Montana's is a great bar and restaurant. The happy hour deals are excellent and the food is always fresh and reasonably priced. The staff is helpful, friendly and knowledgable. Montanas is great for kids and adults. There are lots of night time activities as well. Not sure what the bad reviews are about...maybe people were confusing it with finnegans (the place there before montanas)

They became an ok bbq place when the area already has some better bbq places.... but I still love their margarita

Went here for breakfast a few weeks ago. At 7:30 there were only 2 other tables. The menu is fine and affordable with bottomless cups of coffee. They even had the fireplace going which was nice. There was only 1 server who was also bringing out the food. It was a little on the slow side. Maybe there was only 1 person in the kitchen too. A note on the restrooms- while they had been cleaned from the previous night's partying, they just smelled awesome! Like maybe pipes aren't working properly.

Latin night on Sunday nights--. Food is decent. I don't drink so I can't say much about that. I'm a regular here, is a safe and great place to bring the chicas to party and dance.

This spot reminds you that you are in a mountain town, not just a resort area! That can be taken as good or bed, it's up to the beholder. An eclectic somewhat rough group of characters comprise the staff, but they did a fine job of it. We waited quite a while for food, but it was decent and the GM checked in with us. At one point he ran to the store to get an ingredient we requested that he didn't carry... That is pretty cool! Food: I had the hash. It was truly tasty! I give this place a click above a diner or a chain, but nothing to drive to mountains for! You could soak up the previous evening's fun here though...

The food here tastes great, especially the french toast. We ate breakfast early here and there was only one server, which makes sense since there weren't many people in the restaurant at all. My only complaint is that I wish the food came out more hot as it was just on the warm side when they were served to us.

It's a shame that people in the "valley" are so critical of this place. Mexican food in the middle of a mountain? Of course it's not going to be just across the border good. As far as "locals don't go here?" I call shenanigans. On Friday's (upstairs) they tap a FREE keg at 5 that's there until it's gone. I was there this past Friday night (with a local) and it was PACKED with "locals". Shots were cheap - food was good. Actual homemade chips. Service was good and fun. Maybe the reality is...when this place opened up a year or so ago they didn't quite have their game plan figured out. Mountain town restaurants usually always use the same food services so the food ends up tasting the same everywhere you go. Montanas is obviously trying to be something different.

Frequented Montana's again and was pleased with the meal. Started with a cucarita, a cucumber margarita which was so delicious and refreshing. We were started with the house chips, salsa and slaw. The entrees were fish tacos, grilled shrimp enchiladas, ahi tuna lettuce wrap and Aztec chicken. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The enchiladas were cheesy and yum. However overall the meal wasn't mind blowing. Plus tip the meal was $100 including drinks for all. I will go back for the drink but probably not the food, I've had better Mexican.

The ghost of Finnegan's returns to haunt Montana's? :D Service... spent over an hour at a deck table without seeing a server. Happy hour...taco bar... near empty, a little dirty, no taco shells... Food order from menu... good. Got my own drinks and placed food order at bar - kudo's to bartender for bringing out food and comping a round in recognition of slow service. I'm a local - will try it again - but currently would not recommend to friends or visitors.

I wanted to like this place Avon needs more good Mexican Restaurants, but I was underwhelmed. The first time I stopped in, we had dinner. I had chile rellenos which were 99% eggroll and 0.5% cheese and 0.5% pepper. This could have been saved by a good green chile, but the green chile was bland, no kick to it at all. The chips and salsa has a bland salsa accompanied by a weird coleslaw salsa I once also saw at Tequila's in Glenwood Springs - so I'm not sure if the restaurants are related, but Tequila's is better. Anyhow, the server was weird, kept asking me if I wanted a drink. I can understand why. My boyfriend ordered one Margarita for $9.50 and got a tiny glass. Not impressed. We decided to give the place a second chance and they were having a Friday afternoon happy hour, the place was lively, and filled with lots of patrons. We decided to just stop in for a drink and went up to the bar. The bartender did not even acknowledge us (a, "I'll be right with you" goes a long way). Instead we got to hear him talk to his friends about the prices and merits of every single bottle of liquor Montana's sells. After reading five pages of the Vail Daily, and not even getting any acknowledgment, I offered to go make real decent Mexican food and drinks for my boyfriend at home. We probably saved $60 and had a much better time with much better quality food anyhow.

Bland, probably store bought guacamole. Supposedly home made chips had red and blue ones in them (doubtful they're home made). "Sizzling" fajitas were limp, lifeless and silent on arrival and tortillas are either store bought or made days ago. Fajitas looked like they had a can of stewed tomatoes dumped on it. Salsa and some cabbage creation that came with the chips were bland. That's what I get for not checking online first.

Only had breakfast here. The had 5 breakfast specials for $5.95. I had the French toast which was the best I've had in years. Absolutely delicious! Going back for more before I leave town.

Decent ambiance. Friendly staff. Decidedly bland food. Not sure how you mess up Southwestern, but the meat in the tacos was cold, the chips were stale, and the guacamole was tastless. Like others have said ... I really wanted to like this place. I hope they improve.

We've been here twice for lunch, and I just can't understand why the other reviews are so bad. In my opinion, rating this place a one star is just wrong. It is clean and both the food and service are good. Unlike another local Mexican restaurant in Edwards who leaves their cold chips sitting on the tables all day, Montanas chips are served warm after you are seated (as do most other Mexican restaurants). Sure, the queso is basically just melted Velveeta, but at least they have queso. I'd agree it is overpriced, but where I'm from it is served for FREE along with the chips and salsa anyway so all queso that isn't free is overpriced if you ask me. They have two kinds of salsa: regular and spicy. Even the spicy isn't very spicy, so they need to up their game here. Still, their entrees are good and I think their prices are reasonable for the area. The service has been reasonably good too. Definitely our favorite Mexican restaurant in the Vail valley, but there's still room for improvement!

So this place JUST opened up, and the story is that this whole valley has no good Mexican food... and thus that statement still stands... I had high hopes but yeah that got thrown to the grrrrooouunnnnddd! Oh btw, the ceviche is made with artificial lemon juice. EEWWWW!!!

When it comes to Mexican or Tex Mex food I would go with Taco Bell over this place. Shredded beef taco, no flavor. Fish tacos, buried in a mound of house slaw that tasted like cardboard. Salsa in a word - bland. Price point was way above the quality of food offered. Don't waste your time or money.

We visited this restaurant for the first time last week. It was a Wednesday night and warm so we decided it'd be a good place to go and sit outside. After waiting for the hostess to finish her conversation before even looking at us, we were sat ouside with menus. And then we waited...and waited...and waited. Not even an acknowledgement from a server. A family of four was sat next to us and they lost their patience to wait and left. So after seeing this and that we ourselves had waited for 30 minutes, we left as well. Shame on you, Montana's, for missing out on 4 dinner covers on a slow Wednesday night. Good luck!

I don't like giving one star, but this place needs help in both service and food. The server we had was extremely bubbly and nice, but spent more time chatting with tables the serving. She didn't bring napkins or utensils until our food came, and we had to ask for them. We ordered chips, salsa, and queso for an app. Chips were cold and bland. Salsa was ok but too chunky. Queso was down right gross and tasted very processed. We ordered the shrimp enchiladas with the cream sauce on the side. This dish was good with blue corn tortillas. The menu said gulf shrimp but this shrimp was definitely salad shrimp. A man from kitchen staff brought the food and was much more helpful then our server. Beans and rice were ok. They needed the enchilada sauce drizzled on them to make them better. The rice was almost couscous like. Our teas never got refilled. Service was pretty disappointing. Needless to say we will not be going back here. It's too bad cause their deck is great.

We went here for breakfast, which apparently is fairly new for them. Serve breakfast until noon. Have both Mexican and traditional items. Huevos were great, as well as the breakfast burrito. Nice deck. Excellent food and service. My wife says this is a keeper!

    (4)
  • Maria H.

Service was slow Food was undesirable, stale and tasteless... the tortilla soup was cold and lacked flavor, the arrachera was overcooked and the beans were hard, the appetizer muscles were fishy and literally inedible. Pricing was outrageously overpriced. Needless to say, we won't be back!

  • Micky A.

Horrible place, don't even think about going here. Very confused staff running back and forth aimlessly, took forever to get drinks, then people seated after us getting their food first. 30 minutes after we placed our order, and after getting zero attention for that long, we got up and left. Won't be surprised when this place closes or ends up on a restaurant rescue tv show.

Went for brunch on a Sunday when the Warrior Dash was going and seriously, experienced some of the worst service I have ever encountered. Food was mediocre. Severely understaffed and disorganized! No one even apologized, which made it worse.
