I love Tres Margaritas! I had a rough start with it when I tried to order something out of my comfort zone, but I quickly got back on track. I love the drink menu! Good beer, great margaritas, and there are plenty of yummy blended umbrella drinks too. The tortilla soup is a great light option for an app, and the fundido/queso is a must. Chile relleno is Delish... Get it crispy! I order cheese/onion enchiladas with flour tortillas, rice and beans. Everything is excellent! So much cheese! Great, friendly staff. Clean. My fav for Mexican in boulder.

Caveat: I only stopped in here for drinks a couple months ago while traffic died down. We hit the bar, no Tito's vodka (STRIKE ONE haha) and my beer was painfully slow in coming. So was the second one. I spilled some stuff, looked around and the bartender was MIA. Had to pretend to be an employee and clean it up myself. He showed up a bit later and sort of wandered around and I got bored waiting for the offer of another drink and we left. Not crazy anxious to try the food if the bar service is so absent.

Pros: -Food tasted alright -Very friendly staff Cons: -Kind of a "slop house" when it comes to Mexican. A lot of the food items looked the same. -The frozen margarita was just a little bit of margarita with a lot of shaved ice on top -Somewhat expensive for what you get -Chips and salsa weren't great

If you want food poisoning, I highly recommend this place! The food poisoning was extremely violent here and kept me vomiting all night. That was such a great lifetime experience I will never go back, I am good for life. Thanks 3 margaritas for showing me how truly great Food poisoning really is and slapping us with a $50 bill. I gave 2 stars because our waiter was great. As far as the food and drinks, stay away unless you want to enjoy a great night of violent vomiting from the delicious food poisoning they just gave you.

Not bad considering we were just passing through. Service was efficient, though not particularly friendly. The dinner plates were pricey so we opted for the combos/specials, which ended up being a good deal (can easily be split into to or three meals). I'd be curious to try the lunch specials, which I'll probably do at a location much closer to where I actually live.

Went to dinner here on a Friday night for the first time. I won't return because the food was ok- not great. I ordered two different margaritas and seriously questioned whether there was any alcohol in them at all. I didn't even get buzzed and they tasted mostly of sour mix and juice, and at $6 to $9 each, I expect to feel it. Don't recommend this place.

Alright, the decorations and colors are ridiculous, it looks like a clown vomited inside the place. It's a rainbow explosion. But I enjoyed the bar in the back and the variety of food. There were menu items that are not the typical American-Mexican fare.

Delish! I've lived down the street from this place for years but never have tried it because it looks very "chainish" and I'm not big into chains. But I've also struggled for a long time to find good Mexican here in Boulder. So during last nights snow storm we didn't want to drive far and we were craving Mexican - so we hesitantly decided to just try it. It was great and we will absolutely come back! The ground beef on the taco was incredible and the tamales were awesome. I didn't love the refried beans, but everything else was very very tasty. We had the Original Margaritas which were great too. So happy to have found this place! Not too expensive either!

Fantastic place to take your family! Great chicken dishes. Great kids menu. Coin Margaritas are the best in Boulder. Efficient, friendly staff. You won't be disappointed!

You either have good tamales or bad, the ones served today are bad. Overcooked, dry and tasteless filling. The environment is nice enough and the staff are pleasant. I came for lunch though. I won't be back.

  • Steve B.

Took the kids. Three of us. Burrito, shrimp entree, enchiladas and two margs, $75. Food is mediocre at best. Margs taste like a store-bought mix. Plenty of better alternatives at this price. Head down the road to Agave.

I went today 11/2/14, and was amazed that the food had declined so much since the last time that I went, which was maybe a year ago. I ordered fish, and the person that I was with ordered shrimp. Both of us found the plates very distasteful, maybe because the fish was old? Sure was concerned about what might happen if I ate the plate. My tilapia was very fishy, which is not normal for tilapia. Not sure what the issue really was, but we both sent it back. The salsa was also sub par, we should have gone to a different place. Service was unremarkable and it took us awhile to get the check. It was as if no one was concerned at all that we sent both meals back, we sure won't be back for some time to come.

Unfriendly and slow service! The food is not too terrible (there's better Mexican in Boulder) but we will not go to this place because the service is so awful.

Chips were fresh tasting and crispy. table of two ate during late lunch and food was fast and hot. tasted good and was a good value. we both commented how we would return. friendly and polite staff serving us.

I went to 3 Margaritas as part of a group gathering. I had only been there one other time shortly after they opened so was open to the experience. The the service was good, the waitress was friendly, and the food came fast - as did the chips and salsa. All I ordered was a tostada with ground beef and a diet coke. My stomach was churning before I got out of the parking lot. I suffered through stomach pain and intestinal cramping for about two hours after eating there. I definitely will not be going back!

It may be because I can walk here from home, have a ridiculously huge margarita, then stumble home, that I like this place so much. However, I think the fact that the margaritas are good and the food fills my Mexican food cravings are more the reason I keep returning. OK, maybe it's all three. To sum it up - good food and good margaritas! I've tried the beef enchiladas, chile relleno (crispy version), pork chile verde and crab enchiladas (a bit salty) and all have been good. I also really enjoy the over-the-top furniture and colors, it just feel festive! I would love to sit outside, if only they'd add some potted trees on the patio or some umbrellas to the tables out there. The patio has a lot of potential, it's just not there yet. If you're looking for good Mexican standards, Tres Margaritas doesn't disappoint.

I really wanted to like this place but the food was completely forgettable. Ordered the Carne Asada and it was way too thin and flavorless. Sister ordered enchiladas and she couldn't even eat them (they took it off her bill). I guess we'll have to continue to drive to Efrains in Lafayette or Casa Alegre in Louisville to get our Mexi food fix. Why doesn't Boulder have a GOOD Mexi restaurant!?

Horrible. Horrible. HORRIBLE. Our waitress had herpes of the mouth and was soooo rude that we almost didn't even order. The guy that brought us chips and salsa wouldn't acknowledge our existence. We waited 15 minutes for water and never got a refill. We had to go and get the host to ask for our infected waitress so we could order. When she did grace us with her presence she rolled her eyes and go our order wrong. When I asked the manager if we could please get SOMEONE to at least give us more water, he said to sit down and wait. I love Mexican food. I'm not a high maintenance jerk. But this was one of the worst experiences I've ever had.

This place just opened, and was about was good as I thought, which is not. The food is pretty expensive for what you get, which I had the chicken burrito. I also had a marg, which had barely any alcohol. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Tres Margaritas is a decent chain restaurant. They have re-decorated this location that was previously Sol Azteca very nicely. The employees are friendly, and service is fast and efficient. Chips & salsa is brought to the table upon arrival. Chile rellenos were pretty good. I didn't care for the sauce, but other people might. Prices are comparatively on the high side, I thought. Portions were quite generous though. Rice was good. Seems like a good place for families to gather and eat. Nice private room in the back for events.

I moved to Boulder from SF 2 months ago and one of the things I miss most about CA is the mexican food. 3 Margaritas is a restaurant/bar and pales in comparison to the legit taco trucks & taquerias in San Francisco, but it's still pretty darn good. My Fiancee and I love coming here because they are open late, always have available seating and make great margaritas. We are always given exceptional and prompt service - and they never give us any lip if we ask to change the channel on one of the bar TV's. The portions are HUGE and very flavorful. Their chile verde is delicious and has just the right amount of spice. We have tried a majority of the menu and have lots of go-to dishes. We love the chicken mole and Chile Rellano (crispy!). The tilapia salad is also a winner. Pricing is a bit on the higher side, as everyone has mentioned, but if the food and service is good then i guess you get what you pay for, right? The decor is crazy colorful and the best is on Saturdays when a band comes in and families dance right there in the restaurant. Given the fact that a lot of the mexican food in CO is really more SW than Mexico, it's nice to come across a place like this. You should check it out.

3 Margaritas is a loud, busy restaurant that serves its purpose well. The service is fast, the margaritas are great, and the menu is gigantic! The food is good, and I've never had anything but polite service, and it's kid friendly!

Decent food, and good salsa. Helps that it is right around the corner from me too. Place never seems overly busy either so you can get right in/out.

This 3 Margaritas is fairly new to Boulder. I went for dinner with a few friends on a Tuesday night. There were a lot of people at the restaurant but we were seated right away. We also got fresh chips and salsa as soon as we sat down. Food: We took a while to decide what to order from the menu because it was so big. There were way too many options, which made it hard to decide. I ended up ordering the chile relleno. The dish came with the chile relleno, pinto beans, rice, guacamole and lettuce. It also comes with a side of flour or corn tortillas. The food was pretty good, but it wasn't the best chile relleno that I've had. The chile wasn't really spicy and the cheese somewhat overpowered the meal. Overall, the plate was OK, but there was room for improvement. A positive was that the plate was pretty big and I definitely could have had leftovers if I didn't pig out. With my meal I also ordered a glass of horchata. This was the sweetest horchata I've ever had. If sweets aren't your thing, then this horchata will probably be too sweet for you. I really liked it though--lots of sugar and cinnamon. AND they had free refills for the horchata! Service The service was great! Our waiter was very nice and EXTREMELY patient with us. We took forever to order and got distracted easily. Our waiter had to come over to our table a few times to get our orders. When we were leaving the restaurant the manager and our waiter came over and thanked us for coming. 3 Margaritas is one of the better Tex-Mex restaurants in Boulder. You get a generous portion of food, excellent service and a great place to hang out with friends.

I have been waiting for Boulder to get a 3 Margaritas for a long time! The food and service is amazing, best chicken mole I've had that isn't my grandma's. Fresh in-house chips, salsa, and tortillas. Let downs do include weak margaritas and a lack of horchata, but this is true for the chain as a whole, not just this restaurant. Overall: huge and reasonably priced portions, friendly management and waitstaff, and delicious food...maybe skip the drinks.

Fast, cheap, standard. I think Casa Alvarez is better.

Finally! Three Margs open in Boulder. I have been waiting months for this place. Why? Access to quick, cheap, good mexican food in North Boulder. Several restaurants have struggled in this location, including other Mexican places. 3 Margaritas is a perfect fit as they are an established family run business with experience in the Colorado market. As for the review on their vegetarian food options, I give them 3 stars. The number of veggy options is not exceptionally large but competes with other Boulder restaurants. Yes, despite our reputation Boulder struggles with sufficient vegetarian options (not even looking at vegan or raw food) especially in the higher end restaurants and ethnic areas. Back to the point; While the number of options is not amazing the few selections are quite good. The Expresso Vegetarian Burrito is outstanding, and huge! Their refried beans are clean (no lard), however, the green chile does have pork in it (unfortunate, but the enchilada sauce is good). Three stars for food. Bumped to four stars for friendly service and convenience. Glad they are finally open!

Impressive for a chain. My veggie fajita arrived sizzling hot at the table (as it should) full of flavorful mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, onions and all the fixings. There was enough food for two meals so I had leftovers the next day. We also ordered the fried ice cream for dessert, my boyfriend, who loves ice cream, said it was the best he's ever had. It had the perfect accent of cinnamon and was covered in a crispy crust. Unfortunately the house margs were WEAK! I'm not convinced there was any tequila in those things. Our server was very efficient, didn't hover, and was always there when we needed him. Also, they mistakenly overcharged me for the bill (when they closed out I guess they forgot my boyfriend had paid $20 in cash). I noticed it a couple of days later when I looked at my bank account. Went in with my receipt and our server remembered me, apologized for the error and pulled a $20 from his wallet and handed it over. I was pleased with how quickly he handled the problem. We'll definitely be returning!

Out of every Mexican restaurant I have been to in my 33 years alive, this place is last on my list. I can't say the food was horrible, because it wasn't... It didn't taste like of anything to be honest. It was edible. I got the chili verde, and all I could taste was the dry pork(which was half fat) and the tortilla. It might as well have not had any tomatillo/verde sauce on it at all unless the goal was watered down canned sauce from Wal-mart. Also, the menu said it came with Spanish rice, but they must have made a mistake since all I got was orange colored rice that was salted, with a few drops of taco sauce mixed in. My girlfriend's burrito was bunch of stuff she really couldn't taste wrapped in a tortilla. It was HUGE, but thats really not worth much when you can't taste anything. She made 3 meals out of it, and really the only reason she ate it at all was because we don't waste food. I guess what I would compare it to would be like going to Taco Bell and paying $7 for a gordita -- not disgusting, but also not worth the money -- while the Taco Bell is not Mexican, at least it HAS flavor -- so it is actually better. I can't believe people think 3 Margaritas is good. I would be embarrassed to take friends or family there, and I would NEVER recommend it. There is MUCH better mexican in Boulder and the surrounding areas(and that is saying a lot since the other Mexican food is not "great" either.) Me, I wish I would have went to Efrains. The only reason I gave any stars at all is because we ordered "to-go" so we didn't have to listen to the screaming kids running all over, and the food was ready in 6 minutes. I won't be back.

A step above your garden-variety Tex-Mex place...the service is fast and friendly, and the prices are reasonable. I've enjoyed all the dishes I've ordered here.

I really wanted this place to be good, but it wasn't. The inside reminds me of a Mexican Chuck E Cheeze with alcohol. So does the food. I think they used melted velveeta on one of our dishes.

Bright fresh Mexican food. Great location in north Boulder with lots of free parking. Tacos al Carbon had great grilled flavor and excellent sauce. Tasty guacamole and salsa. The crispy chile relleno was really good too. Very good cheese filling. Good iced tea, something of a rarity in Colorado Mexican restaurants. Colorful decor and big enough for groups. Closer to home for us than the other 3 Margs.

I can`t believe all the good reviews it has. I have been in many mexican restaurants all over the US and this is one of the worst I've ever been. We just moved in really close by and decided to give it a try for lunch. We came at 2.30pm and the place was almost empty.. around 4 tables with ppl. Everything fine till now.. we get our chips with a very hot sauce, we asked for one no spicy and the waiter came with it. It took him at least 10-15 min to come to note our order... (we were ready after 3 minutes from sitting down). We ordered 1 plate of fajitas to share.. It took them 50minutes to come with it. Plus we saw the waiter picked up dirty dishes and right away take the tortillas with his hand or handing menus to people and do the same thing without washing their hands... disgusting. Plus, the food was not good at all.. 1 small steak of beef on top of lots of veggies.. normally they put more meet in a fajitas plate. First time we cannot share this plate, Finally, when complaining about the quantity.. he just said.. yeah that's normal.. and left. No apologies, no offering a solution.. etc.... really really bad service. There are other mexican restaurants nearby that are much more worthy than this one. Honestly, if you appreciate mexican food, dont come here. Also, very pricey.

This 3 Margaritas is great! We always get seated right away - even when they are pretty busy. The service is excellent - the staff is all very friendly and the wait staff stays on top of what you need. The food always comes very fast! The portions are large and the food is always great for a chain restaurant.

Could be a 4 with better service and a tiny bit of care in presentation and modernizatin of the menu. But, it's a chain - and compared to the competition in these parts, I'll definitely be back. Had the sopa de albondigas. The cilantro and mint and minced onion and limes on the side made this one. Nice flavor, fresh ingredients, good size, good price. The rest of the fam got the usual suspectsct

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
