Coffee: Really nice with a varied menu to choose from, reasonably priced, and pulled and poured by people who actually know what they are doing. Clientele: Denver is its own worst enemy, with people almost everywhere who don't tuck in their shirts, white people who don't really interact with any other cultural groups, and hip hip hip kids with no drive. Staff: Great! Way better than expected with a hip brand new coffee shop. Yay! The digs themselves are really nice, nicely sized, and comfy. It is exciting that the west and north side get a chance to have good coffee in their hood. I just hope that the shop and shop-goers reach out and into the community so that it becomes integration positively rather than pure gentrified awkwardness.

I don't drink coffee so I can't speak to that, but I love this coffee shop. They have a tasty and spicy chai (not Bhakti chai) which I'd recommend. I love the community seating and overall aesthetic. It's hip and cool but friendly. I was in with 2 friends who have kids and they were very accommodating of our crazy stroller parking and public breastfeeding. Also, in the back of the shop is a cool micro-grocery store called the Clever Turnip. Check it out!

Stellar coffee in a beautiful setting served by friendly people. Black eye has a few unique things you don't find at all coffee shops. They have a garage door that they open when the weather is nice which is glorious. There is a community table to sit at which is super fun. They offer a variety of pour overs daily and they never disappoint. And last but not least the pastries here are amazingly delicious. Not to toot my own horn but I am a pastry connoisseur. I know a thing or two about pastries because I am addicted and eat one everywhere I go. I don't even like scones. Most scones are dry, disappointing and a waste of carbs. I tried their scones one day and I have been in love ever since. Now that I have done all of this bragging about the pastries it is important to mention the coffee is 10 times better.

Very good craft coffee. Service was average but what is expected in a hipster joint haha!

The noise level is pretty great, feels like a place to hangout not a library. Pour-over coffee. Greg is the owner, young guy, great local business. There's a little market in the back too.

Really, as Yelp says, 5 stars means as good as it gets and that's steals the words out of my mouth. Black Eye Coffee has been a little while coming, satiating us fiends for the bean with a coffee cart for a short period before they opened. But the day is upon us where the roll up garage entrance is flung open and we can finally see their beautiful space, sit at their handmade tables and of course taste their coffee, which is nothing less than brilliant. On their first day the roasts were all by Boxcar in Boulder and it seems that these will be their standard. As well, all of the drinks are being made on a gorgeous Synesso espresso machine - coffee nerds rejoice. If you're a fan of Crema, Happy, Aviano, Metropolis or just incredibly done coffee drinks, Black Eye should become a required stop on your caffeine tour of Denver. It may just be the best of them all.

Keep in mind I am giving this a 3 based on overall experience, not just on coffee which would really increase the rating. I've only been here twice now, as it is much closer to me than my usual coffee shop. So I'll start with what would give this shop a 4 or 5 on my scale. The pour over I had on both occasions was absolutely fantastic. One of the better cups of coffee I've ever had both occasions, so definitely a 5 on pour-over. Being that I usually just like a black cup of coffee and don't go for espresso drinks, that definitely sticks out as important to me because I really appreciate just a great cup of black coffee. Although if you don't get a pour over I think you get drip, which I'm usually not too fond of. My gf and I also had a cappuccino on our last visit to try out their espresso'ish line, and I'd give a 4 on espresso. Maybe it was just a fluke, but I'd say it was in between the smoothest wow-factor espresso I've had, and your standard espresso, with just a slight burnt taste to it. Again, worth a 4, just not the best. That puts the 3 beverages I've had there at about a 4.5, pretty solid start. Now for the unfortunate part that turned me off to the place. On both occasions we've sat inside, and its been beautiful out, so the garage door has been open, something I find extremely cool about the shop. However, with people smoking right outside the open garage door the entire time, you also just smell cigarettes the entire time inside. Okay, not the entire time, but today it was definitely over 3/4 of the hour or so I spent, smelling cigarettes (and I could tell the guy sitting across from me at the community table also wasn't so keen on this every time a new person lit up and the smell wafted in). And I must say, I come to a coffee shop to enjoy some of the subtle nuances of the shop, the aroma, atmosphere, and a place to get some work done away from home to break up the day as a freelancer. Sitting there in the smoke just didn't do it for me though. It put a ding in the whole aroma part, and just didn't bring on that creative state I like to find outside the home while working. This might sound weird too, but there were also a surprising amount of yappy dogs hanging out there. Sorry to all you yappy dog lovers, the whole bring your yappy dog around in a purse type thing like it's a commodity, for it to sit and yap like crazy at other yappy dogs just isn't attractive to me, and being that about half my visit today was listening to a yappy dog war outside (again, 10ft away at the open garage door), it did lower the culture vibe here for me as well. Others obviously don't care about the things I down-rated for, which is a-ok! To each their own, like I said the coffee was really top-notch, it's just some of those other things that turn me off to it. I will probably try again at some point, and maybe it will change my perspective. Still very cool to see some people pushing the great emerging roasters, local companies, etc. in the neighborhood, which I certainly appreciate!

This place is my jam- exactly what I hope for when I try out new coffee shops (which is often). I appreciate quaint establishments and this definitely hit the nail on the head. You just feel good when you're there! The barista was so nice to explain to me all the elements and techniques of their 'pour over coffee.' What's that you say? I don't want to tell you because you should go there and experience it for yourself. It was such a delight and reasonably priced. I can't wait to go back!

Had a cappuccino here today (first time I've gone) that absolutely knocked my socks off. I sometimes forget how deliciously complex a simple espresso beverage can be when made with genuine expertise. Will definitely be treating myself to more of these.

Was so excited to try out this new coffee shop, as they were give a rave review in the local paper! Unfortunately, I have to go by first impressions, and theirs was sub par! The cashier that took my order was so unfriendly, and when I got my drink (an almond milk cappuccino), it was nothing like a cappuccino! I then asked for a bit more foamy milk to fix it, and the cashier looked at me like I had 3 heads! The drink itself tasted awful! Not sure if it was the coffee itself or the overall preparation of the drink! Do not go out of your way!!!

Global Good, Bardo, and this place are my favorites. These guys make a really good Americano. Also, their atmosphere is a fun/ interesting farmhouse chic meets industrial. Pretty cool. Worth a visit for sure.

I love this place. I really do. I had read some Yelp reviews of coffee in the area, and this place had great reviews, and it wasn't too far from home. But, I put it off for a bit. Then I was outside REI chatting with a nice gentleman who said his son had opened up a shop in the highlands, and it was Black Eye Coffee. Well after talking for almost an hour about many things, I decided to check it out. And I loved it. I just moved here from the Boston area, and it reminded me so much of the places I love out on the east coast. So now i try to get my fix every single day here. I love the atmosphere and the people who not only work there, but that go there as well. So, I love their coffee, and basically everything else about this place.

I'm not sure why it's called the Black Eye. Perhaps because people were fighting over their fucking amazing lattes. Maybe that.

  • Dan A.

I really wanted to like this neighborhood shop, but I don't think I will go back. The drip coffee was not for me, sour and lacking much complexity. The instant oatmeal sounded great but was much too watery and just not worth the price. The ambience had potential but lacked originality or character. Overall, this shop was just underwhelming.

    (3)
  • Amanda Y.

Tried this place for the first time today and the first thing I must say is the coffee and pastries were really good. The atmosphere was great - relaxed, industrial and open. You can see it really becoming a hub for the neighborhood (if it isn't already). Service was really friendly. The only thing that detracted was that, in my opinion, it was overpriced. I will almost definitely get coffee there again but the price puts in in the 'sometimes' category rather than the 'every day' one.

  • Rebecca K.

We walked in to find a less than friendly man behind the counter. When we asked what he recommended for breakfast he informed us that this was a "coffee shop" not a breakfast place. We ordered coffee and some pastries, the pastries were easily 3 days old and the coffee was dreadful. The building was neat, the little grocer at the back was quaint and it should of been a neat place to visit. But the staff wasn't remotely pleasant. We live within walking distance, so we were determined to love this place but nope.

  • Alissa F.

This place has all the fix'ns of a pretentious coffee shop and none of the condescending attitude. Not only does Black Eye look like the coolest hang out spot, it also has awesome food, drinks and service. The prices are good, too. I had a large dirty chai, a generous portion of quinoa salad and a bottle of cold pressed green juice (made in-house) all for under $19. I've paid a lot more for a lot less.

  • Denver O.

Once upon a time, the Northside was a bit isolated from the rest of Denver. The shops and crowds of LoDo hadn't yet spilled over the valley highway and other than a few art galleries and the Bug Theatre, the whole scene was non-existent. It was a local's only, working-class neighborhood. One where you went to go home, not to go out. Those times have long since passed and while we loathe the pseudo-yuppies and giant angular town houses that have moved in, we love how many businesses have popped up. But to be honest, were not here to pat everyone on the back for doing an adequate job. We're here draw lines in the sand, tell you what in Denver is the most worthwhile and to say Black Eye Coffee is probably our favorite business in the Highlands. Take that Linger. While Denver has it's fair share of coffee shops, only a handful are worth anything at all. Black Eye is one of those and that's what makes it so hard to pinpoint our favorite aspect. We love the coffee they choose, the look and feel of the shop, the people who work there and maybe most important to us is how they seemingly fit into the very real void between the luxury condos of now and the whole culture of what the Northside used to be. Sure, the shop is hip and stylish with a target audience of high-end coffee devotees but it has enough accessibility so as not to come off as pretentious. If all you want is a cup of coffee, you can get just a cup of coffee. Its character lends itself to the idea that there will be more than just designer wearing young professionals admiring the latte art and talking about their trusts. It seems it could be a place that will help build the community that it is a part of rather than snubbing it, which is a unique and refreshing attitude for a business in the Highlands.

I really love this coffee shop. The vibe is so great, it's an escape from Denver. I bring my two year old and he runs around. I expect the staff to get all weird, but they are really cool about it. The coffee is top-notch and resembles nothing of Starbucks, thankfully.

  • Drea K.

Black Eye offers an hip, yet down-to-earth cafe experience. Cleverly designed and full of light, Black Eye is tucked into a part of LoHi that hasn't yet donned a pretentious overcoat. Jesus, that's a pretentious statement, isn't it? Maybe it's because I'm sitting at Black Eye now, getting coffee-high from one of their rich, aromatic pour overs, enjoying friendly service on a Sunday afternoon, with classic soul music thumping in the background. Their food, coffee and tea selections are picky, but impeccable. They've designed the setting so that you have space to feel good. Nice work, Black Eye founders. Patrons, keep this place humming, it's well worth it.

Ridiculously great coffee. My favorite, the Cortado, done perfectly, beans from Boxcar. House-made granola, yummy pastries, upscale chocolates (Dick Taylor, Mast Brothers), achingly hip atmosphere and clientele, but stops short of urban pretense. Great music, always. Sunny windows, incredibly comfortable coffee spot.

Black Eye is definitely part of the new/third wave or coffee professionals who pay attention to every details that brings optimal flavors out of the bean. Even if you don't like coffee, go in to see how passionate they are about doing things precisely and passionately! So good!!

  • Gabriel M.

Definitely have to try the pour overs if you come here, the baristas here know how to make a good cup. The store is pretty nice as well and a good place to sit down for a good cup while you work on some paperwork. I will be coming here again when I am in the neighborhood again.

Denver CO - What a lovely little place! We came here with some friends and everything was perfect. The decor coupled with the music has a charming old-time appeal, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the coffee is top notch. We also had the pleasure of trying the cinnamon roll... Fresh, moist, delicious! Would definitely return.

This is my favorite coffee shop in the area. They have great coffee and the service is always friendly. They have a great food selection as well, everything from breakfast sandwiches and unique pastries to salads and hot sandwiches for lunch. They open the garage door during nice weather and they have a couple seats outside, but usually plenty of seating inside.

Since I run a coffee shop in boulder I am always on the hunt for other little gems. I am not saying this because they are "competition" but this coffee shop sucks. Don't get me wrong, I envy their aesthetics-- they've got the right environment, designs, appeal, etc. and would love to channel that in my shop. Very modern and "hip". However, the male barista I talked to was extremely rude. I was looking to buy some beans and he had little to no knowledge about the product. Either that or he just didn't wanna share. At my shop, we are always sure to inform consumers about the product. Also, prices were stupidly high for a less than satisfactory espresso. Tasted dirty, burned and not properly extracted. Usually I love recommending other roasters but this is one I would steer clear of.

Great little coffee shop in a quaint neighborhood. Good amount of study space and a nice atmosphere. It's pretty busy but it's still a good atmosphere to get work done. I had a chai and mac and cheese and was thoroughly impressed with all of it, my friend had the poblano grilled cheese and was equally impressed. A true winner of coffee shops and by far one of the best in town.

  • Solomon W.

This coffee shop fits the stereotype of most coffee shops fitting into the heart of gentrification: large door, plenty of windows, and plenty of natural lighting. Nothing too fancy going on here. They certainly take pride in what they do, whether it be grub, coffee, and even purveying local products. I found the location to be nice, though I can imagine that this area will be saturated in no time. It's already headed that direction. If you are in the area, I would point you this direction, but apart from its edginess, set your expectations about eye-level.

  • Casey L.

This place is great! I'm not a coffee purist, but their drip and americano's are both great. Their pastries are always super good and fresh. They have an assortment of really cool print "zines" or whatever at the back that are fun to take a look at. The ambiance is really nice and comfortable. There is a lot of natural light, and in the right weather they open up the front via a garage style door/window.

  • Rachel S.

And here I thought Black Eye was just a place to get Amaaazing coffee in a great location. Boy was I wrong... They have a larger food menu now, and it includes the best mac & cheese you have {e v e r} had. 2 words: Smoked. Mozzarella. ...Yep. I cannot wait to go back and try the other options. Seriously, I'll probably go back tomorrow. Oh, and the coffee still rocks - while mac & cheese + a latte may seem like an odd combo... it wasn't. It's devine. In conclusion: amazing coffee, great location, delicious eats.

I really enjoy this place on a gorgeous afternoon when they open up the "garage door" and let the fresh air roll in. The iced jasmine tea I ordered was absolutely delicious and not bitter as some green teas tend to be. They even served it in a mason jar! The employees are extremely friendly and helpful. ***Insider tip*** I ordered the breakfast tacos because someone next to me got them and they looked too good to pass up. Since I was there mid-afternoon, they gave them to me for free since "they were made earlier in the day" and needed to get rid of them. Hey, it's worth a shot! They had sweet potato, chorizo, eggs, and salsa on the side...absolutely delish! They also offer veggie bfast tacos. If you need a quaint coffee shop to hang out or get some work done in the highlands, this is a perfect place for it.

Always enjoy the coffee and atmosphere at this place. Nice and cozy that is not short of patrons but is not over crowded. I've always been able to find a spot and enjoy coming here on weekends with my Girlfriend for our study date sessions. The production level always increases here and enlightens my mood. Overall this coffee spot is my favorite. Great way to spend a morning/afternoon closing at the right time for you to enjoy the rest of your evening.

I wuv you Black Eye. I want to tell everyone about you and show you off on my arm. In Denver, there's a secret recipe to success as a coffee shop, I'll try and dissect it a little here. 1. Coffee - These guys do it right. I'm not a connoisseur, but I do know when I'm drinking good coffee and am not ashamed to say that after a month in Europe, I came back and ordered an espresso and found it on par with the rich and creamy shots I got in Paris. Tres bien! 2. Ambiance - Black Eye is beautiful inside, capitalizing on the Portland-style coffee house with reclaimed wood, vintage neon signs and the appropriate amount of light coming in from your garage door opening. It's so so easy to overdo this type of decor though, but Black Eye is tasteful and comforting. Their chairs are definitely sacrificing comfort for beauty, but it's excusable because of that glorious white-tiled backsplash behind the bar. ;) The clientele is trendy, but unlike some of the other shops in town (cough crema cough happy cough), I'm not put off by it. It's a cool, albeit Highlands-ish (if you live here, you'll get it) kind of crowd, but honestly I feel so at ease among everyone I'm not bothered at all. Genuine types of trendy people. 3. Staff - Half of the staff seems to be comprised of the principles of the shop and the other half are well-trained baristas. It's funny, I have been going here ritually for a few months straight and haven't made friends with anyone that works here, but I'm not exactly complaining. Everyone here is friendly enough. I wouldn't mind some more talkative types, but hey, these guys are good. I really just can't complain. 4. Amenities - Okay. These guys get to be my favorite shop in town for letting me plug in my laptop and sit around for hours at a time. I'm careful to continuously spend cash and not take advantage, but with this new Crema initiated trend of removing outlets, I got scared. No sign of plugs being covered though. Thank gosh. 5. Food - This is the one single area of improvement I'd like to see. They have a few options but nothing amazing. Maybe bagels and breakfast burritos in addition to the oatmeal and granola they offer would be cool? Or sandwiches and fruit at lunch time. I always have to leave to get food, which is fine but I wouldn't mind giving Black Eye even mooooore of my $$. Thanks for being awesome though guys. Seriously.

Very aesthetically pleasing...I love the hand painted sign and the fact that they sell sweet magazines and zines. I'd go more often if I lived close. It has become a treat now instead. They aren't super friendly but that doesn't bother me.

Ahhhhh....I'm not even sure I know how to describe the serenity of this place. It's pretty busy here all day....but in a good calming way! Maybe it's the atmosphere...more importantly the staff. So wonderful and knowledgeable! I work from home and this is often a go to place where I have creative meetings with clients. Wanna just relax and talk coffee? My mom loves to buy coffee beans from shops that roast their own...the server knew everything about every product they sell, made great recommendations and then bought my mom her own pour over as a way to say thank you. So sweet....Oh and little perk...almond milk! Yum!

Black eye in coffee lingo is coffee with two shots of espresso. Someday I'll have to order a black eye at Black Eye. Black Eye is a usually bright, always pretty space with great music, coffee, espresso, and tea. There's usually a small selection of smaller bites like pastries and granola too. Although there are a few smaller tables, the seating is mostly communal, one large communal table and two smaller communal tables made out of reclaimed wood, with metal chairs that are more comfortable than they look. There are a decent number of outlets. I love that it's usually very sunny inside because of the garage-style window. The space is so bright that sometimes I need sunglasses. When the sun's not out, and as the day gets later, it gets pretty dark inside. In the back, there's an interesting, though small assortment of produce and other grocery items, like pasta, spreads, and chocolate. They stop brewing coffee around 2:00 p.m., but pour over coffee, espresso based drinks, and tea are available all day long.

Unemployed trust-fund babies of Denver rejoice, you've found your mecca. I came here on a Thursday off to do some work and while business was light (around 8am) it steadily increased and there was not a seat available from about 9:30 on. It is pretty awesomely hipster-y decorated and you can't tell if their display hutches cost $10 or $1,000, so that's pretty cool. I have to grumble a bit when, after I paid for my $7 mocha, I was charged $3.24 for a "refill" of regular coffee. The barista has bangs and quirky glasses though so you know you can trust her. Will echo the awesome-ness of the natural lighting and big garage door. Would like to come back when it's not busy, but not sure that exists. Don't forget to bring your Macbook, flannel, or other oversized clothing item (sweater, beanie, bag, etc).

Nails the coffee vibe. It is immaculate and the coffee is amazing. Speaking about amazing, take a look at the boxer fighting a kangaroo.

Favorite coffee shop in Denver - on par with Crema but less of a scene. Their espresso is phenomenal, and so are their vegetarian breakfast sandwiches. I have never seen someone on staff act rude - in fact, I don't think I've even seen anyone who works there without a friendly smile on their face. They do get crowded on the weekends, so it's not ideal to bring your laptop or plan on "quiet time" on Sat & Sun. But, during the weekdays, they provide a calming environment to get a lot of work done. The seats by the roll up garage door are perfect for nice weather!

For those of you Denver natives, I come from the days of Muddy's, Paris on the Platte when the Platte River had bodies washing up, and The Merc. My local coffee shop experience has a history steeped in clove cigarettes, dog-eared copies of American Gods, and shitty service by snotty goth kids. These days, due to the sheer fact that the U.S. has embraced coffee as a whole, shops are catering to a variety of consumers. There seems to be this 'thing' happening with coffee shops within the last 3 years in Denver - places where people can meet to either telecommute or have business meetings, grab a cup of staunch coffee (typically a mixed type or espresso), and hang out for a few hours. Black Eye embraces this type of clientele. The staff was really friendly and had some recommendations for me as a first time patron. The chairs weren't the most comfy on the planet (I was there working for about 3 hours), but there were plenty of outlets to share and a community table in the middle of the shop. I'd recommend Black Eye for anyone that wants to get out of the house for a few hours to work. I didn't notice anything super different about their coffee menu, but they did have cold press coffee and rotate their coffee blends. They close early evening, so definitely more of a business 'vibe' versus the 'smoking cloves and debating philosophy until 4am' crowd.

The interior and ambiance is great, unless it's packed, which seems to be the norm. I'd say the coffee is the typical acidic trend that's happening. The staff could be much friendlier. So, tho it looks cute, took points off for how busy it is and just my disappointment with the coffee.

This place is my favorite coffee shop in the highlands hands down. They make the best lattes I've ever had, the house coffee/pour overs are always so good, and I like the assortment of food options (pastries, oatmeal, quiche, sandwiches in the PM). While all the people behind the counter are far cooler than I am, I love stopping here on weekends after a run.

Very hipster but in a good way. They know their coffee. Very neat atmosphere and it was pretty busy on a Tues morning. Never would've seen it as it's hidden in a little neighborhood. Great little place.

Yummy coffee, but a bit too hipster for my liking. If you're not wearing skinny jeans or sporting a mustache, you might feel out of place. Just get a vanilla latte with almond milk to go and you'll be set.

Black Eye Coffee! Why didn't you open up in MY neighborhood? I adore this place. First of all, the space is just beautiful. Every corner of this little shop looks so...instagramable, for lack of a better term. Delicious food, yummy coffee, all presented beautifully. Really friendly staff, not an ounce of barista snobbery. This place is a gem.

IMO this coffee shop is as good as it gets. The day I came here the espresso of the day was from Sweet Bloom. The barista dumped out my first cap because the design didn't mix correctly. It is nice to see that they pay close attention to details. Definitely will return.

Fly was in my latte, which subsequently was in my mouth. :( Disgusting. Won't be going back. Additionally, if a fly was in my latte, then certainly there could be flies crawling on the pastries that are left in the open air on the counter. I did contact the coffee shop and let them know, they did let me know that the humidity was an issue with the flies and offered to buy me a coffee as an apology. I wish I wanted to go back, but a dead fly in my mouth is too much. I really wish I was kidding here.

Wow, super simple concept with excellent coffee. Its a cool little hidden gem hipster community style joint. I heard they were ranked top 20 coffee shops in the US. At first I thought they would have many options and lots of things to try. I was incorrect. There was all of 5 or so options and they were fantastic. I got the Cappuccino which was one of the best I ever had, next to the one I had in France. I got my GF a iced mocha and I probably downed about a tenth of it before she even got a hold of it(sorry babe). It was just really that good, we will be coming back when we are in town.

Coming from New York, and having spent the first half to the week in San Francisco, I can confidently say that this is not one of the top if the top 20 coffee shops in the US. It was good, and a really cool atmosphere, but the coffee was nothing special at all, especially given how much great coffee there is out there. That said, I don't know the competitive set for Denver, so it may be amongst the best places in town.

I got a recommendation from someone to try out Black Eye Coffee and it did not disappoint. Bethany made me one of the best pour-overs I've ever had. The shop is really cool and minimalist. Next time I'm in Denver, I'll definitely stop by again.

Best coffeeshop in northwest Denver. Very clean with a friendly staff. Gets a bit crowded at times. Delicious scones and breakfast food. Baristas know what they're doing.

I've really enjoyed the nice atmosphere and easy access to a coffeeshop in the neighborhood. In general, the coffee and food (especially pastries) are good, however a bit overpriced. The expense of the drip coffee is overcome by the free refills when sitting here for a while. But that is the problem. 75% of the times I've come here to sit and do a bit of work, my computer won't connect to their internet. I delete and rejoin the network and restart my computer before bothering the barista. I say bother because the attitude of and look on the wait staff's face every time I ask if they can restart their server or give me a tip on connecting (I don't have problems with my computer on any other wifi network) makes me never want to return. Today's apathetic shrug accompanied by a snarky "Well, I'm not a technician. Guess it's just first come, first served," was about the last straw. I see little reason to return to sit down for an $8 cup of coffee and small cinnamon roll accompanied by no internet and bad customer service with other great neighborhood options like CommonGrounds, Huckleberry, or 2914 who have cheaper and equal (if not greater quality product), much friendlier and helpful attitudes, and seemingly zero technology and connectivity issues.

I decided this is my new favorite neighborhood coffee shop. Just the right size, not too crowded, good coffee (I'm picky about my almond milk lattes and Black Eye passed the test) and instant oatmeal in a jar. Yes please! Plus I can't resist a wall of white subway tile. Definitely a fan!

Another coffee "research" review (although my coffee shops visits for "research" are becoming more and more frequent). Definitely a place from right out of Portlandia. They even have a micro-grocer in the corner for people who like to pay greater-than-Whole-Foods-prices for artisan provisions. I thought the 8 ounce latte (because the husband and I no longer drink coffee, except when we do) was a perfect research size. As he pointed out, the latte was definitely more coffee-centric than milk-centric. I thought the coffee was very complex (but maybe it's because I've given a chance for my coffee-blown-out tastebuds to properly relax). We were also sort of hungry but the pastry selection appeared to be comprised of like three end-of-the-day pastries. They may have a food menu, but it wasn't terribly prominent so we just took the latte to go. They also have pour overs and the like if you're into that. I must admit, I was extremely turned off by this place when Westword reported on the opening and it was accompanied by artistic photographs of the owners looking all artsy and pretentious and whatnot and talking about how they were going to "ruin" Starbucks for people. I have no qualms with Starbucks. They have their place in the mainstream. And this is not a Starbucks competitor by any stretch. It's on par with Happy and Crema, for people who truly appreciate the drink for the beans and not for the flavored syrup.

I love black eye coffee shops industrial and simple ambiance!! My barista was very friendly and my coffee tasted great. They have a some super cute cups and tumblers that I would love to buy next time I'm in!

I believe they brew Boxcar coffee here, which is my favorite roaster in Colorado. They also have a nice selection of in-house pastries (I believe). Unfortunately, none of the pastries have ever blown me away. The decor inside is just perfect.

A good espresso, plenty of places to sit, and nice wooden decor that fits its own theme. I'd come here more often if it were close to me! The giant windows also let in amazing sunlight during the day, and it's open later than most coffeeshops.

Stopped in today and grabbed an iced latte w/ almond milk, and blueberry coffee cake. The shop is very cute inside, but the latte was just ok. I think it is likely due to the almond milk, which I just don't love in coffee (althoughI typically like more so than coconut milk, which was there only other non-dairy option). Will have to try again, and get a real latte next to really judge for sure. The coffee cake on the other hand was fantastic!

My macchiato was superb and my pour over (Huehuetenango) was also delicious. I am not very familiar with the different beans they were using, but I definitely want to learn more. The place was pretty full of people working and people conversing. It seems like a great place to hang out. The pastries and green juice looked good. I will definitely be back to try out some of their other options. They have given me a reason to drink espresso again!!! I have had so many interactions with pretentious baristas lately, that I barely dare to venture into shops anymore. Refreshingly, Black Eye had knowledgeable baristas who were friendly. I don't need to be treated like a queen, but I am spending money, so I like to be treated like a human, at the least. I can finally enjoy espresso again!

I am been here twice now. This is a great place. The coffee is outstanding and they have guest roasts. They serve oatmeal in a mason jar and have a few food offerings. There is a small organic market in the back of the shop that has a really good cheese and vegetables. This is a fun locally owned shop. Well worth looking for.

Coffee shops are a dime a dozen in this town, so why would you want to come Black Eye instead of one of the other 20 in the area? For me it's two reasons. 1. The atmosphere. I love the vibe, it's laid back with a nostalgic feel. The furniture, the building, the art are all unique and give it a feeling that I don't get at other places. This sounds minor but the music is always top notch as well. Sometimes is jazz and other times it's soft rock, but regardless it always seems to fit. 2. The product. The coffee and the food always hit the spot. Everything from the iced coffee to the pastries is solid. It's a good place to grab a coffee, read a book and decompress a little. The free wifi makes it conducive to get some work or internet browsing done too.

If you seek quality in your espresso beans, and in the craft that goes behind making a good cappuccino, then this place is for you! Real, fresh ground espresso beans, just the right amount of milk (not to much, not too little) and foamed to perfection. I have not found a better cappuccino in the Highlands, let alone Denver. On most days, there is also a selection of 2 different espresso beans so you get to pick your flavor profile. Pretty sweet! Pour over? Yup, they have that (also delicious). Cortado, Americano, you name it. Regular ol' cup of coffee? No problem. The muffins, scones, doughnuts and quiches are great, too, if you're looking for a snack to go along with your top quality coffee beverage. Great staff, and great ambience.

So I've recently relocated to Denver and I've been trying a lot of coffee shops in this fine city. HANDS down, the coffee here is among the best. Know: This isn't a exactly a ....shall we say.... professional crowd. Prepare to listen to some soft-spoken granola-munchers wax on about how three months in (insert fairly tame foreign destination) changed their lives (who are we kidding - this happens in every coffee shop). Bright eyed, trendy-but-not-prententious booky types and timid artists mingle with some younger hip parents and I'm-quirky-and-cute types hopefully using their macbooks to either work or search for work. Either way, they're mostly a pleasant group. You won't find Don Draper here, but everyone is pretty friendly. Ambience? Wonderful. Black Eye is a bright, spacious shop with nice polished concrete floors and a sweet bar fashioned from reclaimed wood. Tables are from some sort of interesting reclaimed industrial source as well. It's clean. It's bright. It's tasteful. It smells great. Plus, it's somehow clean and sparse and also warm and welcoming. Most of all, the coffee is outstanding. I've only had the pour-overs, but all three were great - and from what I hear they cycle out roasts frequently. You can get a pour over (sort of like a chemex where the barista spends a few minutes hand making just your cup) for just $3.50 (although you should add a nice tip! They make it just for you!). Go here. It's great. And if you wear a tie every now and then and have traveled the world and don't think everyone within earshot should know about it, come sit or have a meeting and broaden the clientele. You won't be disappointed!

This is an amazing local coffee shop! I go here frequently in the mornings for fresh baked snacks and iced coffee. They have different flavors of French macarons every day and they are to die for. The cold pressed juices are made fresh and are delicious as well as healthy. The staff are friendly and kind.

  • John L.

Had a cappuccino and a pour over while I was there - don't judge me, I was working. Excellent coffee which shouldn't come as a surprise from all the other reviews. Minus a half star because the internet wasn't working - could get on the WiFi but not actually connect to web sites (Tip #1 - use the Highland Tavern's unsecured network). Minus another half star because the communal seating is a bit unnecessary (Tip #2 - if you can avoid it, don't take a middle seat unless you want a hipster to glare at you every time you need to ask them to squeeze by so you can get coffee/water/empty yourself of your drinks).

  • Bill W.

The epitome of the cooler-than-thou hipster coffee shop, which is mostly good because they have great coffee and cool decor. However, along with that usually comes the snobby attitude, which I would say fits Black Eye. I've found the baristas are generally (not all) grumpy and reluctant to strike up any conversation or even thank you on your way out.

Great coffee, really good granola. Tried their gluten free granola and it was really good as well. A little more space would be nice... but all in all they serve it up.

This place is fantastic. Thanks to all the other 5 star reviews my friend and I found this place today. They've only been open 6 days but they have coffee - and customer service - down to a fine art. Everyone was super personable and helpful. We hung outside enjoying our drinks in the great weather, not realizing they close at 3pm, and the staff was too polite to kick us out. Highly recommend this place for the wonderful coffee and personable staff. 5 stars indeed.

Seriously delicious coffee, and I'm picky. Sadly, nowhere comfortable to sit. The tables are "community" style, and I just wanted a quiet corner to get some writing done. The chairs were uncomfortable, and my table mates were distracting. Atmosphere is important, and I just couldn't stay comfortable for even one coffee. Next time I'll bring a to-go mug.

Open garage doors and people sitting in chairs inside and out...loved that! Tried the cortado which I had never had before I think I learned I don't like it as much as my lattes but even at that it was still good just strong. Although I didn't have a pastries they looked delicious. There weren't individual tables but the big long one worked just fine for getting work done. The baristas seemed to really know most of the people coming in which let me know this must be a great spot for the neighborhood and they have regulars. I would recommend a stop in to get stuff done.

Great coffee created by excellent and very consistent baristas who actually give a shit! Kinda LA and I love that but very laid back and just what it should be . Cool and not presumptuous.. I've had the opportunity to drink coffee all across North America and Black Eye is really good! xo

Stopped here immediately after landing in Denver on the recommendation of a local friend and was so pleased!! The cold brew iced coffee is UNREAL! I added milk & simple syrup before tasting it, and I shouldn't have, the coffee alone is so good it doesn't need anything else. I also got a brown sugar scone, fresh out of the oven, which really was a cross between a biscuit and a scone, but more moist and wow it was equally amazing. Staff are friendly too! Wish I was in Denver longer.

The service at this place is deplorable. Both employees that were working acted like it was a such a pain to answer any question I had and they only had one gluten-free option on the menu, some beet and quinoa salad that was DISGUSTING. I am used to some less than palatable gluten-free options but this salad was so gross I couldn't even eat half of it. The coffee was alright, nothing to write home about. I just was truly disappointed by the arrogance of the staff and would not return to this establishment.

This place is chill as a cucumber...........I was visiting Denver for the day and a buddy of mine, a Denver local and a connossieur of fine coffee establishments in the mile high city assured me that this was THE spot for coffee. Everything here is chill as it gets -- the glassware used, the menus, baristas, you name it. There are about 4 seats at the bar, seats at tables/benches, and a few small individual tables. Small little organic market in the back with various odds and ends. The place is fairly small (about 1000 sq ft) so there's a good chance everyone in the store will hear your conversation if you speak above "normal" volume. The coffee selection was good -- pour-over coffees to espresso/cappuccinos are the norm here. The cappuccino I ordered was good and went down smoothly. Good espresso, foam, -- not the best cappuccino I've ever had-- but we ain't in Berkeley any more, Toto. Definitely a chill place to get high end coffee, chillax, engage in convo, admire a bit of local talent, and surf the internet. Recommended.

Black Eye is my neighborhood coffee shop. When I first moved here and was waiting for the moving truck to arrive with my coffee maker, this was the place I walked to for a strong cup of coffee and a scone (a scone that I kind of wished I had ordered two of - yes, it was that good). There are lots of eye-pleasing things (coffee bean and merchandise displays, pastries, a magazine and book section) to look at while waiting for your drink or food. They have a food menu, though I've only snagged scones or macarons, both of which I suggest trying at some point. You can't go wrong with a house coffee, latte, or black iced tea. Try the latte iced with almond milk and take a seat at one of the reclaimed wood tables.

Black Eye is a local favorite and a great neighborhood coffee shop. It's in our neighborhood and has the atmosphere that brings in the neighborhood of Denver (Sunnyside/Highlands). The coffee is great, and they usually have a fantastic selection of pour-over coffees available. Great and friendly service, and the drinks are well made--they emphasize the coffee over the milk in lattes and cappuccinos. Hope they stick around for a while because it's a great place to walk to and it's quickly becoming one of the neighborhood gathering spots.

Great coffee, cool space! I was visiting LoHi and wandered into this gem of a coffee shop on Sunday morning. The space is really cool and inviting, with a big table and space to spread out or talk (unlike a lot of little crammed coffee places). They also had some pastry options if you're looking for more than liquid. The coffee itself was great (I had a medium dark roast, black). I'll definitely be back.

  • Peter H.

Excellent Coffee! I have lived in LoHi before it was called LoHi and before it was as hip as it is now. A new coffee shop is always a very, very welcome addition in any neighborhood and should really bring the community together. This is especially true in a location that does not have a walk/drive by traffic as there would be on Osage, Pecos Street or anywhere on 32nd Ave. Having said that, the place has a great stylish, yet a bit cool interior. The little grocery store in the back is super attractive, however from a financial perspective over a long period not sustainable. For one, there is barely a sign outside the door indicating a coffee shop let alone a grocer. The coffee quality is one of the, if not THE best I have had in Denver. It is prepared with great care and not rushed through the process. Food is another subject however. The staff makes it rather clear that this is a coffee shop, foremost. I respect that. But then again, it is a business and we as the residents hope a long term addition to our amazing neighborhood. But let's face it, selling coffee to clients that sip it over two hours over their computer is hardly a money making proposition. To have long-term viability they will need to substantially increase revenue. Lastly, while the staff in no ways unfriendly has on every single visit been more than distant. Yet, it is exactly the customer interaction that makes you want to come back to a neighborhood spot over and over. Maybe if I was a hipster in skinny Jeans I might get a smile?! Otherwise, I will just take mine to go... and pick up a bite to eat from somewhere else.

I must be here on a bad day. The service is extremely poor. I requested a coffee, should not have been too out of the ordinary and a scone. A hand was put out for my money and no "thank you", "here you go," whatever! I thought this place was suposto be friendly and a "neighborhood" coffee shop. I am from the neighborhood! The scone was literally thrown on my plate, not handed to me, just left on the counter as the barista turned around to talk with his co-worker. I stood there waiting for my coffee and literally 5 minutes later, sat down thinking this is going to take longer than I thought. Another few minutes later, the barista looked at me and said, "your coffee's been sitting here." The barista seemed to have plenty of time to converse with the other customers, I'm not looking for a new friend, just some customer service. I'll not be back, it was a less than enjoyable coffee shop experience.

  • Russ D.

Filled with local hipster younger crowd, the coffee was OK, just coffee. The Americano was pretty good, as Americanos go. It seemed unusually quiet despite 18+ people inside. I felt I had to whisper not to disturb the others hipsters almost silently sipping their beverages. The pastry selection was decent. The tables made of repurposed things like doors were neat. The cups were flimsy. Like collapsing when trying to secure the lid, spilling decaf latte all about. They were branded with the company name. Try it at least once. You'll be glad you did.

Magnificent! Coffee was beautifully prepared and service warm and attentive. We had some breakfast pastries which were amaze-balls and breakfast tamales which were, with out exception, the best I've ever had. Bravo!!!

This is a coffee shop run by pretentious pricks who have attempted to co-op the culture and struggles of working people into a marketing gimmick for selling overpriced coffee and food to other pretentious pricks who are busy gentrifing the neighborhood. I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

  • Emily C.

Amazing coffee, great service, and they make their select few menu items incredibly well. Cappuccino was created to perfection, and though it was still morning, I saw a house-made burrata salad on the menu and had to order it. Snagged a seat by the roll-up door to watch people go by and share a moment with my buddy. Gorgeous seating inside, fun dog and people watching outside. Before too long, my salad was delivered by a friendly server, and it was definitely worth the money. MASSIVE cheese sphere encompassed by fresh greens, avocado, grapefruit, and nuts. Writing this, I'm already craving it again. I gotta go back. Yes, the coffee is great. I'm in the industry, so I'm very critical of coffee, and this was fantastic. Thank you, Black Eye, for doin' it right.

Walked over for a caffeine fix as we were waiting for our table at Root Down! Love the open window of this cafe. Decent amount of seating with a few tables, a bench, and a communal table ---Cold brew: just okay, I've had better They also sell tumblers/bottles with their logo on it, juice, food, chocolate, and nuts NOTE: they have some pastries out on the counter but it seemed pretty unsanitary since I saw a hair on one of the plates and on one of the macarons

I went a little crazy with coffee on my short trip to Denver and of all the places I tried Black Eye is my favorite! My boyfriend and I both got bug eyed over how delicious the coffee tasted. They had the taste and texture down perfectly. There was a perfect balance between espresso, milk, and vanilla in my vanilla late. We also had their ham and cheese breakfast sandwich and wasn't too satisfied with the small portion for the price ($6). The decor is also great and they have little things such as books and magazines on sale around the coffee shop.

A lovely place indeed! This Lo-Hi spot will really suit your coffee, studying, catching, reading, or whatever-the-occasion needs. Though small, the charming space is perfectly decorated with local art, fresh floral arrangements, greenery, succulents, and even a garage door that constitutes as one of the walls they pull up during a beautiful, sunny day. Indeed, the shot is lovely, but that's not the only aspect that makes it one of my favorite local spots to grab a deliciously adorable cortado solo or to host a meeting with a potential partner - what makes it my favorite is the laid back attitude evident in everything at Black Eye Coffee. The ambiance, the staff, the patrons; everything here is on another level that instantly relaxes you. It's not too loud, the staff isn't too slow or too fast, you never feel pressured to leave a table (though sometimes there isn't enough seating), but somehow they've managed to perfectly balance coffee shop chaos with a relaxing vibe that can only be found at Black Eye Coffee. The menu looks and always smells super tempting, but I have never had the pleasure of dining here; however their new menu item, the quinoa salad with strawberries and cashews, looked enticing, fresh, and something that won't send you into a guilty down spiral. The coffee is prepared in mason jars - only perpetuating the cuteness - while soothing, hip Indie music plays in the background. It's just my kind of place.

  • Tiffany N.

I really love the ambiance of Black Eye Coffee. From the open garage door letting in fresh air to the exposed brick wall it's the kind of place I find really charming. I also like the fact that the tables feel very communal and there is something about the space that promotes a feeling of wanting to sit together versus other coffee spots where people become attached to being the only person at their table. This is definitely a place that believes in the craft of coffee creating and if you are a coffee geek you will probably enjoy it here as you can order pour overs, cold brewed coffee, cortados, and the like. I had just a plain coffee though and really enjoyed it. And while I didn't indulge they did offer free refills without a limit I believe. We also grabbed something to eat from their small menu. I went with a simple eggs and toast, but they also have a veggie and non-veggie sandwich of the day as well as a decent selection of pastries. The Wi-Fi was reliable and it wasn't too loud so I would say Black Eye is definitely a good spot to get some work done, but it's also a nice place to just sit for a chat or read a book.

This is by far my favorite coffee spot in Denver. Not to mention one of the best almond milk lattes I've ever had. The quality of food and coffee is top notch. It's super hip inside. This coffee spot might be hip, but the staff is friendly, not like those ultra hipster coffee spots. They have their own house made bitters and shrubs for sale. And Clever cold pressed juices. Their homemade pastries and macaroons are delicious. And their breakfast veggie and pork sandwiches are oh so good.

Last week I proposed to my girlfriend at this very special coffee shop in the Highlands of Denver. Not only is their coffee and espresso to die for, the staff were so sweet to my fiancé and I- even surprised us with a cake after they had let me pack the place out with 40 of our closest friends and family. Always rock a pour over when you go to Black Eye- they do a phenomenal job. My (now) fiancé and I have always been coffee tourists in Denver, and although there are many great shops and roasters to go to -Black Eye is definitely amongst the elite. Perfect place for a first date. Perfect place to propose to the love of your life 14 months later. Excellent craft coffee. Get to this shop as soon as possible- you won't be sorry!

A rad little hidden gem in the Highlands for sure! The atmosphere is quiet + calm, so I love to come here to get work done during the day. The interior is awesome with exposed brick and is the perfect place to warm up with a coffee during the wintertime. It's a bit small, but it never feels packed or overcrowded like most of the other cafés in Denver and I really appreciate that.

Nasty food and the worst coffee ever. My wife and I came to Denver from California and decided to look up a breakfast spot nearby. The employees were rude. The coffee tasted like it was spoiled. The food was horrible! I ordered a simple plate of 2 eggs, bacon and toast. The toast was soaking with butter and the eggs had un-cracked peppercorns!! One of the black peppercorns cracked my tooth! This place is for dirty hipsters who like to be around other dirty hipsters. This was my worst experience at a restaurant! Stay away!!!!!

I love this coffee shop. I don't drink coffee, just tea. I am a huge chai fan. Chai lattes and breakfast items are excellent. Small plates (breakfast and lunch) usually served with greens or other side dishes. They have very few items on the menu but they are flawless. Inventive but great combination of flavors. Great atmosphere and super nice staff.

Had high hopes for Black Eye Coffee, but I'm not in a rush to go back the next time I'm in Denver. The location itself was charming and I didn't have a problem with parking. The staff was crazy friendly and helpful. But it broke my coffee snob heart when I ordered a latte and scone and neither lived up to the $8 tab and the reputation preceding it. The latte was an average offering in a world of above average coffee shops and the scone tasted like it had been made a week earlier and should have been thrown out. Again, Black Eye was a cool place but needs to step up its coffee game if it wants to stand out from the crowd.

We had just moved to the city and we were looking for a new coffee shop and breakfast when we stumbled upon this gem! It did seem like an amazing place to study and hang out!

Connoisseur-level coffee in a comfy, small space. Heavy dose of hipness along with your $4 pour over cup, so beware if you're only seeking a cheap and quick fix. Bean-lovers and espresso hounds, this is your spot.

This is a perfect coffee shop. The accents were thoughtful. The atmosphere was perfect for both socializing and working. People didn't stay too long or come and go. I'm burying the lede here - I had the best egg sandwich I've ever had there. Ultra fresh and hot, the eggs were perfectly cooked, and the often-neglected English muffin was expertly warmed up. Plenty of heft and very satisfying. Oh and the coffee was excellent.

I absolutely love this coffee shop. Visited for my first time and immediately fell in love the atmosphere is quiet but welcoming and the menu includes coffee and food items, at great prices. I had an iced chai and loved it, then ended up ordering egg and toast (only $4!) and loved it as well. They make jam for the toast in house and it is amazing. Although it is a little hidden I have found my coffee shop! Hope it doesn't get too busy and I will definitely be back soon again!

Loved the vibe here, very minimalist and warehousie. It definitely had the feel of a Seattle cafe serving up top tier coffee and espresso. It was also truly a 3rd wave coffee bar, offering lighter roasts so that you could distinctively taste all the nuance involved with the bean they were using. My cappuccino was excellently pulled with a strong aroma and delicious flavor. As far as the Highlands go, Black Eye is the best cafe I've found. PS.
