jelly and the highlight pork belly (i could have had an entire plate of this ) for,the main course we shared the Duck , lamb shank, fried chicken , prawns and brussel sprouts . Everything was cooked perfectly had great presentation and was very filling . For dessert we shared the Orange Chocolate Tort and it to was great I'll be back many times especially for that pork belly

I really like Block & Larder! My husband and I dined here a few weeks ago for my birthday dinner. We came on a Wednesday and had no issues with getting a table. Our waiter was friendly and gave great and attentive service without being overly pushy. We started with the RED CURRY CONSOMMÉ and B&L CHOPPER... Both were very good. For entrees we ordered the BONE IN PORK CHOP and the BISON SHORT RIB along with the SWEET POTATO GNOCCHI and LARDED BRUSSELS SPROUTS. The entrees were cooked perfectly and had very flavorful sauces. The sides, namely the SWEET POTATO GNOCCHI, was outstanding. The highlight of the night? The house-made dessert doughnut... Melt in your mouth, sweet filled, goodness!!! The restaurant is new and, I'm sure, still finding its way... But a couple of tips: 1. Don't sit, after dark, at the bar table parallel to the front door window... The outside spotlight will shine directly in the faces of those sitting on the "north" side of the table (we moved tables). 2. The side dishes are not abundant and pricey for what you receive 3. Don't expect "call brands" of your favorite libations. Block & Larder features craft beer, wine and liquor. NOTE: The drinks were amazing!!! My only complaint (which keeps this from a 5 star review): I ordered a bowl of the RED CURRY CONSOMMÉ and received a cup. That was fine with me and I told the server to adjust the bill. But that remedy was not fine with the manager... He was not going to adjust the bill and brought me a second cup of the soup. I was speechless and our server was embarrassed. All in all, I can't wait to come back (I just won't be ordering any soup)!!!

Good find! Went here with the family. Confit Trio and the bread was a little dry. After that it was really good! Nice wine and cocktails. Yummy cheese selection, very tasty entrees as others have noted and the best creamed kale side ever!

My review is based on brunch only. I got the oyster po'boy and the fried oysters were great. Crispy and still tasted like the ocean. The bread really left a lot to be desired and I ended up just dousing the oysters in delicious hot sauce from Freshcraft. I intend to come back at some point and try the charcuterie, which looks to be their thing, but based on brunch I'm going to say A-OK for now.

Walked in on a Sunday afternoon through the front window. The bartender (owner) looked at me with crazy eyes- I thought I was being sneaky, apparently not. Made our way to the bar and had happy hour drinks and very reasonable priced appetizers. Seriously this place is so reasonable when it comes to its appetizers it blew my socks. I had a great time here and really enjoyed how Aaron was showing his staff new tricks and tips to really enhance their job performance. Live pretty close via my bike so it is likely I will be back pretty soon. Try the apps and happy hour beer- your wallet will thank you!

Yum! Everything was delicious and prepared with care and love. I had the bloody Maria with cilantro. My favorite breakfast beverage in Denver for a while! My sweetheart had oysters on the half shell and oysters Benedict for brunch. The potatoes with his meal with D Lish! I had the Chilaquiles and they were also D Lish! So happy to find a place that serves such delicious food on the west side!!!

Wow! Really great experience - atmosphere is awesome. Attentive service. Nice wine list. Love the Louisiana tones to the menu - nicely done without being heavy handed. Had the special Cajun green beans - with étouffée sauce -- amazing! Stacked salad was flavorful without being too much of either the bacon or cheese. Grilled fish special was amazing only topped by the tomato soup. Loved that everything tasted amazing without being heavy and overdone. Will be back again and again.

Here's my review broken down by one to two-word descriptions that I think fit each category the best: Atmosphere: Cozy. Service: Friendly, informative. Dirty Martini: Wrong glassware. Pickled Vegetables: VINEGAR!!! Gnocchi: Cheesy goodness. Mushrooms: Slightly overcooked. Ribeye: Wow. Fried Chicken: Wow. Sauces: Masterful. Wine list: Brief, but sufficient. Overall it was a great dining experience and I would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the almost inedible pickled vegetables. B&L, your mix is off... less vinegar... more spice. Welcome to the neighborhood!

We are new to the area and have been trying different restaurants in the area and so far this was the most disappointing. 2.5 stars - would not return Nothing was bad but nothing was great, everything was just ok. For the price I was expecting good-great. We got 3 aps - nuts, bacon, and truffle fries The bacon was a total and utter rip off for $9 you get 3 strips of bacon. Now if the bacon was to die for I'm ok with $9 but it was IHOP quality bacon. Truffle fries were overcooked and you could not even taste the truffle flavor. Nuts were the best of the 3. I tried the Hamburger and the Fried Chicken. Hamburger was ok but the Royal next door is better. Fried chicken was also ok but KFC is better. The restaurant is very nice inside our waiter was good but the hostess was rude. Menu has a lot of interesting items but with all the good restaurants located on the same block I would rather eat else where. Again nothing bad but nothing to go back for.

So so good! My roommate and I have been talking about this place, so she offered to take me for my birthday dinner. We decided on drinks and appetizers, so we could try lots of things. We made all good choices! Drinks: She had a dirty martini that she said was great, followed by a delicious old fashioned. I had the I Have the Power, which is bartender's surprise. I told him I liked vodka, not too sweet, and limey, and came back with a vodka, St Germaine, muddled mint, and line drink that was fantastic. He named it The Jenn. The apps: we had sweet potato gnocchi that was just fantastic. Super garlicky, which we both love, with a touch of balsamic that nicely paired with all the garlic. She got oysters, one from MA and one from WA (don't ask me to name them, I don't eat oysters). She said they were awesome, sweet vs salty. Next we got a single plate with duck confit, pork belly, and rilletes. The portions were just right for two people, and at $3-4 each a great deal! The duck was served with (garlicky) crostini, pulled and grilled and just perfect. Really salty (which I don't have a problem with!). The pork belly was seared and glazed with a soy ginger, served with the same (garlicky) crostini, and just plain awesome. Also salty, but duh. Pork belly! Neither one of knew what rilletes was until we asked, and as soon as we heard "chicken pâté" we were sold. Served on house bread Tyra was nice and soft and doughy, the pâté was def my favorite. Creamy and buttery. Pâté and foie gras have become birthday staples - I'd rather have that than a cupcake! And speaking of desserts, after all the salt and garlic (mmmmm), we wanted something sweet. We couldn't decide, so got the blueberry cake donut with pear ice cream and the chocolate cherry torte with candied oranges. Well this was where things went downhill. The donut was so dense, like an overly chewy ciabatta bread. Really hard to eat! The pear ice cream had a very subtle pear flavor, and was the best thing on the plate. They neglected to tell us the choc torte was gluten free (blech! Yuck!) or I wold have ordered the third option (black cherry creme brûlée). It was just not good :( The bartenders def noticed how we inhaled the dinner, but left the desserts untouched, so we were honest (but nice!) about the desserts. That dinner was amaze balls, dessert not so much. The manage came out shortly and had comped the desserts as well as brought us the black cherry creme brûlée to try (also comped). Now that was a good dessert! Topped with a churro that was perfectly fried dough, we ate most of it (both of us were full by then!). The manage mentioned they had been having trouble with desserts and would be changing it up in the next few months. We told him we'd be back regardless!! Def a great addition to Tennyson St

We visited opening week. Definitely kinks to work out with the food. The good: We had the bacon appetizer. That was unique and fun to try. The unmemorable: I ordered the fish. It was ok. Nothing spectacular. The bad: Someone needs to learn how to broast. My husband ordered the chicken. It came out inedible. Eventually learned they served him the rabbit, not the chicken. Waitress got it wrong. Still inedible. The manager insisted we try the chicken. He wanted to get it right. Kudos to him for trying. Then, the chicken came out raw...... There you have it. Going to have to do better than that to survive in Denver's evolving food scene.

Great menu, location, and super friendly/attentive staff! Keep up the great work! Ambiance is that of the cool, hipster foodie places, with creative cocktails! Awesome sliding window that connects guests to the street buzz.

This place might do better as a bar rather than a restaurant. The ambiance and decor are great. The appetizers (bar food) are also good. It seems like it would be a great place to drink a few whiskeys on a cold night. The rest of the menu, entrees and portions, not so good. Prices: too high for what you get. Last call for alcohol is 9:15? Came in after work (around 9) and called my husband to come meet me for some cocktails..the waiter arrived and said order now..last call at 9:15. I called my husband and told him to come to West End instead and left.

We happened upon this place when the wait for Hops and Pie was a little long. The place brands itself as a steakhouse, so everything is priced separately. We shared the beef/pork burger and the pulled pork sandwich, some truffle fries, and the Boy had a $6 steak skewer and some of our fries. There is literally nothing on the menu for kids, which would be understandable for dinner, or if they weren't right on Tennyson, a family saunter mecca. Just my opinion. The Man liked the pulled pork better than the burger. I felt the opposite; the pork was REALLY crispy, overly so. I felt like it was going to cut my mouth. The burger is stuffed with a blue cheese mushroom mixture ( they call it maytag duxelle) and it's pretty darn good. Not really $12 for a burger on a plate all by itself good though. As I said, all sides are extra, steakhouse style. I have a couple of complaints. One, I ordered a beer which was listed on the menu as a 16 ounce pour, but when it came out it was in the same size glass as my first beer, a 12 ounce pour. A minor complaint, but I'm cheap like that. Give me my other quarter beer! Second, the roll the pork sandwich came on had black grill gunk on it. If you've ever worked in a kitchen, you've seen those grill bricks they scrub the flat-top with? And if you don't wipe off the residue it ends up on the food? Well, that's what was on my $12 all-alone-and-lonely sandwich. I ate around it, but if you're going to be all fancypants, wipe off your flat-top. All in all the menu looked interesting, but the prices (up to $30 for some entrees, no sides included, remember ) and the somewhat forgettable food will keep me from thinking of this place as an option. The service was great though, for being open only a week or so.

I usually don't writw a reciew until I have been to a place at least twice, but I feel like this place knocked it out of the park on first impression. Husband ordered Duck legs, I had pork belly. Both were done to perfection. As a side we ordered Asiago friws. They were good, but felt like they needed something to dip them in. When the chef came to check in we told him that and he went right into the kitchen to whip something up. That's service and care about the consumer experience! The sauce he made was great. We will definitely become regulars because of our experience.

This place has a great ambience and most of the food was very good. Like the bacon flight, it tasted great, almost all of the sides, but they failed at the important one. Stay away from the short ribs and the bone in ribeye. I got the steak and my friend got the short ribs, I will say the short ribs presentation was amazing. They accidentally dropped someone else's food at our table and their was an order of short ribs, they looked mouth watering! But they were tough to chew.... I tried his short ribs and was shocked to find that I had a hard time getting through it. Which helped me decide I should say something about my chewy $36 steak... The waiter didn't seem surprised and told me he would see what he could do. It took him about 5-10 minutes to come back, and he apologized and explained sometimes you just get a bad cut of meat? He said he would be happy to give us the industry discount off the meal? And he asked me what I wanted to do, well if I have to tell him me to comp the steak or offer to get me a "better cut of meat" then I'm talking to a guy who doesn't want to do either. Customer service is not making to customer feel uncomfortable, it's taking care of the problem. They did give us a free dessert and that industry discount. Together they didn't add up to $36.... Most likely won't be back, there are plenty of good places to eat. Also want to add before we got our meals, their was a woman who was choking on what looked to be a piece of steak, and it looked like the ribeye, wonder if she had a hard time chewing that "bad piece of meat"?

The steaks are great and the sides are pretty good but the service is not great! It's too bad because this place could be fantastic but right now, for the price, you don't get what you pay for! We would give it another shot but won't be top of our list!

My husband and I came to Block & Larder for his birthday dinner - they don't do anything special for birthdays (my husband appreciated that they didn't sing!), so don't come here if you're expecting a birthday chocolate or goody at the end of your meal. I had the fried chicken - the guy that brought us our waters said it was some of the best he had ever had, and he was right. I will go back to Block & Larder just for the fried chicken!! We also had the sweet potato gnochi to start, and it was delicious. My husband ordered the short ribs, and he enjoyed them, but thought my fried chicken was better. The negative: Our waitress was adamant that the Louisiana Spicy Honey sauce that comes on the chicken was WAY too spicy. I told her that I love spicy food, but she insisted that it was fiery hot and I would probably not be able to handle it...so I asked her if I could get the sauce on the side and order a second sauce, in case it really was too spicy for me. Well - it was *NOT* too spicy. It was perfectly hot & sweet, and I loved it. The downside=they charged me $2 for the other side of sauce that I ordered ...which frustrated me, because I would have never ordered it if A. I knew a tablespoon of sauce would cost me $2, and if B. I knew the spicy honey sauce was not so ridiculously spicy as the server had sold it to be. Lastly, my cocktail was just O-K -- I had the "Master of the Universe" and I was not very impressed. The menu said it would come in a lowball, but our server said it would come in a martini glass -- I asked her if I could add soda-water to it (I love carbonation in my cocktails), and that was my mistake, I should have just left it the way it was because it came tasting like they just added still-water. We will go back - but we will just get the fried chicken & some beer and call it a date night :)

A most welcome addition to Tennyson. The service is warm and charming, thanks to Stephen. He guided us to the duck and prawns in a light curry, which we ate family-style. The duck had a spicy sauce with real heat - always glad when a chef is unafraid to turn it up. The Scotch selection was fun and unusual. I tried a Tobermory that was peaty and smoky. Definitely don't miss the Brussels sprouts with pork belly side! Lots of small plates and a range of medium-priced and more expensive entrees. We'll be back!

Went here for brunch with my stepdad on a Saturday around 12. It was actually relatively empty. The ambiance is pretty neat- brick walls, pressed tin ceiling and some unique light fixtures made with chain and exposed light bulbs. We sat down at the bar and ordered a couple drinks. He was not as impressed with the beer selection as he could have been, but the bartender made a cocktail for me that included pear gin, orange bitters, simple syrup and some muddled basil. It was really tasty and refreshing for a spring afternoon. My stepdad ordered the fried chicken and I had the chilaquiles. The fried chicken was so yummy! The bartender said they pressure fry it, so it wasn't greasy or dry at all as can sometimes be the case with fried chicken. There was a syrup on it as well which was a nice compliment and not overly sweet. The chilaquiles was delicious as well. It was tortilla chips that had pulled beef, pickled onions, crumbled cheese, and a chile sauce over the top served with refried chickpeas instead of beans and two poached eggs. Honestly, it's one of the best brunch foods I can think of and I didn't even know it existed until today! We had a very enjoyable experience as the food was great and the staff was friendly. I'm not sure if they are usually this quiet or if we just got lucky, but this place is a good find. I will be looking forward to coming back to check out their dinner or lunch menu.

I'm here visiting my daughter in Denver...she was so sweet to take me to Block & Larder for another Birthday dinner! The place has great atmosphere, great lighting and a beautiful bar! Our waiter Rick was awesome...recommended what he thought we would like and let us take our time....we both started with a Bloody Mary which were delist! Then we had the Stack salad (small), which was wonderful and huge! I had the petite filet mignon & my daughter had the Hangar steak....both were great and the different sauces were lovely! Rick presented me with a surprise Birthday dessert which was a solid chocolate tarts....over the top!!! Thank you for the great experience!!!

Oyster stew and burger were sick! Really nice beer selection. Bartender super cool. Only drawback - bald manager guy (part owner?) kept leering at the girls in our party and puts his hands on customers too much. Creepy, man!

Excellent addition to the Berkeley neighborhood and to the ever-growing restaurant mecca known as Tennyson Street. Block & Larder is more upscale than many of the other eateries on Tennyson and they are clearly going for a niche. We showed up before the "grand opening" for the soft-soft opening lunch. Very smart on the restaurant owner and managers part to allow several days to work out the kinks - and honestly, even we did not experience many kinks, although we were only one of the few table occupied. 5 stars for: - Open for lunch (yay!) - Affordable wine/beer list. We enjoyed a prosecco for $20. - The atmosphere including sliding panel glass doors (perfect on one of our many warm, sunny days). There is a large, beautiful bar area as well as a variety of tables and booths. It looks like the space seats around 60. It feels cozy without feeling cramped. - Friendly, competent staff - we talked with the manager at length and she was very grateful for feedback. She clearly knows what she's doing - The fries - the best fries this side of the Dordogne - crispy and delicious and price just right at $3. 4 stars for: - Food overall - my hubby's burger was moist and cooked perfectly with a nice char on the outside and a great bun. However (in my opinion) with the mixture of beef, pork and mushrooms, the additions (lemon aioli etc.) was just too many flavors. I would simplify it a bit. Additionally, my salad would have been five stars (mixed greens, bacon, roasted red pepper, chick-peas and grated cheese) if the ranch dressing had not been watery and bland. Where the burger had too many flavors, the salad needs more, especially with the ranch dressing. We look forward to going back soon. Overall Block & Larder is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Menu reads great and there is so much potential with the space and ambiance but this place is missing it on all marks. They need to cut the menu in half and focus on some of the better dishes here like the fried chicken with hot honey and crispy duck confit. We didn't see a manager In the dining room which I think led to our inattentive service, I saw the waiters standing and chatting quite a bit while our drinks went empty the second half of the meal. The Brussels sprouts were way under cooked and fries were not hot. Portion size and pricing do not align. The plates they are using are way to big and clunky causing awkward serving/clearing moments. Great fried chicken for $14 but $28 for a huge chewy dry short rib. I wanted to love this place since it's around the corner but I won't be going back unless I see the menu cut down.

We tried this place with some friends about a month ago right after it opened and loved it. I started with the Oyster Chowder, which was excellent (and I'm from New England) and then had the Rabbit with Louisiana Hot Honey sauce and it was fantastic. My wife had the fried chicken and also was a big fan. After dinner my wife and I shared the doughnut, which was a great finish to the night. This place also has a full bar and solid drink menu though I just went with my stand-by Odell IPA. Block and Larder is relatively upscale and is a great place to hang out with friends or go on a date, especially for those of us in our 30s or 40s. I look forward to going back though next time I hope to make it for lunch to try some of the sandwiches. It's great to see a place like this open outside of downtown. It's not cheap but it's worth the price!

Well, the first two times I had dinner at Block and Larder I was extremely disappointed. It was early on, so I thought I'd give it a little more time. I decided to try brunch. I was equally as disappointed as the first two times. The chef really needs to change his recipes or something. We had the Chiliquiles. It was like eating just a bowl of tortilla chips. The meat on it although sparse wasn't bad. There was a teeny bit of cheese but not much. We also had the pulled pork hash. I don't know what they do to the pork but it's the third time I've had something there with the pork and it is so brittle and dried out. I don't know if it's old or seriously overcooked. It's awful. It will be really hard to try this place a 4th time. I live in the neighborhood and had high hopes.

I am rooting for this place and think they can be amazing with a few improvements: - All dishes were incredibly salty (lamb, duck, brussels, mushrooms) - this was the consensus of everyone at the table.. - The bread wasn't impressive (like something you would buy at a local supermarket). - And they placed a pickled onion garnish on every plate (each plate should have a garnish that accompanies the dish). -The space felt a little too spread out in the back portion of the restaurant The good things: - Great service - Good cocktails - Large portions - Love their menu (Oysters, variety of meats and sides, yum!) Cheers!

I took some friends here hoping for good things. Alas the red curry soup was not only bad, but disgusting. Nothing here was good enough for a return visit. Couldn't even find a dessert that appealed and a dirty martini in a champagne glass? Please. Too many choices around here to go back. Cool atmosphere.

Am trying to find a reason for the 4th star as I really wanted to love this place. The quality of the food was decent but the combination of service deficiencies and expediter problems in the kitchen clouded the experience. The wine selection is solid and the cocktails are amazing. It's always a plus when your cocktail arrives with a proper single slow melting cube. I had the Ribeye in a red wine demi. One of the better steaks I've had in a while - melt in your mouth good and really didn't require a sauce. The pickled onions on the side were a nice surprise and great flavor combination. My wife had the bistro filet - it also tasted great but came out about 3 or 4 mn in front of mine and was only luke warm when she was finally able to eat it. We ordered the roasted mushrooms and creamed Kale - both good but not amazing. Kale came out with the filet (early) and mushrooms didn't arrive until about 5 mn after the delayed arrival my ribeye arrived. Our clean plates sat in front of us for quite a while before being cleared away and when we asked for the dessert menu we received the check. Sigh.

I live in the Berkeley neighborhood so have been so excited to try this restaurant. Went there last night with some friends and hate to say, but it was very disappointing. Our waiter was obviously pretty swapped and always seemed in a rush to leave our table. He didn't boast about the menu or ask if we had any questions. He also seemed annoyed when I asked him for a drink as he was passing by our table. I got the duck legs, which were actually pretty good. Ordered the brussels sprouts as a side (as the waiter said the order was large enough to share). It came with about 14 brussels sprout halves (which means over $1 per brussels sprout) and they were pretty disappointing - undercooked and not very flavorful. My boyfriend got the $40 Ribeye, which was also overcooked as mentioned in another review. He ordered medium rare and it was definitely closer to medium - flesh was light pink instead of closer to a rare red/pink color. I was also very thin and under seasoned. One of our friends ordered the filet and said it was also pretty bland. She seemed pretty un-inthused about the meal. The only thing that everyone agreed was good was the sweet potato gnocchi. Overall, the food was okay....but at about $35 for one person to eat, i would expect the food to be pretty damn good. If you're going to charge $40 for a rib eye it should be fucking amazing - especially if your whole thing is serving good quality cuts of meat. We all left feeling like we could have cooked a better meal at home - steaks included! Judging from the other reviews i guess it's possible that we ordered the wrong thing....so we will probably go back in a few months to give it another try. But I definitely won't recommend it to friends in the mean time.

I've been to Block and Larder twice now, I was hoping the first night was just an off night. I really do want to be impressed but I find it mediocre at best. I live in the neighborhood and enjoy walking to Tennyson for drinks and dinner, but I probably won't be back a third time .

One of the best burgers in Denver, but the desserts are nothing to write home about. Even on the second go around (after receiving a certificate for a free dessert, they still could not serve a dessert that was worth a damn). Other than that, great little local joint.

I have been to many nice steakhouses and boutique restaurants so I'll start out saying my expectations were high and I was extremely excited to try a new place. Drinks were good and the appetizers were great. I then ordered a $40 ribeye for the main course. It came and looked very thin but I didn't worry about appearance. I ordered it medium rare and it came out medium well or well. The taste was very good but when I commented on the temperature of the steak the manager said that I was blatantly wrong and that the steak was cooked correctly. I didn't comment back but isn't it the first rule in the service industry that the customer is right? I have never been upset about a meal but after that my $160 bill was definitely unsettling especially because they didn't do anything about the steak and told me that I was wrong instead of trying to correct the situation.

Went there on opening night so there were some workflows that were still being worked out. We were seated in a timely manner considering the number of folks trying out the new place. I was with a friend and we ordered food and drinks. Drinks came out and after about 10 minutes our server stopped by the table and informed me that my order, the bone in pork chop, was going to take a little longer than normal as they worked things out. I was in no hurry and the atmosphere was nice so it wasn't a big deal that on their first night there were some delays. The way I saw it, I might need a second glass of wine. Our server brought out some complimentary bread which was a welcome but unexpected suprise. When the food came it was all awesome. Between the two of us we had the boasted chicken (best fried chicken I have had in denver) the succotash (suffering succootash they got that right too) the bone in pork chop (gigantic and perfectly cooked -seriously this thing was like 4 inches thick) and the mushrooms (very good flavor). It isn't often that you go to a restaurant and all the food you get is excellent, especially on the opening night. Block and Larder has what it takes. I can't wait to see how it grows. I'll be going back!

The service was very good for opening night, they even brought out milk to have with the impressive banana cake, which was a great touch. The sweet potato sausage was great, the Broasted chicken was incredible. The whole atmosphere really came together nicely and it's great to see a restaurant that component before they're even open. Love FreshCraft, so it makes sense that the chef would kill it in a new space. Plus, the prices are affordable for what you're getting, portion size was indulgent, I left full for a reasonable amount of money. I can definitely see myself eating here often.

The food here is great. The bartender that was working on first Friday was not. My husband and I sat at the bar for 30 minutes with empty drinks. When we looked around, we realized 9 out of the 12 guests sitting at the bar had empty drinks and no one could get the bartenders attention. She kept walking across the bar staring away from guests, avoiding eye contact and acknowledgement. One girl walked in while we were all waiting and waited for a drink for 20 minutes. Every guest at the bar was talking about it. We ended up leaving and going to the Berkeley tap house because that bartender appeared interested in serving drinks to guests. I have no idea how such an amazing place could have placed a bartender like that behind the bar on the day like first Friday where there is a ton of foot traffic that will be talking about their experience.

This place was a great experience. We came in and sat at the bar, and the bartender truly made the experience even better. Ordered a bottle off of their special list, and had some of the "nosh" options. The only reason for the minus star was that the duck confit was not that great; super dry and just weird. But the dessert, creme brûlée was AMAZING. Definitely coming back for a full dinner!

Great addition to the neighborhood and so needed! Love having an amazing comfortable neighborhood steakhouse nearby! We shared the 12 oz. bacon wrapped filet special. Cooked absolutely perfectly, melt in your mouth delic! For sides, we shared the brussel sprouts, panzanella, and the sweet potato gnocchi. Brussel sprouts are a very very small portion but tasty. The deep dish panzanella was, meh. The sweet potato gnocchi...omg. So freaking good! LOVED these, especially with the sage! Overall, amazing food. Only reasons it's a 4 and not 5 star are: small sides, A/C comes on and turns it into the arctic (bring a jacket), and they could be more generous with the sauce on the main courses. I'll be back!

This place is ok. I like the decor. The food is good quality. Despite that, I have some things why this is not my favorite place. Service was ok. The food took longer than seemed reasonable to arrive after placing our order. The prices were definitely on the high side (and it was al la carte À la carte, read: even much more expensive if you want a complete main course). All with all I would eat here again but it's not on top of my list.

Food was pretty good. Staff knowledge about food/drinks/restaurant was slacking a bit. Server, who's name I don't wanna say because he's new, personality wasn't really there. Definitely grab a batch of the coffee salted fries (best part of the meal) the tomato bisque was pretty bomb too, but honestly not that memorable. I think this place has potential to be more. Maybe after a couple more months all the kinks will be worked out.

After my first very nice visit to this restaurant, I went back with the my boyfriend. I was less than impressed the second time. My Gin Gimlet (that I had the first time I was there) just tasted off the second time I had it there. We had mostly food from the Nosh menu the second time and we were pretty disappointed. The bacon flight is a joke, it was three pieces of bacon cut in half and none were distinguishable from the others. The homemade sausage is just ok. Fontina cheese is not very interesting, but it was served in slices that looked and tasted like Kraft singles, seriously. The duck confit was good though. The only time we will be back is to have a drink at the bar while we consider eating somewhere else.

Thought this was going to be great when we walked in - great vibe.( thats how they get one star) Sat at the bar and asked if they had ginger beer for a Dark and Stormy. He had to check the syrup?????? We wait. He then says yes, the ginger ale is fine. Well, do you have ginger BEER? Yes, we have that in the back if you want it. Well, yes, a Dark and Stormy is dark rum and ginger beer. To which the bartender replies " I am aware, this is my job". REALLY??? This is how you talk to customers? Then he proceeds to get a copper mug and make some form of a Moscow Mule, (so funny that this is his job,) What an arrogant ass! Why did we stay and drink that $10 drink, I don't know. But we certainly didn't order food - went across the street to the friendly and professional BBQ place!!!

This is a fun restaurant with good food and easy to get to. We didn't have a wait, which was nice for a Friday last minute dinner date. The atmosphere was great and relaxing and the service was excellent! We started with the truffled goat cheese which had great flavor and a good starter and not too big. I had the pork and sweet potato sausage which was some of the best sausage i have had but you really couldn't taste the sweet potato. My husband had the crispy confit duck legs and thought it was great and had great flavor. We did a side of brussel sprouts which i was a little disappointed in. There was nothing special about them, I could have done this at home. This was a little more pricey than we had planned on but overall it was reasonable for the quality of food and service you are getting.

First things first: this is going to be a rave review. It's also going to be pretty detailed, because from what I've seen, (most) people who give 5-star reviews don't write as much as people who give 1-star reviews. And I feel like a good review deserves just as much time and effort. Now on to the good stuff. This place is awesome. It is my new favorite restaurant in Denver, which is why I've been here at least once a week since it opened two months ago. It's not even in my neighborhood. In fact, it's 20-30 minutes out of my way (and I have to drive up Sheridan to get there, so you know I'm basically risking my life every time I need a bacon fix). Since I've been there so often, I've had a chance to do two things that most one-off reviewers haven't: (1) try the same dishes on different days, and (2) try a lot of different things. I've also had the chance to talk with the waitstaff and bartenders about the food and drink, and - without exception - they've been super helpful and happy to explain things and answer questions. My favorite thing about Block & Larder is that they make almost everything in-house. And they use real - often local - ingredients. This is not just a steakhouse. There's a lot more to it than that. I've tried a bunch of things on the menu (drinks and food), and I've been impressed with all of them. Here are some of my all-stars: Truffle Fries. Why? BECAUSE THEY USE REAL TRUFFLES. Twice. First, they toss the fries in (house-made) truffle-infused oil. Then, they salt the fries with (house-made) truffle salt. Real truffles are subtle, and delicious, and they add just the right touch of decadence to these fries, which are crispy outside, hot, and perfectly seasoned. And here's where I have a bone to pick with people who claim to be "truffle snobs." Guys. GUYS. Do you know that most restaurants use truffle oil to flavor "truffle [insert random food object here]"? Guess what: truffle oil is not even made from truffles. In fact, it's made from something called 2,4-Dithiapentane mixed with olive oil (I had to look that up, but rest assured, it's accurate). Basically, using truffle oil is the culinary equivalent of dousing a custard with imitation vanilla. And any real "truffle snob" would know that. Bottom line: these fries are fabulous and they're the real deal. House Bacon. Delicious. Crispy. Salty. Bacon-y goodness. I love it when restaurants offer quality bacon just as a side dish. Because it's freakin bacon. Bacon goes with everything. Bacon is the new black. Mushroom Medley. I just love this because it's made with several types of wild-picked mushrooms (I asked: they're from Hunt & Gather, a local company that provides seasonal produce; i.e., whatever they have is in season and fresh). Also, I'd never had black trumpet mushrooms before and they were delicious. This dish came in a light sauce that allowed the flavors and textures of the different mushrooms to come through. Creamed Bourbon Kale. This is one of my go-tos, because it's got so much flavor that you forget you're eating kale (ha). Kale usually isn't that exciting to me, unless I'm mixing it in a smoothie with a ton of fruit (thereby not tasting it). This dish is the exception. The kale is tender without being mushy, and the bourbon and cream were a great combination. Pork Chop. This is my favorite entrée. I've had it a few times, and it is stupid good. It was a solid piece of meat (like 2 inches thick at least), big enough that I have to take about half of it home with me. Perfectly cooked, great flavor. I think my exact words when trying it for the first time were something along the lines of "this tastes like the happiest pig ever." All the sauces. Block & Larder is unique in that they offer a bunch of different sauces to go with all the meats. They're all house-made. So if you don't want the recommended sauce, you can swap it out for a different one. My friend ordered a filet that came with red wine demi but switched it out for the black garlic cream. She loved it. Pumpkin Crème Brulee. I'm not much of a dessert person, but I do love me some pumpkin, and this was awesome. And it even comes with a churro, which was like an awesome little donut surprise. I kind of want this right now, actually. The service has always been excellent for me, from day one. The bartenders and waiters know their stuff, and if anyone in my group had a question they couldn't answer, they would immediately go ask and come back with an answer. (We maybe asked a lot of questions.) Whenever I have friends visiting from out of town, I always take them here - and then they're even more jealous that I get to live here.

Ah such a fun new place in the Berkley neighborhood. Do you want a fun & exciting cocktail? Want to try something to boost your taste buds? Then Block & Larder is the place to go. Beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, wonderful choices on the menu that are very creative. I LOVE the oyster chowder! I'm pescetarian so always choose vegetarian or fish options (prawns & striped bass - yummy!). But if you're a meat eater (as is my hubby), this place is a dream. Try some of the new sauces and you will be pleasantly surprised. And, I can't stop talking about how fun & delicious the cocktails are - Skeletor is my go to!

I love this neighborhood, and was the thrilled to see the guys from Freshcraft bringing in a new concept for everyone on the block to enjoy. I went there for a lunch date, and started with the Gnocci and a salad, which were both outstanding. We followed that up with a ridiculously awesome loaded potato dip and literally the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. The cocktail program has some great riffs on classics, all named for He-Man characters (try the Sword of Protection), and the beer list is very nice. Wine was the one thing we didn't delve into, but the list looked very nice. Beautiful space - classy yet comfortable. The service from the bartenders was excellent. I will be a longstanding regular at this great new venue.

Went for lunch with a couple of girlfriends and my toddler. Overall OK. Service was great, food was OK. I think they might just be trying to do too much and just do everything OK rather than a couple these great. I like the decor and the waitstaff, hopefully when it's been open longer than figure out what they are good at and focus on that. Great location, I'll likely try back in a year, but a urge to return is not high at this time. Might be a better dinner place?!

B & L is right next to our house on Tennyson, so we wanted to try it out. PROS: Ambiance, decor, wait staff... all were great. We got it not too long before last call on a Sunday night, and they did a great job of communicating that information to us without making us feel rushed. Our waitress was a doll, super kind and very communicative.. and is quite honestly the only reason that we'll consider giving this place a second shot. CONS: Unfortunately, there were more cons that pros. Truffle goat cheese.. was just goat cheese. No pronounced truffle flavor, at all (I'm a truffle geek). Then, we ordered a 9oz beef filet for $35. We ordered it medium rare (and made emphasis to make it more rare than medium), but when it arrived, it was nearly completely gray throughout. It was a good piece of meat, but if you're in the business of a $35 beef filet, make sure it's cooked well (no pun). Next, we ordered 'Roasted Mushrooms' as a side. They were mainly button mushrooms, with a cream sauce and what appeared to be wilted kale. There was no mention of the cream sauce they were smothered in-- they were more like creamed mushrooms rather than roasted mushrooms. We also ordered coffee salted steak fries.. these were more like the size of potato wedges, and not pronounced coffee flavor. But, this could also be my lack of understanding around 'coffee salted'. They were decent, just much larger and not quite as exotic as I imagined. All in all, we were very, very disappointed with this restaurant and our $100 bill... for an incredibly sub-par meal. We will likely try it again.. but, not in any rush to do so. Sad day.

I live just off Tennyson and had been anxiously awaiting the opening of Block & Larder for months to add to all the other great things happening on Tennyson St. I've been to Block & Larder twice now. The first time it was a sit down dinner for four and the ambiance of the restaurant was warm and comfortable. The drink menu had some unique cocktails which was a welcome surprise and break from the average drinking establishments along Tennyson St. After the drinks were delivered the experiences took a turn for the worse and never recovered. We started with some appetizers that included House Smoked Mozzarella, House Sausage, and some Crispy Duck Confit. The presentation for all three Nosh's were plain and uninviting at best as they were delivered on small plates with virtually no presentation (just pieces of food on a plain white plate). The Mozzarella and Sausage tasted pretty bland and I would not recommend them. The Duck Confit was dry due to being over-cooked. The four us then ordered some dinner from the entrée menu and we each had something different. I had a bone in ribeye that I asked to be cooked medium-rare and it was delivered "medium". The cost of the Bone-In-Ribeye is $40 but looked and tasted more like a $24 ribeye I could get at Texas Roadhouse. My friend got a $34 filet and asked for it to be cooked medium-rare and it was delivered cooked medium-well. The cut of the meat looked good but it was way over-cooked and he chose not to say anything saying it might be due to the restaurant being new and just working out the kinks. The other two people in our party ordered the Rabbit and Chicken respectively and both of their dinners the meat was dry, over-cooked and lacked any juices and flavor whatsoever. Are you starting to see the theme here? Everything was "over-cooked" and generally "dry" and lacking flavor. We did have some Gnocchi and Brussels sprouts with dinner and they were generally good but not great. We decided to give Block and Larder a second try and this time we sat at the bar and had cocktails and some appetizers. I ordered a specialty drink on the menu that said it would be served on the rocks and I got my drink "neat" in a martini glass. I told the bartender that it was the wrong drink and he said to me "it's the correct drink and the correct way to serve it and that the menu is wrong". I asked him to put it in a glass with ice and he obliged. As my other friends were trying to order they were asking the bartender questions about different types of whiskey bottles behind the bar and the bartender said he didn't know anything about those brands but could go ask someone who might. I would think that a bartender working a nice and pricier bar should be aware of the alcohol he could possible serve and not have to run and get help from someone else to answer questions. We also ordered numerous appetizers including the bacon flight, pork belly, fontina and truffle-house fries. Everything we had lacked any type of presentation and the taste was mostly bland, with the exception of the truffled-fries which were oversalted. Overall I think the prices are too high, the quality too low and the service is in needs of improvement. I think the menu generally looks good but the execution is lacking and is in need of a quality chef to bring the quality and taste of food in line with the prices you will be paying to eat here. I will give this place two thumbs down and hope that they can figure things out in the near future because Berkeley could rally benefit from a quality steak/protein type restaurant.

Went there with a friend a week or so back - and i'm sad to say i was a bit underwhelmed. Ordered the burger and a side of veggies, and I wasn't even asked how i wanted my meat cooked (which seems odd). Also first time in years that the burger came with mayo (aioli - fancy mayo, but mayo) without warning. My friend ordered the sausage and said it was good (not great, but solid). Server was attentive but almost seemed annoyed to be there. Given how many good options are on Tennyson, I may stop here for a drink but i''m thinking there are better food options for the price.

I remember a few songs from kindergarten, my first girlfriends eye color, and when I lost my virginity. In my adult years I I enjoy good sleep, a reliable car, and good restaurants. This is one of those restaurants that takes pride from top to bottom and does things the way that THEY would want them to be done. Be a patron.

We've eaten at Block and Larder twice, and have been impressed both times. The beer selection is small but impressive. I had the duck on the first visit and the chicken on the second visit. I would order both again. The sweet potato gnocchi was fantastic!

The best fried chicken I have ever eaten. Thin crispy skin, tender on the inside and not dry at all. I was in heaven. Hubby got the pork and he said it was delicious as well. We got the fondue side dish - bacon, potatoes, and cheese. AMAZING. Overall, a very hearty and somewhat heavy meal, but totally worth it. My new neighborhood favorite.

I will be back to see how they have settled in but here is a review from just after their opening: Sides were great, my bass was cooked perfectly, the sausage was dry, cocktails were heavy on the vermouth, great soups, bacon flight was a joke, donut was heavy and dry but the ice cream was great.

Can I give Zero Stars? My wife and I ate here two nights in a row. Our first night was very nice. Don't get me wrong the food is good. The second night we came with some friends and showed up with out a reservation. No problem, we waited at the bar and had some cocktails. We are seated within an hour or so, ordered some apps and drinks etc. 20 minutes or so after that we got our entree's ordered. 30 minutes later - ish the food arrived. My entree was cold, as in cold to the bone cold. I sent it back. By the time a fresh plate was brought out to me (another 20 minutes) everyone else in my party was done eating. I told our server I didn't want my plate. She apologised and left. What is really disturbing is what happened next. By this point we are two hours in or so. About 10 minutes later the "manager" comes to our table. ( I assume he was the manager he never introduced himself as such ) He said, with a very aggressive attitude and no introductiion, " So you don't want the duck confit? I said, "well I wanted the duck confit about a half an hour ago." In all fairness this was not my best moment. I should have been more kind. That said his next words were.... "Get the fuck out of my restaurant." He said this is to our entire party. " I have your ticket now get the fuck out? We are very confused by now. He said " you are a very rude person, get out I have already called the police." We are stunned. He told me that I F bombed the server. I did not. He said she was in the back crying. She was serving another table near by. I probable F bombed him when he bum- rushed me, I can't say I didn't. Still, we were shocked to say the least. The rest of my party were as stunned as I. They assured me I did not abuse the server. Further more when they went back in to make sure she ( the server ) got tipped he was abusive to them as well. I travel extensively for work and dine out as a matter of course. I have never been treated this way and honestly don't know what to make of it. Highlands / Berkley / Sloans Lake is a booming place and most good business will prosper. That said the management of this place is abusive and contemptuous to say the least. I truly hope that this oppressive attack won't go un noticed. Please don't support this kind of abusive behavior by going to their place of business. I don't know what else to say.

I'm very impressed with the neighborhood addition and one of the few good places close to get some great pork and steaks. I love Freshcraft, their sister restaurant, and their new addition didn't disappoint. I had the bone in pork chop, a few nosh plates, and some great beers and can't wait to try some of the other items on the menu.

Great decor. The food was ok. Not sure it is worth the wait or the money. The service was subpar. Slow, non attentive and non personable. Did not match the vibrant fun neighborhood. I would much rather go to Brazen and have a great, cheaper meal with better service.
