I love the scones here! The peach especially - so tasty. They also have some interesting, healthier bars with millet and agave and wheat-free things, too. The little outdoor patio area is lovely, especially as the interior is usually pretty crowded, especially on weekends. The baked goods are top notch here, though. Cookies, cinnamon rolls, sandwiches....a lot of options.

Fair warning: After you have a scone at Spruce Confections, nothing will ever come close to as good. The shop is small, but it does have wifi and amazingly good coffee as well. Not only did I get a scone for breakfast, I bought a pecan bar to share with my friend later. And by share, I mean give him a bite and then proceed to eat the rest of the bar because I entered a level of bliss never before brought on by a dessert bar of any form. As far as the store front goes, I probably wouldn't chose it as tops for a place to sit and work for a while. It's better for stopping in to grab a delicious cuppa to go and a baked good so delicious that your eyes will roll back into your head.

Don't fool yourself and come here thinking that you'll just have a cup of coffee. There is no way to avoid the incredible sweets that they offer. The selection is always incredible but the tried and true are the ones that I look for. My favorite is the gigantic Old B cookie!

My favorite bakery of all time! The cheddar scone is to die for - you have to get there early though... They run out of the good stuff by mid-morning. Plus they have an awesome selection of teas.

What a great neighborhood spot. I love coming here with the kids on weekends, grabbing a coffee, reading some books, and getting to say hello to our friends and neighbors! Plus the pastries are tasty and the prices are reasonable. Nom!

Simply put: Disgusting. I wrote a fairly positive review a while back and now came back yesterday for a coffee and something to eat. The sandwiches have not become much better but that's not the bad part. There are FLIES and BUGS everywhere. I can understand that their baking perhaps atracts more bugs. But they have nothing in place to mitigate that issue. The floor is dirty and the bugs are all over. My friend and I tried to check out some websites and connect to their WiFi but were told that it hasn't been working for a while... really? I can understand a few days, stuff breaks. But a few days and with the attitude of "well you bought your stuff, you can sit down somewhere else with your gadgets" I find myself in the position of hating this place now and letting everyone on Facebook know too that they are better off to go to Amante nearby. Don't waste your money or time on these people.

These guys have some of the best pastries I have ever had the delicious vegan Z-bar is one of my favorites and they also have a wonderful seating area for you your love of your life and your pup

Great coffee, prices, atmosphere, and seating. I didn't have any pastries myself, but the dog LOVED his homemade dog biscuit. Yes, dogs aren't the pickiest eaters (I'm not going to name here some of the things they are known to eat), but seriously, that thing looked so good, I was tempted to take a bite. (I didn't).

How much you love Spruce depends more or less wholly on whether you're a regular. If you are, you know they exist on French time. They are laid back, they are not in a hurry, and if you happen to be in a hurry, they're very sorry for you, but you came to the wrong place. You can hang out, shmooze with the five people you know who will be there, and wait for your delicious scone and chai. I personally love them. Their laid-backness extends to several privileges that most establishments wouldn't be okay with - for example, we work next door, and they're completely fine with us filling our water bottles at the big jug even if we don't purchase anything that particular trip, because they know we give them money regularly and what are friends for? Ditto for stealing a spoon now and then - and who has not had occasion to steal a spoon? As for the scones, this is how good they are: when I took a trip to New York to visit a friend who grew up here in Boulder, she told me that if I did not bring with me a bag full of scones from Spruce, she would leave me to fend for sleeping space among the homeless on the streets of Brooklyn. My friend is ruthless, but wise in the ways of scones.

Spruce is great! Love the bakery, love the coffee, love that the barista was wearing an Antigua tee today! Lucky for me, the Uptown SPruce is right next door to my office in North Boulder. (The cyclist atmosphere is great! Love the little patio to enjoy a fresh croissant or quiche and a cappuccino). If they are enviro friendly, fair trade, etc, I haven't discovered this yet... but I will, for your sake, yelp friends.

The coffee and cookies were unimpressive. However, the pastries were very good and the quiche was excellent.

Hmmm...I thought I had already reviewed Spruce Confections. I do stop in often. What I actually like most here is their soup. Their carrot ginger soup is so excellent! What I've noticed here that makes it more of a challenge to continue being a customer here is the apparent inconsistency due to either a high turnover of employees or at the very least, different people staffing the counter every single time I come in. The ladies who were here a few days ago were just so rude, it was difficult to complete a simple business transaction with them. They charged different prices for the very same items I had purchased the previous week, and the actual prices had not changed. I won't even go into it...it was just so puzzling. People were being pleasant with them, and they were specifically seeming to go out of their way to be as rude as possible. There is a guy who works there who is nice. He charges the correct prices for things. There's no denying that their bakery items are good. And their patio is lovely. And their brownie/raspberry frosted cupcakes are beyond heavenly. So I will probably end up returning, but with great trepidation.

Spruce Confections is a lovely little bakery/ European eatery. They have a nice selection of coffees and teas as well as baked goods to satisfy a range of diet types. They sell a delicious vegan lemon poppy-seed bread as well as a number of vegan and veg friendly soups. Because I am a cupcake girl, I can speak from experience when I say their's are a cut above. The cupcakes are large, but they frosting is light so it isn't an overwhelming amount of sugar. They also have really good frosting flavors like raspberry. I have only been to the Pearl St. store, so I will warn that it isn't in an entirely accessible or convenient location. Parking is not always readily available and anything that's close requires payment. The store itself is also small, so depending on the time, seating may be impossible. They have a large patio, but that also tends to fill up.

get the black-bottom cupcake if they're not sold out for the day already. it goes perfectly with the truffle mocha. the first time i was here, they made it all pretty -- like a swirly leaf thing. but the next time i went, it was just a regular latte. still good though!

The really good thing about this place is the most delicious pastries, cakes, cupcakes, muffins etc... yum all of the above keeps me going back even if the service is way below average. I've been to the location on West End Pearl and North Boulder, and in both of them often the staff seems overwhelmed by the crowd during rush hours. However if you happen to stop by not during rush hours, the staff seems quite at ease and overly engaged in conversation either with each other or with the one client that is sharing a complicated story so that the staff does not bother to make eye contact with the next person in line. The incompetent staff makes it really hard to get my pastries.....ugh!

Pastries to die for. Coffee is excellent as well. Free music Friday mornings. A bit small.Staff seems friendly to me.

I love going to this place after a run or heading out to work for the day. They have decent prices for an independent coffee shop, smaller sizes (I like not having a choice of Starbucks big or Starbucks bigger), awesome scones and quiches, and even better granola. They have a really good Bhakti Chai that kicks your ass, or a slightly sweeter (but still spicy) regular chai. This is my favorite place go in Boulder for a quick morning bite or drink.

    (5)
  • Jordan A.

Apparently, there is more than one around Boulder. This one has the cutest little flower-covered patio I've ever seen. The deserts are insane, and the coffee is good. My dogs like it too. I like going to Proto's across the street for my Low Rider pizza, and then getting coffee at Spruce Confections. Always makes for a great meal.

    (5)
  • Margaret J.

As other reviewers have noted, it's worth a trip just for the cupcakes alone; I'd especially recommend anything with raspberry buttercream. I'm also particularly fond of their pre-made sandwiches and have never had, nor probably ever will have, a better hummus and portobello sandwich.

The Good - I like this North Boulder Spruce cause it's close to my house. And they make excellent sweets. The Bad - I don't like it when I get there 6:05 after work and they're closed. At least I can get *high* from the aroma of their ovens baking - have you ever experienced the rich smells that emanate from a bakery's vents?? More Bad - I just Googled for 5 minutes (yeah) and can't believe it appears they don't have a website??? I know they're pretty well established, supplying sweets and other baked goods at least as far as Denver, but come-on, this is 2008 and no website? Arent' we (Boulder) kinda hi-tech town? kinda, maybe?? Anyways, I was just trying to confirm they close at 6pm every night, which REALLY doesn't work for me. So everything is freshly made here - scones, muffins, cookies, quiche and more. Decent lattes, ok sandwiches and other lunch items (small selection and quantity). Never seems crowded and outdoor patio is nice, but people watching here on N. Bway and Yellow Pine is sadly just a one-star. That's if you even give a star to watching crunchy Boulderites coming out of their Subarus, or the occasional trophy-wife/soccor mom climbing of of their Cayenne Turbo... And they finally got wifi a while back. Also serving their own gelato now (but again, alas, no late hours). So I DO like this joint, but sometimes just wish it had a little more of the energy (relatively speaking) of other Boulder cafes.

  • Ali M.

Maple Blueberry scone is orgasmic. Worth four stars all by itself, or maybe five. Spruce confections also has the best tasting coffee in North Boulder, and great soups for lunch. Most of the treats here are amazing- flaky croissants, buttery cookies, Bhakti Chai....yum. I wish they offered a few more "fresh food" options like salads, etc so it could be more of a lunch spot that just an indulgence spot.

This is a great little spot to grab a quick cup of coffee, a morning quiche or an awesome dessert. The staff is always super friendly, too. I recently stopped by to pick up a dessert to bring home and the staff recommended some pecan pie bar type item. They were spot on! Make sure to pick up two.
