We bought the groupon for this place as neither of us has tried Ethiopian food before. We were pretty excited. There's a lot of space in the restaurant, we were seated immediately. There was only one woman working and she was extremely friendly. We tried sambusa and azifa for the appetizers. They were both tasty, and the latter was heavy on the horseradish, which was just ducky with us. I had lamb tibs for my entree and Jess had the awaze tibs. Both of them were excellent and we devoured everything quickly. The baklava here is good, a small bite size for each of us and not overly sweet. We were warned about the food being very spicy, but neither of us found that to be so. Excellent flavor though. The sponge bread that comes with all the servings is good but a little goes a long way I may back off that next time. The bar even offers Ethiopian wine and beer. We will definitely be willing to come back here I really enjoyed the food.

It has been years since I went to an Ethiopian restaurant, so I don't really have much to compare Axum to. With that said, the food was awesome. I generally don't like spices like curry and Rosemary, but I really enjoyed my visit to Axum. We got a Groupon for four, which ended up providing us with way more food than we needed. My wife and I got #18 and #50. I couldn't stop eating. But what really set this place up for success was our waitress Marry. She was so kind, genuine and helpful. She didn't seem to mind that we asked stupid questions like, "How do you pronounce _____?" The dining room was much nicer than I expected. I definitely will be back here. Maybe not soon because I'd still rather have a steak, sushi, or Korean BBQ, but it was a great experience.

Lately I have been getting to go food from this place since Red Sea Rest never answer their phone every time I called. Food was good but I wish their put little more ingredient to make the taste stronger. Even sometime I have hard time to communicate on the phone with the phone over taker, she did it right. Thank you

i was trying to count on two hands the number of Ethiopian restaurants I have been to. Most have been here in Denver, and the search is still on. Axum, though is on my repeatable list. The food and the pricing were on par and I thought the atmosphere was great. If you are also into trying and finding a few staple Ethiopian places this should be one of them. They have rare and raw options on a few of their dishes. The house made honey wine was delicious. Go for it. DT

I've had a lot of mediocre experiences with several Ethiopian restaurants here in Denver, while still not my favorite, Axum was well worth price for what we paid. I went with a friend around 7:30 this past Saturday. Rather than looking at the menu, I asked our server to come out with a combination of several dishes for us to try and share. When the food came out, we got 10 portions of different vegetarian and meat dishes and all of them were quite good, but I do have to say that I enjoyed the vegetarian dishes more than the meat dishes. My friend who I went with actually commented "wow, finally good food in Denver!" (Despite the fact that I don't agree, he's not a fan of the Denver dining scene.) The portion amounts were huge too, we were only able to eat about 2/3 of what was brought to us and our server asked if something was wrong because we didn't finish. How much is this going to set you back? If you got what we did plus a glass of honey wine each, it's about $40. Not a bad deal! There are usually Groupons out there for Axum, but those are for set entrees - I don't think you can do their combination platters with those though.

Excellent service. Excellent staff. Excellent food. Extremely clean establishment. All around perfect restaurant.

Let me summarize by saying yuk. The disgusting food was complimented by terrible service. We went to try this place out and weren't familiar with the menu. After a long wait for our server to come to the table, she was unrelenting in her ability to disclose any information to us. Her only comment was "everything is good." That was her answer to questions like what is the most popular dish, what's her favorite, and even more specific questions about dishes. I can't recall whatever mush we ordered, but the mushy flatbread just made everything worse. We laughed so hard at how awful the food was, I almost forgot to leave a review.

Some friends and I went for lunch a few weeks ago. At first we were the only patrons in the restaurant, but it picked up a little. The sambusas were wonderful! The injera was perfect. I was a little confused by the blandness of some of the lentil and vegetarian options. Since this was my first time here, I'll have to go back and see if it was just an 'off' spice day. Drawback is that's quite a drive for me, but I'll give it another shot.

First and foremost, I want to send my BIG Thank you to Axum Restaurant. Prior the BIG event, I have been to AXUM several day earlier to ask whether they offer GLUTEN FREE FLATBREAD aka INJERA for those Gluten Intolerant. The staff said, YES they could do it, as long as they have like 2 or 3 days NOTICE before the actual event. On Saturday evening of September 14th 2013, 9 friends and I head down to AXUM Restaurant for an Ethiopian Feast. YES we brave the STORM even the Flooded Roads along COLFAX just to be there. The Dinner appointment at AXUM was at 17:30hrs. I came in early as usual, and the staff at AXUM had our table ready for us. YES I cannot deny, there are some misses and hits that evening... for one the SERVICE to bring out the FOOD can be slow... But My Oh My, by the time the evening went away, this establishment is indeed packed to the brim. YES this is one of the establishment in town which offer Ethiopian Cuisine that can afford to have LARGE GROUPS! SCORE! Thank GOD for that! We were given the Menu, and everyone is given water. Some of my friends opt to have Beer and Soda that evening. From the Extensive Menu my friends decide to order the following items, in which these were the ones that I can remember : * Kategna ($3.00) * Regular Tibs ($12.95) * Awaze Tibs ($12.95) * Doro Wot ($9.95) * Dero Begomen ($10.95) * Vegetarian Combo ($10.95) * Rice with Lamb Alicha ($12.50) At 18:10hrs, the first Appetizer of Kategna was sent to our table. Then at 18:35hrs, the Main Entrees were sent to our table. The portions are generous and the pricing is affordable and reasonable. One of my friends is a regular at this establishment. AXUM also offer BREAKFAST options from 9am to 12pm. That evening, I opt to have the Awaze Tibs, ($12.95) but specifically requested it to be SPICY. The Awaze Tibs was lightly sautéed tender cubed pieces of lamb mixed with their home made awaze sauce and onion, garlic and jalapeño pepper. It did not come out Spicy as I want to, but the Flavors of all the Pieces of Lamb were well balance and delicious! Our server also offer EXTRA Baskets of Injera to our table that evening. At the end of the Dinner, when our server approached our table and asked us how are things, we answered it was ALL GOOD. Our server was surprised when I told her my order was NOT Spicy enough. She even mentioned that I was the first person, to tell her, the FOOD was NOT SPICY enough. Then I told her I am used to SPICY Food and love my food to be SPICY. Everyone enjoyed and like their order that evening. One of my friends also purchase the Baklava ($3.50). She like it. She told me, the Baklava has a hint of Orange Blossom or Rosewater in it. Another added Bonus in my books is that Axum allows everyone at my table to have SEPARATE Checks. That definitely eliminate any headaches for everyone. Everyone is Happy indeed. I even purchase The Meat Combo ($11.25) for Hubs but I think they put the "wrong" order in my TO GO Order box. Hubs like the meat but he is NOT into the Injera at all. This was the case, coz he is NOT exposed to eating the Injera, as much as I was. All in all, I don't mind returning and hope to order other options in the future. Thank you Axum. Thank you. @204/2013

I have eaten here a few times. My Friend is Ethiopian and this is NOT her favorite restaurant...but it has a much nicer atmosphere and I think the service is better. Food is not as flavorful as I've had. Even when we order our Combo platter Spicy...it's rather bland...and I'm not a "eat everthing so hot you sweat girl!" But even my mom who lives in the Wisconsin...thought it was bland...And she hardly even salts anything! :) Besides it not being spicy enough for me...it's a good place! Those reviews I read on here...that diss'ed this place do not know Ethiopian as this is the same menu at nearly ALL of the restaurants! So instead of say Yuk...why not just say, you not a fan of the food style! Jeez!

I like this place, but I don't really like the food. There are, in my opinion, better options in Denver. Apparently you can check it out at a pretty fair price for brunch though, and maybe stay for the late night dance party that appears to ensue, as they have a little stage, and stay open late, after they have stopped serving food.

I haven't reviewed AXUM? I came here with a friend as part of our "try ALL the Ethiopian restaurants" tour. Seemed like Groupon/LivingSocial/etc were having a lot of deals on Ethiopian in the spring. This restaurant was our first stop. It's kind of empty inside. Do not let this deter you from trying their delicious fare. We ordered the sambusa for appetizer (yum) and then two combination platters. We knew we loved the veggie dishes, so we ordered 2 Gomen Wots and 2 Mesir Wot (spicy red lentils). we ordered lamb and doro wot for our meat choices. When they say "spicy" they aren't kidding. It's spicy. And you see I'm Asian, so I can eat some spice. They don't play. My nose was running by the time we finished dinner. I know we ordered dessert, but I can't remember what we got. WE WERE SO FULL. And we left lamenting that we couldn't go back the next day. Service was excellent and friendly. Food was delicious. What more could I want? Nothing. Except a return trip.

My first foray into Ethiopian food left me wanting more. I LOVE the bread they serve - a sort of spongy crepe that tastes like sourdough bread and covers the entire plate. I ordered lamb tibs. The flavor was great, very herby and buttery, but the meat was too overcooked for my taste. I've noticed most African and Middle Eastern restaurants cook the meat well done, so I think the next time I go to Axum I'll try some vegetarian fare instead. The previous reviews about the temperature in the building are true - I went during a snow storm and was FREEZING sitting next to the single pane window that faced out to Colfax. The proprietors clearly don't think their patrons' comfort is a huge priority. But other than that, I had a positive experience with the food and service and Axum and I will definitely be back to try more.

The Dude and I made it into Axum on a Google Deal. Or maybe it was a Groupon. One of those deal-y thingers. Ya'all know what I'm talking about. The deal itself was for two apps, two entrees, and a dessert for $20. In all, it was basically half-off for the dinner. Unfortunately, the first time we tried was a Saturday night when they have a buffet ($17.99/person, I believe the lady said) and belly dancing. They were not honoring the deals that night (shucks). It would have been helpful if the Deal had stated such, but not sure if that's the deal company's fault or Axum's for not specifying. Either way, just FYI if they run another in the future. We tried again on a week night. The place was not busy, with only a few other tables besides ours. And two or three more coming in as we dined. This time we were successful with our coupon. For our appetizers, I ordered the Sambusa, and Dude got Timatim FitFit (injera mixed with tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, and herbs). The Sambusa was stuffed with lentils and nicely fried; served with a sweet-spicy honey dipping sauce, it was the right start to a good meal. My fault for not asking, but what we really wanted for our mains was the vegetarian combo. However, the deal listed "entree" (not "combinations") so I kept my mouth shut and ordered an entree (wahn waaahn). I got the Miser Wot -- red lentils cooked with spices. Dude ordered Atakilit Wot, a dish of cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. He was kind enough to order a vegetarian entree so we could share. It appeared, based on another table's order, that the veggie combo could have been ordered. So I kicked myself for not asking while stuffing myself with Wots. Both dishes were served together on a big ol' piece of injera, with House Salad between the two of them. And that's where the fourth star falls off. I was really excited for the salad because something about the salads at other Ethiopian restaurants I've been to always have some super delicious flavor that, try as I might, can never be replicated at home. This one has no delightful jalapenos, and no striking flavor. It was basically lettuce with tomatoes, onions, and vinegar. Still good, just not awesome. The entrees themselves were pretty on-par with other places we've had them at. For dessert the choices were cheesecake or Baklava. Kind of random overall, but we decided on the Baklava since we don't often have it. It was served warm, and spiced with a lot of ginger. The two individual pieces were just the right size to finish off the meal. The service was typical for this type of dining; I think there was only one person taking care of all the tables. It worked out just fine, as Ethiopian dining tends to be a little more leisurely (IMO) than many other places. As a bonus, we got to watch "Mrs. Doubtfire" on mute! That, coupled with the mix of hip-hop beats and then what sounded like Coltrane on the stereo made for quit the mix. While Axum wouldn't likely be my first pick for Ethiopian dining, I would visit again (especially if they run another deal!). We weren't really feeling it that particular Saturday night, but perhaps in the future we'll give belly dancing and the buffet a go.

Bring your coat... this place is chilly inside. Even during prime dinner hours filled with families and couples ... this didn't make much difference in warming the place up. We had to wait longer than planned for everything. I noted there was just ONE worker---server/hostess/bartender/ busser/manager, all in one. I did, later, spot someone in back cause we thought possibly the server was prepping our meals, too!? Gee, maybe Axum is trying to cut costs? Otherwise for an Ethiopian restaurant, I would give it 5 stars. The food was as anticipated. I got the Veggie Combo and my friend got the recommended Chicken dish. Everything was good: right taste, temperature, and good amount of food. The room appeared clean and properly maintained. The solo worker was pleasant and efficient. I will come again... just maybe with a heavier coat or I'll just wait till summer?

This is one of my favorite restaurants to go to! I've been a customer for a couple years and always make time to eat here whenever possible. My mother lives in Kansas so whenever she visits she always requests to eat at Axum! Great service, great food, great prices!

I have never had Ethiopian food. I took my biz partner. We were exited. We ordered many things A sampler of sorts, as we have never had the type before. Lamb, beef, etc. I was expecting more spice and seasoning from a place hailing from a place that has odd proteins like camel and goat. You know, to cover the taste. It was blah. The worst part was the injera. In making injera, teff flour is mixed with water and allowed to ferment for several days, as with sourdough starter. As a result of this process, injera has a strong sour and bitter taste. The injera is then ready to bake into large flat pancakes. Gross taste. I coulndn't bear it. If you can get past the rancid taste of this "bread", then it is okay.

Okay, I'll admit, I was nervous about this place. Like, really nervous. But, Yelp, you never lead me astray and you didn't this time either. While the location and building are quite sketch, this place is a winner. Truly ethnic food-delicious and spicy! EXCELLENT service. Thankful that I went out of my comfort zone and tried this place because it was definitely a dining experience.

Friend and I came here with a deal and we ended up with SO MUCH FOOD. definitely try out the combinations. We opted for a meat combo and a veggie combo. I think the best thing I ate was the Kitfo!.. and maybe the chicken drumsticks. and the lentils. Yeah, basically I liked all of it. They give you injera to eat with the food and it can fill you up FAST. Ended up stuffed but had to get dessert and chose the baklava. It was a little on the sweet(er) side but everything else was spot on!

Wow! I enjoyed a fabulous valentine's day dinner date at Axum. We asked for the chef's top selections of both veggie and meat dishes, and we were not disappointed! I am pretty sure that I would eat anything that is served here. Highly recommend the home-made honey wine.

As a relative newcomer to Ethiopian cuisine, I'm game to try out new places. I snapped up a Groupon and away we went to Axum. I had high expectations. The restaurant is open and bright, both by way of lighting and the paint colors on the walls. A few pieces of Ethiopian art are dispersed around the room but the majority of the decor is Americanized (or the result of a liquidized Chinese restaurant, depending upon who you ask). You won't find any traditional round basket tables here. The seating is square tables topped with layered tablecloths. There is also a large bar and an enormous TV that was tuned to a basketball game while we were there. We were surprised and encouraged by the number of people in the restaurant on a Monday evening. There were about 10 to 12 tables while we were there. Of course, there was only one person waiting on all of the tables. She was lovely and kind but, not surprisingly, the service was extremely slow. It took an eternity to get our drinks. They might have gotten two rounds out of us but we didn't have that long to hang around. Our discount deal was for two appetizers, two entrees and a dessert. We chose the sambusa (pastry shell filled with lentils, onions and jalapenos) and the azifa (lentil salad seasoned with horseradish and jalapenos) for our appetizers. The sambusa arrived burned. I would have sent it back but knew it would take too long to get a replacement. The not burned parts were not bad. The two accompanying sauces were sweet and sweet and hot but nothing exciting. I can only say one thing about the azifa: horseradish. Well, at least I tried it. We opted for a couple of meat and veggie combos as our entrees. I was disappointed that not every meat dish is an option in the combination plate, including my favorite, zilzil tibs. We both ordered doro tibs (boneless, skinless chicken in sauce) and key wot (stewed beef) for our meats and we both had the atakilit wot (cabbage and carrots) as one of our three veggie choices. My other veggies were kik alicha (split yellow peas) and carrot and fesolia (I assume fesolia means "green beans"). Mr. P. had the gomen wot (chopped collard greens) and shiro (chick peas). The verdict? Bland. Tasteless. Everything. Even the injera lacked the customary sourish flavor. Just as the decor has been Americanized, I'm afraid the food has been, too. Disappointing. Unsatisfying. Sad. Oh, did I mention our dessert options? Cheesecake or baklava. The end.

AMAZING food! Wonderful service! I never expect a quick experience when dining Ethiopian, because that is part of the culture and foundation of the delicious food. What never seems to be missing is friendly staff that make you feel wanted. We were pleasantly surprised to have it ALL at Axum.....delicious food served in a timely manner by a lovely server that was working hard to make sure everyone in the restaurant was happy. I've always been a huge fan of Queen of Sheba Ethiopian restaurant but may have found a new favorite. We had one meat combo and one veggie combo. Both were incredible. We left full and very happy. Can't recommend this place highly enough! P.S They are also very reasonably priced!

We went on a double date with a groupon my friend purchased for dinner for 4. It wound up being a great deal. 4 appetizers, entrees, 2 desserts for $40. They paid for that and we paid for the drinks. I'll start with the drinks. I read the reviews before we went since none of us had ever had Ethiopian before and noted several comments about the honey wine. I almost bought a carafe but thought we better try it first. Wow. It's very sweet. Too sweet for us. Not that we didn't like it, we just thought a carafe would be a bit much. They do have a nice variety of Ethiopian beers that I enjoyed. They also have domestic beers and wines. So we all perused the menu having no idea where to start but then we realized in the back of 1 menu there was a glossary that we found quite helpful. We each chose an appetizer and all shared. I honestly can't tell you what we had but we all enjoyed it and that gave us hope for our dinner. I ordered the meat and veggie combo and a friend ordered the meat combo. I was surprised this was part of the groupon and happy it was because I wanted to try as much as I could. My hubs had a dish that reminded me of fajita meat and peppers. My other friend had a chicken dish. I can't begin to tell you exactly what the dishes were called but I can tell you this, it was wonderful. Such flavors in every bite. American food is so bland compared to this, it's a shame to be honest. There are such wonderful spices and seasonings in this world and we neglect them completely it seems. We loved eating with our hands and getting messy. If you go with friends, go with good friends! And be prepared to take your time. I think we , were there for nearly 3 hours. The restaurant was full and there was only 1 waitress, poor thing. I look forward to eating here again in the future. It was a lot of fun!

Ethiopian food is fun. If you are looking for a great excuse to eat food that your suppose to eat with a fork with your hands, then try some Ethiopian food. In Ethiopian cuisine one uses a flat bread called injera to scoop up the curried, meaty goodness spread over the injera bread. I've only tried this cuisine three times, so not an expert, but I understand the Axum to be one of the better ones. Had some really crispy sambusa that made the vege lentils rock and I really just enjoy the experience of eating something exotic in a very different way. I happen to think the spices are pretty good and it really gives me a craving for the chickens, beef, and lamb. In fact, not sure i like lamb any other way. Service was kind of slow and for lunch it was fairly dead, but the server was very helpful and kind.

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food. Now, with all the rave reviews out there regarding Ethiopian food, perhaps my expectations were a bit too high. The place is cute and quaint. There is a small free parking lot outside. There are two really nice servers that service the entire restaurant....that equates to welcoming patrons, sitting them down, taking orders, making drinks, bringing out food, bussing tables, preparing the check, etc., all by themselves. This must be a cultural thing, because I've only seen this done in African restaurants. Regardless, it boils down to a slower service pace which may not be for you if you are not the patient kind. If you are in party of two, go ahead and prepare at least 1.5 hours for the whole experience. At first, the food was promising. The Sambusa with Vegetables was fantastic. It reminded me of Indian Samosas. Tons of subtle yet interesting flavors. Then the remainder of the food came out. It was a complete let down. The Axum Special Beef Tips were just a stir fry of beef, green peppers, and onions. It was so underwhelming and bland. Sadly, I could have stayed at home and made this myself with my eyes closed. The Kik Alicha was recommended to me as the best vegetarian dish in the house by one of the servers, and unfortunately, it tasted like I was eating a cardboard box. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever. On the up side, my husband says the Ethiopian beer is extremely crisp and clean with no aftertaste. I'm going to give Ethiopian food one more shot....just not Axum.

Delicious! The food here is fantastic. I don't know how often I will make the trek all the way out to East Colfax, but if I do, it will be for some grub at Axum. The beer is great as well. I am used to Ethiopian beer being very heavy and dark. They have several light and some even fruity beers from Ethiopia, here. Yay for off street, free parking! There was no wait on a Tuesday evening, it seemed to get busier around 7pm, but still not full. Because there was only one server, the service was a bit slow and she brought my friend her samosa-type thing with the dip bowl (but without the dip), but overall it was a positive experience.

Let me start with the positives and then the negatives: Positives: the food was pretty delicious! I am always weary to try something new-ish and I enjoyed most of it. My boyfriend ordered the veggie platter and most of it was good. I ordered the fish and rice. The rice was really great with the vegetarian sauce. Our appetizers were good too. Our server was sweet and very friendly. Negative: we got there at 6:30 and it took a full hour and a half to get our dinner. We got a free dessert with our meal and we didn't want to stay for another 45 minutes so we got our bill and left without it. It took over 2 hours for us to get out of there. It seemed like an issue of understaffing and miscommunication in the kitchen. I enjoyed most of what we ordered but I do not think we'll be back because it takes forever--for a Monday night that was ridiculous.

Interesting experience, but one I wouldn't want to experience again. I tried it out due to a LivingSocial purchase...was interested in seeing what Ethiopian food was like...and my fam was nice enough to join me. That was the best part...being with them. We kept ourselves entertained while our first Ethiopian experience of 2+ hours unfolded. Food was interesting, but not really all that great and portions were very small. Service was totally not acceptable since there was only one person taking care of all of the tables. Environment was lacking of everything. So with okay food, minimal environment and very slow service (though I did feel sorry for the single waitress), there really isn't much reason to try it again. Even with the LivingSocial, the cost was more than what I believe it was worth. I am glad I at least was able to try out Ethiopian food. Unfortunately we had to go through a drive through afterwards to get something for one of my sons since he basically did not like anything at Axum. So much for his Ethiopian experience.

Not my first rodeo with Ethiopian food. I was actually excited to go to Abyssinia but they're closed on Tuesdays! So, this was my second choice. The food was good. Just good. But it was FREEZING in there! As soon as I sat down the waitress asked how I was doing and I pointed out that it was cold in there. She excitedly said, "yeah!" So either she didn't understand what I said or I was in the twilight zone. It was 41 degrees outside and maybe 38 degrees inside. My toes were frozen and so were my hands. If you want me to eat with my fingers, turn up the f-ing heat, otherwise give me a fork so I can wear my gloves! The arctic temps made my food cold after 3 bites and I was so uncomfortable I couldn't enjoy my food. I ate as fast as I could so that I could leave. She took away my plate and I waited 10 minutes for my check. She finally asked me if I wanted the check as I sat there shivering...yes please. I settled up and left. Additionally, my injera was served in a dirty unlined wicker basket. It was not sanitary and I could see particles of food (I hope) on the basket after I took the food out. The food/service/ambiance/cleanliness wasn't 'good' enough for me try again. Apparently injera isn't meant to be had on Tuesdays. Now I know.

Really a lot of fun. I loved trying all the different foods. Good atmosphere, not upscale, but fun ethnic decor, not exactly genuine but something you'd pick up at Ross or Pier 1. Still, it was a colorful and bright. Service was, well, hesitant. Like she didn't feel comfortable in her own skin, almost like she was apologizing for being our waitress. We were the ONLY people in there, so service wasn't slow, woo hoo! the spongy bread was great, very different. I really enjoyed the food and would recommend this place to anyone who is up for something different.

My United Nations like quest to sample all the various ethnic cuisines available on Colfax continues with my journey to this delicious late-night Ethiopian joint. We started with some deliciously, surprisingly big sambusas filled to the brim with lentils and served with a sweet and spicy awaze sauce (honey and chili flakes basically). It was probably the best sambusa I had anywhere. We then ordered a combination of various meat and vegetable dishes and they were all good to excellent. I loved the bedero fanta: lamb shank served in a complex berbere sauce with interesting undertones likely from cinnamon or some other pie spices. The server was a bit coy about what exactly they were. The vegetarian wots were also generally good, especially the carrot, cabbage and potato atakalit wot which was simmering in a delicious ginger and tumeric infused sauce. I did however wish the red lentil mesir wot was a bit spicier the way some other restaurants in town serve it. I had a delicious glass of honey wine with dinner. The server told me they actually make their own honey wine and I had just gotten a new batch. I could tell that it tasted a bit fresher and had a more complex flavor than some other places I've tried the wine. The service was efficient though sometimes a bit slow. It took awhile for my friend to get the coffee she ordered, though she told it was great. So if you're ever up late and wanting an ethnic food adventure on East Colfax, head to Axum.

Um, yum Axum! The beef tibs are my favorite thing to eat here. Tibs are the first thing I tried of Ethopian cuisine and these are up there with the best I've had. They are not as spicy as some, but still good. And messy. Which makes them all the better. Axum has recently changed their menu and now includes timatim fit fit (injera torn up and mixed with tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, spices and vinegar). So good. The staff is very friendly and the decor is nicer than many other Ethiopian restaurants have. Remember to have time to sit when you go here. You can't rush something this delicious!

Excellent service...these ladies made a very intimidating experience a fun one. Food was great, prompt, and excellently sized portions. I had tons of questions and the waitress answered them all while me figure out what to order. Also, both waitresses were serving all tables and were always making sure we had what we needed. We got two full meals (with leftovers) and drinks for $25. Hell yeah! Bottom line: nice folks, delicious food, good value, fun times!

I will start out by saying: I ordered take-away here. So, I can't quite speak to the service or the bar, or the decor. But I can speak for the food, and it was yummy. I had the vegetarian combo, which was a ginormous amount of lentils, and spinach, and potatoes, and other veggies in six (very) different sauces. It came with two injera breads, which was more than enough. I got two pretty good sized meals out of it, and all for about $12. The ladies at the counter were lovely, and my food was ready in a snap. I never really thought of Ethiopian cuisine as a take-out kind of cuisine, but actually it works quite nicely!

We decided to check out this place since neither my friend nor I had been there, and we had a coupon from the Entertainment Book. We arrived a smidge early (6pm) to make sure we beat the crowds. I was a little nervous when we pulled up cause no-one had yet to review it on yelp and there were only 2 cars in the parking lot... It got worse... The 2 cars were relatives there to say hi.... So we had the entire place to ourselves. Not a bad thing, but not a great thing either. It is a pretty big place. We got to pick where we wanted to sit - gotta love it! We went with water since they only had Ethiopian wine and beer (we think, the language barrier was a little tough) The menu was a smidge confusing and not what any of us were used to. We went the white people route and did the meat combo (#1), the veggie combo (#18) and then 1 additional plate of spicy meat with peppers. We thought the 2 combos would be enough, but the waitress indicated that it might not be... There were no options for appetizers - better for the waist line, but we sat for a bit waiting for the big plate to be prepared and had only our water glasses (mine was empty and she wasn't very prompt with the refill) and each other to entertain ourselves. The plate come out looking fabulous -and I of course forgot to take a picture - too hungty!! They also deliver a basket of the "bread" which was great! Some places can be a bit stingy with it! We dug in! Very yummy! The "bread" was less dense than I've had previously, so that was a nice feature. The spicy, wasn't The salad in the middle of the plate, though pretty was not as yummy as i have had at other locations. We ate to our hearts content. What we are assuming was the chef - the mom - the head honcho - checked on us mid way through the meal and we indicated we were enjoying out food! The price point is awesome too. For the 3 of us it was only $28 - and with out buy one get one coupon that brought it down to $21 for all of us. Holy guacamole - what a deal! Definitely tasty, but i would have to pick my other fav - Arada over this place.

The food itself was good, but the service was slow and it was a little disconcerting to see young children (presumably relatives of the waitstaff) wandering in and out of the kitchen. We visited with a Restaurant.com certificate and split two combos (one meat; one vegetarian). We enjoyed well-seasoned lentils, split yellow peas, chickpeas, and steamed cabbage among other entrees. We also enjoyed the lamb stew and shredded beef. Again, the food was good, but I wouldn't necessarily visit again.

I remember a time when there was only one Ethiopian restaurant in Denver, no it seems we have wide selection. I've seen this place any number of times but didn't go until a young friend suggested it. There were four of us and we ordered two combination plates for a total of 4 meat and 6 vegetarian dishes. The very friendly server made several suggestions. We got a good mixe of beef, lamb, and chicken and a wide range of vegetables. Everything was, to my taste, excellent. While sometimes service is suppose to be slow we didn't experience that at all. There were only 2 people taking care of the room. It was slow when we arrived at 6:30 but quickly filled up. I didn't see anyone waiting all that long for their meal. I want to take my son back there soon to try some of the more adventurous items my friends didn't want; like Beef Tripe and Tongue cooked with ginger and Lamb Tripe. I love this kind of ethnic food and it's the first time I've seen some of these items on a menu in Denver.

my first experience with ethiopian food. I liked it. started with sambusa and kategna. the sambusa was a delicious, flakey pastry filled with green lentils and spices. very good. the kategna was a simple preparation of injera bread soaked in an herbed butter. it looked pretty sad on the plate but it was very good. a nice heat and the end called for plenty of local beer which was also good. for dinner we shared dero tips, kitfo and fitfit. all were good but we should have had the kitfo cooked a little. I like tartar but this preparation would have been better cooked. my least favorite was the fitfit. it tasted fine but the injera to lamb ratio was unbalanced. I had a baklava for dessert that was unimpressive. i'm sure it was right out of a box from restaurant depot. over all I liked it and i'm looking forward to comparing it to other Ethiopian restaurants.

I love this place. The food is delicious and it doesn't matter how many of us are there, we usually average out at $10 each (not including alcohol). Veggie and meat combos are awesome and the tibs, amazing. Service is always friendly and helpful with menu choices. Just get your butt over there and enjoy!

I love this place!! The pricing is great for a party of 3 and the service is great. We order the meat and veggies combos and it's enough for 3+ people - I have a growing 13 yr old son who is 6' and weighs 190, so it is definitely a ton of food for reasonable pricing.

This was some of the best Ethiopian food I've had in Denver. I am a vegetarian and always get the veggie combo. Amazing! And not overly oily like so many Ethiopian places. The prices are also crazy low for the food. Veggie combo was $10 when I went, for an enormous amount of food. I definitely agree with the other reviewers that the service is ridiculously slow. However, having been to Axum a number of times now, I just expect it and think of it as part of the experience. I would never go here if I needed a quick bite, but if you are going with a friend or a date and want a relaxing experience, this is the place to go. I have tried at least 6 Ethiopian restaurants in Denver, and this is in my top 2 (I can't decide between Axum or Queen of Sheeba - prices are better at Axum, service is much better/faster at Queen of Sheeba, food is excellent at both).

Very good and offers tweaks on the menu other don't. A bit understaffed so it's slower but worth it. A little $ than other, again worth it.

My wife and I went here for dinner a few weekends ago. The staff was very friendly and the beer was excellent, but the food was just average if not a little below. They are very fond of using sponge bread in place of more pricier entree items so do not be surprised if you order a dish and the majority of your plate is full of bread. St. George beer is excellent and is the only reason I would return to Axum.

I really don't know how to rate this place, because the food was absolutely outstanding but the service was some of the worst I've ever had. I'm trying to be forgiving because there are probably some cultural disparities there and our waitress didn't speak much english, but the service was just really not good at all. I went to Axum with a Groupon. Both my friend and I were tired, it was 8:40 or so already so I got whatever was named the strangest and my friend went with the most different. Which ended up being ZilZil Tibs for me and Kitfo for my friend. I had a sambusa before hand which was excellent, and my friend got the Axum salad as well. If you plan on coming here, bring a lot of patience and a lot of time. It took us almost an hour and a half to get through our meal, and we were literally the only people in the place on a Thursday evening, so I can't imagine what it's like on a busy night. While my friend and I were sitting there thirsty, water glasses empty, our waitress was at the bar right in front of us polishing wine glasses. I had to ask. My friend ordered coffee with our entrees and she didn't bother to tell us that they were not in coffee making hours until we mentioned at the end of the meal that it was never brought. I think she might have just forgotten, but it was a nice gesture to come out to us while she was roasting the beans in a skillet and let us smell them. Plus, the coffee presentation is awesome. If the portions weren't so small, and the service so terrible, I'd want to be a regular here. But sadly you don't get much and the wait is just unbearable.

I am not one to usually complain, but this was RIDICULOUS!!! While the food was really good, the service was absolutely horrible. We were seated immediately since we made reservations. We were there for an hour before receiving our food and the waitress brought our main dish. She forgot our appetizers. I asked about our appetizers and she said she forgot and went and got them. She did give us free wine because of the mistake, but we were there another hour by the time we ate and were waiting for the check. We waited 30 minutes for the check and we finally walked out without the check. I left $5 on the table to cover tax. We were there a total of TWO HOURS and did not even receive the check.

I love ethiopian food and purchased a Groupon to try out Axum. It was great! It was very vegetarian friendly and my girlfriend and I tried out every vegetarian dish on the menu. Several were standouts, one or two were great, and one or two were average. It was a nice little spot and our server was fantastic. I will be going back. Recommended!

The food has gotten much more consistent the past four times I've been and they seem to have more customers; the service has improved immensely, so I'm giving them four stars. Like all Ethiopian, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Get the sambussas or azifa if you're really hungry! The azifa is ridiculously full of horseradish and it really clears your sinuses. I always get the vegetarian combination, but instead of gomen I make sure to order the shiro. So good, especially here. The yebeg alicha is also really great if you eat meat.

As a veteran Ethiopian food enthusiast I can honestly say this place is very good. The waitress showed some of the best customer service I have seen in all Denver restaurants. She was also very knowledgable about the food as she is originally from Addis Ababa. If the GroupOn is still available for this restaurant I highly recommend it. Most bang for your buck out of any GroupOn I have ever used. For vegetarians I recommend the Misir Wot and for meat eaters go with the Doro Wot or Tibs. I took off one star because I am a snob when it comes to Ethiopian food and I must admit that I have had better in Washington DC (my hometown) and because of the weird decor and ambiance. I will, however, recommend this place to people who are interested in getting acquainted with Ethiopian cuisine.

Great food, family friendly and great service. Every time we go in there are always children and families dining at this place. It's warm and welcoming. They roast their own coffee beans. I always ask them to put a plate/combo together for us. Never disappointed.

Unbelievably long wait.. Now I don't mean 20 minutes before you get seated.. I mean 30 minutes before water is poured, 45 minutes before your beer arrives, and 2 hours before you finally give up on those appetizers and entrees and call it a night. We found out during our wait that Axum was short staffed on the evening of our visit (all but one girl had called out, I think that girl was seating, cooking and serving by herself). It would help to let your patrons know before they sit down that they can expect a long wait, rather than just keep seating far too many tables for one person to handle.

Ok, so I saw the disco ball in action... Late night, this place turns into a dance club for the local Ethiopian community. Walking back to me house with a group of friends, we were waved in as we passed. The people inside could not have been more inviting and friendly. They taught us traditional Ethiopian style disco moves - namely how to shake the shoulders while keeping your head still. Sweet move. It ranks #2 on my favorites now, just below river dancing.

This is my favorite restaurant in Denver. I love their late hours and the price for the amount of food you get is unreal. I get the vegetarian combo every time and I am never disappointed. The servers are always very sweet and the atmosphere is laid back. I feel like it is one of my best kept secret restaurants in Denver but I had to share the love via Yelp because it is seriously that good.

Not sure if the people on here giving this place 4 or 5 stars either had a much better experience than we did tonight or they just haven't ever been to an ethiopian restaurant before. Went here on a Groupon deal tonight. It seemed like a good deal for $20 for 2 apps, 2 entrees and desert. Upon sitting down, we waited over 1 hour before our first appetizers came. They were cold appetizers that didn't require any cooking, just scooping into a bowl. Then one of them wasn't what we ordered. In Axum's fairness, they did comp that app and bring the correct one. Funny after taking an hour for the first two appetizers to arrive, the corrected app was on our table in less than a minute. The appetizers all had a ton of injera bread in them and were nothing to get excited about. Might have been a little better had I had some water in my cup to wash them down. I know, I had a Groupon and I'm drinking water. It wasn't trying to be cheap, I just couldn't stand the thought of alcohol after a new years eve tear. Regardless, I expect my water to be refilled when empty. Then we got the meat and veggie combos. A few of the veggies were pretty good, a few were ok and a few pretty bad. On the meat side, the chicken is usually falling off the bone at an Ethiopian restaurants but was tough, the lamb ok and the beef my favorite. The beef tar tar wasn't bad, but I'm second guessing my decision to eat it considering I made two trips to the bathroom during this meal due to my stomach being pissed at me. My dinner date also ended up with stomach problems tonight. The part that I'm completely confused on is that this place was busy tonight which was probably part of why the service was so terrible, but why the normal place I go was completely dead on my way home is beyond me. Stick with the other Ethiopian restaurants that get 4-4.5 stars on Yelp. They have a higher rating for a reason!

We arrived at Axum unprepared, as my girlfriend and I had purchased a coupon on restaurant.com but did not have access to a printer. We asked if the wait staff would be so accommodating as to simply take down the number from the coupon, as I had the coupon open on my iPhone, and they firmly declined. We proceeded to order and were greeted by extremely small portions after ordering both the vegetable and meat combos. In all, the food was delicious, but the small portions and the unwavering waitstaff equate to my choosing to patronize the myriad other Ethiopian options on Colfax alone, especially Queen of Sheba, which has presented itself as the superior dining experience to Axum. We later went back to take advantage of our still pending coupon, and received a much better dining experience after being served by a woman who appeared to be the owner. The portions were of reasonable size and the food was good. I do have a sinking suspicion that we were given special treatment because of being discovered as yelpers. Again, with so many other choices for Ethiopian on Colfax, the restaurant.com coupon would be the biggest motivator to choose Axum again.

This was my first time having Ethiopian food. We had wonderful service, but there was only one other couple dining at the same time. The server answered all of my questions and helped point me in the direction of some less spicy menu items. I thought the food was great. and also a great value. You get a ton of food for your money. There's nothing really special about the atmosphere, but I didn't mind. If I"m in the mood for Ethiopian again, I'll be sure to go back.

I'm a regular here. The doro wot is delicious but can be a hit or a so-so depending on how long the chicken has had to stew. The misir wot is a chunky bean stew guy which is a very similar flavor to the doro wot, but super good nonetheless. the star of the party has to be the SHIRO (chickpea? some kind of ground up bean) which we discovered here in the veggie combo. YUM. Try it. its very mild but super flavorful. GO SHIRO!

I have frequented Axum over a half a dozen times the past couple of years. The service is always prompt, friendly, consistent and the food fabulous! I think I have probably tried at least 80% of what is on their menu and time after time it's excellent! I highly recommend Axum for your Ethiopian experience.

Went Saturday night due to a Groupon we had. Food was absolutely fantastic! Try the Ethiopian beers, really different and good. As with other ethnic places, the food is usually great, but they have no clue how to provide customer service and the decor is just hideous. If you go, don't be in a hurry and have tons of patience. It's worth it. Better yet, order take out.

Yes, the food tastes good. But this was one of the worst service experiences I've had. There was no attempt made to create atmosphere, until they turned some music on half an hour into our time. And, as other reviewers have said, the servers just didn't seem to care. We ordered appetizers and entrees, and neither came until more than 45 minutes had passed. There was only one other table of people there. And no apologies were made. It was very bizarre. I was embarrassed to have brought our out-of-town guest there. I wonder how they stay in business given the other good Ethiopian options.

Odd, but good...I think. You wouldn't come here for the ambiance, unless it's still the 80's and you like to lounge on black lacquered furniture and watch a 200 inch TV (okay, not that big, but it looks huge balancing on top of one of those fake fireplaces) while a disco ball spins between the fly-fisherman themed lights above. Everyone else in the place was obviously a regular, but our waitress was nice and accommodating, though she spoke no English. No big deal, we used lots of pointing and hand gestures and we are at least 75% sure we got what we ordered. Not as spicy as other dishes I've tried, but definitely a more diverse menu. I also agree with the other reviewers in that it's not as greasy as some of the more typical Ethiopian dishes I've tried, which is always nice. A nice place to check out when all the other Ethiopian restaurants on Colfax seem to be closed on a Friday night (as was the case with us).

I do think this is the best Ethiopian food I have had in Denver and I am always surprised at my bill and how cheap it is. I am always overly full when I leave. I suggest to get an appetizer before your meal. Getting food does take a while but it is worth the wait. The servers are friendly and sweet. If you have never had Ethiopian food before and are overwhelmed by the menu, just get the meat and veggie combo.

I am a huge fan of Ethiopian food and this was my first experience since moving to Denver... and I was pleasantly surprised. One does not go to Axum for the ambiance, but the food is great. The food was less greasy than many Ethiopian places I have tried. We had two vegetarian entrees (each less than 9 dollars) and there was lots of food and it was great. Also the Ethiopian tea is a must try item on the menu!!

We went to Axum on a Sunday evening with some friends and all absolutely loved it. You wouldn't know it from looking outside..it seems kind of run down, but it is much better on the inside. We had a Groupon and were able to get 4 appetizers: Sambusa with Veggies, Timatim FitFit, and Kategna (x2). I have only had Ethiopian food a few times from a friend who makes it from scratch, and I thought everything was delicious! For entrees, we had Axum Special Tips (lamb from a sizzling pan!!) ZilZil Tibs (beef from a sizzling pan!) and Doro Wot - traditional drumstick and boiled egg with seasonings. The Doro Wot was a little bit spicy (and I'm a whimp) but still very delicious. They serve everything on a giant piece of injera along with some house salad on the injera too. They brought out a ton more injera for us to use throughout our meal and we were able to take home like 4 extra smaller rolls of it. We had cheesecake and Baklava for dessert. The Baklava had a gingery taste but was nice and crunchy/flaky and the cheesecake was creamy. Everything tasted very fresh. I especially liked the ZilZil Tibs because I felt that they were really flavorful. They have a large menu with a great deal of selection, and even with a glossary at the back so you can look up spices if you are unfamiliar with them. Our server was polite and extremely accommodating during our entire visit. We had a misunderstanding about an entree and she brought out another one for no extra charge. I felt that the service was some of the best that I have ever had and I am surprised at the ratings related to customer service. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. I will definitely go back again.

I have NO idea why this place only has two stars! Had lunch there today and I basically shoved all of the food in the entire world into my face. The service is a bit on the slow side but I've experienced that at most Ethiopian places I have been. We got the veggie combo and chicken stew for the two of us. SO MUCH FOOD. And all of it was absolutely fantastic, seriously, not a dud on the plate. I wish I could say that we ate every bite but there was absolutely no way that was happening. The food at Axum is less greasy than a lot of Ethiopian I have had before which is a HUGE plus in my book and I will ask them to make it a bit more spicy next time, but there will absolutely be a next time. I mean, it was way too early in the day to get the honey wine this time! Oh, like Nicole we basically had the entire place to ourselves aside from a table that was finishing as we got there and some patrons at the bar.

Got takeout from this place on Sunday. Staff was very friendly and helpful and made sure my order was right (even opened up a few containers to show me all was there!) before I left. We used a google offer ($40 for $20) and got several vegetarian specials. The variety of lentil, bean and typical veggie dishes were well-seasoned and well-spiced in addition to tasting healthy and fresh. The injera was deliciously tangy and soft. Will be back!

Axum Restaurant is Ethiopian food made to order, IN A CROCK POT!!!!!!!!!! My experience here was one of the most excruciating meals I've ever had in Denver. We came into the place ready to spend a little more time than the usual due to many reviews saying the service was slow at best. The GF and a couple of our friends tried Axum on a Saturday night, probably our first mistake. The place was pretty packed and they had only two waitresses on. Not a good sign, I mean come on you pay a waitress minimum wage with no benefits, how hard is it to have an extra come in and cut them if not that busy? We ordered after about fifteen minutes, because that's when the waitress finally came over to our table. Got our beers and empty water glass another fifteen minutes later. After an hour and three other tables getting food before us, we had to ask what the deal was. When we did finally get our two combinations, which I would say would maybe have fed the four of us, everything was cold. None too pleased. I hope this was a fluke deal, but I won't be returning to find out. Maybe the key is to go sit at the bar and order, as two guys came in and ate and had a drink in a matter of about twenty minutes while we hungrily waited for ours. I will say that most of the dished I tried were quite tasty.

Delicious Ethiopian fare and super friendly service! Not only was the food tasty, but the server was more than happy to bring more bread to soak up every last bit of goodness, which was great considering some places are tight on the extras. The interior looks like a 1970's rec room, and there's no choice for appetizers, but other than that, this place is top notch Ethiopian. The prices are also way reasonable. I got the veggie combo plate for a whopping $7.99 and it was piled with food! If you like food from this part of the world, be sure to check it out :)

My friend and I are both big fans of Ethiopian food and we think we have a new favorite. The food was really good, the service was very attentive, and they gave us free delicious coffee after our meal. I don't think they normally do that, but it was kinda empty when we were there. I just thought it was a really nice touch. It is very reasonably priced and they take cards (which not all Denver Ethiopian places do). They have heavy drapes that make it look closed from the street but everyone inside was very welcoming. I will certainly be back soon.

I LOVE this place, not only because of the uniqueness and quality of food, but because the waitstaff is gracious and friendly and efficient. A "shout out" to Meaza, my favorite Axum waitress! She held down the fort last night all by herself and it was really busy for a Tuesday. She did an excellent job, all with a HUGE SMILE! I recommend trying the combination plates, if you haven't dined here before, to get a sampling of their staple dishes. Everything is colorful and fresh and filling. If you are a coffee drinker, try their Ethiopian coffee....they come out with the beans roasting and it is a smell that will make even a non-coffee drinker want some!! Oh, and you get a bowl of super-fresh-just-popped-popcorn with your coffee! I would recommend Axum for parties and for couples, but be aware that it can get a bit loud if the house is full. They have published several Groupons so, take advantage of the great deal!! You won't be disappointed!

I went here last summer with a good friend. It was a little later(around 9:30) and we wanted to try something different. We got seated right away and ordered sodas. It took 20 minutes for them to bring 2 cans of soda costing $2 each in an empty restaurant. I tried asking if the food was halal. Considering most Ethiopians are Muslim, I assumed they would at least know what the word meant and could answer the question. They had no idea what I was talking about and tried to tell me what meat was. I decided to play it safe and order fish. We waited for an hour and a half with the waiter nowhere in site, dry glasses(not that I'd pay $2 for another can of soda), and our ears getting blown out from the music. We finally saw the waiter and told him we'd like to cancel our order. We needed to get home, and we were so hungry we would rather go to a fast food place to get something. The guy then told us he needed to ask first. I just tossed down the cash for the drinks. As we were headed towards the door, a woman came out from the back and started shouting at us for canceling the order. I tried explaining that an hour and a half was way too long to wait for food at a restaurant, especially since we were the only people there. The woman wouldn't listen at all and continued shouting at us. We finally just walked out. I would never go to this place again. For customer service this horrible, they better have the best food I've ever tasted...
