It's not unusual for a restaurant to extend its menu. What's unusual is when one restaurant becomes two, which is what has effectively happened with Gurkhas in Gunbarrel. Already established as reliable source for good Nepalese and Indian fare, Gurkhas has added what they call Brunch, which is a radical departure from the usual menu. Featuring various egg dishes, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, soups, salads, a kids' menus and "other stuff," it's virtually a restaurant within a restaurant. Being a regular visitor to their lunch buffet, I was curious enough to try a couple of the dishes from this new Brunch menu: the pesto omelette and the steak tacos. I have to admit that I hadn't encountered a pesto omelette before, but it sounded promising. Gurkhas' take on it features red onions, sautéed mushrooms, pesto of course, spinach, red pepper and oozy mozzarella. It's like a pizza wrapped in fluffy egg. (If they don't put a bit of their spicy red sauce they call salsa, plate side I'd request it.) It was more than a meal, very tasty and I'll have it again. (Why haven't I thought of this combo sooner?) My second trip for their Brunch was to try the steak tacos. I was overwhelmed by the full plate of four fully-loaded piles of goodness. Probably enough for two normal humans, I couldn't help myself and slowly devoured the entire dish. I'll be having these again too. All in all, for the maiden voyage of a brave departure from their proven norm - which remains fully available - Gurkhas is to be applauded for this bold move.

This is the best Indian food I have had in a long while, especially since moving to Colorado. The chef came to our table personally to greet us, gave a free appetizer, and the food was truly amazing, in taste and presentation. An added treat were the chocolate samosas... truly creative and I totally indulged myself. Extremely happy with the experience that we had. Creative, perfectly spiced, truly great food....

I went recently for the lunch buffet and was very unimpressed with the food at this restaurant. Hardly any of the dishes were palatable and the paltry buffet was stocked with tasteless, thin renditions of American favorites (chicken tikka masala, chana masala, palak paneer). For a table of two we were given half of a whole naan to share; which was not replenished. Please don't take this food to be worth the $12 I paid for the buffet!

Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 3/5 Decor & Style: 2/5 Buffet here is VERY good! I was pretty sick that day but classmates went out so I went with them and with no taste buds, the food here definitely was very tasty! I probably would like it more if I wasn't sick. The selection is small compared to other's i've been to but the great taste makes up for it. My server/cashier was hilarious. He was talking about how hungover he was from Halloween and the one day he was hungover it got busy. He was honest but his service was great, nonetheless. The place does not look too great and it is only semi-clean. Bathroom was a little on the 'ehh' side. I'd come back if I was on that side of Boulder, CO someday!

Boo - we have continued to order several times a month. Last night we ordered and the staff member who usually takes our order answered the phone and recognized me, jokingly saying, "Let me guess your order!" He did know my order, which always includes Chana Masala. He, however, failed to tell me that they had changed their chickpea supply and/or cooking procedure. When I received my chana masala I took three bites and realized that absolutely none of the chickpeas were cooked thoroughly. I know this is a first world problem, but they were crunchy. So I called and instead of immediately offering to make it right they had me chat with him, and two other people, including the chef, to try and convince me what I had was ok. As a paying customer and one that has ben loyally ordering for years, I didn't appreciate that I called to nicely report an issue and the response was somehow to try and convince me I was wrong. They finally agreed to send me another order and to make sure the chickpeas were cooked through. However, they made that order in a rush and didn't spice it as chana masala should be spiced. It was a lot of cumin taste and no ginger taste. Basically, they twice sent me chana that wasn't right. I had a turkey sandwich for dinner So, sadly, after many years, I think we're done with Gurkhas. Siiiiiiiigghh.

The food is simply amazing. Best Indian food I've had in Boulder. Server was the bomb and hooked me and the family up even let us in before they were even supposed to be open. Definitely going back!

Manny is the man! This place exceeded expectations and then some. The service was awesome, food was amazing, and the whole experience really wowed our group. We wandered in after visiting Avery brewery, so we're hungry! The vegetable korma, veggie coconut curry, and tofu dorma (spinach) were to die, perfectly spiced. Definitely worthy of a second visit when we're in the area again (we live in Arvada).

Absolutely fantastic food and service! The head chef, Manny, is very accommodating and talented. I had the coconut curry with shrimp and garlic naan - very tasty. The only thing I regret is having a total brain fart when calculating the tip and giving about half the amount I meant to... Y por eso lo siento mucho mi amigo Manny!

Pros Great atmosphere created by colorful décor and many smaller dining areas. We had a decorative fireplace next to our table to keep us cozy. Desserts were on point: rice pudding, carrot pudding, panna cotta, lemon bars, and chocolate cake. All delectable. An unprecedented 3 homemade soups were offered - great winter touch to the buffet. Giant pan of tandoori chicken. This was the main protein offering on the buffet and there was plenty. Traditional salad dressings like ranch to make a real tasty salad, a good standby for picky eaters. Cons Some food pans were cold. They were experiencing difficulties with their chaffing system. $11.39 with tax makes this buffet more expensive than Jaipur. There was a lack of meat in the dishes on the buffet. No classic chicken curry or pork vindaloo. Good news if you're vegetarian. No brown rice.

Great food. I was a little unsure of ordering due to past instances with Indian food but I decided to overlook them and give this place a try. The only issue I found was that their online ordering system isn't working. Which they tell you to call and confirm your order anyway so he took my order when I called. I had the Mango Lassi (creamy, sweet, and a little tart), the Lamb Tikki Saag (lamb was spiced great and the spinach sauce was delicious), the Butter Naan bread (warm, soft, and just nice), and the Gulab Jamun (very sweet, light on the tongue, and subtle flavor). I definitely will be ordering from them again. Not to mention they were here on the minute that they said the order would be delivered.

Already very good, lately this restaurant had been getting even better. I highly recommend the chicken tikka, vindaloo, saag, samosas, and garlic naan.

I was walking by and nothing was open, I stumbled upon this place and I'm glad I did. It truly surprised by the quality and the service. Every dish I had was immaculately prepared and the taste was second to none. Definitely a diamond in the rough. It's one of the few times I've finished a meal far in excess and still wanted more, I'm not sure what the put in the food but it's definitely addictive. I'll definitely be back here as soon as possible.

Excellent. Both the friendly, warm wait staff and the food are outstanding. Flavorful and plentiful, our dinners were superb. I highly recommend this restaurant. I will definitely revisit here on future trips to Boulder.

I wandered in shortly after the facelift they gave the place, and I have to say that the change was more than just cosmetic. The quality of the food, the cleanliness of the buffet bar, and the amazing diversity of menu items has really gone around the corner. The Tikka Marsala is straight-up delicious, the chai is wonderful, and the service - both at lunch and at dinner - are top flight, personal and personable. Whenever I'm out in the Gunbarrel area, this is the place I'll go.

So stoked to have found this place! Chef Manny is the heart and soul of Gurkha. He is extremely proud of his food and his restaurant (for good reason) and goes to great lengths to make you feel comfortable. Viva la Gurkha!

It saddens me to downgrade Gurkhas in Gunbarrel. For several years (2006-2012) Gurkhas was consistently the best nepalese food I've ever had (esp. the saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, and daal soup). And while the service was consistently slow, the servers were usually nice. Over the past two years, things have gone downhill. The original owners moved to the Baseline location, and now the service has become unprofessional in addition to slow. Just a couple service examples: 1) Last time we were there, we waited to pay our bill while the cashier was chatting with somebody. I told him we were ready to leave, and he said "yes, I know" and then went on talking. 2) Two times ago it took an hour to get our food, and then we waited 30 minutes to get our bill, and the server made several jokes about how marijuana was now legal and invited one of us to go out back and smoke with him. Yes, now I know what you are doing while we are waiting for our food. To make matters worse, the taste and quality of the food isn't as good anymore. The daal soup doesn't have the perfect balance of garlic, spice, lentil and cilantro anymore -- the cilantro is overpowering. The chicken tikka masala is too creamy and doesn't have enough other flavors. I gave it about 4 attempts, and now I've given up. Just go to the Baseline location (or to Gurkhas on the Hill).

One of the best Nepali/Indian in the Boulder area. The lunch buffet are great and affordable. A must go. The only downside is the location.

I was served an seated the moment I walked in the door. My young waiter was very sweet and showed me the buffet table and explained what was in it, since I was knew to this type of food. He checked on me several times, really good service. The food was pretty good, only a couple pieces I got was a tad spicy but good. The salad dressing I chose looked interesting but didn't really care for it, so I'll just have to try a different one during my next trip. I will wear a sweater on my next trip I was kinda cold, but cold by nature. Buy everyone else seemed to not be cold. Lol. I will be back.

This is by far my favorite Indian restaurant. They're lunch buffet is a decent size & has the most popular dishes you'd want. They make an amazing okra dish. I'm glad that they deliver too.

Oh man, am I disappointed. I used to live right by this place, and came here all the time back in '09-'10. Their chicken tikka masala used to be off the charts, naan was always fluffy, great, authentic food all around. I used to live in Pakistan, so I will admit, I am quite picky when it comes to Indian food, and I loved this place. They have changed everything, and they are obviously trying to save money wherever they can. Firstly, tables no longer get free popadom to nibble on while they wait for food. They have substituted regular white rice instead of basmati rice (a huge offense to me - basmati is half of the dish!!) their chicken tikka masala was very plain, and it was obvious that the chicken had not been marinated in yogurt, as is traditional. So, the chicken had no flavor. I am severely disappointed, and unfortunately have left my dinner with a stomach ache. Whether that is psychologically caused by my sadness of their old recipes being lost, I will never know.

EXCELLENT food. Terrible delivery. Do not order delivery. The first time they got our order slightly wrong - not a huge deal. The second time was during a really bad snowstorm after a harrowing drive home. Ordered delivery. They took the order, the called over an hour later asking why we hadn't picked it up. My husband gamely picked it up. No discount no nothing. Would have had a coupon if delivery had happened like requested when ordered. Again - food is great. Service is not good.

Food is decent for a Nepali/ Indian Buffett, however I just had the disturbing experience of watching the manager direct and employee to do something then get in a shouting match with the employee telling the employee to shut the f..up. Then the manager threatened the employee and said "I will f..ing kill you!" Very uncomfortable and bad for business ....don't really want to come back here!

Online prices are lower than what they charge. At least that's true for October 2014. Undercooked onions in the chili shrimp. Saag paneer quite bland. I keep trying this place, but it always disappoints.

A cheerful group of Yelp people were treated to lunch at Gurkhas Restaurant today by the Boulder College of Massage Therapy as part of our wonderful tour. We all ordered the lunch buffet. If you know me you realize this is not the first, nor will it be the last Indian lunch buffet that I experience & review. I like this restaurant. It was my second time here, today. The buffet has improved very much since my first time here, which was months ago. I loved the Dal (Indian lentil soup), all of the Chutneys, the Papadams, and especially the Saag Paneer (spinach in cream sauce with Indian cheese cubes). The cold chai was refreshing too. The atmosphere is pleasant. The restaurant staff took a laissez-faire approach and left us to have our conversation without much intervention, which seemed to work out well. We had a late lunch and most of the lunch crowd had already left, but I imagine the techies who work at the multitudes of techie type places in Gunbarrel really enjoy this place. I would definitely return to Gurkhas. The mix of anise seeds and other neat stuff that are in a bowl near the exit of most Indian restaurants were offered here too, and I grabbed a little bit on the way out. Nice end to a perfect meal!

  • Cannon H.

I'm going to commit a sin. I'm going to rate this place based solely on their buffet. I know what you're thinking, and you're right. You can't do that Cannon! Buffet food is always worse than the real thing. It's like movie sequels (or prequels). Nevertheless, I am going to go ahead and give it a big fat yuck. Normally I can find something I like on a buffet. This time I struggled just to get full. The service was terrible, the price was horrid. Even their naan sucked. How do you screw up naan? Grocery stores don't screw up naan.

  • Marisa M.

Here's the thing- based on service, they get a 3. Based on food, a strong 5. So, average st out and what do you get?? That's right, 3. If you can handle some insanely slow service (we're talking a turtle trudging through molasses), then definitely go here for the amazing food. I am madly in love with the coconut curry to the point where I'm ready to write an ode in its honor. The servers were friendly, but I reiterate once again that I sat there for about an hour and a half and was the only one in there. That's a bit sad.

Based entirely on LUNCH BUFFET. Saturday : Dec 26th 2009. We arrived there sometime around 12:30hrs. Limited range of food at the Buffet spread station. From what I saw on the Buffet, ate and tasted, the spread were : * Vegetable Samosa * Vegetable Pakora * Tandoori Chicken * Chicken Curry * Rice * Saag Paneer * Some vegetable dishes of some kind including Okra. * Vegetarian Noodles of some kind I did not even touch the dessert spread at all coz it looks "so sad". The waitstaff, gave us a couple of Naan in a small basket. Beverage: I opt for Mango Lassi and Hubs order Coffee. The food is mediocre at best. We are not impressed at all. I so wish I could return perhaps to try the main menu but I need to convince Hubs. Above anything else, we are indeed disappointed.

I didn't expect much when we walked into Gurkhas because we were the *only* couple in the entire restaurant. Everything looked clean and we were seated immediately, but empty places freak me out. H started ordering extra for leftovers and all I could think in my standard paranoid way was, "Is this a good idea? Nobody is here.. I wonder how frequently they turnover their produce..." I had no reason to fear. The food did take a little longer than most restaurants but the food was well worth the wait. Everything we ordered (Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Jalfreezi, and Bhindi Masala) had great flavor and freshness. For the price, the portions were also massive, and I was pleasantly surprised by how many leftovers we had. The best part of this place is that when they say spicy, they mean spicy. We've been to several places in the area and have ordered "hot" only to be treated to a mild flaming in the mouth. Gurkhas' spicy was pretty dang hot, and although my mouth was on fire, I couldn't stop eating. We've been to all the places in Boulder and this is one of the best, by far.

I don't know how this place is still in business! The atmosphere is terrible (broken light bulbs, cold and dirty bathrooms, poorly maintained dining room, dirty windows, broken window shades, etc.) The service sucks, big time! Every time I've gone, the service has been very poor. You'd think they could remedy that by now. There is no shortage of good waitstaff in the area. The good quality has gone down hill too. I won't be back, not ever.

One might imagine I live to write poor reviews. Hardly. It's unbearable to work my a** off to earn a living, then spend that cash for poor service, worse food, and lose half an evening of my life. Gurkhas used to be good, really good. Two evenings ago we visited. The dining room was occupied by just 3 other small parties. 10 minutes after being seated, the server finally appears, offers water, and we request Lassis. 10 more minutes, the Lassis materialize, and we order. The Lassis were good, but slightly warm. A warm Lassi is always...weird. More than 30 minutes later, after other diners arriving after us had been served, had finished their meal, and were rising to leave, 2 samosas arrive. Before these, I never met a samosa I didn't like. These were awful, soft (rewarmed?), unevenly seasoned, sharp-tasting, yucky. Next, the buttered naan, after just a couple minutes became cold, and brittle, as if it had been prepared previously, and just warmed up a bit for us. Also the first naan I've ever disliked. The worst dish, by a mile, was the chicken pakora. Indescribably awful. Dry white meat chicken, surrounded by a vile, offensively-sharp, coating. I'm a piggie. I'll find something to like in most foods, and consume it, while others watch and cringe. The food was, that evening, was essentially inedible. Even the daal would embarrass Progresso. The neighborhood is in a temporary slide with the terrible Bogey's, the sliding to oblivion Cafe Blue, and now the seeming demise of the once-great Gurkhas. Thank goodness for the always wonderful Yurihana.

  • Tiffany N.

I wish I knew the names of the things I ate at Gurkhas because I think that would really improve my review. But, I don't and so we'll have to go with descriptions and hopefully some of you out there will understand me. First of all the restaurant itself is casually nice - really clean with lots of table of varying size so that when we entered with a group of 8 there was already a table set that was big enough for us. The staff, too, are a nice group. They were available without being overly obnoxiously attentive, which is sometimes a hard mix to find. I had the buffet which carried quite a few options - plenty for vegetarians and omnivores alike. Some of my favorites were the cauliflower in some sort of sauce, these little potato pancake things that were a bit spicy, a chickpea dish, and the Daal. (Hey! Look at that! I did know the name of one thing.) But, everything I ate was enjoyable. The one strange thing to me was that we got our silverware at the buffet, but they never gave us full sized napkins. So, we all used cocktail napkins that the server provided. I mean, I know they gave us the cocktail napkins, but those don't really cover my lap and I tend to be a messy eater so I need protection for my dresses. And that protection usually means regular sized napkins.

Gurkhas is a wonderful little restaurant on the outskirts of Boulder. It was the restaurant of choice for the Boulder School of massage to host lunch for six Yelpers who attended a tour of the school. We all had the lunch buffet and it was fun to watch fellow Yelpers fill their plates. It made me realize how different we really are when it comes to food choices. Several of us went with the all vegetarian choices which also included delicious fresh green beans in garlic, some of us went halfsies/meat and veg., and some went with an almost all meat selection. And I imagine everyone of us was happy with our choices. My favorites were the green beans, saag, and sweet potato pakora. I had refreshing iced chai and thoroughly enjoyed dipping the papadams in the tamarind and mint sauces with Harmony. Their sauces are top notch. The other pluses for Gurkhas are a clean, nice interior and an attentive staff. I could see them circling around to check our table but we were all eating, happy, and had everything we needed so they did not bother us too much. I can see where Gurkhas is a great addition to the Gunbarrel area.

A dinner here: Coconut Curry Lamb and Chicken Tikka Masala. The service was friendly and quite helpful. The naan was fluffy, warm and delicious. Chicken Tikka was a delicious treat -- spicy, creamy with tender chicken. The lamb left something to be desired. We ordered it "mild" but that was more like "no spice" it was a little bland and the lamb -- as it often is in Indian food -- was not tender but rather chewy. The prices were a little higher than I'd expected as well. Overall, a good experience, I'd go back for the chicken tikka, for sure. Side note: this place is really tucked away but don't overlook it. You might really like it!

We visit often and are never disappointed. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and welcoming, and the prices are quite agreeable. While an obvious and easy choice for the lunch buffet, we also frequent here for tasty date night dinners. Don't forget to try the honey naan!

Finding flavorful and delicious Indian food had been a huge challenge for me when I moved to the Boulder area from Cincinnati 3 years ago (I know, I know: Cincinnati seems an unlikely city for amazing Indian cuisine, but trust me - soooo many fantastic restaurants) -- that is, until we stumbled upon Gurkhas. We tried them all, too! Tandoori Grill, Himalayas, Taj, Dushanbe Tea House, Royal Peacock (now India Clay Oven), Sherpa's, Maharaja... there were probably more! We were constantly left unsatisfied due to the lack of spice and flavor in our dishes. I know I'll return to a restaurant if they have delicious matar paneer and garlic naan. Probably not the best way to judge a restaurant; certainly not the most fair and well-rounded criteria, but there you go. Matar paneer is one of the loves of my life. Thankfully, Gurkhas passed the test. I was hooked from the first bite (still not as delicious as my favorite places in Cincinnati, but close!) I typically order takeout from Gurkhas, which on average takes them about 30 minutes to get to the front counter. I consider myself a regular, placing orders nearly once a week. The staff are quite friendly. They know what I'm going to order as soon as I tell them who is calling and I am always greeted with friendly smiles and polite, interesting conversation. My only complaint is that they have taken matar paneer off their menu! Can you believe that?! I couldn't! Saddest day of my life. Ever! Thank goodness they still let me order it off-menu, but the price was raised a few bucks. :( A bummer for someone who frequents their business. Sigh. Oh well... could be worse, I suppose!

Went here in the afternoon. The buffet was really good. I ate way to much Chicken Tika Marsala. The service was about on par with other Indian places I have been to (meaning not that great) but the food was good and the naan bread was warm.

  • Cynthia B.

We've gotten takeout saag paneer and garlic naan from them a few times before, which has been good but (IMO), $10 for a pound of seasoned spinach is too expensive. Last night the SO ordered Indian Butter Chicken (Makhani). Not on the menu anymore, but they said they'd make it for him. We got the same-sized container (roughly 16 oz) but it was easily half bones. And not actually Makhani, although it was Makhani-ish. But mostly just badly-chopped chicken thighs with LOTS of bone. NOT COOL, Gurkhas.

Pretty great Indian food (the tikka masala is particularly good), and the servers are absolutely the sweetest. I go there pretty frequently and once accidentally ordered the wrong meal, so they remade the one I wanted quickly and at no extra change. Love this place!

So the 5-star rating is based on food only. We were here on a Sunday evening. When we arrived, 3-4 or four tables were finishing up, so we were technically the only active table for a while until other a couple of other patrons showed up. Service was sloooooooooowwww getting our entrees out. When the food did arrive, however, everything was mmmmm, mmmm, delicious. Regular and garlic naan, shrimp curry, malai kofta (the only one I didn't try, though everyone else said it was good), chicken tikka masala, baingan bharta, and saag paneer were all tasteeeeeeee and spiced just right. Samosas were good, too, although it's hard to mess those up. **Apparently they've recently trimmed their menu fairly extensively, according to my boyfriend's bro, who was with us and had dined there a few weeks prior. The waiter said it was easier on the chefs that way.

I was excited to find out that my hum-drum office in Gunbarrel had an Indian lunch buffet within walking distance. The first couple of times I dined there, last year, were pretty good. Nothing I would go out of my way to dine at if I didn't work nearby, but still worth the $10 for the lunch buffet. I like the fact they use sweet potatoes for their pakora and there is some variety to their buffet offerings: Okra, saag paneer, sometimes even chow mein stir-fry. The waitstaff is always friendly and will bring fresh naan bread to your table during lunch. Their chai is also quite tasty and comes with free refills. However, it seems that in the past couple of months the quality has gone downhill. I've never eaten here for dinner so I cannot attest to the quality of food that comes directly from the kitchen but the past 3 or 4 times I have eaten lunch, I've left not feeling very well. I am by habit not an overeater and have left feeling full beyond belief after one modest plate of food that contains mostly vegetables and a little of their curry and tandoori chicken, and maybe one small scoop of jasmine rice. I think the flavors are quite good although could be more spicy and robust, but it seems that something has changed in the content of the food. I have given the place a break for a few months but will probably go back within the next couple of weeks and give it another try. I do like this restaurant, it's not the best but for a small quiet place tucked away in Gunbarrel it is quite pleasant and a nice change from fast food so I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

If you're like me, you will read this review, and then will read others to try to talk yourself into going here perhaps because its convenient or cheap. However, I have been eating here since it opened, and it used to be decent, but recently it just gets worse and worse. I can't even believe I ended up there again today after the terrible meal I had there last time (must be early onset Alzheimers). I arrived at 2pm for the lunch buffet (they close at 2:30). As I walked in the cashier looked at his watch and was inconvenienced by having me come in (I realized that I was the only one). That should have been a sign for me to leave. The buffet was less than mediocre - cold, old and tasteless (perhaps you just need to come earlier). I tried to order off the menu (no luck). The service was no better. Personally I think there are much better Indian restaurants a short drive north or south. I paid for my food - at lunch, and afterward....blech.

My daughter and I are Gurkhas regulars, we come for the buffet about once per month. We love it because they have tons of vegetarian options and it's only $10/person for all you can eat. Favorites include the samosas, honestly the best I've had anywhere, crispy on the outside, hot and soft potatoes inside, perfectly spiced and delicious. Of course the saag paneer is delicious especially wrapped in the warm butter naan. The veggie pakora is super yum. The rice pudding chilled and perfectly sweet. And the list goes on and on. I think one of their secrets that sets them apart from other Indian restaurants is the ample use of anise seed in many of their dishes. Yummers. We always leave stuffed to the gills, it's the only meal we eat all day.

This is my favorite Indian place in Boulder and even beats Kathmandu on a few items. It is tucked back in the corner of the office park so I hope more people find out about this place. It does steady lunch business but always seems empty at dinner. My wife and I get it to go a lot for dinner and it is perfect everytime. The chicken saag was one of the best things I have ever had. They also have the best chicken tikka masala HANDS DOWN.

Gurkhas now tops my list of places to get Indian food...! Consistently delicious and their version of 'hot' is definitely hot. Hottest red curry I've had in Boulder but still manages to taste amazing through the heat. Sag Paneer and Shrimp Masala are my current faves! Too good- everything is served in traditional copper ware (I think copper?) Servers are super friendly and accommodating. Don't be deceived by the lack of crowd-!! People don't know what they're missing.

This cute little restaurant in Boulder is tucked in the far back corner of the Gunbarrel shopping center. We were treated to this place by the Boulder College of Massage Therapy who were our gracious hosts. It seems like the lunch buffet might be to way to go for the first time visitors. I always am a sucker for a good Indian Smorgasboard, and this was no exception. The chicken curry had a good sauce and I really liked the little honey doughballs.

I've already raved about Tibet's, and my feeling hold true there. However, Gurkha's pulls in a good solid second. They have a lot of the same foods I love (the saag, the naan, the chicken masala, the kir, the chai) and for the lunch buffet, a few things I'd never had before and couldn't name (some type of little ball that tasted like a maple-syrup infused pancake, yumm!!) The service was...I'll be nice and say 'relaxed' since we did only get the buffet and for lunch you apparently pay up front. I wish restaurants that do that would tell you instead of dropping off the check and never coming back while you sit there with your debit card whipped out. It was pretty slow while I was there, but then this place isn't located by very many churches and it was early Sunday afternoon. It made it easier to have a soft-spoken conversation, though. All in all, it was very pleasant, but not exciting.

I did not have the chance to read the reviews on this restaurant before dining there. Now that I have, I would say that if you took all of them and mixed them together, you would get an extremely fair portrayal of Gurkhas. I ate there for dinner and this was my experience: Walking in, the restaurant is very simple in its decor. I had heard their lunch buffet was really popular; however, by being the only group there I thought that maybe we had made a mistake. Sitting down, I looked around and didn't see anyone else working except the one gentleman who sat us. He was very kind and polite. He quickly came over and turned over what I can only imagine is a traditional Indian copper vessel and poured us water and took drink orders. I noticed that he was the host, the waiter, and was taking quite a few take out orders, which I came to realize is how they do most of their dinner business. After learning it was my grandfathers anniversary with my late grandmother, he comp't the chai for both he and my mother. He also brought us a complimentary appetizer on top of the two that we had ordered, the Vegetable Pakora and the Onion Kulcha Naan (both of which were great). Our waters were kept full as well as the chai, without us needing to ask once. Our food was soon to arrive, by another gentleman, and it was fabulous! We ordered the Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Zalfrezi and Chicken Tika Saag. When I asked for the Tika Saag to be spicy, he warned me that if I hadn't eaten there before and wasn't accustomed to their version of spicy I better stick with medium or maybe try medium-spicy because most people cry with spicy... my kind of restaurant! It ended up being spicy enough for my mom to not be able to eat it and I could definitely taste the spice; however, next time I may increase the heat (I like really spicy food). Before we left two other groups had arrived for dinner as well, leaving it not such a baron restaurant after all. Now...I did read one review that talked about the restaurant being gross and mainly the women's bathroom being unclean. As far as using the facilities goes, there was plenty of soap, paper towels and the toilets themselves were very clean. I will agree that the floors, etc. lacked a certain cleanliness that would have been what most consider to be standard; however, it was not anywhere near enough to scare me away from the restaurant. Basically...if you know something like that would bother you, I would skip using the restroom. ;)

Took a number of friends here for diner and had very pleasant experience, lovely chai, food above average in flavor and quality.

I've only had the lunch buffet here and I have to say I enjoyed it. The tandoori chicken was very tasty (lately I've had some that were quite bland, believe it or not and I had a hard time believing it even though I was eating it!). The sag paneer was very good as were the mixed veggies. That's what I ate so that's all i can comment on. I also had the shredded carrots with nuts dessert and I thought it was delicious. A great way to end the meal. The service was quick and attentive. My water was filled several times, my dishes picked up quickly and my bill came to me when I asked for it. The place was actually quite busy, and there were a couple of waiters working the shift yet I had great service. No complaints there. I would go back again.

Best Indian in and around Boulder. Food can be on the hot side, but also on the full of taste side. If you need food less hot just ask, wait staff very helpful.

Really like the food here. Best chicken tiki masala that I have had here in Co. If you ask for "hot" spice, it will be hot. (a good thing). Most other dishes we have tried have all been good. The service is friendly. We mostly order takeout. My only gripe is that they don't open until 5, and if you call then, it can take some time for your food to be ready. So unfortunately not really an early dinner option for us by the time we get there and back. Very good place.

Such good food. I hope this sticks around! It seems restaurants in this location tend to fail. Keep supporting Gurkhas!! Gunbarrel needs good places like this! While the first time we visited for dinner we had slow service, service has been prompt since then. Flavorful chicken momo, fresh saag (the chicken tikka saag is really good with nice fresh ginger as a garnish), and a very good buffet with choices not seen at the other Indian places in town. I'm dinging them a star as sometimes the naan is slightly dry and their chai isn't the best in town (though good). I hope they do well and get to the point where business allows them to make some improvements to the location. If you go and are unfamiliar with the "Gunbarrel Cultural Center", Gurkhas is located back in a corner in the strip mall just to the south of King Soopers. It is next door to the Gunbarrel Athletic Club, on the same side of the strip mall as Page Two. We look forward to their expanded menu.

My husband and I recently moved to the Gunbarrel area and have eaten here twice so far. I was hesitant because of some of the reviews, but since it is next to the gym we decided to give it a try. Our first time we ate in the restaurant and I'd give it 4.5 stars for our experience. The food was very good and we were both very happy. Service was a bit slow considering how few people were there, but it was fine as we were not in a hurry. The second time around, we got our food to go. We both got the tika saag with chicken since it was so amazingly good the first time we came in. Our food was ready on time and that was fine. But, the food didn't taste quite as good as it had before and my chicken was a little dry. It was still good, just not what we were expecting based on our first experience. We will go again, though, I'm sure.

We order take out from Gurkhas a lot and their garlic naan and Korma anything are pretty awesome. Great to have this little indian/nepalese gem in Gunbarrel.

Used to go for a decent lunch buffet, but had dinner there recently and it had clearly changed hands. Worst Indian meal of my life.

Nice casual place to check out when you want a simple but good Indian lunch buffet. Located in a shopping center near Gunbarrel, Gurkhas offers a spacious and well it ambience during your meal. The food was great and a lot of the dishes were vegan except for the chicken dishes. They had the common ones, Lentil Dal, Curry vegetables, Samosas, and Penkora (probably misspelled) were all delicious. They also had rice and lo mein type noodles. Unfortunately the dessert, salad, and condiment section were not labelled at all- not sure why. They had a carrot dessert, Khir, and Gulab Jamen. They also had different chutneys, and some basic salad. Staff was good about taking our plates and re-filling water. They also bring each table a bowl full of naan. Like I said, simple but serves all the basic Indian food craving needs, and I would go back again.

We have their lunch buffet every once in a while, but we usually do takeout on Friday nights. I'm so happy that this is our neighborhood Indian joint. My go to's are the chicken tikka saag & the honey naan. Everything is super tasty!

Bad service, we are one of 3 tables in the restaurant and it took 20 minutes to bring drinks and water. Its been 45 minutes since we have ordered and the food still has not arrived. The staff are rather rude and act like they don't want us to be there
